Synthesis of GLORIA side-scan sonar and other geophysical data has provided morpholo- gical and tectonic details of the interaction between the Nazca and South American plates along the Peru Trench (80S-15¦S). Our analyses suggest that a new propagating rift of the Galapagos type is evolving along the Mendana Fracture Zone (MFZ). Subduction induced rift- ing of the Nazca plate is accompanied by organized seafloor spreading for the last 3 Ma at least. GLORIA sonographs and bathymetric mapping show an 8-10¦ divergence in MFZ width towards the Peru Trench. The fracture zone comprises numerous ridges and troughs and a lack of sediment cover in the axial part. Young magnetic lineations (anomalies 1-2A) are observed within the fracture zone wni.cn are orthogonal to the older Nazca plate lineations. The central anomaly narrows west- ward and can be observed up to 400 km seaward of the trench whereas anomaly 2A is terminated about 200 km from the trench axis. Recent SeaMARC II sonar mapping in the region shows large igneous blocks in the Trench axis to the north of MFZ but absent to the south. We believe these blocks represent young seafloor of MFZ rift/spreading center broken off from the ridges as they subduct along the Peru Trench. The MFZ rift is propagating west- ward at a rate of 115 km/Ma (25 km/Ma relative to the South American plate). Given the present rates of accretion at the East Pacific Rise and of propagation along MFZ rift, the Nazca plate will be divided into two parts in about 35 Ma.

Much has been written on milling and cyanidation as practiced on this gold field, therefore the purpose of this paper is to record its development only briefly and to describe in more detail the contemporary state of the science and art of this branch of metallurgy. It is a pleasing task, because a steady evolution is to be recorded. Definite trends influenced the development. Some have the stamp of original thought and observation; many have been achieved from a logical sequence of planned experimentation and research; while others have resulted from the drive of sheer necessity. The large scale of operations and capital outlay has compelled conservative progress. Banket ORe For a better understanding, a review of the characteristics of the ore may not be out of place. The Witwatersrand gold ore is named "banket" from the similarity of the oxidized outcrop ore to the Boer almond cake of that name. The inter bedded orebody is commonly called "reef." It is a conglomerate composed of various sizes of pebbles, principally non-gold-bearing white quartz, which constitute about 70 per cent of the bulk, within a matrix of cementing material consisting of fine-grained quartz, sericite, chlorite and chloritoid and containing the precious metals and mineral sulfides. Argillaceous components in the mil pulp may be as high as 32 per cent. Of the sulfide minerals, pyrite and pyrrhotite are predominant. Most base-metal sulfides are present, but sporadically and generally only found in highly concentrated mill products. In the latter, osmiridium is recovered in varying amounts; from 1 oz. in 3000 tons to 1 oz. in 10,000 tons of ore. Most of the oxidized ore has been mined, so milling is confined principally to the sulfide ore. A typical analysis of sulfide ore is: silica (SiO2), 86.76 per cent; pyritc (FeS2), 2.75; ferric oxide (Fe2o3), 2.65; alumina (Al2o3), 6.91; lime (CaO), tr.; magnesia (MgO), 0.70; sp. gr., 2.7. Milling grade at present price of gold (137 shillings per ounce) varies from 3.5 to 8.5 dwt., with one mine milling ore as high as 16 dwt. The

In the last decade, great strides have been made in the raise boring technique in China. Extensively, the drilling and blasting method has been replaced by the mechanized raising method since 1980. There are now over 3C raise drills operating in more than 20 mines. The diameters for shaft boring varies from 500mm to 2000mm, and to depths up to 90m. Tlis paper mainly describes the performance, mtLin technical achievments and applications of all four kinds of raise drills, and auxiliary equipment. Finally, some recommend- ations for future improvement in the raise boring technique are presented also.

A large room-temperature mechanical-hysteresis effect under cyclic tensile loading was observed in zivconium specimens prestrained at 77°K so as to form large numbers of (1121) twins. The observed hysteresis loss was a maximum when the prestrain was just under 1 pct It also depended strongly on the maximum applied cyclic stress, but only moderately on loading rate and temperature (-72°to 100°C). The phenotnena have also been studied in terms of the elastic aftereffect where the data has been found to cotlforln closely to the functional relationship between strain and time, c = -RT/a In tank ft. t to)/Zr, for strains cts large as about 10-4 This eyication can be derived directly from the strain-rate equation There may be important commercial implications to the present discovery since it appears that within rather wide limits it may be possible to obtain any desired magnitude of damping capacity in zirconium melal. The damping propevties may also be given directional characteristics. It is shown that the observed anelaslic phenomena can he explained on the assumiplion that they are the resuilt of stress-induced twin-boundary movements in which the average twin increases its thickness by only a few percent. In polycrystalline zirconium, a grain is least favorably oriented for slip when its basal plane, containing the (1130) slip directions, lies nearly perpendicular to the principle normal stress. Mechanical twinning is favored by this orientation and under simple tensile deformation at room temperature the primary twinning mode is {1012).' The (1012) twinning shear is small (0.17) so that, during deformation, twin growth does not greatly enhance ductility. At 77°K, on the other hand, the predominant twinning mode shifts to {1121), and many thin (1121) twins can form at small strains.' Twins thus nucleated can grow readily during subsequent room-temperature deformation and permit easy deformation in unfavorably oriented grains. In addition, the (1131) twinning shear is large: 0.63. These facts have lead to a process' for greatly improving the room-temperature ductility of zirconium when it contains a sizable fraction of grains with basal planes nearly normal to the stress axis. Optimum results are obtained by slightly less than 1 pct prestrain. The effect is large so that a 50 pct elongation increase is readily attained. A large room-temperature mechanical-hysteresis effect has also been observed in zirconium specimens prestrained at 77°K. The present paper is concerned with some aspects of this effect which the experimental observations strongly indicate is primarily the result of strain-induced {1121) twin-boundary movements. This clearly suggests that mechanical twins formed by plastic deformation can cause anelastic effects similar to those previously observed2 for annealing twins and twins associated with phase transformations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All specimens were prepared from arc-melted sponge zirconium plate stock as previously described,3 which has a preferred orientation with basal planes aligned parallel to and uniformly distributed around the rolling direction. Both lonti-tudinal and transverse tensile specimens, with axes parallel and transverse, respectively, to the plate rolling direction, were cut from this plate. In a longitudinal specimen most grains are favorably oriented for slip, while in a transverse specimen a large fraction are unfavorably oriented. Prestraining at 77°K was performed in two ways. In one, annealed zirconium plate stock was cooled in liquid nitrogen and then rolled in the transverse plate direction to strains varying from 0.5 to 12 pct. Cylindrical 1/8-in.-diameter by 1-1/4-in.-gage-length tensile specimens were machined from this material. In the other, previously machined tensile specimens were prestrained in tension at 77°K between 0.2 and 3.8 pct. Type FA 25-12 SR4 strain gages were cemented to all specimen gage sections. All tests were performed on an Instron testing machine of 10,000-lb capacity. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows a typical two-cycle room-temperature stress-strain diagram for a specimen prestrained 0.65 pct by rolling at 77°K. The maximum stress in both cycles was 14,500 psi. Note that in the first cycle the loading and unloading curves are unsymmetrical so that a residual strain, er, remains after unloading. The electrochemical behavior of Pittsburgh and Illinois coal pyrite in basic and neutral borate/sulfate solutions was investigated. In the transpassive region, aggressive oxidation of pyrite occurred. The reaction products in this region were Fe(III) oxide, sulfate ion and partially oxidized sulfur intermediates. The formation of sulfur and polysulfides was identified by in-situ Raman spectroscopy. The growth kinetics of the reaction product film, resulting from transpassive oxidation of coal pyrites, were studied using chronoamperometry measurement with both stationary and rotating disk electrodes. The reaction rate was well correlated by a paralinear rate equation. The effects of electrode rotation speed, solution pH and temperature were examined. The kinetics were compared to those for mineral pyrite.

D. C. Ralston—The fact that none of the organizations that have worked on these ammoniacal leaching processes have contributed discussion of Mr. Caron's papers today is a matter of some disappointment. Adaptations, modifications and improvements have been made by several organizations or individuals and to complete the record I want to document a number of them. The Nicaro Nickel Co. operated a Government owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente, Cuba, during the past war. A report on the project was written for Reconstruction Finance Corp. and is in the document file collected by the Office of Technical Services, Commerce Department and filed with the Library of Congress, where it can be consulted or bibliofilm or photostat copies obtained by asking for copies of PB 97271. Nicaro Nickel Co. has obtained a series of U.S. Patents, my list (probably incomplete) of which bears the following numbers: 2,400,098; 2,400,114; 2,400,115; 2,400,461; 2,400,612; 2,458,902 and 2,473,795. International Nickel Co. has also studied the problem and U.S. Patent 2,478,942 shows that some of the complications involving occasional low extractions have been unraveled. Forward, Samis, and Kudryk, of the University of British Columbia, have also published a study of copper-nickel sulphide concentrate.' Others are interested and it is evident that this type of hydrometallurgy is likely to find a happy application in the not-too-far distant future. Caron's two papers practically amount to a summation of his life's work on the important subject of nickeliferous iron ores and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is fortunate to have been chosen the medium of publication. M. Rey—The ammonia leaching process has been the subject of certain studies in New Caledonia, but at the present time, the conditions are not very favorable to its adoption. The process is a combination of a thermal and a hydrometallurgical process. As a result, the first costs and the operative costs are rather high. To counteract this unfavorable situation, it would be necessary to make a very high extraction. But unfortunately, the process is delicate and in spite of all of Caron's valuable work, there are still many unknown factors. It is difficult to obtain regularly a high extraction, exceeding 75 to 80 pct. It would be interesting to have the opinion of Inter-national Nickel on the process and to know what the Dutch are doing in Celebes. M. H. Caron (author's reply)—I am quite familiar with the different types of nickel and cobalt ores as found on New Caledonia, and it may be pointed out that the Celebes ores are quite the same in their properties. Their behavior when treating the ores by the ammonia-leaching process is also alike and in my opinion, there is no reason why a high extraction of the New Caledonian ores could not be obtained if the process is properly applied. For the sake of completeness I may add that one of my patents has not been discussed in the papers. This patent deals particularly with the treatment of serpentine nickel ores. The behavior of fluids in the voids of a rock is fundamental to the study of many of the problems of oil-field development and production. For it is by virtue of these openings between grains that oil and gas are able to move through the rock, to be contained by the rock, and to pass from the rock into the well. The capacity to contain fluids is measured by the porosity of the rock, and the ease of fluid movement is governed by the permeability. When the engineer wishes to estimate the amounts of oil and gas in an underground reservoir he is often concerned with the porosities of the rocks and, when dealing with problems relating to rate of production, he is more likely to be interested in the permeabilities of the rocks. Rocks are permeable because they are porous, but they may be porous without being permeable. Clays are very porous, and yet they are impermeable from a practical standpoint. Attempts have been made1 to correlate permeability with porosity for certain rock members but, where a definite relationship between these two properties is found to hold, it is purely fortuitous and local. Porosity and permeability do not necessarily bear any quantitative relationship to one another. The porosity of a substance is the percentage of void volume to bulk volume. The petroleum engineer is usually interested only in the inter-granular voids that are accessible to fluids. In measuring porosity he does not wish to include scaled openings. The measurement he desires is one of "available porosity," otherwise called "apparent porosity." The porosity of a natural aggregate of solid grains, such as a sandstone or clay, is governed by: (1) Grain-size distribution, (2) angularity of grain, (3) colloidal content, (4) degree of compaction. It is not difficult, for unconsolidated rocks, to measure the effect of any one of these when it alone is varied, and then to predict what the effects on porosity will be for such single variables. This paper illustrates that sampling problems and difficulties are as common in an R&D environment as they are in an operating plant. Researchers need to be aware of the potential influence of poor sampling practices and when feasible determine the sampling and analytical precision at the start of any experimentation. Specific problems that have been encountered are discussed and the procedures implemented to overcome these difficulties are described. Examples from projects include the cyanidation of a Au/Ag ore, column leaching of refractory gold and oxide ores, the bioremediation of contaminated sites and the flotation of ore containing native copper.

Por ello, el cambio del transporte con rieles a sin rieles progresaba rápidamente, ya que de esta forma iniciaba una nueva fase de automatización mecánica. Sin embargo, los ingresos de muchas minas pequeñas suecas disminuyeron durante la década del 60 debido a la caída de los precios del mineral y al aumento del costo de la mano de obra. En consecuencia, el presente texto describe el uso de la minería sin rieles desde 1971. Esto condujo a un rápido aumento de producción que compensaba el bajo precio del mineral. De esta manera, la operación sin rieles permitió la supervivencia de minas menores que enfrentaban, durante los últimos años, los decrecientes precios de minerales hierro-fosfóricos en Europa.

Recent, detailed mapping, (Allibone, 1986; Peden, in prep.) of north west Stewart Island, has shown that the Rakeahua Granite (Watters et al, 1968), is comprised of a wide range of granitoid bodies ranging from diorite to leucogranite. As a result of the wide variation in granitoids Allibone (1986), suggests renaming of the Rakeahua Granite to the Rakeahua Granitoid Complex. Names were also proposed for the individual granitoid bodies mapped.

The mechanism of the flow of tailings slurry is examined, and a mathematical model is derived to describe the flow. Predictions based on the model are then compared with the flow that actually occurred near the shaft at Bafokeng after the No. I tailings dam had failed. The predictions are found to be of acceptable accuracy.

The Mining Law of New Pork, contained in Title XI., Chapter IX., Part One of the Revised Statutes, is as follows: Section 1. The following mines are, and shall be, the property of the people of this State in their right of sovereignty : (1.) All mines of gold and silver discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, within this State. (2.) All mines of other metals discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon any lands owned by persons not being citizens of any of the United States. (3.) All mines of other metals discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon lands owned by a citizen of any of the United States, the ore of which, upon an average, shall contain less than two equal third parts in value of copper, tin, iron, and lead, or any of those metals. Sec. 2. All mines and all minerals and fossils discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon any lands belonging to the people of this State, are, and shall be, the property of the people, subject to the provisions hereinafter made to encourage the discovery thereof. Sec. 3. All mines of whatever description, other than mines of gold and silver, discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon any lands owned by a citizen of any of the United States, the ore of which, upon an average, shall contain two equal third parts or more, in value, of copper, tin, iron, and lead, or any of those metals, shall belong to the owner of such land. This paper summarizes the ecological imbalance status of abandoned rare-earth element (REE) mines in southern China. These include large areas of vegetation damage, serious water and soil erosion, landslides, mudslides, heavy metal pollution, water pollution, soil contamination, and fluorine pollution. The causes which lead to the ecological imbalances at abandoned rare-earth mines are analyzed, such as: the inadequacies of using vat leaching, heap leaching, and in-situ leaching processes to extract REE resources; low mineral thickness and low grade of REE ore; and low utilization rates of the resource. Southern ionic REE resources are not fully integrated, with limited access and ineffective supervision of REE mining by relevant departments. The ecological recovery research for ionic-type REE mines is lagging behind, and there is no deployable ecological restoration method for REE wasteland. In the end, the following suggestions are made to improve the ecological imbalance status of rare-earth mine in southern China: develop new rare-earth extraction processes, accelerate the integration pace of REE resources, increase investment in ecological restoration research in rare-earth wasteland, and so on.

After a very brief historical survey and overall assessment of traffic requirements, the invitation by the British and French Governments for private groups to make proposals for a "fixed link" is described, and the resulting plethora of proposals is reviewed. Answers to the questions "which rocks contain diamonds?" and "which indicator minerals should diamond explorers look for?" are no longer so easily obtained, now that diamonds are known to occur in lamproites and various types of lamprophyres, as well as their traditional source of kimberlites. One way of isolating those factors (host-rock"geochemistry, geographical or tectonic location, xenolith minerals, etc.) which are most critical in determining the diamond potential of a given pipe, is a detailed and critical re-examination of the huge volumes of accumulated data on kimberlites, lamproites and related rocks. A large analytical database to this end has been set up on an Apple Macintosh II microcomputer using the quasi-relational database management system 4th Dimension. Currently, it contains data for up to 90 major and trace elements, isotopic ratios and contained mineral compositions for some 4,000 rock specimens from all over the world. Many experiences in setting up this database are probably relevant to other geologists setting up their own systems: they include determining the relationships between data items; the advantages of codes over free text in representing categorical variables such as rock types; the need for rigorous error trapping and data validation; and the problem of missing data values and ambiguities thereof. The working system is now being used in a rigorous statistical assessment of the criteria which distinguish diamondiferous from non-diamondiferous rocks.

"The Williams Mine processes, on average, 6,450 t/d of gold bearing ore using two parallel grinding circuits, leaching and C.1.P., carbon stripping, electrowinning and refining. At present, each grinding circuit consists of a SAG mill in closed circuit with a spiral classifier and a ball mill in closed circuit with two stages of cyclones.Since grinding has always constituted the largest portion of milling costs, the Williams Mine has been proactive in trying to reduce such costs through innovative changes. One project under consideration is the replacement of one spiral classifier by a vibrating screen.This paper discusses the testwork performed to evaluate the replacement of one spiral classifier by a vibrating screen, and the preliminary engineering performed to date.IntroductionThe Williams Mine, located in northwestern Ontario, approximately 40 kilometres east of Marathon, is part of the Hernia gold camp. The mine is operated by the Williams Operating Corporation and is owned by the Teck Corporation and Homestake Canada Incorporated. Operation of the mine started in October 1985 at a rate of 3,000 t/d. After a mill expansion in August 1988, throughput increased to 6,000 t/d. Production has increased steadily since the mill expansion and in 1995, an average of 6,450 t/d of ore was processed at a recovery of 95.1 %."

Two career employees of the US Dept, of the Interior, in a recent study, indicated that by the end of 1974, 73% of all public lands had been entirely or partially closed to exploration and development of essential resources for leasable minerals and 67% had been similarly restricted for locatable minerals.1 This has come about because of the lack of coordination within the executive branch and between the executive and legislative branches of the federal government and without regard for the cumulative, depressing effect on future domestic mineral production. Much of the withdrawn land is felt to have great potential for discovery of significant mineral deposits.

Thin, heavily doped n-type layers of GaSb have been grown on p-type GaSb substrates. Techniques have been developed for the growth of the n-type layers from a tellurium-doped gallium-rich solution. The solution used consists of 95 at. pct Ga and 5 at. pct Sb. The process consists of immersing the p-type wafer in the solution at a temperature slightly above the liquidus temperature, holding briefly to permit dissolution of the substrate surface, then decreasing the temperature to a value slightly below the liquidus to obtain 1 HE resistivity of n-type GaSb varies linearly with applied hydrostatic pressure, while the resistivity of p-type GaSb is insensitive to such pressure.1,2 The growth. Growth from a solution of GaSb in tin will also be described. In either case the substrate is clamped to a shelf at one end of a graphite boat, and immersion of the wafer and subsequent decanting of the solution is accomplished simply by tilting the furnace. The process is useful for the formation of p-n junctions in III-V compounds and has the advantage that the problems normally associated with diffusion of Group VI elements are not present. Layers up to 4.0 mils in thickness have been grown by the process. material therefore should be useful in a hydrostatic pressure-sensing device. A practical hydrostatic pressure sensor, however, requires the fabrication of GaSb sensing elements of several hundred ohms resistance. Attempts were made to prepare such elements by diffusion, taking advantage of the high sheet resistance of the thin diffused layers and depending upon the p-n junction to provide isolation from the base layer.
