"INTRODUCTION The potash mineral receiving the most attention in the newly discovered. New Mexico-Texas potash district near Carlsbad, N. M. is sylvite (potassium chloride). Sylvite contains more potassium than any other mineral. Merchantable high-grade deposits have been found, and those of lower grade may be enriched to a high degree of purity by refining methods. Deposits containing sylvite were the first to be developed and axe the only ones being mined.However, many other minerals that contain potash occur in the salt beds of the Carlsbad District. Of these the more important are polyhalite, carnallite, langbeinite, leonite, and kainite. The nature of the deposits and their mineralogy have been described in detail by members of the United States Geological Survey. 4/Langbeinite, although not so abundant in these deposits as carnallite and has particular interest because the potash is in the form of the sulphate and as such commands a premium in terms of K20 unit. ACCORDING to recently published statistics, it is predicted that as much oil must be produced during the next 16 years as has been produced during the past 75, in order to satisfy the high rate of consumption of petroleum products. During 1934, over 17,000 oil wells were completed in the United States, and it is expected that over 20,000 additional wells will be drilled during the current year. Were it not for the remarkable progress made during recent years in the improvement of drilling technique and in the development of equipment used in the production phase of the oil industry, it is doubtful whether sufficient oil could be produced to meet present requirements. A few years ago, wells seldom were deeper than 3500 to 4000 ft., owing to the limitations of the drilling methods and equipment employed. Today, however, through the application of scientific drilling methods and the adaptation of modern equipment and improved materials, many wells range from 6000 to 8000 ft, in depth, and a few recent completions exceed 10,000 feet.

In a recent publication,31 Darken has derived an equation to describe thermodynamic behavior in ternary metallic solutions with compositions near pure component 1: Eq. [I] is understood to be a general equation, consistent with the ternary Gibbs-Duhem equation, which is proposed as a logical formalism in view of observed behavior in some binary metallic solutions31'32 rich In Eq. and am are constants obtainable from the 1-2 and 1-3 binaries. The parameter 023 may be determined from measurements on the ternary The purpose of this discussion is to compare Eq. [I) or [3] with other ternary formulations involving binary terms, within the regions of validity of Eqs. [I], [2], and [3]. First, the ternary point is considered to be at the intersection of two composition paths, one with constant N1 and another with constant N2/N3 as shown in Fig. 10. The terms in Eq. [3] may be related to the binary points shown by multiplying the first term on the right-hand side of Eq. [3] by N2 (1) /l -N1, the second term by the third term by and the fourth term by each multiplier being unity: It should be noted here that no suggestion has been made that either the binary or the ternary systems form regular solutions. However, Eq. [5] and hence Eq. [3] shows that the contribution made to the ternary excess free energy from the 1-2 and 1-3 binaries has the same form as for a regular ternary system.1 Before considering the term a23 for the above case, a second geometrical relationship is examined with the ternary point at the intersect ion of three composition paths with constant N1/N2, N2/N3, and Nl/N3, respectively, as shown in Fig. 11. A determination of feasibility of a new surface mining project requires a study in orderly fashion through the procedures outlined in Section 2 and the previous two chapters of this section. The information and data collected as described in Chapters 3.1 and 3.2 must be correlated, and the many variables that affect the venture must be reviewed. This review will furnish the mining engineer with the information required to make a preliminary evaluation of estimated profit in the venture. It is at this time that management must make yet another decision whether to drop or continue the project. 3.3-1. Maps. For the purpose of collecting, outlining, and correlating a large portion of the data required for a surface mining feasibility study, maps are essential. A map to a mining engineer is like a sheet of music to a musician, or a blueprint to a designer. It provides a pictorial method of presenting mining information not only for practical application in estimating and planning, but also for demonstration of physical relationships to those charged with decision-making responsibilities. GENERAL AREA MAP. The first step in the process of graphic information assembly is the preparation of a "small scale" general area map. Such a map may cover a mining district, a market area, a watershed area or district, or the whole or a section of a geologic feature such as an iron formation or coal seam. An example of such a general area map is shown in Fig. 3.3-la which outlines the various coal mining areas in the vicinity of a proposed "mine-mouth" power station, the Liddell Power Station Project. If Quadrangle Maps of the United States Geological Survey, or their equivalent, are available for an area, a common and very effective technique is to superimpose mining data on these maps, either directly or by means of transparent overlays. Molten salts have been used for the extraction of metals since the 19th century but, recently, many interesting processes have been investigated using mixtures of molten salts and different cathodic materials. In several existing processes, the cation is simply discharged from melt but, in some cases, complications arise when the electrode potentials of the cations are relatively close. For example, the co-deposition of sodium with aluminium in the Hall-Heroult process is discussed in terms of electrode potentials of the components in the molten electrolyte. Similar considerations will also be given to the anodic reactions with respect to chlorine, oxygen, carbon dioxide or monoxide evolution from chloride-oxide melts. In some cases, the cathodic product interacts with the cathode to produce new and exciting products such as nanotubes from carbon or titanates and reduced titanium oxides from titanium dioxide. Depending on the electrode potentials, it is also possible to completely change the cathodic reaction from discharge of the cation in the salt to ionisation of the anions in the cathode. Examples are given of the reduction of metal oxides to produce metals, high technology alloys and nanomaterials and the cathodic refining of liquid metals.

"The Ross mine, a subsidiary operation of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, is near the north end of lot 1, con. II, Hislop tp., Ontario. The property comprises the north half of lot 1, con. II, and the south onethird of lot 1, con. III. It is readily reached by a good motor road from the village of Ramore, 7 1/2 miles to the southeast on the Ontario Northland railway. The mine is being developed to a depth of 1,500 feet, and the current daily production rate is approximately 300 tons. From the inception of operations in March 1935 until December 31, 1945, 692,000 tons of ore, with a total value of $5,762,685, was milled . The silver to gold ratio of 1.48 to 1 is unusually high for Ontario gold mines.TYPE OF 0REBODIES AND MINERALIZATIONThe orebodies consist of lens-shaped and pipe-like stringer lodes and tabular vein zones composed of parallel quartz stringers. The host rocks are steeply inclined eruptive breccias and tuffs, striking N.70°W., intruded by very small stocks of red syenite. The orebodies appear to be spatially related to an intricate system of fault planes. Hydrothermal alteration is widespread and is not zonally related to individual quartz stringers. The wall-rocks contain abundant fine-grained pyrite, but gold is confined to the quartz stringers.RELATIONSHIP TO REGIONAL STRUCTURELack of outcrops has prevented the detailed mapping of the Keewatin complex in the vicinity of the Ross mine with the degree of success that has been achieved in the Porcupine area.A northwesterly trending belt of slates and greywackes, bounded by faults, forms the central part of a broad anticlinal arch about 3 1/2 miles north of the Ross shaft. Lava flows forming the south flank of the structure face south toward the mine. If the sediments are to be tentatively correlated with the large areas of Keewatin slates and greywackes of the Porcupine area, it must be assumed that they are younger than the lava flows and that they have been down-faulted."

SILVER Bell is situated 35 airline miles northwest of Tucson, Ariz., in a small, rugged range rising above the extensive alluvial plains of this desert region. Its geographical relation to other porphyry copper deposits of the Southwest is shown on the inset map in the lower left corner of Fig. 1. The climate is semi-arid. Altitudes range within 2000 and 4000 ft. Opening of the Boot mine, later known as the Mammoth, in 1865 was the first event of note in the district's history. Oxidized copper ores containing minor silver-lead values were mined from replacement deposits in garnetized limestone and treated in local smelters. Copper production had approached 45 million pounds by 1909 when the disseminated copper possibilities in igneous rocks were recognized. Extensive churn drill exploration carried out during the next three years resulted in partial de- lineation of two copper sulphide deposits, the Oxide and El Tiro. Although the then submarginal tenor discouraged exploitation of these disseminated deposits, selective mining of orebodies in the sedimentary rocks continued intermittently until 1930, providing a production total of about 100 million pounds of copper.

Geometric programming is a mathematical optimization technique, first formulated by Zener [1], for dealing with certain types of functions which typically arise in engineering design problems. The theory provides algorithms for finding the optimal solution, existence theorems by which one can show that a particular design is possible or not; and characterization theorems that especially make possible to obtain the relationships among the optimal design parameters at optimum. It has been demonstrated [2] that this technique can be applied to several design problems in chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering. Design problems in mining, metallurgical and mineral engineering have many aspects similar to that of other engineering problems. Thus it is only natural to consider geometric programming as a potential tool for solving certain optimization problems in mineral industries.

This paper describes a technique to predict achievable head grades and likely variances from target grade for the Shovelanna Iron Ore Project, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The block model from which the production schedule is produced was created from a wide spaced drilling program and was classified as an Inferred Resource under the JORC Code. Ideally, production schedules and target grades would be determined using a combination of Proved and Probable reserves. However sometimes it is necessary to consider the requirements of potential off-take parties who have specific grade tolerances. A technique is needed to simulate mining sequences and grade variations early in the planning process, using an æexplorationÆ block model rather than the normal æminingÆ block model. Marketing contracts require examination whether the target grade {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3 can be kept constant, or must be revised during the life of the mine. A model (written in ExcelÖ using Visual Basic macros) develops a feasible, close to optimal, mine plan from block model data. Cut-off grades for minable ore are chosen. The model evaluates ore tonnage, grade and stripping ratio against depth. Outputs at this stage include plots of slices through the orebody, at nominated x, y and z coordinates, showing ore grade, waste, drill hole locations and topography. The model then searches for a feasible satisfactory mine plan. The initial grade target is the average for the identified ore blocks. The available block list (ABL) at any time is the set of ore blocks, any one of which can be mined without removing any other ore block. The entire initial ABL has an unacceptably large ætotal grade stressÆ, defined as [(Grade-Target)/Tolerance]2, summed over the four relevant minerals {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3}. The model trims the ABL, removing the block most harming the total stress. Trimming is repeated until the total grade stress reduces to an acceptable level. The trimmed ABL defines the first mine campaign. Removing the trimmed block set, a second ABL is exposed, which is again trimmed and mined. The process is automatic: a few seconds computation provides a complete mine plan. Re-running the model with adjusted grade limits quickly shows whether a uniform target can be achieved or whether the target must be modified during the mine life.

This paper presents the highlights of a general-purpose simulator for mineral processing plants that is being developed at the University of California, Berkeley. The state-of-the-art structured design methodogy based on a top-down design approach is being used to construct a modular and completely structured simulator such that it is independent of the unit operation models and routines. The simulator provides for two levels of operation allowing prebuilt or user-built simulation flowsheets depending upon the degree of computer knowledge expected of the user. The philosophy used in designing this simulator appears to be unique in the field of flowsheet simulation. The paper also includes a mini-example demonstrating the usage of the simulator.

A survey of the underground injection of steel processing waste pickle liquor (WPL) was made by Bureau of Mines engineers. Hydrochloric and sulfuric acids WPL are being injected into deep wells completed in the Cambrian age Mt. Simon Sandstone Formation in Illinois and Indiana. The Mt. Simon Formation ranges up to 1,800 feet in thickness. The average depth of WPL injection wells is 4,000 feet, and injection is mostly by gravity flow at rates as high as 4,000 barrels per day. The details of the design and operating history of a WPL well located near Gary, Ind., are discussed. Laboratory tests showed that the Mt. Simon Sandstone is sensitive to fresh water. The adsorption of iron and neutralization of acids by sandstone cores from deep wells and an outcrop were determined.

THE attempts of British investigators to arrive at definite knowledge concerning the nature of the nitrogenous constituents of coal have been mainly made through studies of the behavior of coal on carbonization and gasification. There have been carried out numerous determinations of ,the distribution of nitrogen in the products of carbonization under laboratory and large-scale conditions; and by a careful consideration of the extent to which nitrogen is liberated, say as ammonia, at different temperatures and under different conditions of operation as regards atmosphere, it has been possible to form some general notions as to the nature of the nitrogenous compounds present in the coal, and at the same time to arrive at clearer ideas as to what are the important operative factors in determining the ammonia yield under working conditions. This work has been spread over many years and is summarized below. The difficulties of connecting the results in such a way as to allow of the nitrogenous constituents of the coal being described in terms of specific organic structure are great. They arise, for example, in the carbonization process, because the phenomena of decomposition observed at any one temperature can only refer to compounds decomposing at that temperature, each of them with a previous history of chemical transformations occurring at lower temperatures. To put it in another way, the compounds occurring in the coke at any stage are not in the least likely to be those present in the original coal. The same difficulty, in a milder form, occurs when the method of differential solution is attempted. There is always the preliminary question, almost impossible to answer, as to how far the separation by the use of the solvent has involved some form of decomposition of the original compounds. In the following summary, an attempt has been made to bring together results obtained by British workers.

Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced ; although it is well -known that there are large deposits of low - grade ore in the United States , the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore is depleted through inability to obtain adequate supplies from foreign sources . Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot - plant investigations designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines . This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program . The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series , Report of Investigations 3606 , Manganese Investigations 1. Concentration of Manganese Ores from the Drum Mountain District, Utah, by S. R. Zimmerley, J. D. Vincent , and C. H. Schack . Other reports will be published as the work progresses .

For conventional applications, there is limited demand for rare earth elements as well as yttrium and scandium. But the emergence of new high technology applications such as supermagnets, lasers, and superconductors should result in significant demand for some of these elements. This article examines the anticipated applications and demands for rare earth elements over the next decade. It also looks at the implications on the use of available resources. In the context of a growing demand, process methods are reviewed for the recovery of rare earth elements from conventional and unconventional resources. And the article also discusses the challenges facing the mining industry in meeting this opportunity. Reserves and reserve base The rare earths (RE) are a homogeneous group of metallic elements occupying the area from lanthanum to lutetium in group IIIB of the periodic table. Yttrium and scandium are also included with the rare earths because of their chemical similarities and common existence in nature. These 17 elements and their atomic numbers are shown in Table 1. The rare earths are widely distributed in low concentrations throughout the earth's crust (Hedrick, 1985). They occur in many rock formations including basalts, granites, shales, and silicate rocks at concentrations of 10 - 300 ug/g. They also occur in more than 160 discrete minerals. Most of these are rare, but may contain as much as 60% rare earth oxides (REO). More than 95% of the REO occurs in three minerals: monazite and bastnasite for the light rare earths and xenotime for yttrium and the heavy rare earths. Apatite and multiple-oxide minerals, such as euxenite and loparite, are also commercial sources of the lanthanides and yt-trium. Rare earths do not occur in nature in the elemental state. And, except for scandium, they do not occur in minerals as individual compounds. Bastnasite and monazite are the two major minerals used commercially to supply most of the rare earths (Hedrick, 1985). Bastnasite is a key raw material source for the cerium subgroup elements. The largest known bastnasite deposit occurs with iron ore minerals in China. The second largest deposit is situated in California. Typical rock analyses of the fluorocarbonate mineral bastnasite deposit in California show about 15% bastnasite. The REO content of that is about 50%. There is no simple answer to the question, "What is the meaning of life?" The expressions of life are so multiple that life has different meanings for different spheres of thought, such as art, science, or philosophy; and it conveys a different significance to different persons, according to their individual development and interests. Life is complex from a philosophical point of view. The meaning of life is superficially positive and unmistakable only when approached from a mechanistic view- point; namely, that of biology or biochemistry, since these deal with the physicochemical basis of life processes. However, such a purely mechanistic or biochemical approach to the significance of life and the interpretation of man's behavior on the basis of purely physical laws is certain to run into trouble. Similarly, a concentration of effort upon materialistic advances in world progress is extremely dangerous. The possible consequences of splitting the atom, development of guided missiles, and possible bacterial warfare are timely examples. Man becomes more self-reliant as he extends his scientific and technologic discoveries and learns how to shape natural conditions to his own desires. When man will be able to travel to other planets in atomically propelled space ships and destroy whole worlds by pushing a button, a possibility which now seems to be within the realm of the predictable future, he will need the strong-

ALTHOUGH valuable information has been pub-lished on the important problems of slag losses with which every copper metallurgist has to contend, a great deal of money is still being wasted in copper smelters all over the world, through metal being irretrievably lost in reverberatory slags. When smelting a relatively low-grade pyritic concentrate together with a proportion of direct-smelting oxi- dized ore, as is done in Oroya, slag volumes are of necessity high, and even a relatively clean slag, say of 0.5 pct Cu, means a loss of almost 4 pct of all the copper charged, or over $1,000,000 annually at present output and prices. While it is known that such losses can often be reduced by allowing the slag time to settle, with or without addition of a reducing agent such as coal or pyrite, the facilities for such treatment are not always available in a plant of old design working to capacity under severe space limitations. Nor is it easy under such conditions to run large scale tests which may endanger the smooth flow of production for considerable periods without yielding

A comprehensive approach to the development and organization of an expert system that is designed to assist electricians in diagnosing electrical faults m mining machinery is discussed. The system includes diagnostic, reference, and tutorial programs. The diagnostic portion of the system is based on a causal-reasoning approach which is used to establish a hierarchy of symptoms and the subsequent production rules for identifying component-level failures m the motor-control circuit of a shuttle car. With this approach, conclusions are developed directly from knowledge of the circuit and its behavior (in both working and failure modes) based on first principles, rather than the heuristics of a domain expert. The symptoms and their hierarchical structure an: formulated by creating "what-if" scenarios and performing a qualitative circuit analysis for each fault Techniques for incorporating interactive graphical displays of the circuit schematic into the diagnostic portion of the system are also presented. Supportive computer programs that provide' reference material and tutorials on the circuit are also described.

THE CHAIRMAN (EDWIN LUDLOW, Lansford; Pa.).-Mr. Wang's paper reminded me that some years ago I was asked if I would not go into the Tien Tsin district and take charge of Americanizing a Chinese mine. They said the trouble was that, while wages were only 9 c. a day, the coke cost $2 a ton delivered to the cars. Reading Mr: Wang's paper would indicate the need of a little Americanization in the Manchurian field. Wages are only 40 c: a day, yet the cost is $3.60 a ton. An efficiency engineer would have an excellent opportunity in that field. T. T. READ, New York, N. Y.-It is always true that low-priced labor is inefficient, wherever we find it; for example, in Japan, where wages are low, but not so low as in Manchuria, working costs are not relatively much lower than ours.
