The Fabian ore body near Malmberget, Sweden, has an ore reserve of 5 Mt of predominately low grade iron ore, containing 40-55% Fe. Mining began in 1971 with a new method called slot block caving. About 2 Mt were mined, but poor fragmentation resulted in too much secondary blasting. This decreased mucking efficiency to such an extent that the method was abandoned after only 40% of the ore volume had been mined. At this stage a large stope (180 x 30 x 100 m) had been excavated. Although the exposed area was quite large, no caving action occurred in the hanging wall or in the ceiling. LKAB decided in 1977 to introduce sublevel stoping using 105-mm-diam holes. This was the first time large diameter holes were used underground in Sweden. The method had been evaluated in collaboration with the University of Luleå (LuH), the Swedish Detonic Research Foundation (SveDeFo), and the Swedish Mining Research Foundation.

The first catalogue of Geological Reports of the United States was prepared by Prof. 0. C. Marsh, and published in the American Journal of Science and Ark for 1567, vol. xliii, second series. Since then the list has more than doubled, and it was thought that the publication of a new catalogue, brought clown to date, would be useful to many of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers. The compiler will be most thankful to have any omissions or inaccuracies in the list sent to him, to be published as a supplement in the next volume of the Transactions. Especially to have the correct title, number of pages, plates, and maps of any volume on the list to which an * is prefixed, as he has been unable to personally consult such works. A preliminary list was issued last February, which has been almost doubled by the kindness of many friends. Pressure leach liquors from the pressure oxidation of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore were treated to remove iron, either by pressure oxidation (the Hematite process) or with particles of magnetite (the Magnetite process), followed by cementation of various metals with zinc dust to obtain a purified solution from which zinc was electrowon. Satisfactory iron removal was achieved by both processes after neutralisation to pH 4.5 or 5.5. Pressure oxidation of the liquor at 200¦C and 690 kPa oxygen overpressure, conditions similar to those of the Hematite process used in the zinc industry, resulted in the precipitation of the iron as hematite. With the Magnetite process, an iron hydroxide was precipitated onto magnetite at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature and removed by a magnetic separation step. The performances of both these processes for the removal of iron are compared. It is concluded that the Magnetite process offers considerable cost savings. Other impurities, in particular arsenic, were also removed with the iron in both processes. Cementation at pH 5.2 and 85-90 ¦C with 3.5 g/L zinc dust reduced the levels of copper, cadmium, and nickel to a satisfactory level and subsequent electrolysis in a laboratory cell gave an acceptable deposit of zinc.

"The Bond low energy impact (crushing) work index test is specified to be performed on rock specimens between 50 mm and 75 mm in effective diameter. NQ-diameter drill core, frequently used in mineral exploration programs does not meet that specification, it being 45 mm diameter or less.This paper reports the effect of performing the impact test on contiguous sections of HQ diameter and NQ diameter core, exploring the hypothesis that the contiguous intervals give equivalent results in spite of the core diameter difference."

The Sumich (Victorine) gold mine is located in the Toiyabe Mountain Range on the east side of Victorine Canyon, a north-trending branch off Kingston Canyon in the northwest quarter of Section 27 and southwest quarter of Section 22, T16N, R43E, in the southern end of Lander County, Nevada (Fig. 1). HISTORY Discovered in 1862, the Victorine reached a peak of development between 1872 and 1887. The "Victorine" and "Morning Star" lode mining claims, located on the outcrop of a prominent auriferous quartz vein, were patented in 1869 and 1891, respectively. 1, respectively. Gold ore was mined underground in adits driven, on the level, directly into the side of the mountain. Ore brought to the surface was trammed about 457 m (1500 ft) south on a track constructed along the contour to ore bins. From this transfer point, the ore was moved by aerial tram to the bottom of the canyon then hauled by horse-drawn wagon to the mill located about 3.2 km (2 miles) east down Kingston Canyon. Exact details of the milling process used on the Victorine are lacking, but old reports mention water-driven stamp mills, amalgamation, chlorination, and cyanidation. Gold and silver mill products are reported to have been sent to England for final refining. High-grade gold values of 103 g/t (3 oz per ton) remaining in mine walls and on outcrops, attest to the lack of success in treating the Victorine ore in the early mills. The Victorine mine may have been worked sporadically after 1887 with little success. In 1934, control of the property was acquired by William P. Moloney, an attorney from Marion, OH, who also control- 1 led an interest in the successful Goldacres mine in Lander County, NV. This property was studied, sampled, and metallurgical tests were done in 1934, but no development resulted from this work.

Battelle Memorial Institute participated in a program for the General Services Administration aimed at developing a nickel-cobalt separation process that could be integrated in the Nicaro nickel plant. At the time the programwas being carried out, the Nicaro process was a straight-through operation, in which the ore was reduced and leached, after which the pregnant solution was boiled to produce a so-called "bulk precipitate" which contained virtually all of the nickel and cobalt which had been dissolved in the leaching step. The weight ratio of nickel to cobalt in Nicaro ore is approximately 15 to 20:l. The weight ratio of nickel to cobalt in the finished product had to be 100:l or higher to meet specifications. Because the Nicaro process embodied no nickel-cobalt separation step, the only way that a bulk precipitate of the specified nicke1:cobalt ratio could be produced was to so adjust roasting and leaching conditions that nickel would be selectively leached and most of the cobalt would be rejected with the tailings. The required selectivity, however, was achieved at the expense of nickel recovery, which was 5 or more per cent less than might have been obtained with the existing equipment, utilities, man power, etc., had selectivity been no object. The over-all purpose of the program was to develop a separation step that could be fitted into or onto the Nicaro facilities and which would permit the manufacture of a product that would meet the desired specifications and still permit the recovery of a maximum amount of nickel. Battelle suggested that this might be accomplished by reprocessing off-specification bulk precipitate and specifically suggested the process based on ammonium sulphate leaching followed by hydrogen reduction of the leach solution according to techniques developed commercially by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited. Such a process would not only satisfy the objectives of the research but would present two additional advantages. (1) It would produce a separate cobalt product which could be further processed into metal, alloys, oxides, or salts. (2) It would yield nickel in metallic form which might be more generally marketable and command a slightly higher price per unit of nickel than the Nicaro oxide product. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the process. "Palabora Mining Copper (PMC) has two autogenous mills that have been in operation since 1976. The mills were originally designed to treat 30 000 t/d of open cast copper ore in a closed circuit with cyclones. As the ore body went deeper the open cast method of mining was changed to block caving, a consequence of this was the dolerite content (hardest barren material) increased significantly, increasing the production rate of pebbles and thus reducing the milling capacity. In order to cope with the increased ore hardness and to increase mill capacity, a second ball milling stage and pebble crushing were incorporated to the circuit. The above actions created new challenges to the circuit operation and bottlenecks in different areas of the milling circuit.This paper reports the holistic work performed on the Palabora autogenous milling circuit including the implementation of a mill constraint control scheme, the implementation of a pebble removal system from the circuit and a new circuit configuration."

Until four years ago the market price of oil securities moved directly and immediately with the general list. This point, was first developed by the senior author in 1924 while making a statistical study of the relative movement of oil securities and the general market. Plotting the monthly averages of 17 oils against 233 industrials disclosed the sur- prising relationship shown in Fig. 1. During the Centennial year some of our leading geologists in the United States and Canada conceived the happy thought of calling an International Congress of Geologists for the purpose of agreeing upon such important though subsidiary matters as the colors by means of which the different geological formations should be expressed ; the terms that should be applied respectively to these formations; and also upon the far more important problem of the limits and values of these different formations. The first session of this Congress was held in Paris in 1878, the second session in Bologna in 1881, and the third session in Berlin in 1884. The third session found the preliminary difficulties so far cleared away that some definite and tangible results could be attained. After a great deal of free discussion had taken place at Paris and Bologna, during which every one's views were listened to with attention; and a great deal more painstaking scientific work had been accomplished by the International Committees, having before them the objects of unifying the nomenclature of the science, and of preparing a scheme of colors between the second and third sessions of the Congress; and after the provisional results had been subjected to a searching criticism by the Congress in Berlin; it was decided to make an attempt to embody these provisional results in some work which should include as many as possible of the difficulties to

The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, as amended, and related regulations take blasting safety into consideration by requiring compliance with existing state and federal laws. The regulations are based on blasting practices developed by the industry, as well as research and experimentation by the US Bureau of Mines and explosive manufacturers. Residential areas in the proximity of surface mines have made it mandatory that blasting operations be conducted under restrictions and requirements designed to protect the public and structures located within 0.8 km (0.5 mile) of any surface blasting activities. Restrictions against blasting apply where dwellings, schools, churches, hospitals, or nursing facilities are within 305 m (1000 ft) of blasting operations. They also apply where wells, petroleum or gas storage facilities, municipal water storage facilities, fluid transmission pipelines, gas or oil collection lines, and sewage lines are within 152 in (500 ft) of blasting operations.

Backfil ling of excavated Sub Level Open Stopes has been underway since March 1989 and as at December 1992 some 1 100 000 cubic metres of Cemented Aggregate Fill have been placed. During these three years significant developments in fill quantities, types and cost have taken place.Operational improvements have reduced the quantity of Cement Aggregate Fill by 40 per cent. These results have been achieved by:ò rescheduling stopes,ò designing smaller primary stope, and ò use of uncemented rockfill.Unit cost for Cement Aggregate Fill have fallen in the order of 50 per cent through:improving fill hole reli ability,simplified barricade construction procedures, reducing the cement content,ò substituting dune sand for deslimed mill tailings, ò improved maintenance at the Backfill plant, and ò renegotiated site freight agreement.This paper will review the historical developments of backfill use at Olympic Dam.

A novel, microaerobic, heterotrophic microbial leaching system for manganese dioxide is described. Mixed natural microflora were enriched by addition of sugars and crude plant nutrItIOnal supplements. Between 84 and 104 mg MnH was solubilized per gram sugar at I per cent (w/v) concentrations for fructose and galactose in the presence of 0.03 per cent w/v dried microalgae (a Chlamydomonas species). Some 42 per cent soluble manganese was dissolved by microbial action on MnO, (3 per cent (w/v) pulp density) using a 10 per cent (w/v) molasses growth substrate.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has been conducting research on delay blasting in underground coal mines in support of the efforts of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, to revise coal mine blasting regulations. Part of the research centered on developing an understanding of the factors that lead to misfires of permissible explosives. Research was conducted to determine whether frequency of misfires was related to borehole spacing. For a wide variety of permissible explosives, misfires were observed for about 50 X of the holes at 45-cm (18-in) spacing. Misfires were also observed for 60-cm (24-in) spacing, but the frequency of misfires was much lower than observed for the 45-cm (18-in) spacing. The Bureau has recommended that hole spacings of less than 60 cm (24 in) be prohibited.

The Black River and Maysville underground limestone mines operated by Carmeuse Lime and Stone, Inc. in northeastem Kentucky are two of the largest underground limestone operations in the United States. The combined output of these two options has consistently averaged over 5.5- million tons per year for the last decade. The mines operated beneath 650-ft and 1,200-ft of overburden and are affected by high horizontal stress. In 1982 changes to the mine design were made at the Maysville mine to improve ground conditions. A series of design changes were initiated in 2002 at Black River to improve ground conditions. This paper reviews the results of the changes made at Maysville, recent horizontal stress measurements conducted at the Black River mine, and the recent modifications to the Black River mine design. Roof fall statistics at both operations are used to compare the distinctly different mine layouts used at the two mines.
