[ ] For President-Elect Leo F. Reinartz has been nominated for the Presidency of AIME in 1954. Mr. Reinartz is now vice-president, special operating development, Armco Steel Corp. He was born in East Liverpool, Ohio, and graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology as metallurgical engineer. He joined Armco in 1909 as a chemist and then became open hearth foreman; assistant superintendent, open hearth dept.; superintendent, open hearth dept.; assistant general superintendent; works manager, East works; manager, Middletown div.; and assistant vice-president, successively. Mr. Reinartz has been active in many technical societies and delivered papers before several. He has been the recipient of the Alumni Award from Carnegie and holds life honorary membership in the AIME National Open Hearth Conference. One of the organizers of the National Open Hearth Conference, Mr. Reinartz was Chairman, Executive Committee (1927 to 1946) and is presently Chairman of its Finance Committee. In October 1951 he was an American Conferee at the First World Metallurgical Congress held in Detroit. An AIME member since 1925, Mr. Reinartz has been active on numerous committees of the Institute.

Future resources of aluminum may require the utilization of low grade ores to provide a more permanent protection for the nation. Aluminum minerals such as cloy, shale, and high iron laterites may become important sources. An evaluation of reserves is given. New laboratory results are reported on the Vereinigte desilication process. THIS report on future resources of aluminum metal emphasizes the necessity for investigating utilization of low grade potential ores to provide more permanent protection for the nation. Partial or complete interruption of the importation of high grade aluminum ores must be given consideration. Ultimately, aluminum minerals such as clay, shale, and high iron laterites may become the principal sources of aluminum. The development of extractive processes for treating these low grade materials is a step in long-range national preparedness that should receive more attention. In formulating such processes, the application of beneficiation methods for the purpose of classifying the several types of minerals before subjecting each type to the more expensive extractive procedures should be considered, and a careful survey of the basic factors of power sources, transportation facilities, and sources of raw material should be made. Domestic Bauxite Resources Of the domestic supply of current, treatable-grade bauxite, 95 pct comes from Arkansas. The present reserve of Arkansas bauxite suitable for metal production, including abrasive-grade, Bayer-grade, and modified Bayer-grade ores, is 34,000,000 tons. The total reserve of bauxite of all grades is approximately 75,000,000 tons. Reserves are estimated on a mined and dried basis. Data available to the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to 1949 were used in preparing Table I, which shows a breakdown by grades of bauxite for about a half of the reserves of the state. The modified Bayer ore, 10,555,500 long dry tons, is based on a cutoff of 8 to 15 pct silica. The sub- marginal 10,074,700 long dry tons is assumed to contain more than 40 pct gibbsite, more than 15 pct silica, and less than 32 pct available alumina. A considerable amount of this low grade material was consumed in 1949 and 1950. Additional tonnages of bauxitic and kaolinitic clays are indicated by the Bureau of Mines drilling project.' Applying a 50 pct factor to arrive at long tons mined and dried, the results of this project are approximately 31,500,000 tons kaolinitic clay at +35 pct Al²O3 and 11,800,000 tons kaolinitic clay at 20 to 35 pct A1,0,. Total reserves of kaolinitic clays are probably quite extensive—several times the reserves shown in the Bureau's work. Total reserves of bauxitic and high iron clays from the drilling program and previously established figures are 63,980,000 tons. The mineral dressing methods,' the lime-sinter process, he lime-sinter modification of the Pederson process," the lime-soda sinter process,"-' and the Alcoa combination processa. have been described in the literature and will not be elaborated upon here. The less familiar Vereinigte Aluminium-Werke process used by the Germans during World War 11 may require some amplification. Anyone familiar with modern manufacturing processes can quickly call to mind many industries in which limestones are essential, and new uses are continually coming to notice. Discussion of the paper of James R. Finlay, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1912, and printed in Bulletin No. 75, March, 1913, pp. 487 to .503. CHAIRMAN JOHN BIRKINBINE :-Having been invited to preside at this session, the Chairman feels that the part he takes in discussions should be limited, although the subject presented is one of much interest to him and there are diverse viewpoints concerning methods of valuing expectancies from what may be considered " ore in sight," a term itself subject to various definitions. Estimates of quantities upon which valuations are made may differ without subjecting the estimators to criticism of unfairness if made by a prospective purchaser or by a seller, or if they are used as the basis for taxation. The hopes of the seller may influence a liberal allowance for estimated reserves, while the expectancies of a willing purchaser are less optimistic, and the tax assessor is expected to limit his consideration to the producing capacity of a mine, with possibly modest allowance for reserves. The knowledge that a property contains or yields mineral or the expectancy that it may be a producer of value adds to the estimate placed upon it by any of the above classes, and a just determination of this value is often a complex problem.

Columbium single crystals were deformed in tension and compression. Reorientation by X-rays and stereographic projections of slip traces indicate that plane of slip may be considered as (110). The plastic behavior is shown to be quite similar to the deformation of molybdenum single crystals. STUDIES on the crystallography of the deformation process in body-centered cubic metals have been renewed recently with investigations of iron single crystals1-" and molybdenum single crystals.4 It is now apparent that too many exceptions to the rationalization based upon the ratio of absolute testing temperature to absolute melting point by Andrade5 exist to permit more serious discussion of this type of analysis. The considerations of resolved shear stress utilizing only planes of the type {ll0}, {112), and {123)³,6 permit analysis of the deformation only on the basis of those three types of planes. The suggestions made by Elam7 and by Greninger8 in which the slip process is envisioned as a composite slip on two nonparallel {110) planes can be illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. It may be seen that an unresolved trace on any plane containing a <111> direction may be accomplished by varying the number of atoms participating in the composite process. By further varying the number of atoms in each plane but keeping the ratio of participating atoms constant, jogs could be obtained in the traces and hence wavy slip lines could be produced. Vogel and Brick&apos; studied the behavior of a iron single crystals in which they suggest that the plane of glide is "non-crystallographic" and may be predicted from the intersection between the great circle joining the slip direction and specimen axis with the great circle whose zone axis is the slip direction. In a more recent investigation on iron single crystals, Steijn and Brick" suggest that the slip mechanism may be considered as made up of a type of composite slip occurring on {110} and {112} planes. Evidence for a possible composite nature of the slip process has been presented for the case of molybdenum in the form of analysis of asterism and specimen axis rotation." Definite proof of a composite slip process must, however, await good electron microscopic resolution of the individual traces making up the unresolved optical trace used in determining the acting slip plane. The present investigation was undertaken to study the behavior of columbium single crystals not only in tension but also in compression since the specimen axis migration should indicate the plane or planes of glide in the same manner that the specimen axis migration in tension indicates the direction of glide. The orientations of eleven crystals investigated are shown in Fig. 2. Specific orientations are missing (those in the vicinity of [Ill] and [001] and consequently the effect of orientation on the crystallography of deformation could not be considered. Experimental Procedure The 1/8 in. rods (7 in. long) were subjected to an axial tension in vacuo while at temperatures in the vicinity of 2000°C for 2 to 4 hr. This treatment resulted in large cylindrical grains (about ½ in. long) occupying the entire cross section. A number of these rods were used for the tension studies by observing the behavior of the individual grains. For the compression studies, single crystals approximately % in. long by 1/8 in. in diameter were cut from the rods; the ends were ground parallel. All specimens were polished electrolytically in a solution of 15 cc HF(48 pct) and 85 cc H2SO4 (concentrated) using a platinum cathode, a current density of 0.04 amp per sq cm and a temperature between 25" and 60°C.10 Orientations were obtained using a Laue back-reflection method (3 cm film to specimen distance) with a ½ mm collimator 9 cm long. Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. has embarked on a continuous improvement effort to ensure that Barrick Gold Corporation will retain its lead in the gold industry in years to come. The continuous improvement initiative is based on careful mapping of the key levers associated with each activity of business. The individual levers are then evaluated to determine their potential to affect the profitability and safety of the operation. The most promising are diagnosed for root causes. These root causes are then addressed to enhance benefits. Through a structured approach of mapping, brainstorming, evaluating and instigating change with follow up measurement and reporting; Barrick Goldstrike is anticipating an increase in throughput at the autoclave facility of 10% with little or no capital expenditure. The resultant approach to Continuous Improvement will be utilized throughout the Goldstrike facility and then throughout Barrick&apos;s world-wide operations.

Mycobacterium phlei has very good potential as a hematite flotation collector. The flotation recovery of hematite is dependent upon the solution pH and concentration of the microorganism. The critical pH for maximum recovery of hematite is around three, which corresponds to the point of zero charge of the microorganism. An excellent correlation between the flotation recovery and bacterial adhesion on hematite is observed. The adhesion of Mycobacterium phlei on hematite can be described by the potential energy of interaction calculations using an extended DLVO theory.

The effects of postmining land use planning are addressed in this paper. These effects may include savings in reclamation costs and increased value of reclaimed land. However, this may result in greater planning costs and possible delays in production. Therefore, an economic analysis was undertaken in an effort to determine the importance of each potential result and to quantify the overall economic impact of postmining land use planning. A discounted cash flow analysis was performed using a surface mine cost model to analyze the sensitivity of selling price to changes in various postmining land use planning parameters. As a result of this analysis, it was determined that the profitability of a project is most sensitive to delays in production, particularly if the delay occurs after major investments have been made. Many methods have been proposed for evaluating postmining land use alternatives (Sweigard and Ramani, 1981). Both quantitative methods, such as benefit-cost analysis (Brock and Brooks, 1968), and nonquantitative methods have been proposed. The application of one specific analytical method is pursued in this paper.

Experimental study on the strength and deformation characteristics of coal under cyclic loading provides guidance for designing coal pillar which is subjected to repeated mining influence during mining. This paper studies the strength, deformation and fatigue process of No.3 coal from Xinhe Colliery under cyclic loading by the MTS815.03 servo-controlled rock mechanics test system. The results indicate that coal is more susceptible to fatigue damage than other hard rocks. Under uniaxial cyclic loading, the fatigue failure ?threshold value? of coal is smaller than 78% of its uniaxial strength, and there is also some fatigue damage when cyclic loading and unloading experiment is carried out below the fatigue failure ?threshold value?. Axial deformation can be divided into three stages: Initial deformation, steady-state deformation and accelerating deformation. Transverse deformation can be divided into two stages: Stable deformation and accelerating deformation. When the transverse deformation begins to increase rapidly and the deformation recovers only slightly upon unloading, it?s a precursor to failure of coal. Under cyclic loading, fatigue failure develops through a process of compaction, strain hardening, and strain softening.

BY THE term mechanical mining is meant that operation, or series of operations, that replace the hand methods of mining. The first undercutting machine to operate in anthracite was placed in the Butler mine of the Hillside Coal & Iron Co., Dec. 23, 1910, by the Sullivan Machinery Co. The first Jackhamer used in the anthracite field was installed at the Wadesville colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. in Oct., 1912, by the Ingersoll-Rand Co. The first longwall conveyor was installed at the Dodge mines of the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Coal Co. in March, 1912. The first mechanical scraper equipment was installed in the Seneca mines of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. in January, 1914. Pre-combustion coal cleaning and post-combustion flue gas desulfurization (FGD) using lime or limestone are the primary methods employed to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission from coal combustion. These processes generate voluminous pyrite and gypsum solid wastes that are usually landfilled, occupying thousands of acres of land and creating serious land and water pollution problems due to the release of acids and toxic substances. An integrated process has been developed for the combined utilization of gypsum and pyrite wastes by converting them into useful products including lime, sulfur, and direct reduced iron (DRI). The process includes four major steps. The first step is to concentrate pyrite from coal preparation tailings using flotation or gravity separation. The second is the thermal decomposition of pyrite into pyrrhotite and sulfur. This is followed by the reduction of pyrrhotite with carbon in the presence of lime to produce iron and calcium sulfide. The fourth step involves the reaction of calcium sulfide with gypsum to produce lime. The chemical reactions involved in the process were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)techniques. Process variables studied included reaction temperature, time, reactant composition, and purity of reactants.

SCHMIDT, Salt Lake City, Utah.-Any furnace that can make a chloridizing roast to yield an extraction of 92 to 93 per cent. and do this at a cost of less than 24c. per ton in a 10-ton unit opens great possibilities for the treatment of certain classes of ores. This cost does not include the salt and will be reduced to about 16 1/2c. per ton in the 35-ton furnace which are now being designed. On a trial run the roaster treated 9.6 ton: of Ontario stope fillings crushed to pass a ¼ -in. opening. The ore is well adapted to chlorination with the exception of insufficient sulphur and occasional days of high lime, but is not adapted to any other process The following is an analysis of the crude ore: Ag, 9.52; Au, 0.029 oz. Pb, 0.71; Cu, 0.11; SiO, 79.4; Zn, 0.57; S, 1.00; Fe, 7.9; Mn, 0.89 CaO, 1.20 per cent. The composition of the mix was: Per Cent. Dry crude ore : 83.4 Moisture 4.4 Salt 8.3 Coal dust 2.3 Pyrite, 70 per cent. pure 1.6

The empirical stope design techniques developed by Mathews et al (1981) and refined by Potvin (1988) and others, have gained rapid acceptance in Australia in the 1990s as a simple, æfirst-passÆ means of designing primary stopes. However, it is recognised that these æstability graphÆ methods can only provide broad design guidelines. Recently published stability graphs (Hutchinson and Diederichs, 1996) encompass a wide range of geological environments, which are not discussed, and the influence of time and blasting practices cannot be easily reviewed. The æscatterÆ in the graphs must reflect, to some degree, different operating practices as well as subtle but important differences in the pre-mining conditions that are not adequately accounted for in the æmodified stability numberÆ. Development of a ælocalÆ, site-specific stability graph may overcome some of these problems. At NormandyÆs Golden Grove Operations, Western Australia, detailed reviews of stope stability performance, including Cavity Monitoring System (CMS) surveys, are undertaken for every stope, with the objective of developing a series of local stability graphs, customised to site conditions and calibrated in terms of æAverage Falloff ThicknessÆ (AFT). Cablebolting of stope hangingwalls is used to develop reinforced æbeamsÆ on each sublevel, effectively dividing the full span into smaller, more stable æsubspansÆ. By analysing stope stability performance in terms of fall-off, cost-benefit studies can be undertaken of the effect of cablebolting and other options for modifying stope spans. The approach used to develop the local stability graphs, and their integration into routine stope design procedures at Golden Grove, is described. The experience gained during stope extraction in the Scuddles orebodies has been successfully applied to the Gossan Hill æC-PanelÆ orebody. This methodology should be applicable to other underground mining operations.

Aluminum phosphide was synthesized and grown in solution of excess aluminum using a modified two-temperature technique. An inversion in the density difference between ALP and molten aluminum takes place at about 1100°. Dispersed nuclei can act as sources for further crystal growth in a manner resembling ripening. Advantage was taken of this phenomenon by introducing a stirring motion into the molten liquid. This was done with a split-phase 10-kH2 rotating magnetic field produced by four horizontal coils placed symmetrically about the furnace at the level of the molten metal. The method also prevents the formation of a surface film which would impede the reaction. By this technique vastly improved yields were obtained and flat crystals 5 by 5 by 0.5 mm were grown at lower temperatures and at greater rates than heretofore. THE family of III-V intermetallic compounds has received much attention since the prediction of their semiconducting properties in the early 1950s. Of the family, A1P has perhaps the highest band gap of those compounds normally possessing the zinc-blende structure. But it has been least studied because it is difficult to handle and grow. The handling difficulties have been dealt with elsewhere and it is sufficient to say here that, by various techniques, many of the difficulties can be overcome.&apos; The difficulties encountered in crystal growth can be related to the refractory nature of A1P and in turn to its high band gap. Because of the anticipated high melting point of the material and the accompanying high phosphorus vapor pressure, the reported work on synthesis and growth was done by epitaxial synthesis-growth via chlorine2 and iodine3 transport and from solution of excess aluminum by the two-temperature technique.4&apos;5 The transport-grown crystals take on the dimensions of the substrate but do not grow easily in thickness. In the usual two-temperature technique as applied on the synthesis of Alp, the temperature of the molten aluminum is kept at 1000° to 1250°C while the phosphorus is maintained at 1 to 20 atm. A thin film of aluminum phosphide and oxide form immediately, impeding the reaction and affecting the yield. Attempts to grow the Alp from such solutions by the methods used to grow Gap and InP from excess gallium and indium have not been successful. "This paper discusses the benefits of industrial minerals, their sources of supply, price and marketing trends, and their increasing use as substitute materials and ""strategic"" minerals. IntroductionKaolin finds have yet to spark the kind of frenzy associated with the 1849 California gold rush; no dolomite deposit has ever gained the notoriety of the Comstock Lode; and few industrial minerals are counted among the currently fashionable list of "" strategic mineral s"". Nevertheless, the glamorous zhine associated with metals may be somewhat superficial; further digging provides perhaps the real foundation of modern society - industrial minerals.They are often tagged as common, everyday materials that are simply dug out of the ground, crushed and hauled to a local point of consumption. Although this description is accurate in the case of road aggregates, sand and gravel, and the like, there are many exceptions to this rule. The term industrial minerals is rather nebulous, covering as it does the mundane and esoteric, the chemically active and the refractory, the $2 and the $10m-a-ton product. All of these minerals influence every facet of modern life from fertilizers to fire retardants, ceramics to cars, construction to clothes, and toothpaste to tennis courts. Their usefulness is well illustrated by the variety of industries they serve; the main ones are listed in Table 1. It is now time to dismiss the notion of non-metallics as the ""third world"" of natural resources business after the metallic and energy products by dispelling some of the myths regarding abundance, variety and value of the group&apos;s sixty-plus products."

The destabilizing effect of water pressure on rock mass stability is examined quantitatively by the finite element method. A coupled code that accounts for the simultaneous effects of rock mass deformation and transient fluid flow is used for this purpose. The traditional soil mechanics assumption of an incompressible fluid is shown to be untenable for the analysis of porous, fractured rock slopes. A Mandel-Cryer effect, a transitory but elevated and potentially destabilizing water pressure following a cut, was not observed.

7. Hoisting Systems Hoists used solely for emergency escape use should above all, be simple and dependable. The hoist systems&apos; motive power should be independent of all other mine equipment so that only an emergency in the immediate vicinity of the hoist will render it inoperative. The hoist should receive the same high level of inspection as is normal with any other man hoisting system. It should be operated at regular intervals, and must include sufficient safety devices to ensure safe operation when hoisting men. Of equal importance, however, safety devices must be included to safeguard the hoist system from in¬advertant damage due to inspection, maintenance or operator error In an emergency situation the hoist operator will be under considerable stress and the system must be simple and foolproof to operate. Under normal circumstances the hoist will only be operated during the regular inspection cycle. Because of this very low operational use rate, certain requirements, normally associated with man hoisting, can be relaxed. In particular the wire rope installation requirements, in terms of drum and sheave diameter and fleet angles, can be reduced provided that rope inspection during the system life is maintained at a high level. The following section includes recommended guidelines for emergency hoist system design, installation, operation, maintenance and inspection A summary of available hoisting equipment and components is included in Appendix C. "Once all the hullabaloo about Finance Minister Wilson&apos;s April 27 budget died down (or was it an April 26 budget?), the pain of the budget papers began to sink in. Individuals and corporations will have to dig deeper and pay more taxes - and government will continue to dig deeper and spend more. The irony of the situation is that higher tax rates actually make flow-through shares more attractive as a tax-deferral investment - a bittersweet ""bravo"" for the mining industry.INTRODUCTIONFor the first time in Canadian history, a major budget address has taken two days to deliver. Of course, it&apos;s not a case of long-windedness, but rather a case of a hastily called press announcement on April 26 in response to a budget leak, followed by a formal budget speech on April 27.The general reaction of the business community to the budget was to the effect that the tax hikes are acceptable, but the government&apos;s failure to curb spending is less than acceptable. Mr. Wilson&apos;s reported response indicated that the government had never promised to cut spending, and that increased government spending would actually benefit the country. Benchmarking of mining operations has been in vogue for a number of years: it seems teams are forever flying around the world to try to understand what other operations are doing. However, unless a benchmarking exercise involves data gathering at a fundamental level and a rigorous analysis process is applied, the trip will be nothing more than industrial tourism. When benchmarking is performed thoroughly, the range of comparisons that can be made is extensive and informative, and need not be restricted to sites with similar conditions and equipment fleets. This paper describes the detailed and rigorous process for benchmarking used throughout AMC benchmarking studies. The paper demonstrates how, through drilling down to the underlying drivers, the often heard cry of æyou canÆt compare us, weÆre differentÆ can be overcome. Included in the discussion are a number of significant issues that have been identified during AMC benchmarking studies. The paper then considers the types of opportunities that have been identified and the potential for improvement. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for planning, measuring and management of operational performance.
