Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) has recently undertaken an exercise to improve orebody basal definition. Older mineralisation bases (pre-2005) were highly erratic using old protocol reverse circulation (RC) (also known as Air Core) drilling and interpretation. The erratic nature of this estimation tool, resulted in impractical modelling towards the end of mineralisation (EOM), difficult mine design and unrealistic reconciliation. New protocol drilling, which includes high definition SONIC drilling data, has provided more data to be available for more accurate interpretation. Recent advances in drilling methodology has allowed for better penetration depths for SONIC drilling, which was previously restricted to approximately 80 m (pre-2005). This improved data set allows more emphasis on geological interpretation with factors such as lithology, slime content, and mineral species distribution. These factors when in unique combination enable more accurate and realistic EOM data points. These points are modelled into surfaces using conditional simulation techniques and result in a vastly smoother surface and consequently, a more representative resource.

In rock- or ore-crushing tests all data, in order to be valuable for study and comparison, should be obtained and tabulated under conditions as uniform as possible. The results of many such tests have no value for comparison, because of incomplete data and the lack of uniform conditiops, screens and scale of sizing, etc. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a form of standard specifications which may be developed by the Milling Committee and approved by the A. I. M. E. for rock-crushing tests. It is not intended to discuss any theories of rock crushing. Reports of rock-crushing tests should include the following details: 1. Description of the machine employed (jaw or gyratory crushers, rolls, stamps,tube mills, Chilean mills, etc.), 2. Method and material (timber, concrete, etc.) of foundation. Much power is dissipated in the vibration of poor foundations. 3. Locality from which the rock or ore was obtaincd, and geological, mineralogical, and physical characters of the material. 4. The power consumption of the machine running with no load and with full load, the unit of power being 1 hp. per 24 hr, 5. The capacity of the machine in tons (of 2000 Ib.) per 24 hr. 6. The duty in tons per horsepower-day. 7. The screen analysis of feed and product by the proposed A. I. M. E. standard screen scale. On the foregoing statement, the following remarlrs are offered. Toughness of Rock Table P shows the relative crushing duty of the same machine on three different characters of rock, all other crushing conditions being the same. This table indicates that the specific resistance of the rock to crushing, may affect the crushing duty of a unit of power as much as 300 per cent. Perhaps this quality may be called toughness. Line-of-sight radio control has received widespread acceptance for use in many mining methods because today’s technology offers improved economics and personnel safety. Significant advances in higher autonomy for mining machines are not currently seeing widespread use even though they offer great future potential. With autonomous capabilities being a longer-term goal, a logical sequence of advances based on TeleRemote control is proposed. Under Tele - Remote control, the operator is in direct control of the machine at all times. Three levels of Tele - Remote control systems are presented including line-of-sight, extended line-of-sight, and full load-haul-dump applications. Distributed control and sensing subsystems arranged in a vehicle control area network support incremental system expansion through the three levels of TeleRemote control and prepare the machine for integration of higher levels of automation as mature technology becomes available. This approach allows full exploitation of today’s mining automation technology with a flexible future growth path.

Shale roof deterioration in coal mines. caused by ventilation air humidity fluctuations, is a common ground control problem. Shale roof deterioration often results in increased accidents, decreased production, inadequate ventilation, and increasing operating costs in maintaining haulage roads and airways. The results of Bureau of Mines research indicate that air tempering entries are an effective method of controlling deterioration prone shales. Some of the conclusions and recommendations drawn from Bureau research include (1) moisture sensitive shales will react adversely to moisture gains and losses, (2) the majority effect of specific humidity fluctuations can be concentrated in and absorbed by tempering entries, (3) tempering entry panels should be located as near to the main intake as possible, (4) tempering panels should be designed for a conservative recovery and provide a minimum of 20-to 30-min air residence time, (5) ventilation and escapeway requirements must be considered early in panel design, and (6) an efficient support and sealant plan can increase the life expectancy of a tempering panel.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous .sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

A significantly different method of evaluating mine ground system safety is investigated. The method measures touch and step potentials around ground beds and grounded equipment resulting from a series of extremely small simulated faults. The values are then scaled for a full-scale fault. The method should be particularly useful for large ground beds and under conditions where the ground bed cannot be isolated from the rest of the ground system in order to make traditional ground bed resistance measurements. Instrumentation for making the alternative measurements is evaluated under rigorous field conditions. A step-by-step procedure is proposed for evaluating a surface mine ground system. This procedure was subject to several field tests at eastern metal/non-metal mines. The final evaluation procedure is written as a stand-alone document for use by MSHA inspectors and mine operating personnel, and is included as an appendix to the report. The authors conclude that the procedure is effective in evaluating ground system safety and recommend that it be further evaluated in the field.

"In the application of the BIOX® technology, high tailings grade (2-16 g/t) may be generated with a decrease in overall gold recovery, which sometimes make it economically unattractive. This paper investigated the causes of the high tailings grade by using samples from the Bogoso BIOX plant. Partial chemical analysis, diagnostic tests and cyanidation optimisation studies were conducted to invoke understanding into the high tailings grades. Diagnostic study on the tailings showed 48.34% of gold in carbonaceous matter, 17.12% in quartz, 13.40% as liberated gold, 11.51% imbedded in sulphides and the remaining 9.65% in carbonates. Optimum cyanidation recovery of 90.4% was established for the BIOX concentrate at 7 kg/t NaCN, 40-50 g/L activated carbon and residence time of 40 hours. The recovery was sensitive to carbon and cyanide concentrations but additional cyanide was not economical. High preg-robbing indices of 72.7% and 64.4% were recorded for the BIOX product and the flotation concentrate respectively. This confirms the inability of the BIOX process to deactivate carbonaceous matter, which remains a serious precursor for low overall gold recoveries and high CIL tailings. INTRODUCTION Gold ores may be broadly classified as refractory and non-refractory. Non-refractory ores are easy to treat but refractory materials require complicated flowsheets for metal extraction (Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001; Marsden and House, 2006). As near surface non-refractory gold deposits are getting depleted, the increasing price of gold and increasing demand for gold, have encouraged many gold producing companies to treat refractory ores for gold recovery. The refractory behaviour of these ores may be due to the presence of sulphides, tellurides, cyanicides and/or carbonaceous matter. Refractory ores do not respond well to conventional cyanidation as the gold is either occluded by or in solid solution in sulphides, or is in association with cyanicides (Marsden and House, 2006). Further, carbonaceous matter preg-robs gold during leaching (Osseo-Asare et al, 1984; Hausen and Bucknam, 1985; Schmitz et al, 2001). The two major causes of refractoriness are the presence of sulphides and carbonaceous matter, and these render the ore double refractory (Nyavor and Egiebor, 1992). Oxidative pre-treatment processes such as high pressure leaching/oxidation; biological oxidation, ultra-fine grinding and roasting are required to render refractory ores amenable to conventional cyanidation (Marsden and House, 2006). Biological oxidation, however, has become the preferred pre-treatment route because it is more environmentally friendly and convenient even where only partial oxidation is required. Comparative tests have demonstrated that bioleaching can achieve the same or better results than roasting or pressure leaching in terms of gold recovery (Yannopoulos, 1991; Brierley, 1997). Further, biological treatment processes are more cost-effective, environmentally friendly and safer."

"The Sierra Gorda SCM sulfide ore processing plant began commissioning in the third quarter of 2014. Located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, the project is an open pit mine and Copper-Molybdenum processing plant is one of the most highly-instrumented operations in the world. It is the first hard rock operation in Chile and the second in South America to utilize HPGR technology. It is a significant Molybdenum resource especially in the first five years and the Molybdenum separation plant is complex. Designed to process up to 60 million lbs. of fine Molybdenum per year, it uses the latest technology and equipment to ensure superior recovery and product quality. It also has gas handling and alarm systems to fulfil the Company’s vision of “Zero Harm”. This paper discusses the overall operation and issues relating to the concentrator start-up. These include a review of the mineral processing design, the unified process control center and management information systems, and the correlation of geological and metallurgical performance data (mine-to-mill) for use in anticipating and preparing for treatment of diverse ore deliveries. INTRODUCTION Sierra Gorda SCM is a joint venture partnership with KGHM International (owned by KGHM SA, Poland), Sumitomo Metal Mining, and Sumitomo Corporation (Japan) operating in northern Chile. The Sierra Gorda open pit mine and Copper-Molybdenum processing plant will become one of the largest mines in the world. The need for optimum production efficiency and sustainability has driven the creation of the most modern, well-instrumented mine in Chile. This paper contains a general review of the project including geology and history. This was a very fast-track project going from greenfield site acquisition to mill start-up in 10 years. Highly-experienced and motivated engineers and technical staff have overcome many significant challenges resulting in a rapid ramp-up of production capacity. A potential expansion to double the production rate in the fourth year of operation has also been intensely studied. The Sierra Gorda property is located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, in the District of Sierra Gorda, Region II of Antofagasta, Chile (see Figure 1). There is almost no precipitation in this area. The mine site is generally flat with some rolling hills. The project is located about 5 km from the village of Sierra Gorda at an elevation of approximately 1,700 m above mean sea level. The village is near a highway and railway line. The city of Calama, home of the famous Chuquicamata Mine, is located about 60 km northeast of Sierra Gorda. In addition, the SG mine is in the midst of numerous other mines including Spence, Esperanza, Mantos Blancos, El Tesoro, Lomas Bayas, Gabriela Mistral, El Abra, Radomiro Tomic, and Escondida, to name a few."

OUR combined economic activities have as their goal the maximum of individual well-being and national security. In this age of intense international competition the two objectives are closely related. For many decades, the maximum of well-being and ability to maintain national security have moved generally upward. The best single measure-perhaps the only adequate measure -of the level of the rising goal is the per capita real national income (national income corrected for price changes). For centuries before the industrial revolution the income of the world's population changed little from generation to generation. In our country prior to 1800 the growth of national income was hardly measurable from decade to decade. Since 1850, perhaps since the "industrial revolution," the growth of per capita real income has been increasing geometrically. It was Harold McMillan, Prime Minister of England 30 years ago, who used the phrase "The Wind of Change" to describe political events in Africa in his day. So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives. Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring? It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.

"High pressure vapor/solid reactions offer an opportunity for novel synthesis and processing of thin film materials and structures for electronic, optical, and magnetic applications. In this paper we review the use of two high pressure techniques that operate from 25 to 1000 atm (2.5 to 100 MPa) to fabricate thin film oxide structures from Si1-xGex deposited on Si wafers. High pressure synthesis enables temperature-independent control of reaction rates in the oxidation of this multicomponent semiconductor system and hence offers the opportunity to form thennodynamically metastable Si1-xGex<h from the alloy. The thermodynamics of the Si-Ge-0 system are reviewed and a method is described that utilizes selective chemical reduction (via H2 gas) of Si1-xGcx<h to form Ge precipitates in an SiO2 matrix. IntroductionAlloys of Si1-xGex grown epitaxially on Si substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CYD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) have been used to create high performance microelectronic devices1. These devices show improved performance over conventional Si technology because they exploit the Si/Si 1-xGex band-gap discontinuity and take advantage of higher hole mobilities in the Ge containing alloys. While a range of devices based on heteroepitaxial systems have been demonstrated, the Si1_xGex alloys are of particular interest because they are most closely compatable with standard Si device processing. One disadvantage of Si-based materials systems is that they are not typically useful emitters of light. This is important since the use of light (rather than electrons) for transmitting and processing signals into, out of, and within Si-based microelectronics would represent a major technological advance in microelectronics-based communication and computer technologies. Nevertheless, through the use of innovative processing techniques it may be possible to use the Si1_xGex/Si heteroepitaxial system in integrated microelectronic/light-wave technologies."

"Pulverized limestone rock dust used in United States underground coal mines to prevent and suppress coal dust explosions must easily disperse by forces of a methane or coal dust explosion. Moisture in the mine environment causes caking of the dust. Colorado School of Mines researchers performed dispersibility tests in a full-size explosion test drift. Tests included conventional, hydrophobized, and rock dust approved for German mines. Conventional and German standard rock dust products partially agglomerate, which may not be effective in suppressing a coal dust explosion, while hydrophobic rock dust retains better dispersibility.INTRODUCTIONA coal dust explosion devastated the Upper Big Branch mine in 2010 resulting in the death of 29 miners, the worst mining accident in the United States since 1972. The explosion propagated through approximately 65 km of active mine workings, but was extinguished in areas that had been properly rock dusted (Page, 2011). Researchers have long studied and established the ability of inert limestone rock dust to suppress coal dust explosions, see Richmond et al. (1975), Cybulski (1975), and Sapko et al. (2000).To be effective, rock dust must contribute to a total inert content of > 80% by weight and 100% of rock dust particles must pass through an 850 µm sieve, while 70% of the rock dust must be finer than 74 µm. This is established in US regulations 30 CFR §75.2. Dry rock dust is a nuisance that prevents mining work downwind from rock dusting activities. To overcome this problem, dust manufacturers have proposed applying the rock dust as a wet slurry or foam. After drying, manufacturers expected the slurry or foam-applied dust to have the same explosion suppression capabilities as dry-applied rock dust.Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) designed and built a full-scale, underground Explosion Test Facility (ETF) at the CSM Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs, Colorado about 20 miles west of the CSM Golden, Colorado campus. To disperse the different rock dust products, researchers produced an air pressure pulse using a mesh array of PETN detonation cord. This method is simpler, more reproducible and safer than other methods considered, including methane-air explosions and a compressed air cannon. The detonation cord blasts produce a wind velocity of 30 to 50 m/s, the minimum velocity at which coal dust explosions can propagate, based on research by Nagy (1981) and Cybulski (1975)."

The use of solid fuel in shaft furnaces to indurate iron ore pellets was originally considered a necessary evil, which the industry worked long and hard to eliminate. Since then changes have taken place in furnace design and operating practices that have led us to our suggestion that solid fuel additions could again be used. In essence, what has happened is that the developments which made it possible to operate without solid fuel have also created new operating conditions favorable to the effective use of solid fuel. Because these new conditions* were brought about in part by the desire to eliminate solid fuel and because the development was a gradual one, the industry failed to reassess its position and for years neglected the possibility of returning to solid fuel.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. The use of uranium metal in non-ferrous metallurgical practice is dis-cussed with reference to its alloying behaviour and chemical activity. It is suggested that the more promising applications are in the treatment of molten metals to combine with impurities. Mines Branch work along these lines is described for copper, zinc, magnesium, aluminum and nickel alloys. It is shown that a cop-per-uranium master alloy (25 per cent U) successfully deoxidizes molten copper without detriment to the electrical or mechanical properties of the product at residual uranium levels of up to 0.8 wt. per cent. Additions of uranium to alpha brass in amounts greater than the lead impurity content were found to remove the deleterious effect of lead on hot-workability. Similar deoxidizing and malleableizing effects were found with uranium additions to nickel. It is thought that uranium forms stable intermetallic compounds with many impurity elements. A significant malleableizing effect can therefore be expected in the presence of other elements besides lead.
