DURING a literature survey of the indium-zinc phase diagram, controversial reports on the composition of the eutectic point were encountered. The value reported in the investigation of Wilson and Perettil and in a later investigation by Valen-tiner' was 4.0 wt pct zinc. The most recent work recorded on this system consisted of an exhaustive survey of alloys by Rhines and Grobe8 in which they indicate a value of 2.8 wt pct zinc for the eutectic composition. To clarify this aspect of the diagram, a series of alloys were prepared by melting the respective constituents in a glass test tube under a covering of mineral oil and slowly cooling the melt in a furnace. The zinc used was Baker's C.P. and had the following analysis: insoluble in H2SO4—0.0l pct; pb—0.001 pct; Fe-—0.001 pct. The indium, which was supplied by the Indium Corporation of America, had a purity of 99.9'7 pet with the following impurities: Cu—0.002 pct; Pb—0.006 pct; Sn—0.01 pct; Zn—0.01 pct. The alloys were prepared for metal-lographic examination using a technique already reported' and a new value of 2.0 ± 0.1 wt pct zinc was observed. An alloy containing 2.00 wt pct zinc was also made by melting the constituents under a vacuum. In both of these methods of alloy preparation the losses can be kept extremely small. Again, the characteristic eutectic structure was obtained, assuring confidence in this value. The accompanying micrographs are presented in support of this point. Fig. la represents an alloy containing 4.00 wt pet zinc, and reveals excess zinc particles, which precludes the value of both Wilson and Peretti, and Valentiner. "An acidic chloride leach solution was generated from the treatment of an ore containing the following value elements: silver, gold, indium, gallium, copper, zinc and lead. Iron was also co-extracted into solution as a ferric chloride species. Iron extraction was a significant component of the overall acid consumption of the leaching process. The recovery of iron by solvent extraction and water stripping was investigated. Tri-butyl-phosphate (TBP) was very effective at recovering iron from the leachate. The water strip solution could be decomposed to produce ferric oxide (hematite) and hydrochloric acid for recycle via hydrothermal hydrolysis or pyrohydrolysis.INTRODUCTION The Malku Khota deposit is situated in the eastern part of the Bolivian Altiplano at elevations between approximately 3,800 and 4,580 meters above sea level (Figure 1). Minter (1990) has provided an excellent summary of the sedimentology and theories of origin of the Witwatersrand paleoplacer Au/U deposits. However, recent stratigraphic, metamorphic and structural-tectonic research is radically changing the concepts about the Witwatersrand that now occur in most textbooks, review articles and North American minds. Presently, these concepts are biased by the past sedimentological research so well described by Minter. Specifically, the Witwatersrand Supergroup is Archean, does not occupy a depositional basin and is significantly metamorphosed and deformed. Thus, many of its sedimentary features, including the mineralogy of its ores, have been modified. The importance of the Witwatersrand ores cannot be overestimated. Since their discovery in 1886, they have produced 52% of the gold mined in all of human history (Pretorius, 1989).

In recent years many roof falls have been conveniently attributed to the adverse existence of a high horizontal stress. The normal practice of not conducting a follow-up study in a roof fall investigation usually leads to a wrong conclusion. This paper describes two cases of massive oriented roof falls in two separate room and pillar mines. The investigation in each case involved the analysis of past history and current conditions from which remedial measures were recommended and implemented. A follow-up period of up to three years was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the recommended remedial measures. In both cases, high horizontal stress was proven positively not the cause, contrary to the original conviction of mine management Rather, a weak immediate roof was the basic cause Under a weak immediate roof, a proper roof bolting plan and adequate entry width and intersection span must be strictly observed.

Buttressing is a widely employed control measure for mitigating slope failure in various settings such as openpit mines, road sections, dams, and hilly or rocky terrains. This paper presents a study on the effects of buttressing, specifically concerning slide-head toppling failure. Drawing insights from a case study of slide-head toppling in Zambia, our investigation employs both analytical (limit equilibrium) and numerical (3DEC software) modeling techniques. The analytical and numerical models exhibit notable similarities in their schematics and overall results, revealing a subtle effect of buttressing in controlling slide-head toppling failure. This study contributes valuable insights into the nuanced role of buttressing in slope stability, with implications for optimizing buttress design parameters. While the overall findings suggest a modest influence of buttressing on slide-head toppling failure, further discussions delve into the specific implications and potential refinements for practical applications.

New copper and nickel processes, flash converting and DON, direct high-grade nickel matte smelting, have been developed in order to replace the conventional and not so environmentally friendly PS-converting process. With a laboratory scale laminar-flow furnace the combustion reactions of sulfidic feed particles can be investigated under simulated flash smelting conditions. In the present study, finely ground and screened feed fractions of a copper matte and a nickel matte were flash oxidized in a laminar-flow furnace. The experiments were carried out using 20, 21 vol% and 75 vol% O2 in nitrogen, at temperatures 1100 and 1300 °C and reaction zone length of 7.5-16 cm. The samples were quenched in a water film after a specified reaction time. The matte particle reactions were stopped after short residence time intervals in order to obtain a better understanding of the reaction mechanisms. Chemical analysis was used to determine oxidation degree, and optical and scanning electron microscope combined with energy dispersive analysis was used for characterization of the reacted particles. On the basis of the experimental results the reactivity of the mattes is discussed and possible reaction and dust formation mechanisms are considered.

Bulong remains the only hydrometallurgical process plant in the world that recovers nickel and cobalt directly from high pressure acid leach (HPAL) laterite leach liquors without need for precipitation of an intermediate product (e.g. sulphide, hydroxide or carbonate). Direct solvent extraction (DSX) of both nickel and cobalt in combination with electrowinning of nickel has been operation at Bulong since early 1999. Focus in the first years has been on ramp-up and resolution of commissioning problems. More recently the focus has been on de-bottlenecking and process optimisation. A number of significant process problems have been resolved, the most difficult being the formation of gypsum in the nickel solvent extraction circuit. Sound control of process chemistry is essential to ensure the production of high quality nickel and cobalt products at the lowest possible cost. This paper describes the numerous changes and enhancements to the process chemistry and plant equipment at Bulong and discusses the importance of ore leach chemistry on downstream impurity metal removal. Potential additional enhancements to further reduce unit costs are also presented.

AS a result of recent studies, the constitution of the zirconium-uranium system has been fairly well defined. A diagram for the system is shown in Fig. 1. However, both oxygen and nitrogen are known1-3 to have a pronounced effect on the limits of both ß- and e -phase regions. It has been shown that small amounts of oxygen severely constrict the compositional limits of these phase regions in the ternary zirconium-uranium-oxygen system. A previously published tentative diagram shown in Fig. 2 illustrates the ß-phase constriction resulting from oxygen additions. Generally, iodide zirconium has been used in constitutional studies of zirconium-uranium alloys. While this is the highest purity material available, cast iodide zirconium-uranium alloys will generally average from 200 to 300 ppm 0 and from 50 to 60 ppm N. Thus, while the constitution of the zirconium-uranium system is fairly well defined, it must be realized that this definition applies to alloys containing in the vicinity of 250 ppm 0 and 50 ppm N. Abstract - The Archean Superior Province craton and the Paleoproterozoic Penokean Orogen are major geological sub-divisions of the southern Canadian Shield and account for much of the metallic mineral production of North America. The Superior Province experienced a mainly Archean history involving several cycles of volcanism, plutonism, and tectonism, primarily in the Neo-archean but also including Meso-archean and Paleo-archean cycles as well. Superior Province consists of northern and southern high-grade gneiss sub-provinces and a broad central region of alternating greenstone-granite and metasedimentary belts. The sub-provinces may represent tectonic terranes assembled in the Archean by accretion processes similar to those of some Phanerozoic orogens. Most of the mineral deposits, including VMS, intrusion-related, and lode gold deposits occur in the greenstone- granite sub-provinces where they were formed in an interval of 100 million years or less around 2.7 Ga. The Paleoproterozoic Penokean Orogen comprises supracrustal sequences deposited in fault-controlled epicratonic and rifted margin settings developed on and about the Superior craton. Deposition of the ~2.4 Ga Huronian Supergroup and its paleoplacer uranium deposits in the eastern Penokean Orogen, and their pre-2.2 Ga deformation, were probably unrelated to the deposition of the ~2.1 Ga Marquette Range and Animikie groups and their major taconite iron formations in the west. However, these sequences were deformed together during the ~1.85 Ga Penokean Orogeny which resulted when an assembly of island arcs containing VMS deposits, the Wisconsin magmatic terrane, collided with the Superior block and its Paleoproterozoic cover. The Sudbury structure with its world class Ni-Cu-PGE ores was also formed at this time, possibly triggered by meteorite impact. Metallogenic patterns in the Paleoproterozoic rocks were controlled by a complex interplay of factors including tectonically controlled variations in deposition and deformation, distribution of mineralization in the Archean basement, and oxyatmoversion, the transition from anoxic to oxygenic atmospheric conditions that occurred during the deposition of these sequences.

Definite transition behavior was found in unalloyed titanium at 0.13 pct 0 equivalent. The addition of 0.5 Sn, 1.0 Al, 0.5 Al, and 1.0 Sn lowers the tvansition temperature of titanium at oxygen equivalents exceeding 0.22, 0.29, 0.40, and 0.51, respectively. Metallographic evidence indicates that progressive amounts of oxygen restrict deformation at low temperatures resulting eventually in brittle fracture. The presence of tin or aluminum is thought to alter the atomic distribution of oxygen within the titanium lattice in such a manner as to facilitate some degree of slip and twinning. 1 ITANIUM-like iron and zinc experiences a transition from ductile to brittle fracture with decreasing temperature. The presence of sufficient quantities of the interstitial elements, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in solid solution, has been shown to progressively lower the room-temperature impact resistance of titanium with increasing interstitial content.1"1 Ogden,et al,2 reported finding no transition from ductile to brittle fracture with decreasing temperature in iodide titanium. However, a definite transition was found to occur at 0.36 pct 0 equivalent in an alloy containing 0.47 pct carbon in solid solution. The oxygen equivalent in this case was obtained by assuming the effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in combination on the impact properties of titanium to be additive on the same basis as their separate effects on tensile strength, namely: Oe = 2/3 (pct C) + pet 0 + 2 (pet N) They concluded that the tendency toward transition behavior is dependent on the total interstitial content in solid solution and not on any one particular interstitial element. Rennhack,4 however, recently found transition behavior in iodide titanium at an oxygen equivalent of 0.17 pct. Ogden, etal3, reported that the strengthening effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in titanium decrease with the addition of tin. They showed that tin additions increase the tolerance of titanium for the interstitials, that is, 10 pct Sn permitted individual additions of up to 0.4 wt pct of the interstitial elements without any significant loss in ductility. Aluminum tends to decrease ductility and impact strength of titanium for a given interstitial ~ontent.3 Van Thyne and Kessler5 found that the solid solubility of carbon in titanium doubled in the presence of 10 pct Al. The precise effects of tin and aluminum in the nrespncp of rorvfen nn the impact properties of titanium had previously not been determined. The high oxygen tolerance of titanium containing tin may provide a suitable means for improving the impact properties of titanium containing the interstitial elements, particularly oxygen. Unlike tin, however, aluminum has a high affinity for oxygen and will reduce rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2)by a thermit-type reaction.6 Thus, the atomic distribution of oxygen in titanium might be different in the presence of aluminum. The present work was undertaken to: 1) Determine the effect of oxygen on the transition behavior of unalloyed iodide titanium. 2) Determine the effect of small amounts of tin and aluminum on the transition behavior of iodide titanium in the presence of oxygen and other interstitial~. EXPERIMENTAL Three different lots of iodide titanium were employed to prepare the alloys studied in the present work. Their chemical composition is presented in Table I. The compositions of the tin and aluminum used for alloying are shown in Table 11. Oxygen additions were made using calcined rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2)of 99.7 pct purity. During the lifetime of an open pit mining project, each stage from exploration activities to exploitation and mine closure produces disturbances on the mining region. Mined land reclamation plans establish constructive solutions to rehabilitate the disturbed areas. Open pit mining as an effective method for exploitation of a wide range of orebodies especially for massive reserves of shallow metallic substances has exhaustive and harmful environmental effects on the mining project region. Nowadays, closure and reclamation stage in a mining project is emphatically enforced by the relevant environmental protection regulations in many countries. It is therefore obvious that closure and reclamation costs of an open pit mining project, as costs of other stages of project, must be estimated to enter the planning and design processes in open pit mining. Post-mining land use is the most important factor to recognise closure and reclamation costs. Thus, using a model to define optimal land use in planning phase of an open pit mining project is necessary in this regard. In this project a model was developed to define optimal land use regarding different sections of open pit mines such as pit(s), waste dump(s), tailing pond(s), roads, areas for onsite facilities and free land zones which are not mined. TOPSIS and PROMETHE techniques were applied to create the developed model. Lumber production was recognised as the optimal post-mining land use for the pit area of the case study in this project.

The mining of coal, phosphate, oil, gas, and sodium on the public lands of the United States has, during a long period of years, been prevented by the failure of Congress to legislate, notwithstanding the fact that each successive Congress has vainly attempted to enact a law. Disagreements among members of Congress, many of which have related to non-essential matters, have prevented the passage of a bill, the failure at the last session having been due to a fillibuster in the Senate against the conference report led by Senator LaFollette of Wisconsin. Seven bills covering this subject have been introduced into the present Congress, four of which are identical in nearly all essential respects and follow either precisely or closely the conference agreement of the last Congress. These bills are too long to permit of review in this column. In general they provide for the leasing of lands or privileges to mine or to recover the various minerals above mentioned under terms and conditions as to the amount of land that may be leased by any one applicant, the diligence with which the work must be prosecuted, the return or royalty demanded, and the term of the lease and extensions thereof.

Plant growth is likely to prove the most suitable and satisfactory material to stabilise and cover quarry faces and worked-out surface mining sites. The careful selection of plant species is of paramount importance to the success of any attempts to re- vegetate these sites. Various tech- niques are recommended and attention is drawn to different factors,which will adversely affect plant growth.

The Hasancelebi iron deposit in Eastern Turkey is a very low grade (average 20% oxide) magnetite body consisting of 720 million longtons of proven reserve at a 10% cut-off limit. The ore-bearing scapolitic oclcs cover an area of approximately 4300m x 300m, and the thickness of the outcropping deposit exceeds 300m. Prefeasibility project studies revealed that a one degree decrease in a 45° final slope angle of the proposed pit would require excavation of approximately 10 million cubic meters of excess waste material, for a projected pit bottom 300 meters below the valley floor. There- fore, determination of the final slope angles of the open pit was considered to be the most important task in the feasibility analysis of this project. In this investigation, the main emphasis was given to collection, compilation and evaluation of the engineering geological, hydrogeological and rock mechanics data of the highly fractured and weathered rocks. Due to the presence of intense fracturing, the rock wedge analysis method was used for projected 30m-high benches and the circular failure analysis method was used for the stability of the projected final pit slopes. The proposed bench slope angles ranged between 60° and 80°, whereas the projected final slope angles varied between 30° and 48°, depending on the slope heights and groundwater levels.

This paper presents an actor-critic reinforcement learning (RL) method to allocate trucks and shovels in open-pit mines, while defining short-term production scheduling of an industrial mining complex, given new information collected during operations. This new data obtained from sensors update the uncertainty of the orebody models. The RL agents interact with the mining complex environment; exploring the solution space, learning actions to improve metal production and equipment utilisation. A case study is presented at a copper mining complex, highlighting the method’s ability to adapt and make informed decisions while collecting new information.

It is often desirable to obtain one or more accurate horizontal sections of a blast furnace after blowing out. Wishing to do this, last April, in the case of No. 4 furnace at Glendon, which had worn in a very remarkable manner, the method described below was employed, with very good results. A scaffold was fixed in the furnace, and on it was placed a drawingboard, covered with paper, the top of which was made level at exactly the height at which the section was to he taken. (Fig. 8.) The centre of the furnace (which had previously been found, and marked on a plank across the top) was laid off on it by dropping a plumb-bob from above, and a strong needle was driven into the board in the centre. The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) has undertaken an interceptor expansion program to meet future wastewater needs associated with projected growth over the next 20 years. The Lower Northwest Interceptor (LNWI) will include over 17 miles (27 kilometers) of pipeline including 14 miles (23 kilometers) of dual force main ranging in size from 54- to 60-inch (137- to 152-centimeter) diameter and 3 miles (5 kilometers) of 120-inch (305-centimeter) diameter gravity pipeline. The estimated capital cost for the program is $331 million, with approximately $236 million in construction cost (as of November 2002). The project includes 4,700 feet (1,433meters) of tunnel including 2 crossings of the Sacramento River and one crossing of the Barge Canal, and 11 other smaller tunnel crossings beneath various creeks, sloughs, highways, and railroads. Preliminary design of the tunnels for the LNWI are discussed in this paper. The overall purpose of the preliminary design was to sufficiently define the project to allow planning level cost and schedule estimates to be performed. There have been changes to the project during final design including pipe sizes and configurations, tunnel and pipeline lengths and anticipated flows. This paper addresses only the preliminary design of the LNWI tunnels. Final design issues and changes made since completion of preliminary design are not addressed in this paper.

The construction of 1200 m length new quay wall located 1,300 m East of the existing Suez Canal bypass and about 1,000 m south of the Mediterranean shoreline is one of the main projects currently under development in Egypt. Due to very weak foundation soil, mainly soft clay, a particular effort, both in terms of design approach and construction feasibility, has been required. The execution of "barrettes" and T-shaped" diaphragm wall panels down to a depth of 65 m and under extremely severe soil condition has been required in order to pass through the upper soft soil and to reach a competent base layer. Very critical and variable hydrological conditions have been also encountered due to the contemporary nearby channel dredging activity, thus increasing the difficulty for maintaining the stability of the slurry trenches opened in soft material. This paper gives a general overview of the project with some emphasis to the most significant design aspects and to the construction of the deep foundation elements.
