In the present work, three different domestic iron ores; Sivas Divrigi B Head high grade hematite lump ore, Malatya-Hekimhan-Hasançelebi medium and low grade magnetite lump ores reduced with Soma-Kisrakdere lignite coal to investigate their suitability for sponge iron production. A laboratory scale box furnace was used to carry out the reduction experiments. In the experimental studies different operation parameters were selected being Cfix/Fetot. ratio, temperature in the range of 1100 - 1250 oC and time, to determine their effects on metallization. Metallization degree up to 90 % was found in the reduction experiments realized by using Sivas Divrigi B Head high grade hematite lump ore, whereas for Malatya-Hekimhan-Hasançelebi medium and low grade magnetite lump ores 60 - 65 % metallization degrees were obtained.

With greater effort being devoted to the discovery of new oil and gas reserves and a consequent increase in bottom hole pressures due to greater drilling depths, the phase relationships of hydrocarbon fluids at pressures above 10,000 lb psi are becoming increasingly important. The present paper discusses the results of research with a windowed cell on a methane-Kensol 16 system to pressures of 25,000 Ib psi and temperatures to 260°F. Kensol 16 is a commercial high narrow-boiling-range oil. It is shown that for the temperature range of 60 °F to 260 °F, this particular system exists in two phases to pressures of approximately 14,000 lb psi, and data are presented giving the relative amounts of liquid and vapor phase? coexisting under these conditions. Partial phase diagrams are shown for six different mixtures of methane and Kensol 16, three of which include the critical region. In contrast to mixtures composed of substances of fairly close volatility. critical opalescence was noted for as much as 200°F of the critical temperature. The critical locus of the methane-Kensol 16 system was estimated and the conventional pressure-composition and temperature-composition diagrams were prepared. From these, the equilibrium vaporization factors for methane and Kensol 16 were estimated for temperatures from 60 °F to 700 °F and to pressures above 12,000 lb psi. The relations of this study to petroleum production problems and other phase equilibria research are discussed. The mineral resource potential of the Los Bronces deposit was successfully evaluated by an intense, coordinated field program over a 37-month period (April 1978 - May 1981). This project was part of a much larger study to determine the economic feasibility of expanding the open-pit, mine-mill operation 10-fold to 80 kt/d (88,000 stpd). The resource project included more than 120 km (74 miles) of core drilling and 64 km (40 miles) of drill rig access way construction under adverse topographic and climatic conditions, detailed geological mapping, and other related activities. The Los Bronces deposit is composed of an earlier mineralized porphyry-type body intruded in part by a large complex of mineralized hydrothermal breccia pipes. The mineralization is hosted by intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. Various stages of erosion, oxidation, leaching, and supergene enrichment of copper are present. Drill hole indicated geologic reserves are estimated at 1.3 Gt (1.4 billion st), averaging 0.81% copper and 0.016% molybdenum at a cutoff grade of 0.6% copper equivalence decreasing to 0.25% over the life of the mine. Trace amounts of silver are also present.

The Warner Process has been devised to produce zinc metal directly from sulphide, thereby reducing the requirements for purchase of large amounts of energy in a special form. The process conditions for a practical process have been evaluated in an extensive program of research and development at the University of Birmingham. Recorded data now exists to take the process forward to commercial use within the next five years. The industrial economics have been evaluated. The cost of making zinc metal from zinc sulphide ore can be substantially lowered due to the reduced energy cost, locating zinc production in the neighbourhood of the mines and increasing ore to metal recoveries - particularly for fine-grained and pyritic ore. The approvals process for a major cut-back is not a simple exercise when a mine is located alongside the community. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) has been through an extensive process of government, JV owner and community consultation to ensure that necessary permitting processes and detailed studies have been completed to allow this six year extension to the open pit mine life to be achieved. With the Kalgoorlie Boulder community being on the doorstep of the mine, it is critical to ensure that the operation runs smoothly and complies to the license conditions to achieve the full value of the Golden Pike cut-back, and leave behind a sustainable legacy for the local community. An investigation of the creep deformation of coarse grained specimens of high purity aluminum in the temperature range 800' to 1150°F, permitted the formulation of a theory explaining the formation of kink bands. The X-ray Laue back-reflection technique was used in conjunction with metallographic studies to determine the crystallographic elements involved in kinking and to measure the rotations of the bands. THAT metals deform by the formation of kink bands was first shown by Orowan1 in 1942. He manually compressed cadmium single-crystal wires, the basal planes of which were parallel to the wire axis and to the direction of compression. He found that kink bands formed quite suddenly. Similar experiments were performed by Hess and Barrett2 on zinc with a hydraulic testing machine to permit slower more careful compression. They observed that kink bands formed progressively with increasing compression. Recently Washburn and Parker3 observed the formation of kink bands in zinc single-crystal specimens during tension creep experiments. Each of these authors observed the formation of kink bands but did not make a complete analyses of the crystallographic relationships. In addition to these studies on hexagonal metals, extensive investigations of kink bands formed during deformation of aluminum in tension at room temperature have been reported. Two types of deformation bands have been observed during the deformation of aluminum at room temperature. These are: 1—kink bands: these exhibit a sharp curvature of the lattice along certain surfaces, and 2—bands formed by secondary slip along certain regions. As has already been shown by Honeycombe,4 it is important to point out the difference characterizing the two types of deformation bands. In the first case. for moderate deformation, only one system of slip planes normally is active; in the second case, however, two slip systems are active in the deformation bands. The latter have a rumpled surface because of the action of the two slip systems. In the present work only the first type of band was studied and to avoid any confusion the term kink band will be used exclusively in the discussion which follows. Honeycombe' observed that very narrow kink bands (width, 0.01 mm) formed along the (110) planes during the deformation of high purity aluminum at room temperature. He observed narrower ones in commercially pure aluminum and found also that their width decreased with decreasing temperatures. Chen and Mathewson5 reported the formation of kink bands during tensile testing of single crystals of high purity aluminum at room temperature and pointed out that some rotation occurred about a [211] direction. The influence of the bending moment on the formation of kink bands was illustrated by the experiments of Rohm and Kochendorferl0 who used a Polanyi apparatus to obtain pure shear during tensile testing of high purity aluminum single crystals. Under such conditions only one slip system was active and no kink bands were observed; consequently, no noticeable asterism was detected after deformation. The influence of the bending moment will be discussed later. Calnan8 gave a detailed account of the work performed on kink bands obtained during deformation of aluminum at room temperature. Because no explanation of the process of kink band formation in creep was given in the previous investigations and because some of the above observations are vital to the following discussion the brief review of the literature has been given. It is proposed in the present work to provide an explanation of kink band formation during creep deformation at elevated temperatures. Results and Discussion Kink bands were observed to form during tensile creep testing of high purity (99.995 pct) aluminum specimens, having a very large grain size, in the temperature range 800" to 1150°F. These observations were made in grains which occupied the whole cross section of the specimen. Industrial flotation of sulfide ores is 80 years old. It has gone through many advances to date. However most flotation operations are still struggling to improve performance, which as a worldwide average is at the 90% level. What can be done to push the ceiling to 95% or better without performing finer primary grind, nor without duplicating flotation plant capacity? Such "unique task" can be performed by the low volume high capacity new flotation equipment known as the JAMESON CELL, when used as, "post-scavenger" of final plant tails. Improved efficiencies are obtained mainly from two cases: -Particles which never contacted a bubble. -Particles sheared-off by cell turbulence due to reduced number of hydrophobic sites. The application reverses conventional trend of using large volume mechanical cells by trade-in with smaller efficient equipment: resulting in reduced capital expenditures and operating costs. Outstanding "pre-rougher" applications are also presented.

THE purpose of this paper is to describe, in a general way, gold-dredg-ing operations in California, with particular reference to unusual features, including types of deposits and recent attempts to improve the recovery of the gold. DREDGING AREAS The gold-bearing formations that traversed the western slope of the Sierra Nevadas for a north and south distance of some 300 miles furnished the immediate source of the gold found in most of the placer deposits of California.. Erosion through a long period carried the gold, together with various forms of partly disintegrated material, to lower elevations and formed placer deposits. Through the classifying action of water in motion, the coarser gold and heavier material of various kinds were deposited relatively near the source; consequently, in' the higher moun-tain country, old river channels were worked feverishly during the early California gold-rush days because of their high gold content. With the working out of these known high-grade channels, and from the knowledge thus obtained of prehistoric stream beds, drift mining was started and flourished until about 1890. Even today many drift mines are operating with the objective of opening other old Tertiary river channels that have been covered by volcanic flows.

Introduction As practised during the last two years at the Vipond Consolidated gold mine, mining geology has meant the application of geology to the problem of finding, developing, and mining ore. This article reviews the results attained in Vipond mining geology as thus defined. Most effort was directed toward clarifying and interpreting the tangible physical causes of vein and ore localizations, and in the following pages these questions are dealt with in considerable detail. Discernment of the influence of rock folding and deformation on the localization of veins, and of the influence of certain structures and rocks in or near carbonaceous zones on the localization of ore-bodies, have been the main practical results of the studies. Consideration of some of the geological features of the Porcupine area, and of the geology and mining experience of the principal producing mines, has helped toward a perspective of Vipond's ore-finding problems. These features are first discussed. The background and procedure for Vipond mining geology, and the major results of the geological mapping, are then summarized. Then follows a résumé of tangible factors that influenced vein, ore-body, and gold localizations; and, next, explanations of the facts ascertained. Because they were found of little utility, many fascinating problems, such as the origin and mode of emplacement of the veins and lodes(l), the ultimate source of the ore, and the physico-chemical and mechanical agencies affecting vein and ore formation, are treated cursorily or are neglected in these notes.

The placement of sulfidic waste below the groundwater table ensures limited interaction with the hydrosphere and suppression of sulfide oxidation. However, if sulfidic waste is placed above the groundwater table and remains uncovered, the backfill becomes part of the unsaturated zone and is exposed to atmospheric oxygen and leaching. This study aims to establish the leaching behaviour of sulfidic waste placed above the groundwater table and the impact of such leachate on the local aquifer at the Thalanga base metal mine. Mining of the Thalanga copper-lead-zinc deposit resulted in a large final mining void (600 m + 150 m + 70 m) and extensive underground workings. The underground workings were partly filled with tailings and the open pit was partly backfilled with acid producing sulfidic waste rock. In addition, the pit serves as a sink for acidic run-off from adjacent waste rock piles and mine workings. To date, the backfill of sulfidic waste rock placed into the pit has not been capped with benign materials and for most of the dry season, the surface of the backfill is covered by melanterite-type efflorescences. Results of kinetic column leach experiments conducted on the sulfidic waste indicate that Cd, Cu, Zn and SO4 rich waters migrate from the backfilled sulfidic waste into the local unconfined aquifer. However, the seepage of alkaline (pH 7.3 - 8.0), high conductivity (>10 000 ¦S/cm) tailings waters into the remaining pit void clearly shows that the acid leachate originating from the sulfidic waste rock does not impact beyond the waste repository and its immediate environment. Geochemical modelling implies that minimal or no mixing occurs between the acid waste rock leachate and the alkaline tailings waters.

The construction of Norris Dam, built by the Tennessee Valley Authority on the Clinch River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, involved the production of coarse and fine aggregate for approximately 1,000,000 cu. yd. of concrete. A hammer-mill plant for the manufacture of sand from quarried rock was indicated as the most economical method of providing this material. The abrasive character of the feed as compared to the average hammer-mill feed made it necessary to control operations rather closely, and this resulted in the accumulation of many data hearing on production and maintenance. This paper will deal only with three specific sets of data, accompanied by such general information as may be necessary to explain the conditions under which they were obtained and followed by discussions on the relation of silica content to hammer wear, comparative costs of slugger and stirrup hammers, and comparative costs of tool-steel and manganese-steel grate bars. Coarse Aggregate Aggregate for the concrete poured at Norris Dam came from a dolomite quarry within 2000 ft. of the west abutment of the dam. Geologically this rock is known as a Knox dolomite. The recovery and recycling of low concentration metal and other ions has traditionally been carried out using adsorption or ion exchange processes which, however, become uneconomical at higher concentrations, such as those that occur with many intermediate or waste streams where recycling is now being required. This paper describes the development of a process based on non-dispersive solvent extraction for the recovery of chromium (VI) from electroplating rinse water. During the chromium plating of steel, the concentration of chromium (VI) in the rinse bath rises to concentrations in the order of 100 mg/L when it becomes unusable and is then disposed of. The aim of this work was to investigate processes for recovery and recycling of the chromium in the rinse bath. The recovered chromium is required to be concentrated and purified before reuse. Tertiary amines have been shown capable of concentrating and purifying the chromium (VI) in solution. However, solvent extraction processes that have been applied to the recovery and reuse of metals from waste streams have had only limited success in the past, primarily because of the relatively high solvent losses when existing contacting equipment is used on low feed concentrations. Attempts to eliminate losses by immobilizing these complexing agents on substrates have not been successful. In order to control the losses and maintain specificity, a hollow fibre-contained liquid membrane has recently been trailed in a pilot plant to recover chromium from chromium plating waste streams. Details of the trial and modeling of the results are presented, and show that the level of losses is significantly reduced. However, issues relating to fouling still need to be addressed. This type of equipment has many applications in the recovery and recycling of a range of materials in the manufacturing processes.

This study was aimed at a comparison of the efectiveness of a new axial-flow type of mixer impeller (the Prochem design) with the traditional inclined-blade turbine. The intended application of the mixers was in carbon-in-pulp plants for the extraction of gold from cyanide-leached pulps. The first part of the project involved water and ion-exchange resin, and measurement of the power drawn by the various sizes of impeller to fully suspend the resin. The rate of reaction between the resin and the solution was measured as a function of the power input to the mixer. In the second part of the project, use was made of activated carbon, silver cyanide solutions, and ore pulps. The rate of absorption of silver from the solutions and pulps was determined, as well as the rate of attrition of the activated carbon caused by the various impellers in clear water. The Prochem design of axial-flow impeller was shown to fully suspend solids at only one-quarter of the power requireabyan inclined-blade turbine of similar size. The axial-flow pattern produced was responsible for the more uniform vertical concentration profile of suspended beads produced by the Prochem design. These measurements verified the observations of other researchers that the rate of reaction is not affected by the ;design of impeller provided that al the solids are fully suspended. The Prochem design of impeller therefore achieved the same reaction rate as the conventional turbine at a quarter of the power input. The atrition rates of activated carbon could be correlated, in terms of the energy absorbed, by the same equation for al the impellers. Higher concentrations of activated carbon increased the amount of carbon fines produced. These results emphasize the importance of designing mixers for minimum power consumption.
