A paper on this subject can cover but a limited range. A thorough visualization of the subject would contemplate a comparative analysis of haulage machines and batteries of various types; the relationship of the storage-battery locomotive to other types of mine haulage should be considered and limiting factors in each case should be carefully developed. This paper will deal briefly with these factors. So far as the writer has been able to determine, the first storage-battery locomotives for mine haulage were manufactured in 1897 or 1898 and were tried out in the Pocahontas coal field, but they were not sufficiently satisfactory to justify their continued use. Battery explosions were frequent and caused serious damage to the wiring, electrical equipment, and the clothing and bodies of the motormen. Sulfuric acid was used as the electrolyte. Experiments were then conducted with locomotives bearing reels of flexible cable through which connection between the motors of the locomotive and the trolley wire was maintained. At first, these reels were turned by hand. Later, the reels were revolved by contact with the wheels of the locomotive, being raised out of contact with the wheels, by a lever, when necessary. About 1902, the plan of operating the reel, by chain and sprocket wheels, from one of the locomotive axles, as is still the practice, was devised. The popular floating motor-driven reel had its inception in the Pocahontas fields prior to 1906. The maximum radius of operation of the reel-type locomotive is about 500 ft. (150 m.) from point of connection with trolley wire. This is ample for room work and certain entry work, but the need for a machine that would operate entirely independently of the trolley wire was so great that, with the development of the storage battery, renewed efforts were made to manufacture a successful storage-battery locomotive. About 1908, the gasoline locomotive was introduced. In spite of many objections to this type of machine for such work, the fact that hundreds of these machines were purchased was proof of the need for a machine operating independently of the trolley.

TIGERWIN, now on CD, is a user-friendly personal computer code (running under Windows) which determines the detonation and expansion state of an explosive from its known chemical composition. TIGERWIN is intended for users in the mining and commercial explosives industry who do not routinely program or run Fortran codes. The code allows the user to open a window on the computer screen and enter the initial density and the weight percentage composition of an explosive, ingredient by ingredient. Alternatively, the code can balance the composition with one or more ingredient percentages fixed, while proportionally adjusting the others automatically to give a total of 100%. The equation of state and its parameters can be user-selected from several proven and tested versions of the BKW, the JCZ, and the ideal gas equations of state. TIGERWIN allows the user to select several options for different additional calculations, such as determining the constant volume explosion, the Chapman-Jouguet (C-J) point, the detonation Hugoniot, the expansion isentrope from the C-J point, and point calculations with selectable specific volume and temperature. Additional options include calculations of detonation data with one or more ingredients partially reacted, assuming either temperature equilibrium between reaction products and unreacted material, or keeping the unreacted material “cold” at the initial temperature. Thus the code can run both ideal and non-ideal detonation calculations. The code automatically saves the input and output files in a separate directory for future reference. The output from several calculations can be displayed and printed in the form of a comparison table. In it, the key results of up to five calculations with different explosive compositions can be compared. The results from an individual calculation can be displayed graphically and printed with expansion work, pressure, or temperature as functions of specific volume. A complete listing of the details of the calculation results, similar to those from the original Fortran Tiger calculations, can also be displayed and printed. Probably no other country or coutinent has so many rich deposits of various different minerals as Australia. Long ago in the days of my boyhood in the old land the marvellous discoveries of high percentage copper at Burra Burra, Peak Downs, Yudanamutana, and other mines, was one of the principal themes of conversation in mining circles whilst the specimens of malachite, azurite, etc, brought home by returning miners were the admiration of my boyish eyes.Later on the WalIaroo and Moonta mines still further helped to heighten the reputation of Australia as a copper-producing country. During the 21 years that the writer has been resident in the Australian colonies, other mineral deposits have sprung into prominence, and with a Mount Bischoff for tin, a Broken Hill for silver and lead, and a Mount Morgan for gold, Australia can now boast that it has had within its borders the leading mines of the world, in four different minerals, and still at least maintains that pre-eminence in gold, silver and tin. To the miner from the old land, Australian mining is at first a revelation and a wonder. In very many instances he looks in vain for the regular strike and dip of the veins he has been accustomed to'Smooth hanging and foot alls are often wanting. 'Huge irregular deposits, like those mentioned above, viz., Burra Burra, Mount Bischoff, Broken Hill, and Mount Morgan, are mysteries that will take time to fathom-if, indeed, they are ever thoroughly understood and in many a smaller deposit there is much to interest alike the professor in the college and the miner in the mine.

The modern flotation machine is the result of decades of adaptation to a changing environment. In response to falling ore grades, and rising demands, tonnages, and costs, attempts are now underway to expand machine capacity by about an order of magnitude, while at the same time maintaining metallurgical performance and if possible reducing power requirements per unit throughput. Empiricism and rule-of-thumb have guided flotation machine design and scale-up, and a current need is for the development of a fundamental understanding of the subject. Design features of current and some obsolete machines are discussed in an attempt to outline those principles of flotation machine design which are known, and to delineate topics needing investigation. Attempts are made to distinguish between essential machine features required by the physics of the process, those features resulting from speculative theories on the flotation mechanisms, and features which are essentially styling variations. Topics discussed include: flotation mechanisms; tank and impeller/ stator design and dimensions; impeller speed; aeration; power consumption; particle suspension and dispersion; capacity; correlation of design parameters and operating variables; scale-up and scale-down; materials flow; problems in machine design. Design details and operating data for several current machine families are provided in Appendices.

ALTHOUGH the element beryllium was discovered as the oxide by L. N. Vauquelin in 1797, this metallic element was not produced until about 1828, and then only as an impure powder. Thereafter the greatest single contributor to our early knowledge of beryllium was Lebeau who, in about 1899, made pure beryllium crystals by electrolysis of the fluoride and then beryllium copper by the arc-furnace reduction of beryllium oxide with carbon and copper. About twenty-five years later, under the impetus of the work done by Siemens-Halske, beryllium commenced to make relatively rapid gains in industrial importance, principally when alloyed with copper. At the present half century mark, its use is firmly established in beryllium copper and in X-ray disks of pure beryllium. Its use as a moderator in nuclear processes in piles is engaging experimental attention and might become important. Other minor uses, but increasing in interest, are in nickel-base or iron-base alloys as a strengthening agent; as a protective agent against oxidation in aluminum and magnesium-base alloys; and as a ceramic in the form of the pure fused oxide. A false start was made in the wide use of beryllium oxide as a fired fluorescent powder known as beryllium-zinc silicate, a component of the inside coating of fluorescent lamps. This application, wherein general use by the public attained some importance, was abandoned a few years ago. This action was a consequence of the uneasiness which had been generated during the past decade by the sometimes fatal health hazard to the pulmonary tract now generally attributed to beryllium and some of its compounds. Surface mining of multiple scams by mountaintop mining methodology is complex in the Appalachian region of West Virginia. Excess spoil from the removal of overburden and interburden is disposed in the adjacent valleys. The valley fills so formed are some of the largest earth constructions, with a relief of 450 ft (137 m) to 650 ft (198 m) and a stretch of 500 ft (152 m) to 2000 ft (610 m). The stability of the valley fills has become an issue of public concern. This paper describes three cases of valley fill slopes. The analysis of each case involved the description of the geo-mechanical properties of different surface and sub-surface layers, and the surface configuration of the slope. Slope stability was carried out using deterministic as well as probabilistic approaches. Based on the analysis, it was found that valley till slopes were stable due to configuration, and the premise that valley fills with great stretch and high volume of spoil tend to be unstable does not hold.

Vanadium has been produced from both primary and secondary sources having various compositions. Vanadium pentoxide and vanadium trioxide are the most available and known sources of vanadium oxides. In this paper, an overview of leaching both oxides has been reported. The problem of vanadium pentoxide leaching under acid conditions is the low solubility of the dissolved vanadium. This was investigated and then supplemented with further studies of leaching at mildly basic pH’s as well as under acid reductive leaching conditions (to form vanadium (IV)). Atmospheric oxidative leaching of vanadium trioxide was investigated using oxygen and ferric ion as the oxidant. It was shown that the leaching of vanadium trioxide using oxygen is very slow; however, ferric ion can dramatically increase the kinetics and leach efficiency.

"Feldspars used by ceramic and glass industries as fluxing agents are mainly obtained from high quality feldspar deposits. The demand for feldspar as raw material for industrial applications especially in ceramic manufactures is continuously increasing. However, due to the depletion of those deposits, the research activities related to the recovery of feldspar from the lower grade feldspar deposits and feldspar bearing rocks such as pegmatite, granite, arkosic sandstone and syenite have been intensified in the last two decade. In Bulgaria, the main deposit of arkosic sandstone is located in the area of Shumen town, NE Bulgaria. In Srednya deposit arkosic sandstones are found in Upper Cretaceous sediments (Santonian). In this formation, there are two major industrial minerals - feldspar and quartz. They may be of economic value and possibly suitable for commercial uses. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the beneficiation and upgrading processes of Srednya deposit arkosic sandstones. In a laboratory scale it was studied the possibility to obtain the feldspar concentrate and quartz sand from arkosic sandstones. Particle size distribution, chemical and mineralogical compositions of quartz-feldspar sands were determined. The bench-scale tests using the KOALIN AD laboratory experimental facilities were conducted. Many processing techniques were tested: disintegration, washing, sizing, carbonate flotation and feldspar flotation. The experimental results show that there are possibilities to obtain the silica sand with low content of Fe2O3 - below 0.02 % and potassium feldspar with content of K2O > 14 %. A new technology for recovery of feldspar and silica sand from arkosic sandstone was developed."

5. Development of Initial Probing System 5. 1 Introduction The preliminary evaluation of a variety of potential methods for initial probing showed that the optical system using closed circuit television (CCTV) and the sonar, or acoustic ranging, system were the most promising. The former is capable of pro¬viding a visual display of the mine passages in a clear, non-smoky environment, and the latter is capable of providing a map of the spatial location of the coal surfaces making up the entries, as well as objects, such as cribs, mining machines, etc., in the passages in both smoky and non-smoky environments. The sonar system used in conjunction with the CCTV in a clear environment can greatly assist in resolving the spatial distribution of objects seen on the TV screen. Further, in a smoky environment the interpretation of the sonar information could be facilitated if some visual information were also available. CCTV systems exist but require some modifications to suit this particular application. The Industrial Hazards and Communications Division of the Bureau has an ongoing program for the development of such a CCTV system. Rather than duplicate this effort in developing a CCTV system, it was decided to evaluate the possibility of utilizing their system for initial probing, while continuing with the develop¬ment of a system which would work in any environment, including the presence of dense smoke. The concept of using sonar for the initial probing of mine passages represents the application of new technology requiring development. The results of such a development effort undertaken during the course of this program are described in the following sections.

The McDermitt mine was found as a separate mercury ore-bearing occurrence approximately 305 m (1000 ft) northeasterly and in a different geologic setting from the old Cordero mine, which had been the district's major producer. The following briefly describes the discovery of the new deposit and the Placer Amex lnc. involvement. The Cordero mining property was under lease by Sierra Mineral Management from the owner Fred H. Lenway in February 1971, when the property was brought to the attention of Placer Amex Inc. (known at that time as American Exploration and Mining Co.) by Richard F. Hewlett of Sierra Mineral Management. The property was first examined by Amex geologists in the spring of 1971, who reported favorably on the project. During that year, Sierra Minerals Management had retained Dr. Larry Walters as a consultant. He proceeded to drill test mercury soils anomalies which he had found northeast of the old Cordero mine in an area overlain by recent alluvium and gravel. An area known as the D area was subsequently blocked out and ascribed a tonnage of about 18 1 kt (200,000 st) which occurs in the vicinity of the eastern edge of the currently defined McDermitt ore body. This mineralization was found in flat lying mercury-bearing lakebeds, unlike the steep structurally controlled ore which was mined in the old Cordero mine. It became apparent to Placer Amex that since the chances of much more extensive ore were good in such a geologic environment, additional exploration was warranted. A joint venture was formed in October 1972 by American Exploration and Mining Co. and Sierra Mineral Management to further explore the Cordero property. The project exploration was fully funded and managed by Amex. Sampling began by Placer Amex in the D area where an open trench had exposed the lakebed ore. Visible cinnabar could not account for the high-grade mercury assays taken from the trench, and an unknown mercury mineral was suspected. Subsequent work established the presence of a chlorine-bearing mercury sulfide which may have enriched the lakebeds as a secondary supergene mineral. Early identification of the mercury-bearing mineral corderoite (Hg3Cl2S,) aided in the geologic concepts for the ore occurrence and was helpful in exploring for the expansion of the D area. Corderoite was found occurring with cinnabar in the lakebeds, and in places it is a major contributor. Specimens of the unique ore were given to Dr. Eugene E. Foord and Dr. Pieter Berendsen at Stanford University, who subsequently identified the chemical and crystallographic makeup of the new mineral and described it for the first time as a naturally occurring substance. Metallurgical work on mercury recovery from the newly described mineral was carried out by the Placer Development Ltd. laboratories in Vancouver, and an acceptable recovery system was worked out together with a planned mill design. Step out drilling from the D area by Placer Amex Inc. encountered extensive flat lying lakebed ore. The McDermitt ore body, as subsequently defined by drilling, was found to contain 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of open pittable ore, containing approximately 5 kg/t (10 lb per st) Hg. The ore body gently dips to the north and is found lying mainly in claybeds just above an opalite breccia blanket which overlies the earlier volcanics. Some ore is also found in the opalite breccia. The mine and mill were constructed under an operating joint venture with Placer Amex Inc. and Sterling Mineral Ventures, and production began in June 1975 at the rate of 20,000 flasks per year. "An on-line technique to measure the efficiency of decoating I delacquering processes is being developed by Alcan' s Arvida R & D Centre. Decoating processes are used to remove moisture and coatings from shredded coated material such as Used Beverage Containers (UBC) before melting. Complete removal has been demonstrated to maximize metal recovery. Quantifying the weight of carbon and organic residue adhering to the shred surfaces is very difficult to measure directly, as the material can be highly folded. The technique developed indirectly measures the residue remaining by analysing the concentration of CO evolved in the decoater end zone exhaust gas.A commercial CEMS (Continuous Emission Monitoring System) incorporating an infrared type CO gas analyser was modified for on-line process exhaust gas analysis. Both pilot and plant trials had demonstrated that the CO concentration measured was inversely proportional to the efficiency of the organic removal achieved. As the quality of coated purchased scrap can be highly variable in moisture and organic content, continuous measurement should permit adjusting the feed rate and other decoater process parameters to the quality of decoating required."

Telfer is a gold/copper operation, currently operating one open pit mine and one underground mine. The ore processing plant consists of two parallel trains involving semi-autogenous mill, ball mill and crusher (SABC) grinding, flotation and leaching. Due to receiving relatively high grade underground ore for over half of its total feed, Train 1 frequently experienced cleaning circuit overloading during high production periods. This resulted in losses in recovery and ineffective concentrate upgrade. As a quick and simple solution, the Train 1 copper flotation circuit was reconfigured to send concentrate from the first two rougher cells directly to the final concentrate and return the cleaner scavenger tailings to the third rougher cell. These modifications have resulted in a 1.4 per cent increase in plant copper recovery with no change in final concentrate grade. Preliminary results also indicate gold recovery has increased by more than 1 per cent since the circuit reconfiguration. Other benefits include less spillage, more friendly circuit to operate and a more consistent metallurgical performance. Focus for the next phase of optimisation is on concentrate upgrade. A number of opportunities have been identified and are currently being investigated, including staged reagent addition, single stage cleaning of the first two copper rougher concentrates, regrinding of the remaining copper rougher concentrate prior to cleaning and process control based on a machine vision system.

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec, Canada. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1300 tpd by October 1, 1964. Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1400 tpd and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1100 tpd due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January 1968, was mainly massive sulfides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, Copper, zinc, and minor amounts of lead sulfides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (average specific gravity of 3-8). From January 1968 until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulfide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite with some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. Continental No. 1 This mine in Lisbon Valley has an orebody about 1200 ft long and varying from 250 to 70 ft wide. Average width is about 100 ft and stope heights average about 9 ft. It was developed by a 350-ft, 11º inclined shaft for trackless haulage, although a hoist and track are installed for auxiliary hoisting. Mining has been done from horizontal open stopes with random pillar support, using a HD5 tractor for mucking and a 4-wheel drive Gettman shuttle car for tramming. Slushers have been used to some extent in thin ore zones. Back support for stopes and haulage ways has been accomplished by rock bolts and landing mat. The most interesting feature of this mine has been pillar extraction. Mining was done under contract during the first year of operations with little regard for an orderly plan of stope layout or regularity of openings. Most of this work was done in the largest area of the orebody; consequently, pillar recovery has been accomplished under conditions which are far from ideal. However, a workable system has been developed which is competitive, both in cost and production rate, with open stoping.

The Mercur Dome mine is in the Camp Floyd mining district, Tooele County, Utah (fig. 1). The property lies between 6,000 and 8,000 feet altitude on the southwesterly slope of the Oquirrh Mountains, a short distance west of Mercur, the district settlement. Mining began in the Mercur area in 1870. Operations at the Mercur Dame mine were started in 1937 after several claims had been consolidated into one group. Preliminary examination of the ground by F. H. Gunnell, a Bureau of Mines engineer, disclosed the presence of vanadium in a carbonaceous shale horizon. Rocks near the Mercur Lame property are chiefly sediments of Carboniferous age, including the Madison and Deseret limestones. The main shaft penetrates the Deseret formation to a point a few feet above the 1,000-foot level where it enters the Madison limestone. The flat-lying vanadiferous shale horizon is exposed on the 1,000-foot level near the top of the Madison limestone. The Bureau of Mines development program, consisting of diamond drilling, auger hole drilling, and sampling, was planned to determine the extent and assay value of the vanadiferous bed. Seven diamond-drill holes totaling 300 feet were drilled from the 1,000-foot level of the mine. Eight hand auger holes were drilled in the back of the drift on this level (fig. 2). Assay determinations were made on 74 samples from the drill holes and supplemental channel samples and are tabulated in this report. The concluding section embodies results of metallurgical tests.

The authors present laboratory and plant results illustrating the benefits to be gained by using chemical additives, namely flocculants and surfactant dewatering aids, in the Bayer process. Advantages of synthetic flocculants over starch are illustrated in terms of more efficient solid/liquid separation in both the initial settling of blow-down slurries and in the CCD wash train. In addition, it is shown that the use of synthetic flocculants considerably reduce the levels of organic contaminants present in the process liquor. Secondly, very significant improvements in moisture removal were obtained by the application of dewatering aids to hydrate filtration/ washing operations.

"The Wasa Lake property is a block of about 1,640 acres in Beauchastel township, Quebec. Gold was discovered there first in 1936 in what is now known as the 'Southern area ( Fig. 1). Stripping and trenching were followed by 9,218 feet of diamond drilling in twenty holes. A number of good intersections were obtained, but their interpretation in terms of ore was difficult. A shaft was then sunk to 220 feet vertical depth. Thirteen hundred feet of lateral work and 543 feet of diamond drilling were completed at the 200-foot level before work was discontinued in 1938. Results up to this point had been just fair.Early in 1944, surface diamond drilling was resumed. The first hole cut material of ore grade in a strong shear zone 1,000 feet north of the old workings, and holes to the east and west showed this to be an extensive gold-bearing zone.In August 1945, a main working shaft was started. This has been sunk to 550 feet slope depth. A cross-cut at 390 feet vertical depth was driven to the ore zone and, by drifting and drilling at regular intervals, a length of 725 feet had been tested to December 31st, 1946 ( Figs. 1 and 2). The results check those from surface drilling quite closely.In the main zone, scoping widths from 8 to 40 feet and averaging about 25 feet are indicated. The grade after dilution should be about 0.15 oz. gold a ton and operation will probably start at 1,000 tons a day."

"A lot of different deep mixing systems have been developed in the last decades for a wide spectrum of applications, e.g. retaining and foundations systems, soil improvement, sealing of toxic substances or dyke strengthening. The paper will deal with special aspects of constructions with deep mixing systems for infrastructures like soil improvement for cyclic loadings and underpinnings in difficult soil conditions by presenting cases from engineering practice.1. DEEP DRY SOIL MIXING FOR SOIL IMPROVEMENT OF RAILWAY TRACKS IN VERY SOFT SOILS1.1 IntroductionRailway tracks are set into vibrations by train passing. In very soft soil this leads to long-term deformations which lead to speed limits, temporary closings and big maintenance efforts. The energy of the dynamic loading is transmitted into the soil by compression and shear waves and at the surface by rayleigh waves (Wood 1968). The expansion of the waves are influenced by•,thickness of the soft soil layer•,density of the soft soil layer•,stiffness of the soft soil layer•,saturation of the soft soil layer•,frequency of the dynamic loadingThe frequency of the dynamic loading depends on the train velocity and the distance of the wheels and wheel sets. If the frequency of the dynamic loading is in the range of the natural frequency of the soft soil layer the vibrations increase extremely (Lieberenz et al. 2003). As a result the long-term deformations will increase as well.To avoid these long-term deformations and the resulting operation restrictions and maintenance efforts an adequate soil improvement is necessary. Unplanned open stope hanging wall dilution is a significant cost for many open stope mining operations. Significant advances in empirical and analytical approaches for estimating stope dilution have been made, however, many important factors are still either ignored or assessed in purely subjective terms. There are many hard to quantify factors that simultaneously influence opening stability and dilution. This creates a significant difficulty for determining the influence of a single variable, such as exposure time, on opening stability. Open stope exposure time has been found to be one of the important factors that influences overall stope stability and dilution. A study is currently being conducted to quantify many of the factors influencing open stope dilution. The assessment of a large comprehensive case history database of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. (HBMS) operations forms the basis of this study. This paper presents the findings of a study on the influence of stope exposure time on open stope dilution. The study is based on applying existing empirical stope dilution prediction methods to the extensive HBMS database. Minimising stope mucking time has been recognised as a method to significantly reduce stope dilution. Factors which influence hanging wall dilution, such as drill and blasting methods as well as undercutting the hanging wall, have been applied to reduce the scatter in the database. Empirical design techniques based on rock classification attempt to relate opening stability to ?stand-up time?, however, these approaches have not frequently been applied to the mining industry. Data from a ?stand-up time? graph have been interpreted in terms of an equivalent average depth of hanging wall slough and compared to the HBMS database findings. To add to the existing HBMS database, several stope case histories have been taken from Geco mine. These cases include data from very large open stopes with long exposure times. Data from all three sources suggest that hanging wall slough increases between .14 and 0.3 metres per month for a rock mass Q? value between about 4 and 13.
