It briefly describes the pertinent geological features as they relate to mining and the practical de-stressing techniques used to allow productive extraction in the high stress environment present in many of the province’s mines. Mining layouts, materials handling, and the evolution of some of the world's largest mining equipment are examined.

"Next to the actual mine of Les Explorations Muscocho Ltée in Montauban, Quebéc, you could find a total of 364 000 tons of flotation tailings assaying 1.4 Au g/t et 82 g Ag/t to the south of the municipality. This tailings pile is what is left of previous operations. Preliminary leaching tests on these tailings in laboratory columns gave interesting results which led to tests in larger columns in 1984 and to a pilot test on a 750 ton heap in Montauban during the summer of 1985.This paper briefly describes the columns tests performed at the Centre de Recherches minérales and the heap leaching test designed and conducted by SOQUEM in Montauban. Because of the high economic value associated with small improvements in the operating performance of mineral processing plants, innovations in instrumentation, stabilization and expert control systems have been an ever-present part of the landscape in plants throughout the world since the I 960s. Expert control systems are computer programs that continuously monitor plant conditions; contain "expert knowledge" concerning the process, equipment and operational knowledge; and make timely recommendations for new process set points or even directly change the process set points to achieve desired management goals. Early rudimentary expert control systems first appeared in the early 1970s. They have grown from small, experimental but ambitious projects in which single unit operations were controlled to plant-wide systems that include technologies used in the U.S. space shuttle program. Experiences and results of applying these systems throughout the world will be explained discussed and analyzed. Typical results will be outlined and the use of expert control in the future will be projected.

Background of Ocean Mining Research Inspired by the 1970?s deep seabed mining activities of other nations, China started ocean mining research work within the framework of the International Law of the Sea Treaty (UNCLOS) and the subsequent establishment of the International Seabed Authority in the 1990?s. This work has been carried out mainly with the cooperation of the Changsha Research Institute of Mining And Metallurgy. We have been committed to this work to fulfill our responsibilities and obligations as a Pioneer investor under UNCLOS and also to support the much needed development of deep-sea technology in China. Exciting recent advances by Nautilus Minerals in the development of seafloor massive sulfide deposit exploitation has led us to a new perspective of ocean mining and some re-evaluation of ocean mining economics. This has provided us with an opportunity to support more efforts in ocean mining research. We will not delay the development of our ocean mining system and corresponding technology, although commercial mining in the deep-sea area may not occur for many years.

PHYSICAL properties have been used for a long time in characterizing different kinds of coal, and physical properties, such as friability and slacking, have been included with chemical properties in grouping coals according to the widely used system of classification adopted by the U. S. Geological Survey. Nevertheless, the usefulness of physical properties for classifying the different ranks or kinds of coal has been limited because it has not been possible to express these properties in definite form as numerical values. Because of the present wide interest in the formulation and adoption of a satisfactory system of coal classification, the Northwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington, has recently completed a study of the physical and chemical properties of approximately 100 different coals ranging from lignite to, anthracite. PURPOSE AND SCOPE For this investigation samples were collected in approximately 45 mines and prospects in Washington and 23 mines in other states. The following studies, in addition to proximate and ultimate analyses, were made of the samples: Determination of (1) friability, (2) slacking or weathering characteristics, (3) yield of products by low-temperature carbonization in a laboratory retort, and (4) agglutinating value. Most of the coals examined were subjected to each of the tests enumerated, but with coal of some ranks this was unnecessary in some instances, and in others it was not feasible to do the work involved.

In 1978, Anschutz Mining Corp. began efforts to develop the Madison Cobalt Project in southeast Missouri. Preliminary metallurgical studies indicated that intermediate grade cobalt products, suitable for shipment to existing refineries, could be recovered from the sulfide mineralization of the ore body. However, tolling and freight charges were significant, as the refineries were located outside the US. These refineries would not satisfy the goal of strategically insulated production of superalloy-grade cobalt. The acquisition of proven, readily available refinery technologies was then evaluated. However, licensing costs were substantial and the "proven" technologies were not directly applicable to the unique chemistry of Madison materials. Faced with these challenges, Anschutz, in conjunction with the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute, embarked on an effort to develop a sulfate-based separation and refining process. CSMRI performed bench-scale and continuous pilot experiments on solutions generated through other pilot campaigns conducted by Lurgi, Hazen Research, and Sherritt Gordon. The results indicated that cobalt could be selectively extracted from sulfate media using a new generation of organophosphates. The solvent extraction system produced a solution suitable for electrolysis of high-purity cobalt. Preliminary cost studies indicated the novel process was competitive with other refinery systems. Plans to develop the detailed engineering-design information required to commercialize the process were abandoned when the price of cobalt collapsed to less than $17.64/kg ($8.00 per lb).

EMF measurements were performed in the temperature range of 933-1095 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead and lead-tin alloys with tin in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 6 atom per cent. The oxygen in the Pb-O system was varied by equilibrating with (PbO) slag, and that in the Pb-O-Sn system was varied with the addition of lead oxide. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to evaluate the self interaction parameter and ternary interaction parameters at different temperatures, to yield: E8(pb) = 97.35 - 113.27 x 103/t Eo(pb) = 139 - 20.616 x104/1' Quasichemical formulation was employed to yield Inf to reveal the effect of tin on oxygen in lead. Results have been predicted on the basis of classical models and those obtained using the QCT approach of Alcock and Richardson at Z=2 have been found to agree with the experimental Data.

The discovery of tungsten-bearing quartz outcrop- pings in Vance County, N. C., by the Hamme brothers in 1942, made international news in the mining industry and was, in fact, one of the major ore discoveries made in the U.S. during the last 25 years. Operations began at the Hamme mine in 1942, but after 16 years of successful operation, the mine was closed down in 1958 under adverse market conditions. By that time, it had produced nearly 20 million lbs of metallic tungsten. Because of the square-set timber mining method then in use, mine operating expenses were high, actually representing 78% of the total operating expenses at the property. In timber work alone, 160 men were employed. Approximately 500,000 bd ft of timber were placed monthly at a direct supply cost of $1.00 per ton of ore mined.

After extensive testing and a period of plant trials to establish the benefits of Caro's acid (H2S05) as an alternative oxidant, Queensland Mines Limited (QML) decided to replace pyrolusite with Caro's acid in its acid leach uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek. The decision was based on the reagent savings and environmental gains associated with the removal of manganese from the process liquors, as well as the labour savings and improved oxidation reduction potential control possible in leaching using the Caro's acid system. The permanent Caro's acid generating plant was designed by Interox Chemicals Pty Ltd of Australia (IC) to suit QML's require- ments and differed from the unit used during the plant trials. Commissioning of the plant was completed in April 1983 and it has been continuously used since that date.

Little drilling has been done in Kentucky and Tennessee in 1923, with the exception of the Kettle Creek area on the Kentucky-Tennessee line. Oil prices fluctuated between $2.86 and $1.36 Per bbl. for light oil. The Kentucky production was slightly over 8,000,000 bbl., being 1,000,000 bbl. less than during 1922. Tennessee production was approximately 8500 bbl., being a decrease of 1000 bbl, over. 1922. During 1923, the first producing well was brought in, in Clay County, Tenn. Production in Tennessee will undoubtedly increase considerably in 1924, and Kentucky production will probably increase slightly. THE year 1923 has been a dull period in oil development in Kentucky and Tennessee, with the exception of the Kettle Creek area along the Tennessee-Kentucky line, in Clinton and Cumberland Counties, Kentucky, and Clay County, Tennessee. The price of oil during the year has been so low that wildcatters have shown little interest in drilling. At the beginning of the year, light oil sold for $2.31 per barrel and medium oil for $2.06 per, barrel. Prices increased to the highest point for the year in February, when light oil brought $2.86 per barrel and medium oil, $2.61. In April, prices had declined 35 c. while in May an additional decline of 25 c. went into effect. During June, prices declined 20 c. per barrel; during July, 45 c. per barrel; remained stationary during August and September, and dropped during November and December to the low price of $1.36 per barrel for light and $1.21 for medium oil. At present, an increase of 29 c. has brought the price of light oil up to $1.55, and indications are that the price will continue to increase during the coming months. It can readily be seen that during 1923 the price of oil was such as to prevent any drilling except that necessary to hold leases and to maintain production enough to take care of overhead expenses.

Biodiversity assessments that are developed in different stages of a mining project, have different objectives that define the methodology to be used in each of these stages. In this way, we define two stages of a project: 1) the time at which assesses the state of biodiversity or biological components, before any intervention in the project area, previously defining the area of direct influence and indirect influence of the project for each biological group to be evaluated and 2) the time when certain groups or biological, are monitored during the developmental stages of the project with you to obtain information about the level impact they may have, for project activities. It discusses the methodological differences that must be used in both biodiversity assessments: to develop biological baselines and in those assessments aimed at monitoring different components of biodiversity.

Factors such as rock cover, rock type and rock quality can exert a dominate influence on the behavior of a concrete tunnel lining. This paper will present and discuss the investigation, evaluation and use of such factors at the Rocky Mountain Pumped Storage Project in the design of the 10.67m (35 foot) diameter concrete tunnel lining. A plane strain, finite element analysis was performed on the concrete/rock system. The finite element model consisted of a concrete lining zone and three (3) rock zones; a highly destressed rock zone, a transitional rock zone and an intact rock zone. Zones were differentiated from one another by varying the modulus for each zone. Results of this study yielded a concrete lining strain from radial expansion which was used in the crack control calculations for the concrete tunnel lining. After the tunnel excavation was performed, plate jacking tests and additional seismic surveys were run on the tunnel walls. This testing served to confirm the rock modulus values used in the preliminary analysis. However, results were observed which indicated that a two zone rock model would more accurately represent in-situ rock conditions than the three-zone rock model used in the preliminary analysis. This revision to the concrete/rock model was made and a final concrete tunnel lining analysis was performed.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines evaluation which examined the extent of gas leakage from sealed areas in underground coal mines and measured the effectiveness of commonly used structures for controlling the quantity of gas exchange from these areas. Evaluations were performed on five abandoned areas in two operating underground mines within the same coal seam. Methane and oxygen levels inby the seals were monitored to determine if the gas leakage was unidirectional or bidirectional. Results from this and prior work dealing with minimizing gas leakage were then applied to a newly abandoned area. Also discussed are bulkhead site preparation, construction plans, techniques for monitoring the status of the atmosphere within the sealed volume, and a modified European method for controlling gas migration from the sealed volume to the active mine.

Monitoring of water infiltration into WhiteÆs waste rock dump at the Rum Jungle mine site in the Northern Territory, Australia, started in 1983, and has since produced a unique and long-running data set. Following closure of the uranium mining operations at the site, a soil cover was constructed on the dump in 1984 primarily to reduce water infiltration into, and the quantity of low quality effluent out of, the waste material. The performance of the cover in reducing water infiltration has been monitored using ten lysimeters installed across the dump prior to construction of the cover. Over the past eight years or so, the average infiltration rate as measured by the ten lysimeters appears to have risen compared to the early years of monitoring. The significance of this apparent increase is discussed given the variability observed in the data from individual lysimeters, and the variability in the rainfall. Estimates of the infiltration rate as measured by each of the lysimeters are examined using statistical tools. It is concluded that the infiltration rate has increased with time and with increasing rainfall. The increase with time is a stronger factor than the increase with rainfall. It is further surmised that the cover system at the locations of the lysimeters is less effective now at reducing infiltration into the dump than it was when newly installed.

This is a contribution for the proposed new discussion on the physics of steel. The former discussion on the subject started with the consideration of five papers presented at the Chicago meeting in 1893, and continued for several years. The Suggested Lines of Discussion, prepared by Doctor Howe, covered a wide field and added greatly to the success of the work. Naturally, the first step in a new discussion will be to remodel and bring up to date the old Suggested Lines of Discussion so as to embody all the important advances in the metallurgy of steel that have a bearing on the physics of steel and keep the papers and discussions within the field of work undertaken. This paper will be devoted to the practical application, in rolling steel, of the effects of carbon, phosphorus, and manganese on its tensile strength, with some suggestions on further research work. Dr. J. E. Stead, in his paper Influence of Some Elements on the Mechanical Properties of Steel,' gave a complete review of all that had been done during the past thirty years. He gave full credit to all investigators who worked on these lines, also their results, with his views on same, and in many cases his own results. All of this data and much new valuable information were put in convenient shape for reference and study. To do this required a great deal of work, which is fully appreciated by the steel manufacturers and investigators. The variations in the values given by the different investigators for the increase of the tensile strength of steel for each 0.01 per cent. of carbon, phosphorus, and manganese were largely due to the steels they worked on, the large or small variations in the amount of the elcments present, and the omission to take into consideration all the factors, from the blast furnace through to finished rolled material, that affect the character of the steel. For instance, a poorly made dirty steel requires considerably more carbon to give the same ultimate strength than a well-made clean steel with the same phosphorus and manganese content.

The West Edmond pool of Central Oklahoma, a limestone reservoir, has an area in excess of 29,000 acres and as of Sept. 15, 1946, had produced 53 million barrels of oil from 731 wells at an average depth of 6900 ft. Water has encroached into the reservoir along the west side of the pool and although the area of water invasion is large the net volume of water influx is small, because encroachment has been primarily into a fracture system. The most significant part of this study concerns the character of the Hunton reservoir. Geological study of cores of the producing section was made to supplement core-analysis data. It was determined that approximately 90 pct of the pore volume was contained in intergranular or sand-like porosity and 10 pct in fractures (intermediate porosity). The porous limestone is divided into blocks by the fractures, although in the strongly dolomitic parts of the producing section, fractures are less well developed. The low-permeability intergranular porosity, largely subsidiary to the high-permeability fractures, will produce oil into the fractures by evolution of solution gas. The fractures in effect serve as drainage channels for production of oil from the inter-granular porosity. Because of such a large difference in permeabilities of the two com-ponents, a high degree of by-passing will occur, and, accordingly, the economics involved in undertaking full-scale high pressure gas injection operations have been seriously questioned. Introduction The West Edmond Hunton pool, which covers portions of Canadian, Logan, Oklahoma, and Kingfisher Counties in Central Oklahoma, is the largest reservoir producing oil from a limestone in the state. The total area of the pool comprises about 29,240 acres and development is considered to be essentially complete. In all, 731 producing wells have been completed in the Hunton reservoir at an average depth of approximately 6900 ft, and have yielded a cumulative oil production in excess of 53 million barrels as of Sept. 15, 1946. In addition to wells completed in the Hunton limestone, 21 wells have been completed in the Bartlesville sand at a depth of approximately 6500 ft, which have produced a total of 730,000 bbl of oil. One small producer has been completed in the Cleveland sand at a depth of 5700 ft. However, a study of only the Hunton limestone reservoir will be presented in this paper. The most significant phase of this study concerns the special type of geological core examination that was made in an effort to ascertain the type and degree of porosity in the rock in accordance with lithologic types. Results of this geological study showed the west Edmond pool to be of such a complex nature as to appreciably affect the behavior normally associated with homogeneous reservoirs. It is not known when silica sand was first noticed along the north coast of Puerto Rico, but the first mention of its occurrence was made in 1922, by N. L. Britton,1 who described its presence in isolated patches extending from Loiza westward beyond Manati. Further observations were made in 1925 and 1926 by Meyerhoff,2 who extended the known occurrences still farther westward to the low hill belt in the Quebradillas limestone immediately south of Hatillo. The extraordinary purity of the sands, which in most localities exhibit no contamination from the non-siliceous materials surrounding them, was quickly appreciated, and the feasibility of utilizing them for the manufacture of glass was investigated, initially by the Committee on Mineral Resources3 and later (1936) by the Puerto Rico Recon-structionAdministration and by H. C. Ray, mining engineer of the Insular Bureau of Mines. In 1934 samples submitted to the Hazel Atlas Glass Co., of Washington, Pennsylvania, were reported to have the composition as shown in the table on column two. Appreciation of the quality of the sand prompted geological and quantitative studies of the deposits, as well as cornmercial investigations to determine the feasibility of utilizing it locally or on the mainland for the manufacture of glass containers. Distribution of the Sands The quartz sands consistently lie within the outcrop area of the Quebradillas limestone, the youngest of the Miocene formations in the Tertiary coastal plain that fringes the northern coast of the Island. Many of the deposits are closely associated with limestone outcrops, but some appear to be embedded in lagoonal sediments at some distance from rock exposures, and at least one deposit, near Dorado, has been reworked by waves and littoral currents. With this single known exception, the deposits consist of irregular, patternless patches of white sand, which have sharply defined contacts with the surrounding material. Although patches of sand are present in a 90-km. belt that is not more than 5 km. wide, extending from Loiza to Hatillo, they attain maximum size, purity and number in the north central coastal area between Dorado and Barceloneta. Fifty separate deposits have been mapped in Lago Tortuguero and to the south of it, some as small as 50 ft. in diameter but
