Industry-sponsored research at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has produced models of high tension roll and electrostatic plate separators operating in mineral sands dry plants. The behaviour of mineral species has been characterised under a wide variety of operating conditions by extensive plant machine sampling and laboratory measurements. The effect of operating conditions on separator performance has been quantified by monitoring changes in the weight distribution of mineral species along the product splitter axis. The response of each mineral species has been modelled on a size-by-size basis using an average surface charge decay time and a variation in its surface properties. The models incorporate changes in machine, mineral and ambient conditions on the separation and predict all product flows, assays and size distributions. This paper outlines the structure of the models. These models are being implemented in JKSimSand, an user-friendly simulation software Package.

First mining operations in the Tyrone District, located just north of the Burro Mountains in Grant County, New Mexico, commenced in the 1870's. A major operation was undertaken by Phelps Dodge Corporation in the early 1900's when a 2,000 ton per day underground mine was developed and a gravity concentrator was built east of the mine and across the Continental Divide. It was during this time that the picturesque Tyrone townsite was built and occupied. In 1921, however, the underground operation was closed because of high operating costs and low demand for copper. The area was drilled extensively during the 1950's and in October 1966 Phelps Dodge announced the pending development of the new Tyrone with a large open-pit mine, a modern concentrator, suitable support facilities, and a new townsite to be located between the mine and Silver City. Stripping for the pit and construction of shop and milling facilities began in 1967. By the spring of 1969, ore was being stockpiled near the primary crusher. Operation of the concentrator on a 3-shift per day basis commenced on July 17, 1969. The concentrator as initially built had one primary, two secondary, and five tertiary cone crushers, two grinding sections of six ball mills each, two flotation sections, four filters, and four tailing thickeners. 'he capacity was about 30,000 tons per day. In 1971 and 1972, the capacity was increased to 48,000 tons per day by the addition of one secondary and two tertiary crushers, one section of eight ball mills, one flotation section, two filters, and four more tailing thickeners. The metallurgical fuel of Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico has been a Veiny tardy member in the caravan of western industrial progress. The history of western coke has naturally been closely related to the development of the metallurgy of iron and steel and the precious metals, in the State of Colorado. It was at Leadville, with a population of 300 in 1877, that the Sentinel was published by Richard S. Allen. The Sentinel gave very full accounts of the various mineral discoveries at the new town of Leadville, which found their way to the more widely circulated journals of the East, and attracted the attention of many people. At the close of 1878, a census slowed a total of 5040 persons. The first smelter was established in 1877, at Malta, two miles from Leadville, by A. R. Meyer, but was not successful. It was succeeded by the Harrison Reduction Works, in 1878. The La Plata began with one furnace in June, 1878, and in 1879 had four furnaces in active operation. These furnaces used charcoal for fuel, and, because of hot tops, suffered a tremendous loss in lead and silver. This difficulty was overcome by the erection of 50 single-bank 10-ft. beehive ovens at Crested Butte, Colo., in 1880. The slack coal sent to these ovens was very pure, and yielded a coke carrying as little as 4.5 per cent. ash. Among the pioneers in the Leadville district were Grant, Eddy, James, Billings, Eiler, and Dickson. To these men the West owes the present expansion of its mining industry, and the erection of metallurgical processes for the treatment of precious metals. On Mar. 1, 1876, Pueblo was connected to the Atchison, Topeka & Sank Fe by the Pueblo & Arkansas Valley branch. The first smelter was erected in Pueblo by Mather and Geist. This modest plant grew into the immense Pueblo Smelting and Refining Co., now a part of the American Smelting and Refining Co. Coke for these small furnaces was made from unwashed Engleville coal, in 186 single-bank 12-ft. ovens at El Moro, in the Trinidad district, and it was not uncommon for the percentage of ash to exceed the percentage of fixed carbon in the coke. Single particle breakage tests have been used by a number of researchers to investigate some salient features of the complex comminution process. The characteristics of the common single particle breakage tests such as single impact, double impact and slow compression tests are examined and the results from these tests are compared. A comparison of the results from single particle breakage tests with grindability and ball mill tests is given. Application of the results from single particle breakage tests to modelling industrial comminution processes is described. The necessity for further research into single particle breakage tests to develop a simple but comprehensive technique for estimating the breakage characteristics of ores is discussed.

Nitrogenase activity (C2H2 reduction) was found to be associated with the following grasses in the field: Agropyron dasystachyum, Agropyron smithii, Aristida purpurea, Oryzopsis hymenoides and Stipa comata. Uptake of fixed nitrogen was also demonstrated for these grasses. Two unidentified nitrogen fixing bacteria were isolated, one from Stipa comata and one from Aristida purpurea. Cynodon dactylon and Agropyron cristatum were successfully inoculated with the unknown isolate obtained from Stipa comata. The inoculated plants exhibited nitrogenase activity (C2 H2 reduction) whereas uninoculated controls gave negative results.

A field test was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Cyprus Plateau Starpoint No. 2 Mine. near Price. UT. to study the support rock interaction mechanics. Twelve instrumented. fully grouted roof holts and eight sagmeters were installed in the roadway of a two-entry gate road to measure load changes and roof movements. Readings were taken during section development and as each longwall panel passed the test area. Loads that resulted from development of the en- tries were higher than would be expected if simple suspension of the roof rock was the sole cause of loading. When the first longwall face passed the test section massive beam behavior was exhibited over the entry and adjacent pillar. However, no significant localized bending was detected at any of the strain gauge locations. After the first panel passed the test section. all the roof bolts had at least one zone where the steel had yielded. Loading continued to increase. and when the face from the second panel was adjacent to the test section. 70 pct of the strain gauges at the 6-. 1%. and 30-in locations had passed the yield point of the steel roof bolt. However, even at these high load levels, the supporting pattern was sufficient to provide adequate reinforcement to the mine roof.

Micropiles are routinely used in the United States for foundation support and stabilization of slopes. In recent years, several retaining walls have been constructed using micropiles in an A-frame type configuration to support temporary and permanent excavations at sites with limited access and limited right-of-way. Typical A-frame micropile walls consist of a row of vertical micropiles at the face of the wall and a row of battered micropiles extending into the soil or rock to be retained. The two rows are then tied together with a pile cap such that the front pile acts primarily in bending and the back pile acts primarily in tension. Because of tight right-of-way constraints at a residential site in Aspen, Colorado, it was not possible to construct the wall using conventional shoring systems or micropiles in the typical A-frame configuration. Rather, the wall was designed such that the row of battered piles was installed at the wall face and the row of vertical piles was installed adjacent to the property line behind the wall. As a result of the reverse configuration of the A-frame wall, FLAC, a two-dimensional, finite difference software program, was used to model the soil-structure interaction. The final wall design consisted of both temporary and permanent retaining wall sections with maximum heights of 26 feet. Inclinometers were installed in several piles to monitor the behavior of the retaining walls during and after excavation. This paper presents an overview of the design method, a discussion of construction techniques, and a comparison between the FLAC model and the measured behavior of the wall in the field.

"In recent years much work has been don e to examine alternate underground backfill support systems with the objectives of improving ground support and reducing mining costs. This report deals with the work conducted at Placer Dome Inc.’s Dome Mine to develop a high density backfill system, taking advantage of the unique properties of this fill material, to address a backlog of large open stopes to sustain stable minewide ground conditions for future generations of Dome miners.IntroductionDome Mine began its existence in 1909 with the discovery of visible gold on a dome shaped outcrop located west of Porcupine Lake in northern Ontario. The orebody beneath this outcrop has supported one of Canada’s premier gold mining operations for 80 years. Production during this time of over 46 000 000 tons of ore has resulted in the recovery of II 500 000 ounces of gold and 2 000 000 ounces of silver. Mining continues today at a production rate of 3500 tons per day, with ore coming from both underground and open pit operations.During the life of the mine, different underground mining methods have been used to extract the ore from a complex deposit consisting of single and multiple vein structures.Cut-and-fill mining was introduced in the 1930s using sand fill and later hydraulic fill for support and to provide a working platform. A total of 1 800 000 tons of sand fill and 7 300 000 tons of hydraulic fill have been placed underground in cut-and-fill stopes. Until the late 1960sshrinkage mining was used extensively, particularly in narrow, steeply dipping zones. Bulk mining with small diameter longholes was introduced about this time, to take advantage of low production costs. Longhole blasting has often been used to recover low grade ore from the walls or sills of old shrink stopes, resulting in large open stopes. Backfilling of these open holes has been restricted to smaller stopes and associated with local ground conditions.In the late 1970s it was recognized that the number of large open holes which were being generated presented serious regional and minewide stability problems for future operations. With higher gold prices, economic ore reserves were being tied up in areas adjacent to multi-level open stope complexes. To stabilize these stopes and allow access, backfilling would be required."

The results on the rates of vaporization of Fe-Ni alloys, levitated by an electromagnetic field in a stagnant atmosphere of helium, are shown to be in close agreement with those predicted theoretically. AS shown in Part I of this series of papers, the rates of vaporization of metals enhanced by convection currents are increased further by the process of condensation of metal vapor when there is a steep temperature gradient in the boundary layer. At the time this theoretical work was completed one of the authors (K. C. Mills) had already carried out some experimental work on the rates of vaporization of molten Fe-Ni alloys. The experimental work was done under conditions which make it possible to compare the experimental rate data with those predicted on theoretical grounds. EXPERIMENTAL The object of the experiments was to evaluate the activities in a number of binary metal systems. The details of the experimental technique are given in another paper by Mills, Kinoshita, and Grieveson,2 and, for the present purpose, a brief mention of the relevant features of the experimental method will be adequate. Using an induction coil, the metal weighing about 1 to 1.5 g was levitated by the electromagnetic field in a stagnant atmosphere of pure helium. The helium was freed from oxygen and water vapor in the usual manner, and its pressure in the vaporization chamber was maintained at 1 atm through a bleeder device. The vaporization chamber consisted of a pyrex tube, 2.8 cm diam, with a side arm connected to the helium bleeder. The bottom of the tube, shaped conical, was surrounded by the induction coil, and the top was sealed with an optical flat for the purpose of measuring the melt temperature with a two-color optical pyrometer. By suitable adjustment of the high-frequency power input, the metal was brought to the desired temperature in about 30 sec of levitation. After a specified vaporization time, e.g., 3 to 4 min, the alloy was quenched by switching off the power. The amount of metal vaporized was determined from the difference between the initial and final weights of the sample. During the vaporization time, temperature fluctuations of about ±10°C were observed. COMPARISON OF EXPERIMENTAL DATA WITH THEORETICAL VALUES The experimental results are given in Table I. As already mentioned, the attainment of the vaporization temperature took about 30 sec from the moment of levitation. Therefore, the times recorded in Table I are 30 sec less than the total time; this is considered to be a reasonable estimate of actual vaporization times.

In this paper we revisit the well known "Ultimate Pit Limit Problem" and suggest an alternative approach for fast and efficient solution. We follow the approach originally proposed by Johnson and Barnes (1988), but utilize the "Excess Scaling Algorithm" in solving the equivalent maximum flow problem. This algorithm provides significant increases in speed and reduction in memory requirements over the well known Labeling Algorithm of Ford and Fulkerson (1956), enabling one to solve large problems with relatively small computers. We present results of a series: of benchmark tests using this approach against the well known Lerchs Grossman algorithm as well as a brief description of the new algorithm.

The investigation was undertaken as part of the environmental management programme that must be implemented on mine closure. It involved sampling and analysis of water from boreholes, the tin mine workings, trenches and pits as well as soil and dumps. Both ground- and surface water in the immediate vicinity of the mine was found to have been affected to varying degrees, mainly due to acid drainage from the pyrite dumps. Metal ions and toxic salts are taken into solution with increased acidity and precipitated in the soil when the pH rises again; there are concentrations of metal ions in the soils around the main dumps, but these do not seem to pose a major threat in a regional context. The low groundwater gradients, together with the dyke system in the vicinity of the main dumps and the impermeable nature of the Boschoffsberg rocks, make it unlikely that affected groundwater will migrate further than 1 000 m to the north and north-east. Nonetheless, it has been decided to remove the pyrite dumps

The opening years of the new millennium will be characterised by the closure of many lead and zinc mines because of reserve depletion. However, weak commodity prices through the second half of the 1990s have slowed project evaluation and have made it difficult to raise finances for the development of new mines required to replace lost output and to meet increasing demand for metal in the future. Growth of lead and zinc demand will be determined by the pace of global economic activity, especially in the emerging economies. How rapidly demand grows will have a key bearing on the possible shortfall in mine output and the response of prices to the implied tightening of metal supplies early in the new millennium. These issues are the focus of a discussion of the critical lead and zinc supply developments which will unfold post 2000, taking into account project lead times and the role that recycled metal plays in meeting market demand.

Ecuador's real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 6% in 1976 despite persistent shortages of electrical power and essential fuels, which caused factory slow-downs and shutdowns. Petroleum export earnings, which made up more than 50% of total export value in 19716, totaled $565 million, a 9% increase over those of 1975. A new 60,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery at Esmeraldas was scheduled to go on- stream in mid- 1 97 7, operating entirely on Ecuadorean crude. Corpración Estatal Petró1era Ecualtoriana (CEPE) started construction of a 600-kilometer network of product pipelines which was scheduled to be completed in 1977 to coincide with the completion of the refinery.

Drilling of the active Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse (TAG) deposit during ODP Leg 158 indicated that the size of the mound-stockwork complex is approximately 3.9 million tonnes, including 2.7 million tonnes of massive and semi-massive sulfide (ca. 2% Cu) at the seafloor and 1.2 million tonnes of mineralized breccias (ca. 1% Cu) in a subseafloor stockwork. Quartz-pyrite veining in the stockwork zone extends from about 40 meters below seafloor (mbsf) to a depth of 95 mbsf. Siliceous wallrock breccias in the lower part of the stockwork grade abruptly into chloritized basalt breccias at the margins of the mineralized zone, and massive sulfides at the flanks of the deposit onlap relatively unaltered, partially hematized basalts. The pipe-like dimensions of the stockwork zone do not exceed the diameter of the sulfide mound. Comparisons with samples collected during earlier dive series confirm that the vent complexes at the surface of the mound are not representative of the bulk composition of the deposit. Dramatic vertical zonation of metals within the mound suggests that a long history of hydrothermal reworking has effectively stripped the constituents that are soluble at lower temperatures from the massive sulfides and concentrated them at the top of the deposit through a process of zone refining.

Magnesia-chrome and chrome-magnesia are the most used refractories in contact with iron-rich non-ferrous smelting slags. The corrosion by slag always brings chromium oxide into the slag, causing the precipitation of crystalline phases at the process temperature. This secondary effect of the chromium-bearing refractory dissolution was studied in this work, emphasizing the effect of the other chemical components of the slag at various temperatures. The experimental results showed that the presence of chromium and lead contribute, although in different ways, to the formation of complex spinel phases and their precipitation at temperatures in the range of 1250-1400°C. The XRD and SEM/EDS results were discussed for refractory-slag mixes containing 0-20% Cr2O3 and 0-11% PbO.

The planning, design and construction of a service tunnel, under a major arterial road between two hospitals are described. The multiple uses of the tunnel combine to provide a favourable cost-benefit ratio for the tunnel as part of a rationalisation of services between hospitals. The driven tunnel provides economic, program and approval advantages over that of a cut and cover construction. The cross sectional shape of the tunnel was determined during feasibility studies by the degree of weathering of the Silurian mud- stones, the shallow cover and the proposed excavation equipment as well as the functional requirements. The site investigations covering geotechnical, building, noise and level surveys provided input to the design documentation and construction phases. Monitoring of settlement levels and primary support stresses during early construction stages confirmed the adequacy of the proposed tunnelling methods and support to be used adjacent to the major building foundations. The 140 metre long tunnel was success- fully completed in April 1980 at a cost of $650,000.

A wireless blasting system for tunnel construction which consists of a loop antenna, oscillator and blaster, has been developed. The basic technology of this method had been studied in the 1970s to develop a wireless initiation system for undersea blasting and has been successfully used as a Remote Controlled (RCB) system in the Honshu/ Shikoku Bridge construction project in Japan.
