I. GEOLOGY AND ORE OCCURRENCE IN central Colorado is a great belt of intrusive porphyry nearly 100 miles long (160 km.), extending from the Clear Creek district on the north to Aspen on the south, which includes many of the well known mining camps of the State. Near the southern end of this belt, at Leadville, the occurrence of these intrusives is most marked, resulting in intensive mineralization and the formation of a great variety of large orebodies. During the past 40 years, Leadville has been a steady producer of gold, silver, lead, zinc, manganese, iron, and bismuth, in the forms of sulfid, carbonate and oxide ores. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss pyrite alone, which, under present economic conditions, is valuable chiefly for its sulphur contents. The ore-bearing formation of the Leadville district consists of two beds of limestone separated by a layer of quartzite. The upper limestone is carbonaceous, and is known locally as the blue limestone. It varies in thickness from 50 to 300 ft. (15 to 91 m.). The lower limestone is Silurian, known locally as white limestone, and is about the same thickness as the upper bed. Underneath the Silurian limestone is a layer of Cambrian quartzite front 100 to 250 ft. (30 to 76 in.) thick resting on Archean granite, which forms the limit of ore deposition. As a rule, there is a sheet of white porphyry above the upper, or blue limestone; a sheet of gray porphyry is associated with the blue limestone, either in or below it, but the porphyries are not so regular as the quartzites and limestones and are not always found in their expected positions. Throughout the district there is an elaborate system of faults and intrusive porphyry dikes, which have all important bearing on ore deposits. The writer has seen two or three orebodies which were not closely associated with either a fault or a porphyry dike, but if the minor fractures and water courses are considered as part of the fault system it is safe to say that all orebodies are directly traceable to one or both of these causes.

The design of an auxiliary ventilation system for long underground openings (drifts, ramps and shafts), often requires the installation of multiple fans. The fans are installed in series and separated from each other by rigid ducts of fixed or variable length. However, problems relating to excessive leakage often occur, with each project representing a unique problem requiring an efficient solution. In this study, a method to determine the design parameters of an auxiliary ventilation system is presented. The method is based on the principle of partitioning a long ductwork into segments of finite length and solving the resulting networks separately. Specifically, the method is developed to solve two types of problems: constant fan spacing, and constant fan size. In the former, the fan spacing is fixed, and the problem is solved for fan sizes. In the latter, the problem is to solve for fan spacing. An example is used to illustrate the method.

Six hundred miles inland from Australia's east coast Port of Townsville in Queensland's sea of rock and spinifex lies Mount Isa. This paper presents theory which is used to predict rock-bit bearing life reduction due to simple harmonic variations in bit forces. The theory is based on the premise that if a constant load acts for a certain fraction of the life which the bearing would have if that constant load were applied for its entire life, then the same fraction of thelife of the bearing is consumed. Total bearing life is related to simple harmonic variations in bearing life associated with instantaneous bearing loads. The results show that rock bit bearing life is not affected appreciably by forces commonly impressed upon a bit, but it is affecied appreciably by relatively large dynamic bit forces occasionally encountered during drilling. In addition, the results show that the life of sealed bearings is more sensitive to bit force variations than is the life of unsealed bearings. INTRODUCTION Roller bearings are important components in roller cone rock bits because they transmit a large portion of the drill collar weight to the formation being drilled. Unfortunately, they have a relatively short life under down-hole drilling conditions. Roller bearings are usually the first bit components to fail, and their failure leads immediately to failure of the entire bit. Short roller bearing life, and thus short bit life, is due mainly to high unit loads transmitted by the bit and to the adverse environment in which the bearings operate. The results of the study discussed in this report show how dynamic bit forces also affect roller bearing life. The purpose of this paper is to discuss theory developed to predict the effect of different magnitudes of periodic bit forces on roller bearing life. Theoretical results are used to compare the life of rock bit roller bearings subjected to steady forces to the life of rock bit roller bearings subjected to unsteady forces similar to the type of unsteady forces measured at the bit with a special downhole recording instrument. BACKGROUND AIanufacturers of bearings have conducted laboratory tests which show how bearing life is affected by steady bearing load. 1 The well-known empirical equation which defines bearing life follows from bearing test data. It is: where L = bearing life, hr P = bearing load, Ib C = constant q = exponent (constant). The effect of environment on bearing performance is manifested through the exponent q and the constant, C. King,2 in similar tests conducted on roller bearings used in rock bits, showed that, in addition to the load, the environment (abrasive materials, chemical components, etc.) greatly affects bearing life. His data, which show how the life of roller bearings in a 7-7/8-in. W7R bit rotating at 60 rpm is affected by bit weight and fluid environment, are displayed on a log-log plot by broken lines made up of straight line segments. Each broken line corresponds to a given environment. One segment (q = 1.4) of the broken line corresponding to a fluid environment of barite mud is shown in Fig. 1 along

Iron (III) can easily and selectively be removed from acidic sulphate solutions with organo-phosphoric acids like Di-2-Ethyl-Hexyl-Phosphoric Acid [D2EHPA]. Stripping of the iron (III) loaded organic, however, is difficult unless highly concentrated inorganic acid solutions are used. In this paper results are shown for the enhanced stripping of iron from loaded D2EHPA by electro-reduction. The loaded solvent is contacted with a 2 M H2SO4 solution, which is continuously recycled in an electrochemical reactor where iron (III) is reduced to iron(II). As iron (II) is not extracted by D2EHPA, the equilibrium for iron (III)- D2EHPA is shifted towards the aqueous iron (Il)-sulphuric acid solution. The electro-reduction unit is a vessel with separated catholyte and anolyte chambers. The catholyte is the actual stripping solution where iron (III) is reduced to iron (II) on a stainless steel electrode. The anolyte is a 2 M H2SO4 solution where oxygen is evolved on a lead alloy electrode. A sintered glass plug separates the compartments. With this unit, enhanced stripping of iron from the solvent is possible under mild acid conditions [2 M H2SO4], and a concentrated ferrous sulphate solution can be obtained. The results shown have mainly been obtained by studying the parameters affecting the electro-reductive stripping of a D2EHPA loaded organic phase in a batch reactor. From an iron (IH)-saturated 20 vol. % D2EHPA solvent containing ~ 12.5 g/1 Fe (III) over 90% of the iron can be stripped in one stage with a 2 M H2SO4 solution at 50°C. It is shown that in this way it should be possible to obtain a concentrated ferrous sulphate solution which can be processed downstream to recover a pure iron product.

IN planning retreatment of tailings, the material to be retreated should be thoroughly investigated, tak- ing into consideration the total tonnage, the blende content, the specific gravity of the different particles, and the grinding necessary to liberate the mineral. The tailing pile is surveyed by making a closed trav-erse around the outer edges, locating the stations at points from which a considerable portion of the pile is visible. From each of these points the pile is sur-veyed by stadia and a contour map made. The yardage is then calculated from the contour interval and the area inclosed by the contours obtained with a planim-eter. A party of three men can survey an average tailing pile in one and one-half, days. In calculating tonnage it is assumed that 22 cu. ft. of tailing in place equal one ton. Sampling is done by the use of an auger with casing to prevent the hole from caving. These holes may be bored 12 to 15 ft. deep by hand, but to penetrate the entire pile some kind of power is applied to drive the casing and raise or lower the auger. The latter method is more expensive but the increased cost is more than compensated for by the value of the information obtained.

AMIDST the tumult and the shouting of the times, there are perceptible certain tendencies, quiet though serious, to take stock of the situation with a view to putting our house in order, and of these none is more encouraging than the awakening, interest in the higher education, and especially in technical education. Various committees of the professional organizations have cast much light on the matter and have pointed the way to progress and reform, but their scope is necessarily restricted by the requirements of precision and any excursion beyond these bounds must be undertaken by the unfettered individual who is free to rush in where responsible committees fear to tread. A discussion of the bearing of the higher education on character scarcely lends itself to objective treatment and yet, fraught as it is with imponderables and abstractions, the theme cannot be escaped in any com-prehensive scheme of education. The question is being pressed with growing insist-ence, why these United States, relatively to Europe, are deficient in intellectual output, and the ready reply, "Because America is a new country and Americans are too intent on developing their natural resources," is too facile and too false to carry conviction.

Nothing is more important to life-plant and animal-than phosphate. Its compounds are essential to the energy functions of all living systems and for the formation of bones and teeth. Animals get their phosphate from eating plants and other animals, or domestically from feed supplements. Plants get their phosphates from the soil. Man's most important use of phosphate is for fertilizer; approximately 95% of the world's phosphate rock production is consumed by fertilizers. Most of the balance is processed in electric furnaces into elemental phosphorus, the important raw material for making industrial phosphates. Recovery of uranium from phosphates has been possible but not widely used. However, recent significant developments have generated interest in such recovery in the US and elsewhere. Phosphate occurs in all igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in all fresh and salt water. However, economical recovery is limited to deposits where natural concentration of the phosphate mineral has occurred. Occasionally natural concentration is great enough that the material can be used as mined; generally, however, the ore is low grade_ and must be concentrated. Phosphate rock is produced in 31 countries. Fig. 1 shows the location of major phosphate rock producers as well as some of the known phosphate deposits not yet in production. In the last decade the world phosphate industry has experienced steady growth. World production rose from 98 Mt of phosphate rock in 1973 to 140 Mt in 1982. Fig. 2 shows the growth curve of rock production and graphically illustrates the almost straight-line rise since 1945 in both US and world production. Table 1 gives the breakdown, by countries, of world rock production, 1974 through 1979. Table 2 shows US rock production by producing areas. Definitions of Terms Used in the Phosphate Industry Phosphate Rock: Commonly called rock in sedimentary deposits and apatite in igneous deposits. Those expressions generally include any mined, or mined and beneficiated, fluorine-containing calcium phosphate used as the raw material for the next stage of manufacturing. The average phosphate content in rocks is 0.1 to 0.2% P2O5, as documented by McKelvey (1973). About 200 minerals contain more than 1 % P2O5. However, the important mineral in igneous rocks is fluorapatite, [Ca5 (PO4),3 F], containing about 42% P205 and 3.8% F2; in sedimentary rocks the important mineral is francolite, a carbonate fluorapatite containing up to 2% molecular CO2. Both are in the apatite family of minerals. Most phosphate rock, whether beneficiated or not, is a fine-grained material. The expression phosphate rock has no relation to its phosphate content. For example, phosphate rock from Idaho used in the production of phosphorus may contain about 24% P205, whereas rock from Morocco may contain 36.6% P2O5. Phosphorite: A deposit of phosphate directly or indirectly of sedimentary origin, which is of economic interest. Turquoise Ridge is an underground gold mine located in the Potosi Mining District, approximately 64 km northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. Turquoise Ridge Underground is accessed via two shafts and a system of internal ramps and utilizes underhand drift and fill mining methods with cemented rockfill. The mine also employs mechanical mining as well as sill benching as mining methods. Ground conditions at Turquoise Ridge Underground are poor, and the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) may be less than 20, or very poor, in ore headings. Current production rate is 2,700 tonnes of ore per day. Key challenges in increasing production levels and reducing costs are the development of sufficient stoping areas and the transition from top-cut development to undercut stoping. Completion of the infrastructure development in the North Zone is necessary to achieve and optimize higher production levels. The #3 Shaft project is well underway and is expected to be commissioned in mid. 2022. The shaft will drastically decrease the haulage requirements in the North Zone

Based on the rules of strata behavior and the characteristics of rock movement, the elementary problems of using fully mechanized coal mining techniques in steeply dipping coal seams are described. A model of the "surrounding-support-rock" relationship is made. The support systems stability during fully mechanized mining of steeply dipping coal seams is studied. Then, a practical engineering example of the fully mechanized mining of a steeply dipping seam is presented. The seam used in the example is in the Lushuidong colliery, which is administrated by Huaying Mining Bureau, Sichuan Province.

All crude oils become more viscous when chilled, but the only oils that congeal and precipitate paraffin to such an extent as actually to cause production troubles are those that contain an appreciable amount of wax. In handling these oils of high wax content, three distinct problems may be encountered before the oil reaches the refinery. The first problem is the precipitation and accumulation of paraffin in the well, either in the oil string or on the face and in the pores of the sand. The second problem is the accumulation of paraffin and the congealing of oil in the transportation lines. The third problem is the precipitation of paraffin and the formation of tank bottoms. Factors That Control the Solubility of Paraffin in Crude Oil Two main factors, possibly three, govern the solubility of wax in crude oil. The first of these is temperature. The solubility of wax in crude oil increases with an increase in temperature, and as the temperature approaches the melting point, the wax becomes soluble in all proportions in the crude oil. The higher the melting point of a wax, the less soluble it is in crude oil below its melting point. All crude oils containing wax can be chilled to a point where the oil is saturated with wax. If the temperature is decreased below this point, some of the wax will crystallize from solution. Fig. 1 shows the effect of temperature on the solubility of crude paraffin in oil. The second factor is the amount of volatile constituents and gas removed from the crude oil. Evaporation of the volatile constituents and gas lessens the volume of the oil and concentrates the solution of wax in the oil; therefore less wax can be held in solution at a definite temperature. As the natural amount of wax present in the oil is constant, this results in the oil becoming saturated with wax at a higher temperature than if the volatile constituents and gas were still in the oil. As an example of this, a fresh sample of crude oil having a gravity of 39.8

Due to the influence of economic development on the demand growth of coal resources, many mines in China have gradually entered deep mining. When the roof of deep coal seam is hard rock, it is easy to cause strong ground pressure with the advance of the working face, which seriously threatens the safety of coal mining. Taking 31,104 working face of a mine as the engineering background, this paper studies and compares the deformation characteristics and stress transfer evolution law before and after the presplitting of the hard roof through the combination of physical similarity simulation, numerical calculation, and field measurement, based on the analysis of the interaction relationship between the breaking and collapse of the composite hard roof, and verifies the treatment effect of hydraulic presplitting through field measurement. The results show that: (1) In the early stage of mining under the composite hard roof, the lower roof is mainly subjected to tensile failure, the voussoir beam structure formed is relatively unstable, and the stope is prone to impact. When the mining distance of the working face is large, the breaking rotation of the upper hard roof voussoir beam causes pressure damage to the lower hard roof, causing the lower hard roof voussoir beam structure to slide and lose stability, resulting in strong ground pressure in the working face. (2) After presplitting of composite hard rock stratum, in the early stage of mining, the range and degree of rock stratum damaged by presplitting are small except for the hard rock stratum itself, and the presplitting effect is not significant. When mining to the first square position, the roof is damaged in advance by presplitting, the overall plastic damage range increases, the damage form area increases, and the damage degree deepens. The vertical displacement of the composite hard roof increases rapidly, and the presplitting effect is remarkable. (3) The evolution characteristics of roof principal stress transfer show that under the dual effects of mining and presplitting, the roof tensile stress area above the goaf is large, the rock failure horizon rises, and the roof failure height is high and the failure degree is deep. The stress concentration degree of the coal mass in front of the goaf is reduced, and the stress concentration range is transferred to the rock mass in front. With the advance of mining, the hard roof in front can break and caving in time, so as to avoid rock burst disaster caused by large suspended roof area. The field ground pressure monitoring shows that the average periodic weighting interval, weighting range, peak value before weighting, and peak value during weighting of the working face after presplitting decrease by 53.5%, 38.03%, 8.63%, and 5.96%, respectively, which effectively reduces the weighting intensity and ensures the safe and efficient mining of the working face.

The nature of industry structure is examined and the structure of the aluminum, copper, lead and zinc industries are described by the use of factor analysis. Capacity is defined and the relationship between industry structure and capacity utilization is examined. It is demonstrated that excess capacity is possible in industries with competitive or monopolistic characteristics, but the effects of the overcapacity are vastly different in the two cases. In a competitive industry, cycles of overcapacity with attendant fluctuating prices are expected. A change in industry structure from monopolistic to competitive characteristics over time causes profits and economic rents to be transferred from the producer to consumers of the mineral.

INTRODUCTION Optimization, as measured by productivity gains, is being achieved in our nation's preparation plants principally by automation, economy of scale, and reducing maintenance. Increased tonnage per unit of investment, a1 so a measure of optimization, is being achieved by breaking with tradition and increasing plant utilization, while simultaneously improving on equipment re1iabi1ity. Improved qua1ity, another measure of optimization, is being attained through technical innovation. This review will concentrate on state-of-the- art unit operations and processes, and will not discuss emerging new technologies which are covered in detail in other presentations of this symposium. It is recognized that much of what will be discussed in this paper is not unique to the fine coal circuit, but is equally applicable to the entire preparation plant. However, the areas reviewed are the principal means being used today to optimize an existing preparation plant's fine coal circuit. Prior to designing and optimizing a fine coal cleaning circuit, the question that must first be answered is, "Do we even want a fine coal circuit? This is a much more complex question than is readily apparent, as most of you recognize. It can be argued either way. In the final analysis the "bottom line" will hold (Blackmore, 1982). If your sales contract a1 lows it, and the selling price can justify it, you most assuredly want to build a fine coal circuit into your preparation plant. In general today, most new preparation plants do have fine coal cleaning circuits. The purpose of fine coal cleaning has changed with time. Some of the early applications of fine coal cleaning were to prevent stream pollution rather than to prepare a product for market (Merrill a Pennington, 1962). During the 50's, 60's and into the 70's the principal thrust of fine coal cleaning was in metallurgical coal preparation. More recently, the emphasis of the 80's is on steam coal processing. There is no consensus on what is fine coal. Traditionally, fine coal would be anything below 1/4" in size. Because of the advances being made in intermediate coal cleaning processes, i.e. heavy media cyclones and jig cleaning, this discussion will define fine coal as -28 mesh (Aplan, 1987). Figure 1 is a plot of the size ranges of a large number of U.S. bituminous coals. In general the -28 mesh fraction of a bituminous coal will be between 7% and 18% of the ROM feed with reported ranges of 5% to 40% (Aplan, 1987). Consequently, traditional fine coal cleaning is general 1 y involved with a re1 actively mi nor portion of the coal feed. Every effort is taken both in terms of mining and preparation to keep it that way because of the high cost of cleaning fines. The move away from this posture, namely, the techniques to fine grind coal to liberate pyrite is probably the biggest challenge facing fine coal processing today.

AS a matter of the most widespread interest to lead-refining metallurgists, the process of desilverizing lead originated by Parkes is the most fundamental step in lead refining. While this basic operation, in addition to effecting a practically complete recovery of gold and silver, is also a great purifying operation and a governor on the purity and uniformity of the final refined lead, it has the important deficiency that no bismuth is removed in the operation. The problem of finding a satisfactory, inexpensive method for removal of bismuth that would fit in with the basic desilverization step has been one of enticing interest for lead-refinery metallurgists for many years. Of late it has become one of imperative interest, and while many attempts and much progress have been made, it is probably fair to say that metallurgical progress thus far is only catching up with commercial requirements. The Pattinson process, an original competitor of the Parkes process for desilverization, has received much attention for its possibilities for bismuth removal. Bismuth concentrations in the Pattinson process fall far short of the silver concentrations and as a result too many operations are required and a crawl in grade in the kettle units is experienced which requires periodic correction. Altogether, it has proved too expensive a remedy, from the cost standpoint of both installation and operation. The Betts electrolytic process is a fully satisfactory remedy but its present status in the field of lead refining is more a matter of bismuth removal than preference as a refining system, except, of course, in instances particularly favorable to the basic requirements of the process. The Betts process, of course, is essentially different from the Parkes process, and very difficult to associate therewith to any economy except in minor ways. Accordingly, where economy dictates the Parkes process, and this is true of far the greater portion of the world's tonnage, the adoption of the Betts process primarily for bismuth removal is apt to prove an expensive remedy on account of its normally higher cost of operation, inelasticity of the equipment for variable tonnages, and high per ton cost of installation.

Sub-Level stoping was used in this country at least as early as 1912, at the Magpie mine in Michipicoten. The fundamental principles of the system are the same wherever it is used, but modifications have been adopted in the Michigan iron mines and in several Canadian mines. It is a system whereby a suitable body of ore may be developed quickly and worked cheaply, with a low initial expense, and by miners of quite ordinary ability. The basic method, described in the following pages, may be modified to meet conditions where one or more factors are not in accord with normal sub-level stoping requirements. In suitable ground, sub-level stoping is probably the most satisfactory method yet devised for underground hard-rock mining. It is so simple, straightforward, and safe that no special training of a crew is necessary. Any miner capable of drifting and raising can carry on the work necessary for sub-level stoping after the shaft has been sunk. The method is suitable, however, only for reasonably wide ore-bodies, the minimum width of ore to which it can be economically applied being somewhere in the neighbour-hood of thirty feet. The development programme is simple. Assuming, for purposes of illuslustration, an ideal ore-body, two thousand feet long, dipping nearly vertical, and varying in width from forty to a hundred feet, this programme would be as follows. The shaft should be sunk on the footwall side about sixty feet outside of the ore-body and near its centre. Levels are then established at suitable intervals, usually 125 feet. On each level, a cross-cut is run to the ore-body, and there a main-haulage drift is driven in either direction to the end of the ore. Cross-cuts are then run at 25-foot intervals, so that ore-chutes can be spaced about 25 feet centre to centre each way. It is not necessary that these cross-cuts be extended to the walls of the ore-body, if the position of the walls is known; they are extended just far enough to make room for the correct location of the chutes.

Electrowinning is the prevalent technique for recovering silver from wastes generated in silver-tungsten electrical contact fabrication. Such scrap is placed in a permeable plastic basket, which constitutes the anode compartment, and is suspended in a larger cell where the cathode is mounted. A silver nitrate solution is used as the electrolyte and, upon application of an electric field, the silver migrates to the cathode where it deposits. At times, there is tungsten migration to the cathode compartment and consequent co-deposition with the silver. This W contamination, which may amount to several thousand mg/L (oz per gal), necessitates additional purification of the deposited Ag and its removal would, therefore, be advantageous. Eliminating the W impurity also extends the operating period of the cell with corresponding increases in the Ag output and savings in labor costs. The solution to this problem lies in the selective removal of the W from the AgNO3 electrolyte either by liquid-liquid or liquid-solid extraction. Although W extraction in the liquid-liquid mode with a quaternary amine or other reagents as extractants appears feasible, particularly in view of the low pH (about 1.5) of the system, this approach was not considered because it is essentially a batch-type process. It is a more elaborate industrial operation than extraction by ion exchange resins. Implementing the latter process consists of passing the electrolyte from the electrowinning cell through an ion exchange column which would extract the tungsten selectively and returning the tungsten-free stream to the cathode compartment. This process continues until the W extraction efficiency decreases (as a result of resin loading) below an acceptable value. The electrolyte is then directed through another, similar column while the W values are eluted off the first one and the resin is regenerated for another cycle. Thus, two columns in a parallel flow pattern provide the means for continuous processing of the electrolyte feedstock.

A general relalionship between the amount of glide shear (due to slip) and the macroscopic shape change has been developed. Since the deformation can be large, finite strain analysis is employed. In this treatnzent, the shape change is expressed by a deformation gradient matrix, F - [axi/aXj1, where X and x refer to the initial and final positions of a particle. This matrix is readily evaluated in terms of the amounl of glide shear, a , and the direction cosines of the slip-plane normal and the slip direction for a single active slip system. In the case of deformation from slip on several systems, the product F(a) of the several deformation gradient matrices is first calculated. Then, by assuming that the final configuration is reached by a long series of small shears of magnitude a, occurring more or less alternately in the several slip sys- IN problems of crystal plasticity, it is often necessary to relate the amount of glide in the operating slip systems to the macroscopic strain components. This relationship is relatively simple when only small strains are considered. In this case the separate strain contributions from several slip systems are additive. Such a procedure is incorrect in the case of large plastic deformation. To the authors' knowledge, no general treatment of the latter problem has appeared in the literature. In specific instances, Mark, Polanyi, and schmid3 have derived the relationship between glide and axial elongation during tensile pulling of a single crystal when only one slip system is active. A similar relationship for duplex slip was worked out by v. Goler and Sachs.4 Taylor and Elam5 have also studied in detail problems of large plastic deformation. Due to uncertainties as to the slip systems at the time, terns, the final deformation gradient matrix can be obtained. Mathematically, the problem is reduced to finding the limit of F(dN as N — m while a — 0 in such a way that the Product Na = 0, a ftnite conslant designatzng the accunzulated amount of shear. It turns out that this limit is simply , where F, is the matrix whose elements are the coefficients of a in the F(a) matix. Application is made of the present treatment to a fcc crystal of Perlrzalloy compressed on the (110) plane and contrained to elongate zn the [112] directzon. In addition, it is shown that one rnay readily obtain from the general analyszs the well-known formulas relating elongation, amount of glide shear, and amount of lattice rotation for crystals deforming by single and double slip under tension. however, they were mainly concerned with proving that slip occurs on {111}(110) systems in fcc metals. The present general treatment arose out of recent investigations of magnetic anisotropy in cold-worked Fe-Ni alloys6 as well as some related problems in strength anisotropy of single crystals.' Detailed application of the general analysis will be provided in the case of a Permalloy single crystal compressed on the (110) plane and constrained to elongate only in the [112] direction. It will be seen that, as expected, the small strain approximation leads to significant errors after moderate straining. It will also be shown that the present general treatment yields the formulas of Mark et al. and of v. Goler and Sachs in those specific cases. The report describes scaled model experiments on the recovery of oil from porous sands by the injection of miscible liquids [solvents] and the subsequent recovery of the solvents by water flooding. Special attention has been paid to the scaling problem. Scaling rules are deduced and their correctness is checked by carrying out experiments in tubes of various sizes. Data are submitted on the effect of the viscosity ratio oil-solvent on the efficiency of the displacement process, the viscosity ratio varying from 1.5 to 5,000. Breakthrough recoveries obtained when flooding with kerosene as a solvent, are equal to those obtained in water flooding at the same viscosity ratio, indicating that he phenomenon of viscous fingering is decisive. After breakthrough, however, flooding with a miscible liquid becomes much more efficient than a water flood and this is more pronounced as the viscosity ratio oil-solvent is higher. Although high oil recoveries are obtained and most of the solvent in the sand can be recovered by a subsequent waterdrive, a straight flood with miscible liquids does not appear economically attractive because of the large quantities of solvent required. Therefore, a circulation process is introduced, the features of which are described in this paper. Though by means of this circulation process the amount of solvent required can be drastically reduced, the process is not yet economic. SCOPE OF THE INVESTIGATION The recovery efficiency by water flood of oils of viscosities exceeding 50 cp is low. As interest in production of these highly viscous oils is growing at the moment, it was considered worthwhile to gain basic information on the feasibility of first flooding such oils with a low viscous miscible liquid [solvent] and subsequently producing the latter in a conventional way, e.g. by water flooding. The method has the obvious drawbacks that return on the investment is delayed until water flooding has begun and that it requires the investment of a more valuable product to produce a less valuable one. On the other hand, it may be expected that the displacement of one liquid by another is more efficient when the two liquids are miscible than when they are immiscible. As laboratory data on this point are scanty, the present investigation seemed justified. Another argument for carrying out these experiments is that they present a valuable contribution to our concepts of the scaling problem in reservoir engineering studies. Some major difficulties which are encountered in the scaling of the waterflooding process such as the scaling of the capillary forces and the difficulty of obtaining the same permeability characteristics in the model do not present themselves in this case. As the fluids are miscible capillary forces do not play a role and as there is only one fluid phase, Darcy's law is valid in its original form. Consequently it is felt that the scaling rules can be deduced with a greater amount of certainty. THE principal use of barium sulphate is as an inert paint pigment.. For this purpose, the ground material is used both in its natural and in its artificial forms. Probably the largest amount is used in the production of a chemically precipitated pigment called lithopone which consists of 70 parts of barium sulphate and 30 parts of zinc sulphide. An enormous tonnage-of this pigment is at the present time being used in the manufacture of interior flat wall paints of the oil type, such paints having almost entirely supplanted the use of corroded white lead which was at one time used for interior painting. The more dense nature, lower price and sanitary value of lithopone was responsible for this change. Lithopone is, moreover, used to a large extent in the manufacture of oil cloth, shade cloth and linoleum. Its whiteness makes it of particular value for this purpose. Barium sulphate is also used of itself in admixture with other pigments in the manufacture of prepared paints. The chemically precipitated form of barium sulphate, which is generally called blanc fixe, is also used for this purpose. Much controversy has raged in the paint world over the question of inert pigments such as barytes, silica, asbestine and china clay. These pigments are probably called inert because they have no chemical action upon the linseed oil in which they are ground to produce paints, and on account of the fact that they become transparent in oil. It is well known that in the manufacture of paints, opaque white pigments, such as basic carbonate white lead, basic sulphate white lead, zinc oxide etc., are generally used as the grinding base. These base pigments, when ground in oil, react therewith to some slight extent, and they produce white paints which have excellent biding or obscuring value. The inert pigments so-called, when ground in oil and spread out into a thin film, form transparent coatings which have no hiding power. It has been contended, therefore, that the use of barytes or similar inert pigments in paints is resorted to simply for the purpose of cheapening the cost of the product.
