The use of various electrochemical techniques to study mechanisms of sulfide mineral- flotation reagent interactions is briefly reviewed in this paper. Prior to such studies it is desirable to thermodynamically determine solution conditions favorable for formation of hydrophobic species deemed to be responsible for flotation. The thermodynamic equilibrium involving both the stable and metastable species can be conveniently represented by an Eh-pH diagram. Thermodynamics can also be used to predict conditions where a mineral might not float if depressants are present. Under favorable conditions of flotation there is competition between reactions leading to formation of hydrophobic species with reactions that lead to formation of hydrophilic species. Due to the sluggish nature of the reactions involving sulfide minerals, a knowledge of the kinetic behavior of the system is necessary. Electrochemical methods of investigation are wed in laboratory studies to (1) control the state of oxidation, (2) determine the type and amount of electroactive species present at the mineral surface, and (3) study kinetics of electrode processes. By combining electrochemical techniques and wetting measurements the identification of hydrophobic species that might be present at the mineral surface could be achieved. Both contact angle measurements at mineral electrodes or flotation in a cell equipped with a particulate bed electrode can be used for the wetting measurements.

Any type of agitation within a confined vessel is primarily concerned with two parameters: a level of agitation describing the homogeneity of the constituents (whether it be suspension or mixing), and the energy efficiency with which this level of agitation is accomplished. The following is an attempt to present a solution to the problem of adequately defining and optimizing these properties. A discussion is included of the application of good design practices to the determination of a mechanically efficient shape to the blade elements of the propeller. These practices, excluding several appropriate modifications, have been known, but not well understood, in aircraft fluid mechanics for a number of years. Having optimized the direct impartation of energy to the medium being agitated, attention is turned to one of the more perplexing phenomena of multi-phase systems - definition and prediction of agitation levels. The result of recent study and testing is a method of scaling that the authors believe provides a lucid understanding of governing physical parameters within the agitator itself, allowing one to scale up and down with confidence.

"The grit blasting is a low-cost technique successfully used to enhance mechanical fixation of the implants through increasing their roughness. As a result of the severe plastic surface deformation, it produces subsurface effects such as grain refinement, hardening and compressive residual stresses which are generally evaluated with destructive techniques. In this research work, non-contacting and contacting thermoelectric power measurements are performed in blasted 316L VM and Ti-6AI-4V specimens using Ah03 and Zr02 particles which yield a coarse and a fine rough surface, respectively. This study correlates the microstructural changes induced by the grit blasting treatment and the limitations and advantages of each of the nondestructive thermoelectric techniques based on the Seebeck effect used to evaluate these biomaterials.IntroductionIt is well known that surface properties play an important role in metallic materials used in bio-medical applications. Since the biological response is correlated directly with surface properties it is comprehensible the intense activity in superficial modification by physics or chemistry methods in this field. Grit blasting, one of the most popular surface modification of metallic biomaterials, enhances the mechanical fixation of the implant through the increase in roughness [1-3]. Roughening is developed by bombarding the surface with a high-velocity jet of ceramic particles, being the final roughness a function of the processing parameters (pressure, distance, time, ... ) and blasting particles (nature, shape, size). As the plastically deformed surface layer tries to expand relatively to the intact interior of the specimen, residual compressive stress gradients develops perpendicular to the surface at shallow depths with a maximum value at a depth in the range of 5 to 60 µm. This surface treatment also may cause subtle variations in the subsurface material properties, such as increased hardness and grain size refinement, which are consequences of the significant plastic deformation through cold work. Blasted affected zones may extend to a depth of up to about 200 µm. The subsurface hardening and the near-surface compressive stress gradient playa beneficial role by retarding fatigue crack nucleation and further growth, ultimately extending the fatigue life of the metallic part [4]. In this work, two non-destructive thermoelectric techniques (NDTT), the non-contacting and contacting thermoelectric power measurements were used to analyze the subsurface induced changes on blasted Ti-6AI-4V and 316L VM specimens using Al2O3 and Zr02 particles. Detailed information on the microstructural induced effects and subsurface mechanical properties were published elsewhere [5-8]. Here the nondestructive evaluation of the involved microstructural changes is used to assess the global subsurface damage. Advantages of using nondestructive techniques during manufacturing are envisaged."

FOR the past four years the management of the Black Hawk Consolidated Mines plant at Mogollon has conscientiously kept accurate records pertaining to cost of operation and the performance of certain equipment. These records have been valuable in coordinating the work in the mine, mill and power plant. Also, as to quantity and kind of equipment and supplies most suitable from the standpoint of economy and dependable operation, they have served as a guide. Through comparison with records at other mines, where the same things are being done in a different way, they have pointed out mistakes to be avoided. No outstanding accomplishments, either in costs or performances, are revealed; in fact, some of the results are perhaps quite inferior to those obtained at similar plants, but it is with the thought that more records should be published for the benefit of the mining profession that the author presents these data. To other operators and to mining engineers who are called upon to make estimates for prospective operations, the information herein should be helpful. GENERAL CONDITIONS Mogollon is in the southern part of Catron County, southwestern New Mexico. It lies near the western border of the Mogollon Range, 14 miles east of the Arizona line. Silver City, 80 miles to the southeast, is the nearest railroad point. The connecting road, over which supplies are hauled into camp by trucks, is an improved highway for about 50 miles; the remainder consists of graveled roads and unimproved steep mountain grades. One general supply truck and one tank truck make daily round trips. Hauling of supplies to the mine has cost at the rate of $0.08 per ton-mile; or, on the basis of ore production, $0.30 per ton mined. Lumber, hauled in from local mills, has cost an average of $30.00 per 1000 board feet, $8.50 of which has been for hauling. The annual consumption averages 108,000 board feet. Lime, hauled from a plant in Arizona, is about the only other item not brought out from Silver City. Fuel oil for the generation of power is the item of greatest hauling expense, the f.o.b. Mogollon cost of approximately $0.06 per gal. being nearly twice the f.o.b. refinery price. Water for power plant, mill and camp use flows to camp storage tanks through a 4-in. pipe line from a spring and intake 3 miles up Silver Creek Canyon. A few times, particularly in the month of June, mill operations have been suspended for two or three days because of water shortage. "The number of hybrid vehicles is increasing and this is causeing an increase in waste nickelmetal hydride batteries. The cathode activating agent of batteries is made of nickel hydroxide and the anode activating agent is an alloy of nickel and rare earth elements. Conventional rotary kiln methods cannot recover the rare earth elements, and hydrometallurgical treatment of crushed product consumes large volumes of agent. The physical separation of the anode alloy from the cathode hydroxide would make it possible to reuse the alloy. The authors have reported separation of anode and cathode components in the large size fractions using a newly developed dry magnetic separation method. Wet magnetic separation has been applied to the powder fraction and about 90% anode purity was achieved. This paper reviews experimental results from previous publications and proposes an integrated treatment process for crushed nickel-metal hydride batteries.IntroductionEnvironmentally-conscious clean energy vehicles have attracted much attention in developed countries and particularly hybrid vehicles are increasingly mass-produced as low emission vehicles. Hybrid vehicles have both a gasoline engine and an electric motor to save on gasoline usage and a nickel-metal hydride battery is used to store electric energy. The battery contains Nihydroxide and Co as the cathode activating agent and an alloy of Ni and mischmetal (mM), a rare-earth element mixture consisting of La, Ce, and Nd, as the anode hydrogen adsorption component. In conventional recycling, the Ni and Fe are recovered with a rotary kiln-electric melting process and the Co and mM go to the slag component [1] and hydrometallurgical treatment of crushed product consumes large volumes of agent. Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation have proposed a low energy and low cost recycling treatment process combining the physical and chemical treatments and the authors are investigating the physical treatment process."

Existing production facilities are constantly looking at ways to increase capacity. Many recent solutions have focused on the implementation of capital and infrastructure projects. It is accepted that capital expansions are frequently necessary for production gains; however, in many cases existing assets have the potential to deliver substantially better throughput than they are currently achieving. By focusing on automation of production control systems, production reporting and business processes substantial gains can be achieved utilising existing assets. This potential can be realised quickly and has been proven across several sites and industries. In the Pilbara region of Western Australia throughput gains of between two per cent and 25 per cent (translating to millions of tonnes per annum) have been achieved from existing assets using the methodologies discussed. The improvement process involves evaluating the entire production chain from the time the ore arrives at the plant to the time it is dispatched. A technical evaluation of the performance of the control system and plant automation interfaces to upstream and downstream processes is conducted. The relationship of these processes to the business systems and the human interface to the systems is reviewed to ensure a complete picture of the system is understood. Technical evaluation targets include: individual equipment operation, the engineering level of control systems, feed controls, etc; managing recirculating loads, surge capacities, dynamic inventories as well as management of in-feed systems and integration into yard and out-feed systems; and communication flow between control and other systems, data alignment between rail and shipping schedules, yard systems, sales systems and maintenance systems including such fundamentals as truck dispatch links to plant control. In parallel with the technical evaluation, business system evaluation takes place, including analysis of the operational systems, methods and personnel.

To enhance safety and efficiency when moving large mining equipment under energized trolley lines, and to assist in compliance with Section 75.1003.2, 30 CFR. Approach A system was designed, using established technology, that permits a remotely located circuit breaker to be controlled from the cab of a mine locomotive moving large mining equipment under energized trolley lines. This control consists of setting the desired trip current, automatic or manual tripping, resetting, and voice communications between the locomotive and a remote Circuit breaker location. How It Works According to 75.1003.2, 30 CFR, whenever a piece of off-track equipment (such as a longwall chock or a continuous miner) is moved by rail under energized trolley or feeder lines, power for the locomotive that is moving the equipment must come from only one' circuit breaker. This circuit breaker must be adjusted to permit no more than one-half its rated short-circuit current to flow. The intent is to lessen the danger if an accident should occur, and if the equipment contacts the trolley line. Even so, the danger is great. This half setting can still represent many hundreds or even thousands of amperes, enough to endanger personnel, the equipment, or the mine. The Remote Control System reduces this danger substantially by giving the personnel associated with the move total control over the associated circuit breaker. The system as designed, is intended to be used with portable circuit breakers that are pulled on a small flat car by a mine jeep, and either precede or follow the equipment, depending on the direction of the power. This portable circuit breaker is equipped with a commercially available solid state overcurrent relay and associated shunt. This circuit breaker is connected via heavy duty clamps around an open trolley line tie breaker such that the current through the shunt is also the current in the trolley line. A receiver, interfaced with the overcurrent relay and shunt, completes the remote system.

We have developed a new shotcreting which is suitable for the primary support of TBM tun- nelling in soft rock. This spraying compound is made from cement, a special accelerating agent and glass fiber. It can be sprayed on to a rock surface using a specially designed gun similar to paint-spraying equipment. Some of the characteristics of this method are as follows: 1) If spraying is done keeping the distance between the gun and the rock surface be- tween 0.2 and 3.0 m, the rebound losses are small and there is little dust. 2) This method can be used on excavated rock surfaces under inflowing water conditions of up to 10 i/m2òmin. 3) After 1 day the compressive strengthes of the sprayed material is greater than 250 kgf/cm2.

Last spring the suggestion was made that the national engineering societies offer to assist the War Department in the formation of an engineer reserve in the United States Army. The suggestion was brought to the attention of some of the officers of the Army, who commended it and confirmed the belief that the need of such a reserve was a real one; that the European war had distinctly shown that engineers in time of war are required on a scale never before realized and of great varieties of experience. In our own army no adequate provision is made for great numbers of engineers, for although the corps of engineers is composed of men of the very highest professional proficiency in certain lines it is greatly short of the numerical strength that would be immediately required. Acting on this suggestion, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Institute of Consulting Engineers appointed committees authorized and directed to take such steps as might be advisable to urge the organization of such a reserve corps as part of the. regular army, and so assist in putting the United States in a better condition of prepared-

This paper addresses detailed models of the temporal pattern of material flows produced by longwall mining units and procedures for inferring the parameters of these models from field data. First, a model is established that predicts material flows referred to shearer position and cutting element. This model is comprised of trend and fluctuation components. The trend component, which is invariant between repetitions of the cut cycle, accounts for deterministic effects on the flow pattern, such as web depth variation as a function of the cutting operation, systematic tendencies for seam height and cutting speed variations along the face, changes in the relative velocity between the shearer and face conveyor, etc. The fluctuation component models random effects on material flow and employs time series approaches. Subsequently, a method is given for converting the positionally-referenced flows to temporally-referenced flows. The model serves as a basis for generating detailed, accurate computer simulations of material flows from longwall units. As such, it provides a more rigorous foundation for analysis of cutting procedures and outby materials handling systems in longwall mines.

An approach to the design of a tailings disposal system is presented using an example from a platinum project on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex as a base case. The design is driven by two inputs: namely, maximizing water recovery and minimizing power cost, expressed as cubic metres and kilowatts per ton of solids deposited on the tailings storage facility respectively. The approach considers low-, medium-, and high-density platinum tailings and uses material-specific aspects such as thickening and rheology to determine the most economical option. An analysis based on direct capital and operating cost (water and electricity) shows that the medium-density scenario results in the lowest total cost per ton of tailings deposited, even though this system results in the highest electricity consumption per ton of tailings deposited. As the cost of water and electricity is likely to increase in the future, the higher-density tailings disposal options become more economical, with the paste option the preferred option.

Mine opening stability was investigated by loading model openings to failure. Eight-inch plaster blocks were cast with small uniform section openings passing through the centers. After curing, the models were jacketed and loaded hydrostatically in a closed vessel. Opening size, shape, and orientation were varied to determine how these factors influence opening stability. THE investigation described in this paper is a continuation of a project begun in 1946 by Bernard York and W. E. Bush. .The experimental method used in the investigation involves the hydrostatic loading of a model mine opening to failure. Most investigators agree that this loading closely approaches actual conditions in very deep mines. The conditions are further idealized by using an essentially isotropic model material. The experiments consist of casting 8-in. plaster cubes, or 8-in. diam cylinders 8-in. long, having a relatively small uniform section hole passing through their centers. After thorough drying, the models are jacketed in a flexible plastic bag and loaded hydrostatically with water in a closed vessel. At about 300 to 500 lb per sq in. pressure the central opening fails. The fracture pattern resulting from opening failure is studied in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the opening. This paper describes the application of a throughput-optimization strategy to a run-of-mine (ROM) mining circuit that is controlled by a multivariable controller. The objective of the optimization strategy is to maximize the ROM throughput at a specific product size. Results from long-term tests, which indicated how 'steady-state' optimization can be achieved, were used for the throughput optimization. This strategy increased the ROM throughput by 11,4 per cent. A mathematical relationship relating residue to grind can be used to calculate the economic benefits of stabilizing control. It was estimated that the throughput optimizer could result in an increase in gold production worth Rl,4 million per annum when waste rock is treated, and that stabilizing control could increase the treatment plants annual revenue by R150 000. If the extra milling capacity brought about by the optimizer is interpreted as a capital cost saving of 10 per cent on the price of a new mil, then a capital cost saving of RI million could result.

An inherent aspect of longwall mining is moving the equipment from a mined-out panel to a newly developed panel. Moving times may be reduced by detailed preplanning. A very useful tool for planning is MS Project. Using MS Project, one can efficiently plan, manage and coordinate a project from conception to conclusion. The critical path analysis identifies potential critical activities which may cause excessive time delays. Changes to the tasks on the critical path can have significant impact 0.n the completion of a project. Assigning additional resources to these tasks (either moving labor from other tasks to critical tasks or providing labor overtime work) may reduce the move time. Simultaneous activities are the candidates for moving the labor from an activity to another. Each time a change is made, the critical path should be recalculated. MS Project quickly recalculates schedules and lets you see how changes in one part of the project will affect the overall plan. In this fashion it is possible to minimize the longwall move time.

Before describing the electrostatic processing of feldspar, it might be well to review some of the basic definitions and terminology of feldspars. The feldspar minerals constitute a group of alumino-silicates of potassium, sodium, and calcium. Barium feldspar sometimes occurs naturally but is very rare. Hardness varies between 6 and 6.5 and specific gravity between 2.5 and 2.8. Color is generally white or pale shades of red, yellow, or green. The approximate chemical composition of the principal feldspars is given in Table I. The albite (sodium aluminum silicate) and an orthite (calcium aluminum silicate) feldspars are the end members of a series called plagioclase. These two molecules form a complete solid solution series ranging from pure soda feldspar at one end to the pure lime feldspar at the other end. Intermediate solid solutions are known as oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytoconite. The general structure throughout this series is the same. Sodium and calcium may replace each other and silicon and aluminum may replace each other in the structure.

Manufacturers of filtering, thickening or clarifying equipment, have been active in developing machines to meet increasingly rigid operator requirements, and the innovations resulting from this effort are moving into commercial applications. In general, the results of these applications are reported to be good. Little has been reported on progress in theory. The growing insistence on the part of pollution control agencies that waste water discharged into streams contain less and less suspended solids is being felt by a broad cross section of industry. A new clarifier, based on the often rediscovered fact that suspended solids settle more rapidly in inclined channels, is being marketed by Neptune MicroFLOC of Corvallis, Ore. This unit employs modules of inclined tubes, mounted in the upper zone of the clarifier, which carry the water flow. These were developed for light solids, such as those encountered in domestic water treatment and in paper mill waste water. In these applications, flow rates up to about three times those permissible in conventional clarifiers are reported to give comparable overflow turbidity. By combining these units with mixed media filters, high clarity may be obtained with minimum capital. Use of such units in the metallurgical industry, particularly where water reuse or effluent quality is important, should grow.

Lewatit TP207, a chelating resin with iminodiacetate functional group, is used for the purification of cobalt hexammine chloride solution for divalent cationic impurities (US Patent No. 5,154,757). The method is employed at commercial scale in OSRAM SYLVANIA Inc. cobalt chemical production since 1992. It is observed that after long use in the purification of cobalt hexammine chloride solution, a large number of resin beads tum black from their original beige color. The purpose of this paper was to characterize these black-colored resin beads for their ion exchange behavior. The resin sample used in this work was an exhausted production TP207 resin containing large number of black-colored beads. The results indicated that blackened resin beads can be regenerated to almost full capacity and' their ion exchange behavior for the purification of cobalt hexammine chloride solution was comparable to the new resin.

Vacuum flotation tests carried out according to the method of Schuhmann and Prakash1 have shown that the acid limiting edge of the flotation area for a Brazilian hematite, in the presence of dodecylamine, is a straight line of slope approximately unity. The flotation tests and the structure, surface ionization, and electrokinetic properties of this hematite have been fully discussed elsewhere. 2 The numbers of adsorbed H+, and OH- ions and collector molecules have been determined in the range of critical conditions defining the acid limit of the flotation area. The total amine adsorption is shown in Fig. 1 as a set of contours superimposed on the straight part of the flotation area. These were determined by spectro-photometric estimation of the complex formed between residual amine and the anionic dye Orange II.3 The ionic strength of the solutions was kept constant and at a value in sufficient excess of the amine concentration to ensure that the diffuse part of the double layer was populated predominantly by indifferent ions. Adsorption of H+ and OH- in the absence of amine was found by potentiometric acid-base titration in the presence of hematite.4 The form of the adsorption-titration curves suggested that the hematite surface behaves in an amphoteric manner, and that positively charged sites arise through loss of a hydroxyl ion, and negatively charged sites by loss of a hydrogen ion. On this basis, curves 8 and 9, shown in Fig. 2, were calculated from the titration curves. These show the variation of the numbers of positive (s +) and negative (s—) sites with pH. To distinguish between ionic and other modes of adsorption, zeta-potential determinations have also been made using the streaming potential technique. The influence of amine on the zeta-potential of the mineral over a wide pH range is shown in Fig. 3. The change in charge ?s, due to adsorption of amine ions in the Stern layer, was calculated by applying the Gouy-Chapman theory, as modified by Stem, to the results shown in Fig. 3. The validity of this treatment has been shown by Ottewill and Jaycock.5 The three full lines, Nos. (1) through (3), included in Fig. 2 show the relationship between ?s and pH at three amine concentrations. The general conclusion from the zeta-potential curves is that adsorption of amine causes a reduction in the negative charge on the surface.
