Old tailings from Zn, Au, Cu, and Ni mining operations were characterized. Their mineralogical variation in depth is compared with matching pore water and solids chemistry. A geochemical model was used to predict minerals precipitating from pore water solutions. These are compared with actual secondary minerals occurring. The degree to which the precipitation of secondary minerals controls the sulfate and iron concentration of the pore water was also investigated. The results obtained are related to the selection of the most appropriate modes of tailings deposition.

The earliest discovery and mining of coal in the northern area of the Greta Coal Measures at Anvil Creek in 1862 was by William Farthing, however, some official records attribute the discovery to Thomas Frost in 1864. Frost's discovery was examined by William Keen, government examiner of coalfields, and further prospecting was carried out. This was followed by the pioneering work of C S Wilkinson, government geologist in 1884. Subsequently in 1886 C S Wilkinson entrusted a detailed survey of the coalfield to the then geological surveyor, T W Edgeworth David.The outcrop of the Greta Coal Measures around the Lochinvar dome was mapped by Edgeworth David and as soon as he reported his discovery, the Department of Mines reserved in the interests of coal mining an area of 23700 acres, which extended between what became the South Greta and Abermain No I Collieries.

Sylvia Whitehead (Petrologist, The Broken Hill Propriety Co. Ltd., Melbourne, Australia) — Examination of thin sections of jaspilites from numerous banded iron formations in Australia has revealed no evidence to suggest that silicate minerals have formed by reaction between magnetite and silica. Textural relations indicate that part of the magnetite crystallized very early in the history of the rocks, probably during diagenesis, and remained stable under conditions of metamorphism altering only to hematite or limonite under conditions of oxidation and weathering. Many jaspilites also contain later magnetite which is almost certainly of metamorphic origin. Wherever magnetite is present in quartz rich bands containing little or no silicate or carbonate, it is very fine grained and occurs generally as isolated, well formed octahedral crystals or as small crystalline aggregates. These show no evidence of corrosion or reaction with the quartz even in rocks where adjacent bands contain silicate minerals of moderate to high metamorphic grade. The recent nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble-salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. These results also indicate that the sign of the surface charge has a significant effect on the extent of particle dispersion/aggregation. In this regard, the nature of such particle interaction forces at high ionic strengths are examined to improve our understanding of these systems. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is now being used to directly measure the interaction forces responsible for the stability of these alkali halide aggregates observed in optical microscopy studies. Results from this study indicate that, while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions.

In a recent investigation1 on the properties of chromium, and of Cr-10 wt pct W and Cr-5 wt pct Mo alloys at elevated temperatures, it was found that intercrystalline cavities developed in all of these materials during tensile creep at 950°C, and that the cavities led to intercrystalline fracture. There were some interesting differences, however, between the cavities produced in the pure metal and those in the alloys; these differences, moreover, were associated with a difference in ductility. The relevant conditions of creep testing are specified in the captions to Figs. 1 and 3. Chromium showed the presence of quite large intercrystalline cavities, Fig. 1, and these were more or less randomly distributed around the boundaries. The chromium alloys, on the other hand, showed the presence of both small cavities and cracks at the grain boundaries, Fig. 3; it is apparent that the cracks are formed by the linking together of the small cavities. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) levels were measured in underground mines in the vicinity of diesel vehicles equipped with several types of emission control hardware. In general, the emission control devices appeared to reduce PAH levels, but the companion mutagen study suggested that the reduction might not always be beneficial. All underground PAH concentrations were below the threshold at which a significant impact on health might be expected, but recent animal exposure studies have indicated that PAHs may not be the primary hazard from chronic diesel fume exposure.

In the manufacture of steel for commercial purposes, the deoxidation practice used, i.e., the method and degree of deoxidation, is an important factor affecting the structure and mechanical properties of the finished steel. Deoxidation practice exerts a pronounced influence not only on the soundness of the ingots but also on the reaction of the steel to a number of mechanical and thermal treatments. The first mentioned effect of deoxidation is more or less obvious and was first demonstrated, though perhaps not fully appreciated, by Robert Mushet when, in 1856, he added speigeleisen to low-carbon bessemer blown metal. In 1861. Bessemer patented the addition of one pound per ton of silicon to his blown metal to "cause the metal to lie quietly in the mold." The second effect of deoxidation-—that is, the effect on the properties and behavior of the steel—is, one might say, more subtle, and certainly not as well understood as the first, although in many cases it is the more important consideration. This paper is limited to a discussion of only the second effect of deoxidation and: in particular, to the effect on the strain-sensitivity of low-carbon steels. General Discussion Originally it was thought that the function of a deoxidizer was to combine with the oxygen present in the steel as iron oxide and prevent its subsequent evolution as a gas. -More recently it has been realized that a deoxidizer does more than this. Frequent reference has been made to the effect of deoxidizers on the nitrogen in the steel, and some attention has also been paid to hydrogen. As a consequence of the above situation any study of deoxidation must be concerned with the gas content of the steel and the effect of the deoxidizer on the gases involved. The term "gas content" as used here refers to gases extracted from steel during melting in vacuum rather than to elements present in steel in the gaseous state. The extracted gases, at least in the case of oxygen and nitrogen, are generally accepted to be products of decomposition of oxides, nitrides, or other more complex compounds. The manner in which deoxidation affects the gas content of steel and the significance of gases in steel have been and still are subjects of considerable speculation. No attempt will be made here to give a complete discussion of the literature on this subject but a few references will be cited for purposes of illustration. N. Hamilton1 found a correlation between the oxygen content of alloy steel and the behavior of the steel during tube piercing. Davenport, Bain, and others associated oxygen with aging properties of steel while Köster5 and a number of others6-lo made similar claims for nitrogen. A fully instrumented laboratory electrowinning cell has been used to produce nickel cathodes from synthetic solutions containing various impurities in order to evaluate the effects of both metallic ions and organic reagents (from prior solvent extraction and other processes) on the quality of the electrodeposited nickel. The conditions used were typical of those employed in industrial electrowinning operations. The impurities were found to alter the crystal size and shape, induce the development of hydrogen pits on the deposit surface, incorporate as metal hydroxide crystals in the deposit, and alter the internal stress and current efficiency. These effects have been interpreted in terms of previously established relationships between the solution composition and the physical properties of the cathodes. The incorporation of the common metal impurity ions into the deposit have been interpreted in terms of a mass transport controlled reduction or precipitation reactions. In particular, a low concentration of aluminium ions resulted in an initial highly deleterious effect, which was replaced by a positive influence at higher concentrations. A model which involves the buffering effect of the aluminium on the pH at the cathode surface has been proposed.

A design procedure for the quantitative estimation of support load requirements in underground mines is presented. The central problem in the design of mine support is one of es¬timating a maximum load that the ground will exert on the support in the coarse of mining. The distribution of stress around mine openings changes as mining progresses. At the time of support installation, the support load is essentially zero. With the passage of time and advance of the face, ground motion loads the support. The finite element method of analysis provides a simple quantitative technique for simulating the effects of mining and face advance on support load requirements. In particular, the maximum support load can be estimated by the proposed design procedure.

[The formation of gas hydrates in natural-gas pipe lines depends on temperature and pressure conditions in the lines as well as on the presence of condensed water. The operating pressure in a pipe line may be determined easily and usually is available from the records of operation, but the temperature seldom is known. In cooperation with the American Gas Association, the Bureau of Mines, in its investigation of gas hydrates, conducted a pipe-line-temperature survey and studied underground temperatures at depths at which pipe lines ordinarily are buried and the relationship of these temperatures to prevailing atmospheric conditions. A similar but more limited study of this type was, conducted by engineers of the Bureau of Mines a number of years ago.4/A summary of the earlier findings was included in a general report by the Bureau on the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines.5/ In the present study, data on temperature variations were obtained at several places widely separated geographically. This information should assist pipe-line engineers in designing and operating natural-gas pipe lines. In the pipe-line-temperature survey here resorted, a study was made along a 22-inch natural-gas pipe line: originating near Amarillo, Tex., and extending northwestward through New Mexico into Colorado (fig. 1). The question of the influence of gases upon the properties of copper has received the attention of a number of investigators, among whom Sieverts,' Iwase,2 Lobley and Jepson3 stand preeminent. Solubility of Gases in Copper Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a variety of gases in the metal in the solid and liquid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metal. In this respect they disagree with Lobley and Jepson, who have based their opinions upon the appearance of small ingots of the metal which had been fused in an atmosphere of one or other of three gases and had then been rapidly cooled, while surrounded by gas, to the freezing point (rate—possibly 30" to 60" C. per sec.). The ingots that had been fused and cooled under nitrogen and carbon monoxide were free from blowholes and it was assumed that these gases were not absorbed in amounts much in excess of those which would dissolve in the solid metal; the ingots similarly treated under hydrogen were full of blowholes and it was assumed in this case that gas was ejected on solidification of the copper. The effect of varying the rate of freezing upon the character of the test ingots was not examined by these investigators; otherwise, it is felt, their views might have been subject to modification. Sieverts' most important contribution is that the solubility of a gas in any metal is proportional to the square root of its pressure or concentration. Acid mine drainage (AMD), which is a major source of mining pollution, often contains ferric and/or ferrous ions together with several toxic elements. The ferric and ferrous ions in AMD precipitate in several mineralogical forms after neutralization, and the ferric/ferrous precipitates become the main component of the sludge generated after AMD treatment. The precipitates are also good absorbents for several toxic elements. To avoid generation of voluminous sludges and the re-dissolution of toxic elements from the sludge, it is very important to generate well-draining and efficiently adsorbing sludges by controlling the mineralogical form of the ferric/ferrous precipitates. Green rust, which is ferric and ferrous hydroxide, is a double layer hydroxide which is able to sorb several toxic elements. The green rust transforms to goethite or lepidocrocite by rapid oxidation, whereas it transforms to magnetite at ambient temperature by slow oxidation. The magnetite is also good absorbent especially for toxic cations and it makes a compact sludge due to its magnetic properties. We investigated the magnetite generation process at ambient temperature in detail. The magnetite generation process can be divided into three steps; (i) oxidation of Fe(II), (ii) Fe(II) surface complexation to Fe(III) hydroxide, and (iii) crystallization of magnetite. More magnetite can form when the oxidation rate is slower than the crystallization rate, and optimum conditions for its formation are at pH 9.5 with mild agitation. Ferrihydrite is the most common precipitate and it is able to sorb many different toxic elements. However, it drains badly and its solid/liquid separation properties are poor. We investigated the removal mechanism of several toxic elements by co-precipitation with ferrihydrite. We confirmed that the removal mechanism by co-precipitation partly involved surface precipitation when the initial ratio of toxic elements to ferric ion was high, although the main mechanism was always surface complexation. When surface precipitation occurred, highly efficient toxic element removal with ferrihydrite could be achieved.

An assessment is made of the potential for thick seam underground mining of black coal in Australia. A brief summary is given of the geo-mechanical environment and previous mining history existing in a number of areas of particular interest from the point of view of thick seam mining. A classification of thick seam mining methods is presented with emphasis on the critical geo-mechanical parameters influencing the performance of such methods. A summary is made of perceived geo-mechanical research requirements related to thick seam mining in Australian coalfields.

A laboratory mineral-dressing investigation of manganese ore from the Martin mine, Independence County, Ark., succeeded in recovering ferrograde manganese products. Sintered flotation concentrates analyzing 40.7 and 41.4 percent manganese at overall recoveries of 54.6 and 47.7 percent, respectively, were produced from preconcentrated feed, Preconcentration of the ore for flotation included treatment by magnetic separation and by a combination of magnetic separation and heavy-medium processing. The mineral-dressing study of the Martin mine rhodochrosite ore was part of a general program of the Bureau of Mines to develop domestic sources of strategic minerals, including manganese. Several such potential sources of manganese exist in the Batesville, Ark., district, one of which is represented by the Martin mine. Although the Martin mine area has not been delimited with respect to total reserve tonnage, it is considered to be one of the more important occurrences of manganese in the district. It is estimated that several 100,000 tons of manganese carbonate ore are present in this and similar properties.

In his excellent paper, Dr. Schuhmann has proposed a mechanism for conlrninution which can be utilized to explain a number of phenomena which have been observed in the size reduction of solids. The difference between the product obtained from a ball mill and from a rod mill can readily be explained by Dr. Schuhmann's hypothesis. Consider that the size distribution of the product from each comminution event is given by y; - 100 (x/ki) (1) where Yi is the cumulative percent finer than size x, ki is the size modulus, and is the distribution modulus for the single comminution event. The total product from a cornminution operation will be the summation of the products from all of the individual cornrninution events. If the size moduli from the various comminution events range from kl to kn , the size distribution of the total product will be a straight line on a log-log plot only to a particle size equal to k ,. 'Thus, the total product from a comminution operation will be a straight line on a log-log plot strictly up to a particle size equal to kl and above that size the line will curve so that y will equal 100 for the coarsest particle or k, (see Fig. 1). The actual shape of the size of distribution curve will depend upon the relative number of conmninution events of different kinds. In the case of ball milling, the ratio kn/kl may be pite large and there will be considerable deviation at the coarse sizes in a Schuhmann plot. kIowever, the grinding action in a rod mill is such that fine particles are protected from the rods by the coarse particles. Consequently, kn/kl will be quite small and the product from a rod mill will give a straight line Schuhmann plot almost to y equal 100%. In his paper, Dr. Schuhmann also has presented a very straightforward definition of grindability derived from the basic energy equation E = Ak-a (5) where E is the energy required to comminute a material to a size modulus of k and A is a constant. According to Dr. Schuhmann, the grindability of a material is the volume of material comminuted finer than unit size per unit of energy expended, this being 1/A. For comparison of grindabilities at any size two numbers are required, both = and 1/A, and anyone tabulating grindabilities should give both of these numbers. Concerning the experimental determination of grindabilities, if the material being comminuted possesses distinct cleavage, the energy re quired for comminution is given by E = Ak-(a-y) (6) where y is small number less than = . Because of cleavage, less energy will be required for comminution. To be certain that cleavage does not affect the gindability of the material being tested, it is suggested that the method used by Dr. Charles for determining grindability be used to ascertain if the deviation exponent y is zero or finite. "The authors developed an online tube rheometer to supplement a Netzsch MiniCer (Netzsch GmbH, Germany) stirred media mill in order to monitor online the rheological characteristics of the suspension and therefore the result of grinding during the process. Previously it was demonstrated that the above measuring system was working appropriately based on the preliminary tests. The product related stress model was applied for the evaluation of the grinding results. It was found that the suspension concentration and the change of the material properties during grinding, consequently the rheology strongly affects the grinding result, i.e. specific surface area, median particle size as well as specific grinding energy. The tested model limestone – water suspensions behaved Newtonian initially, then after a given grinding time their properties had changed and they become Bingham plastic. INTRODUCTIONStirred media milling now is a common practice to produce fine and ultrafine granular materials for different purposes. With an increasing demand of ultrafine powders for industries (Kwade, 1999), wet and dry ultrafine grinding has been increasingly used in various fields, such as minerals (Mucsi, Rácz, & Mádai, 2013)(Rácz, 2014), ceramic materials (Becker & Schwedes, 1999), pigments (Ohenoja, Illikainen, & Niinimäki, 2013), chemical products (Baláž et al., 2013), microorganisms (Kwade & Schwedes, 2002) and pharmaceutics (Afolabi, Akinlabi, & Bilgili, 2014). It is well known that suspension rheology affects the wet comminution of materials (He, Wang, & Forssberg, 2006a). The rheological behaviour of the suspension containing the ground particles might indicate the level of interparticle interaction or aggregation and therefore it is an important variable factor of the process control (Muster & Prestidge, 1995). The influence of the rheological behaviour of mineral suspensions on their grindability has attracted more and more interests and attention, especially on ultrafine grinding performance (He, Wang, & Forssberg, 2006b) (Bernhardt et al., 1999). However, there are still many issues concerning the machine and the process for the different applications. When grinding is effective and the particle size range decreases significantly, the circulating suspension is becoming typically non-Newtonian. The changed rheological behaviour and the increasing rheological material parameters can negatively affect the grinding efficiency; therefore it is an important issue. Ultrafine stirred media milling as well as solid-liquid two phase flow have been studied for a long time at the Institute of Raw Materials Preparation and Environmental Processing of the University of Miskolc. Regarding ultrafine grinding the research is focusing on the description of materials’ grindability (energetic aspects) both in wet and dry circumstances (Mucsi et al., 2013; Rácz, 2014). Concerning rheology, the three measuring pipes tube rheometer was developed decades ago (Faitli & Gombköto, 2015). So far many different solid materials from all over the world had been tested in this rheometer (Faitli & Gombköto, 2015). Main aim of these tests was to gain basic data for large scale hydraulic transport applications. Among the many stirred media mills there is a Netzsch MiniCer mill at the Institute. It was reasonable to combine the two fields together, and the goal of the research presented in this paper is to develop an online tube rheometer for the Netzsch mill and to carry out grinding and rheological testing simultaneously."

1.0 FRAMEWORK FOR COMPARISON This document describes the decision factors that bear on the selection of the modulation process for the wireless underground medium frequency (MF) communication system. The selected modulation process must satisfy the Bureau of Mines stated objective of improving general communications within an underground mine. The improvement being sought includes the development of a wireless communication technology of measurable benefit to both mine safety and mine productivity. The improvement will allow wireless communications paths to exist between roving miners. The wireless communication paths will also be made compatible with the existing underground telephone system to extend paging and voice communication throughout the underground mine. The new wireless equipment will include man-pack, vehicular, repeater, and base station transceivers. Repeaters and base stations will feature coupling networks for interfacing with the existing telephone circuits. Frequency modulation (FM) and single sideband (SSB) modulation processes are analyzed in view of the special conditions associated with underground mining. Of primary importance is the tremendous electrical noise generated in an operating mine that could adversely affect communications quality. High noise coupled with high attenuation rate of near field signals forces the communication system to be inherently short range. Fortunately, near field signals can propagate over great distances on underground wires and cables. The framework for comparison is generated by presenting all factors that

Pier, well cap and steining junction is a complicated 3-d re-ion. The prevalent design procedure for the pier, well cap and steining in isolated manner is not rational. In absence of an integrated approach for design of the junction structure, the well cap is designed uneconomical and at the same time pier and steining are left relatively unsafe. Strut-and-Tie Model based design is a simple solution to this problem. An example illustrating design of the junction structure using STM is presented. On comparison of the outcomes of the STM based design with the prevalent design, the following anomalies are found: i) For smooth flow of forces, length of pier at its base should preferably be made equal to the outer well diameter, ii) STM based design for the pier is more rational, economical and safe. iii) Due to presence of hoop stress, as indicated by the STM, the steining concrete in a depth of p times outer diameter of the well from the well cap level should be limited to M15 grade, iv) STM based design for the steining is more rational, economical and safe.

CORRUGATED sheet zinc has been used abroad for a great many years as a roofing material. In this country it has been in use for about 10 years. From the outset it was recognized that zinc sheets required closer spacing of the supporting purlins than steel sheets. Exact data regarding safe maximum fiber stresses were not available, however, and on occasions the span used was excessive and the sheets sagged. This paper describes both service and laboratory tests to determine safe maximum fiber-stress values for various grades of zinc for use in calculating the proper purlin spacings for any gage and profile under given loading conditions. These tests consist of laboratory loading tests on full-size roof sections over extended periods of time; of actual roof installations erected in conformity with the indications of the laboratory tests and observed over a period of years; of careful determinations of the apparent elastic limit of several grades of zinc, and finally of static tests1 (so-called creep tests) to determine the rate of flow of zinc under a variety of static tensile stresses at definite temperatures. Certain of the individual tests extended over a period of more than two years.
