"The goal of prospecting operations in the Republic of Altay was to locate gold-sulfide-quartz mineralization. For this purpose we applied the technology of electromagnetic sounding and induced polarization (EMS-IP). These operations resulted in localizing promising sites with presence of sulfidization. The EMS-IP method proved to be highly efficient amongst other prospecting methods targeted at recognizing zones of sulfide mineralization making up 91%, considering that in more than half cases the ore intervals were the case. In the Yakutian diamondiferous province the EMS-IP technology was approbated during three field seasons to accomplish the assignments on searching for kimberlite bodies under conditions of various geological types. As a result, the reference objects were distinguished, and geoelectric parameters of kimberlite pipes of explosion were defined.INTRODUCTION In the time span 2015-2016 in Gorny Altay the EMS-IP technology was approbated in the Novokuznetsk area. The on-land areal geophysical survey was performed by EMS-IP method applied to identify, outline and locate promising sites with Au-Ag-bearing polymetallic mineralization within surveyed areas. Compared to the hosting rocks, the sulfides contained in polymetallic mineralization are typified by low specific electrical resistivity (SER) and high polarization. The areal survey conducted via EMS-IP method provided spatial characteristics of searched object. From July 2016 to August 2017 our expedition group carried out serial test works and laboratory investigations intending to define performance capabilities of EMS-IP technology in searching for kimberlite bodies under conditions of diverse geological types. The prerequisites for serial work were operations accomplished at the «Listvenichny» site lying 35 km away from Mirny town in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), where the EMS-IP technology was probed for locating position and measuring geoelectric parameters of tuff pipe «Buardakhsky». After successful completion of operations it was decided to evaluate geoelectric parameters of kimberlite pipes of explosion."

"The Kiruna Electric System is an all electric ramp haulage system developed for underground mining. This electric truck haulage system is currently operating on three continents. This paper will review the technology of the system, existing installations as well as the economical benefits to the mining industry. The system was designed and developed to extend and exploit the economical advantages of ramp haulage. Performance information is provided. IntroductionThe Kiruna Electric System has been the subject of a number of technical papers over the past sever al years. During that period, the content of the presentations has changed from concept and theory to prototype testing to description of installed and operating systems.The intent of this paper is threefold:1. to present a brief review of the technical features of the Kiruna Electric Systems;2. to review the existing installations with performance data; and3. to provide a description of on-going developments within the Kiruna Electric Program during 1991.The Kiruna Electric is a high capacity ramp haulage system for underground mining operations due to an All-Electric Drive System, including two heavy duty electric traction motors. Wastewater from nickel lateritic process still has valuable metals that could be recovered. Using an ion exchange to recovery these metals, the iron becomes a problem due to the fact that it precipitate at pH 2. The aim of this research was to make iron soluble by reducing Fe+3 to Fe+2. A synthetic solution was prepared with sulfate ferric. The reducing agent sodium dithionite was used and the potential was varied (initial potential: 700, 600, 500, 450 e 400 mV) using as a reference the Pourbaix diagram for iron created by HydroMedusa software. The pH was ranged between 0.5 and 2.5, the reducing agent’s concentration was 0.5 M and the reaction time ranged between 30 and 120 min at room temperature. The ferric iron and total iron concentration were verified using a spectrophotometer with 5-sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) to determine Fe(III) and ammonia to determine Fe(II) and Fe(III) in 500 and 425 nm, respectively. The results indicated that total reduction was at 400 mV in any pH between 0.5 and 2, but less than 40% in pH 2.5 at this potential value.

The prediction of rock properties from indirect testing methods is important, particularly for preliminary investigations since indirect tests are easier and cheaper than the direct tests. In this study, we investigate the predictability of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks from the indentation hardness index (IHI) obtained using point load apparatus. Forty-six different rock types, 14 of which were igneous, 15 were metamorphic, and 17 were sedimentary were tested in the laboratory. The UCS and BTS values were correlated with the corresponding IHI values and the results were statistically analysed. The influence of rock classes on the relationships was also investigated. A strong correlation between UCS and IHI was found for all data. The correlation between BTS and IHI is not as strong as the correlation between UCS and IHI, However, it is in the acceptable limits. When the regression analyses were repeated for igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the correlation coefficients were generally increased. The results show the UCS and BTS can be estimated from IHI, In addition, the effect of rock classes on the relationships between IHI and both UCS and BTS is important.

Good afternoon gentlemen. It is always a pleasure to talk about a subject dear to our hearts--the high speed transfer of bull; materials. Specifically, today we will be reviewing the engineering approach to an age old problem of ship loading and unloading. You may be puzzled by the title of this paper and we will attempt to explain this for you--particularly the use of the words "New Era", since high speed automated facilities are nothing new to the material handling engineer. The new era in material handling designs refers to an all out concerted effort to provide custom engineering tailored to specific operations and economic requirements of the client. It shuns hardware type of engineering wherein existing machines and devices are dusted off and reapplied. It provides automation when automation can be justified and it exemplifies the application of systems engineering to solve specific problems.

The investigation results are submitted on separation into layers in the systems Cu (Ni) - Fe - Ca - 0 - S - (Si), as well as on physico-chemical properties of oxide - ferrite, oxide-sulfide melts (density, surface tention, viscosity, electric conductivity), on kinetics and oxidation macromechanism of iron and sulfur in the oxide-silicate, oxide-ferrite and oxide-sulfide melts, kinetics of reduction of oxide-silicate and oxide-ferrite systems. Conditions are discussed for copper, nickel and zinc recovery from oxide-silicate and oxide-ferrite slag in liquid and solid states. Some promising technique is the technique of future, as is considered.

Canada's gypsum industry began more than 200 years ago in the Maritime provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's 10 provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.4 Mt (9.3 million st) of crude gypsum, and 17 processing plants manufactured 2.5 Mt (2.8 million st) of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production. However, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum pose a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

This paper describes the features of a computer cost model developed to estimate requirements and costs of individual coal mining projects. Detailed cost analysis procedures for both coal mining and preparation are incorporated into the model. This model has been developed over a period of seven years through funding provided by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The model follows a process engineering approach for the estimation of all project capital and operating costs. A discounted cash flow analysis procedure is also designed into the model to allow for the solution of cost/ton or cost/MMBtu of clean coal production. The model can be applied to most surface or underground mining deposits and can accommodate a wide variety of coal washing situations. This flexibility makes the model a particularly useful tool for preliminary project analysis, property screening, investment analysis, mining technology assessment, coal cleaning level assessment, and general property valuation.

This paper will discuss the construction of 15.9 km (9.88 mi) of tunnels on a project in Chicago, Illinois. The tunnels were driven utilizing two rock and four soft ground TBMs ranging in sizes from 7.39 m (24.25 ft) in rock down to 1.95 m (77 in) in soft ground. In addition to the mining, there are 63 upper level structures and 16 dropshafts averaging 61.5 m (202 ft) deep included on this project. Many diverse mining, excavation, support and lining techniques were employed on this project.

In proved reserves of vanadium-containing titanomagnetite in Panxi, China, iron grades of ores were 50% ~ 15%. China?s metallurgical industry departments defined the iron ores containing 50% ~ 20% TFe as exploitable resources and the extreme lean iron ores containing 20% ~ 15% TFe as temporary unexploitable resources, the extreme lean ores were as waste rejected into waste dump in mining process. This paper researched process mineralogy of the extreme lean ores, adopted mineral processing technology responded to the properties of the ores to treat the ores and obtained quality vanadium-iron concentrate, titanium concentrate and sulfur concentrate, therefore successfully utilized the extreme lean ores, changed the ores from waste resources to exploitable resources.

Laboratory and field data for wire ropes typical of constructions used in underground mine hoisting were obtained, screened, encoded and analyzed statistically. The statistical analysis of data for hoist ropes retired from service showed that rope remaining strength (or, conversely, strength loss) can be predicted with good accuracy if several nondestructive measures of rope damage are assessed. Found to be most important was the outer-wire corrosion rating, the electromagnetic (EM) nondestructive-inspection technique used for predicting strength loss, and the rope diameter reduction. Signs of rope deterioration such as broken wires or damage were also important indicators of strength loss. Based on the results of this investigation, a number of recommendations are presented that promise to yield better rope inspection and retirement criteria which will in turn lead to improved safety and efficiency in underground mine-hoist systems.

It was my intention to have directed the attention of the members of the Institute to a complete series of rocks representing the older and middle formations represented in Pennsylvania, but time has been insufficient for the purpose, and 1 have been unable, in the first attempts to reduce the sections of those rocks, which I have brought with me to this meeting, to the requisite thinness necessary for exhibiting the peculiarities of their constituent minerals. The rocks represented here belong to the various horizons already mentioned, and include gneiss, ferruginous gneiss, chlorite slate, quartzites, and hydro-mica slates, limestones, dolomites, ferruginous conglomerates, quartz conglomerates, " Potomac marble" (nether member of the Mesozoic series), dolerites, and a syenite. The order in which these are named is, roughly, the order .of geographical position in a section line from southeast to northwest, commencing at the intersection of the Northern Central Railroad with the Maryland line, and ending a few miles from the town of York, and a short distance within the marginal outcrop of Mesozoic red sandstone. In such a geographical section all the rocks above mentioned would be encountered in the given order except syenite, about which a few words are to be said in a moment. (But this is far from representing the rocks in their geological sequence.) There is nothing of unusual interest to present to your notice in these slates and quarteites. The limestones were carefully searched tinder 450 diameters microscopic power, but they show no signs of organic remaius. This report summarizes a study conducted to determine the state of the art of various rock removal systems and their capabilities. The objective of the study was to determine if currently manufactured equipment can adequately accomplish rock removal in surface mine reclamation applications. Evaluations of state reclamation regulations, with regard to topsoil rock content, were made to determine the rock removal requirements. The major categories of equipment studied are rock pickers and rock rakes. The impact of rock removal implementation on the reclamation operations is discussed in detail.

In this study, a strontium sulfate mineral (celestite) was converted to strontium oxalate in solutions containing ammonium oxalate as a reactant. The experiments were carried out under isothermal conditions. The effects of stirring speed, ammonium oxalate concentration, particle size and temperature on the conversion rate were investigated. During the conversion process, definite volumes of solutions were taken from the reactor after different reaction times for the determination of sulfate ions using ICPOES. Fractional conversions of strontium sulfate were determined at different times and fractional conversion vs time diagrams were generated. It was found that the conversion of strontium sulfate was increased by increasing the ammonium oxalate concentration and temperature in addition to decreasing the particle size. The effect of stirring speed was negligible on the reaction rate. It was observed that above 328 K, a protective layer of strontium oxalate was formed on the strontium sulfate particles. X-ray Powder Diffraction technique was used for characterization of solid substances.

Growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans on pyrite mineral surfaces and in 9K leach media was studied through estimation of bacterial protein in the different phases. Bacterial attachment was found to be governed by particle size of the mineral, period of incubation and by stationary or agitation conditions used during incubation. Increased bacterial growth in the liquid as well as on the solid phase was observed with decreasing particle size and increasing incubation periods. Increased bacterial attachment to pyrite mineral surfaces was observed to promote iron dissolution.

Large deposits of titaniferous magnetite occur associated with anorthosite and gabbro in the Lake Sanford area, Essex County, New York. The ore, gabbro, and anortbosite show consanguineous relations. Anorthosite grades through gabbroic anortbosite into gabbro but is locally intruded by gabbro. Structural and petrographic evidence suggests that gabbro was differentiated from anorthosite by filter pressing. Field and laboratory study of ore occurrences indicates that an ore residuum concentrated in the gabbro through magmatic segregation' by normal crystallization and flowage. Ore occurs as bands which grade into gabbro, and also as large masses which replace anorthosite. Ore in the gabbro is finer grained and richer in ilmenite than ore in anorthosite. Introduction The Lake Sanford area lies in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, in the southeast portion of the Santanoni Quadrangle (Fig. I), and there are four ore bodies in the area immediately surrounding Lake Sanford. The area lies 30 miles by highway from the railroad at North Creek. The deposits were discovered in 1826, and from then until 1858 iron was produced in small quantities. They were idle from 1858 to 1906. Between 1906 and 1913, extensive development work was carried on. These early attempts to produce iron ore were thwarted by transportation difficulties and by the titanium content of the ore, which, ironically, has been the element responsible for the present development. In 1941 the National Lead Co., Titanium Division, developed the Sanford Hill ore body and is now producing ilmenite and magnetite concentrates.18 The Defense Plant Corporation is extending the railroad to the property from North Creek and is building a sintering plant to treat the magnetite concentrate. Investigations OF the Deposits* Early studies of the Lake Sanford titaniferous magnetite deposits were made by Emmons in 1842,l2 by Kemp, in 1897-98'0 and by Newland in 1908.22 Singewald26 and Osborne23 considered these deposits along with numerous other titaniferous magnetite deposits in 1913 and 1928, respectively. In 1481, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel conducted a survey of mines, prospects, and mineral resources in the Table Mountain RARE II area. There are no mines or active prospects in the study area. One prospect in the study area, the Waterfall Prospect, is estimated to contain 480 tons (440 t) of indicated subeconomic tungsten resources averaging about 0.18 percent tungsten trioxide (W03). Other tungsten occurrences are at the Stevens Prospect, just northwest of the area. Stone and sand and gravel deposits in the area are not considered to be resources because equal or better quality material is available closer to major markets. INTRODUCTION The 4,400-acre Table Mountain study area is 13 mi (21 km) southwest of Bishop, California, on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada range. The John Muir wilderness adjoins the study area on the southwest (fig. 1).

At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dike intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. These metasedimentary rocks have undergone three phases of folding: a first phase of recumbent folds (F1), a second phase (F2) of northerly-trending inclined folds with a prominent crenulation cleavage, and a third phase (F3) of steeply plunging folds. The granite porphyry dike has a thickness of up to 40 m and intrudes thin lamprophyre dikes along its contacts. Deflection of the crenulation cleavage around the granite dike, shearing within the dike and its sinuous outcrop pattern indicate that the granite dike has been deformed during F2 and F3. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with a first stage of magnetite-ankerite alteration. This first stage is cut by a second stage of quartz-pyrite veins and a third stage of sulphide, quartz and ankerite veins, accompanied by pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile¦pyrite-ankerite-sericite assemblages. Lamprophyre is altered to an ankerite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. The sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite. The altered granite and the veins have been deformed and recrystallised. The competent sulphide minerals pyrite and arsenopyrite are fractured and brecciated, with fractures locally filled by galena, a ductile sulphide mineral. Vein quartz shows local cataclastic and mortar textures and develops pressure shadows around arsenopyrite. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre. These features together with the style of veining and the sulphide mineralogy indicate that the mineralisation was formed from a magmatichydrothermal fluid that was sourced from the granite. Oxygen, carbon and sulphur isotope values of the vein minerals (quartz, ankerite and sulphides) are also consistent with a magmatic source.
