IT is well known that one of the cornerstones of economic theory is the so-called law of supply and demand, which, really, is a group of economic laws, one of which may be succinctly stated A rise in price tends, sooner or later, to increase supply. It is the fear that, in the case of petroleum, a limited' natural resource, a point will soon be reached when supply will not respond adequately to price advances, which in recent years has prompted a movement for oil conservation. This movement has lately taken concrete shape in the appointment of 'a Federal Oil Conservation Board by the President. An important aspect of the law of supply and demand is that the supply of any commodity, is not an entity per se, but is a factor of price. Supply, without the specification of, price, has no exact meaning; and, in practice supply cannot be divorced from considerations of price. Mathematically, supply may be expressed by the formula SP, which means that supply varies with price, just as the value of 10 raised to the x power varies with x. In its technical usage, supply is the, quantity of a commodity that is bought currently on the market at a given price. In the case of a natural resource, however, this quantity will eventually depend not alone on price but on the physical volume of the reserve that exists and that, in consequence, can respond to the stimulus of price. If this reserve is fixed in size, we must sooner or later reach a point where supply can no longer respond to price in the usual degree and a permanent shortage will develop which no advance in price can correct, except in so far as higher prices may curtail demand or improve the efficiency of utilization. This statement brings us to the examination of amore fundamental aspect of the law of supply and demand as applied to natural resources; namely, that natural-resource reserves are not fixed in size: just as the current supply of a natural-resource commodity is a function of price, so its reserve is likewise a resultant of price. Natural-resource reserves; therefore, have no exact meaning without the specification of price, and in practice their measurement. cannot be divorced from considerations of

In those days no one worried - there were plenty of other things to do. But in'these days it is different. Everyone worries- and. because there is so much worry, emotion has entered the picture. And, worse than that, capital is being made in political circles. People who were quite unaware, five years ago, that any problem existed, have now become experts on the subject, and shout to high heaven that something should be done - and yet they go on using the leaded high octane petrol they deplore so much. And even scientists, who should know better, adduce only such evidence as fits the argument in hand. And the Press is not without blame - some of its reportings is open to serious question, whatever may be the excellence of its motives. The point is made that one should know what one is talking about. And make sure that the evidence quoted is fact - and make sure too, that all the evidence is used, not only that which suita the argument.

A mathematical model is presented and solved for determinution of the saturation distribution and pressure in a radial gas-storage reservoir. The model consists basically of two parts: (I) the growing gas-bubble core, and (2) the surrounding aquifer. Since the total pressure at the injection well is a function of the two-phase flow in the gas bubble and the unsteady single-phase flow in the aquifer, the resistance to flow in both zones was taken into consideration. The assumptions involved for both the radial equivalent of the Buckley-Leverett two-phase-flow equation and the injection-pressure equation are as follows: (I) the geometry is radial, (2) the gas bubble is free to expand or contract, (3) compression or expansion of the gas within the bubble may occur at the beginning of a time step, (4) the fluids are immiscible, (5) water is incompressible within the gas-storage region whereas it is compressible outside of this region, (6) a stable gas-water interface exists and (7) gas injection occurs at a constant rate or a series of constant rates. The mathematical model was solved numerically using an IBM 650 computer. A comparison is presented between the predicted results of the model, the results assuming steady-state flow and the actual initial injection-pressure history of an operating reservoir. Using the initial field pressure for a basis, the average deviation between the predicted pressure and the actual field pressure was less than 4.3 per cent. INTRODUCTION Underground storage of natural gas in abandoned oil fields, in abandoned coal mines, in caverns and in aquifers has had varying degrees of success. The lack of these first three facilities in the vicinity of most major gas marketing areas is leading more and more to storage in virgin aquifers. For the most part, this storage in aquifers has led to the study upon which this paper is based. Several excellent papers have been published discussing the problems involved in the underground storage of natural gas; however, to these writers' knowledge, none of them considered the two-phase flow of fluids in the gas bubble and the fact that the gas bubble will grow or shrink in size depending upon the injection and withdrawal history of the reservoir. Not only will both of these factors influence the required injection pressure, but also they will have a definite bearing upon the amount of water production occurring upon withdrawal from the storage area. To solve this problem on an IBM 650 computer, several simplifying assumptions were made. Only the drainage portion of the relative-permeability curve was considered, thereby neglecting any hysteresis effects introduced during an imbibition cycle. The quantity of gas withdrawn during the period of the field study was only a small percentage of the total gas in place; therefore, this assumption is justified. For the problem studied in this case, the combined effects of capillarity and gravity were assumed to be negligible. This assumption becomes less valid as the formation thickness or the average pore diameter increases markedly. The justification of these assumptions should be studied in each case. THEORY This mathematical model for the prediction of saturation distribution and pressure for a radial gas-storage aquifer is based upon the equations for radial two-phase fluid flow'.' and for radial, unsteady-state, single-phase fluid flow.' The two-phase flow is considered to take place in a "core" whose radius is equal to the maximum radius that the gas zone will attain, as indicated in Fig. 1. The injection-withdrawal history is approximated by a series of constant flow rates. Within the "core", gas is assumed to behave as a semi-compressible fluid; that is, the gas is assumed to have a constant density based on the average gas-zone pressure for the flow period. Between each constant-rate time increment, the gas density is allowed to change. This involves an iterative solution of the pressure equation. The liquid phase in this zone is considered to be incompressible, whereas it behaves as a compressible liquid outside of this region. Jointing of steel rods in reinforced concrete structures needs careful consideration as it renders the structure weak at the joint. The jointing is usually done at sections of structural members, where the bending moment and shear force are least. Jointing is done either by overlapping the rods or welding or by mechanical splicing. A novel method of jointing them is by inserting the two rods in a steel sleeve and cladding it on to the rods by subjecting the sleeve to explosive energy. A rod jointed in this fashion is tested for direct tension and bending when used in a reinforced concrete beam. The test results show that it is an effective method. The advantage is that a number of joints can be made in a single operation.

In order to maintain an accurate survey underground, it is first necessary to connect all shafts used for the transferring of the survey to the levels below by a precise surface survey.This has been achieved at Mount Isa by a careful triangulation survey with stations adjacent to those shafts most suitably located for transferring the survey below.The precedure used is described herein.The Weisbach triangle commonly used is obtained by reading to swingirig wires, the theodolite being placed in line with them as nearly as is possible. The surveyor at the surface places the wires in the shaft as far apart as the size of the shaft will permit, with sufficient space between the wires and walls to ensure their swinging freely. The far wire is fixed in position, while the near one is movable by means of fine adjusting screws to facilitate its being brought into line with the fixed wire and the theodolite. When this is done the surveyor at the lower level is advised by pre-arranged signals and the survey can then commence.The surface portion of the survey is simple; all that is necessary being to read the angle from the backsight to the wires, measure their distance from the theodolite, and keep a check on them throughout the survey to make sure that no movement takes place.The lower portion of the survey is more difficult, the surveyor first qf all having to place his theodolite as nearly as possible in line with the wires.

Recent works by Plaksh et al.,1,2 Glembotsky,3 and others have renewed interest in the effects of oxidation on the surface activity of the sulfides. Since considerable supporting data are available on galena-potassium ethyl xanthate, this system is being studied at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology by contact angle measurement, using the technique of McGlashan and McLeod.4 The contact-angle method is well adapted to investigation of the influence of small amounts of oxygen on the establishment of a stable contact angle on galena in potassium ethyl xanthate solution. Samples of massive galena containing less than 0.001 pct Cu, 0.001 pct Ag, and 0.01 pct Zn are mounted in castable plastic and ground and polished manually in a glove box containing the desired proportions of oxygen and purified nitrogen. Oxygen and nitrogen contents of the test atmosphere are determined with an Orsatt analyzer. In this way a reproducible surface is created in contact with whatever oxygen concentration is desired. Water and all reagents are prepared and stored in the test atmosphere. An absorbent is used to control carbon dioxide that might be present. Final polishing is done with levigated alumina on a glass plate. The prepared sample is placed in the test solution and transferred to the contact angle apparatus in a sealed box, and the test is conducted while both sample and solution are maintained under a slight positive pressure of the test atmosphere. Table I gives the results of contact angle measurements made at various 02-Nz concentrations.5 Each value of contact angle is the average of at least six individual measurements made with different bubbles at different locations on the sample surface. A period of 20 to 25 min has been found by preliminary tests to be sufficient to permit develop- ment of maximum angle, and all measurements are made after at least this much time has elapsed. Exposure of prepared samples to pure water under the test atmosphere before exposure to the xanthate results in a small but measureable and consistent reduction in contact angle. This is particularly true in the oxygen-deficient atmospheres; for example, at 2.2 pct O2 such water contact reduces the average angle about 8" from that obtained by immediate testing in xanthate. The general trend of increasing contact angle with increasing oxygen concentration corresponds to the results of Plaksin et a12 The absence of diminish-ment of contact angle at very high oxygen concentration has been attributed to the high concentration of xanthate per unit of galena surface: At oxygen concentrations below 1 pct (the limit of accuracy of the Orsatt analyzer), no contact angle is obtained. Furthermore, no contact angle is obtained at any oxygen concentration in the absence of xanthate. This result seems to be in disagreement with those cited by Plaksin.1 Further work on the interaction of galena and potassium ethyl xanthate or a similar collector as influenced by oxygen is contemplated. The true nature of the interrelation is as yet unknown. For example, it is not known whether the governing oxygen reaction is with the mineral, with the reagent, or with both.

This is not the case. Sulfur is not a problem as long as the mole ratio of sulfur to alkali oxides is less than, or equal to, 1. This is attributed to the sulfur preferentially combining with the alkali oxides and not acting as a clogging agent due to the nature of the pre-heater vessels. Where the mole ratio exceeds 1, many methods are available to eliminate or reduce the clogging problems such as using the preheater bypass or a precalciner with up to 100% kiln gas bypass. In non-preheater kilns, the presence of sulfates is hardly ever a problem anyhow. Thus, the level of sulfur in the fuel and raw material that might cause problems is not a fixed amount, but is predictable. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the economics of conversion of kilns in the Indonesian and Phillippine cement industries from oil firing to coal firing. This economic analysis has very little to do with the sulfur levels. Thus, the section of the paper on sulfates is actually rather meaningless. The economic analysis is also rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow accepted economic analysis procedures by including interest charges. They have fallen into the trap of confusing financing with economic evaluation. When the accepted methods of economic evaluation are used, the return on investment increases to about 35%. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous.

Chemical Mechanical polishing, or CMP, has four components in the polishing interface; namely the polishing pad, the polishing fluid, the abrasives in the fluid, and the surface being polished. Understanding the way that load is transferred between these components is key to understanding and predicting wafer polishing. Numerous models of CMP and the different load sharing arrangements which occur between these four components have been proposed. These include models by Luo and Dornfield (1) and Fu, Chandra and colleagues (2). Other models focus on just one or two loading arrangements, such as `hydroplaning' when all load is transmitted by the liquid in the case of Runnels and Eyman (3). In this work, we consider four possible combinations of load transfer from pad to wafer in CMP. These combinations are listed below in Table 1 and are illustrated schematically in Figure 1. It is important to note the role of scale in this process; the illustrations in Figure 1 are drawn to scale from actual profilometer scans obtained over a length of 5 with particles of 150 nm in diameter. For instance, in hydroplaning, or hydrodynamic lubrication, the lateral force exerted on the polished surface by the particles can be no higher than the fluid shear force developed in the gap between the pad and wafer. This is not expected to generate high rates of material removal from the surface (4). For contact that is largely between the pad and the wafer, such as the regime depicted in Figure ld, the lateral load is transmitted to the wafer by the pad and is hence limited by the pad's low rigidity. This regime is not expected to generate high material removal rates either. The highest levels of material removal are expected from regimes where the mechanical load exerted on the system is transmitted by the particles, in combination with either the fluid or the pad. Under what circumstances does the polishing regime change from one to another? What must occur in order to initiate or terminate contact between the system components? This is an ongoing question in the field of tribology, and has traditionally been viewed in terms of the pressure and velocity applied to the system, the thickness of the fluid film between the two surfaces, and the roughness of those surfaces (4). In this paper, we propose a new mechanism ? that the load on the particles may be sufficient to totally embed them in the polishing pad, at which point they are no longer able to transmit load and polish the wafer surface. This is illustrated schematically in Figure 1(d).

Texasgu1f's Lee Creek Mine in Eastern North Carolina is usin8 a combination Dredge-Dragline method for mining deep phosphate ore at a rate of 8.5 million tons per year. The matrix is thick, uniform in grade, and is processed into agricultural products. As in many other good mineral deposits, there are tough obstacles to overcome in recovering the ore. The deposit is in an area with a land surface of about ten feet above sea level, is close to tidewater, is overlain with 90 to 130 feet of unconsolidated overburden, and is underlain by an artesian aquifer with over 140 feet of natural hydrostatic head at the bottom of the bed, The upper 40 feet of overburden will not support stripping equipment and is unstable when cast as spoil. Barriers are emplaced to prevent flooding from hurricane tides. The ground water problems have been successfully controlled by pumping 60 million gallons per day from the aquifer. Only recently have the severe ground problems been overcome by this unusual Dredge-Dragline combination of mining equipment.

Hard-metal inserts have received considerable attention in the mining industry recently for a variety of excavating and penetrating purposes. Their use in percussive drilling and in coal cutting machines is well known, but attempts to utilize them in cutting materials such as dimension stone have been discouraging because of excessive tool wear and failure. Particular attention is given to those properties of hard-metal inserts that affect their resistance to wear. A consideration of the actual wear mechanism shows the importance of correct mounting of the inserts and of the selection of suitably powered driving motor so as to achieve minimum tool wear and maximum tool life. Comparisons are made between the performances of types of hard-metal inserts, relating their inherent properties with results obtained in laboratory tests. As part of a broad program to improve the quarrying and processing of industrial minerals, The Pennsylvania State University has been investigating the machinability of slate under laboratory and field conditions. It should be emphasized that the results of the research presented in this paper are also applicable to other natural structural materials, and particularly to the more workable ones such as limestone and sandstone. Improvements which accrue in cutting and sawing should prove of benefit to all the dimension stone industry. Further, it may be pointed out that the results reported here are applicable to rotary drilling (with drag bits) as well as to cutting and sawing of rock. INVESTIGATIONS IN RELATED FIELDS The investigation was initiated with an extensive survey of available literature related to metal cutting and to rotary drilling. The following similar features between metal cutting and slate cutting became evident: 1) Hard-metal inserts are widely used as a cutting tool in both cases. 2) The forces acting on the tool may be resolved into normal and tangential components. 3) Rate of penetration and tool wear are important criteria in each case. On the other hand, important differences also exist: 1) Most metals, exhibit plastic behavior, while slate (and most rock) is a brittle material under normal conditions. 2) In metal cutting the component of force acting parallel to the surface of the workpiece is considerably greater than the force holding the tool against the workpiece. 111 slate cutting, this situation is reversed. Similarities between drag-bit rotary drilling and slate cutting are as follows: 1) In both casts, a tool, usually of the hard-metal insert type, is used to penetrate a brittle material. 2) The drilling forces and related variables, such as rotation speed, are similar. 3) Chip formation in each case is essentially the same. 4) The shape of the tool is similar in rotary drilling and slate cutting. Important differences are also apparent: 1) The objective of drilling is to produce a directed hole, while in cutting it is to form a kerf. In core drilling, however, a kerf is also produced. 2) The horizonta1 component of force in rotary drilling decreases from the center to the outside of the tool, whereas in slate cutting the component is almost uniformly distributed across the width of the tool. 3) The power absorbed in the drill rod is greater in rotary drilling. 4) The clogging action of chips, if excessive power is applied to the tool and if flushing is insufficient, is more serious in rotary drilling. Because of the striking similarities between metal cutting and slate cutting, and between rotary drilling and slate cutting, it was considered that the findings of investigators in those fields would serve as a guide for experimental studies of slate cutting. The following is thus devoted to a discussion of those aspects of metal cutting and rotary drilling pertinent to the present investigations.

Experience with the ASC multipoint gas lift system was obtained in Colonia zone of the West Montalvo field near Oxnard, Calif. The wells in this pool produce from depths varying from 10,500 to 12,000 ft. Oil gravity is generally 14 to 15' API with a few extremes of 12 and 20" API. Some salt water is produced which causes some very viscous emulsions. Viscosities at 150F (which is the approximate wellhead temperature) vary from 5,000 to 100,000 SSU. Most of the production is by gas lift, although a few wells are produced by rod and hydraulic pump. About half of the gas-lift wells are on continuous flow and the remainder are on intermittent lift using large, ported, pilot-operated valves for single-point transfer of gas from casing to tubing. Gas-liquid ratios vary from about 6 to 10 Mcf/bbl of gross fluid lifted. Wells are produced to a 450-psi trap system. The following remarks will be confined to intermittent lift only, since this is the type of lift which has been achieved with the ASC valve system. The maximum gross fluid which has been produced by single-point intermittent lift is about 350 B/D in 3-in. tubing and 200 B/D in 21/2-in. tubing with gas-liquid ratios of approximately 7 to 9 Mcf/bbl. Some design changes could reduce this ratio. The ASC multipoint system has provided production as high as 480 BOPD in 21/2-in. tubing with gas-liquid ratios just under 4 Mcf/bbl. To be able to apply the multipoint system, it is recommended that a detailed explanation be obtained concerning transition-point pressure and stabilizer setting—what its significance is to the string design, how it may work for or against the operation of the well, how it is related to tubing sensitivity and how it affects the unloading operation. The unloading operation may only be of academic interest in a technical paper, but to the production foreman, unloading and setting the valves in operation is a very real problem and should be understood in detail. One item touched lightly in the paper was the unloading valve. This valve controls the maximum pressure at which the well can be operated. When lifting heavy viscous fluids, it is most important to set this valve for the maximum possible realistic operating pressure at the surface. If the well lifts easily, it is simple to set the ASC valves at a lower operating pressure and the unloading valve will remain closed; but if the well happens to be heavier to lift than anticipated, it may be desirable to operate on the unloading valve itself and use all the energy obtainable at the bottom of the hole. In the Colonia pool very heavy wet-gas gradients are experienced due to the viscosity of the liquid and the dense mist which is left behind a slug of fluid. There are many combination strings of 3- and 21/2-in. tubing. This aggravates the wet-gas gradient problem and provides wet-gas gradients of about 50 to 70 psi/1,000. An advantage which multipoint lift has provided is increased slug efficiency through better maintenance of pressure under the slug and decreased fall back as the slug passes up the tubing. By using multipoint injection, wet-gas gradients have been reduced to about 30 psi/1,000. This has reduced bottom-hole operating pressure and given a production increase. The ASC valve is not a simple device. It's operation is difficult to understand, and it must be understood to be used efficiently in gas-lift design. Operating problems are difficult to diagnose—whether they be caused by the fluid lifted, valve malfunction, lift gas rate, or operating pressure. Calculations and reasoning are required to find out what is causing the problem. Inherent in the ASC valve is the inability to create large pressure differentials across a slug. Large differentials may be required to overcome the inertia of very viscous fluid as it is being accelerated in the bottom of the hole. This is tied back to the design of the unloading valve and is one reason for the importance of setting the unloading valve for the highest possible operating pressure. ~u; to the narrow spread the ASC valves provide, it is impossible to cycle slower than about 24 cycles/day on choke control. If small production of 150 BOPD and less is expected, a surface time-cycle controller will be required if the most economical operation is to be achieved. To achieve a satisfactory operation, the operator must keep a record of any changes made in the operating pressure of the ASC valves. Anything which may cause changes in casing pressure in excess of the stabilizer setting will change the valve operating pressure, and if this is not noted from daily inspection of the well casing-tubing pressure recorder charts, the operator will lose control of the well. Significant results can be achieved using ASC valves; however, considerable knowledge is required to design with them, and attention to detail is required for satisfactory field operation.

The minerals barite (BaSO4-barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO3-barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modern industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry which in 1980 consumed at least 90% of the world's production of 8.8 million tons as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid, called mud, that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The remaining 10% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite occurs throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity filling, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world's demand for barite is expected to increase, and geologic circumstances are favorable for the discovery of new deposits of commercial value. Witherite is much less common and abundant than barite, although it is more desirable in many ways as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals. The United States has not produced witherite since about 1950; England is currently the chief producer of witherite. End Uses Most of the world's barite production since 1926 has been used as a weighting agent for the muds circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The muds fundamentally are mixtures of water, clay, and barite in different proportions that vary according to local reservoir conditions. Muds with a specific gravity as great as 2.5 are used. The mud is pumped down the hollow drill stem, passes through the bit at the bottom of the hole, and rises to the surface in the space between the drill stem and the wall of the hole. In the course of this circulation the drill bit is cooled, cuttings are removed, the drill stem is lubricated, the walls of the hole are sealed, and the hydrostatic head of the column of weighted fluid helps to confine high oil and gas pressures. The latter feature aids in prevention of gushers, thus reducing both environmental pollution and waste of oil and gas resources as well as conserving the natural reservoir pressure for greater production and rate of recovery of the products contained in the rocks. Barite is particularly well suited for drilling mud because it is clean, easy to handle, soft (nonabrasive), heavy, virtually inert chemically, and relatively inexpensive compared to many other available heavy materials. Barite is used in the manufacture of glass in continuous tanks. The addition of barite homogenizes the melt and gives greater brilliance and clarity to the finished glass. Ground barite, both unbleached and bleached by sulfuric acid, is a common industrial filler, extender, and weighting agent. The rubber industry is a major consumer of barite as a filler. Barite also is added to bristolboard, heavy printing paper, playing cards, rope finishes, brake linings, clutch facings, plastics, and linoleum, to name but a few uses. Bleached barite has long been an extender in white lead paint because of its weight. The low index of refraction of barite, however, makes its ability to cover marks poorer than some other substances, but its low capacity for absorption of oil is a good feature. Off-color or unbleached barite can be used as a filler in colored paints. In the construction industry, some lump barite is used in concrete aggregate to weigh down pipelines buried in marshy areas and to shield nuclear reactors. PfANN1 has shown that when a cylinder of molten binary alloy freezes directionally, the solute distribution can be described analytically by cg=k(l-g)k-1 [1] in which Cg is the solute concentration in the solid at the point where a fraction g of the original liquid has frozen and Co is the initial solute concentration. The term k is the effective distribution coefficient of the solute and is defined as the ratio Cx/CL where Cl is the solute concentration in the main body of the liquid. Both the slope and the intercept at -log (1 - g) = 0 of a logarithmic plot of Eq. [I.] provide a measure of k. Under conditions of freezing where diffusion in the solid is negligible and the solute concentration in the liquid is uniform, the effective distribution coefficient k, derived as above, is equal to the equilibrium distribution coefficient taken from the phase diagram. However, under ordinary freezing conditions, even though solid-state diffusion is negligible, the solute rejected from the freezing solid does not have sufficient time to diffuse uniformly throughout the main body of the liquid. A concentration gradient is formed in a boundary layer in front of the advancing solid-liquid interface as pointed out by Rutter and Chalmers.' Thus, under these conditions, the concentration of the freezing liquid in the boundary layer is higher than that predicted from the equilibrium phase diagram and consequently the effective distribution coefficient k, obtained from directional freezing experiments, is larger than the equilibrium distribution coefficient. The symbol k will designate the effective distribution coefficient in the discussion which follows. In this paper, the determination of the effective distribution coefficient is demonstrated for several dilute binary alloys and a polynary magnesium alloy. The effect of freezing rate on the value of the derived k is presented in detail. An example for the calculation of the solidus in a dilute binary solution using the experimentally determined effective distribution coefficient is given. MATERIALS STUDIED Binary magnesium alloys of copper, nickel, and zinc containing approximately 0.10 wt pct solute and a polynary alloy containing approximately 0.10 wt pct each of several elements were selected for study. The spectrographic analyses of these alloys are given in Table I. The analyses are believed accurate to within +5 pct of the stated value. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Extruded rods of the alloys, 3/8 in. in diam and 11 in. long were used for directional freezing studies. The alloy rods were melted horizontally in a high-purity graphite boat by a Nichrome-wound tube furnace which moved parallel to the length of the rod. The boat was supported inside a Vycor tube suitably connected to provide a protective atmosphere of dry SO2. For an experimental run, the following procedure was used. The alloy rod was cleaned in dilute HNO, and dried. The graphite boat containing the alloy rod was placed within the Vycor tube and the tube connected to the gas train' The 'ystem was purged for 20 min with dry argon and then a flow of dried SO, was maintained for the duration of the run. The movable furnace was positioned and either all or a desired portion of the alloy rod was melted. After attainment of steady-state temperature gradients the molten bar was solidified from one end to the other at a controlled rate by pulling the furnace along the length of the bar at the desired speed. At the conclusion of the run, the directionally frozen alloy rod was analyzed spectrographically at 1 1/4-in. intervals.

An instrument capable of measuring subsurface flow rates is described. The instrument is self-contained and may be run on piano wire line. It detects flow by means of an impeller suspended between two torsion wires. The force of the well fluid striking the impeller causes the impeller to rotate, exerting a torsional force to the wires. This force is determined by recording the angle of rotation of the impeller on film using a battery-driven, clock-controlled camera. The impeller is sensitive to flow in either direction and the same instrument can be used to measure injection as well as production rates. Changes in direction of flow, such as might be caused by thief zones, are measurable and are indicated by a reversal of the direction of rotation of the impeller. Adjustment of the sensitivity of the instrument to measure a wide range of flow rates is accomplished by the use of different size torsion wires. An umbrella-type fluid trap, which contacts the casing or wellbore, diverts the flow through the flow tube. The fluid trap remains closed while rurrning in the hole and can be opened at any point in the well. The instrument with the trap closed is 1 3/4 in. OD and may be run through 2 in. tubing. Successful flow profiles have been made on wells with flow rates ranging from 60 BID to 4,000 B/D at surface pressure up to 4,500 psi. The instrument is designed for high-pressure and high-temperature operations. INTRODUCTION The need for an instrument that will measure flow rates in a wellbore is as old as reservoir engineering itself. A number of such devices have been designed within the past few years. Some of these have been described in the literature1,2,3,4,5,6 One of these devices1. a hot-wire anemometer type, made many successful jobs in dry gas producing areas. Difficulty was encountered when this flowmeter was used in wells producing liquids and development work was initiated to overcome this difficulty. The present flowmeter is the result of this work and provides an instrument with a wider range of application in the industry. Consider- able development work has been done on the tool involving many changes in the mechanics of recording the flow readings, however, the basic principle of flow detection has remained the same since its inception. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION The basic principle of operation of the flowmeter is the utilization of a portion of the kinetic energy of flowing well fluid to impart a rotational force to an impeller suspended between two torsion wires. This impeller, Fig. 1, is a screw-type propeller with the blades having a pitch angle of 40. As the well fluid passes through the instrument it strikes the impeller. The resulting force rotates the impeller and twist\ the torsion wires to a balance point at which the torque imparted to the wires balances the force required for the impeller to deflect the well fluid. The impeller is symmetrical and a change in direction of the flow results in a reversal of the direction in which the impeller is deflected. Thus the direction of the flow as well as its velocity is indicated. A dial is attached to the impeller by means of a hollow tube through which the upper torsion wire extends. The angular position of the impeller is recorded by photographing the dial at frequent intervals. In any given set of torsion wires the modulus of shear and polar moment of inertia remain constant and the deflection varies directly with the applied torque. The deflection imparted to the torsion wires also varies as the square of the fluid velocity. Further, the velocities represented by any two given deflections hear the following relationships: and Where V = velocity of flow stream and O ;= deflection. This is the basic relationship which is used to calculate the relative velocities represented by a given set of deflections where the velocity represented by any one of the deflection readings is a known quantity. An underground mining method for extracting an eight metre (26') coal horizon, containing a sandstone layer. A decrease in the thickness of the rock strata between the number two and number three seams of the Sasolburg Coal Field, has resulted in a total mining horizon approximately eight metres (26') thick. This parting varies in thickness and competency and in some areas is impractical to cut with a continuous miner. In addition, the general mining area is highly jointed. The top seam is first mined to a normal bord and pillar plan with a continuous miner. The bottom seam is then mined by selectively undercutting the stone parting constituting the floor of the top seam. In areas where this parting is between 0.75 - 2.50 metres (29.5" - 98") thick, it is suspended from the primary roof support installed when mining the top seam. Secondary, high extraction retreat mining is then undertaken in the coal pillars adjacent to the suspension supported headings in the bottom seam. Left in-situ, the parting provides lateral support to the pillar sidewalls in both the top and bottom seams, enabling high percentage extraction rates in what was previously thought an uneconomically mineable area. The paper proposed, presents the challenges and practical implications of executing the mining method, including the primary roof control of the top seam and the stone parting between scams.

This chapter deals with the concepts of shock waves and detonation waves together, because a detonation wave is really a shock wave, supported by the explosive reaction that the shock wave ignites and propagates as it travels through the explosive material. In the context of rock blasting, furthermore, there is justification for treating shock waves and detonation waves together, because the mechanical effect of the detonation in an explosive in a drillhole in rock is propagated and its effects are spread throughout the surrounding rock by means of a shock wave. The overall performance of an explosive in rock blasting or any other application is of course dependent on how much thermal energy is released in the chemical reaction that occurs when the material detonates, and on how much useful mechanical work the reaction products can do as they expand. A major portion of this chapter deals with the prediction and measurement of explosive performance, a subject which is now still in a process of rapid development.

Selenium, which is a 6A group element of the periodic table, constitutes about 7x10-5 % of the earth?s crust. Even though selenium is a dispersed element with respect to its commercial exploitation, it is capable of forming number of minerals and nearly forty selenium minerals have been identified, out of which the copper ores are the richest sources of selenium. Electronics industries and glass industries are the major consumers of selenium, while pharma grade selenium used as micronutrient for humans and animals. Various methods have been developed to recover selenium as a by-product from copper anode slime during copper refining. Selenium being amphoteric in nature, it is soluble in both acid and alkali. While acid roast process is widely used, considerable work has been carried out in Russia for recovering selenium through alkali route. This paper enlightens the process developed at Central Research and Development Laboratory, for recovering selenium from decopperised slime through alkali pressure leaching. The decopperised slime is pressure leached with alkali under oxidizing conditions by which almost all the selenium present is converted to alkali selenate, which is easily separable from the rest of the decopperised slime. The solution so obtained is neutralized, during which, most of the impurities are precipitated out. Then selenium is precipitated in its elemental form upon purging sulphur-di-oxide under warm acidic medium. The purity of the selenium obtained by this process is higher than that of the selenium from acid roast process. Moreover selenium can be crystallized as sodium selenate and it can be marketed. The acidic content of the effluent is recovered and it is recycled back to the process. The sodium content of the effluent is converted into high purity sodium sulphate, which is marketable. The hazardous waste containing arsenic is precipitated as its sulphide and can be disposed off as landfill.

Feldspars, the most abundant minerals of the igneous rocks, occur in numerous forms and mixtures. The feldspars of commercial significance are found in widely distributed pegmatites as large crystals usually free of iron-bearing impurities and thus suitable for hand-cobbing, and also in larger bodies where the ore contains various types of feldspar intermingled with quartz and relatively free of iron-bearing impurities, or at least readily unlocked from impurities present at relatively coarse mesh. The latter type of ore includes some pegmatites, and the "alaskite" bodies so common in the Spruce Pine district of North Carolina. On the west coast of the US and in Oklahoma there is-or has been-commercial recovery of natural feldspathic sand as a source of alumina in glass and ceramics. "Aplite" in commercial terminology is a light-colored igneous rock with a granitic composition and a fine sugary texture, often banded with readily removable iron impurities. Only one area in Virginia produces aplite for the glass industry; it is located near Montpelier in Hanover County. According to Deer et al. (1966) the word feldspar derives from the Swedish feldt or jolt (field) and "spath:" chunks of rock appearing in tilled ground overlying granite. Castle and Gillson (1960) indicate a Germanic origin, citing "spat," which is said to refer to any transparent or translucent material which is readily cleavable. The term "spar" has in the past been applied to minerals other than feldspar, such as barite, calcite, and fluorite. It is correct to call the latter "fluorspar." There is a true barium feldspar, but it is rare and of no present economic importance. What is recognized as feldspar or "spar" by present producers and consumers consists of three silicate minerals which, if pure, would have the formulas KA1Si3O8 (microcline or orthoclase), NaAlSi3O8 (albite), and CaAl2Si2O8 (anorthite). These are almost never found in pure form in nature, but occur together in great abundance in a three-component system. A considerable number of different combined ratios of these three exists, with the exception that isomorphism between potassium spar and calcium spar is very limited. User specifications for feldspar products are largely built around the prevalent naturally occurring ratios. Passages following will refer to "K-spar," "Naspar," or "Ca-spar." Nomenclature and Descriptive Terms Relating to both the mineralogy and the economics of feldspar are certain terms whose coverage it is useful to specify. Commercially, aplite is a feldspathic rock mined and beneficiated in one location in Virginia, in which both titanium and feldspar minerals are present-the latter now being the major, if not the only, economic product. Technically, the term aplite when applied to this rock is of questionable accuracy. But, in light of accepted commercial usage, the term will be here used to designate it. Regarding the Virginia rock, Ross (1941) is cited. Alaskite is another term requiring understanding if not precise use. A distinctive rock type customarily called by this name is found near Spruce Pine, Mitchell County, North Carolina. THE relationships between collector and mineral, activator and mineral, and activator, collector and mineral will be considered herein. We propose to criticize current theories of flotation but we will not repeat the many pertinent arguments presented by Wark and Cox28 in 1937 in which the "chemical" or more strictly the "solubility" theory proposed by Taggart and co-workers22 is shown to be untenable. Recently Taggart, Arbiter and Kellogg24 have studied the long-chain aliphatic amines as collectors and have attempted to resuscitate the solubility theory for these particular collectors. Dean and Ambrose3 have felt that "we stumble over words" when we distinguish different mechanisms of adsorption. Our view is that nothing is more stultifying to the development of a science than attempts to force widely different phenomena into one classification. This oversimplification leads immediately to difficulties in the interpretation of results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The response of minerals to activator and collector was determined by "captive-bubble" tests. The methods of preparation of specimens26 and of testing18 have been previously described. Results from captive-bubble tests were confirmed by flotation tests in glass-stoppered cylinders.25 The full lines shown in the figures relating solution composition to contact (flotation) distinguish solutions in which contact (flotation) is possible from those in which it is not. The curve is derived by successive approximation and the accuracy is ±0.2 pH units and ± 5 mg. per liter of collector or depressant. Solution compositions for which it was shown experimentally that contact or flotation is possible are marked by a circle, those for which it is not possible by a cross and those for which it is doubtful by a cross within a circle. It is assumed that at all other solution compositions within (without) the curve, contact or flotation is possible (not possible). After testing in the collector solution, the mineral was removed, washed, and tested by the captive-bubble method in water, or floated in a cylinder with frother only. In this way the composition of solutions in which a mineral was conditioned but in which properties of the collector solution prevented contact or flotation can be defined. The composition of solutions in which conditioning was possible lie between the full and broken curve, the experimental results being indicated on the figures by a square. The curves show the limits of composition of solution in which flotation in a cell would be possible. Many factors other than those considered in these tests determine recovery or grade of a given mineral in practice.
