In the mining and minerals industry, development, introduction and construction of new plant designs, to meet sustainability objectives, face a series of major hurdles. Typical are the long investment cycle times, the designer does not normally control the spending (the owner does), and the industry is inherently technologically conservative or risk adverse while accepting the often more significant geological, market and political risks.æSustainable Plant DesignÆ is an approach to plant and facility design that drives the necessary culture change and acceptance by minimising technical risk and maximising potential returns. The approach forces consideration of sustainability objectives and risks early in the project, where cost saving and efficiency improving opportunities can be maximised.In Hatch, we are using three proven tools under the ærisk managementÆ umbrella to drive sustainable development principles into our projects:Sustainable Plant Design, FutureWatchTM Reviews, and Clean Plant DesignTM . These proactive practical, not theoretical, techniques for driving change from within and reducing whole of life cycle costs will be discussed and illustrated with case studies.

Rheological models are widely accepted as a means of describing the mechanical behavior of geologic materials. It has been found, however, that rheological models developed for a specific stress level on the basis of linear visco-elasticity generally are not satisfactory at other stress levels. It has been suggested that the parameters of such models should be functions of stress level (Hardy, 1965; Kim, 1971). In this paper, continuous functions of stress have been utilized to obtain the required variation of Burgers model parameters with stress level. The model developed using these functions provides a constitutive relation which reflects the real time-dependent behavior of rock materials. The new model is capable of predicting the creep behavior over a wide range of stress levels and also predicts mechanical behavior under different loading condition (e.g. constant stress rate). It is also interesting to note that the mechanical behavior of individual elements in the model appear to reflect the different stages of brittle fracture in rocks (Bieniawski, 1967), namely; crack closure, elastic deformation, stable fracture propagation and unstable fracture propagation.

This study examines the application of Landsat TM data to the identification of hydro- thermal alteration in the arid terrain of the El Salvador region of north Chile. Numerical reflectance values were extracted from the digital Landsat TM data for a variety of rock surfaces, including four parts of the El Salvador gossan, for each of six spectral bands. These reflectance values were analysed statistically in order to select the three spectral bands, combined as a colour composite image, that are most efficient in discriminating different varieties of alteration and for general geolog- ical interpretation. The most cost effective com- posite image for this area is a combination of bands 1,4 and 7 as the blue, green and red components respectively, with simple contrast enhancement. This image is superior to some much more expensive enhancement techniques and allows unambiguous identification of areas of hydrothermal alteration larger than about 50m. INTRODUCTION Dense medium processes have been used to separate coal and ores for over a hundred years. In fact Sir Henry Bessemer first patented a process in 1858. In recent years, their importance relative to other gravity dependent processes has increased. This is particularly true in the coal industry where over 60% of all preparation plants operating in 1984 in North America (1) contained either dense medium vessel or cyclone circuits. In addition, the stringent product quality demands of the consumer, together with increases in mining costs, dictate that the cleaning circuits be both predictable and efficient. Dense medium systems are the most predictable and efficient of all gravity- dependent processes. The majority of the text of this chapter will be concerned with dense medium applications as they relate to the coal industry. However, the techniques and calculation procedures can be applied, in general, to all non-coal minerals (such as diamonds, marginal iron and lead-zinc ores and gravel) which take advantage of a difference in specific gravity between the saleable product and the reject. The object in dense medium cleaning is to produce a liquid whose effective specific gravity is between that of the concentrate and the reject. In which case the lighter product will float to the surface and the heavier product will sink to the bottom. Unfortunately, this simple process becomes complicated by the following practical necessities: (a) collecting and removing the float and sink products from the medium without disturbing the free settling effects; (b) maintaining and controlling the specific gravity of the medium; (c) separating and reclaiming the medium once the products have left the separating vessel; and (d) separating finer sized particles which take longer to fall through the dense, and often viscous, medium. As a result of the last issue (item d) two main types of dense medium separators have evolved: dense medium vessels and dense medium cyclones. Dense medium vessels are essentially large baths through which the dense medium flows at a relatively slow velocity. The lighter products float to the surface and are carried out of the vessel by the medium flow. The heavier products sink to the bottom of the vessel and are physically transported out either by means of a conveyor (usually a chain conveyor) or a rotating, lifting arrangement (Figure 1). The Argo Archaean lode gold deposit is hosted within a structurally complex shear zone system, 70 km south of Kalgoorlie, and 3 km west of the crustal-scale Boulder û Lefroy Fault. Argo is an active underground mine currently producing at a rate of 120 koz pa with a Probable and Proven Reserve as at December 2005 of 2.19 Mt at 5.94 g/t Au (419 koz), a reduction on the December 2004 Probable and Proven Reserve of 4.58 Mt at 5.74 g/t Au (845 koz). This Reserve is hosted in six separate gold bearing lodes within the Argo shear system. Presently, a further six subeconomic shears are recognised. The 2005 Reserve figure represents a reduction of 426 koz compared to the 2004 Reserve as a result of a thorough review of the geological interpretation/resource model, and engineering factors applied to the Resource/Reserve, and depletion due to mining. Year on year Resource/Reserve figures at Argo had gradually increased as additional information on the system became available and mining methods were increasingly resolved with early production. The portal for Argo underground mine was cut in June 2002 within the highly profitable Argo open pit. The proposed æAvocaÆ bottom-up mining method required extensive lead time between development and the commencement of stoping in April 2004. During development considerable additional complexity in the Resource was encountered. Additional structures were identified, and complex splay interactions affecting the geology impacted on development. Intensive concurrent exploration in the footwall to the main lode during this period was the main cause of the increase in the Resource/Reserve figures during early development. As development progressed, lower grade continuity was observed than was previously interpreted. At the same time, drilling of deeper portions of the deposit and subsequent reinterpretation of the geological model significantly reduced strike lengths of economic mineralisation. Radical changes to the mining methods were required to improve productivities and to satisfy geotechnical considerations. The changes altered the engineering factors applied, which resulted in a reduction in the Reserve figures.

The purpose of this investigation was to measure PVT behavior of various types and combinations of heavy hydrocarbon components from the paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic classes where the relative proportions Of the various components were selected to approximate those of natural gas or gas condensate systems. Synthetic mixtures were used so that the compositions Of the various components could be measured accurately. n-Heptane, methylcyclohexane and methylbenzene were used to represent the paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic components of the heavy fraction. In the mixtures studied, the heavy fraction composition was held constant at O. O5-mole lraction, the balance being methane except for one mixture where 0.10-mo1e fraction of an intermediate component, propane, was added. The PVT data for the mixtures were determined in a variable-volume, constant-mass apparatus at psuedo-reducedtemperatures from 1.84 to 2.00, over a pseudo-reduced pressure range from 2.3 to 12.0. The experimental results showed that, regardless of the type of heavy material (paraffinic, naphthenic, aromatic, or combinations thereof) mixed with methane or methane and propane, the compressibility factors at equal values of pseudo-reduced temperature and pressure varied by less than 2.2 percent. INTRODUCTION PVT data is used for natural gas and gas condensate fluids in determining reserves of reservoirs and performance of wells, in metering produced fluids, and in recombining samples for laboratory studies. While there are vast amounts of PVT data reported for natural gas and gas condensate systems from which useful correlations have been developed, ' the compositional analyses for these systems and the resultant correlations typically were made with components analyzed through some arbitrary carbon number, usually C6, with the residue reported as a lumped "heavy" fraction. The heavy fraction was stoichiometrically recombined on the basis of an apparent molecular weight to give the final compositional analysis. It is virtually impossible to make a systematic analysis of the effect that variation of the relative amounts of paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic constituents of the heavy fraction of natural systems might have on PVT behavior. Because there is considerable latitude in the relative amounts of these constituents, one speaks of crudes or condensate liquids as being "paraffin base", etc. It is of interest to determine if changes in the relative amounts of these three types of hydrocarbons in the heavy fraction cause significant changes in PVT behavior. If so, steps should be taken to describe better the nature of the heavy fraction in PVT correlations. If not, more confidence can be placed in the correlations presently employed. DESIGN OF THE EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION We attempted to determine if changes in the base of the heavy fraction would cause significant changes in the PVT behavior of gas or gas condensate fluids. Synthetic mixtures were used to enable us to systematically vary the base of the heavy fraction and to analyze accurately the fluids. We found that the heavy fraction of naturally occurring condensate systems seldom exceeds 0.05-mole fraction. Thus, the mole fraction of the heavy fraction in the synthetic systems studied was set arbitrarily at 0.05, to maximize whatever deviations in PVT behavior that might occur. Further, we judged that since the C7 hydrocarbons normally are present in greater quantities than higher carbon number hydrocarbons in naturally occurring systems, the use of n-heptane, methyl cyclohexane, and methylbenzene to represent the paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic species in the heavy fraction would be most appropriate. Centre Jardin Lac Pelletier (CJLP) has been a leading actor in the revitalisation of closed mining sites in northern Québec for over 20 years. Over that period, CJLP developed a cost-efficient technique that transforms sterile mining residue into a substrate able to support a resilient ecosystem. Using a unique mix of organic matter, fertilisers and selected plant species, this technique rapidly builds a microorganic fauna and a layer of humus that will sustain the creation of vegetation coverage. The coverage is composed of over 13 different plant species, each having a unique role in the development of a resilient ecosystem, from soil stabilisation to nitrogen fixing. Considerably less expensive than traditional methods using civil engineering techniques, it does not require the use of heavy machinery or the spread of topsoil. This technique has been successfully used to restore over 20 sites in Québec such as Joutel, Yvan Vézina and Louvicourt. It is a proven technique that has passed the test of actual implementation. The presentation will review the biological, production and economic aspects of the technique through the revitalisation of the Joutel site.

Paddington processing plant is located approximately 30 km north of Kalgoorlie on the Menzies Highway and is owned by Placer Dome Asia Pacific. First mining was from the Paddington Pit, but in subsequent years the plant has had a history of treating ores from a large number of sources, and has used several different methods to reconcile mining and mill production. Reconciliations are necessary to keep a check on the quality control of mining and grade control processÆs. There is a need to be able to identify and resolve issues that will affect the profitability of the organisation quickly. They are also used to check the quality of the resource/reserve statements, and allow the accurate and timely payment of royalties to stakeholders. During the formation of the Kalgoorlie West operations when Delta Gold Limited and Goldfields Limited merged in 2001, the complexity of reconciliations increased dramatically. The expansion of the scope of reconciliations to include two mills, four underground mines and seven open pits, and ore from one deposit to both mills meant that a revised strategy was essential. A variety of issues have arisen over the years with discrepancies occurring when reconciling both tonnes and grade. There are many ways to approach reconciliations, and in recent times these philosophies have been widely debated on site. A consistent and logical approach that takes into account many different sources of ore, as well as different methods of delivery to the Run of Mine stockpiles is therefore necessary. This would standardise the different approaches taken by the various operations that combined to form Kalgoorlie west. The new method reconciles mill production back to the individual ore sources, and produces reconciled-mined tonnes and grade based on the mill throughput and the change in stockpiles. There will generally be a small discrepancy between the claimed mined tonnes produced (and grades) and the mill production. This needs to be highlighted to the operations concerned if it considered unacceptably large. Paddington mill over the last few years has had up to ten sources of ore each year, and up to 15 different stockpiles being processed during each month from those various pits. This combined with the need for a blended oxide/fresh feed, whilst striving to deliver a consistent (grade and hardness) product to the mill, has meant that reconciliations have been very difficult.

This paper introduces a method for teaching workers to communicate necessary information when giving or receiving emergency warning messages. Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, people may not get the information they need to take appropriate action. Interviews conducted with 48 underground coal miners who had escaped mine fires revealed that the warning information provided was inadequate. In some cases, sufficient information was not provided to the endangered miners. At other times, miners failed to ask for information they needed to plan and execute effective escapes. Researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory have been studying the content of emergency warning messages and have developed an emergency communication protocol. A training intervention that presents the protocol and related mental cues is being evaluated for effectiveness in improving the content of emergency messages. In this paper the protocol is presented and the training package described. The evaluation procedures and a summary of the analyses conducted to-date are also provided. The training package was developed for use with underground coal miners, but could easily be modified for emergency communications training in other settings.

Provide a coalbed methane data source for industry use in mine planning. Approach Coalbed methane data have keen collected and formatted into a computer implemented data base with software developed for storage, retrieval, and generating files of selected data in response to information requests and for statistical analysis of relationships among various coal parameters. How It Works Coalbed methane data is obtained by the Bureau's direct method test on exploration coal cores. The test involves sealing fresh coal cores in desorption canisters and periodically bleeding the gas into a water-filled, graduated cylinder to measure the volume of gas released. Coalbed methane data collected over the past 9 years have been entered into a computer-implemented data base for efficient retrieval and statistical analysis. Data base processing is accomplished with a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report writing software package (Datatrieve 11). Information requests from the coal industry are processed with the system, and the data in the desired output format am printed and forwarded to the requestor. Information such as coalbed name, location (state and county), depth of sample, gas content, and coal rank are available from the system. The data can be used for

To provide safer and more efficient mine operations by improving the operational performance of underground trolley line communication systems. Approach The dc trolley line provides a convenient means of In-mine communication since it can carry signals to each phone on the system whether the phones are in mine vehicles or in a fixed location such as that of a dispatcher. In many cases, however, the system does not perform satisfactorily. Short communication range, noise, and dead spots commonly interfere with effective communication. These problems are inherent with the trolley line, which was designed to transmit power and not communication Signals. As a power line, the trolley line is connected to rectifiers and feeds many loads such as motors, water pumps, track block lights, etc. Each of these devices represents a low impedance radio frequency (RF) shunt that seriously reduces carrier communication Signals. Performance is therefore often poor and can be improved only if the effects of the various shunts can be reduced. The Bureau of Mines has developed numerous methods applicable to either existing or planned phone systems which can improve communication range and reduce the shunting effects of the various loads.

"Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery in open pit mines; however, it may also adversely affect safety by posing a higher risk of slope failure. The implementation of slope monitoring programmes is recommended to manage this risk inherent in steeper slopes. In this paper, the design and evaluation of monitoring campaigns to measure subsurface deformation and groundwater pore pressure in open pit mines is presented. The monitoring programmes were applied to a theoretical case of an open pit mine designed using DeepMine software (BOAMine SpA, 2015). Mine plans were developed based on the initial base case scenario with monitoring programmes considered for four types of monitoring instrumentation: two established technologies, in-place inclinometers (IPIs) and vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs); one emerging technology, the ShapeAccelArray (SAA); and a novel technology under development, the Enhanced Networked Smart Markers (ENSMs). Technical and economic appraisals of the monitoring programmes and sensitivity analysis of the developed mine plans showed that using ENSMs spaced every 4 m had the lowest cost per unit of data gathered. IntroductionSeveral open pit mines have already exceeded their design life and, as they become deeper and reach depths over 1000 m, they face higher rock stress levels and tensile deformations (Stacey and Xianbin, 2004; Stacey et al., 2003). The more complex the conditions in modern open pit mines, the more difficult it is to achieve long-lasting, stable pit slopes and to meet the mine’s economic needs: maximize financial returns, minimize risks to operational safety, achieve optimal ore recovery, and minimize waste extraction (Stacey, 2009). Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery (Stacey, 2009; Calderon and Tapia, 2006; Bye and Bell, 2001; Jefferies, Lorig, and Alvarez, 2008); however, it may adversely affect operational safety, as steeper slopes are less stable than shallow slopes (Steffen et al., 2008; Mphathiwa and Cawood, 2014)."

"An interactive computer model of a dragline, windrow and spoil pile has been developed for modelling oil sands mining operations. The model is to be used in conj unction with models of other oil sands mining equipment, such as bucket-wheel excavators and reclaimers, conveyors, hoppers, bins, trucks and shovels, to study mining operations on a minute-by-minute basis. From the orebody description and mining selectivity, layers of ore and reject are determined and mined by the dragline. Reject is dumped on the pit floor; ore is either dumped on a windrow for later removal by a bucket-wheel reclaimer or directly dumped into a hopper feeding a conveyor. The model allows for the presence of pads as a dragline base, key cuts and a number of interruptions to the mining operation such as shift changes, boom checks, engineering services, repairs, delays, preventative maintenance, etc. A CRT display keeps the model operator informed about equipment status and performance. The model operator can direct the course of the simulation by issuing commands to the model at any time during the simulation.IntroductionThis paper describes an interactive computer model of a dragline, windrow and spoil pile. The model was designed by the author based on information and specifications provided by Canstar Oil Sands Ltd. The model design was implemented and tested on Petro-Canda's IBM computer system by DMR and Associates Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta.The model was designed to form three components of an oil sands mining operations model, described in reference I. Figure 1 shows the interaction of those components with the remainder of the oil sands mining model.An ""Ore/Waste Body"" data base provides information to the dragline model about the location and composition of or e and waste in the mine. The dragline model is used to simulate mining this ore/waste body, to build up spoil piles for center reject (waste) and to dump ore onto windrows or hoppers (situated over conveyors) to deliver the ore to the extraction plant. The windrow model component provides a data base which will be used by a model of a bucket-wheel reclaimer which simulates the loading of ore from the windrow on to a conveyor via a bridge."

The Imperial Smelting Furnace at Cockle Creek, NSW, was constructed in 1961 and is the oldest facility using the Imperial Smelting process in operation. In recent years there have been significant improvements in many areas of the operation, including production, safety, hygiene and environmental performance. Steps taken to achieve these improvements are described. Plans to secure a profitable future while meeting environmental requirements are outlined.

Some two years ago the Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. organized a special study of unit operation. That method of handling oil pools had been urged as the remedy that would save the United States petroleum industry from the crisis that even then loomed as more than a small cloud on the horizon. Today it is only one of several remedies vigorously advocated. Proration, regulation of imports, unit operation, constructive marketing and interstate compacts all have their earnest proponents, but the advocates of each have been disposed to look with indifference on the other respective proposals, with the result that none has had united support. Meanwhile the industry has drifted rapidly toward a serious crisis, the imminence of which in itself may bring the solution. The gravity of the situation tends to force study of the merits of proposals that a short time previously were brushed aside as impractical; and to the surprise of most of us we now find merit where previously we thought none existed. Irrespective of what might have been the result had any single proposal being adopted years ago, it is now apparent that under present conditions no one of the remedies—unit operation, proration, regulation of imports or constructive marketing—standing alone would be of much benefit. On the other hand, it is becoming evident that a well balanced program comprising all four of these remedies might save the United States petroleum industry; also that some such comprehensive program might be necessary to save it. It is even becoming evident that the despised interstate compact might be an appropriate type of machinery in which to group and coordinate all these remedies. We have progressed beyond the belief that either the industry or the government working alone can correct the situation, and have arrived at the more healthy realization that the task will require most sympathetic cooperation between government and industry, backed by an equally sympathetic public understanding. If we were functioning under a Mussolini or a Stalin, stabilizing the petroleum industry would be a much simpler task. However, in the

A comprehensive survey of mine seismicity and rock bursting during development of two sublevels at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, USA, was conducted to better define rock failure mechanisms and sources of ground control hazards. Survey data included rock burst damage reports, seismic event locations and magnitudes and, for the most energetic events, first-motion information. Several subsets of this database, including large seismic events, rock bursts, and microseismic activity near the face, were analyzed. Elements of the large-event and rock burst data sets were nearly independent. That is, there was no relationship between the risk posed by a seismic event and its energy, although such a relationship is well established for the mine as a whole. All data sets showed that certain geologic features appear to control the spatial distribution of events and the spatial distribution of rock burst risk. The data also suggest that. within the scope of this study, the greatest risk of injury occurs when a pocket of heightened rock burst risk is first encountered and that this risk is controlled when miners adapt their practices to these conditions. Recognition of the role of particular geologic features in the spatial distribution of rock burst hazards provides an opportunity for anticipating, rather than only reacting to, a changing level of rock burst hazard. However, much work will be required to make good on this promise.

MARCEL R. DALY (written discussion+).-I have read with great interest Mr. W . Van Der Gracht's discussion of my paper and I fail to see where his theory contradicts mine on any fundamental point. My contention is that petroliferous accumulations are generally coincident with diastrophic deformations, synchronous with them and essentially a result of them. This implies that the causes which have led to the distortion of the strata, whatever these causes may be (thrusts, torsion, etc.), have also led to the concentration and accumulation of the hydrocarbons existing in the strata at that time. It is in this respect that both set of phenomena may be said to be related in space and in time and that we may speak of an identity of causes. It is evident that no concentration of the hydrocarbons could take place where these hydrocarbons would not exist. But whenever they do so exist, deformation will tend to concentrate them; and whenever they are found to be concentrated (or accumulated) the cause of their accumulation will have to be traced directly to distortion. I have tried to show, in some previous papers,' the probable sequence of such a mechanical process in the simple case of a series of parallel, superposed, horizontal and homogeneous layers, individually uniform in thickness, but variable in composition and resistance; and I have pointed out that the general results so obtained would harmonize with some striking features recognized in the field. But I have also stated that conditions being much more complicated in nature than in the theoretical instance considered above, a complex superposition of effects would. have to be expected as a general rule, though the leading principle would remain the same. Mr. Van der Gracht admits that the motion of the primary oil, when it has been formed, and its accumulation in adequately porous containers, if any, that would be mostly found on the front edge of the original geosynclines, would be due to the action of the mountain-building forces. Our agreement on this point seems to be complete. But Mr. Van der Gracht wants also the formation of the bituminous matter in its primary form to be coincident only with the earliest phase of the uplift, viz., after the slow geanticlinal upheaval has been completed, and the accumulation

Montana's coal reserves are estimated to be more than 120 billion tons, 24.6 percent of U.S. reserves. Montana's reserves are the largest in the nation. Coal fields are located throughout the state, primarily east of the Continental Divide. Three of the state's 17 coal fields have producing mines. Coal resources range from lignite to high volatile bituminous; however, most of the coal currently mined is subbituminous. Although Lewis and Clark mentioned the presence of coal along the banks of the Missouri River in Montana in 1805, the first major mine was not opened until 1867, at Chestnut, Montana, near Bozeman. The mine at Chestnut served Fort Ellis until the mine was bought by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883. By 1900, underground coal mining had developed throughout the state, primarily to supply fuel to the railroads. In the 1920s, large-scale surface mining began in Colstrip to fuel railroad steam engines. Currently, all coal mined in the state is produced from surface mines. The Office of Surface Mining granted the Montana regulatory program conditional approval April 1, 1980, followed by final approval February 1 1,1982. Montana's Abandoned Mine Lands Program was approved November24,1980, and its emergency program was approved August 18, 1983. A Federal Lands Cooperative Agreement was approved May 8, 1981.

THE writer of this article has not attempted to write a technical paper; on the contrary, he has tried to express in "steel-plant English," for steel men, a viewpoint drawn from his practice and experience. It is not his thought that it shall be taken as the "last word" in the making of this class of steel, or that good rimming steel cannot be made by any other practice. The paper was written to serve as the basis of a discussion from which it is hoped much benefit may be derived. The paper deals only with rimming steel made by the open-hearth process, and with the lower carbon steels, such as sheet and tin bar, rivet stock, skelp, etc., although good rimming steel as high as 40 to 50 carbon can be made by having good open slags and giving proper attention to working and tapping temperatures.

As the 2011 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2011 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 330. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a professional society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2011 Transactions is the second Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It appears solely in electronic format. The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which will better serve the mining community. Based on the feedback from the 2010 Transactions in e-book format, I believe that the transition to the all-digital format was the proper decision. The 2011 Transactions contain some of the most interesting research from the past year, including a 10-year profile of roof and rib fall trends from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a new cross-disciplinary application of the tools of epidemiology to assess and mitigate risk in coal mines . This 2011 Transactions comprise of a total of 82 technical papers (626 pages including index), including all 19 papers published in 2011 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 63) and all 32 papers published in 2011 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 28). Additionally, this volume contains 31 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 82 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2011 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.
