Cable bolt support techniques. including hardware and anchorage systems, continue to evolve to meet U.S. mining requirements. For cable support systems to be successfully implemented into new ground control areas, the mechanics of this support and the potential range of performance need to be better understood. To contribute to this understanding, a series of 36 pull tests were performed on 10 ft long cable bolts using various combinations of hole diameters, resin formulations, anchor types, and with and without resin dams. These tests provided insight as to the influence of these four parameters on cable system performance. Performance was assessed in terms of support capacity (maximum load attained in a pull test), system stiffness (assessed from two intervals of load-deformation), and from the general load-deformation response. Three characteristic load-deformation responses were observed. An Analysis of Variance identified a number of main effects and interactions of significance to support capacity and stiffness. The factorial experiment performed in this study provides insight to the effects of several design parameters associated with resin-anchored cable bolts.

Removing the interference of latter events, the data of geophysical (such as gravity and aeromagnetic) anomalies may indicate whether the mobile belt exist and whether the adjacent terrains of the mobile belt originally belong to one single unit. The petrotectonic assemblage can provide informations about the tectonic setting where it was generated from. The structural style can exhibit the kinetic and kinematic processes. The form of ancient isogeotherm may reflect the ancient geothermal regime which is related to the tectonic mechanism. In general, the early Precambrian terrains suffered polymetamorphism and multiple structural deformation. The researches must be carried out for the distribution of paleogeotharm and m.tamo'phic facies and zones on the basis of recovering the early structural style with structural analysis method; then a relatively correct conclusion may be geined on the ancient geothermal regime. This method can be known as "Ancient Thermotectonic Analysis". Through the sythetical research, a real knowlege about the tectonic setting of early Precambrian mobile belt can be obtained.

Four samples of galena, each prepared differently, dry ground chalcopvrite and real gar have shown various quantities of liberated sulfur corresponding up to nine equivalent monolavers on their surfaces as determined by the solvent extraction/UV analysis of sulfur using ethanol. The pretreatment of a dry ground galena sample with acidified ammonium chloride or neutral, saturated sodium chloride solutions rendered the mineral readily floatable. The collectorless floatabilities of galena pretreated with the former solution and of drv ground chalcopvrite have been evaluated in reference to the natural floatability of sulfur using the critical surface tension of floatability approach with aqueous methanol solutions. It is shown that the amount of sulfur- on these samples can be correlated with their flotation rate, which was found to he first order within the critical surface tension range. The larger the concentration of surface sulfur, the faster the sulfide mineral floats, thus, the greater its flotation rate constant.

In New Mexico, there are at least 100,000 abandoned mine waste rock piles with widely ranging geochemical and mineralogical compositions. A geochemical and mineralogical study was implemented for five waste rock piles, some which contained sulfides, in the Hillsborn Mining District. Chemical and physical characteristics of mineral grains and their secondary mineral oxidation rinds were examined with the electron microprobe. Pyrite and chalcopyrite appear to be the most reactive to oxidizing conditions. Clays, iron oxide, iron hydroxide, iron sulfate, and primary texture rinds exist in the waste rock piles analyzed.

I have been following the discussions on coal degradation started by the article "Degradation process in coal slurry pipe-lines," by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott. I agree with Mr. Dasher's comments in January that the title of the article was perhaps misleading as the information appeared to pertain more to processing the coal than to transportation. Specifically, the authors' conclude that the cyclone had an important impact on the degradation. Dr. Ferri's comments on degradation in other physical processes was very correct, handling of coal in a turbulent manner has an impact on the size distribution of the coal. This is one reason that when I design a coal system (mine to rail car) I try to minimize the total number of transfer and processing steps consistent with achieving the desired product specifications. Another area, mentioned in passing in the article, the impact of natural causes and the mining step, is of particular interest to me. A mine in West Virginia had a variation of 50% in the -6.35 mm (-0.25 in.) raw coal depending upon the direction of mining. Since it was a single unit mine, this significantly impacted the final product. Two articles on mining's impact on size distribution are: • Stefanko, R., Chopra, I. K., and Ramani, R. V., 1974, "Mining influence on size consistency and washability char¬acteristics of coal," SME Fall Meeting. September; and • Albrecht, M., and Olsen, D., 1980, "Mining methods impact on coal preparation plant design." 1st International Mine Planning and Development Symposium. September. Both articles presented information on variation of size distribution and cleaning plant performance on a coal depending on the mining method used. Both articles considered a single coal seam at one mining operation. Stefanko's article considered continuous and conventional mining of coal in Pennsylvania. Albrecht's article considered surface, underground continuous, and underground hydraulic mining of a coal in British Columbia. Both concluded that mining methods do impact coal characteristics. I agree with Mr. Ayat's comments in reply to Dr. Ferri's discussion, "... degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors." As efforts are being made to produce a higher quality (lower sulfur) coal, this topic becomes even more important

The demand for iron ore has increased significantly in recent years, with new iron ore sources being mined to meet this demand. As the composition of sinter blends changes with the availability and cost of iron ore, so too does interest in the impact of new ore types on granulation and ultimately productivity. This paper describes a study into granulating characteristics of seven iron ore types, including various hematite and goethite ores. The effect of ore type on feed moisture requirements, green bed permeability, green bed strength and granule size distribution was examined for single ore blends containing coke, flux and returns. The ore size distribution was varied in these blends and its effect on granulating characteristics examined. It was found that the optimum moisture requirement of the ore was more dependent on ore type than ore size distribution, but ore size distribution (and specifically intermediate particle loading) had a greater effect on green bed permeability. The saturation moisture value for an ore was found useful in predicting both optimum granulation moisture and green bed permeability.

The results of five years of geotechnical investigations are presented to develop productive and stable longwall layouts for the Foidel Creek Mine. The program was initiated during the pre-mining stage, and has continuously provided the data required for mine design. From several stress determinations at the mine, the relationship between geologic structure and the stress field/depth was established. The results were used for orienting the entries for improved stability. Cave conditions and load transfer to panel boundaries were evaluated from closely monitored full extraction mining and computer analysis. Back-analyses of ground movements, as compared with the actual measurements, indicated that cave conditions were favorable in spite of the presence of competent, thick-bedded sandstones in the mine roof. Gate pillar design using a yield-rigid concept was developed through computer analyses and underground instrumentation, resulting in 35 and 75 ft wide pillars. The influence of a slickensided bedding plane at the roof contact on pillar yield zones, core confinement, and pillar behavior was evaluated.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory executed 19 intermediate scale cratering experiments in oil shale at the Colony Mine in Garfield County, Colorado. These experiments have led to a better under- standing of fracture characteristics and fragmentation of & - oil shale by use of a conventional high explosive. Geologic site characterization included detailed mapping, coring, and sample analyses. Site-specific geology was observed to be a major influence on the resulting crater geometry. The joint patterns at the experimental site frequently defined the final crater symmetry. Secondary influences included vugs, lithology changes, and grade fluctuations in the local stratigraphy. Most experiments, in both the rib and floor, were conducted to obtain data to investigate the fragmentation results within the craters. The rubble was screened for fragment- size distributions. Geologic features in proximity to the explosive charge had minimal effect on the rubble due to the overpowering effect of the detonation. However, these same features became more influential on the fracture and rubble characteristics with greater distances from the shothole. Postshot cores revealed a direct relationship between the grade of the oil shale and its susceptibility to fracturing. The Colony Mine experiments have demonstrated the significant role of geology in high explosive/oil shale interaction. It is probable that this role will have to be considered for larger applications to blast patterns and potential problems in retort stability in the future of oil shale development.

Although water quality predictions are often made in Environmental Impact Statements (EIS's) as part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), comparisons between predicted and actual water quality conditions are rarely reviewed. A comprehensive review of predicted and actual water quality conditions was conducted for a number of large U.S. hardrock mines with EIS’s. For mines with large differences between predicted and actual conditions, factors responsible for the deviations, such as characterization and modeling errors or engineering failures, were identified. Recommendations are made for how the NEPA process could be modified to better predict water quality at hardrock mine sites.

"Gold mineralization in the Main Reef Complex at Sheba Gold Mine is hosted within shear zones in a sequence of shales and greywackes of the Fig Tree Group. Competency contrasts between these rocks and a steeply dipping chert unit provided a locus for the development of right lateral steeply dipping shear zones. A set of flatter dipping shear fractures crosscut these zones with their intersections defining a system of en échelon ore shoots. Mineralization is both of vein type and disseminated strata-controlled replacement type. The latter occurs mainly within the wall rocks to the shear zones. Arsenopyrite and pyrite are the major sulfides, with arsenopyrite being confirmed largely to greywacke beds and pyrite to the more iron-rich shale units. Gold was introduced, together with minor sphalerite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and early arsenopyrite, toward the end stages of a first pyrite phase. The mineralizing fluids were introduced along dilated cleavage planes and, emanating from these, produced a series of replacement fronts. Mineralization was syntectonic to late tectonic and occurred under conditions of progressive deformation, resulting in sulfides which are concentrated in the hinges of shear-related folds and semimassive sulfides within tension fractures which are folded, attenuated and fractured. An analysis of the structures shows a sequence of events in which an initial ductile simple-shear event with a steep sense of movement was succeeded by a more brittle strike-slip event. Mineralization is temporally related to the latter. This evolution in structural style was probably related to reactivation of the Sheba Fault as a transcurrent fault during emplacement of large granitoid bodies."

In 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management~ the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 7,600 and 3,000 acres, respectively, of the Slocum Creek (OR-003-075) and Upper Leslie Gulch (OR-003-074) Wilderness Study Areas in order to evaluate their mineral resources. They are located in Malheur County, OR, about 25 mi northwest of Jordan Valley. Both areas have an occurrence of stone (welded tuff) covering about 3,000 acres which is suitable for construction purposes including road metal, ballast, and road fill. However, similiar deposits are more accessible and closer to markets.

A number of factors affecting the properties of cemented aggregate fill (CAF), particularly its strength development have been studied through a series of laboratory investigations carried out at the Western Australian School of Mines in the Western Australia in recent years. The outcomes of these investigations indicate that apart from cement dosage, aggregate particle size distribution, aggregate quality, additional fine materials, water salinity, admixture dosage and sample scaling all contribute significantly to the development of cemented aggregate fill strength.

The mineral industry in Burundi was a minor contributor to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), which was estimated at just $1 billion for 19812. Coffee and tea continued as the Nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports consisted of small tonnages of wolframite, cassiterite, and baetnasite. Burundi's trade balance of payments situation worsened in 1981, with import payments more than double export revenues. Petroleum imports alone equaled 46% of the export revenue total. By year-end, the only indigenous fossil fuel source to have been found in Burundi was peat, which the Government had been attempting to develop to alleviate some of the petroleum import requirements. In June 1981 the Irish Peat Development Authority, Bord na Mona, signed a 4-year contract with the Burundian Government to supply technical staff for the ongoing peat project work there. Funding for the project was provided by the VS. Agency for International Development and the Government of Ireland. The new contract, which was an extension of ongoing peat research there, represented Burundi's increased awareness of the value of its large peat reserves for both energy and agricultural uses. At yearend, Burundi's Ministry of Public Works and Mines was does to selecting a contractor to study the feasibility of developing Burundi's phosphate deposits. The study would determine the potential for establishing fertilizer production facilities based on the country's phosphate reserves at Matongo-Bandaga, The study's specific objectives are to prove mineral reserve tonnage and grade, draw up mining and processing facility designs, estimate capital and production costs, and conduct a regional market and distribution survey. The cost of the study was estimated at slightly over $1 million, and it should take approximately 16 months to complete. The proposed project will mark the Burundian Government's first step in its plan to exploit on a large scale its natural mineral resources for advancing its agriculture-based economy. Burundi was dependent on imports, which are expensive to transport inland from coastal ports, to supply its domestic requirements for fertilizer. ALTHOUGH the occurrence of a readily visible tarnish on the stress-corrosion fracture surfaces of titanium alloys tested in oxygenated nitrogen tetrox-ide solutions has been reported,' the possibility that the formation of this tarnish is a requirement for cracking to proceed does not appear to have been considered. It has been proposed that failure occurs in this system as a result of some electrochemical-mechanical process.2 However, recent studies3-6 of the stress-corrosion cracking of a brass in certain ammoniacal solutions, which also cause visible tarnishing, have led to the view that failure occurs by the repeated formation and fracture of a brittle surface film of cuprous oxide. The purpose of this note is to point out the similarities which exist between the tarnish which forms on a brass and that found on titanium alloys failed in nitrogen tetroxide, and to suggest, by analogy, that a similar tarnish-rupture mechanism may be operative in the latter case. The titanium alloy selected for the present study contained 5.2 pct Al, 2.5 pct Sn, 0.025 pct C, 0.16 pct Fe, 0.014 pct N, 0.012 pct H, 0.07 pct 0, and 0.002 pct Mn by weight. Vacuum-annealed alloy strips measuring 4 by 0.25 by 0.04 in. were used to prepare self-stressed test specimens. Each specimen was made from two strips by bending the end portions and spot welding them together to produce curved sections of uniform bending stress. (The exact details of preparing such specimens have been described by Lisagor el al.7) The curvature in the strips determines the ma-magnitude of the outer fiber stress, which in the present specimens was 100,000 psi (yield stress = 120,000 psi). The specimen surface in the spot-welded end regions was shot-peened to induce compressive stresses and thereby eliminate the possibility of stress-corrosion cracking in these regions. The test environment was nitrogen tetroxide, initially containing 99.5 pct N2O4, 0.1 pct H2O, and 0.08 pct C1, through which oxygen had been bubbled for 30 min. During testing the tetroxide was subject to an oxygen pressure of 250 psi. The duration of the test was 96 hr, and during this time stress-corrosion cracks propagated through some 50 pct of the thickness of the specimens. After testing, the tarnish was liberated from the fracture surface by immersion in a methanol-5 pct bromine solution, and then examined by electron dif- fraction and transmission electron microscopy using a JEM-7 electron microscope. The possibility that the bromine solution had affected the structure of the tarnish was investigated by an "in silu" examination of the stress-corrosion fracture surface using a reflection electron diffraction attachment designed for handling bulk specimens. Typical areas of the tarnish liberated by the me-thanol-bromine solution are shown in Fig. 1. Fig. l(a) reveals that the tarnish consists of individual platelets, and from Fig. l(b) it can be seen that the platelets are joined together to form a semicontinuous film, the boundaries of the titanium substrate grains being retained in the tarnish. Electron-diffraction patterns taken from these areas exhibited diffraction spots typical of a monocrystal. The diffraction pattern shown in Fig. 2 was taken from the central area in Fig. l(n). Monocrystal patterns obtained from areas containing numerous individual platelets can only be explained by assuming that their growth is governed by the titanium substrate (i.e., their growth is epitaxial). In other areas, the tarnish had folded over or became mechanically damaged, and these areas gave diffraction patterns consisting of "spotted" rings, enabling interplanar spacings of the tarnish lattice to be determined.
