"Phase transitions of the potential hydrogen storage compound, ammonia borane (NH3.BH3), was investigated using Raman spectroscopy and a diamond anvil cell at high pressures up to 9.5 GPa and low temperatures down to 90K. At room temperature, ammonia borane has three phase transitions in this pressure range. Upon cooling, four new phases were discovered through changes in characteristic Raman spectra. This result provides information about the stability of new bonding characteristics of this potential hydrogen storage material at low temperature and high pressure region.IntroductionDevelopment of hydrogen technology requires the safe, efficient and environmental friendly materials for hydrogen storage and hydrides have attracted much attention as hydrogen storage media. Among chemical hydrides, ammonia borane (BH3NH3) stands out due to its high gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen density ' "". Despite high hydrogen content, this compound is very stable. It releases hydrogen in several steps by thermal decomposition in the temperature range of 100°C to 500°C. Direct thermal decomposition also causes toxic borazine emission. Recent research interests on ammonia borane include destabilizing this compound to lower the dehydrogenation temperature with an enhanced hydrogen release rate using different techniques, e.g. the nanoscaffolds'', ionic liquids"" and acid'"" or transition metal catalysts' ""'. As a molecule of ammonia borane consists of protonic (NH) and hydritic (BH) hydrogens bonded by the polarized dative bond, thermal or catalyzed decomposition requires breaking of N-H and B-H bonding. Still now, the detailed information about the bonding characteristics of ammonia borane is not sufficient to understand details about its phases and structures. The development of methods to enhance hydrogen discharge rate from ammonia borane requires a detailed study about the structural and dynamical properties that control the stability and the intermolecular interactions of this material. This study is motivated to investigate the stability of the existing phases and also to explore the existence of any new phases at different temperatures and pressures which may have enhanced hydrogen release and uptake properties."

The use of fill in deep-level gold mining presents the possibility of achieving considerable economic and operational benefits if conventional support can be eliminated. Unfortunately, the combination of the properties of tailings from gold reduction plants and the narrow, flat, tabular reefs being exploited make conventional hydraulic filling very unpractical. Laboratory tests indicate that, with careful control of water content, these tailings can provide an adequate fill material. A variety of bonding agents have been investigated, and the most practical seems to be ordinary Portland cement. Even at very low cement contents some cohesion is achieved. The design and layout for a complete fill support system using hydraulic transport, dewatering, and pneumatic placement are discussed, and a surface field trial indicated that the principles involved are correct and that acceptable results can be achieved. This system and material would completely eliminate conventional timber and brick support, and a preliminary economic analysis indicates that filling is cost competitive on a direct replacement basis. All the operations for a full-scale operation are available or have been developed to a stage sufficient to indicate that the system is practical, although certain operations require further refinement.

REJUVENATED is an apt word to apply to Chino, Kennecott's big open-pit mine at Santa Rita, New Mexico. Back in 1923 Chino was merged with Ray by an exchange of shares, and in 1926 the Ray-Chino combination was taken over by Nevada Consolidated through an issue of bonds that were traded for the Ray and Chino assets. Subsequently, of course, the whole package was acquired by the Kennecott Copper Corporation. On the basis of the terms of the Ray-Chino-Nevada exchanges, Chino was rated third in value, something less than thirty per cent of the total. In 1955 the appraisal would doubtless be forty per cent or more. But it is not only vis-a-vis Ray and Nevada that Chino has blossomed out. At the end of 1931, Chino ranked seventh among the Porphyries in point of output; whereas by the end of 1954 it was fifth,. having passed both Inspiration and Nevada Consolidated. Sharp curtailment in production in 1932-33-34 and total suspension in the two years following (see Fig. 21) found the property in a somewhat parlous position. However, the engineers had not been idle; they had been planning for the future, and in 1937 a far-reaching program of rejuvenation was launched. During the ensuing five years, capital expenditures totaled more than $8,500,000. Among the projects undertaken were the following: (1) Mine-Purchase of larger and better equipment for drilling, loading, and transporting the ore. (2) Mine-Beginning of the first systematic project to leach and recover copper in the waste dumps at the mine.

An Innovative Process for Comprehensive Utilisation of Clay-Vanadium Ores By adopting conventional processing technologies such as flotation, gravity concentration, and magnetic separation, it is difficult to enrich vanadium mineral effectively. At present, vanadium extraction process usually has not the mineral processing enrichment procedure, but rather uses direct hydrometallurgical process: roasting - leaching - precipitating vanadium for obtaining high quality V2O5 product. But it results in problems, for instance, high consume of auxiliary materials like acid and alkali, serious pollution and high cost of vanadium extraction. In the project study on the ore of a certain clay vanadium mineral, by adopting the test process: scrubbing raw ore with reagents added in - dispersing and segregating with reagents - grading enrichment, vanadium concentrate product with higher grade was made by virtue of reagent's selective inhibiting, and the purpose of upgrading the raw material used for vanadium extraction with hydrometallurgical process is achieved. The process technology obtained from project study features simple process structure, low equipment investment, low cost of mineral processing and pollution-free to environment. It provides high efficient and practical technology for the comprehensive utilisation of clay vanadium mineral, and has a prominent prospect for its popularisation and application.

Mine No. 95 is located in Harrison County about 5 miles west of Shinnston, WV, with coal properties covering the northwest corner of Harrison County and the southwest corner of Marion County and with adequate Pittsburgh seam reserves to support the mine for many years. The mine was opened in 1967 and was planned, projected and operated as a room and pillar mine. It is located on a spur branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, has rail loading facilities and shipped by rail during its development stage. In 1972 it was converted to a mine mouth power station supplier and now transports coal by conveyor belt directly to the Harrison Power Station of Allegheny Power System. In 1971 the first longwall unit was installed in a selected area of the mine and immediately an orderly system of planning was developed to overcome the restrictions associated with longwall mining. The first was the development of the technique necessary for the plugging of abandoned oil and gas wells that existed in the area. With the assistance of the Morgan- town Energy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines, this restriction was overcome and thus opened a great potential for longwall mining in northern West Virginia. Other restrictions that had to be considered for longwall planning were dwellings and other improvements, snap top zones, water courses, and adequate bleeder systems, and the handling and treatment of mine drainage. In 1975 the second longwall unit was installed and soon therefore became a total longwall mine.

The environmental repercussions following large-scale disturbance of the land surface, and the secondary effects of the disposal of waste products and effluents from mining, have not yet become apparent.

SYNOPSIS A method is described whereby finely ground glassy granulated blastfurnace slag mixed with small quantities of clay, whiting and quartz has been used for making ceramic tiles in the laboratory. The tiles were semi-dry pressed and devitrification as well as sintering occurred during firing. The properties of the resulting product compared favourably in many respects with ordinary ceramic flooring materials.

A series of numerical experiments were performed in order to elucidate the stress distribution, fracture strength and mineral liberation potential in single specimens of rock during crushing. Fracture strength was shown to reduce under eccentric loading conditions. Similarly, the presence of inclusions, both hard and soft, reduced the fracture strength. The predicted crack paths indicate that mineral liberation is unlikely to be preferential.

Spatial data processing using geographic information systems produces qualitative results which are superior to those from other existing software tools. However, the answers to various quantitative questions in mining operations is often limited by the capacity of the GIS to process appropriate spatial data. The efficient operation of a large underground mine demands that an adequate GIS be put in place.

Ruapehu is an extremely active andesitic composite volcano, built in at least four cone- building episodes over the last 250 ka. The volcano was constructed by a variety of extrusive and subplinian, strombolian, phreatomagmatic and dome-related explosive eruptions from summit, flank, and satellite vents. The volcano may be subdivided into the cone itself, of volume 110 km3, and a surround- ing epiclastic ring plain of similar size. Four facies associations can be recognised at Ruapehu,-two each on the cone and on the ring plain. Neither cone nor ring plain provides a complete record of the history of the volcano. The cone is dominated by the products of extrusive eruption, as primary pyroclastic deposits are seldom preserved, being rapidly removed by erosion from the steep water- saturated and/or snow-covered flanks of the cone. The ring plain consists of the products of mostly explosive activity forming an alter- nation of primary pyroclastic fall deposits and material transported from the cone by lahars, floods and debris avalanches and then rapidly reworked in sediment-choked hyperconcentrated Streams.

Mineral resources estimation comprises basically two stages: (i) data collection, analysis and validation, and (ii) the estimate of the grades and tones of the deposit. The most applied method for sampling survey in mineral exploration is rotary drilling with total core recovery. High drilling costs make borehole geophysical logging attractive to obtain the maximum possible information from each borehole helping to understand ore intersections, grades variability, limits of the deposits and continuity of the mineralization. In this paper, borehole geophysical logging was used to enhance the sampling survey and to derive grades indirectly (without lab analysis) with a certain amount of uncertainty. Indicator kriging (IK) was the estimation method used, as it is adequate to incorporate the uncertainty associated with the geophysical derived grade values. The results were compared to the conventional procedures using grades determined via core analysis and ordinary kriging. Borehole geophysical logging proved to be efficient to define the essential features of ore deposit and IK provided results with acceptable precision and accuracy if compared to the model provided by ordinary kriging.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of anthracite from the Mammoth and Holmes veins in Schuylkill County, Pa., as determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines laboratory separations at specific gravities of 1.50 to 1.90. The Holmes vein anthracite contains approximately 13 percent ash, and the Mammoth vein contains about 9 percent as fed to the breaker. Crushing Broken, Egg, and Stove sizes from each vein produces Pea-size anthracite of lower ash content than that contained in Buckwheat No.1 size and smaller. The Buck-wheat No.5 size has the highest ash content of all the sizes examined. Potential recovery from a mixture of the two veins as received at the breaker, separated at 1.90 specific gravity, is approximately 64 percent of the feed at 11.0 percent ash. The same materials separated at 1.80 specific gravity yield about 61 percent with an ash content of 10.1 percent. All rejects are from the Holmes vein, because the entire Mammoth material is less than 10.0 percent ash.

ALTHOUGH the first colonists in the area that is now the United States, whether Spanish, French or English in nationality, were usually keenly interested in the possibilities of mineral wealth, it is a curious and interesting fact that none of them happened upon the mineral deposits that eventually were to make this the greatest mineral-producing country; up to 1800 it would probably have been rated as rather poor in minerals. Spanish explorers traversed the southeastern United States with- out finding the Appalachian gold deposits that aroused so much interest in the early nineteenth century; Coronado sought in vain for the seven golden cities of Cibola; and the important gold deposits of California were not discovered until the political sovereignty of the region had passed from Mexico, which had held it for three centuries. The French also held Canada for nearly two centuries (and the British for another century) without finding the mineral deposits in Ontario and Quebec that now are so important. Though they knew of the copper of the Keweenaw peninsula, the lead ores of Wisconsin and Missouri, and the coal of Illinois in the seventeenth century, these deposits were all too remote for exploitation. In the area held by Great Britain, iron smelting was planned at Jamestown as early as 1619 and was actually begun at Lynn, Mass., in 1643. The industry grew slowly, at first, but had reached considerable importance before the Revolution. Commercial bituminous coal mining began about 1750 in Virginia but anthracite mining in Pennsylvania was not started until 1800. As a result there was naturally little interest in the technical aspects of mineral production here before 1800 by any except the few people who were actually engaged in it. A PAPER on this subject can cover but a limited range. A thorough visualization of the subject would contemplate a comparative analysis of haulage machines and batteries of various types; the relationship of the storage-battery locomotive to other types of mine haulage should be considered and limiting factors in each case should be carefully developed. This paper will briefly deal with these factors. So far as the writer has been able to determine, the first storage-battery locomotives for mine haulage were manufactured in 1897 or 1898 and were tried out in the Pocahontas coal field, but they were not sufficiently satisfactory to justify their continued use. Battery explosions were frequent and caused serious damage to the wiring, electrical equipment, and the clothing and bodies of the motormen. Sulfuric acid was used as the electrolyte. Experiments were then conducted with locomotives bearing reels of flexible cable through which connection between the motors of the locomotive and the trolley wire was maintained. At first, these reels were turned by hand. Later, the reels were revolved by contact with the wheels of the locomotive, being raised out of contact with the wheels, by a lever, when necessary. About 1902, the plan of operating the reel, by chain and sprocket wheels, from one of the locomotive axles, as is still the practice, was devised. The popular floating motor-driven reel had its inception in the Pocahontas fields prior to 1906. The maximum radius of operation of the reel-type locomotive is about 500 ft. (150 m.) from point of connection with trolley wire. This is ample for room work and certain entry work, but the need for a machine that would operate entirely independently of the trolley wire was so great that, with the development of the storage battery, renewed efforts were made to manufacture a successful storage-battery locomotive. About 1908, the gasoline locomotive was introduced. In spite of many objections to this type of machine for such work, the fact that hun¬dreds of these machines were purchased was proof of the need for a machine operating independently of the trolley.
