Oxy-ACETYLENE system of welding and cutting is at present practised in two forms, which may be described as the high and lowpressure systems. In the high-pressure system the two gases, oxygen and acetylene, are delivered. to the blow-pipe under pressure from properly constructed trade cylinders. Oxygen cylinders are in two sizes, each containing 100 and 200 cub. ft. of gas respectively. These cylinders are charged to a pressure of 120 atmospheres, or 1800 lb. per sq. in. approximately. The acetylene cylinders are made in one size as far as the writer knows, and contain 200 cub. ft. of acetylene gas at a pressure of 10 atmospheres. Each cylinder is provided with a valve and connection for attaching a regulator to "break down" the high pressure in the cylinders to the necessary low working pressure of the blow-pipes, and to deliver the two gases at a constant pressure irrespective of the variable pressures in the cylinders. These regulators can be adjusted down to as low as 1 lb. and are provided with two pressure gaugesone reading the contents of the cylinder in atmospheres, and the other the working pressure in lb. per sq. in. The high-pressure, or "two cylinder" system is compact and can readily be transported from place to place in the works. For this purpose the two cylinders are mounted on an easy-running 4-wheeled truck, which the operator and assistant find no difficulty in manipulating. In the low-pressure system the two gases are delivered to the blow-pipe, one from the oxygen cylinder and the other from the acetylene gas generating plant, which consists of the following:Generating cylinder, half filled with water, into which the cathoide is plunged. Over 80% of roof falls in Illinois coal mines occur at intersections. Regular intersection geometries with sharp corners have been typically analyzed in literature. This study has analyzed stress distribution around typical field 4-way intersection geometry and compared it with similar data for regular four-way intersection geometry. These analyses were performed using 3-D numerical analyses for a typical lithology associated with No 6 coal seam in southern Illinois. Linear elastic and non-linear analyses, using Hoek-Brown failure criteria for different lithological units, were performed. The 3-D models incorporated bedding planes and pre-mining horizontal stresses. Effect of diagonal widths of the intersection and pre-mining horizontal stresses were examined due to their influence on stability. In addition to stress distribution, contours of safety factors, and displacement analyses were performed to assess stability of intersections.

Solid solution alloying increases the plastic properties of aluminum at elevated temperatures by solid solution strengthening, by restraining recovery and recrystallization, and by a Cottrell effect. When binary aluminum alloys are strained and aged at 1940° to 300°K they develop a yield point. This is attributed to a migration of dislocations to solute atoms during aging. IN view of the ever expanding interest in applications of metals and alloys to high temperature service conditions, it becomes increasingly important to be cognizant of the effect of various metallurgical factors on the strength of alloys at elevated temperatures. One problem of wide interest, not only because of its engineering significance but also due to its fundamental scientific importance, is the elucidation of the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of homogeneous a solid solutions at elevated temperatures. It is indeed astonishing to note that in spite of its importance, and in spite of extensive random testing of alloys at elevated temperatures, no systematic investigation has been reported yet on the effect of alloying additions on the plastic properties of a solid solutions at elevated temperatures. This deficiency in our knowledge prompted the investigation described in this report. Rather extensive data are currently available on the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of a solid solutions at atmospheric and sub-atmospheric temperatures. Such data might be ex- trapolated to higher temperatures and reasonable guesses might be made regarding the influence of such factors as recovery and recrystallization in order to hazard a qualitative estimate of the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of a solid solutions at elevated temperatures. The life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach can be an important tool for the quantification and evaluation of environmental impacts associated with metal production systems. At the conceptual phase of a new metals development project, LCA can: ? Aid project decision making by evaluating the environmental consequences of design decisions ? Support project permitting and reinforce site/process environmental impact assessment ? Allow environmental impact comparisons between alternate flow sheets For existing metals production systems, LCA has been used to aid targeted process improvements by monitoring recent historical trends in environmental performance, either through local or external (externalities) process improvements. This paper discusses the life- cycle assessment methodology, and its application as a supportive tool for environmental decision-making in process design and operation, and for site environmental impact assessment and permitting. Selected examples from a recent LCA performed on the Pressure Acid Leach Process for treating nickel Laterite ores are employed to demonstrate the usefulness of the tool.

TWO intermediate phases enter into equilibrium with the primary solid solutions of titanium.' The TiMn2 phase was identified by Wallbaum2 as of the C14 type isomorphous with MgZn2. Contrary to Maykuth, et al.,¹ the phase occuring at about the 50-50 atomic proportion has been shown to derive from a peritectoid reaction.:' A 30 day anneal at 900°C of an alloy containing 52 wt pct Mn developed sufficient of the new phase to give a clear and predominant diffraction pattern. The powder pattern was taken in a 14 cm diameter powder camera using filtered Cu Ka radiation. In all, 75 lines were recognized and measured. Interplanar spacing and observed intensities for the first 26 of these are given in Table I.

Controlled-blasting experiments in small development drifts were conducted at CANMET's Experimental Mine in 1992 and 1993. The objective of these experiments was to develop suitable controlled-blasting techniques for small development headings that are drilled by jackleg with 32-mm-diam holes. The experimentation was also aimed at providing insight into blast-damage mechanisms. Particular attention was given to the physical-mechanical properties of the rock and the rock-mass structural data. The drift faces were approximately 2.4 by 2.4 m (7.9 x 7.9 ft) in size with 36 to 43 holes drilled to a depth of 2.4 m (7.9 ft). Cartridged water gels, emulsions and semigelatin dynamite were used in the cuts and as primers, ANFO was used as the main explosive and decoupled 19-mm (0.75 in.) diam semigelatin dynamite charges were used in the perimeter holes. Smooth-blasting techniques and presplitting were tested in the underground mine. All of the blasts were monitored with a multichannel blast-vibration monitor, to which was attached sets of high frequency geophones and accelerometers. These experiments demonstrated the efficiency of controlled-blasting techniques for the reduction of blast damage and also demonstrated the need to improve the safety and efficiency of using explosives.

In Australia, coal mines have generally not adopted filling to increase mining recovery. The aim of this project, entitled æImproved recovery in highwall mining using backfillÆ, was to examine the feasibility of using fill to improve recovery in highwall mining. Current fill practice was reviewed for metalliferous as well as coal mining, both here in Australia and overseas, for its applicability to highwall mining. Studies were then made at a conceptual level to determine whether fill could be economically used, to determine appropriate sources for fill and to trial key aspects of fill behaviour. A review of filling methods led to conceptual studies being undertaken on seven filling methods and these studies demonstrated that fill could be used to improve recovery. These studies were then further refined. Selected filling materials have been reviewed and laboratory tests have been made on these to assess their suitability.

One of the primary interests of the United States Department of Energy's Mine Planning Division is to fully develop avenues of technical research which potentially offer positive effects on coal mine productivity. One such area of research involves the removal of methane gas from unmined portions of coalbeds through vertical wells drilled from surface locations. As coalbed methane content is reduced, less gas is available for flow into the mine, and consequently ventilation requirements are decreased and/or coal extraction rates increase. Another attractive aspect of the vertical borehole drainage method is that it presents an opportunity to recover and utilize significant quantities of methane gas, which would otherwise be wasted to the atmosphere. The viability of removing gas from the Mary Lee coalbed using stimulated vertical boreholes was first suggested by Elder and Deul as a result of a United States Bureau of Mines' drilling project conducted from 1971 to 1974 (4). Other United States Bureau of Mines' studies forecasted that degasification would eventually be necessary in the Mary Lee coalbed because most new or expanding mine development would take place at depths exceeding 1 000 feet (305 meters), where the methane problem would be severe (3) (13). In 1975 a large-scaled drilling program was designed in order to supply industry's anticipated need for a degasification technology in the Warrior coal basin, Alabama. The results of this government/industry sponsored effort were to be specifically applicable to the Mary Lee coalbed, the most extensive and economically important deep minable coal present in the area. Major technical objectives of this program are twofold: (1) to measure the effects of various well completion designs, particularly hydraulic stimulation, on mining and (2) to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates. A cooperative agreement was established with United States Steel Corporation in late 1975 and field work began shortly thereafter in the proximity of a newly developing mine near Oak Grove, Alabama. Government responsibility for this program was transferred from the United States Bureau of Mines to the United States Department of Energy in October 1977. To date, as a result of this program, twenty-one wells have been completed into the Mary Lee coalbed at the Oak Grove site. Seventeen of these wells were drilled on an experimental grid pattern located two miles from the active mine. These grid wells are primarily being used to generate data necessary to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates and will also provide a large amount of information regarding the long-term effects of degasification on mining. The four remaining wells (designated Ton through TW4) were placed near the mine so that the full effects of completion could be studied within the short time required for underground interception. Results gathered from the first two test wells (TW1 and TW2) have been reported in detail (10) and indicated that several improvements were necessary to increase gas drainage rates. Hydraulic stimulation was one of the most important aspects of well design that required improvement. Nitrogen-charged foam stimulation treatment was used at TW3 and TW4 instead of the gelled-fluid type stimulation used at the first two near-mine test wells.

In this paper, effects of different ageing treatments on the mechanical properties, microstructure and formability of 7075 aluminum alloy have been studied. Forming limit diagrams of the alloy have been obtained for four ageing conditions including T6, OA1, OA2 and O. For this purpose, combination of uniaxial tensile tests and the Erichsen cupping tests with different sizes and shapes of sheet specimens have been performed after each ageing treatment. The highest formability and the lowest formability have been observed at samples with O and T6 ageing treatments, respectively. Also, investigation of precipitated microstructures showed that the size of precipitation particles has a significant effect on the formability of the alloy. Formability improves with coarsening of precipitation particles.

An extensive testwork was performed around the HPGR plant at GoldFields Ghana Limited Tarkwa Gold Mine. The HPGR was used to prepare the feed for heap leaching. The circuit was configured in such a way that the edge material from the HPGR discharge was recycled for further crushing while the product from the centre reported to the heap leach section. The set-up of the Polysius HPGR provided an opportunity to study the effect of different design and operating variables. This paper will discuss the results from the tests performed to assess the effect of rolls’ speed and applied pressure on the capacity and the grinding efficiency of the HPGR. Applying different pressure values appeared to have an influence on the amount of edge material recycled.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are developing a coal pillar rib rating (CPRR) technique to measure the integrity of coal ribs. The CPRR characterizes the rib composition and evaluates its impact on the inherent stability of the coal ribs. The CPRR utilizes four parameters: rib homogeneity, bedding condition, face cleat orientation with respect to entry direction, and rib height. All these parameters are measurable in the field. A rib data collecting procedure and a simple sheet to calculate the CPRR were developed.

In 1988, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied additional areas, encompassing 11,303 acres, on the east and west sides of the 20,727-acre Badlands study area (Olson, 1987) in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The Badlands study area additions are located in Crook and Deschutes Counties, OR, about 10 and 18 miles east of Bend, OR. No mineral resources were identified. The additional areas studied are underlain by Tertiary-and Quaternary-age basalt flows which are largely covered by a veneer of sand and silt. No mines, prospects, mining claims or mineralized areas occur within or near the Badlands study area additions. Slab lava of marketable grade and quantity was not found in either area. None of the study area is of current interest for geothermal resources, but the eastern study area addition has been leased (1984) for oil and gas.

Exploratory research was conducted to ascertain the feasibility of recovering beryllium from Spor Mountain, Utah, ore by the sodium fluosilicate (Na2SiF6) method used industrially for processing beryl. Na2SiF6 requirements to form water-soluble salts of beryllium were determined for three different samples--two clayey ores containing 0.6 and 1.3 pct BeO, respectively, and a calcareous ore containing 0.6 pct BeO. The ores were sintered with Na2SiF6 at 750° C for 3 hours. About 80 pct of the beryllium was rendered water soluble by sintering the 0.6-pct BeO ores with 30 and 40 lb Na2SiF6 per lb BeO contained in clayey and calcareous ores, respectively. The higher grade 1.3-pct BeO clayey ore required only 20 lb Na2SiF6 per lb BeO to solubilize over 80 pet of the beryllium. As the 0.6-pct BeO clayey ore was possibly the most representative of the deposit as presently delineated, leach liquor prepared from this sample was treated to recover beryllium salts. About 60 pet of the beryllium contained in the ore was recovered as beryllium hydroxide, which then was calcined to yield a 99-pct BeO final product by means of the following operations: (1) Sintering with Na2SiF2, (2) leaching with water, (3) precipitating crude Be(OH)2 by adding NaOH, (4) filtering to separate the hydroxide from the NaF solution, (5) redissolving the crude Be(OH)2 in excess NaOH, (6) filtering to reject caustic-insoluble impurities, and finally (7) boiling the Na2BeO2 filtrate from (8) to precipitate pure Be(OH)2. Reagent consumption was 49 lb Na2SiF6 per lb BeO recovered and 17 lb NaOH per lb BeO.

Since 1962, ferro alloy production in Australia has been concentrated at Bell Bay, Tasmania with a major expansion occurring in 1976. This concentration was based originally on the perceived requirements of the expanding Australian steel industry, but recent stagnation within this industry has seen Temco become progressively more export oriented.In 1984, approval was given for a $47 million uprating of facilities which will allow for the introduction of the latest technology to ensure high quality, low cost production in a highly competitive export market.
