THE solid solutions which aluminum forms with copper, and with magnesium and silicon, are not extensive, and accordingly could not be expected to form Widmanstätten figures profusely nor with great ease. A study of the Widmanstätten figures in these systems seemed desirable, however, because of the interest which these alloys bear towards age-hardening theories resulting from the necessary relationship between the age-hardening phenomena and the atomic processes leading to the formation of Widmanstätten figures.1 ALLOYS OF ALUMINUM WITH COPPER The most accurate determination f the solid solubility, of copper in aluminum seems to be that by Dix and Richardson,2 whose results are represented in Fig. 1. According to this work, aluminum dissolves 5.6 weight per cent of copper at 548°, and less than one per cent at room temperature. Judging from the constitutional diagram, this solid solution on cooling tends to precipitate the compound CuAl2, and this conclusion has been confirmed experimentally by Schmid and Wassermann .3

During design of a 550-foot rectangular shaft in alluvium, lateral support within the excavation was an anticipated construction problem. Actual experience showed that the nearly 9 x 14 foot excavation required no lateral support. A strain measurement program con- current with construction and for a 9-month period following completion of the shaft detected only minor strains. Shaft design included consideration of available geological information. Site exploration included a 754-foot drill hole, cored at selected intervals, and a suite of geophysical well logs. Generalized physical properties of the alluvium were developed from laboratory core testing. An elasto-plastic, finite element computer program (DAHLKE) developed by the Spokane Mining Research Center U.S. Bureau of Mines, has been recently used to analyze the behavior of the alluvium around the shaft. Analysis showed that yielding first develops in the shaft corners and progressively expands into the wall zones around the shaft as loading increases. Gradual growth of a plastic zone progressed outward from the excavation boundary at increasing loads but had limited extent and was surrounded at all stress levels by an infinite elastic zone. This design review, aided by computer analysis, confirmed that the shaft would have been considered theoretically stable as designed.

Restoration of bauxite mining areas constitutes a difficult issue to address due to the destruction of the vegetation and soil decay of the excavated area. In this study woody species growth, in relation to altitude, heavy metal concentrations and mechanical texture of the underlying mining waste, were investigated. The research was implemented on restored sites of a bauxite mine in the Fokida Prefecture of Greece. These sites were located in three different elevations and the restoration took place in two phases, in 2001 and 1996. Heavy metals measurements showed some correlation among the different metals, whereas their concentration was also associated with plant growth parameters.

Longwall mine layouts with their entries, chain pillars, face support systems, advancing mining faces and compacting gobs represent a geomechanically complex mining operation. Geomechanical aspects are further complicated if mining occurs at depths exceeding 350 m, as stresses induced adjacent to the excavations exceed the unconfined strength of the coal and result in fracturing of the sidewalls of entries and chain pillars during development. Traditional methods of geomechanical analysis, whether empirical or numerical, are unable to represent such behavior satisfactorily. Achieving some meaningful results requires explicit representation of the three-dimensional boundary conditions and implementation of appropriate constitutive models for the rock mass. This paper describes a numerical modeling methodology for deep longwall mines operation using the FLAC3D finite difference de, which incorporates a strain softening constitutive law for modeling failure of coal. An important aspect of the modeling method includes accounting for stress relief provided to the pillars and entries due to the increasing load applied to the compacting gob.

From "Knots and Lashings," of Oct. 10, 1918, the military publication of Canadian Engineers' Training Depot, St. Johns, Que. During the early hours of Sunday morning last (the 6th inst.) there passed from our midst one of the most affable and estimable officers who, during our brief connection with the Depob, it has been our fortune to meet. Sidney A. Lang was born in Ontario in the year 1884 and lived in Toronto for a number of years. He ahtended Toronto University, where he displayed remarkable ability, and after graduating followed the profession of mining engineer. Being young and endowed with the spirit of adventure, he followed his profession in the mines of Chile and Peru; he could speak Spanish fluently. Always a reserved man, of refined tastes, it was difficult to induce him to relate some of his adventures in those countries so shrouded in mystery and romance. He joined the Canadian Engineers in Toronto as a sapper and shortly after came to this Depot.

Caissons hand dug to a depth of about 100 feet were used to underpin three important structures at an industrial site in the State of Utah. The caisson shafts extended through 30 to 40 feet of coarse, granular soils and 25 to 60 feet of sands and clays to bear on a very dense, coarse gravel and cobble stratum near the water table. The shafts were belled to 12 feet square at their bearing elevation. Bearing pressures of 20 ksf were assigned. The shafts were lagged with timber. The use of hand-dug caissons allowed continuous operation of the facility during underpinning. Settlements after underpinning have been minor and well within the estimated magnitudes. Instrumentation was placed in two of the caissons with varying degrees of success.

Secondary recrystallization to the (110) [001] texture in high-purity silicon iron occurs if low-oxygen material is annealed in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. Any departure from these conditions results in a growth of (100) oriented grains. The nature of the matrix and secondary recrystallization structures and textures and the nature of grain boundary interactions during growth show that the low gas-metal interfacial energy of the (110) surfaces provides the driving force for growth of these grains. A type of grain growth, characterized by a driving force which derives from energy differences of {hkl} surfaces at the gas-metal interface, has been treated in recent papers.&apos;-7 Secondary recrystallization to the cube text!:: in high-purity silicon iron provides one example. The present paper also deals with a surface energy driving force but the texture that results by secondary recrystallization is not the cube texture; it is a texture in which the (110) plane is in the plane of rolling and the [001] direction is in the direction of rolling. The phenomenon described in this paper is different from the impurity (dispersed phase)-controlled secondary recrystallization process in which the (110) [001] oriented grains grow under the action of grain boundary driving forces.8-12 It is also different from tertiary recrystallization,2 which also produces the (110) [001] texture in high-purity silicon iron, since the matrix textures and grain sizes are different. Finally, it is unlike any other form of secondary recrystallization reported in the literature. The possibility of obtaining the (110) [001] texture in high-purity silicon iron became clear in a study of the effect of impurity atoms on the energy relationships of (100) and (110) surfaces. In this study Walter and Dunn6 observed the migration of (100)/(110) boundaries, i.e., boundaries between two grains, one of which has a (100) plane and the other a (110) plane, respectively, parallel to the plane of the sheet specimen. At 1200°C the (100)/(110) boundaries advanced into (100) grains in a vacuum anneal, then reversed their direction and migrated into (110) grains in a subsequent anneal in impure argon. Finally, the direction of migration reversed once again with (110) grains growing into (100) grains in a second vacuum anneal. These results were explained in terms of a change in concentration of oxygen atoms at the gas-metal interface during the anneals. Thus, oxygen atoms were added to the surface during the anneals in impure argon to the point where ?100, the specific surface energy of the (100) oriented grains, was lower than ?110, the surface energy of (110) oriented grains. In vacuum, however, the oxygen concentration at the surface was lowered to the point where ?110 < ?100. Concerning the possibility of secondary recrystallization in high-purity silicon iron with a low initial oxygen concentration, the observed effect of adsorbed oxygen atoms has indicated6 that a good vacuum anneal would favor the rapid growth of matrix grains with the (110) plane in the plane of the sheet much more than grains in the (100) orientation. The growth of only (110) oriented grains of course would depend upon y110 being less than ?hkl, where hkl refers to any plane different from (110). The present paper is concerned with the application of the above ideas to secondary recrystallization to the (110) [001] texture in high-purity silicon iron. The matrix and secondary recrystallization textures and structures are defined and discussed. Observations of growth of nuclei for secondary recrystallization and of boundary interactions are included to provide direct information on the surface energy relationships between (110) and other (hkl) surfaces. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE As before, 2,4-6 high-purity iron and silicon were melted and cast in vacuum to provide an alloy containing 3 pct Si with less than 0.005 wt pct impurities. The oxygen content of the ingot was lower than in previous ingots, being approximately 3 ppm (by weight). The carbon content of this ingot may have been slightly higher than was found for previous ingots. The same rolling and annealing schedule used previously2 was followed in this study to obtain samples 0.012 in. (0.3 mm) thick. These samples were electropolished prior to annealing. After rolling and polishing, the oxygen content of the material was approximately 6 ppm; material used in the previous studies contained about twice this amount of oxygen.

It is well understood that to develop wagon wheels with higher abrasion resistance, fracture toughness, and fatigue resistance, steels with lower amounts of inclusions need to be used. Clean steels are produced with technologies that minimize the amount of inclusions in the microstructure. The demand for cleaner steels is high, and lowering of non-metallic oxide inclusions and controlling their morphology, composition, and size distribution is vital. Reduction of residual impurity elements such as sulphur, phosphorus, hydrogen, nitrogen, and trace elements is essential in the production of cleaner steel. Material cleanliness is vital for fatigue endurance, since oxide inclusions may act as stress concentrators and initiation points for fatigue cracks. To better understand the relationship between the cleanliness and toughness of the 34-inch cast wagon wheels, two samples of different levels of cleanliness were supplied for investigation. This paper presents the results of metallurgical analysis using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and mechanical tests for the pearlitic high-performance cast rail wagon wheel (identified as Class B) that are currently being used. The Charpy V-notch impact test results for the three samples from wagon wheels were compared. With the aid of SEM/EDS analysis system, non-metallic inclusions in these steels were detected, and it was possible to determine the position, size, shape, and composition of each particle. Alumina and manganese sulphide inclusions could be identified as the dominant inclusion types in the investigated samples. Fracture surface analysis of the Charpy specimen with high inclusions indicated that transgranular cleavage was the predominant fracture mode. Fractography of fracture surfaces of Charpy impact test samples also showed improvement of toughness properties on the clean sample.

The European Commission published its Communication of the Thematic Strategy on the sustainable use of natural resources ("Resource Strategy") on 21 December 2005. The Resource Strategy aims at reducing environmental impacts associated with resource use - called decoupling - in a growing European economy and worldwide. The impacts of unsustainable resource use include e.g. climate change due to fossil fuel use, land use and environmental degradation due to mineral extraction and processing, or overexploitation of soil and fish stocks. To decouple environmental impacts from economic growth, a life-cycle approach is adopted. It means that the environmental impacts are taking into account at each stage of the life cycle of a resource, avoiding that negative impacts are shifted to other environmental media, to other stages of the life cycle, or to other countries. Key to achieving decoupling are three factors: - More value - creating more value while using fewer resources (?resource productivity?); - Less impact - reducing overall environmental impact per unit of resources used (through ?cleaner? technologies and consumption pat-terns); - Better alternatives - substituting currently used resources with better alternatives. The paper focuses on the implementation actions of the Resource Strategy in particular related to the minerals industry: 1. The Data Centre on natural resources; 2. Indicators to measure progress; 3. The involvement of economic sectors to take concrete actions; 4. EU Member States involvement, focusing on resource uses with the most significant impacts; 5. The International Panel on the sustainable use of natural resources, set up together with UNEP. With its 25 years time horizon and its wide approach the Resource Strategy will have a co-ordinating function to ensure enhanced coherence and efficiency. The challenge will be to integrate this approach into all policies and decision-making.

This paper presents an overview of laboratory and field tests on approximately 250 fully grouted roof bolts instrumented with strain gauges in order to study loading behavior. Laboratory work included pull tests, time-dependent tests, and shear tests. The field tests were conducted in 14 different mines extracting different commodities. However, because of the focus of this publication, only the results of tests in 9 coal mines are reported here. In the field tests, all but 14 bolts were loaded by rock movement; these 14 bolts were tested using pull gear. The variables studied included anchorage length, mechanical interlock, time-dependent behavior, shear, installation load, loading rate, and maximum load level. Such information will improve the understanding of the behavior of resin-grouted bolts, which in return will enhance the safety of miners by reducing the occurrence of rock falls. The influences of geology, overburden depth, entry width, mining-induced stresses, and bolt spacing are not described.

A new approach to an old problem has made it possible to do in a a tively short period what has not been accomplished in the past three quarters of a century using strictly experimental methods. A theoretical study was made of the underlying principles whereby a jet is formed by a shaped charge and of the mechanism of the penetration of the target by that jet. It was found that there are more than 10, and perhaps as many as 15 variables affectin!? the performance of the shaped charge. Only a few calculations are necessary to show that it is physically impossible to investigate all of these variables experimentally. The shaped charge theory has been extended to include a previously little-understood mechanism in high explosive phenomena; namely, low order detonation. By superimposing a high order detonation on a zone already undergoing low order detonation, all appreciable improvement in performance is accomplished. The development of a design wherehy these phenomena are coordinated in such a way as to develop a jet which is tailored to meet the specific target requirement will be described in detail. The shortcomings or even impossibility of strictly experimental techniques will be illustrated by a discussion of the development of a special-purpose explosive charge. INTRODUCTION In an article appearing in the May, 1888 issue of Scribner&apos;s Magazine, Charles E. Monroe described his early experiments with gun cotton (Fig. 1) which led to his name being most fre-quently connected with our present-day shaped charge. Although the sunken letters or "cavities" in Mon- roe&apos;s gun cotton were not lined, they produced some penetration of an iron plate. The credit for the lined shaped charge, however, should rightfully go to Dr. R. W. Wood of the Physics Dept. of Johns Hopkins University, who was responsible for first discovering the fact that a metal liner in a cavity of explosive gave high velocity fragments and/or jets of metal. This discovery was made by Dr. Wood inadvertently while investigating an accidental death resulting from an electric blasting cap. Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative longwall tailgate roof support and have grown in usage during the past few years. Heintzmann Corporation has been installing pumpable roof supports at the RAG Resources Emerald Mine in western PA since 1998, where they have provided effective roof control in their longwall tailgates. Despite the success of these supports in this application, questions remain regarding critical design issues for optimizing the use of this support technology. The support loading profile is characterized by a high initial stiffness with peak loading occurring at less than one inch of convergence, followed by significant load shedding with a post failure capacity comparable to that of wood cribbing. Therefore, the key to optimizing the support utilization is to provide sufficient load density to prevent convergence from occurring beyond the peak loading capacity. This requires an understanding of how the supports interact with the ground conditions, hence measurement of the ground reaction curve. In order to obtain this information, pumpable roof supports were instrumented to measure support loading. Roof deformation and roof-to-floor convergence measurements in the vicinity of the instrumented supports were also made. The experimental parameters for the installation were the support spacing and water¬to-solids ratio of the grout, which controls the grout strength and ultimately the maximum capacity of the support. The study clearly shows that at this mine a 24-inch diameter support is fully capable of providing adequate ground control under depths of cover of 750 ft as only 50 pct of the available support capacity was utilized outby the longwall face. It was also shown that the 2.00 to 1 water¬solids ratio, despite providing a slightly softer support response, is sufficient for maintaining the same degree of roof control provided by the traditional 1.75 to 1 grout mix. The 10-ft spacing of the supports did not cause any ground control problems outby the face. However, inby the face the performance of the support is degraded once the peak capacity of the supports is exceeded. It appears that the large load shedding behavior, which is characteristic of this support following peak loading, allows the immediate roof to separate. When this happens, the support is unable to regain control of the roof in time to prevent failure of the immediate roof beam.

The amounts of oxygen in liquid iron-titanium alloys up to 50 pct Ti were measured and the oxide phases in equilibrium with these alloys were determined by using TiO² crucibles. A minimum of about 0.003 pct 0 occurs at less than 1 pct Ti. The various liquid and solid oxide phases can be arranged on a ternary isotherm. THREE characteristics of titanium contribute to the interesting aspects of its reaction with oxygen in liquid iron: 1—It forms a number of stable oxides. 2—All oxides have large negative free energies of formation. 3—The pure metal exhibits high solubility for oxygen. In addition, the use of titanium as a stabilizing and strengthening element in alloys suggests a need for investigation of its reactions in amounts greater than those normally required for deoxidation. These higher compositions are also of interest because they occur during the addition of ferroalloys and produce deoxidation products before dilution is achieved. Titanium Deoxidation in the Literature While the use of titanium as an alloying element and deoxidizer has been common for several decades, the first detailed study of its deoxidizing characteristics was carried out by Wentrup and Hieber&apos; in 1939. These authors determined the extent of deoxidation possible with titanium and identified, by microscopic examination, the products formed. They found that titanium in excess of 0.2 pct did not reduce the oxygen content of iron below 0.004 pct at 1600°C. They identified the spinel FeO-TiO² at low titanium concentrations and Ti2O³ in melts containing more than 0.2 pct Ti. A portion of the area surveyed by Wentrup and Hieber has been investigated recently by Evans and Sloman² using X-ray diffraction for inclusion identification. They concurred in general with the findings of Wentrup and Hieber, but reported the existence of Ti³O5 as a deoxidation product in the range near 0.1 pct Ti. Comstock, Urban, and Cohen³ discussed the deoxidation of iron with titanium, correlating the data of Wentrup and Hieber with free-energy data for the titanium oxides. Scatter at high titanium values was considered attributable either to the formation of an oxide exhibiting high solubility in liquid iron or to the entrainment of solid oxide particles leading to high apparent solubility. Chipman&apos; has calculated the deoxidation curves for titanium based on free-energy data for titanium oxides. These calculations (Fig. 1) and those of Comstock, Urban, and Cohen involve assumptions as to the activity coefficients of oxygen and titanium in liquid iron, since such data have not been determined. Investigation of the deoxidizing characteristics of chromium" and vanadium0 have shown that these elements decrease the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid iron, leading to a tendency toward relatively high oxygen values and experimental scatter in highly alloyed melts. Experimental This investigation involved two major objectives: 1—determination of the composition of the oxide phases in equilibrium with liquid Fe-Ti alloys, and 2—establishing the pattern of oxygen solubility in liquid Fe-Ti alloys at titanium concentrations in excess of that required for attainment of minimum oxygen content. Author has exhaustively researched into soft ground through construction of a large open caisson on soft ground (muck) which weighs more than 4, 000 tons. To avoid any contingency during construction, we precompressed muck stratum with a sand cushion and consolidated it with sand piles before construction of the caisson. We made borehole surveyings and soil tests many times before and after ground treatment. Following the tracks of changes of the caisson at all stages of precasting, we surveyed a large number of data. On the basis of analysis of the data we changed the original construction plan of precasting in four stages and sinking in three stages into that of precasting in three stages and sinking in one stage. Through the practice of the whole caisson construction the author has advanced new theory of kinematic law for soil particles and the change&apos;s law for strength of muck during precompression of sand cushion and consolidation of sand piles.

Consent to develop and operate a new coal mine in New South Wales (NSW) will be conditional upon a number of environmental controls. In NSW, applications for any new major development associated with coal mining are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment. The environ- mental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals, and licences under the pollution control legislation amount to a substantial component of any new project&apos;s commissioning considerations. The nature, scale and location of projects and the principles of pollution control on which conditions of State Pollution Control Commission (SPCC) approvals are based have a considerable influence on project planning. The design, construction and operation of coal mines in NSW has been progressively modified over the past 15 years, to incorporate increasingly stringent requirements for environmental management. These requirements are in turn, a reflection of a greater community demand for environmental protection.

At the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper-Smelting,"&apos; in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, FeS. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu,S, 90.4, and FcS, 9.6 per cent. (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and FeS, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent. of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent. of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that five of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the ferrous sulphide-cuprous sulphide series, and to see how the constitution could be further revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, " The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron-Bottoms." The raw material which formed the basis of the research was a matte containing Fe, 61.68, and Cu, 11.20

Ferromanganese crusts have traditionally been considered a potential ore for Co, whereas ferromanganese nodules have typically been considered a potential ore for Ni and Cu. However, both nodules and crusts sequester high concentrations of many metals (Table 1) from sediment pore waters and seawater, many of which are essential for high-tech applications. The resource potential of these rare and valuable metals is poorly known and they are the subject of considerable current research. The need for adequate and dependable supplies of these metals is essential for the development of new technologies. The rare-earth elements have recently received much attention in the scientific and popular press because of their use in so many high-tech applications and because more than 95% of the production comes from China (e.g., Service 2010); consequently, there is concern about the possibility of a significant decrease or even curtailment in exports from China. The lack of a primary source and the inadequate supply of Te have prohibited the development of a Cd-Te photovoltaic solar-cell industry (Hein et al. 2010). Inadequate supplies of many of the elements listed in Table 1 are limiting the development of key high-tech industries, forcing the use of alternative metals that [ ] may result in less efficiency or less favorable properties for a product. The rare-earth elements, Te, and other elements listed in Table 1 occur in high abundances in marine hydrogenetic and diagenetic ferromanganese deposits. Here, we look at the mechanisms by which these rare and valuable metals are incorporated into different genetic types of marine ferromanganese deposits.

Underground testing was carried out by Ingersoll-Rand, Inc., under contract to the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of a machine-mounted scrubber system for ventilating the face during an extended advance. A continuous miner equipped with an integral flooded-bed dust scrubber system was instrumented with methanometers and Real-time Aerosol Monitor (RAM) dust monitors. Methane and respirable dust data were collected at brattice setbacks of 7.5 m (current operating distance), 10.5 m, and 15 m (blowing ventilation) during production shifts. Results showed that a suitable machine-mounted scrubber system can adequately ventilate the face at brattice setbacks up to 15 m. No deterioration in ventilation performance was observed as brattice setbacks were increased from 7.5 m to 15 m.
