Louisiana experienced deeper and increased drilling during 1934, resulting in the discovery of five new fields: Bosco, Acadia and St. Landry Parishes; Lake Hermitage, Plaquemines Parish; Roanoke, Jefferson Davis Parish; Gillis, Calcasieu Parish; and Four Isle, Terrebonnc Parish. New sands were discovered at New Iberia, Iberia Parish; Lake Washington, Plaquemines Parish; Sligo, Bossier Parish; and in the Rodessa gas field, Caddo Parish. Other miscellaneous events worthy of mention are the continued leasing of prospective oil and gas lands in North and South Louisiana, extensive geophysical work in the Gulf Coastal area, and increased interest in the development of flank production on piercement type domes, resulting in the acquisition of flank acreage and the leasing of several shallow domes in the Gulf Coast and Interior salt-dome areas. The total oil production for Louisiana during 1934 was 32,529,082 bbl., an increase of 6,929,280 bbl. over 1933. The total daily production at the end of the year from 2421 wells was 102,752 barrels. North Louisiana During the year, 144 oil wells and 68 gas wells were completed in North Louisiana as compared with 111 oil wells and 47 gas wells during 1933. The North Louisiana oil production was 9,274,050 bbl. as compared with 10,023,580 bbl. during 1933, a decline of 749,530 bbl. The normal decline in the old fields and especially in the Zwolle area was partly offset by increased production in the Converse field, Sabine Parish, and by acid treatment of wells in the Zwolle, Converse and Caddo fields. There were no new fields discovered during 1934. During the year R. W. Norton enlarged the boundaries and reserves of the Rodessa gas field. A series of gas-bearing sands, was discovered in J. B. French, No. 1-B, sec. 34, 23 N. 16 W., below the oolitic lime found at 5500 ft. in which formation all previous wells had been completed. The total depth of this well was 5825 ft. Commencing in 1922, each year a lecture has been presented to the Institute of Metals Division at this February meeting. The range of subjects has been very- broad. Some speakers have dealt with the most advanced work in the very heart of the science of physical metallurgy. Others have stimulated our imaginations by discussing the most recent progress in related fields of science. Others have told us of the latest art, which is at any moment of greater practical importance than the latest science, of metals. I feel that this broad precedent in the choice of subjects will justify my choosing to talk about some of the prosaic details of how, during the last generation, industry has effectively organized research to accelerate progress in our own and all other fields of science and related art. A number of years ago I visited one of this country's well-known research laboratories and had the pleasure of chatting for a few minutes with its equally well-known director. Being particularly interested at the time in the organization problems connected with industrial research, I broached that subject. My host stated in effect that he didn't believe in organized research. He was, of course, resorting to a rhetorical hyperbole. to pain: out the danger of overorganization which can so easily drift into regimentation and destroy individual initiative. Actually nearly all of us, much as we cherish our personal freedom of action, believe in organization because the history of progress in every field of human activity has been a history of men learning to work together, to cooperate, to create an efficient division of labor. We use organization to achieve this coordination. At the same time our form of organization must not stifle individual initiative or it will prove a deterrent rather than an aid to accomplishment. Research, too, must be organized for greatest achievement but especial skill and care are perhaps needed to avoid stifling the initiative of the individual workers. I have, of course, followed with keen interest and much benefit the vast amount . that has been said and written on this subject in the past twenty years but I still find new stimulation in discussions with my good friends working in this field. It is my hope that this discussion may serve a like purpose. It would be ungracious not to make due acknowledgment to the many able contributors to this particular phase of human progress, but their very number and the great volume of their writing makes it impossible to trace to any one individual a particular significant and valuable idea. I shall content myself therefore with this general acknowledgment and with acknowledgment of the specific debt that every research man owes to those who have so ably kept before the public, and in particular before industrial executives, the place of research in the modern scheme of things' Because of the legitimate publicity thus given to research, the day is past when any

A study of pelletization of one imported chromite concentrate with coarse site, poor ballability and refractory roasting performance was conducted in small scale tests, and high pressure grinding rollers (HPGR) was used to improve the pelletization. The mechanism of HPGR was revealed by means of SEM images and optical microscopy. Compared with the ball milling pretreatment, HPGR pretreatment can not only enhance the ballability of pellet feed but also drop the roasting temperature. Fired pellets, containing proper chemical compositions with high compressive strength of 2917N/pellet and good metallurgical performances, have been manufactured. The mechanism of HPGR reveals that chromite particle surface turns to more irregular after HPGR treatment and more new surface being formed because of more cracks, sharp corners and edges appearing, resulting in higher surface chemical activity, all of which improve the ballability of the chromite concentrate and contribute to the consolidation of fired pellets.

Two pieces of European Union (EU) legislation together establish requirements for protection against risks from vibration at work. The vibration directive1 specifies duties of employers to protect workers from risks from exposure to vibration; the machinery directive2, specifies duties of manufacturers and suppliers regarding the safety of machinery marketed in the EU. This paper discusses both directives and the standardisation programmes that support them. It also addresses the implementation of these requirements in Great Britain. Employers’ duties: the vibration directive This directive requires employers to assess and control risks to health and safety arising from hand-arm vibration (HAV) and whole-body vibration (WBV). Member States were required to implement the directive in national legislation by 6 July 2005. Employers are required to eliminate vibration risk at source, or reduced to a minimum. The duties include: assessing risk and exposure; planning and implementing the necessary risk control measures; providing and maintaining suitable work equipment; providing workers with information and training on risks and their control; and monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of the risk control programme. Daily exposure exceeding a specified action value triggers a requirement for a programme of technical and organisational measures to minimise vibration exposures and the resulting risk, and the provision of health surveillance. Exposures above a specified limit value are prohibited. When conducting their risk assessments, employers are required to “assess and, if necessary, measure” the vibration exposure of workers, for comparison with the action and limit values. Vibration measurement in the workplace is not expected in all cases and the use of vibration information from equipment manufacturers is specifically mentioned. This provides a link with the machinery directive (see below). Manufacturers’ and suppliers’ duties: The machinery directive The machinery directive, first introduced in 1989, is intended to remove barriers to trade. It puts duties on manufacturers and suppliers who place machinery on the European market to design their products to eliminate or reduce risks to health and safety and to warn the user of any residual risks, providing information required for safe use (for example, operator training, maintenance and selection of consumables). Tungsten ingots with and without small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium were prepared by conventional powder-metallurgy techniques and hot-rolled to 0.001-in.-thick sheet. The ingots were rolled three different ways: I) initially cross-rolled, then straight-rolled; 2) straight-rolled, and 3) straig-ht-rolled, then cross-rolled. Total reductions were 99.8 pct. Samples of the sheet were annealed, in vacuo, at temperatures from 1200" to 2200°C. Substructures and textures were determined by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The doping agents were found to form particles of mullite (Al,Si,O,,) which, on rolling., appear to form strings of particles aligned parallel to the rolling direction. These strings of purticles are associated with an increase in the recrystal-lizution temperature from 1400°C for undoped sheet ThE addition of small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium to tungsten has a profound effect on the grain structure of drawn and recrystallized wire.'" The grains generally do not occupy the entire cross section of the wire and have lengths many times the wire diameter. The grain boundaries are, in general, nearly parallel to the wire axis and have long ''fingers" projecting one into the other as may be seen in Fig. 1, a longitudinal section of recrystallized doped wire. When unsuitable additions or no additions are made or the wire is not sufficiently reduced during draw- to 2000°C for doped sheet. The particles also limit lateral grain growth while allowing growth parallel to the rolling direction. This results in the formation by primary re crystallization of large highly elongated grains of specific preferred orientation. The undoped sheet recrystallized to small equiaxed gains. The preferred orientations of the large grains were determined from axis density plots to be (113) (691). (0i3) (362), (116) (304) types for the initially cross-rolled then straight rolled material. These orientations are similar to the orientations of the large elongated grains in doped and heavily drawn tungsten wire. The nucleation of the large grains appears to occur by recovery of certain of the polygonized regions of specific orientation, followed by strain-induced boundary migration.

"Pb-based alloys with Pr and Ag were prepared in vacuum electromagnetic induction furnace. The tensile strength, corrosion rate and anodic potential in sulfate solution were measured, and the experimental data were analyzed according to the metallographic phases of alloys, the micromorphology and composition of their oxide films. The results show that, with the addition of Pr, the ultimate tensile strength and corrosion rate of pure lead were increased, and the anodic potential decreased. The extra addition of Ag can improve the properties of alloy further. Comparing with Pb-Ag0.8 alloy which is widely used in zinc electrowinning industry, the ultimate tensile strength of Pb-Ag0.6-Pr2.0 alloy was increased by 31.75%, the anodic potential under 50mA/cm2 was decreased by 30m V.IntroductionIn zinc electrowinning industry, the Pb-Ag (0.5-1.0 wt.%, 0.8wt.% normally) anode is widely used as an insoluble anode['l. It can meet the basic requirements, but still has several problems such as high oxygen evolution over-potential (about 860mV), unsatisfactory corrosion resistance, lead contamination of the cathode product and high consumption of Ag etc.In order to reduce the energy consumption, enhance the corrosion resistance, improve the product quality and reduce the consumption of Ag (or even dispense with it), much research has been done, mainly focusing on Pb-based alloy anodes and Ti-based coated anodes. Detailed investigations have already been carried out on binary alloys (Pb-Ca and Pb-Co), ternary alloys (Pb-Ag-Ca, Pb-Ag-Ti, Pb-Ag-Sn, Pb-Sr-Sn, and Pb-Ca-Sn) and quaternary alloys (Pb-Ca-Sr-Ag, Pb-Ca-Ce-Ag, and Pb-Ag-Sn-Co)[Z-4l, Although these anodes can effectively reduce the consumption of Ag, only the Pb-Co and Pb-Ag-Sn-Co anodes perform well with regard to reducing the anodic potential. However, their complicated manufacturing conditions restrict further commercial use.Besides its application in nonferrous metal electro-winning industry, Pb-based alloy is also used as grid alloy for lead-acid battery, serving as active materials supporter and current collector. In order to enhance the corrosion resistance and deep-cycling performance, reduce the impedance of the corrosion film, the addition of appropriate rare earth elements into anodic grid alloys has become a research focus. Studies proved that RE can enhance the mechanical strength of grids, inhibit the formation of anodic Pb(II) film on the surface of grids and then reduce the impedance of the film[ 10-12l."

The authors have summarized the state-of-the-art in the kaolin clay industry very well. In some instances the problems which they have identified are common to all fine particle separations and in other cases the problems are unique to the kaolin clay industry itself. General areas of research which may be common to other systems and which deserve continued investigation at a higher level of support include: 1) Establishment of the relationship between flotation response and clay structure/composition. 2) Determination of temperature effects in the separation of fine particles. 3) Evaluation of the effect of bubble size on the quality of fine particle separation. The first two areas would require basic surface chemistry studies including microflotation, electrokinetics, adsorption density measurements, and microcalorimetry. The last area would be oriented toward the mechanics of bubble-particle attachment. Regarding the first area, the authors alluded to this research need by commenting on the variation in separation observed from one deposit to another. It seems that a detailed study characterizing the flotation response of various clay types with respect to structure and compositional features would be of considerable value. For example, I understand, that D. W. Fuerstenau's group has recently been successful in characterization, with respect to structure, of some silicate mineral types--chain, sheet and framework silicates. According to the 2010-2019 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident report database, 91% of reported ground control accidents in U.S. longwall mines were caused by roof instability. Gateroads are subject to significant changes in loading conditions from the development to the longwall abutment loading phases. When combined with thinly bedded shale roof, found in many U.S. longwall coal mines, the design of efficient roof support becomes challenging. In previous work, the Bonded Block Method (BBM) modeling of roof by UDEC was validated against field extensometer measurements in a longwall gateroad entry roof at a 180-m depth of cover. The BBM was shown as capable of capturing delamination and buckling of shale roof, one of the main roof instability mechanisms in longwall mines. This paper presents the recent findings on the roof-support interaction using BBM models of the same longwall entry. The effects of cable bolts, roof bolt density, and strap support on potential roof instability are studied. These types of studies are difficult and costly to conduct in an operating mine. Results show how the contribution of bolts, straps, and cable bolts can be quantified using the BBM models. The study demonstrates the potential for BBM numerical models to help understand the complex roof and support system interactions and to assist with optimizing gateroad support systems.

A series of rare earth cobalt compounds of the composition RCoa (r = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Ev, Tm, Lu) has been prepared. The compounds crystallize in space gvoup R3m and are isomorphous with PuNi3. Except for CeCo3 and PrCo, the series shows decreasing- values of a. and co. The relalively small parameters of CeCo, and PrCo, are explained by valencies of cerium or praseodymium which exceed the usual rare earth valency of three. The structure of the compounds is discussed as in-fillings of kagome nets in direct and staggered superposition. In the course of a systematic investigation of rare earth cobalt compounds"2 and their magnetic properties,, a series of alloys corresponding to the formula Rco3 has been prepared. The investigation of the Rco3 series was stimulated by our investigation of the yttrium cobalt system2 as well as by reports in the literature: Smith and Hansen4 reported the structure of YcO3 and Van vucht5 that of GdCo3; ceco3,6 Gdco3,7 and DyCo3 7 have been found to be single-phase during phase diagram studies. It was the purpose of this work to report crystallographic data on the entire Rco3 series and to interpret the structure of these compounds on the basis of general principles as discussed by Frank and Kasper.8 At the time this work was terminated, it was learned that a similar investigation has been carried out independently by Bertaut, Lemaire, and schweizer.9 Except for CeCo3 (ao = 4.952, co = 24.73') and NdCo3 (a0 = 5.067, co = 24.76') data of this work are in satisfactory agreement with their investigation. Greater progress than in any previous year was accomplished by the oil industry in New Mexico in 1936. The total number of completions in the state was 631, of which 549 were oil wells, 21 were hydrocarbon gas wells, three were carbon dioxide gas wells, and 58 were dry holes. The total oil production for the year was 26,804,446 bbl. Compared with the production for 1935 of 20,228,947 bbl., this represented a gain of 32.5 per cent. Of the total production, 25,337,382 bbl. came from Lea County. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for that county was 115 bbl. the first of the year and 86 bbl. at the close. A device for detecting carbon monoxide at ppm levels is described which is based on the measurement of infrared absorption at 4.65 microns. The unique feature of the nondispersive infrared instrument is contained in the optical design which includes a confocal cavity, increasing the effective optical path length by a large factor, thus greatly reducing the required package size. The cavity has the effect of reducing the total amount of radiation passing to the detector, but at the same time increasing the percent attenuation observed when adding CO, by a factor called gain. The radiation is chopped by a filter wheel which contains narrow band filters at 4.0 and 4.65 microns. The resultant signal produced by the pyroelectric detector is demodulated by the electronics to product an automatic gain control signal, proportional to the total radiation, and a difference signal, proportional to the CO present. Tests of a breadboard model are described which show cavity gains of 10 with noise levels equivalent to 2 to 10 ppm CO.

The source of base metals in modern seafloor hydrothermal systems can be attributed to leaching of host rocks by hydrothermal fluids and/or potentially by direct degassing of magma. From an economic perspective, metal grade is the most important consideration for seafloor deposits. Tectonic setting appears to be a key factor influencing the development of high grade seafloor base metal sulfide deposits. Back-arcs have a clear advantage over other settings in producing large and rich polymetallic sulfide ores. Microinclusions of magma or so-called melt inclusions trapped in phenocrysts of lavas have contributed to our understanding of the ore-forming process. n this study, we present data from 103 melt inclusions mainly in plagioclase crystals hosted in basaltic to rhyolitic lavas from 9 modern seafloor tectonic settings: oceanic back-arcs (Manus Basin including an ODP Leg 193 drill hole, Bransfield Straits), continental back-arc (Okinawa Trough), mid-ocean ridges (Explorer, MAR), seamounts (Foundation, Axial, Pito), and a transform (Garrett). Most sites host active hydrothermal systems that are producing polymetallic sulfides.

The paper describes studies made at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, UK, of the mechanical cutting characteristics using disc cutters, of rocks with compressive strengths up to 340 MPa. These studies have been performed in both the single pass mode, where interactive breakout occurs between adjacent grooves on every pass of the tool, and the multiple pass mode, where several passes may be required to cause breakout. In addition, experiments to determine the effect on cutting performance of the hydraulic stiffness of tunnelling machines are described. The results of these tests are analysed and discussed in the context of the design of full-face tunnelling machines.

The strongly skewed grade distributions and the need to estimate the local recoverable reserves in a selective mining environment are the two problems that ordinary kriging (OK) cannot easily handle. With the recent introduction of the non- parametric, distribution-free technique of indicator kriging (IK), the above problems can be solved. This paper describes the result of performance evaluation of IK in an open-pit gold-silver deposit. For performance evaluation, the predictions of local recoverable reserves using IK were compared with the actual reserves based on blasthole information. The IK estimator, although a bit optimistic (or overestimating), performed very well in predicting the total recoverable ounces of gold from each panel on a test bench. The OK estimator was also used to try to predict local recoverable reserves, by treating each panel as either waste or ore, depending on the panel's average grade. Under this criterion, OK was found to be quite biased and pessimistic (or underestimating).
