The development of the most important tool used in Site Testing is reviewed briefly and the application of the information gained is described. The operation of Site Testing and pregrouting of underground excavations is dealt with in detail. Practical experiences (and pitfalls into which the inexperienced might fall) are recorded. But for the application of Site Testing and grouting of shafts, tunnels and other excavations, vast areas of the present goldfields in South Africa would remain unexploitable.

The repressuring of oil-producing formations during the flush stage of production, although requiring primarily the same procedure as operations on formations where the gas pressure has been depleted, offers several advantages of major importance, the value of which has not heretofore been demonstrated. It is the purpose of this paper to present an account of some recent operations of this character and the economic effects on the properties where they were applied. The principal objective in all repressuring operations is to secure an effective diffusion of the input energy to all parts of the producing sand. If this can be accomplished, success is assured during the remainder of the life of the property; if not, it will be temporary only and will be followed by difficulties, .and the maximum possible recovery will not be obtained. During the past year in Texas, the Cook pool in Shackelford County, and the Turbeville pool in Archer County, while still in their flush stage of production, have been subjected to repressuring operations to observe their reaction to this process during the early stage of their productive periods. The repressuring operations carried on in each of these pools will be discussed separately in this paper in order to show peculiarities which were present in one pool but were not observed in the other. Turbeville Pool The Turbeville pool is in Archer County, about 30 rniles south of Wichita Falls. The productive sand varies in thickness from 10 to 30 ft., the average being about 16 ft. The depth of the sand varies from 1450 to 1530 ft. The developed productive area to date is approximately 200 acres, but the limits of the pool have not yet been proved. The sand varies considerably in different parts of the pool with respect to both porosity and permeability. The gravity of the oil varies from 39 to 41° A. P. I. There were some wells which flowed for a few days after completion but during 1927 all production was secured by pumping. The

Fall of ground is a leading source of worker injury and fatality indicating a persistent need for ground monitoring technology. The HRTMM is an experimental convergence monitor utilizing a digital camera and custom software to track the position of one or more lasers across the target. Apparent laser movement is proportional to target convergence. The HRTMM was installed in an underground mine near active operations to test its response to the mining environment. This included intense blasting vibration and mine fog. Results and potential of the new monitoring technology will be discussed.

Many Americans have seen Greenland while flying over it on their way to or from Europe. Few have visited this largest island in the world. Portions of the 20 percent of the territory that are not ice-covered are highly mineralized. Greenland could become very productive if the present interest in exploration increases. The people and Greenland’s history The population of Greenland is 57,000. Twenty percent are Europeans, mainly of Danish decent, while 80percent are native Greenlandic or mixed Greenlandic-European. The native population is the same as the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. They speak the same language.

"Proterozoic plutonic and volcanic rocks in the Franklin Mountains, west Texas, exhibit similar values in average concentrations of equivalent uranium (eU), equivalent thorium (eTh) and equivalent potassium (eK) when compared to Proterozoic igneous rocks of the southwestern United States. Variations of radioelement concentrations for all Proterozoic igneous rocks of the Franklin Mountains range from 1.1 to 357.1 ppm U, 2.1to 259.1 ppm Th and 2.5 to 10.2% K.Recent geologic mapping of the Proterozoic rocks in the Franklin Mountains revealed several types of granites previously unrecognized, and these warrant further exploration for U and Th resources. Fluorite-bearing granites and riebeckite pegmatites are likely targets for further investigation, as these have the highest U and Th concentrations compared to all other granites.IntroductionThis is a summary of the paper presented at the CIM Geology Division Uranium Symposium held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, September 8-13, 1981. Coal mining has been occurring on the Stockton Plateau for over 100 years. As a result of both natural conditions and mining activities, surface water on the plateau is known to have low pH and elevated metals concentrations, a condition known as acid rock drainage (ARD). Solid Energy New Zealand Ltd (SENZ), as owners of the current mining operations at Stockton desire to understand the nature and causes of ARD at Stockton to determine whether commercially viable options can be developed to improve the water quality to levels acceptable to the local community and regulators. A series of integrated water quality investigations have been performed towards developing a characterisation of the water quality on the Stockton Plateau and receiving waters. The investigations performed include: design and implementation of a water quality monitoring program to collect a satisfactory base of water quality data from which to develop an understanding of the water quality and its variability, and to collect data regarding the range of flow rates that occur in the principal streams; development of a hydrological model for the Plateau with the ability to predict flow rates at key locations on the plateau and on the Ngakawau River; field investigations of the bio-diversity of the plateau and surrounding areas, to develop a snapshot of the health of aquatic communities and whether streams draining mine workings are æadversely impactedÆ; eco-toxicology; waste dump seepage water quality monitoring at selected basal springs, drilling, investigations and permeability and geochemical testing; data processing of a range of historical data and the newly acquired data for the development of empirical relationships that describe the water chemistry system and its relationship in turn to flow rates in the streams; simulation of the long term water quality record for the measured parameters (pH, acidity and metals concentrations), based on the hydrological model and the empirical relationships developed from the new database; and preliminary development and examination of mitigation options for the ARD issues at the mine. The study has progressed towards design of pilot studies of options for mitigation of the generation of the ARD as well as treatment of the discharges. It is the integrated approach adopted by SENZ from an early time in the investigations, that has enabled fast-tracking of the pilot engineering trials. This paper presents the results of the field investigations and eco-toxicology studies and demonstrates the value of predictive modelling of water quality in the study area, even at a very early stage in the remedial engineering design process.

The anodic treatment of aluminum presents problems of scientific as well as of commercial interest.l-3 Of particular interest is the fact that, during the anodic oxidation process, the oxide continues to form at the metal-oxide interface under any oxide previously formed. This has led to speculation as to the mechanism involved in the formation of the relatively thick oxide coatings that are used commercially for decorative or protective purposes. Furthermore, the ability of certain types of oxide coatings to adsorb dyes and other substances has stimulated research to determine the actual structure of these adsorptive coatings. It has been found that anodic oxide coatings on aluminum are composed essentially of aluminum oxide. They are formed by the action of oxygen ions penetrating to the metal surface during the electrolytic oxidation treatment. These coatings can be formed in a number of different electrolytes, as for example, those which contain sulphuric acid, chromic acid, oxalic acid, or boric acid. These are the commonest and most useful electrolytes employed commercially. Except for certain specific conditions of formation, the coatings in general have been found to be amorphous alumina, as far as can be determined by X-ray or electron-diffraction methods. Anodic oxidation processes can be arranged in three rather general classes if they are grouped in relation to the solvent action of the electrolyte on the coating.4 In the first class, the electrolyte has little or no solvent action on the coating that is formed. In general, coatings produced under such circumstances are nonporous and non-adsorptive. In the second class, the electrolyte exerts an appreciable solvent action on the coating. These coatings are porous and adsorptive. Finally, for the third class, the electrolyte tends to dissolve the coating about as rapidly as it is formed. This action produces electrolytic brightening or anodic polishing of the aluminum surface and at most leaves only a very thin film of oxide. The nonporous and nonadsorptive type of oxide film is represented by the coatings that are formed when solutions of boric acid are employed as the electrolyte. It is especially significant that these impervious films are formed in electrolytes that exert little or no solvent action on the coating. Where a boric acid electrolyte is used, the coating tends to form rapidly, with the result that the flow of current is soon reduced to substantially zero. This indicates that the growth of the coating has stopped. As a rule, the thickness of the coating is roughly proportional to the voltage employed for formation and the coatings of this type are exceedingly thin. In connection with the problems of bumps in coal mines, much has been written concerning the manner in which roof action and methods of mining enter into the pressure effects observed but little has been written upon the relationship between the physical properties of coal and associated rocks and the cause of bumps. The question of the strength of bituminous coal, of its elasticity, and the energy it can absorb and store has been neglected to a considerable extent in connection with this problem. It is generally agreed that one of the necessary conditions for bumps is a strong coal.' Therefore, since the strength of coal is an important factor, a study of this property should be made. several investigators have conducted laboratory experiments upon the strength of coal, using small cubical or rectangular test pieces. An attempt will not be made to go into all of these investigations, but they are briefly summarized in Table I. Experiments of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and of Lawall and Holland (pp. 27 and 34 of ref. 9), however, indicate that regardless of whether the coal is a soft and weak semihituminous (Pocahontas No 3) or a hard and strong bituminous (Stockton) coal, the maximum ultimate unit stress developed in laboratory tests is higher in small cubes than in larger cubes of the Same coal.

A detailed treatment is given of the transient pressure behavior of a well located near a linear discontinuity. On either side of the discontinuity, the values of permeability, viscosity, compressibility, and porosity are uniform, but may be different from those on the other side of the discontinuity. These results generalize previously published works which assumed the permeability ratio for media on different sides of the discontinuity was zero, one, or infinity. One application of this material would be to facilitate detection of facies changes or fluid-fluid contacts by transient testing. Solutions, presented graphically, show pressure decline for constant rate fluid production. The range of variables examined includes dimensionless time from 0.1 to 100, rnohility ratio from 0.001 to 1000 and specific compressibility ratio from 0.001 to 1000. For dimensionless tinze less than 0.4, the pressure behavior is essentially that of a well in an infinite reservoir. Thus, reservoir properties near the well may be estimated in the usual manner. Using an overlay technique to match an experimental curve with one of the theoretical curves, it is possible to estimate the distance to a discontinuity by substituting the actual time t and the corresponding dimensionless time , at which a match occurs into the equation where is the diffusivity near the well, and may be estimated from data taken at early time. Because of both the complexity of the solutions and limited computer facilities, well interference problems were not examined extensively. However, it was found that well interference may be masked by the discontinuity in some cases. By superposition of the results of constant rate fluid production, the problenz of pressure buildup may be treated. Such results show that for early shut-in times correct values for the transnzissibility are obtained from conventional semilog plotting. However, erroneous values of the static reservoir pressure are obtained unless data at large shut-in times are taken. INTRODUCTION Transient well testing has yielded estimates of such reservoir parameters as static reservoir pressure, permeability. porosity, and well bore effects. In most tests, it was assumed that the reservoirs were homogeneous and iso-tropic. Anisotropic media' and radial discontinuities were considered.'.' Various studies have been made on multiple-layer reservoirs." ' Linear discontinuities have been described for problems of one-dimensional flow.' In the present paper, a mathematical treatment is given for a well located near a linear discontinuity in an otherwise infinite medium (see Fig. 1). An actual reservoir analogy would be a well in a relatively thin reservoir near a fluid-fluid contact, or a well located in a reservoir exhibiting a sudden change in rock and formation characteristics, such as thickness, porosity, or permeability. A sudden change in porosity or permeability may be caused by clay fill or other types of facies changes. Sudden thickness changes niay be the result of such geological formations as buried shore lines and channel deposits. In otherwise uniform formations, a linear discontinuity may be caused by fluid-fluid interfaces such as oil-water contacts. 3s-oil contacts, or gas-water contacts.

HYL has developed a sticking tendency test which accurately predicts behavior of iron oxide feedstocks in the HYL III process. Test results together with pilot plant experimentation and commercial scale demonstrations permit the conclusion that lump ores will not agglomerate at 960°C (1233 K) in an HYL III Plant. Pellets may also be processed without agglomeration at 960°C (1233K) with the addition of no more than 5 percent lump ore. Using the HYL III process, the ironmaker can exploit feedstock market conditions without sacrificing plant productivity or energy efficiency.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1985 was $405.9 million, a slight decrease from the record high of 1984. With the exception of clays, output of most nonfuel minerals increased over that of 1984. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of crushed marble and bauxite; third in firre clay; fourth in masonry cement and kaolin; fifth in portland cement and lime; and sixth in ferroalloys and recovered sulfur, Alabama ranked 20th in the Nation in value of nonfuel minerals produced, but ranked 13th in value of industrial minerals. Valuewise, Alabama produced 2.4% of the Nation's industrial minerals.

The quantitative determination of salt in petroleum ins generally divided into two steps - (1) extraction of salt from the oil and (2) accurate measurement of the extracted salt. This paper presents a method used by the Bureau of Mines for quantitatively extracting the water-soluble chloride salts4/ from petroleum and discusses important details attendant on the success of the method. Among these details are homogeneity in the dispersion of salt crystals, emulsified brine and other impurities in the oil sample, complete solution of the salt, and total extraction and titration of all the aqueous phase. Recently, the chlorides of sodium, calcium, and. magnesium produced with and present in various oils have developed growing problems of salt deposition and corrosion in the petroleum industry. Therefore, a technical study of various emulsions and salts that accompany petroleum is being made by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma. One report (5)5 reviewing the literature pertinent to the study has been published.

Taboca Mining is one of the largest producers of tin in the world. In its pilot plant, significant amounts of a middling of 90% xenotime (YPO4) and 10% zircon (ZrSi04) are produced. Until now, these minerals of this ore body could not be separated successfully. This paper presents some aspects of the fundamentals of xenotime and zircon flotation with anionic (fatty acids) and cationic (amine acetate) collector, as well as the influence of the superficial leaching of the minerals with cold HCI and HNO3 on the floatability. The mineralogical studies showed that both minerals are optically liberated in -212+106 µm size fraction. Surprisingly, SEM analysis indicated that both xenotime and zircon contain very small inclusions (1-5 µm) of thorite (ThSiO4). On the other hand, zircon is fairly metamictizated giving rise to malacon. Zeta potential tests showed that the isoelectric points of xenotime and zircon correspond to a pH value of 4.5 and 4.7, respectively.The pretreatment with HCI and HNO3 displaced the isoeletric point (IEP) of the minerals to the left. The microflotation tests indicated that the floatability of both untreated and treated minerals are quite similar in the presence of the collectors studied in this work. Adsorption mechanisms are also suggested.

A theoretical calculation of the electro-osmotic circulation of liquid in a rectangular micro-electro-phoresis cell was presented by Smoluchowski (1921) and Komagata (1933). According to their theories, the velocity of liquid changes with depth such that the velocity distribution may be represented by a symmetrical parabola in the cell. Their theories appear contrary to the results of our experiments which show that the velocity distribution curve is represented by a symmetrical parabola whose symmetrical axis is displaced from the center line of the cell. A similar phenomenon had been suggested by Lane and White in 1937 based on the latter's theory which seemingly was incomplete. By using methods of measuring electrophoretic velocities based on the above three theories, serious errors are obvious. We are thus proposing a unified theory for determining the electrophoretic velocity of mineral particles in a rectangular cell. The equations of Smoluchowski, Komagata and White can be derived from our theory as special cases. On the basis of our theory, we are proposing an improved method of determining the precise electrophoretic velocity of mineral particles based solely on the coefficients of the velocity distribution curve. In our experiments, this method gives satisfactory results. We determined the relation between the zeta-potential and pH value of suspension for several minerals.

The thiosulfate lixiviant system for leaching of gold has been under extensive investigation for nearly two decades and consists of ammonium thiosulfate, copper and ammonia. There are several challenges with this system. The occurrence of ammonia must be taken into account from a health and hygiene aspect in the workplace, and also from an environmental perspective with significant levels of ammonia and copper in the tailings. Copper accelerates the leaching rate but causes excessive thiosulfate degradation. A new lixiviant system that has been investigated consists only of sodium thiosulfate without copper and ammonia. Gold leaching is carried out in an enclosed reactor with slightly elevated oxygen overpressure and temperature. Extensive leaching experiments were carried out to minimize thiosulfate degradation and polythionate formation while maximizing the gold extraction. For the preg-robbing carbonaceous ore sample tested, gold leaching was essentially complete within six hours and the thiosulfate consumption was lower than in the typical ammoniacal thiosulfate system. The gold thiosulfate complex in the pregnant leach solution was found to be quite stable under ambient conditions. This new leaching system has the advantages of being more environmentally friendly, has a shorter residence time, lower thiosulfate consumption, lower oxygen consumption, and is easier to control.

Economical remediation of acid rock drainage (ARD) at secluded high-altitude western ore mines is difficult given the current treatment technology. Several passive-engineered systems that are based on wetland technology were tested in the laboratory with three western ore mine ARDs (Co, Cu and Fe mines) and with a copper leachate effluent. These systems used well-weathered lodgepole pine sawdust as the sole carbon source and mud from a pond at one of the mine sites as the source of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Simple one-pass flow-through systems removed 44% to 99% of the vari¬ous heavy metals front the Co and Cu mine ARDs and increased the pH from 3 to 7 after 28 days of SRB acclimation with a five-day residence time. Carbohydrate utilization rates were generally low, except for one 437-day run, which consumed 25%, 30% and 21 % of the cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, respectively. Initial pH, amounts of toxic heavy metals and the degree of predegradation of the sawdust were found to significantly affect both remediation potential and acclimation time. Engineered SRB systems, alone or in combination with other passive technologies, offer promise for the economical remediation of western US ore mine ARDs.
