The fire-clays of New Jersey belong in two geological ages, the cretaceous and quaternary, or post-tertiary. Three very small deposits of plastic clays have been discovered within the limits of the Archæan rocks. These are not refractory and of little importance, excepting in a geological consideration. They have resulted from a decomposition of the feldspars of the rock in situ, and they have been classified as inferior kaolins.

Recent work by the authors1 established the constitutional diagram of the gold-germanium system. Of particular interest in the simple euctectiferous system was the eutectic alloy at 12 per cent Ge, which melted at the very low temperature of 356°C and had an unusually fine eutectic structure. It was of interest to investigate the effect of third components on the melting point, microstructure, and strength of this alloy, and in this work the effect of copper is discussed rather completely, with less complete data on the effects of silver, platinum, nickel, and zinc. No reference in the literature has been found on ternary systems with gold-germanium. Materials and Alloying -4s in the work on the binary system, gold-germanium, the germanium used in this investigation was the cyanide-reduced, 99.9 per cent product, produced by the Eagle-Picher Co. Fine gold sheet from Handy and Harmon, pure platinum sheet from the American Platinum Works, copper magnet wire from Anaconda, nickel wire assaying 99.6 per cent Ni. and electrolytic zinc were used for alloying. To make the alloys, charges of the pure metals were put in a graphite crucible and melted in an atmosphere of pure hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to about I050 C, and the metal allowed to freeze in the crucible. Except with alloys containing zinc, melting losses were consistently less than a few milligrams. When zinc was a component, weight losses up to half the weight of the zinc present were incurred, and the alloy compositions were calculated by assuming the entire weight loss to be that of zinc. In all other cases the composition of the alloys could safely be taken as that of the charge. The ingots, as solidified, were segregated, the heavier primary phases being at the bottom and sides of the ingots and the lighter primary phases at the top, but by sectioning the entire ingot vertically for microscopic examination, this factor could be evaluated. Ingots for microscopic examination weighed one gram, and those for thermal analysis weighed three grams. Thermal Analysis In this work, the eutectic line composition and thermal arrests were desired, and, after microscopic exploration had established the position of the eutectic line at a given percentage of the third component, a thermal analysis was run at that composition. The method of thermal analysis used in the work on the binary Au-Ge system,' a method particularly well suited for a small quantity of material, was used in this work. In March of 1994, Dynatec Mining Limited entered into a contract with PCL Civil Constructors to carry out the underground excavations for the Algonquin Power Corporation’s15 Megawatt Nagagami hydro-electric power station located near Hearst, Ontario, Canada. Dynatec completed the work for this project in early October 1995. Dynatec Mining Limited’s work included the excavation of a 175 meter long penstock driven at a grade of -25% to a 4000 m3 powerhouse located 50 meters below the intake elevation. A 1200 meter long tailrace was driven from the Nagagami River to connect with the powerhouse. Two 50 meter raises were driven from the powerhouse to surface to pro-vide access for equipment and personnel. The excavation of the tailrace tunnel(5.8m x 5.9m) was completed using Dynatec’s Long Round Jumbo Technology.

The properties of quartz, calcite, magnezite and dolomite suspensions prepared from -30 µm size fractions of these minerals have been investigated. Selective coagulation of the quartz-calcite, quartz-magnezite and quartz-dolomite binary suspensions was possible at the pH values slightly above those for the i.e.p. of the carbonate minerals. The tests revealed that quartz suspensions were not flocculated by the anionic flocculants, whereas the same polymers were flocculants for calcite, magnezite and dolomite. Selectivity in the flocculation of the quartz-calcite, quartz-magnezite and quartz-dolomite binary suspensions was not, however, satisfactory because of the activation of quartz by ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. Dispersing reagents can be used to improve the selectivity of flocculation.

We show that the prioritization of business improvement and performance management decisions may be significantly improved by taking into account the systemic effects of changes made in a single process area. To do so we build a model of a mining value chain, taking into account consequential downtime that arises from downstream and upstream starvation and choking effects of each activity. Introducing the concept of internal capacity, this approach yields insight into the relative importance of key metrics such as loading and hauling rates. We suggest that a holistic view of this type should be a core component of business improvement and performance management decisions. During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impractical and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5 level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5 level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin. The No. 2 interior ore shaft was only developed below No. 4 level and borehole ropeways with a winder located on the surface were installed in preference to an underground winder installation. No. 2 ore shaft with borehole ropeways commenced lead ore hoisting operations in September 1938. Apart from the copper ore hoisted in the war years of 1943-46, lead ore was hoisted to No. 5 level until September, 1951.

This work investigated the effect of the concentration of CO2 and lead contamination on the forest ecosystem. Changes of the plant growth, lead concentration in soil, plant, and soil microbial community caused by CO2 concentration (380 ppm and 760 ppm) and lead contamination (500 mg/kg) were measured. Plant growth was inhibited by 50% due to lead contamination. Particularly, shoot growth was inhibited more than the root. However, the root elongation was not affected by the CO2 concentration increase. The diversity of microbial population with AWCD (Average Well Color Development) and PCA (Principle Component Analysis) showed that the lead contamination has an effect com-pared to CO2 concentration. The Shannon index calculated from DGGE profiles was high in soil with Pinus densiflora, while the effect of CO2 concentration was not significant (P<0.5). The similarity of microbial community from each treatment showed that lead has an effect on plant growth and microbial community rather than the CO2 concentration.

The Fola Coal Co., LLC No 2 surface mine, located in Nicholas and Clay Counties, WV, exploits up to nine coal seams by contour, highwall, and mountain top removal mining methods. After encountering faults, areas of highly fractured coal, and subsidence failures. the mine requested a lineament analysis from the Mine Safety & Health Administration&apos;s (Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center) Roof Control Division. The 31 km2 study area was viewed on a LANDSAT-5 band 4 (near infrared, 0.76-0.90 µm wavelength) satellite image with ERDAS Imagine 8.4 software. The software allows image examination under artificial sun azimuths and elevations, resulting in variable tonal characteristics. The study area image was viewed in 45° azimuthal increments from 000° to 315° at artificial sun angles of 10°, 30°, 50°, and 70°, yielding 32 separate images. The interpretation process developed by MSHA Roof Control personnel identified 16 northeast-striking and one northwest-striking lineament that intersected mine property. Faults and areas of roof instability corresponded well with lineaments identified in the study. Successful lineament identification prompted mine management to incorporate lineament analysis as a mine-planning tool for adjacent property, thereby identifying in advance areas that could adversely affect safety and production.

Blocking. (5) The “blocking” of boulders is a much cheaper way of breaking them up than “mud capping.” It should always be used in preference to that method except when too much time will be consumed by a crew of men waiting for the drilling to be done, as shown in example of cost No. 1, as given under “mud capping.” Under such circumstances the time consumed would be a greater cost to the contractor than the extra amount of dynamite. Then, too, on large thin boulders to drill one hole would result only in breaking the stone into such pieces as would again have to be broken; and the many holes might equal the cost of extra dynamite. Under such circumstances if method (6) cannot be used, “mud capping” will have to be resorted to, to do the work economically.

An experimental investigation was conducted to study the response of soft, porous rock, green shale, under dry and liquid-filled conditions to normal impact of hemispherically-tipped cylindrical steel projectiles with diameter and mass of 6.35 mm and 31 g, respectively. Disk-shaped green shale specimens with nominal thickness and diameter of 32 mm and 127 mm, respectively, were tested in the initial projectile velocity range of 18 to 42 m/s. For the liquid-filled tests, the green shale specimens were saturated with kerosene. A total of eight impact tests were conducted. Information on the extent and pattern of the damage in the rock and velocity histories of the projectiles were collected. It was found that while the penetration depth was quadratically related to the initial projectile kinetic energy for the dry case, the penetration depth for the liquid-filled case was directly proportional to the initial projectile kinetic energy. The results of the impact tests under dry and liquid-filled conditions conformed well to a linearly viscous model and a Coulomb frictional model, respectively. The major deformation processes in the dry specimens were found to be compaction and equivolumnial distortion of the material. In the liquid-filled case, however, formation of cracks and equivolumnial distortion with less material compaction were observed. Furthermore, craters were formed as a result of the crack formation in the liquid-filled specimens.

A High Splint coal was carbonized in a low-temperature, fluidized-bed sys-tem to study the effects of thermal cracking on the products of decomposition. The coal was fluidized in recycle gas at 485° to 600° C, and the products were cracked at 600°, 700°, and 800° C in a bed of fluidized coke. Yields of tar, pitch, paraffins, and olefins decreased as carbonization temperature increased. Thermal cracking of the tar vapors produced the highest tar yields at 600° C, and light oil yield increased at cracking temperatures up to 700° C. At an 800° C cracking temperature, the yield of light oil decreased.

Underground longwall coal mines depend on conveyor haulage to transport large volumes of coal from the longwall face conveyor to the mine portal. In the last few years, the need for longer and larger longwall panel conveyors has become very significant. In order to keep conveyor equipment to a minimum and still transport higher tonnages over longer lengths, intermediate drive technology has been developed. The use of DC motors and controls in conjunction with load sharing techniques have a1 so proven effective. A case study of a new longwall panel conveyor at Utah Fuel&apos;s Skyline Mine incorporating these design techniques will be presented.

ThRee great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba, Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.&apos; The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled, Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surfi-cia1 ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2

Fluid inclusions and sulfur isotopic compositions were studied in a possible extension of the Toyoha polymetallic vein deposit. The objective of this work was to gain a better understanding of the ore depositional conditions, sources of ore constituents, and distribution of mineralizing fluid in the region. Fluid inclusions in sphalerite and quartz show that most homogenization temperatures range between 190¦ and 290¦C. Most salinities range from 0.0 to 3.4 wt per cent NaCl equiv. Sulfur isotopic compositions of ore minerals (pyrite, sphalerite and galena), determined by a conventional technique, range between 1.3 and 7.7 per mil. The mineralizing fluids were characterized by relatively low and various temperatures and low to moderate salinities compared to those at the southeast region of the main ore bodies (Izumo and Shinano veins) where rare elements such as tin, tungsten and indium occurred. Obtained temperatures and salinities were attributed to the mixing of hydrothermal fluids with groundwater. Sulfur isotopic data suggest sulfide sulfur was of magmatic origin. Isotopic temperatures, estimated from the isotopic fractionation factor between sphalerite and coexisting galena, are between 195¦ and 322¦C. The temperatures are only consistent with fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures in sphalerite or coexisting quartz when sphalerite was a honey-yellow coarse crystal lacking conspicuous colored growth bands. This suggests the detailed classification of mineral pairs growth textures will be necessary for precise in situ measurements to obtain reasonable eothermometric results.
