The Tertiary Silverton caldera collapsed asymmetrically to the southwest 27.5 m.y. ago. Resurgent volcanic activity is expressed by a quartz-monzonite stock at the southern caldera margin and by the Red Mountain porphyry stock in the northwest of the caldera which were emplaced at 25 m.y. and 11 m.y. b.p., respectively. The apical Eureka graben formed between 27.5-22.5 m.y. ago and transects the Silverton caldera southwestward. In the northeast it terminates at the 22.5 m.y. Lake City caldera margin. This graben as well as caldera faults provide dominant structural control for base and precious metal deposits. The epithermal gold mineralization of the Gold King mine is proximal to the Red Mountain stock in the north central part of the caldera. Here, west-northwest striking faults related to the collapse of the caldera intersect northeast faults of the Eureka graben. Superimposed upon earlier base metal mineralization at 23 to 22.5 m.y. b.p., the 11 m.y. younger gold metallization was a distinct event at Gold King. Supergene enrichment of the hypogene precious metal assemblage resulted in a metal tenor of up to 3,016 g/t gold and 1,088 g/t silver. The deposit is hosted by quartz-latite tuffs, flows, and flow breccias of the Burns Formation. Veins, up to 5 m wide follow steeply southeast and northwest dipping structures of the Eureka graben. Subsidiary veins up to 2 m wide branch off the main lode and are termed "flat veins" because of their conformable strike but shallow dip of 45' to 50' toward the northwest. THE major use for quartz crystal is in the manufacture of radio oscillator plates and telephone resonator and filter crystals. Quartz crystal is also cut and polished as a semiprecious gem stone, particularly in the colored varieties (amethyst, Brazilian topaz, and others), and often is carved into various objects of art. Prisms, wedges, lenses and other optical parts often are made of quartz crystal, usually for special- purpose instruments. Chips and small clear crystals below 100 grams in weight, called “lascas” by the trade, are the raw material for fused quartz products. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The Greeks believed quartz to be permanently frozen water and therefore called it krustallos, which, literally translated, means clear ice; but ages before their civilization, prehistoric man had crudely cut and polished crystals for rough charms and ornaments. About 2000 B.C., the Egyptians brought the art of cutting quartz to a high level. While there are earlier examples of crystal art that have great value, working in crystal during that period became a means of artistic and religious expression that has endured through the ages. Art museums and private collections throughout the world contain many priceless pieces. They include findings from the tombs of the earliest Egyptian rulers, as well as magnificent art objects in both clear and colored crystal encrusted with silver, gold, enamel, and precious gems of oriental and European workmanship. Pierre Curie first measured the piezoelectric effect of quartz, in 188 1, by placing a weight on the surface of a quartz crystal and measuring the resulting electrical charge, which he found was proportional to the weight applied. The following year the inverse piezoelectric effect was proved by the Curies. By applying a voltage to a piece of quartz, a measurable physical displacement occurs. The first practical application of this effect was the construction of a bimorph unit to measure voltage by measuring the amount of the displacement of the end of the bimorph. Introduction The McClure River Processing Plant is located at McClure in Dickenson County, VA. The plant was originally constructed in 1979 as a 600 st per hour facility. The plant is fed by coals from numerous mines in the area as well as a major longwall mine onsite. Coal is processed predominantly for the metallurgical coal market. The original plant was comprised of three separate processing circuits incorporating a heavy medium vessel for the coarse material (+10 mm). Intermediate sized material (10 x 0.6 mm) was beneficiated in heavy medium cyclones, with the remaining fines (0.6 mm x 0) passing to froth flotation for upgrading. The products from all three circuits were combined prior to thermal drying and then stored in silos or ground storage prior to shipment to the metallurgical coal markets. A middlings heavy medium cyclone circuit was also present to rewash the vessel and primary heavy medium cyclone rejects. The original circuit is as shown as Fig. 1 (Editor's note: All figures are reproduced at the end of this paper.) In reasonably close proximity to the McClure Plant is the much older, less efficient Moss 1 Plant, (Chance cone, table, water only cyclone, froth flotation, Fig. 2), which prior to the McClure Plant expansion was processing considerable tonnages of coal. At that time, the McClure River Plant was processing coal at the maximum possible feed rate, and the Moss 1 Plant was finding increasing difficulty in maintaining the stringent quality specifications on its major metallurgical coal accounts. Given the fact that many of the feeder coals to Moss 1 could be moved with minimal difficulty and cost to McClure, an exercise was conducted to evaluate the potential of expanding the McClure Plant. This would result in transferring coals from Moss 1, thereby increasing yield, reducing operating costs, and enabling customer specifications to be met more easily. After evaluating many possible ways of expanding the McClure Plant, we eventually settled on an approach based on the idea of Gallagher at German Creek in Australia (Gallagher, 1986). Our objective was to increase plant capacity by removing the coarser size fractions (0.60 x 0.15 mm) from froth flotation and at the same time eliminating the finer fractions (1.25 x 0.6 mm) from the heavy medium cyclone circuit, thereby allowing these circuits and therefore the plant as a whole to increase its capacity. These size fractions (0.60 x 0.15 mm from froth flotation and 1.25 x 0.6 mm from the heavy medium cyclone circuit) would be treated in a new spiral circuit. After desired evaluation of the various circuit capacities, including desliming screen, clean coal filter and thermal dryer capacities, etc., it was concluded that we should be able to maintain high levels of processing efficiency in the existing circuitry while at the same time expanding plant feed rate from a nominal 600 st per hour to 1000 st per hour, thereby achieving the objectives The circuit that was finally settled on is shown in Fig. 2. Several unique features were incorporated in this circuit in an attempt to maximize processing efficiency and reduce maintenance costs. First, the idea of a single-stage spiral circuit was abandoned in favor of a two-stage circuit incorporating rewashing the primary spiral middlings in a secondary spiral (Bethell, 88). The spirals selected were Mineral Deposits Model LD4 units. It was felt, after much previous testing, that spiral middlings rather than being a true middling gravity fraction were in fact a combination of true middlings with a preponderance of misplaced light coal and high-density rock. Consequently the insertion of this material directly into either clean coal or refuse streams (per normal practice) would only lead to loss of efficiency. The operating philosophy behind the design of the circuit was to produce the purest coal and rejects possible by adjusting the spiral splitters. Misplacement of refuse into the clean coal and vice versa would be minimized by taking a fairly large middlings cut. By reprocessing this material (10%-15% of primary spiral feed) in a secondary bank of spirals the misplaced material in the primary middlings would be reprocessed and its probability of reporting to the correct stream greatly enhanced. To minimize fines loading on the spirals, fine aperture sieve bends were to be included. A further novel feature of the circuitry is the desliming/ dewatering system. A philosophy of accepting inefficiency but forcing it to work in our favor was developed. The dewatering screens (Linatex Combis) were chosen not for their ultimate screening efficiency but for their ability to remove slimes (tolerating a fair quantity of oversize in the effluent) and their enhanced maintenance characteristics. Any oversize passing into the effluent, together with the fine coal centrifuge effluent, would pass to classifying cyclones, the objective of which was to reject to overflow (and hence froth flotation) as many fines as possible (-150 µm) without running the risk of losing coarse (1.25 x 0.15 mm) material to oversize. Hence, by a process of producing a "slime free" screen product coupled with a "coarse free" cyclone overflow, sizing efficiency could be maximized. Obviously, recirculating load had to be factored into the Combi Screen design capacity. The spiral circuit as shown in Fig. 2 was installed at McClure River in January 1988. The spiral circuit efficiency was very high immediately, and, after the normal debugging, plant capacity has been increased to the point at which we are currently processing of the order of 1100 st per hour. Test program The performance of the spiral circuit has been evaluated by two major samplings of the entire new circuit, coupled with routine bi-monthly tests on all other major components of the plant circuitry.

Investigations have been made in this field by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise,2 and L. Sterner-Rainer.3 It is the intent of this paper to present in schematic diagrams the effects of various elements upon the color and the melting point of gold alloys. In this investigation 2-oz. melts made in a high-frequency inductiorl furnace were used for all tests. The melting points were determined by the use of a calibrated chromel-alumel thermocouple sealed in a thin-walled alundum tube. The couple was then submerged in the molten metal and the freezing and melting points were determined by using a Leeds and Northrup potentiometer. By checking several melts using copper, zinc and gold, it was found that the accuracy of determining the melting point was within ± 5" F. To determine the differences in colors and to classify them, a wet tissue paper was placed over the polished samples and examined under a uniform white light. The 2 by 45 by 0.045-in. samples were cut from 50 per cent cold-worked strip. The original ingot was 3 by % by % in. This visual comparison, although not scientifically exact, served as a quite satisfactory means for determining and classifying these differences. The base alloys, or "hardeners," were first made up and analyzed, after which the gold and silver were added. This method of making up the alloys was chosen so that the same base alloy could be used for the gold alloys of different karats. The first series consisted of gold, copper, zinc and nickel, the copper comprising from 85 to 65 per cent of the content of the "hardener" and the zinc and nickel replacing copper. The second scries consisted of gold, silver, copper, zinc and nickel, the copper comprising from 85 to 65 per cent of the content of the hardener with the silver, nickel and zinc replacing copper. There was no particular reason for choosing these combinations, except that they gave a color range from red-pink to white.

Uranium exploration expenditure in Australia reached a record level of A$220.5 million in 2008, which has subsequently declined to A$185.2 million for the year ended 30 June 2009. Recent discoveries include: Ranger 3 Deeps east of Ranger open pit (Northern Territory), Pepegoona and Yadglin sandstone hosted deposits (South Australia), and Thunderball project (Northern Territory). Australia?s Reasonably Assured Resources recoverable at costs of <US$80/kg U at June 2009 are estimated to be 1,210,000 t U, 4% higher than the estimate for December 2008. The main additions were in the south eastern portion of the Olympic Dam orebody. The Olympic Dam Expansion is based on a large open pit and will increase output to an annual capacity of 19,000 t U3O8; 750,000 t copper; 800,000 ounces gold. The Four Mile in situ recovery project was approved in July 2009. An ion exchange facility is to be constructed at Four Mile and uranium-bearing resins will be transported to the Beverley plant to recover the uranium. Recent developments at Ranger mine, and Honeymoon, Oban and Yeelirrie projects are discussed.

The technology to selectively leach gold, silver and base metals from ores, concentrates, and wastes, using an alkaline glycine solution, has initiated significant interest in using the new technology in various environments such as in-situ, in-place, dump, heap, and vat and agitated tank leaching. It has been shown that glycine acts synergistically with a number of other lixiviants to lower the net consumption of the other lixiviants while allowing low cost glycine solution recovery. Glycine is a non-toxic, stable, environmentally benign reagent that is available in bulk industrial quantities. It has the ability to dissolve most copper oxide and sulfide minerals, as well as native copper, whilst not interacting with acid consuming gangue nor dissolving iron and various or ubiquitous gangue elements. It acts synergistically with small amounts of cyanide to leach gold-copper ores at leach rates higher than either glycine or cyanide on their own, while significantly reducing cyanide consumption and eliminating detoxification requirements. The leaching behaviour of various glycine based systems will be reviewed, followed by the evaluation of the adsorption of gold onto activated carbon. Where the economics merit it, copper can be easily recovered using solvent extraction or sulfide precipitation.

"Cut-off grade is a decision-making criterion often used for determining the quantities of material (ore and waste) to be mined, ore processed, and saleable product. It therefore directly affects the cash flows from a mining operation and the net present value (NPV) of a mining project. A series of different cut-off grades that are applied over the life of mine (LOM) of an operation defines a cut-off grade policy. Due to the complexity of the calculation process, previous work on cut-off grade calculation has mostly focused on deterministic approaches. However, deterministic approaches fail to capture the uncertainty inherent in input parameters such as commodity price and grade-tonnage distribution. This paper presents a stochastic cut-off grade optimization model that extends Lane’s deterministic theory for calculating optimal cut-off grades over the LOM. The model, code-named ‘NPVMining’, uses realistic grade-tonnage realizations and commodity price distribution to account for uncertainty. NPVMining was applied to a gold mine case study and produced an NPV ranging between 7% and 186% higher than NPVs from deterministic approaches, thus demonstrating improved project value from using stochastic optimization approaches. This paper records over twenty years&apos; experience with the use of the Rheolaveur system in the United States, showing its ability to meet changing conditions caused by the dirtier mine output of present-day mechanical mining methods. Data are given on size ranges handled, number and capacity of units installed, maintenance experience, and operating results on two-product and three-product separations. IT is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the principles employed in the Rheolaveur system of fine-coal cleaning as these have been fully covered in the technical literature of the Institute."2 Rather, our purpose will be to record the highlights of over 20 years&apos; experience in the United States with Rheolaveur fine-coal launders, which will indicate their capabilities and costs of cleaning and their adaptability to meet the changing conditions caused by present-day mechanical mining methods. Rheolaveur fine-coal launders are used in the United States to treat a wide variety of size ranges of fine coal, the coarsest being 1/2 in. to 0 and the finest about 1/8 in. to 0. In Europe feeds as coarse as 5/8 in. and as small as 1/2 mm (28-mesh) to 0 are being cleaned. The size ranges usually handled in this country are 3/8 to 1/4-in. round to 0. Thirty five units with a combined hourly feed capacity of 3200 tph have been installed in the United States. Individual units are cleaning as little as 25 tph, while others are cleaning as much as 200 tph. Rheolaveur fine-coal launders offer cleaning units of high capacity and are outstanding in requiring a minimum of building space per ton of input. Experience has shown that maintenance costs are low. Several installations were made in the Pittsburgh district from 1928 to 1930, and since that time operation has been largely two shifts per day. Minor repairs to liner plates and Rheo boxes have been required during the intervening years, but no major replacement of launders was required until 1947 and 1948. At one of these plants, launders operated for 17 years before they were replaced and during that period over 26,000,000 tons of —5/16-in. coal were cleaned. The effect of the much dirtier raw coal produced by mechanical loading of the Pittsburgh seam is shown by the following tests. The data in table I summarize the performance of a Rheo fine-coal unit when cleaning hand-loaded raw coal. The —4-in. raw coal fed to the cleaning plant analyzed only 8.16 pct ash and 1.31 pct sulphur and contained 4.6 pct sink, 1.55 sp gr. Two years later, in 1945, mechanically-loaded coal from the same mine was cleaned in the same plant. The feed, —4 in., then analyzed 20.10 pct ash and 1.53 pct sulphur and contained 20.2 pct sink, 1.55 sp gr. The performance of the Rheo fine-coal unit when cleaning this coal is given in table 11. It will be noted that the +48-mesh coal is cleaned almost as thoroughly as in table I. The large amount of high-ash slimes produced from the dirtier feed are responsible for the higher ash of —--48-mesh washed coal in table 11. In previous publications,5 results of single-blow bit tooth impacts on saturated rocks at various stress states were reported. This paper extends these earlier works to include study of bit impact tests on salt water-saturated Berea and Bandera sandstone samples under conditions of elevated confining and pore pressure. During the tests dynamic filtration and deposition of a mud cake were occurring due to the presence of drilling mud in the borehole and a borebole-to-formation pressure differential. Results indicate that saturation of these sandstones with salt water tends to make them weaker than when saturated with nonreactive fluids. Plastic failure often occurs even when extremely high fluid-loss muds are present in the borehole. The failure mode tends toward plasticity with decreasing fluid loss. Brittle failure of sandstones in mud-filled holes is apparently relatively rare. Depending on the stress level, and the associated failure mode, withdrawal of the bit tooth induces a tensile force that seems rather important relative to the quantity of rock removed by vertical tooth impact. INTRODUCTION A vast majority of the oil wells drilled today involve the use of colloidal muds having a measurable mud filtrate loss. It is known from field experience that reduction of the water loss of a mud generally results in a reduction of the penetration rate. This paper describes an investigation of crater formation at simulated bottom-hole pressure conditions for drilling fluids having different water losses. The literature on single bit tooth impact (cratering) at atmospheric conditions is extensive, but only a limited amount of work has been performed at the stress conditions similar to that found in oil wells. Spherical penetrator cratering tests on rocks at hydrostatic pressure were performed by Payne and Chippenda1e.1 Chisel impact studies on limestone with independently varying overburden and borehole pressure and atmospheric pore pressure were reported by Garner, et al.2 Gnirk and Cheatham3 performed "static" penetrator tests on dry rocks at equal overburden and borehole pressures. Podio and Gray4 studied the effect of pore fluid viscosity at atmospheric pore and borehole pressures and varying overburden pressures. Their results illustrated the importance of fluid saturation of the rock. Yang and Gray5 reported single tooth impact tests on saturated rocks at elevated borehole, pore and confining pressures, but with equal pore and borehole pressures. For the work reported in Refs. 4 and 5, filtration across the hole bottom purposely was avoided. Maurer6 has investigated the effect of independently varying pore and borehole pressures at elevated overburden pressures by using a zero water-loss mud in the borehole. His tests were carried out under conditions that allowed independent control of overburden, pore and borehole pressures, but without control of filtration at the hole bottom. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE APPARATUS The single blow chisel impact apparatus used by Garner,2 as modified for this study, is shown in Fig. 1. A cross section of the pressure vessel is shown in Fig. 2. Several pieces of auxiliary equipment were added to the original apparatus in order that the borehole and pore pressure could be applied in a manner analogous to the actual bottom-hole situation. The pore-pressure system included a filtrate volume-measuring transducer and had sufficient surge capacity to allow filtrate to be injected into the sample without significant changes in pore pressure at points remote to the borehole. The borehole-pressure system contained a cross connection to the pore-pressure system so that both systems could be pressured simultaneously. The No. 4 I.S.F. Smelter Complex at the Avonmouth Works of Imperial Smelting Corporation (N.S.C.) Limited commenced operation at the beginning of 1968. The furnace rating is 120,000 tons zinc and 40,000 tons lead per annum. Zinc and lead concentrates are unloaded onto a 1,000 tons per hour capacity conveyor belt and automatically weighed and sampled before receipt into a 48,000 ton capacity raw material store. Distribution is by a reversible boom stacker into 16 x 3,000 ton bays and recovery is by a front end loader. Materials are fed to 16 proportioning bins for feeding via continuous weigh feeders to a 132 square metre effective updraught area sinter machine with a material flow rate of 240 tons per hour over the machine. The required quantity of output lump sinter at up to 800ºC is fed to 2 x 600 ton storage bins on the I.S.F. plant. By-product SO2 rich gas is fed to a conventional wet gas single stream acid plant rated at 600 tons per day utilizing a dry N.T.P. gas volume of 100,000 cubic metres per hour. The hot sinter and preheated coke (800ºC) are automatically neighed and charged to a 27.3m2 shaft area I.S.F. fitted with 2 x 5.5 m. wide lead splash condensers. Grade 4 zinc is tapped and transferred to the zinc refinery. Conventional type lead bullion and slag are tapped from the bottom of the furnace through a separation forehearth. The refinery consists of 6 lead and 3 cadmium columns to produce some 52,000 tons per annum of S.H.G. metal. S.H.G. metal and Grade 4 metal is cast into various shapes as required.

Application of the discrete element method incorporating the simple kinetic model of the ball-to-ball and ball-to-wall interactions enables us to visualize the details of the grinding actions prevailing in the ball mills. We have developed a computer program to represent a generic mill model with which we can simulate tumbling mills, vibration mills, centrifugal mills and planetary mills. While the program can be used for various purposes including design of new equipment, one obvious application of it is the analysis of the conventional tumbling ball mills for better understanding and improvement. The purpose of this paper is to present a model and to observe its behavior in particular attention to the spatial distribution of the energy dissipation as well as the energy spectrum and their dependence on the major parameters such as mill speed, ball filling, liner configuration, slurry viscosity and the hardness of the ore.

The purpose of this paper is to outline a recent development in ground fault protection. The paper deals with the A problems of both grounded and ungrounded systems, with regard to hazards to personnel and equipment, and shows that the increased sensitivity and speed of operation of this new detector results in increased safety to personnel and reduced stresses on equipment, and permits the detection of leakage currents before they become serious faults. The detector can be applied to all distribution systems, either A.C. or D.C., up to 15 kv., and the detector itself can be tested at regular intervals without interrupting line circuits. T HERE is always controversy among engineers as to whether distribution systems should be grounded or ungrounded. There are many experi-enced engineers on both sides of this controversy, and each have valid reasons for their choice

AT the New York meeting of the American Institute of Mining-and Metallurgical Engineers held in February, 1926, W. H. Bassett and J. C. Bradley presented a paper entitled "Exudations on Copper Castings."§ The purpose of the present paper, as the title suggests, is to call attention to somewhat similar phenomena which the authors have encountered in brass and bronze. From a study of the examples given, a more-or-less speculative theory of "inverse segregation" is advanced. PROTUBERANCES ON ADMIRALTY BRASS In the rolling mill of the Scovill Manufacturing Co., there have been found quite commonly bars of certain alloys which had a sort of shaggy roughness on the surface due to slight metallic protuberances. No special attention was paid to these until some bars were found on which these protuberances were heavy enough at the bottom of the bars to produce a blistered appearance. A sample of the protuberances was milled off the surface of the bar illustrated (Fig.. 1a) and upon analysis was found to contain 66.66 percent. copper, 4.02 per cent. tin and .03 . per cent. lead, whereas the average composition of the bar was 70.21 per cent. copper, 1.21 per cent. tin, and .01 per cent. lead. A sample of the shaggy-rough protuberances at the -very top of a bar was also analyzed and was found to contain 2.45 per cent. tin, indicating that it was probably of the same origin as the blistered areas. These results were not entirely unexpected for previous analyses of this alloy had -revealed that the surface was richer in tin than the rest of the bar. This, of course, is contrary to what we would expect from a consideration of the equilibrium diagram and has been called "inverse segregation."

Automatic digital phase imaging should yield unbiased and representative characterization of gold ores. However, this is not a simple task due to low gold grades, fine grain size, possible complex mineralogy, nugget effect, etc. A critical test was done by two methods, using the same sections of a gold-rich ore: with an optical (OM) and with an electron microscope (EM). In general, the two methods are consistent and useful for ore processing. There are some minor differences e.g. the detection of very fine gold grains is enhanced by EM.

One goal of the Bureau of Mines is to develop technology tp insure a dependable supply of minerals to the United States. To support this goal, the Bureau&apos;s Albany Research Center has modified a commercial atomic absorption spectrophotometer to rapidly determine trace levels of mercury by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Such diverse materials as ores, mill products, stream water, sediments, and flue dust have been analyzed. A very high dynamic range of 0.2 ng/ml to 1 µg/ml of mercury in solutions is routinely analyzed by this instrument.
