The growth of domestic requirements for motor fuel has been phenomenal, rising year after year in a fashion almost unique among commodities, resisting depressions and forging rapidly ahead in times of prosperity. Consumption advanced from 226 millions of barrels in 1925 to 522 millions of barrels in 1938; or 130 per cent. The economic influences generating and sustaining this demand are of vital concern to the petroleum industry. The general factors affecting utilization of motor fuel are well known but it is the purpose of this paper to employ the recently developed technique of economic dynamics to describe them mathematically. Such problems in economic analysis are complicated by the freedom of all the variables to fluctuate, their mutual interdependence, changing incidence upon one another, and the nonquantitative character of some of them. Economic quantities and relationships, unlike those of the physical world, are continuously changing and this dynamic characteristic is both a distinguishing and confusing feature in economic research. The complexities of the problems require application of the analytical devices of mathematical statistics to uncover the probable relationships between factors. The procedure employed is to formulate a logical relationship linking the dependent to the independent variables, and then simultaneously, rather than sequentially, determine their separate effects by multiple correlation. This transformation of common knowledge to quantitative terms makes it possible to measure the probable effects of changing conditions upon requirements, assisting in the sound interpretation of economic policies. The utility of the results of such dynamic analysis is in sharp contrast to the sterility of the trends and other simple empiricisms of descriptive statistics. It is not intended in this study to throw light on the reasons why any motor fuel at all is consumed; but to discover relationships explaining why more was consumed at one time than at another. The accompanying figures show a jig arranged for separating the middle product or middlings obtained in the concentration of certain ores, minerals, coal, etc. In the preparation for sizing, prior to jigging, of ore-bearing minerals, coal, etc., with their impurities, it is generally desirable to avoid reducing them to unnecessarily small sizes. Where the impurities adhere to the mineral particles or are disseminated through its mass, it is generally necessary to crush to such a fineness as will unlock the minerals from the gangue. If a considerable proportion of the material consists of mixtures of the minerals and gangue, each in large size, and a lesser proportion consists of a mixture of the two, in smaller sizes of various dimensions, it is not always desirable to reduce the whole to such size as would be required to liberate completely the pieces of ore and gangue in the finest mixtures. "Belts of Yellowknife Supergroup volcanic and sedimentary strata in the Slave Structural Province are separated by granitoid complexes. The strata and most intrusive rocks are 2.7 and 2.5 Ga old, but rocks around 3.1 Ga have been recognized in some of the complexes and are believed to represent a once-extensive sialic crust. Volcanics were erupted along rifts in this crust and the rifts became sites of crustal foundering and the development of troughs that filled with turbidites of volcanic and granitoid provenance. Present margins of the granitoid complexes may be close to the original margins of deposition of volcanics, with associated mineral deposits, and close to the thickest parts of basins of sedimentation.The Hackett River volcanic belt extends 100 kilometres between Mara River and Back River and is crudely S-shaped, with a northern sector surrounding a core of granitoid basement rocks, a northeasterly facin g central sector and a southerly facing southern sector. Up to 8 kilometres of andesitic volcanics with intercalated felsi c volcanic rocks are preserved within the central sector. The f elsic rocks include thick lenses of volcaniclastics with large, quartz-eye-bearing clasts, but the known metal deposits are not associated with these. Both of the deposit areas, the Hackett River area in the northern domal sector and the 'A itch ' Lake area 40 kilometres to the south in the central sector, are near the tops of relatively thin atypical volcanic sequences above suspected basement rocks. The Yava deposit near 'A itch , Lake overlies a unit of subaerially deposited, welded, andesit ic ash flows and the Hack ett River deposits overlie highly metamorphosed volcaniclastic rocks that include suspected ignimbrites.The deposits are notably argentijerous and lead-rich. They consist of stratigraphically zoned sheet-like bodies of iron sulphides, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite underlain by altered rocks containing chalcopyrite stringers. The Yava deposit was formed where hydrothermal fluids exuded through the fractured floor of a flooded caldera basin. The Hackett River deposits may have been formed in a similar setting and it is not inconceivable that all the known deposits in the belt were formed in a single large caldera basin, although there is no independent evidence for the required major fault separation between the Hackett River dome and the 'Aitch' Lake area."

"Gulf Minerals (Canada) Limited' s Rabbit Lake Uranium Operation is located in the northern portion of Saskatchewan, 198 miles southeast of Uranium City and 134 miles northwest of Lynn Lake Manitoba.This paper describes flow sheet changes to solve operating problems and briefly describes future changes to accommodate the new ""B"" Zone ore.The Rabbit Lake mill was designed to process 1600 dry tons per day of uranium ore, with an average grade of 0.370 percent u3o8. In 1981, the mill processed 2040 tons per day at a grade of 0.231 percent u3o8 . The process modifications and flow sheet changes that allowed this increase in tonnage will be discussed in relative chronological order. Mill feed was introduced on June 10, 1975, the original equipment consisted of an Ingersoll Rand hydraulic breaker mounted over a 24"" square grizzly. The - 24"" ore was fed to a 2011 X 6"" seflli autogenous grate discharge mill close circuited with 20"" cyclones, the mill discharge was screened on a tyler double deck screen with the undersize (8 rnesh) reporting to the cyclones, the screen oversize was returned by conveyor belt to the mill feed chute.The cyclone overflow (28 mesh) was thickened in a 100' diameter thickener to obtain 55 percent solids for the leach circuit.The leach circuit consisted of two slurry holding tanks and five leach tanks."

"The pressure oxidation autoclave at the Goldcorp’s Red Lake Gold Mines (RLGM) was commissioned in 1991. Since commissioning, the circuit has been well maintained and its capacity increased to mechanical and gaseous oxygen limitations. With advances in available technology, opportunities to produce more sulphide concentrate and a changing business environment, an optimization project has been initiated at RLGM. A multi-phase approach has been developed to optimize both the operations and economics of the circuit. This paper describes the history and future of the autoclave circuit at RLGM.AcknowledmentsWe would like to thank the operations and maintenance staff at Red Lake Gold Mines for their support and openness of mind to enact changes to enhance the operation. We would also like to acknowledge the members of the integrated team from Red Lake maintence, metallurgy, operations and corporate technical services that did the hard work to push past the status quo in order to advance productivity.OpportunityThe Red Lake Gold Mines (RLGM) pressure oxidation (POx) circuit has been in operation for over 25 years processing the high sulphide content gold bearing minerals. Increased sulphide concentrate production from improved flotation recovery and increasing gold sulphide association at depth has led to the POx circuit becoming a throughput bottleneck. The opportunity exists to process increased tonnages of sulphide concentrates and increase gold production. In order to realize this value, it will be necessary to increase the throughput capacity of the POx circuit.BackgroundThe POx autoclave at the RLGM, commissioned in 1991, was Canada’s first gold autoclave. It was installed to replace the two-stage fluid bed roaster that was built when the Campbell mine and mill were constructed in the late Forties. The circuit was originally designed to process 12.5 t/d sulphide sulphur in about 50 t/d of Campbell flotation concentrate. Following the merger of the Campbell and Red Lake Mines in 2006, the POx circuit started processing flotation concentrate from both Campbell and Red Lake Mills. In recent years, the circuit has been processing about 18 t/d sulphide sulphur in 75-85 t/d flotation concentrate."

In a study of the structure and properties of tungsten wire used for lamp filaments, it became desirable to perform transmission electron microscopy on the wire in the annealed as well as in the drawn condition. Wire used for lamp filaments is generally drawn to diameters less than 0.010 in. which is too fine for the preparation of transmission samples from single wires. Thus, it is clear that some assembly of wires must be used to form a "wire sheet" similar to that used by Glenn and Duff.' Also, because recrystallized tungsten wire is brittle at room temperature, the "wire sheetJ' must be rigidly contained during any subsequent grinding and polishing operation. The results of an experimental and theoretical research study into the spatial and temporal behavior of dust in mine airways is summarized. Experiments were performed in mine airways under both controlled and normal operating conditions. The controlled experiments included the documentation of the concentration and deposition patterns for two types of dust under three different velocities. Real-time dust concentration data were obtained using real-time aero- sol monitors (RAM-I) to determine the dispersion coefficient in a mine airway. On the theoretical font, a convection diffusion model of the dust flow phenomenon in mine airways was developed considering dominant mechanisms affecting dust transport and deposition in mine airways. Mechanisms modeled include turbulent and gravitational deposition, coagulation, and dispersion. In this paper, comparative analyses of results (8 the controlled experiments with the predictions of the mathematical model are presented. In addition to the overall validity, the adequacy of the individual components of the model, such as deposition in the total and respirable range, and dispersion are examined in light of the experimental observations. The experimental data from controlled experiments compared more favorably with model predicted results for similar conditions as opposed to the comparative analysis results for in-mine experiments. Specifically, the model predictions for an 800-m stretch of a mine airway reveal some significant differences from the behavior noticed in the mine. The deposition was lower than that predicted by the model. Consequently, concentrations were higher than those predicted by the model. The implications of these and other findings for further investigations are discussed in the paper.

A new type of groundwater cutoff wall has been developed at the University of Waterloo. The Waterloo Barrier? is a steel sheet piling system that incorporates a sealable cavity at each interlocking joint. In order to prevent leakage through the joints, the sealable cavity is flushed clean and injected with sealant after the installation of the piling. The installation and sealing procedures of the Waterloo Barrier? system allow for a high degree of quality control resulting in a very low permeability cutoff wall. Based upon field installations, the bulk wall hydraulic conductivity of the Waterloo Barrier? ranges from 10-8 to 10-10 cm/sec. Recent case histories are presented in which Waterloo Barrier? vertical cutoff walls have been used to prevent the off-site migration of contaminated groundwater or soil gases. In some instances, the Waterloo Barrier? system was used in combinations of applications such as preventing the migration of contaminants, redirecting the flow of groundwater, providing structural shoring for soil excavation and aiding in site de-watering processes.

For the Danish landworks for the coming fixed link between Denmark and Sweden across the Øresund the focus has been on the environmental aspects of the construction and operation of the facilities. This paper describes how the environmental objectives pertaining to the project have influenced the design and construction of one of the major elements of the Danish landworks, i.e. the tunnel in Sydhavnsgade and under Sydhavn Station. The chosen construction methods for the construction pit bracing and the groundwater lowering will be described along with the observed effects on the environment as shown by simulated or measured values for noise impact, settlements, pumped groundwater and extension of the drawdown cone.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are studying the time- dependent response of rock stressed along weakness planes. The objective is to improve mine safety by reducing the number of roof falls that cause injuries and fatalities to miners. Researchers conducted direct- shear tests on mudstone overcored from a coal mine roof. Results showed frictional strength weakens with displacement along the shearing planes. Results of direct-shear creep tests also showed time-dependent deformation. Test measurements were compared to classical analytical models. Results suggest that the risk of roof collapse may be decreased through layout and support design to reduce creep rates and thus slow progression toward failure.

"Sodium Isopropyl Xanthate is employed in a wide variety of sulphide flotation procedures due to the specificity over other xanthates and the cost savings over other sulphide collectors such as thionocarbamates, xanthogen formates and dithiophosphates. An investigation carried out by Tennants Research Technology Applications (TRTA), has produced a chemically enhanced SIPX that has shown all the advantages of normal SIPX along with improved recoveries.Currently, FLEX 31 is manufactured at the Prospec Chemicals xanthate plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. Prospec, founded in 1983, produces approximately 4500 tonnes of xanthates per year and is presently undergoing expansion to produce approximately 6000 tonnes. The proprietary process for FLEX 31 is a new addition to plant operations that include the production of xanthates, thionocarbamates and xanthogen formates.This paper will cover the testwork on the zinc flotation circuit at the Louvicourt Mine in Val d'Or, Quebec. This testwork indicated that FLEX 31 could replace SIPX due to the ability of the FLEX to improve zinc flotation kinetics without adversely affecting final concentrate grade. FLEX has presently replaced SIPX in the zinc circuit at Louvicourt.BackgroundThe Louvicourt deposit is hosted by greenschist facies Archean volcanic rocks located in the southeast portion of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt. In the Val d'Or area, the volcanic rocks form an east-west striking, steeply dipping and south-facing sequence composed of thick mafic and ultramafic flows of the Lower Malartic Group.The joint venture has three partners-Aur Louvicourt Inc. (30%), Novicourt Inc. (45%) and Teck Corp (25%). Aur Resources holds 30% interest through Aur Louvicourt, a wholly owned subsidiary and is the operator of the project. Novicourt Inc. is 60.9% held by Noranda.Approximately 75% to 85% of Louvicourt's revenue comes from the sale of copper; 10% from gold (in the copper concentrate); 7% from zinc and 3% from silver (also in the copper concentrate) The copper at Louvicourt is fairly ""fast floating"". About 60% of the copper in the ore can be concentrated in the first flotation cells with feed grades of approximately 4% copper.The initial testwork and pilot trials had indicated that it would be difficult to achieve zinc grades over 52% and recoveries would have to be kept at a level amenable to salable concentrate grades. The actual mill results, with a fine regrind, achieved zinc grades of 55% to 56% at about 75% recovery."

An intelligent discussion of the oil situation and its needs, whether from the standpoint of the prospector, the operator, the engineer, or the public administrative officer, must be founded upon a knowledge of the law under which oil lands are obtained. A consideration of new legislation must be prefaced by an understanding of the present law and its results. This paper undertakes to present no new remedy for the ills of the present situation, no new solution of the problems the oil business is facing. It attempts merely to summarize the present law, its provisions, its origin, its development, and its effects. The discussion does not pretend to be exhaustive from a legal standpoint. It aims to avoid legal intricacies which tend to. confuse rather than clarify. It seeks but to present the essentials of the existing situation. The title to government lands known to contain valuable deposits of petroleum may be acquired only under the terms of the placer law as embodied in Section 2329 et seq. of the Revised Statutes. As a preliminary to considering the desirability of this situation it is profitable to examine into its origin. Origin of the Law Congress has left no room for doubt as to the legal applicability of the placer law to oil lands. The Act of Feb.11, 1897(29 Stat., 526), provides: "that any person authorized to enter lands under the mining laws of the United States may enter and obtain patent to land containing petroleum or other mineral oils, and chiefly valuable therefor, under the provisions of the laws relating to placer mineral claims.' . The immediate cause for the passage of this Act was stated in a brief report in the, House of Representatives (there was no debate in the Senate) to be a decision of the Department rendered Aug. 27, 1896 (Union Oil Co., 23 L. D., 223), directing the cancellation of an oil placer entry on the ground that land containing petroleum cannot be located and entered as a placer mine. The report of the Public Lands Committee of the House contains the following interesting statements Congressional Record, vol. xxix, p. 1409):

The Musselwhite mine, located in northwestern Ontario, Canada, has been an underground narrow-vein gold producer since the spring of 1997. As an exploration project at the feasibility stage, much effort was undertaken to generate a geostatistical resource model that would integrate the orebodyÆs geological features, as well as the controls on mineralisation. Today as an operating mine producing over 200 000 ounces of gold per year, reconciliation studies of the tonnes and grades treated at the mill, with the feasibility model, for longer time periods, and with the grade control models, for shorter time periods, show results that are in good agreement. It was clearly demonstrated with the reconciliation to production, that the key to good reconciliation remains in the proper selection and application of the geological resource estimation method. The application of a grade interpolation technique capable of capturing threedimensionally pertinent geological features, as well as accounting for spatial grade continuity, proved to be successful in the predictability of tonnage and grade at the Musselwhite mine. Along with good mine practices, this approach, which was carried through to the operation, has produced excellent reconciliation results. The ongoing reconciliation studies at Musselwhite allow for a constant revision of the grade estimation strategy. In return, this optimisation process adds value by raising the accuracy level of production expectations. As this is an evolving practice at the mine site, further implementation developments are recommended to integrate these reconciliation procedures on a more regular basis.

Abstract - As the US coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face- ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity. Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 68% of the nation's underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing techno- logical climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential for in situ mining (ISM) of gold and silver mineralization. This preliminary study examined samples from several types of deposits. It used light optical microscopy and the electron microprobe to characterize the ore and gangue minerals and textural features of these samples. This included the spacial relations between the target minerals and likely natural fluid channel ways. Low-grade disseminated deposit types from the western US were found to contain fracture- hosted or matrix-hosted gold and silver minerals, some of which are encapsulated by quartz or pyrite. Successful ISM application to gold and silver deposits needs this data in order to understand potential problems of the lixiviant reaching the ore minerals.
