The Bureau of Mines studied waste disposal methods a1 a coal mine in Kentucky and another in Alabama to develop cost estimates, to provide better knowledge of current practices, and to guide consideration of alternate disposal methods. Costs of the existing waste disposal systems at each mine were estimated using present-day costs of equipment and labor. Costs of waste disposal systems using alternate equipment were also estimated. Although total disposal costs were essentially the same for both operations, reclamation costs will differ because of different reclamation practices.

"The effects of five commercially available foaming reagents (range of 0 to 25 ppm) namely Dowfroth 250, Saponin, Yucca, Licorice and Meta-Para Cresol on acid mist control, current efficiency, polarization behavior, and deposit morphology and orientation were investigated. The deposition was carried out using a bench scale electrolysis apparatus (cell volume 3L) at 500 Nm-2 and 38°C for 3 hours from Kidd Creek zinc electrolyte. The acid mist control capability of the various reagents was studied and compared by characterizing the foam layer generated during actual electrowinning conditions and by direct quantitative measurements of acid mist levels on top of the electrowinning cells. Within the range considered, the addition of these reagents reduced the current efficiency, refined the grain size of the deposit, and changed to preferred orientation of most of the deposits. Among the reagents tested, acid mist measurements indicated that Licorice and Dowfroth 250 were the best acid mist suppressant at emissions of 0.30 mglm3 and 031 mg/m3 respectively while Yucca and MPC produced the most mist at 3.0 mg/m3 and 33 mg/m3 emission rates, respectively.IntroductionMost of the world's primary zinc is produced via a combined roast-Ieach-purificationelectrowinning process. Depending on the electrolysis conditions, several additives may be added to the electrolyte. Some (e.g. glue, antimony, sodium carbonate) are added to mainly counteract the detrimental effects caused by impurities while others (e.g. licorice, Saponin) are used as foaming reagents to prevent excessive acid mist formation. Acid mist emission is a problem in many electrolysis operations because it corrodes the equipment and is a health hazard to the workers in the tankhouse as well as it pollutes the environment. Due to recent trends towards more environmental protection and more stringent in-plant hygiene, there is an increasing need to minimize these aerosols. In order to eliminate or minimize these aerosols foaming agents are usually added to the electrolyte to produce a foam layer on top of the electrolyte, thus trapping most of the mist. The ideal foaming agent would trap all of the mist and would not interfere with the electrowinning process. It is also evident that the reagent toxicology, cost and availability are important factors that need to be considered.Review of the available literature clearly indicated that very little work has been done in the past on the subject of acid mist control in electrowinning operations particularly in the area of foaming and anti-misting properties of surfactants. Two papers [1,2] have reviewed briefly the existing technologies for acid mist control. Recently, most of the work in this area has focused on the development of special mechanical devices that could be attached to the electrodes and control the mist generation at the source before it is emitted to the cellhouse [2-5]. On the other hand, extensive body of literature exists that deals with the effects of anti-misting reagents on the electrowinning aspects [6-7]."

The problem of separating the constituents of a mixed gas has assumed increasing importance to chemical technology during the last several decades. Metallurgical practice, dealing mostly with the application of gases as fuel, such as for the oxidation or reduction of ores, has not often confronted an important need for such separations. If theory occasionally has indicated advantages in the use of purified or separated gases, as for example the "dry" blast for the iron furnace or oxygen-enriched blast for a variety of smelting operations, the economics of the proposals has not often been satisfactory. It has seemed evident that the practice of the chemical plant was too expensive with regard to installation or material costs, or both, for the needs of the basic smelting industries and indeed was applicable commercially to metallurgical purposes only when the metals in question were especially valuable or pure. This bulletin deals with a new mechanical means of attacking the problem of separation. Although it is improbable that any one type of separation could hope to find universal application, the method described is to be regarded as an alternative to conventional means that has attractive possibilities in certain instances. It extends the number of methods previously available by one that has not before been applied commercially and that utilizes a well-known property of gases that never has received effective technologic attention.

This paper provides a simple guiding framework for grinding circuit optimisation, focussing on common themes in past optimisation success stories, the conditions for success and techniques that can be employed to identify and define opportunities. Many significant grinding circuit improvements have been reported for operating plants, based on recurring themes such as the optimisation of mill feed size, mill liner design, process control, critical size, grinding media and classification. "This paper describes the engineering and construction activities of the ""design-build"" project awarded to the joint venture of Foundation-Comstock-Janin for the construction of the plant and wharf facilities, camp site, power plant and all supporting services. As a member of the Foundation Group of companies at that time, Fenco actecl as consulting and design engineers for the project. Particular emphasis is given to the problems which adversely affected design and construction activities due to prevailing arctic conditions and the remote location of the project. The paper also describes the approach taken in the investigation of the site and soil conditions as well as the selection of the special structures for the 225,000-toncapacity fibre storage building, the wharf structure for 50,000-dwt vessels, and the 1,000-tph-capacity reclaiming and ship-loading facilities . It further covers the logistics problems and the scheduling activities related to the short duration of the shipping season, and the transportation of equipment and mate1•ials by sea as well as by air."

Hydrocyclone separators are some of the most widely used instruments in a variety of industrial applications. Their major functions are to sort, classify and separate solid particles and liquid droplets within a multiphase flow system. Research studies employing both experimental and numerical methods recognize that the performance of a cyclone is related to its geometric dimensions as well as the inner flow pattern. Although many successes have been achieved over the past years, the majority of investigations only focused on the simplified design of cyclone geometry and on single-phase flow. Therefore, this study set out to investigate the flow field in a new-design hydrocyclone and used particle image velocimetry (PIV) to explore the complex swirling flow behavior inside the cyclone within an air core. The flow field inside the cyclone was also studied by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation using a commercial CFD package. Different turbulent models were tested in this study with a moderate-size mesh, and the interface of liquid phase and air phase was predicted by the volume of fluid (VOF) model.

The Bureau of Mines has been developing deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. A preliminary examination of the Union lead mine was made in November 1944 and January 1945 by W. T. Benson, a Bureau of Mines engineer, who recommended development by diamond drilling. The Bureau conducted a drilling project at the mine from February 12 to May 16, 1947. The property is in sec.12, T. 17'N., R. 19 E., Mount Diablo Base and Meridian, in. southern Washoe County, Nev., about 15 miles south of Reno. The Union lead mane, also known 4s the Commonwealth mine, has been an intermittent producer of zinc-lead-silver ore since 1860. During World War II, ore was shipped to smelter& near: salt Lake City, Utah. The Bureau drilled 21 diamond-drill holes having a total length of 1,549 feet and 20 long percussion-drill holes with a total length of 359 feet. The program was designed to test for horizontal and vertical extensions of the ore body and to prospect for parallel ore bodies. As a result of this program, extensions of the ore zone were established, but no parallel ore-bearing structures were found. The areas drilled were limited by drill sites available.

Rio Tinto Alcan has undertaken feasibility level assessments into the expansion of its bauxite mining operation in an area south of the Embley River in far north Queensland. The project has the potential to extend their Weipa operations by approximately 40 years.The construction and operation of two additional mineral ore processing plants are proposed for the South of Embley project. Golder Associates was engaged to develop and conduct modelling assessments of potential sources of water supply required by mineral ore processing.Two models were developed using GoldSim: a dam yield model and a water balance model. GoldSim is a graphical object-oriented modelling environment with a capacity to carry out dynamic probabilistic simulations. Originally developed by Golder, GoldSim has been applied successfully in a decision support role to a range of mine water management operations.The dam yield model was used to provide estimates of reliability and volume of annual water supply of several potential surface water dams. This information was then used to determine a hierarchy of water supply options for processing plant operations. The water balance model dynamically simulated the water demands of the two production plants and the consequential response in water supply, with respect to the timing and discharges provided by the various source options.Use of the model provided a preliminary operational tool to assist with water supply management decisions. Water quality issues required a blending of water from separate sources and attention paid to scheduling to ensure water supply through the dry season. The model also helped identify risks to water supply in the event of underperformance of one or more water supply sources. This allowed the operational rules to be refined to minimise those risks.The dynamic and stochastic modelling approach provided a method for identification of water supply issues susceptible to seasonal climate variability.CITATION:Weeks, S W, Hart, M and Fergus, G, 2013. During the recovery of copper, nickel, zinc, and lead from their sulfide ores, large amounts of sulfur dioxide are generated. A fraction of this gas is captured and transformed into sulfuric acid and liquid SOl and the remainder is emitted to the atmosphere. Numerous proposals were made to solve this problem. Hydrometallurgy offers the only valid solution by which elemental sulfur instead of sulfur dioxide can be produced. Sulfur can be easily stored, transported long distances, or transformed into S02 and H2S04 when desired.

This report on tungsten in Ouray, San Juan, and San Miguel Counties, Colo., is one of a series describing results of studies on the tungsten potentialities in Region III, Bureau of Mines. The San Juan tungsten deposits occur in an area of 250 square miles, centering near the common corner of Ouray, San Juan, and San Miguel Counties (fig. 1). Field work supporting these studies was done in May 1954. Bureau of Mines reports prepared from investigations made during World War II and under the Defense Production Act of 1950 were reviewed.

THE term "high pressure", as used in industry today, is applied rather loosely. Generally, it refers to pressures that are higher than those encountered in most industrial processes although no definite limits are normally stated. For the purpose of this talk I should like to set rather arbitrary limits to the term "high pressure", and in ab-solute figures this would be the range from 1000 psi to perhaps 40,000 or 50,000 p.s.i. The scope of high pressure technology is very broad, and it would take more time than we have avail-able here today to cover fully even one aspect of the field. Therefore, I should like to discuss just some of the techniques used and problems en-countered in high pressure operations. Research work into the high pressure region dates back about 150 years, but it was not until 1910 that the first commercial application of high pressure technology was made in the production of ammonia.

The Doyon Mine in Quebec, Canada, evaluates the possibility of desulfurizing its tailings to produce material to be used as cover for the acid-generating tailings disposal site. Laboratory tests showed that a single-layer cover made of desulfurized tailings placed over reactive tailings can prevent the generation of acid mine drainage. Modeling with the software Vadose/W was used to optimize the design parameters, namely, cover thickness, water table position and residual sulfide content of desulfurized tailings following laboratory work. It was found that the optimal configuration includes a 1-m (3.3-ft) desulfurized tailings cover containing 0.8% S, with the water table kept at the interface between the reactive tailings and the cover. To maintain the cover performance to reduce oxygen flux toward acid-generating tailings even in the event of a long dry period, a sand layer is suggested to protect the cover from excessive evaporation. It is possible to reach the environmental objective for oxygen flux chosen for the Doyon Mine (10 mol/ m2/year) with the protective sand layer, even in extremely dry conditions.

"OPERATIONS at Canadian Cop-per Refiners Limited, since the refinery was established in 1931, have been described in previous papers ( 1,2). Since then the refinery has treated the entire copper output of Noranda Mines Limited and Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company Limited. With the commencement of production in 1956 at Gaspe Copper Mines Limited, this copper has also been refined. From the start of operations to the end of 1958, the following had been refined: copper, silver, gold, selenium and tellurium.Construction of new buildings and additions to other buildings have been needed to handle increased receipts. The refining capacity has been increased from 112,000 tons of copper per year to a total of 236,000 tons per year.The refinery is located at Mont-real East, Quebec, close to railway and highway facilities. Incoming materials and shipments, with some small exceptions, are handled by rail. Some finished products are sl1ipped by industrial flatcar to the adjoining plants of Canada Wire & Cable Company Limited and Noranda Copper & Brass Limited."

The silicate slag and copper matte that are the byproducts of smelting copper in a reverberatory furnace contain SiO2, FeO, Fe3O4, CaO and Al2O3, and Cu, Fe and S, respectively. These components influence the oxide (Cuox), sulfide (Cusul) and total (Cutotal) copper content lost in the waste slag. This paper uses multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA) to determine the degree of influence. The results of calculations obtained using MLRA were compared to actual measured results and found to have a large degree of correspondence, with the coefficient of determination R2 = 0.975. These results indicate that slag composition and copper content in the matte influence the copper losses in the waste slag with a probability of above 97%. It was determined that, of the total copper content of the slag, 74% is in sulfide and 26% in oxide form, and that this ratio is not dependent on the slag or matte composition.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 299 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1972 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Fourteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,902 gas analyses prior to 1972. "I AM CONSCIOUS of the honour you pay me by having invited me to address you on the subject of the Rehabilitation of the Sydney Steel Corporation. The true architect of the revival and rehabilitation is Robert Burns Cameron. Because of the numerous myths which have grown up around what seems to be the miracle of the revival of the Sydney Steelworks, I propose to go back to the time when they came under the full control of the Province, on the 1st of January, 1968. Late in 1967, the decision was taken by Premier G. I. Smith to keep the Steel Plant running for at least another year, in an endeavour to see whether the enormous losses being sustained by Dosco could be reduced to a level which would permit their continuing operation. When that decision was taken, Dosco was to continue management until the 30th of April, 1968, and in the intervening period, the Provincial Government would seek management of the right calibre to ensure that an objective view of the Steelworks operations could be secured. By a combination of circumstances which can only be described as most felicitous, the man selected for the task was R. B. Cameron. He very quickly determined that to permit Dosco to continue management of the Steelworks until April 30 could only result in heavy losses to the Province and a consequent deterioration in the already critical financial position and a declining morale of the worke"

New erosion, corrosion resistant metal, ceramic, and polymer composite technologies are being developed and marketed by Alanx Products L.P. for use in hydrocyclones, pumps, valves, and other applications in mining and minerals processing. This paper will present an overview of the ceramic/metal composite material system and properties developed, which include excellent erosion/ corrosion resistance. Wear data will be shown from a variety of laboratory tests in dry and wet conditions, in aqueous neutral and corrosive environments. Comparisons will be made with a variety of competitive materials currently used in the industries sited. Data will also be presented on field tests with pumps and hydrocyclones in hard rock mining and other abrasive/corrosive environments. Field data from North and South America, as well as Australian mining applications will be highlighted.

"In the practice of conventional sintering, production is always afflicted with the problem of being unable to get a uniform quality of produced sinter in the bed. Invariably the top layer of the sinter cake is composed of weak but highly sinter, while the bottom layer is over-fused, forming a sinter that is very strong but less reducible. These symptoms point to a variable distribution of the heat balance in the process of sintering which results in a deficit of heat in the top layers of the sinter bed and an excess of heat in the bottom layers, due to an increasing input of regenerated heat in the heat balance down the bed. This causes losses in the productivities of the sinter machine and the blast furnace.The current work was designed to improve on the solution to the above problem through the establishment of a more accurate combustion zone heat balance of the sintering process. This development is mostly on the method of determining the regenerated heat input in the overall heat balance. Previous methods were based on the assumption that the width and the velocity of the combustion zone remain constant through out its whole life, which is not the case since tests have shown that both its width and velocity increase as the combustion zone moves down the bed. In this work, these factors have been taken into account. Tests and calculations using the model were carried out for haematite and limonitic ores. The high sensitivity of the model to changes in the sinter mix composition and sintering conditions was demonstrated.The results present the following prospects:• The minimum theoretically possible coke breeze consumption during the sintering of any type of iron ore fines, under any sintering conditions, can be established.• The model can be used to control the metallurgical quality of the sinter in any point in the sinter bed since calculation data includes desired basicity, combustion zone temperature and FeO content in the sinter produced."

Over a period of three years, a cooperative program in Australia has resulted in the development of radioisotope immersion probes for the on-stream analysis of mineral slurries. Two basic probe types are now available on a commercial basis - fluorescence and absorption probes - and within each type there are a number of variations so that optimum sensitivities can be obtained for elements with atomic number greater than titanium (22), thus covering most metals of interest to modern metallurgy.
