Vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) is the refining process used by ALZ (Genk, Belgium) for their production of stainless steels. The process consists of three stages: oxygen blowing at a pressure of 100 mbar, degassing, and reduction of the slag with ferrosilicon at 5 mbar. The magnesia-chromite bricks used in the slag zone of the ladles suffer from acute wear. In this paper results obtained from a program to improve the refractory life span are presented. The dominant wear phenomena were identified with an electron microscopy study of bricks taken from different locations in the ladle. Concurrently a dynamic model for the vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) refining process was developed. The model calculates the elementsÆ oxidation rate during the blowing oxygen stage and allows the continuous calculation of the change of the metal, slag and gas composition throughout the VOD process. From these activities a general scheme of the refractory wear was worked out and measures to improve the refractory life were proposed and implemented.

Petroleum requirements since V-J day have been appreciably higher than predicted. Foreign operations now exceed maximum wartime levels by about 14 per cent. Domestic operations since V-J day have averaged 92 Per cent of the wartime peak. In spite of maximum foreign refinery runs, large exports of all products, except residual fuel oil, are necessary to meet foreign demand. During the next few years it is expected that foreign operations will continue at capacity, including new installations, but that, because of increases in foreign demand, exports will continue at about their present level. Domestic operations will increase during this period and crude production probably will exceed maximum efficient rates. Even after 10 years some exports probably will be required, but eventually these will be supplanted by increased output of foreign refineries, except for small tributary exports. The increase in domestic requirements will exceed the decline in exports. Unless findings of crude oil exceed present expectations, the increasing demand will be met by increased imports and synthetic methods-—such as the Hydrocarbon Synthesis Process for conversion of natural gas and coal to gasoline and distillates. Catalytic cracking installations will increase as crude availability decreases. This will help to meet the increasing demand for gasoline but will intensify the domestic shortage of residual fuel oil. Eventually larger imports will be required to satisfy the demand for this product. Perhaps the general expectation was that a rather pronounced decline in the level of industry petroleum operations would take place shortly after the end of the war, with the impact felt mainly on the economy of the United States- It is of interest now, nine months after V-J day, to take inventory of the near-term situation and see what significant forces are at work. With this as a starting point, it should be possible to engage in something more satisfactory than pure speculation concerning trends in the immediate future and 10 to 20 years ahead. The use of two-dimensional shape parameters to characterize abrasive particles is a possible approach to express their angularity. Nonetheless, in sliding abrasion, especially in pin abrasion testing, coated papers structure plays an important role and even its damage during the wear process should not be neglected. This manuscript discuss the limitations of two-dimensional shape descriptors in distinguishing wear caused by relatively hard particles, indicating that the wear data obtained in sliding abrasion tests are unable to distinguish different types of coated papers used when only the two-dimensional particle projection is considered for shape characterization.

Production and Value In order that the figures of Table 1 may have any weight, a statement must be made to show how they were arrived at. Because, to the writer's knowledge, no accurate separate figures ever have been kept of the production and value of the Pittsburgh coal bed, the states will be considered separately. Pennsylvania Accurate figures are obtainable for Pennsylvania for recent years because recent reports of the Pellnsylvania Department of Mines show the production from each mine and the bed worked at each mine. For recent years, therefore, it is only necessary to list the mines working in the Pittsburgh bed and add up their production. The value was obtained by treating each county separately, applying the average price for the county to the production of Pittsburgh coal in that county. Interest in metal-hydrogen systems can be manifold. Small amounts of hydrogen adsorbed by elemental metals and alloys usually result in strong changes in the physical and mechanical properties of engineering materials. Overwhelmingly, these changes, viz. hydrogen embrittlement, are considered deleterious with respect to structural performance of engineering materials. However, the changes, often studied by metallurgists and metal physicists, can present new possibilities and applications. A prominent example is the recent interest in safe, solid-state hydrogen storage in metallic lattices. In a new laboratory in MTL, Ottawa, a study has been initiated to investigate the effect of "micro- and macro- alloying" of Al and Mg powders with hydrogen (in high-energy mechanical alloying mills) on plastic deformation in metal and metal hydride structures. It is anticipated that high-rate impacting and subsequent grain refinement in the mill will have an effect on hydrogen storage capacity in lightweight magnesium and aluminum alloys. First examination of the state-of-stress by X-ray diffraction in high-rate milled, nanostructured pure aluminum, aluminum milled with a solid surfactant, and aluminum or magnesium alloy milled with hydride and/or gas hydrogen will be presented.

A number of small scale fragmentation tests have been conducted to analyze the effects of blasting effort on the grindability of granite, granodiorite, limestone and iron ore. Powder factors were modified, post-blast fragments were screened and drop weight tests were conducted on fragments of different sizes to deliver a variety of specific impact energies. The fragmentation from the drop weight tests has been analyzed to examine the effect of impact energy and powder factor on size reduction. A consistent effect of blasting on the various fractions of the fragmentation distribution has been obtained for all rocks used. The effect of powder factor on the impact fracturing of the rocks has been expressed in a convenient relationship between progeny size, impact energy and powder factor used in obtaining the primary fragmentation. It is clear that explosives consumption affects downstream size reduction; depending on the rock, the effect can be substantial at coarser final sizes but very small in the case of grinding to small final sizes. Differences from the expected trend can be attributed to changes in blast design. As an example, the effect of in-hole collision of detonation waves is analyzed.

Overcore measurements at the North Fork Valley (NFV) coal mines in western Colorado have shown that horizontal stresses are highly anisotropic. Measurements have been made in four mines at various depths. In many measurements, the maximum horizontal stress is three to four times higher than the minor horizontal stress. At the West Elk Mine, maximum and minimum horizontal stresses of 24 MPa and 6 MPa, respectively, have been measured at depths of 640 meters (m). Under highly anisotropic stress conditions, ground control problems associated with both high and low horizontal stresses can develop. While high horizontal stresses can produce cutter failures and floor heave, low horizontal stresses can allow block fallouts. This paper summarizes the horizontal stress measurements in NFV mines and, in particular, in the West Elk Mine where their role in roof fall and floor heave failures is discussed. This experience has led to an improved use of ground support and safer mining operations at depths of 640 to 700 m.

The value of mineral production increased 6.2% in 1976. With the exception of coal, practically all commodities registered an increase in production and value; most had an increase in unit value. Total value exceeded $1 billion for the first time. The increase in nearly all nonmetallic mineral production was a complete reversal of the 1975 experience. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble and was second in bauxite and scrap mica, third in oystershell, third in kaolin, and fifth in dimension limes-tone and dimension marble. International Trade.-The international trade passing through the Mobile customs district was valued at $2,524 minion in fiscal year 1976, up 20% from that of the previous year. Of the total value of trade passing through the district, 52% of the value of experts and 89% of the value of imports were handled through the port at Mobile. The major export Commodity was coal through McDuffie Coal Terminal which amounted to nearly 2.9 million tons, up from 2.4 million tons in 1975. Since 1969, a substantial number of geophysical methods have been applied in the search for porphyry copper and mesothermal type -sulpha-de deposits. These have assisted with geological mapping as well as the definition of various sulphide depos-its. The application of these methods at the Frieda-Nena deposits, Papua New Guinea, can be used as a case study for exploration in other parts of New Guinea.In 1993, Highlands Gold Limited carried out an intensive geophysical program over the Nena deposit. The methods employed included, CSAMT (controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics), airborne and ground elect-romagnetics, IP/resistivity and ground magnetics. The magnetic method was used as a regional mapping tool as well as a way of mapping alteration zones over both the Nena and Frieda River copper deposits. Electromagnetics, in part-icular FLAIRTEM, is a rapid reconn-aissance tool as well as a detailed mapping tool for the location of Nena-style massive sulphide deposits. IP/ resistivity is an expensive but most useful tool for mapping out Frieda porphyry copper style disseminated sulphides as well as Nena style deposits. The Bagdad mill, located near Bagdad, AZ, was built in 1977 with a designed mill capacity of 36.3 kt/d (40,000 stpd). An autogenous mill-ball mill crusher (ABC) grinding circuit was chosen. The original mill contained three independent grinding circuits. Each contained one 9.75m-diam x 4-m-long (32-ft-diam x 13-ft-long) fixed-speed autogenous mill, a4.7-m-diam x 6.7-m- long (15.5ft-diam x 22-ft-long) ball mill and one 2. 1-m-diam (7-ft-diam) short head cone crusher. Total installed power per grinding circuit was about 8.4 MW (11,350 hp), with 5.9 MW (8000 hp) in the autogenous mill, 2.2 MW (3000 hp) in the ball mill and 261 kW (350 hp) in the crusher (Fig. 1). The autogenous mills were designed to be able to operate semi-autogenously. However, they were never converted to semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills. As a result of this design, only about 4.1 MW (5450 hp) of the designed power is used in the autogenous mills. The grinding circuits are closed, with 2.4 x 6 m (8 x 20 ft) double-deck vibrating screens. A series of conveyors re- turn screen oversize underneath the mill coarse ore stockpile to feed the crushers. Variable speed belts feed the crushers and control power draw. Crusher product reports directly to the tail end of the autogenous mill feed belt (Fig. 2). A magnetic sensor detects tramp iron in the autogenous mill-crusher circuit.

Flyrock can be a serious hazard associated with blasting. Many surface blasting accidents involving injury result from excessive flyrock beyond the protected blast zone. Numerous cases of equipment damage at the mine, quarry or construction site have resulted from flyrock. Fragments propelled beyond the property limits of the operation have also caused injury and damage.

Although the evaluation of autoclave oxidation for Getchell ore was begun nearly 40 years ago, its ultimate implementation in 1989 represents the first substantial improvement in the economics of processing this refractory ore. Sulfide ores at Getchell were previously roasted prior to leaching (in the 30's and 60's), resulting in somewhat lower recoveries than are currently realized by autoclave oxidation. Recoveries on the order of 90% are expected from the high-arsenic sulfide ore over the expected 10-year mine life.

Severe whipping of shuttle car trailing cables occurs when the car stops suddenly or reverses direction. This causes cable damage, and can seriously injure personnel near the cable. FMC has contracted with the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design, build and demonstrate a reel control system that will significantly reduce or eliminate whipping. II. CONCLUSIONS Results of engineering effort show that the following conditions are primarily responsible for the whipping problem. Causes may exist individually, or in combination.

The operations of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. involve the preliminary roasting of zinc concentrate from Broken Hill, New South wales, at a number of acid-making centers on the Australian mainland. The partially roasted material is shipped to the Tasmanian plant where it was formerly re-roasted prior to leaching,' but this practice was gradually abandoned in favor of the flotation of leach residue for the recovery of a concentrate containing about 22 pct sulphide sulphur and known as secontlary or Risdon concentrate.2 This change, together with increased zinc production, called for new furnaces at Risdon for the roasting of 10-50 tonst of secondary concentrcite and 90 tons of new concentrate per day. The war situation made it imperative that construction be commenced without delay and to save time it was decided to base the design on that of Skinner type furnaces which had been built in South Australia twenty years earlier. This involved some sacrifice of desirable features but did not prevent the incorporation of provisions which had enabled small Herreshoff type furnaces to roast secondary concentrate autogenously. The roasting rate in existing furnaces was 10-12 Ib sulphide sulphur per sq ft of hearth area per day, and eleven hearths, 20 ft in diam, were provided in the two new furnaces in anticipation that they would prove capable of the autogenous roasting of 130-140 tons of concentrate per day from 28-29 pct sulphur down to 4.5-5 pct, with an oxidation rate of 11-11.5 lh S/S per sq ft of hearth area per day. It was soon realized, when the first of the furnaces went into operation, that a much better performance than this might be given, and the purpose of this paper is to show how a treatment rate of 100 tons per furnace day, and oxidation rates approaching 15 lb S/S per sq ft per day have been reached. It is unnecessary to repeat here the contents of many valuable contributions to this subject which have appeared in the Dansactions and in the publications of the U. S. Geological Survey. As a basis for the further suggestions of this paper, the following are the most important: 1. The investigation of J. R. Don,' showing the gold of certain Australasian veins to have been deposited by ascending solutions, and not by lateral secretion. 2. The theory of Prof. Posepny? distinguishing the vadose from the deep circulation, and ascribing the origin of certain classes of ore-deposits to ascending solutions of the latter class. 3. The theory of Prof. Van Hise,3 as to the underground circulation and the primary enrichment of veins thereby. 4. The paper of Prof. J. F. Kemp,4 showing that ore-deposits are largely the products of " expiring vulcanism." Many. of Prof. Kemp's ideas have been widely adopted by mining men. 5. The theory of secondary enrichment, so lucidly expounded by Mr. S. F. Emmons.V his theory, dealing with the rearrangement of ore-bodies after primary mineralization, has been generally adopted, and seems to me to have been as completely proved as the nature of the case permits. This paper describes the controlled blasting techniques required to mine a rock tunnel section of a main interceptor located in the Boston Metropolitan area. The 3m (10 ft) x 2.8m (9.25 ft) horseshoe shaped tunnel was driven 490m (1600 ft) by conventional drill and blast methods. The geology varied round by round and consisted of five highly faulted and jointed igneous rock types. The tunnel intersected numerous slickenslides and open mud seams which hampered both drilling and loading operations. Smooth blasting wee critical in order to keep overbreak tc a minimum in this extremely hard but blocky ground.

Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of seventeen and the standing committees held 45 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R4,608 compared with R2,124 last year. This deterioration can be attributed largely to two important factors, namely an increase in secretarial fees of RI, 789 and an increase in the loss on the Journal from R2,343 to R3,508. In addition, our contribution to the expenses of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers increased by R607 from R549 to R1,156. The increase in secretarial fees is partly due to our increased demand for services and partly to increased salaries. In order to maintain its essential services it has been necessary for the A.S. & T.S. to increase salaries in order to keep pace with commerce and industry. With regard to the Journal, we did not expect immediate dramatic results from the changes that were effected as from the beginning of last year in the arrangements for publication. However, the improvement has been even slower in materialising than we expected. This situation is being watched carefully and we will not hesitate to make further changes if necessary. It became clear early in the year that the financial position was deteriorating and your Council decided that it was essential to meet the situation by raising subscriptions and entrance fees. At the same time it was decided that there are no grounds for a distinction between Town and Country members and that in future the scale for the compounding of subscriptions should be based on anticipated future membership, rather than past membership. These changes have had only a minor effect on the accounts under consideration. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R132 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4,338. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures decreased during the year from R13,059 to R6,567, while accumulated funds now amount to R17,959 compared with R22,567 last year. It will also be noted that we are holding R25,844 on behalf of the Symposium on Opencast Mining.
