THE proper classification of mining methods has received the earnest study of many mining engineers and has resulted in much technical con-troversy, depending no doubt upon the point from which classification is viewed or the use to which it is put. So far as the writer is aware, the discussion has invariably centered around the classification of under-ground mining methods, and only superficial attention has been directed to surface methods. Volume 72, page 10, of the Institute TRANSACTIONS, presents such a classification, sponsored by the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute. A similar classification by Prof. Hugh P. Nicholson appeared in MINING AND METALLURGY in October, 1934. The two classifications are quite different in their treatment of underground methods but are identical in classifying surface methods, although Professor Nicholson does suggest possible further divisions for surface mining and admits that such subdivision is more difficult than appears at first. In this paper the enviroment in which Tong Kuang Yu mine, China is developed is described. Geological and geomechanical environments which pose difficulties in the design and optimization of Block Caving are discussed. According to mine conditions, caving process simulation was carried out using Displacement Discontinuty Method and relationships between stress distribution .and undercut parameters were established in accordance with different undercut sequence. Based on simulation the influences of caving parameters on caving probability, drift instability and ore-draw control were analysed in order to optimize Block Caving Mining. On the basis of simulation and mathematical programming, the optimal sequence is proposed essential to satisfy the safety, production and other restrictions.

Kind of the model depends on mineral composition of an ore and reagent regime applied. Discussion of the paper of DR. L. EDELEANU, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2313 to 2332. F. W. BUSHONG,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-This process of extraction is particularly advantageous in the case of Roumanian oil, on account of its high aromatic content. I have prepared a paper, which will appear probably next month in the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, describing a series of two-degree fractions of oil from the Nowata field in Oklahoma. I have made extractions with liquid sulphur dioxide in accordance with Dr. Edeleanu's method, and found that the Oklahoma oils, for instance the kerosene fractions, are purified in this way, although the quantity taken out does not at all compare with that taken out of the Roumanian oil. I have made careful analyses of separate fractions, before and after extraction, and they show a very distinct fractional separation-. I like the distinction, brought out by Dr. Day in previous discussions, in regard to oils, rather than oil, and his beautiful illustration of fractionation. Just as fuller's earth, and other clays, will enable us to obtain lower-boiling fractional portions of the oils, and eventually retain a residuum which is hard to get rid of, or to remove, so there is an advantage to be gained by the use of a reagent which begins at the other end by taking out these last constituents first, namely, ozone. I have also analyzed the ozonides and they are derivatives of hydrocarbons very much poorer. in hydrogen than we have heretofore supposed. Similar results have been obtained with Roumanian, Russian, and Italian petroleums. Furthermore, I have prepared ozonides from a fraction of Oklahoma oils, both before and after ex-' traction with liquid sulphur dioxide, and found that the ozonide obtained from the extract is the same as that precipitated out of the original oils. In other words, the residual substance, which the fuller's earth retains, is the one first thrown down by the use of ozone, but it may also be extracted by liquid sulphur dioxide- and be thus separated in apparently unaltered condition. The analysis of this extract corresponds to the formula C15H20, which is surprising, since it is lower in hydrogen content than we have been in the habit of considering among the constituents of our oils. The extract was probably contaminated with other hydro-carbons, but I think it is unquestionable that we must look for hydro-carbons in petroleum which correspond to a formula at least -as low in hydrogen as C15H2o, and possibly even as low as C15H16.

Statistical screening is so named because a particulate feed is separated into "size" intervals on the basis of the probabalistic behavior of the individual particles (i.e., their probability of passing the screen) rather than by physical restraint. To illustrate this statement, consider a conventional screening operation. A particle which is larger than the openings in the screen cloth is physically restrained from passing through and is repeatedly reflected from the surface until it is discharged as oversize. Of those particles smaller than the screen openings, the very smallest tend to pass the screen near the feed end while those nearer in size to the screen opening tend to pass at a greater distance from the feed end. Alternatively, we could say that the particles with high probability of passing through the screen are concentrated near the feed end while particles of low probability of passing are dispersed from the feed end. This tendency to segregate is the basis for size separation by statistical screening. The purpose of this note is to: 1) Show that the distribution of material passing an array of screens can be described by a modified binomial distribution. 2) Demonstrate that an efficient size separation can be made by this technique. 3) Relate some of the more important screening parameters to the efficiency of the size separation. The Distribution Function The distribution of undersize products along the length of a screen can be derived with the help of a few simple definitions and assumptions. 1) First, we must assume that each particle has some probability of passing a screen on a single presentation. Further, we must assume that this probability is constant and is not affected by the position of the particle on the screen. It must also be acknowledged that several factors enter into this probability. Among them are the "action" of the screen, the slope of the deck, the shape of the openings, etc. The relationship between these factors, however. is not the subject of this paper. 2) To simplify calculations, all particles falling within a size range on the Tyler scale, e.g., —x + x/ mm, are assumed to have the same probability. 3) It is assumed that particles which do not pass the screen on a presentation are reflected a unit distance forward, i.e., the direction of material travel. A unit distance is defined as the distance between the centers of consecutive wires in the screen cloth.

Mine pit slopes in the Pacific Rim are a geotechnical challenge because of the complex geology in which they are developed. Mines are currently being fast-tracked to meet the increase in commodity prices, often resulting in some reduction in ground studies and short-cutting of design procedures. In addition, the resources boom means that skilled personnel are in relatively short supply. At a time when mine pits are getting bigger and deeper, and the engineering is getting more demanding, there is an increased demand on managers to effectively implement the work.   Experience both in New Zealand and the Philippines, display the complex range of geological environments in which pits are being excavated. Working in these conditions has shown that successful geotechnical design requires a strong geotechnical model based on sound geology. An appropriate level of investigation and analyses results in a certain level of understanding for the mine design. There is a point where additional expenditure (on investigation and analyses) is not warranted based on the expected minimal impact on decreasing the level of perceived risk on the project. For most projects in our experience the analytical methods and complexity of geotechnical assessment changes increases as the level of knowledge grows.

Kennecott's Ray mine is located about 145 km (90 miles) north of Tucson in the Mineral Creek mining district of central Arizona. Mining in the district started in the late 1800's. The Ray mine itself was first mined by under- ground methods in 1911 and was changed to an open-pit operation in 1952. Mineralization is complex and includes sulfide, silicate, and native copper mineralization, as well as minor amounts of molybdenite. Sulfide ore, mined at Ray, is shipped by rail to Kennecott's concentrator and smelter at Hayden, 32 km (20 miies) away. Silicate ore, mostly chrysocolla, is processed near the mine in a vat leaching-electro- winning plant. The mine consists of two sulfide areas: (1) the West pit and the Central pit (the original Pearl Handle pit) and (2) a silicate area on the northeast perimeter of the Central pit. The pit now is over 304 m (1000 ft) deep and approximately 3048 m (10,000 ft) long. Roads within the ultimate pit are limited to a grade of 10%, while those outside the pit are limited to 8%. The mining equipment consists of 40 Wabco 1094 (120-st) haulage trucks [ranging from 109 to 227 t (120 to 250 st)], 12 electric shovels [ranging from 6 to 23 m (7 to 25 yd)], and 3 11-m (12-yd) Dart production loaders.

How do you initiate closure planning for a mine site that is on the doorstep of a major community without generating the extremes of panic or complacency? That is the question that is faced by Australia's largest gold mine, the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Super Pit in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM's Community Relations Manager, Danielle van Kampen, will reveal the lengthy closure planning process that is in train to alert yet not alarm the community about the future of the Super Pit and to generate discussion on issues of importance. What will happen to the 'big hole' that generates both mining and tourism dollars for the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder as its anticipated closure date of 2021 comes closer? How do you communicate a constantly evolving closure date? Although the process may generate more questions than answers, the project will be discussed at length and with the added benefit of independent community recent research in the form of the public 2009 Closure Consultation and the KCGM 2010 Social Impact Assessment. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY no paper was prepared for this presentation.

The primary factors that determine the marketability of coal from various supply centers in the U.S. are coal quality and supply; i.e. low sulfur, moderate- to high- Btu coals have large market areas when compared to less expensive but poorer quality coals. Price is the major factor in the competitive marketing of similar coal products. Good quality, (moderate- to high- Btu, low sulfur) coals from the Powder River and central Appalachian basins are marketed over large areas of the country, and central Appalachian coal is widely distributed in foreign markets, primarily as coking coal. In contrast, poorer quality bituminous coal (low calorific value and/or high sulfur) from the Illinois Basin, northern Appalachian Basin, and lignite from the Gulf Coast is marketed in or near the States in which it was mined even though the price at the mines may be lower than mine prices for central Appalachian coal. Widespread distribution of sub-bituminous Powder River Basin coal is enhanced by its exceptionally low mining costs, which offsets transportation costs to distant markets.

INTRODUCTION The selection of trackless equipment for underground mining can be a complex engineering problem due to the wide range of equipment sizes and operating modes. Computer simulation is particularly useful in estimating the performance of different systems for specific rock- handling problems. A hybrid simulator, incorporating some of the features of deterministic and stochastic simulation, was developed in order to handle not only queuing delays at loading and dumping points, but a1 so traffic interferences. Any number of vehicles can operate in any one of four basic modes (LHD, LAF, FEL, HFC) in parallel or in series. If the units use common roadways, loading and dumping points, certain operating delays will occur and be registered by the simulator and thus give a better evaluation of the marginal productivity of each additional unit. Based on a typical layout of drawpoints and ore passes for the sub-level stoping method, productivity and operating costs of different rock-handling systems will be examined. 1 . COMPUTER SIMULATION Numerous applications of computer simulations are reported in the 1iterature for various mining problems. Depending on the complexity of the system to be studied, simulation models were conceived with different degrees of sophistication. Three different types of simulators are generally recognized: stochastic, deterministic, and hybrid. Stochastic or Monte Carl o simulation randomly generates items, transactions, or events from some population defined by a frequency distribution and produces some expected future situations. Because this type of simulation is governed by the input of probability distributions, it requires a detailed knowledge of the system to be simulated; it implies expensive and time-consuming studies and reports to gene- rate this input information. A major short- coming of stochastic techniques is in new equipment evaluation, where the lack of data is unavoidable, and in new system design where the conditions are outside the range of the known historical behavior of the equipment. However, probabilistic simulation is almost essential for the study of cyclic queues and traffic problems. Deterministic simulation studies a system by generating performances on the basis of the mechanical capabilities of the vehicles and the physical limitations of the mining scheme. It is based on the engineering principle that the engine converts its energy into a rimpull at the wheels, which is in turn opposed by the rolling resistance and the grade of the ground; the machine is accelerated or decelerated until the tractive and resistive forces are in equilibrium, at which point it moves at constant speed. The information required by this technique, such as rimpull charts and equipment weight, is readily available from equipment suppliers. However, equipment performance at the mining site is also dictated by human and environmental conditions and changes with time and usage. For this reason, deterministic simulation generally overestimates the system capabilities; these must then be adjusted by efficiency factors based on observation and experience. Recently, hybrid simulation models, using both stochastic and deterministic techniques, have been built with some of the events generated stochasticly and others being deterministic. This compromising approach originated at the Pennsylvania State University. O'Nei1 (1966) designed a simulator for truck-and- shovel operations that allows for transportation from multiple faces to mu1tiple destinations. Each truck performs according to its mechanical capabilities while its loading and dumping time and its load fluctuate according to specific probability distributions. A major advance in the simulation of mining systems is due to Sanford's model (1969) of underground coal mining operations. The originality of the model is in the use of an Executive System Control which sets up the initial system, de- fines the operation conditions , and instructs continuously four sub-assemblies representing shuttle cars, trains, continuous miners , and conveyors, which in turn generate a feed-back of their movement to the Executive Control System for further instructions. The model has enough flexibility to simulate simultaneous and sequential jobs that characterize any dynamic system. Sanford's early work evolved slowly to what is known today as the Under- ground Materials Handling Simulator for coal mining (Manula, 1974).

"Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) studies of tetravalent platinum from acidic chloride solutions have been carried out with Alamine 336 as an extractant diluted in kerosene. The title metal shows the inverse behavior at higher acid concentrations. Plot of log D vs. log [Acid], mol.L-1 gave a straight line with a negative slope of 0.8±0.03 indicating the exchange of one mole of hydrogen ions for every mole of platinum(IV) extracted into the organic phase. Extraction of platinum(IV) increases with increase of extractant concentration. The plot of log D vs. log [Extractant], mol.L-1 is linear with slope 1±0.3, indicating the association of one mole of extractant with the extracted metal species. The plot between metal distributions to aqueous to organic phases is 1.3±0.01; it indicates monomeric species was formed in organic phase. Stripping of metal from the loaded organic (LO) with mineral acids such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric acids and bases like ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide are studied. The results indicated that hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide are the better stripping agents when compared with other acids and bases. Increase of temperature decreases the percentage extraction of metal indicating the process is endothermic. Regeneration and recycling capacity of Alamine 336 and extraction behavior of associated elements such as aluminium(III), magnesium(II), cobalt(II), iron(III) and nickel(II) were studied.IntroductionThe demand for platinum group metals (PGM’s) has risen in the last five years expected to keep in rising. Right now, the demand is already beyond the supply. The primary use of PGM’s today is in the automotive industry. Catalytic converters used in the PGM’s process to reduce greenhouse gases. Because of the current demand to reduce the green house effect the expected need for platinum is here stay. Country’s now advancing in the use of car production also are phasing increasing the needs for this metal. Chemical processing also use it, too. These industries account for more than 50% of all platinum production. Jewelry is other primary use of this precious metal whose value is much greater than gold. Other uses include computer data storage, scientific developments, fuel cell technology and in the glass manufacturing processes."

J. J. Kanter.*—The authors of this paper have demonstrated that at 500°F their alloy will elongate, under appropriately adjusted stress, one or two per cent over a period of 6000 hr. Then they show that after the alloy has so elongated, it will still elongate anothcr 40 per cent if it is tested at ordinary temperature. I should like to ask the authors how much more than 2 per cent over a period of 6000 hr. their alloy will elongate at 500°F. H. L. BuRghofE.—We do not know, because we have not carried out stress-rupture tests on this material. I believe your point concerning the desirability of stress-rupture testing is very well taken. In the material that we have subsequently tested we have not seen any signs of deterioration. We do not know how much further it is possible to go beyond the 2 per cent before finding grain-boundary separation. We have not encountered any under the conditions of the test. W. E. Kingston.†—IS this particular type of copper susceptible to strain-aging, and if so at those comparatively low temperatures, is that going to affect the shape of the curve? By strain-aging I mean the phenomena that certain ferrous alloys show in which the resistance to deformation increases suddenly during the low-temperature creep cycle, apparently due to some precipitation type of reaction, perhaps analogous to hydrogen embrittlement. H. L. BUrghoff.—I believe that this material is not subject to strain-aging of this type. It is very high in copper content, of course, nearly loo per cent. There are some very minor impurities and it carries a small amount of phosphorus, which, unless it is present as an oxide, should be in solid solution well within the solubility limits. Charles T. Malcolmson, Chicago, Ill.:—Mr. Blauvelt's admirable paper is a valuable contribution to the literature on briquetting of coal in this country. It should have a special significance for those interested in the commercial development of the coal-briquette industry. I believe that the data included in Mr. Blauvelt's paper will be particularly useful because they represent costs taken from a briquette-plant in actual operation. There are several points touched on in Mr. Blauvelt's paper which may bear comment in the way of emphasis rather than of criticism. In the first place, he has stated a fact which becomes axiomatic to any one who has had any experience in the design, building, or operation of coal-briquette plants, and that is, that the press is only one factor in the successful opera-

The evolution of technology has made the world a more connected place. It continues to change the way we power our homes and vehicles and is leading to a future that seems to be limitless. Limitless as long as we can continue to supply the minerals necessary for technology to produce better iPhones, more efficient electric cars, better wind turbines and sophisticated national defense systems. These minerals, dubbed critical minerals, have surged in importance in every corner of the world and, on Aug. 3-4, they were topic of conversation at the Critical Minerals 2014 conference in Denver, CO. The conference, hosted by SME and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), looked at critical minerals from every angle, from where they are found to what the future might be. Among the minerals that have been called critical are rare earths, a collection of 17 minerals that have become increasingly important as technology continues to advance in everything from communications to energy to national defense. Leading off the conference, David Abraham, senior fellow at the Institute for Analysis of Global Security, explained that, like many people, he is relatively new to rare earths. Unlike most people, though, Abraham developed more than a passing interest in the minerals and has since travelled the world to understand the role of rare earths ? where they are found, how they are mined, how they get to market and, eventually, what applications they are used in. Following his travels, he said he returned concerned about the sector and how the industry will keep up with the demand that only seems to be growing in the modern world. And, Abraham noted, that it is not just the developed world that is driving demand. It stretches even to places like Indonesia, where the average annual income is about $3,000/year. Yet, the nation is one of the most active places in the world for social media with a population that is wired in with all kinds of electronics. The problem facing the sector is, and has been for a long time, and especially since 2010, supply of the minerals. At one time, China produced about 98 percent of the world?s supply and controlled the sector completely. In 2010, as the world began to demand more rare earths and develop other sources, China announced an export ban on rare earths. This changed the game completely, from the production lines all the way to the floor of the U.S. Congress.

"Cornwall stone," a semi-kaolinized granite containing fluorite, has long been used by the English pottery trade instead of feldspar, and "Carolina stone," a similar rock, is now being offered to the American trade. A recent report of the U. S. Bureau of Mines states that trachyte, a glassy volcanic rock, is being used in California instead of feldspar in ceramic bodies. In Germany, phonolite and basalt have been investigated, and possibly also used, as ceramic raw materials, and extensive research has been conducted in Russia in recent years looking to the utilization of the immense bodies of nepheline syenite of the Kola Peninsula, which is the host rock of the apatite deposits now being exploited on a large scale in the Murmansk region; the nepheline is recovered as a by-product of the concentration of the apatite. Long used principally as a raw material for the pottery and allied industries, where, in bodies, glazes, enamels, etc., it serves as a fluxing ingredient and forms, on firing, a glassy bond with the more refractory clay, flint and coloring particles, feldspar has been finding ever increasing employment in glass. In 1936, over half of the nearly quarter of a million tons of feldspar sold in the United States went to the glass trade. Its usefulness for this purpose is due to the resistance to thermal shock which it imparts to glass products, particularly bottles, containers and tableware, because of its alumina content, which averages from 16 to 20 per cent. Active search has been made on the American continent during the past few years for other minerals of feldspathoid type, with comparable or higher alumina content, that may be suitable for glass and other ceramic purposes. One of the most important results of this work has been the delimiting in central Ontario of large bodies of nepheline syenite of excellent ceramic grade.

"Cornwall stone," a semi-kaolinized granite containing fluorite, has long been used by the English pottery trade instead of feldspar, and "Carolina stone," a similar rock, is now being offered to the American trade. A recent report of the U. S. Bureau of Mines states that trachyte, a glassy volcanic rock, is being used in California instead of feldspar in ceramic bodies. In Germany, phonolite and basalt have been investigated, and possibly also used, as ceramic raw materials, and extensive research has been conducted in Russia in recent years looking to the utilization of the immense bodies of nepheline syenite of the Kola Peninsula, which is the host rock of the apatite deposits now being exploited on a large scale in the Murmansk region; the nepheline is recovered as a by-product of the concentration of the apatite. Long used principally as a raw material for the pottery and allied industries, where, in bodies, glazes, enamels, etc., it serves as a fluxing ingredient and forms, on firing, a glassy bond with the more refractory clay, flint and coloring particles, feldspar has been finding ever increasing employment in glass. In 1936, over half of the nearly quarter of a million tons of feldspar sold in the United States went to the glass trade. Its usefulness for this purpose is due to the resistance to thermal shock which it imparts to glass products, particularly bottles, containers and tableware, because of its alumina content, which averages from 16 to 20 per cent. Active search has been wade on the American continent during the past few years for other minerals of feldspathoid type, with comparable or higher alumina content, that, may be suitable for glass and other ceramic purposes. One of the most important results of this work has been the delimiting in central Ontario of large bodies of nepheline syenite of excellent, ceramic grade.

It is generally recognized that the gold thiosulfate leaching system requires the presence of copper and ammonia in order for acceptable leaching kinetics to be observed. However, the presence of copper and ammonia complicate the chemistry of the system as thiosulfate is rapidly oxidized by oxygen under these conditions. In addition, the environmental impact of ammonia would need to be considered before the adoption of this system. This paper describes fundamental studies into the thiosulfate oxygen system. The two reagents for this system are thiosulfate and oxygen, and leaching is carried out at pH < 7. It will be shown using electrochemical techniques that both the reduction of oxygen and the oxidation of gold-to-gold thiosulfate are hindered. Thus, if leaching is to work under these conditions, then both half reactions need to be improved. The use of additives, such as thiourea and lead have been shown to dramatically improve the oxidation of gold and the reduction of oxygen respectively. The leaching of gold in the presence of such additives is discussed.

As this Seminar is on "Progress - Mining and the Environment", I am taking the liberty of extending my address beyond the scope implied by the subject, "Rehabilitation of Mined Land", with a preliminary discussion on broader economic issues relevant to "Progress and Mining in Western Australia" before discussing its effect on the Environments Western Australia is nearly one million square miles in area and has a population density of approzimately one person per square mile. Because of its vastness it has wider climatic variations than any other Australian State. The north is tropical and the south is in the temperate zone. The major portion of the State is an arid plateau with less than 10 inches of mean annual rainfall. The climate, rainfall and soil conditions of the South-West region are more favourable to agriculture than any other part of the State and consequently was settled first. The immediate need of the colonists being food and shelter, the early economy was based on farming and forest products.
