Definition of the optimum open pit, whether an intermediate phase or final design, will be sensitive to many factors. The most basic will include geological and mining constraints, mining and processing costs, pit slopes and product prices. The application of the three dimensional Lerchs-Grossmann pit optimization procedure to this task is described for a range of gold deposits. A new approach to the modelling and manipulation of the geological model enables complex geological environments to be assessed, and sensitivity analyses to be developed. Comparisons with manually developed pit designs have been made to validate the results. The computer implementation is simple to use and can be adapted by non-computer professionals at mine Sites.

The identification of the real internal rates of return (IRR's) of a project is essential for its economic evaluation. The existing methods for the calculation of IRR's are both cumbersome and unreliable, mainly because of their inability to effectively isolate the real IRR's and incapability of discovering multiple IRR's of even multiplicity. In this paper, a concept of the 'cash flow pattern tree used for isolation of the real IRR's of a project is presented. This concept, combined with the Sturm procedure for counting the real distinct zeros of a polynomial within a specified interval, leads to the development of a method and computer program for isolation and calculation of the real IRR's of a project. The method examines whether or not real IRR's exist, and if they do, isolates them within bounded and narrow intervals in a mathematically founded way. The isolated IRR's, whether simple or multiple, are subsequently calculated either directly or by means of an appropriate approximation procedure. Numerical examples assist the development of the method and the corresponding computer algorithm. Because any Net Present Value treated as a function of interest rate can easily be transformed into a polynomial, the method presented also constitutes a method for finding the real zeros of a polynomial.

In 1915, the State of California passed a law of great scope and importance. This law has been in successful operation for a year and may be briefly described as an act " establishing and creating a department of the State Mining Bureau for the protection of the natural resources of petroleum and gas from waste and destrucbion through improper operations in production; providing for the inspection of petroleum and gas wells; requiring all persons operating petroleum and gas wells to make certain reports" and providing the necessary officers and assessments to carry out the provisions of the act. The statute provides for a separate department of the State Mining Bureau, under the general supervision of the State mineralogist, with a staff composed of a "state oil and gas supervisor" and four deputies. It rules that all petroleum and natural gas wells shall be drilled, operated or abandoned under the supervision of the State supervisor, who shall order such tests or remedial work as seems to him necessary to protect the interests of property owners and the general public. It also provides for a board of arbitration to consider orders given by the supervisor which are not acceptable to the well owner. Section 18 of the act, which is the provision that is directly related to this paper, requires ('the owner of any well referred to in this act to keep a careful and accurate log of the drilling of such well," and further requires that this log shall show the character and depth of the formations passed through or encountered in the drilling, particularly the location and depth of the water-bearing strata; the character of the water encountered (so far as ascertained); whether the water was shut off, and, if solat what point; that it shall show completely the amounts, kinds and size of casing used; the depth at which oil-bearing strata are encountered; the depth and character of the strata, and whether all water was successfully and permanently shut off so as to prevent percolation or penetration into the oil-bearing strata. The preliminary modifying factors for future stope design in the Southern Mine Area of Olympic Dam consisted of only a single, arbitrary value of Equivalent Linear Overbreak/Sloughing (ELOS). In order to improve this, a study was conducted which developed a more comprehensive methodology for assigning ELOS, Equivalent Linear Lost Ore (ELLO) and Equivalent Linear Fill Overbreak (ELFO) to individual stope faces based on geotechnical and mining parameters. The approach used was to look at the simple cases, which were classed as vertical stope walls in good ground (RQD 80-100%), divided into wall orientations (North, South, East, West). The stope walls were also split based on the blasting practice used (toeing, parallel or a combination of the two). The expected ELOS and ELLO from these ‘base cases’ are then modified by parameters which have historically been found to affect stope performance (Hydraulic Radius and Q’). The size of the effect found in the historical data determines the ELOS / ELLO applied. The methodology was summarised in an easy to use flow chart and was applied to all of the proposed stope shapes for the Southern Mine Area and summarised per mining block. This allowed each iteration of the mine plan to be assessed in terms of overbreak (both rock and vertical fill exposures) and underbreak.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors which affect the performance of the loading and hauling fleet and also find possible solutions to eliminate these factors, so that the daily tonnages required could be produced .This is due to the high demand of manganese required by clients. The investigation strongly focuses on the performances of the three 777D Caterpillar trucks and the R984 C Liebherr Litronic Hydraulic Excavator. In the content of the study, these machines are used to remove and move the low grade manganese (also known as the top cut overburden) in order to expose the high grade manganese from north pit to dump 4. The objectives of the project were to determine the actual performance of the loading and hauling fleet per shift, compare the actual and the theoretical performance and identify areas that need to be improved. To achieve the goals set for the project, a number of activities were carried out. ?Perform a time study to compare the performance of the loading and hauling fleet with the manufacturer specifications ?Match the equipments analysis for Loading and hauling ?Road conditions analysis ?Rolling resistance and Road Gradients analysis ?Operating cost analysis.

"From a lifecycle point of view, biologically digested sludge is a valuable product that should be reused if possible. In contrast to landfill and incineration, application of digested sludge comprises the recycling nutrients and organic matter and reflects the policy of resource conservation and sustainability in waste management. Sludge may be applied to agricultural land for further sludge treatment and improvement of the characteristics of the soil. The characteristics of sludge that affect its applicability for soil conditioning include moisture content, pathogens, nutrients and metals. In this paper, the use of solid anaerobic digestion sludge of the lignocellulosic residues to condition soil was investigated in regards to nutrient composition, water content/retention capacity, hygienic quality (contamination of pathogenic bacteria) and heavy metal adsorbing/releasing characteristics of the sludge.The digested sludge had approximately 44.5% free and immobilized water and 46.9% bound water. The water-holding capacity of the sludge was high. This was the first merit to apply the sludge to agriculture in dry areas. Secondly, the sludge was rich in macro-nutrients (N, P, K) and a series of micro-nutrients (Ca, Mg, Mn, Na, Fe, Cu, Zn, B). The water-soluble fractions of macro-nutrients in the sludge were found considerably low. This implied that the loss or leaching of the macro-nutrients from the anaerobic sludge to the aqueous environment be slow. The nutrients loss owing to leaching could be reduced. However, because of a lower macro-nutrient content of the anaerobic sludge, comparable to the chemical fertilizer, it is advisable that the anaerobic sludge be applied together with commercial fertilizer to the agriculture land. Thirdly, the anaerobic sludge had strong selective adsorption affinity for heavy metal ions; non-heavy metal ions such as K(I) and Ca(II) could be released easily from the sludge in a wide pH range, such as pH from 1.0 to 8.0. Since the metal toxicity to the environment mainly comes from the mobile heavy metal ions, the selectivity to adsorb heavy metal ions of the anaerobic sludge can be utilized to reduce the availability of heavy metal ions to plants and humans in aquatic environment. Fourthly, the anaerobic digestion under thermophilic conditions showed a promising disinfecting effect to the sludge, in contrast to the landfill digestion."

Mines in Queensland must now prepare a Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure (PRC) plan, with the requirement to justify the selection of the post-mining land use (PMLU) for each rehabilitation domain. Given that there are nearly 200 mines who must undertake a comprehensive PMLU assessment, there is a need to develop methods that will minimise the duplication of effort. As part of a broader initiative on innovative post-mining land use planning, this project undertook a regional analysis of the technical suitability of several PMLUs.

Detailed studies of the microstructures and compositions of zinc and lead blast furnace sinters have been undertaken. An analysis of the results obtained has indicated that in many cases the microstructures of these complex materials can be explained by the solidification of melts from pseudo-ternary phase systems. Further laboratory studies have been carried out to more accurately determine the extent of primary phase fields and the liquidus temperatures in the appropriate binary and ternary systems. This approach shows considerable promise in simplifying the descriptions of slag systems used in oxidising and reduction smelting processes for lead and zinc recovery.

Ever since the 8ms criterion was developed in the early 60’s there has been an ongoing debate among many blasters as to its actual value in controlling ground vibration. The perpetuation of the myth surrounding the 8ms window can be partly attributed to its simplicity and convenience as a means for regulatory compliance. Unfortunately, the mindset that many blasters have adopted has hindered the development and use of more effective techniques and in many cases can actually be counter productive to vibration control.

Elemental sulfur was stockpiled at the Mount Polley Mine for use as a source of sulfuric acid as part of research into leaching copper from oxide ores, but the project did not proceed beyond an initial pilot- scale evaluation. Since placement, the sulfur has oxidized and some sulfuric acid leached into the underlying rock. The reaction of the acid with these underlying materials has been studied as part of an evaluation of the effects of leachate from the pile. The rock underneath the sulfur pile is composed dominantly of primary and secondary alumino-silicates with less than 1% carbonate (calcite) and iron sulfide (pyrite). In its unaltered condition, the rock is classified as non-acid generating. Conceptually, it was expected the sulfuric acid would be neutralized by the rock to varying degrees resulting in a series of pH-controlled weathering fronts progressing from leached near the contact with the sulfur pile (pH <3), to active neutralization by silicates (pH 4–5), to active neutralization by carbonates (pH >7). The rocks underneath the pile were sampled to determine the extent to which the rocks had reacted and their long-term stability after removal of the acid source. INTRODUCTION When rock is blasted and excavated to facilitate mining ore, it is typically placed and stored on the surface in piles. The resulting drainage may have a neutral to basic pH (i.e., non-acidic drainage) or a low pH (i.e., acid rock drainage, ARD) depending on the mineralogy of the rock being stored in the piles. Acid- base accounting (ABA) can be used to characterise the two types of rock: potentially acidic drainage generating (PAG) and not potentially acidic drainage generating (NAG) (Price, 2009). According to Price (2009), NAG is defined as having an excess of neutralization potential (NP) in the rock in the form of calcium carbonate-like minerals when compared to acid potential (AP), i.e., a Neutralization Potential Ratio (NP/AP = NPR) greater than 2.0, whereas PAG is classified as having an excess of AP (i.e., an NPR less than 1.0). This is a conservative estimate and may be slightly modified depending on the mineralogy at specific mine sites. Rock with an NPR of 1–2 is also capable of generating acid (Price, 2009) and, depending on the mineralogy, may also be classified as PAG. Drainage from PAG material can generate acid immediately, or many years after it has been exposed to surface conditions. Disposal techniques depend on the category (i.e., NAG or PAG) and reactivity of the rock stored in the piles.

FEW phase diagrams of alloys composed of two transition metals have been adequately studied, probably because of the high melting points involved. Transition metals are the elements that have inner shells incompletely filled with electrons. They comprise groups IIIa to Villa of the periodic table, including more than half of all metals. We have chosen to study two systems whose comparatively low melting points allowed the alloys to be melted in a molybdenum resistance furnace. The nickel-palladium system proved to consist of a simple series of solid solutions, but iron-palladium manifested several remarkable features. The main characteristics of the latter diagram were decisively established, but lack of time prevented precise determination of phase boundaries. The gamma to alpha transformation in this system is unusual and warrants further study. Grigorjew1 determined the liquidus and solidus of the iron-palladium system by thermal methods. He found a minimum melting point, but no eutectic. He also found that palladium lowered the gamma to alpha and raised the gamma to delta transformation temperatures of iron, with a complete series of solid solutions existing between gamma iron and palladium. His measurements also indicated a compound or super-lattice near the composition FePd3. Jellinghaus2 found that annealing at 500° C. greatly increased the magnetic coercive force of an alloy of composition FePd. X-ray dif-fraction photographs showed that a tetragonal ordered phase had formed during the anneal.

Provide d comprehensive source of up-to-date information about technology for revegetating coal mined lands. Approach A great deal of activity and research in the field of coal mine revegetation has been reported in technical literature, both before and after the passage of Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Ruclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). This information is widely scattered throughout books, scientific journals, periodicals, Government reports, and other sources, and there has been a need to develop a method of accessing it quickly and efficiently. At the request of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement which promulgates and enforces regulations implementing the act, the Bureau of Mines has prepared a document that identifies literature relevant to coal mine revegetation. Most of the literature available on this subject has been published during the past 15 years. To tap this reservoir of information, 14 data bases were accessed from DIALOG SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information) Service using three keyword combinations (surface mining and reclamation, strip mining and reclamation, and revegetation). This procedure generated over 7,000 listings. The U.S. Department of Energy&apos;s ENERGY data base was selected from the 14 DIALOG bases, both for its large number of listings and for its broad coverage of literature. This data base contains all the unclassified information that passes through the Technical Information Center of the Department of Energy, including reports, journal articles, conferences, patents, books, monographs, theses, and engineering materials relating to energy development.

The Alligator Ridge gold deposits are located in northwest White Pine County at the southwest end of Alligator Ridge. Alligator Ridge is on the west side of Long Valley in the range of hills that separates Long and Newark valleys. The nearest population center is Ely, about 113 km (70 miles) to the southeast. Access to the Alligator Ridge gold mine from Ely is via US Highway 50 and the Long Valley Ruby Marsh Road. The latitude and longitude is approximately 39° 45&apos; north and 116° 30&apos; west. The Alligator Ridge gold deposits occur in the lower 61 m (200 ft) of the Mississippian-Devonian Pilot Shale formation, a laminated calcareous carbonaceous siltstone. The gold deposits contain carbonaceous, oxide, and jasperoid type gold ore. For more details on the geologic features of the deposits, see Schull, Sutherland, and Ilchik (in press). The discovery story of Alligator Ridge began in the spring of 1976 when the areas mapped as jasperoid on the 1:250,000 scale geologic map of White Pine County (Hose and Blake, 1976) were examined and sampled. Seventeen samples, about 23 kg (50 lb), were collected from an area about 0.65 km2 (0.25 sq mile). Of these 17 samples 10 reported atomic absorption values of less than 0. 1 ppm Au and 7 reported values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm Au range. In June of 1976 20 lode claims were staked to claim the area of the rock chip sampling. The claims&apos; end and side center lines were used as a grid for soil sampling. Sample stations were 91 m (300 ft) apart and sample lines were 229 m (750 ft) apart. The samples were sieved to - 180 µm (- 80 mesh). Out of 99 soil samples, seven samples reported Au values in the 0.1 to 1.0 ppm range. Of the seven auriferous samples, five were located over the jasperoid outcrops previously sampled; one over unmineralized Pilot Shale a few hundred m (ft) downslope from some Au-bearing jasperoid; and one from a 15 x 15 m (50 x 50 ft) talus outcrop area of hitherto unnoticed mineralized Pilot Shale. Subsequent sampling, mapping and drilling would show that this 15 X 15 m (50 x 50 ft) outcrop area was the top of the Vantage 1 ore body, about 1.27 Mt (1,400,000 st) of over 3 g/0.9 t (0.11 oz/st) Au. Late in the summer of 1976 about 30 more 1.4 to 2.2 kg (3 to 5 lb) rock chip samples were collected in the course of preliminary geologic mapping. This mapping and sampling showed that the gold-bearing jasperoids occurred at the contact between the Pilot Shale and the underlying Devils Gate Limestone. Rock chip samples of 0.1 ppm Au or greater were restricted to the jasperoids and the mineralized outcrop area of Pilot Shale located by the soil sample survey. Rock chip samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale were in the 3 to 5 ppm Au range. Activity resumed in the summer of 1977 with a more detailed soil geochemical survey. The jasperoid areas were defined as large geochemical gold anomalies of values greater than 0.1 ppm and locally greater than 0.2 ppm Au. Soil samples from the area of mineralized Pilot Shale outlined a greater than 0.1 ppm gold anomaly 61 x 152 m (200 x 500 ft) in size. Further geologic mapping showed that elsewhere, even where bleached and silicified, the Pilot Shale areas were geochemically very low in gold (less than 0.1 ppm Au). In November, 1977 twelve rotary percussion drill holes were drilled to test the gold-bearing jasperoid areas and the mineralized Pilot Shale area. Drilling of the jasperoid areas showed that the jasperoids gave way at shallow depths [less than 24 m (80 ft)] to unmineralized unaltered Devils Gate Limestone. Gold cyanide equilibrium adsorption isotherms in the loading range typical of operating carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach plants have been established and the effect of various cations and the presence of copper cyanide species quantified. It was found that the equilibrium loading of gold was enhanced by the presence of sodium or calcium, with calcium having an order of magnitude stronger effect. The presence of copper has an adverse effect on the equilibrium loading of gold. A unified model was developed to predict the effect of sodium and calcium concentrations in solution and the competitive carbon adsorption of copper on the equilibrium loading of gold on carbon. A satisfactory agreement between the measured gold equilibrium loadings and the model results was obtained over a wide range of solution conditions.

The April 13, 1992, flooding in the freight tunnel network under the city of Chicago had a profound effect on the nearby Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) subway service. This paper provides an overview of the evaluation techniques, mitigation measures, and water control efforts used to maintain the integrity of the subway tubes. Specific topics discussed include visual inspections, inflow monitoring, structure and soil testing and sampling techniques, and the development and implementation of chemical and cementitious grouting programs.

SHORTLY after Ambrose Swasey suggested the creation of the Engineering Foundation in 1914, the World War broke. upon the scene. Consequently all eyes were soon turned to national security problems. In 1916 the newly-organized Engineering Foundation and the four National Societies joined with the National Academy of Sciences in establishing the National Research Council. From then until 1923 the Engineering Foundation devoted the greater part of its resources to the support of the Research Council and the Council&apos;s division of engineering. Since 1923, how-ever, it has turned to the original intention for which it was created, of cooperating with the national societies in proj-ects affecting engineering at large, though it still retains a connection with the Research Council. Mere enumeration and tabulation of work undertaken can of course lend but a vague idea of actual accomplish-ments. The reports of the Foundation give information of its widespread activities.

In the spring of 1967, after a careful study of existing geology along the Pacific Coast including Alaska, the USBM, in conjunction with the USGS, decided that the offshore area around Nome, Alaska, presented an unparalleled land-to-sea comparison site for the evaluation of marine core drilling techniques and sampling equipment. Considering the geological evidence available and the production history of the Nome Beaches (5-6 million oz. of gold recovered), it appeared likely that gold in commercial quantities could occur in the offshore area. A 180 sq mi area of Norton Sound, extending roughly 14 miles to the east and west of Nome and averaging 6 miles to the south, was tested by approximately 530 line-miles of sub-bottom profiling. A total of 4043 ft (56 holes) were drilled in unconsolidated sediments, yielding mixtures of gravel, sand, silt and clay. Of the total holes drilled, 16 went to bedrock and six were terminated short of their intended depths due to boulders which halted penetration, or rough seas which caused the ship to move as the anchors slipped over hard sea-floor surface. The rest of the holes were terminated when the penetrative capabilities of the drills were reached, or when the required amount of geological data were attained.
