A search through the available literature shows that the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has not been systematically studied. This seems rather odd because all three elements are fairly abundant and have better than average corrosion resistance; however, they have high melting points, which makes experimental work difficult. Cobalt and nickel form a continuous series of solid solutions and each metal dissolves about 7.5 per cent silicon. Many ternary alloys have been studied and the results have been published in a great many different ways, but to present such data in a short but clear and understandable manner is still a problem. The following pages describe the results of the study of 76 alloys from which the partial ternary diagram (Fig. 1) of the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has been drawn. The alloys were chosen according to the plan in Fig. la by taking definite ratios of cobalt and nickel, such as 70 Ni, 30 Co or 40 Ni, 60 Co, and adding silicon in various percentages. Each section was studied in detail by means of thermal analysis and microscopic examination, but only two of these detailed sections were thought necessary in the point perspective drawing to give a comprehensive picture of the liquidus, solidus and solid transformations that take place over the temperature ranges studied. Complete thermal analyses and microscopic data are given in Table 1. Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared from metals of commercial purity, as follows: electrolytic nickel 99.60 + 0.35 Co; chemically purified silicon 99.79 per cent plus impurities of Fe 0.027, A1 0.008, Ca 0.014, C 0.004, N² 0.10; and cobalt 98.82 per cent plus impurities of Ni 0.42, Fe 0.12, CaO 0.27, S 0.012, Mn 0.10 and SiO² 0.15. It should be noted that the largest impurity in cobalt is nickel, one of the alloying elements. The main purpose of this study was to design a modular/mobile coal preparation plant with a capacity of 300 t/h for Seyitömer B3 vein (almost 70% of the whole SLI deposit). Firstly, coal washing properties and washability curves were determined by sink and float tests. Then, equipment sizing, selection, flow sheet development, economic evaluation, investment and operating costs were determined for coarse (-150+18mm), fine (-18+0.5mm) and slime (-0.5+0.1mm) coals. Economic evaluation of the proposed flow sheet showed the feasibility and profitability of the investment.

To prove this, I need quote only two of his assertions, the italics being mine: "lt is a stern fundamental principle that a11 natural resources are the inalienable property of the crown.'' "The right to a claim should only exist as long as it is worked or taxed to insure work. Once depart from that sound maxim, there results improper control of the natural resources of the country, which primarily belong to the people." These assertions formed the basis of my criticism1 of Dr. Raymond's paper in 1913, and they should be inscribed in letters of gold above the entrance to the office of every county recorder in the United States. I venture to assert that the existing United States mineral land laws are essentially unfair to the nation and a hindrance to the legitimate miner, because they fail to embody the above quoted principlca; and this applies both to state laws east of the Mississippi and to federal laws in the West. That these laws favor the forestaller and the monopolist, defraud the government of its fair share of the profits of mineral production, and tend to industrial feudalism must be evident to any competent unbiassed observer. The fact that no serious political movement arose to change them, until the conservation agitation of the last decade, may be largely explained by two salient conditions. First, as stated by President Winchell, "for a long time there was such a vast surplus, or excessive amount of unwanted, undesirable land in the West that the land offices did not scrutinize the claim sought to be located;" second, that the millions of individual farm owners throughout the country could easily be aroused, by the special pleaders hired by the great land speculators and monopolists, to use their vast political power for the suppression of any statesmen striving to incorporate in our semi-feudal land laws any such principles as those quoted from Mr. Godson. The Climax Molybdenum Mine, located near Leadville, Colorado, is the site of a lengthy mining history spanning more than 80 years. In the 1960’s, extraction of molybdenum from oxide ore located adjacent to the massive molybdenite sulfide deposit resulted in the construction of an earthen core dam to impound fine-grained oxide tailing in the Eagle River Valley. Through recognized value of water storage and reclamation opportunities, a tailing removal project was initiated in 1993 to convert the impoundment facilities to a post-mining beneficial land use of developed water resources. An evaluation of the effect residual materials and lake dynamics would have on in-stream water quality was performed. Eagle Park Reservoir stands as a model for future reclamation efforts that involve water delivery to highly sensitive receiving waters. This paper provides a case study on project development, the evolution of water quality assessment, and the regulatory framework that contributed to this project’s success.

The recent increase in development of refractory gold deposits has resulted in changes to the traditional treatment processes. The selection of the preferred refractory treatment process is dependent on the mineralogy of the ore. One process, which has recently gained increasing attention, utilizes dry grinding and roasting of the whole ore. This paper will discuss some of the considerations to be addressed during the design of the process fl owsheet and what the effects of the various alternatives will be on the plant capital and operating costs. The paper will be based, in part, on current experiences with dry grinding, roasting plant design and start-up.

Sulfur concretes have been developed by the Bureau of Mines as construction materials with physical and mechanical properties that suit them for use in acid and salt corrosive environments where conventional concretes fail. Mixture design methods were established for preparing sulfur concretes using different types of aggregates and recently developed mixed-modified sulfur cements Bench-scale testing of the sulfur concretes has shown their potential value. Corrosion resistance, strength, and durability of sulfur concrete are superior to those of conventional materials. Field in situ evaluation tests of the sulfur concretes as replacement for conventional concrete materials are in progress in corrosive areas of 24 commercial chemical, fertilizer, and metallurgical plants.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the geology and physical properties of core samples at the Sunnyside coal mine No. 1, Sunnyside, Utah, and was written in conjunction with the Single-Entry Program conducted at the mine. The objective of this program was to test the hypothesis that the single-entry system in the Sunnyside mine, supported in the center by open cribs and divided by a fire-resistant partition, is equivalent to or better than a two-entry sys-tem. Drill cores, taken underground at 15 sites in the single-entry study area, facilitated the construction of geologic cross sections of the entries. Physical property data obtained from the drill cores was used in a three-dimensional finite element analysis program to evaluate the stability of the openings, the support requirements, and the de formation characteristics of the roof and floor material. Data on 10 physical property parameters for 5 rock types plus coal are also tabulated and discussed.

The operating lifetime, or production rate, selected for a mining project is among the most important factors influencing the project's design and ultimate economic success. Incorrectly-determined lifetimes can lead to the erroneous rejection of projects as uneconomic as well as the suboptimal exploitation of producing properties. This paper examines the optimal lifetime calculation using traditional discounted cash flow and recently-proposed option pricing techniques. Using each method, the production rate is determined as that rate at which the project's net present value is maximized.

This work investigates the effect of waste plastics addition on the reduction of iron oxide by sawdust. Composite pellets of iron oxide containing sawdust (SD), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and blends of SD/HDPE were fired under argon in a horizontal tube furnace at temperatures between 1300 and 1500 °C. Reduced samples were weighed after 10 minutes of reduction and the extent of reduction was calculated from the measured oxygen contents of the compact. The results showed improved extent of reduction when SD was blended with HDPE. The highest extent of reduction was achieved at SD:HDPE ratio of 2:3.

Monazite sand is normally processed by, the caustic soda route to produce mixed rare earths chloride, thorium hydroxide and trisodium phosphate. Bulk of the mixed rare earths chloride is used for the preparation of FC catalysts. Recently some of the catalyst producers have shown preference to cerium depleted (lanthanum enriched) rare earths chloride rather than the natural rare earths chloride obtained from monazite. Therefore, a process for producing cerium depleted rare earths chloride, cerium p thorium and uranium from Rare earths + thorium hydroxide obtained by treating monazite based on stepwise hydrochloric acid extraction, was developed in our laboratory. The process involves drying of the mixed rare earths-thorium hydroxide cake obtained by monazite-caustic soda process followed by stepwise extraction of the dried cake with hydrochloric acid under specified conditions.

ALTHOUGH some of the observers who first paid especial attention to the occurrences of oil and gas in the strata (such as Hunt in 1859, Andrews in 1861, Winchell in 1865, Mendelejeff in 1876, Höfer in 1876, Minshall in 1881, and I. C. White in 1883) seem to have been impressed with the fact that oil and gas deposits were connected with the disturbances in the rocks caused by their upheaval,1 yet, with the exception of Mendelejeff, and possibly Andrews, these observers do not appear to have understood what is really the one essential factor in the occurrence of oil and gas in the strata: viz., the faulting, uplifting, fracturing, fissuring, and jointing always accompanying even slight rock disturbances, and in certain districts (petroliferous provinces)2 allowing solfataric hydrocarbon emanations to force their way up from the interior and to reach and impregnate the porous portions of sediments subjected to the disturbances. Instead of this simple explanation to account for the observed connection between petroleum deposits and rock disturbances, most of the observers mentioned above, and many others who have followed them on the name lines since, have entirely reversed the problem. To them, instead of the dissemination of gases from fissures into the sediments, it presented the accumulation and concentration, according to anticlinal or other geologic structures, of oil and gas originally present throughout the whole mass of the strata where they were produced by the decomposition or distillation of organic remains. Whether this important problem involves accumulation from sources within the oil-bearing strata themselves, or infiltration and dissemination from outside sources, may be easily determined if all preconceived ideas are put aside and the established facts only are considered.

The laboratory development and field use of oil well cement compositions* with high resistance to drilling mud contamination are described. Resistance is obtained by adding a I-lb mixture composed of three parts paraformaldehyde to two parts sodium chromate tetra-hydrate for each sack of cement. This mixture neutralizes the cement-retarding properties of quebracho and other tannins, starch, sodium carboxymethylcellu-lose, Ignite, and monovalent salts of lignosulfonic acid. The retarding properties of calcium lignosulfonate are unaffected. The decontaminating mixture may be used in common cement (designated Type I by ASTM specifica-tions,' Class A by API Std. 10A2) or in a slow set slurry prepared from common cement by addition of calcium lignosulfonate. No changes in slurry viscosities or thickening times are caused by the protecting reagents. The method has been used in 185 field jobs where an improved success ratio has been obtained in plug setting. INTRODUCTION Field experience and laboratory investigations have established contamination by drilling mud as a major factor in oil well cement failures. During 1955, 12 attempts were required to set six open-hole cement plugs in the Timbalier Bay field, La. Eighteen to 30 hours elapsed between placing and testing the plugs in preparation for sidetracking operations. Considerations of rig time expense required immediate resetting where soft cement was drilled after a reasonable waiting period. Sea water drilling mud was used in each well and daily additions of thinners, usually lignites, had been required. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose had been added regularly to control fluid loss. The 50 per cent plug failures were attributed primarily to contamination by the mud. Similar experiences can be found in other fields along the Texas and Louisiana coasts where drilling muds normally contain large quantities of organic treating materials. Cement contamination was the subject of a survey by the Mid-Continent District Study Committee on Cementing Practices and Testing of Oil-Well Cements of the API.3 Data collected from member laboratories and released in Sept., 1951, reported the effects of a number of drilling mud treating chemicals on cement. The study revealed that many of the additives, notably the organic materials in relatively small quantities, had marked effects on the properties of cements tested. Severe losses in strength and erratic thickening time resulted from small additions of mud treating chemicals such as quebracho, starch, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and lignite. The report included no recommendations of methods for overcoming the problem. One investigation of the contamination problem reported the successful use of activated charcoal in setting cement plugs after conventional slurries had failed.4,5 The investigation indicated that an optimum concentration of 5 per cent activated charcoal was effective in combating contamination from 16.7 volume per cent of treated mud. Laboratory and field muds were included in tests and contained varied quantities of ode or more of the following: quebracho, caustic, starch, lime, and calcium lignosulfonate. The function of the charcoal appears to be physical, removing the organic materials by adsorption. The method may be employed in API Class A or Class D (unretarded slow set) cements. The results of wear on marked balls, 4, 31/2, 3, and 2 in. diam are given. All balls were forged steel of practically the same chemical analysis and hardness. The results indicate that balls in a given mill for a given length of time will have equal diameter losses, regardless of size.

During the latter part of 1943, a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the Mahopac magnetite mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the ore body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahopac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magnetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by "pinching", or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance from the original are body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained.

Since it has been demonstrated that silica caused phagocytic cells to activate lipoxygenase metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids we thought selective inhibition of this metabolic pathway might be helpful in treatment of silicosis. It is known that lipoxygenase metabolism plays a role in the pathogenesis of a variety of inflammatory and hypersensitivity conditions. Further, it is believed that the alveolar phagocytic cells which engulf silica begin the inflammatory cycle which produces the metabolic products, cytokines and growth factors which causes fibrosis in the lung. There have been indications that drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase can inhibit fibrosis from other causes. Previously, we developed a method which detects the activity of lipoxygenase metabolism by measuring free radical oxidation via light production or chemiluminescence (CL). We decided to apply this method to phagocytic cells that would be found in the lung in the presence of silica with and without newly developed inhibitors of the lipoxygenase reaction. We used drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase directly including AA861 (TAKEDA), A63162 (Abbott), and an inhibitor that scavenges free radicals produced from the lipoxygenase reaction, nordihydroguairetic acid. In addition we used an indirect inhibitor, tetrandrine. We found drug inhibition of silica activated CL from alveolar macrophages, neutrophils and human leukemia (HL-60) cells differentiated with DMSO. Nordihydroguairetic acid 2x10-5M produced almost complete inhibition in all three cell types. In human leukemia cells (HL-60) A63162 and tetrandrine were equally inhibitory at 42% while in human neutrophils A63162 and tetrandrine were less active 22 and 10% respectively. In macrophages A63162 and AA861 were less than 50% inhibitory to cellular CL at 2xl0-5M. Direct assay of tetrandrine (2x10-5M) with sodium arachidonate and soybean lipoxygenase reveals no inhibition. All antilipoxygenase drugs regardless of mechanism were inhibitory to cellular chemiluminescence from all three types of phagocytic cells. These drugs alone or in mixtures could prove useful in treatment of silicosis.
