The Phoenix mine is one of NewmontÆs open-pit operations located in Nevada. Mining started in 2005, with the mine producing gold, copper and silver. The mine life is about 20 years. The gold grade estimation uses the Newmont in-house indicator kriging approach to handle the high variability in drill hole composite grades and support mining selectivity. Each block contains up to 200 subblocks with different gold grades. A flotation mill is designed to process oxide and sulfide ores, recovering gold, copper, and silver. An additional copper leach process is currently under study to process low gold and high copper oxide material with low copper recovery in the mill. The metallurgical recoveries and processing costs are dependent on many variables including rock formation, metallurgical domain, cyanide soluble copper and sulfide contents. This paper describes the Newmont in-house indicator kriging procedures and the revenue based mine planning software system implemented at Phoenix mine to address the complexity resulting from multi-process, multi-metal and indicator kriging model.

In recently completed road tunnel projects in Queensland, such as the Airport Link and the Clem7 tunnels, there is a smoke duct running along the roof of the carriageways to extract smoke in case of fire. In New South Wales, no road tunnels have a smoke duct. In the Melbourne City Link tunnels, there is a small smoke duct running along the roof. All of the tunnels are safe as claimed by the designers and authorities. However, there is significant cost associated with providing a full size smoke duct compared with no smoke duct. This paper is going to present a comparison of the road tunnel safety with a smoke duct and those without one from a risk perspective. It further discusses the cost-effectiveness of such provisions and whether similar levels of safety could be achieved without a smoke duct.CITATION:Lau, R, 2014. OIL-WELL depletion curves, to be of value, should show when a well or lease may no longer be operated at a profit. The difference, at any time, between the total expenditures and the total income of a lease or well may be called the lease status. Plotting this lease status against time will give a curve subject to more accurate and different interpretations than the barrels-time curves. According to the hypothetical barrels-time curves shown in Fig. 1, well A, at the end of 16 mo., is producing twice as much oil as well B and will continue to produce for another year whereas well B will cease producing in about 6 months. In the course of the work currently conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute Research Project 48 on identifying sulfur compounds in petroleum, a micromethod was developed (12)5 for catalytically removing the sulfur atom from sulfur compounds. The product is the residual portion of the molecule; the structure otherwise was unaltered except for hydrogenation of any unsaturated bonds that were present in the original compound. Positive identification of sulfur compounds isolated from crude oils is a difficult problem. Direct comparison of properties of the unknown with those of reference compounds is often impossible because of the limited number of reference sulfur compounds available. However, a relatively large number of pure hydrocarbons is available, and the conversion of the sulfur compound to a hydrocarbon enhances the possibility of identification. The technique also can be used to prepare microquantities of scarce hydrocarbons by hydrogenating compounds that are readily available.

Right in the heart of Boston Harbor lies Deer Island, where a ten-year, 6 billion dollar sewage treatment plant is under construction. The 9.5 mile long, 25.5' diameter Effluent Outfall Tunnel is the center piece of this program. A Robbins double-shielded TBM is currently driving this challenging tunnel some 400 feet below sea level. This paper will discuss the set-up and operation of this Tunnel Boring Machine in driving the longest single heading tunnel ever built in North America.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is developing new dewatering technology to permit the recycling of iron values contained in wet steel plant sludges. In laboratory tests, Q-BOP fume sludge was dewatered to 12% moisture by displacing water with acetone in a plate-and-frame pressure filter. Acetone is reclaimed through distillation at lower cost than conventional thermal drying of the sludge. The projected additional energy requirement for acetone treatment of the sludge, including acetone recovery, is $5 to $7 per dry ton.

North Stradbroke Island is a large sand mass offshore from south east Queensland. Dredging for mineral sands commenced there in 1956 and the rehabilitation discussed in this paper was commenced in 1967. The frontal dunes have a long history of instability, with little vegetation prior to mining. Re-establishment of the naturally stable contours is essential, and their rehab- ilitation is described. Vegetated high dunes present different problems requiring attention to regeneration of the native species. Methods developed over the past eight years are proving successful.,

Carrier flotation of anatase impurities from clay using oleate is compared in this study with conventional flotation. The role of relevant parameters such as carrier size, carrier amount, dissolved calcium and carbonate, conditioning speed, pH, time and temperature and collector concentration is investigated in order to elucidate the mechanisms involved in carrier flotation. Addition of coarse calcite particles is found to contribute towards the enhanced separation of anatase from clay mainly due to aggregation of anatase fines with calcite and the subsequent flotation of the aggregates.

I AM well aware that this subject is not strictly in the line of mining engineering, yet as it is a subject with which mining engineers at times have something to do, I have thought, perhaps, it might not be wholly out of place to communicate to the Institute something of the method used in determining deflection, and of its final issue. Having felt a need of some simple formula for determining the deflection of girders of uniform cross-section under any load, I have been led through the counsel of Mr. Frederick J. Slade, to whom I am indebted for many suggestions, to undertake a labor of which I shall in this paper give only some of the most important features. The results arrived at agree with those obtainable from the received formula; of Weisbach, Rankine, and others, but the expressions given by these authors, and by all others that I have at hand, are of such a form that they are not easily applied by those whose higher mathematics have become rusty from disuse, and they require, moreover, too much labor in their application to be of practical value. The general formula that I have adopted is similar to that given by Rankine, and is deflection = [mWl3 -El], in which l is the span, W the total load, E the modulus of elasticity, I the moment of inertia of the uniform cross-section of the girder, and m a factor depending for its value on the mode of distribution of the load. The problem then is to find the value of this factor m in the formula, and for some distributions of the load it leads to a number of mathematical difficulties. "Hydrocyclone-thickener circuit is a promising solution to enhance the dewatering efficiency in mineral industries. The challenges in the circuit is reducing particle size in the thickener feed and the good feature is a rise in the retention time of sediments in the thickener. In this work, the effect of particle size, bed depth and residence time on the thickener performance were investigated. In this order, pilot scale columns were employed at Sarcheshmeh and Shahrebabak copper complexes. Furthermore, the influence of residence time was differentiated due to the variations in the bed depth and settling flux. Moreover, a new approach was introduced to estimate solids residence time in the thickener. results indicated that with smaller particles that are introduced to the column, the bed density as well as thickener discharge solids concentration dropped significantly. It was found that thickener discharge solids concentration fell from 59.6 to 33.8 % with reducing particle size from 130 to 22 µm in the settling flux of 20 t/m2/day. Additionally, it was found that longer residence time and deeper bed resulted in an increase in the thickener performance while the bed depth has a stronger effect. It was proved that employing a hydrocyclone prior to the thickener resuted in an increase in the dewatering efficiency.INTRODUCTION Thickeners are widely employed in mineral industries to recycle tailings and concentrate water content. A limited fraction of suspension water content is recycled using a thickener. For instance, about 50 percent of tailings water content could be recycled using a shallow bed thickener during copper processing. Since the scarcity of global water resources became more serious, the demand for improving dewatering efficiency in mineral industries became more significant [1]. A number of solutions were recommended to enhance dewatering efficiency of thickeners including optimization of current thickeners, employing deep bed thickeners and utilizing thickener-filter or hydrocyclone-thickener circuits. Optimization of existing thickeners is essential, however, it does not meet the significant demand for recycled water. The application of deep bed thickeners (known as paste thickeners) has been rising in the mineral industries [2] due to a higher dewatering efficiency while its costs is remarkable."

Introduction The principal thrust of the US Department of Energy (DOE) coal preparation R&D program is to develop technology to reduce ash and sulfur content of US coals to levels where the resultant product can be formulated into a high quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. The coal preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories. Research is subdivided into three areas - coal characterization, beneficiation, and ancillary unit operations.

A process consisting of leach, continuous countercurrent decantation, resin-in-column ion exchange, evaporative crystallization of beryllium sulfate, and decomposition of the sulfate was developed for Spor Mountain, Utah, ores. The process is metallurgically sound, has a minimum of process steps, and is applicable to a wide variety of beryllium ores. The most novel aspect of the process is a resin system of ion exchange which is highly selective for beryllium and which rejects substantially all impurities except for minor amounts of aluminum, magnesium, fluorine, and sulfate in addition to beryllium. The oxide from sulfate decomposition meets specifications of potential users.

In common high intensity magnetic separators, the magnetic particles are deposited on ferromagnetic matrices, such as expanded metals, steel balls or grooved plates, inserted into a strong magnetic field. The nonmagnetic material is flushed through the matrix chamber. Discharging the magnetic particles is only possible if the magnetic field is reduced to zero (e.g. high gradient magnetic filtration for the purifying of kaolin) or the matrix chamber is moved out of the field by a rotor (e.g. the Jones Separator). Therefore, these separators perform only in a batch or semicontinuous mode. A real continuous operation requirs transport of the deposited magnetic material to an outlet where it can leave the separation chamber inside the field. One possibility for accomplishing such separation and transport is through the use of a rotating induction body with a certain shape, such as a spiral.

Although small scale mining is regarded by many as of historical value only, this kind of mining activity is still much more widespread than is usually assumed. It has been estimated that it produces as much as ten per cent of the global mineral output. More significantly this figure is often much higher for many of the developing countries of Africa, Asia and South America, signifying the relatively greater contribution of small scale mining to the economies of those countries. It is also noted that small scale mining has always been a feature of mineral production in New Zealand and Australia. An attempt is made to define small scale mining, and the factors determining the suitability of small scale mining operations are discussed. The state of the art in small scale mining is reviewed and the author endeavours to rationalise the important parameters which contribute to successful small scale mining operations and discusses how these parameters may be optimised. The benefits of small scale mining to the mining industry as a whole and to the community at large are outlined. The paper concludes by emphasising the necessity to maintain small scale mining and 'explores' its future 'prospects'.

The present survey indicates 'that the average volatility of motor gasoline now being marketed throughout the country falls well within the limits of Federal Specifications. As would be expected, there is a slight decrease in volatility as compared with the gasoline marketed last wine:., but on the average the gasoline sold today is about the same as that sold last summer. During the past five years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States. To obtain a sample of each gasoline sold is obviously impracticable, but the cities in which samples have been collected have been so chosen as to be representative of the more important marketing territories. It is believed, therefore, that the samples obtained are indicative of the quality of gasoline marketed throughout the country.

Mine managers rely on their experience, section foreman's daily reports and occasional time studies to make important production, maintenance and forecasting decisions. This information is often subjective and imprecise, consumes expensive engineers time, is often biased and is restricted to short time periods. Managers need better information. Furthermore, if a recently purchased machine is being evaluated, a large increase (>10%) in productivity may be obvious, but small increases are usually masked by other variables. In today's highly competitive markets, cumulative small changes are important, especially since managers have already exhausted most available, obvious avenues of improvement. A technique to separate these charges from effects of other variables and to quantify the target effect is necessary. CSM researchers are addressing this need by developing an intelligent decision support system (IDSS). It provides key production and maintenance information to support management decisions by recognizing patterns in mining machine sensor data and representing knowledge about mine management, operations, layout and equipment. A continuous miner section at Western Fuels-Utah Inc.'s Deserado Mine in Rangely, CO is the test facility for the research. Power transducers located in the sections load center provide kilowatt versus time data from continuous section equipment. The IDSS pattern recognition algorithms classify the kilowatt versus time patterns into individual machine operating modes. It produces an output similar to a typical industrial engineering time study but continuously, automatically and without an engineer in the section. It is relatively easy for a time-study engineer to identify the stop and end points of a cycle element and classify it by looking at the machine and glancing at a stop watch. The problem is that monitoring system hardware and software do not have these unique capabilities. Consequently, IDSS algorithms must automatically define the begin and end points of machine tasks and identify the task by recognizing patterns in kilowatt versus time data. However, many mines have file drawers of time-study type data that are not very useful. So, IDSS contains the knowledge representation subsystem (IDSS/KRS) to produce short reports containing only key information. This is difficult because mine environments continually change and information requirements differ for each management level. Consequently, IDSS/KRS must learn and adapt to new conditions in a dynamic mining environment. Western Fuels-Utah owns and operates the Deserado Mine, located about 19 km (12 miles) northeast of Rangely, CO (Upadhyay, 1988; King and Eros, 1988). One longwall and two continuous miner sections produce about 900 kt (1 million st) of coal annually for the Deseret Generation and Transmission Cooperative's 4000 MW power plant located near Bonanza, UT. Three mine monitoring systems control the underground mine, the preparation plant and the unit train load out. Pattern recognition IDSS/PRS produces a listing of begin and end times for each machine operating event as shown is Table 1.

A numerical method of solving the partial differential equations which describe the one-dimensional displacement of oil by gas has been presented. Possible extension of the method to treat multidimensional flow is discussed, and the limitations of this extension are indicated. Using this method, it is possible to allow for the existence of a gas cap, the presence of any number of gas-injection or oil-production wells and the evolution of dissolved gas from the oil. It is also possible to allow for variation in the cross-sectional area, elevation, porosity and permeability of the reservoir. The influence of relative permeability and the force of gravity in the direction of flow upon the displacement is considered. The influence of capillary pressure upon the flow and the effect of gravity in the direction perpendicular to flow are neglected. The physical properties 01 the fluids are considered to be Junctions of pressure only, and equilibrium between contiguous phases is assumed. The numerical calculations can be readily carried out by the use of a digital computer. Several example analyses have been performed using the IBM 704 computer, and about one-third of an hour of computing time was required per case. Reservoir behavior predicted by use of this numerical method was compared to data obtained by other methods for three cases — complete pressure maintenance, dissolved-gas drive and gas-cap drive. The independent solutions to these problems were obtained by analytical solution, laboratory experiment and field data, respectively. Agreement of the numerical solution with data from these sources was good; this agreement establishes the convergence and accuracy of the numerical method. INTRODUCTION Most petroleum reservoirs can be produced by any one of several alternative programs. When a reservoir is produced by primary methods, production economics can be influenced by controlling the number and location of wells and the flow rate of each well. An even greater influence may be achieved by augmenting the recovery of oil obtainable by primary methods. This can be accomplished by injection of fluids such as water, natural or enriched gas or a bank of light liquid hydrocarbons. Selection of the most desirable operation requires a means of predicting the reservoir behavior which will result from each of the several alternative programs. The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical method for predicting the behavior of reservoirs produced by gas-cap drive, dissolved-gas drive or pressure maintenance by gas injection. The method described herein takes cognizance of phase changes caused by a decline or an increase (due to gas injection) in reservoir pressure, of the presence of a gas cap and of the effect of gravity on the flow of gas and oil. Relative permeability relationships are used to define the flow properties of the rock. Allowance is made for variation in cross-sectional area, elevation, permeability and porosity of the reservoir. Both the influence of capillary pressure upon the flow and pressure gradients in the gas cap are neglected. Whenever a liquid phase and a gas phase are in contact, they are assumed to be in equilibrium. The physical properties of the fluids are considered to be functions of pressure only. Therefore, if the method is to be used to predict the effects of a gas-injection program, mixtures of the injected gas and formation crude should-have the same physical properties as mixtures of formation gas and crude. The equations to be presented in this paper apply only to a one-dimensional case; therefore, they neglect the influence of gravity in the direction transverse to the flow. As is well known, this gravitational influence may lead to overriding of oil by gas. Consequently, this procedure as presented is most applicable to long, thin reservoirs for which gravity overriding is not important. On the other hand, the equations presented can be generalized to treat multidimensional flow and, hence, to consider gravity overriding, if desired. A word of caution on two points is advisable here, however. First, the authors have not demonstrated the accuracy of the numerical technique for multidimensional flow. While the light metals are recognized generally as a distinct group in technical literature, economic classifications and data usually still treat them as part of the nonferrous group of metals. However, the economic characteristics of the light metals also differ markedly from those of other nonferrous metals. The distinctiveness of the light metals, as, a group and individually, becomes evident when their growth, since World War II is compared with that of other metals, as in Table 14.3.1. The growth of light-metals production has been much sharper than that of other metals. A weighted average for the light metals shows an increase of 112% during the 1958 to 1968 period. This compares with a 62% increase in the "All Primary Metals" component of the Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production. The contrast was even sharper during the next six years (1968-1974), with light metals production up another 50% as against a 21 % increase in the FRB Primary Metals production index. The most important reason, however, for considering light metals separately is the trend and pace of technological change and not their distinctive statistics. Technology both creates and demands increasingly sophisticated materials. As technology advances and as all the world makes more extensive use of advanced technology, the importance of the light metals is likely to accelerate rapidly. There may be a profound clue to the future in the fact that light metals were predominant among the materials used in the construction of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. In determining what materials to use for the spacecraft and its equipment, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has explained that it did not look to "some of the more exotic metals" and relied instead on "generally proven materials." Accordingly, it apparently used a wide variety of metals, including precious metals, rare earths, special steels, copper, and light metals. What seems particularly significant is that, in seeking performance, NASA relied as heavily as it did on the light metals. Materials breakdown estimates show that aluminum accounted for over 75% of the materials used, titanium for another 5%, and magnesium was also used. Thus, light metals accounted for over 80%' of the materials used for the Apollo 11 spacecraft. The light metals are also unique in their availability. They rank high in abundance among the elements in the earth's crust. Aluminum is the third most abundant element, after oxygen and silicon, with magnesium ranking eighth, and titanium ninth. Among the structural metals, aluminum is the most abundant in the earth's crust, iron is second, magnesium third, and titanium fourth. This potential availability of light metals provides strong incentives for continuing improvements in process technology, because of two major national problems: (1) there is
