"Excessive wear rates on railway wheels can result in rolling-stock derailments. If wear is detected early the possible derailments can be prevented by prematurely replacing wheelsets, although the inventory cost and maintenance downtime remain a challenge. In the current study, wheels were introduced and monitored in-service for two years to investigate the cause of excessive wear rates. The wear rates and stresses were calculated for the wheels suitable for a maximum load of 26 t per axle. Microstructural and mechanical properties were analysed. As expected, the general microstructure of all the wheels tested was pearlitic. Although all the wheels complied with the tensile strength requirements, stress calculations confirmed material distortion on excessively worn wheels whereas trial wheels revealed yield strength exceeding the yield criterion. High wear rates observed on the wheels were a result of low yield strength relative to the load per axle. The typical wear mechanism found was due to a combination of rolling contact fatigue and abrasive brake wear. Despite compliance of the wheels with existing requirements regarding material and mechanical properties (hardness, ultimate tensile strength), it is recommended that the yield strength must also be taken into consideration as a critical parameter.IntroductionRailway wheels are used to support the wagon mass and guide the wagon along the tracks (Park, 1974). The wheels and rails must be able to tolerate the applied tangential forces in order to effect wagon dynamic performance and reduce material deformation (Ghidini et al., 1994; RSE_TE_SPC_0045, 2011; AAR M107/M 208 Specification, 2011. Over the past ten years, the South African coal wagon maintenance depot has experienced excessive hollow wheel wear rates on the heavy haul line wheels. The maximum load of Jumbo wagons on the coal line is 104 t, or 26 t per axle. Although the maintenance intervention cycle for wheelsets was two years, between February 2011 and August 2012 some wheels experienced excessive hollow wear. Hollow wear is regarded as wear exceeding 2 mm on the central portion of the wheel tread (RSE_TE_SPC_0045, 2011). This happened despite the fact that these wheels were manufactured and certified according to the requirements of AAR M107/208 standard for carbon steel wheels (AAR M107/M 208 Specification,. 2011) and the local wheel RS/ME/SP 021 standard specification (RS / ME / SP / 021 REV 5 (2013). The AAR standard only specifies a minimum hardness as a required mechanical property and the local standard specifies hardness and minimum tensile strength only. In general, an increase in hardness will improve the rolling/sliding wear resistance of steel. This relationship of hardness and wear resistance was found to be true only in a situation where solid and similar alloys are in contact (Singh, Khatirkar and Sapate, 2015). The sliding wear resistance of a material is usually estimated using Archard’s equation (Liu and Li, 2001)."

Surface treatments like laser shock peening (LSP) induce residual stresses penetrating up to 1 mm deep, surpassing traditional methods, thus significantly increasing the potential impact on materials prevalent in the automotive and aerospace sectors. Through extensive fatigue testing and fractography investigations, it was determined that LSP resulted in a fatigue life increase of over five times for aluminium alloy AA7075-T6 and titanium Ti-6Al-4V. Increased fatigue life was also noted in AISI316 stainless steel, which showed increases in fatigue life of 1.7x. While fatigue life in all cases improved, the efficacy of LSP was shown to be material dependent.

Exploration for gold .deposits on Hispaniola has taken place sporadically over the years but has expanded in the past decade. There are veintype, disseminated, alluvial and elluvial deposits. Investigations were previously undertaken in Haiti by combined Haitian, Bureau of Mines, and UN geological teams at Grand Bois Limbe(Milot) and Cap Coq areas. Later studies were conducted at the Miches and Moncion districts. Gold occurrences were reported in quartz, silicic-barite veins and gossans. An important deposit ?at Pueblo Viejo is? a disseminated type where extraction is taking place in the oxidized zone. Exploration by Japanese and West German firms with local geologists are described in this paper together with Pueblo Viejo, Miches, Restauracion, Milot, and Meme ?areas where occurrences are known. Copper deposits with associated gold va1ues are also described. These include vein deposits in Central Cordillera and disseminated deposits at Terrier Rouge and Blondin.

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

In this first of two papers, we examine the basic fundamentals of mass and heat balance modeling, and apply these concepts to several flowsheets using a simple spreadsheet model. In this way, we aim to demonstrate how such models are not only easy to construct, but can also be indispensable for comparing various flowsheet alternatives, for making rational economic decisions, and for developing a basic understanding of existing process behaviour.

Introduction Since 1930 numerous improvements have been made in equipment designed for the mechanical removal of broken ore in underground mining operations. New applications of mechanical equipment, as? well as improvements and adaptations of well established systems, are being made continually. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss present-day equipment for the removal or transfer of broken ore by means of a powered hoist and scraper arrangement. The terms used throughout the paper are those commonly employed in the trade literature and by mining men. The terms slusher hoist, hoist, and scraper hoist are used inter-changeably to mean a machine, powered by compressed air or electricity, with drums for the winding of wire rope. The tail rope, also known as the pull-back rope or return rope, drags the empty scraper toward the tail-sheave, that is, back to the loading point. No attempt is made to cover the entire field of application of scraping methods. Rather it is the? writer's desire to emphasize the fundamental principles of scraping practice and design and to relate them to some modern applications. The available literature on scraping practice has been freely used. together with personal observation and information and advice of practising engineers and representatives of companies manufacturing slushing equipment.

The problem of good engineering practice and. of good conservation practice in oil production is that of keeping gas in solution. This can best be done by producing a field as a water-drive field. Some degree of water drive is believed to be present in most fields but in the past most fields have been produced too rapidly to allow water drive to be effective. Ultimate recovery should be So per cent greater for fields produced by water drive over that from gas-expansion fields. Wide spacing will permit fields of low-degree water drive to be produced effectively as water-drive fields. INTRODUCTION NEGLECTING all the complicated scientific and technical argument that leads to the conclusion, the solution of the problem of good production practice, of good engineering practice, and of good conservation practice in oil production is to keep gas in solution. This can best be done by producing fields at a rate low enough to make effective the water drive, which exists, it is generally believed, to a degree great enough to be made effective in more than 80 per cent of the fields of the United States. Oil is being so produced in the Ten Section field of California; the Hobbs field of New Mexico; the Yates, Hastings, Friendswood, Anahuac fields and the main sand of the Conroe pool, in Texas; the Magnolia pool in Arkansas, and doubtless in many other pools. The measures of success in the efforts to achieve the solution of the problem are the maintenance of bottom-hole pressure and the prevention of an increase in gas-oil ratio. Some decline from the original bottom-hole pressure and the production of some gas are essential. A pressure gradient from the reservoir to the well is necessary and at least as much gas must be produced as that in solution in a barrel of oil. Once the optimum pressure and the gas-oil ratio have been established, they should be maintained. How common is water drive in oil and gas pools? General opinion is that some degree of water drive is almost universal. Theoretically, this conclusion appears to be a sound one. According to our present understanding of the processes of sedimentation, we would expect to find all sands or sandstone charged with connate water unless it had been displaced by some other fluid, such as fresh water percolating into the beds at the outcrop, or oil and gas, or gas only, in reservoirs. The fact that the original pressure of the fluid system in most reservoirs is approximately that of the hydrostatic head of water for the corresponding depth indicates that the sands are charged with water, and common experience in drilling into the extensions of the porous zones beyond the reservoir is to find them watercharged. In September 1992, mining in Mexico was opened again to foreign investment by President Salinas-de Gortari, after thirty years of "Mexicanization" of mining industry which limited foreign participation up to a 49 % (or 34 % in case of national reserves) on a Mexican mining corporation. During said period mining in Mexico was controlled by four or five big mining companies and besides mining production was focused mainly on silver, lead, zinc, copper and fluorspar. Suddenly in middle of a big crisis on Mexican mining industry due to low prices of minerals in the world and also in a period on which it seems that mining industry in the United States and Canada has been condemned to die for environmental reasons, it appears a new Mexican Mining Law to permit foreigners to participate in mining in Mexico' trough Mexican mining corporations that they may control up to 100 %

INTRODUCTION THE present study, based largely upon phase equilibrium diagrams and other theoretical considerations but nevertheless addressed primarily to the practical metallurgist, has been undertaken with a view to discovering what light can be thrown upon the role of alumina in slags. According to Liddell (23), "alumina apparently acts as .a base if much silica is present, as an acid if the silica is low, always as a nuisance." Newton and Wilson (26) state that .alumina "is never added intentionally, as it makes the slag viscous, and is generally an undesirable constituent of slags". Camp and Francis (3) sum up their views by saying, "alumina is seldom used intentionally as a flux, but it is present in nearly all raw material, hence unavoidable". One has only to read The Function of Alumina in Slags, by Henrich (I3), and the very extensive discussion that followed the presentation of his paper, to realize that, before the days of phase equilibrium diagrams, it was a very serious question indeed as to whether alumina should be calculated as a basic, acid, or neutral constituent. Opinions then differed widely, as well they might; today, even though no categorical answer can be given to the question raised, the function of alumina can be at least partly clarified by a study of the fundamental work done by the Geophysical Laboratory in Washington and by certain universities in both America and Europe. It will be a source of gratification to Canadian metallurgists and ceramists to know that work of this type is now under way in the recently organized Physical and Crystal Chemistry Section of the Mines Branch, Ottawa, and that results of practical value have in fact already been obtained.

"Environmental considerations are a key driver within marine mining consenting processes across different national and international legislative regimes and are critical in shaping the global public perception of the industry. As a result, it is vital that mining companies seeking to operate within marine environments establish a robust understanding of the sensitivities of the seabed environments in which they are active, the impacts of their activities and the ability of the environment to recover from these impacts. The significant risks of failing to do so include an inability to either obtain or maintain operating permits. At the individual project level, the environmental effects of any given development project are typically defined within the scope of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). For well-established industries operating in well-studied environments this approach typically works well. However, where emerging industries or existing industries that are operating within new environments are concerned, there may be significant knowledge gaps pertaining to our understanding of how specific anthropogenic practices or activities interact with the marine environment. These knowledge gaps can cause significant uncertainties pertaining to the likely significant effects of a project. Such uncertainties may result in barriers to industry and economic progress, increased consenting risks, increased project costs to be borne by individual project developers through the acquisition of additional environmental data during the pre-consent or post-consent project phases, project delays and/or significant increases in environmental monitoring burdens with corresponding increases in project costs."

The difficulties inherent in the production of alumina by the formation of potassium alum and its subsequent thermal dehydration and decomposition have been overcome , to a large extent , in a process developed at the Boulder City Station of the Bureau of Mines . This process is applicable to the reserves of alunite known to occur in several Western States and , possibly , to certain clay and low-grade bauxite deposits known to exist in this country . The operations sequence of the process is shown in the flow sheet (fig . 1) . Only those steps included within the heavy line are considered in this report . Four different procedures for dehydration of alum were investigated ; ( 1 ) Spray drying , ( 2 ) rotary - kiln drying , ( 3 ) dry grinding in a thermal ball mill , and ( 4 ) dehydration in the vertical- column flash dehydrator . Based upon fuel requirements and other practical considerations , the vertical- column dehydrator , or some modification of its operating principle , offers the botter possibility for commercial use .

Coal is mined by both surface and underground methods and its extraction is normally characterized by numerous hazards that can lead to catastrophic accidents, which result in devastating effects such as injuries or fatalities, damage to mining assets, and destruction of mineral resources. These hazards exist due to the ability of coal to support combustion and its association with toxic, flammable, and explosive gases. Underground coal mining entails higher safety risks than opencast coal mining, chiefly because of issues relating to mine ventilation and mine collapse. Furthermore, coal mine collapses mostly occur due to crumbling of mining supports, especially in room and pillar mining systems. To avoid such adverse occurrences, safety management systems need to be in place. This study reviews the various technological safety systems and principles that are used for safe-rescue and self-escape of miners in underground coal fires, particularly in South Africa, using data obtained from Mines Rescue Services in Carltonville, South Africa. The outcome of the review shows that practising safety culture has been given priority across many South African underground coal mines through setting up safety management systems and encouraging workers to stay committed to safety principles.

"According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires in nine states. This is considered to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards (Richmond, 2017).Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled, can burn for years and, in fact, one of the most wellknown mine fires in the United States is the mine fire in the Borough of Centralia, PA, that began on May 27, 1962. Reportedly, officials decided to clean up the local landfill for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday by burning the garbage on the site. Unfortunately, the landfill was located on the site of an abandoned strip-pit mine on the edge of the Borough (Dekok, 2009). The strip pit had been left open after being excavated around 1935 and was approximately 23 m (75 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) deep. It is believed that the lack of a properly constructed noncombustible shale barrier in the strip pit enabled the fire to spread to adjacent carbonaceous refuse material and then to nearby coal mine workings (PA DEP, 2017). As time went on, the fire grew and spread under the Borough and directly affected the residents despite various efforts to extinguish the fire by the state and federal governments (Fig.1). In 1984, a voluntary program was begun to move residents from their homes. Many accepted buyout offers for their properties and moved elsewhere and after leaving, their homes were demolished. In 1992, the state used eminent domain to take control of all the property within the Borough. In 2013, after years of litigation, the eight remaining residents were allowed to stay for as long as they lived. Today, only a few buildings remain within the Borough (Centralia, PA, 2014). This fire has been burning for more than 55 years."

An unprecedented growth in demand for coal exports has placed pressure on multi-user coal chains to guarantee that their capacity expansion projects will meet the required demand. These projects, however, are taking place in an increasingly complex commercial and technical environment - competing rail and coal terminal service providers as well as a myriad of competing mine operators, all needing to operate in an increasingly integrated manner to get the most out of expensive shared assets.Increasing system complexity and integration has driven the need for more holistic and sophisticated analysis tools. The capacity of coal chain subsystems, such as mine, rail and port, can no longer be determined effectively in isolation. Understanding the nature of the interactions between these subsystems, their sensitivity to uncertainty and the resultant capacity of the integrated system is the key to both maximising value and minimising risk.Recently, TSG has worked closely together with the Integrated Logistics Company and a number of key stakeholders in the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain to develop independent system master plans. These master plans have provided a quantitative and rational assessment of coal chain capacity in its current state and a prediction of its capacity once a pipeline of committed capacity improvements is in place. The effect of fluoride inclusions on the properties of titanium produced from the Bureau of Mines developed induction slag melting process is of concern to members of the titanium industry. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of CaF2 inclusions on the properties of titanium and its survival rate during melting. The data were obtained from single induction-slag-melted ingots prepared with the normal addition of 4 pct and also with 2- and 1-pct additions of CaF2 slag. The results of this effort showed that the mechanical properties of single-induction-slag-melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy exceed the minimum values specified in Aerospace Materials Specification for Titanium Alloy Bars and Forgings AMS4928H, but these materials are much more notch sensitive in fatigue than normal Ti-6A1-4V alloy titanium. First and second vacuum-arc remelts of single-induction-slag-melted ingots fragmented and increased the number of inclusions, while reductions in the amount of flux resulted in an upward trend in the spatial distance between pores in an x-y plane.

Field tests at a number of large mineral processing operations have been undertaken to better understand the wear life impact of different aspects of pump design, materials of construction and maintenance procedures. Data are presented for wear rates, and typical result variability is explored. To improve the availability of pumping equipment in a milling circuit it is not only important to improve the wear life, but also reduce the variability in the wear life of components so that the incidence of premature failure is lessened. Localised gouging wear due to flow separation and turbulent eddy formation is often the point at which part-holing occurs. A number of improvements to the design of pump impeller and throatbush (suction side liners) to reduce the localised gouging wear are outlined. Also, results are presented on the use of composite materials (mix of metal, rubber and ceramic) for throatbush materials to protect specific areas against wear.

ALTHOUGH enormous tonnages of sulfide lead and lead-silver ores are treated by flotation, the products of flotation mills treating oxidized ores of lead and silver are almost negligible. However, each year there is a slight tonnage increase, and it is possible, should a sizeable oxidized lead ore tonnage be developed, the field will become an important one. In 1918, the Shattuck-Arizona Copper Co. erected a plant at Warren, Ariz., for the treatment of oxidized gold-silver-lead ores. Glenn L. Allen worked out the metallurgy for this plant, employing tabling, followed by flotation concentration. The Shattuck-Denn Mining Co., successors to the Shattuck-Arizona Co., now employs straight flotation in the same mill, treating about 200 tons daily. In 1922, the San Diego mill of the American Smelting & Refining Co., in the Parral district, Chihuahua, Mexico, started operating a 600-ton mill on a mixed sulfide-oxide gold-silver-lead ore. Tables and flotation are used here, and about 200 tons of oxidized slime treated by flotation. In 1923, the Eureka Holly Mining Co. started operating a 90-ton mill at Eureka, Nev., using tables and flotation, on an oxidized lead-silver ore. In 1924, the American Smelting & Refining Co. started a 250-ton mill in northern Peru, to treat a high grade oxidized gold-silver ore with very low lead values. In 1924, the Grand Central Mining Co. started a 200-ton flotation mill on old oxidized gold-silver-lead tailings at Fairbank, Ariz. In 1926, the Compania International Minera, a subsidiary of the Union Corporation of London, started a 250-ton flotation mill on oxidized lead-silver ores, and during April of this year, the Phelps-Dodge Corp. will probably start a 250-ton mill at Warren, Ariz., on oxidized lead-silver ores, similar to those being treated in the Shattuck-Denn mill.

Some of the early experiments on the oxidation temperature of coal1 were undertaken in England in connection with a study of self-heating, or spontaneous combustion. It was then suspected that coals with low oxidation temperature were most likely to ignite by self-heating, but further experiments showed that many additional factors were involved. The oxidation temperature has importance as a physical property or characteristic of the coal. While only a few of the physical properties have been studied, they appear to have basic significance2 in the ultimate classification of all coals. When reliable data become available on the oxidation temperatures, as determined by standard and adequate methods, it should provide an additional basis for classification and comparative evaluation. Oxidation Temperature Defined For such a heterogeneous substance as coal is known to be, no simple definition of oxidation temperature can be established on a theoretical basis. If coals were homogeneous and of simpler structure, the accepted definition of "ignition temperature " as applied to simple gaseous mixtures might be adopted; that is, the temperature at which self-heating of the mixture sets in. But most coals self-heat slightly even at storage temperature, as evidenced by spontaneous combustion, and the definition for gases cannot be applied to coals with any exactness. By subjecting coals to suitable experimental conditions various oxidation characteristics can be obtained and examined for critical or significant stages of the oxidation process. Oxidation temperature itself must then be defined on the basis of such experimental results. The South African Mining, Extraction, Research, Development and Innovation (SAMERDI) strategy was launched in 2019 with the goal of modernizing the mining industry. It comprises three major research initiatives: improvement in the efficiency of extraction and health and safety in current mining operations, development of fully mechanized systems to mine narrow tabular ore bodies in hard rock, and development of extraction systems to break rock without using explosives. The crosscutting Advanced Orebody Knowledge (AOK) program seeks to develop and implement drilling and geophysical technologies that can characterize the rock mass ahead of mining and identify potentially hazardous geological features. This knowledge will be integrated with information derived from seismic monitoring. Mining methods, layouts and rock support systems will be adjusted accordingly to mitigate the risk of rockbursts. Boreholes are routinely drilled ahead of mine workings using diamond-impregnated bits. The drill core is logged to identify lithology and geological structures (especially dykes and faults that may be seismogenic), sample the ore body for grade control, and detect areas that may contain water and/or flammable gas. Methods and technology to improve the efficiency of drilling and maximize the information obtained from the drilling process, borehole core, and the borehole itself are being investigated. A range of geophysical technologies are being developed to map the rock mass from the skin of the excavation to a distance of several tens of meters. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is used to map the geometry of the excavation, including prominent joint, vein and fracture sets and the presence and performance of rock support elements and systems. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is used to penetrate deeper into the rock mass and image joints, fractures bedding planes that influence the stability of the hanging and side walls. Image processing techniques known as ‘seismic attributes’ are being applied to the radargrams to improve interpretation. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and various active and passive seismic techniques (e.g. Tunnel Seismic Profiling (TSP), ambient noise tomography) achieve even greater penetration into the rock mass. Finally, machine learning is used to improve the processing and interpretation of seismic and radar data.
