The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating a novel technique to control methane in underground mines by using methane oxidizing microorganisms termed methanotrophs. Coalbed methane has been responsible for many mine disasters and will continue to be a safety obstacle to mining deeper coal seams. Deeper seams of coal contain more methane gas, and better strategies for removing the methane will need to be developed. Methanotrophic microorganisms offer a novel alternative since they physically remove the methane, are commonly found in soils, and already have been found to exist in many foreign coal mines. Proposed applications of this concept include the inertization of buffer zones separating active mining areas from sealed gobs, reducing ventilation from ventilated gobs and reducing methane content from longwall gobs. Current work includes an assessment of the abundance of naturally occurring methanotrophs in U.S. mines, testing the amount of methane that various types of microorganisms can consume, studying the effects or use of the byproduct gases, and finally developing practical appl ications of this biotechnology to coal mining. This paper reports on the initial laboratory testing that measured the quantity of methane consumed by two types of methanotrophic microorganisms. Average rates of methane consumption were between 1 and 4 ml/hour in column flow tests. A possible gob application may require that 750 cfm of methane be consumed during periods of maximum outgassing. It is premature at this time to accurately scale from laboratory to mine application.

"The Campbell mill has undergone numerous changes over the past 43 years. However the rate of change has increased significantly in the last 4 years. A new grinding circuit, carbon-in- pulp circuit, pressure oxidation plant, and column flotation circuit are all new additions. Other changes have occurred in the last 2 years including a large reduction in sodium cyanide consumption, and the introduction of a computer controlled grinding circuit. More improvements are planned in the next 2 years. Some of these improvements include the construction of an effluent treatment plant, and the replacement of filtering and Merrill-Crowe precipitation with carbon-in-leach and electrowinning.Recent changes and improvements to the Campbell mill are a commitment by Campbell mill personnel and Placer Dome Inc. to decrease operating costs, increase gold recovery and gold production, improve industrial hygiene and safety, and meet environmental compliance with current government legislation.INTRODUCTIONThe Campbell Mine has been and continues to be one of Canada's premier gold mines. Campbell Mine is 100% owned and operated by Placer Dome Incorporated. Milling of ore commenced in 1949 at a rate of 300 tons/day producing 58,000 ounces per year of gold. In 1992 Campbell Mine will mill 1340 tons/day of ore at a grade of 0.6 ounces/ton, producing 275,000 ounces of gold at a cash cost of $205.00 Cdn./ounce.This paper discusses some of the changes that have been made to the Campbell mill in the past 4 years. The flowsheet has undergone extensive changes and will continue to change rapidly in the next 2 to 3 years. A simplified flowsheet of the Campbell mill is shown in figure 1."

The Centenary Distinguished Lecture was held on Thursday, 24th March, 1994 at the Convention Centre of the Sandton Sun, Johannesburg at 20:00. Herewith the proceedings that followed. P.R. Janisch: The South African Institute of Mining and Metalurgy began life one hundred years ago tonight, and eight years (almost to the day) after the 1886 discovery of gold, which has impacted so profoundly on the course of events in our country since then. The Early Years That discovery was a mater of fortune, but not in the sense of the conventional prospector's lucky strike. Canny explorers, such as the Strubens, had been around for some years and, if George Harrison had not stumbled over the Main Reef when he did, someone else would surely have done so within months. The element of luck was that the gold-bearing rocks of the Witwatersrand actually lay exposed to sight. We now know that they are something of the order of 2,5 billion years old. Rocks of that age are usually covered by younger formations. In fact, the bulk of the Witwatersrand Basin is covered by lava, dolomite, and Karoo measures. What, one wonders, would our history have been had the Karoo, which stops at the Vaal, extended no more than 60 kilometres further north. Dr H. Scot-Russell A piece of advice attributed to Paul Kruger, the who was President of the South African Republic one hundred years ago, was the following: 'Seek from the past that which is good, and build on it for the future'. It is advice that can be applied universally and, whether deliberately or not, it must have motivated my predecessors when this Institute celebrated its 40th, 50th, and 75th birthdays. Those milestones were each marked by retrospectives, as Peter Janisch has so ably presented tonight on our hundredth anniversary. The parallels do not end there. We find ourselves in times no less daunting than those our predecessors. Next month will see the birth of a new kind of South Africa; so did May 1902, May 1919, and May 1948.

INTRODUCTION Truck haulage of muck in underground mining operations has been in use around the world for many years. From the late 1.950s into the early 1970s, haulage by means of load-haul-dump (LHD) units challenged haulage by means of trucks, and, to a large degree, LHD units dominated the trackless concept of moving mate¬rial underground. However, beginning in 1975, the emphasis began to shift back to the use of trucks, with LHD units assuming the secondary role of loading the trucks. Over the years, several manufacturers have been offering trucks with capacities ranging from 4.5 to 45.4 t (5 to 50 st) and with features that specifically address the constraints of underground operation. TRUCK TYPES Three different types of trucks are available for use underground, namely the tip dumpers, telescoping dumpers, and push-plate dumpers. The following para¬graphs describe each of these three types. Tip Dumpers Tip dumpers are designed to lift the truck box, using gravity to dump the load out the rear of the box. The primary application of these trucks is in the haulage of muck to the surface. However, these trucks also may be utilized underground, if a chamber is provided to accommodate the raised truck box at the dumping point. Fig. 1 illustrates a four-wheel drive truck with a 10.0-t (11-st) capacity; this truck is only 1.9 m (6.25 ft) wide and is designed specifically to follow narrow and winding vein courses. Fig. 2 illustrates a two-wheel drive tip dumper with a 24.5-t (27-st) capacity; this truck operates on 12% grades with firm dry surfaces and in modes both loaded-up and loaded¬down. Telescoping Dumpers Telescoping dumpers specifically address the constraints imposed by low back heights, and they represent an optimization of compressed envelope size with maximum payload capacity. Figs. 3 and 4 illus¬trate a typical telescoping dumper with a capacity of 18.1 t (20 st). Fig. 3 shows the box in position for carrying the load, and Fig. 4 shows the same truck with the box in the full-dumping position. Fig. 5 illustrates the loading and dumping cycles. Fig. 6 illustrates an approximation of how an LHD unit with an eject-o-dump (EOD) bucket would be used to load over the rear of this type of truck. Fig. 6 shows a low-profile telescoping truck in the first stage of loading, with a 6.8-t (7.5-st) LHD unit equipped with an EOD bucket. A loader with a smaller capacity and a narrower bucket would allow the bucket to fit inside the truck box and would achieve an even lower loading height than that illustrated. Gen erally, an LHD unit equipped with an EOD bucket and teamed with a telescoping dump truck can be used with a lower back height than could any other front-end loader and truck team. Push-Plate Dumpers Push-plate dumpers are similar to telescoping Bump¬ers, except that they do not have the two-stage box. Instead, push-plate dumpers utilize a single push plate to discharge the load out the rear of the box. Gen erally, these units are limited to payload capacities of about 9 t (10 st). Fig. 7 illustrates a typical push-plate dumper.

"The Buffalo Ankerite mine is in the southern part of the Porcupine gold district of northern Ontario. The mine has a history of exploration and development reaching back to 1911, and has been operated continuously since 1932. From 1932 to 1942 a total of 510,874 oz. gold was produced from the mine. In 1941 the production was 71,654 oz. from 448,621 tons of ore.With few exceptions, the ore-bearing veins did not crop out. They were discovered during the prospecting of the prominent outcrops of barren or low-grade quartz-carbonate breccia near the veins.GEOLOGICAL SETTINGThe Porcupine gold district lies in an area of folded and sheared Precambrian lavas, sediments, and intrusives. The Buffalo Ankerite mine is in the southern part of a large fold. The structure appears to be a continuation of the Vipond cross anticline and accompanying syncline described in earlier papers (1, 2). The orebodies lie along both flanks of the synclinal part of the fold, and are known as the north and south vein systems, respectively. No mineable veins have been found on the axis of the syncline (Fig. 1).The rocks found in the mine area are pillow lava, dacite, conglomerate, quartz porphyry, tuff, and fragmental lava. The tuff and fragmental lava are now largely altered to chlorite schist. Productive veins have been found only in pillow lava, dacite, and conglomerate, but a minor amount of gold occurs in some of the quartz porphyry. The Porcupine Creek fault, a zone of intense shearing over 1,000 feet in width, lies immediately south of the mine. A spur fault branches to the northwest from the Porcupine Creek fault, separating the north from the south vein systems ( Fig. 1) ."

"The effect of ultrasonication on reactions at solid/liquid interfaces was investigated by using an ultrasonic probe in two slurry systems, i.e. cyanidation of a refractory sulphide ore and geopolymerisation of metakaolinite. The surfactant dithiophosphate was used to render the gold bearing sulphide particles hydrophobic, in an attempt to induce the formation of cavitation bubbles directly at the desired surfaces. Oxygen was injected into the cyanidation system to improve the attachment of oxygen bubbles to the hydrophobic sulphide surfaces. Geopolymerisation occurs in highly alkaline solution with waste aluminosilicate oxides and silicates as the reactants. The process of geopolymerisation is believed to involve dissolution of Al-Si oxides from solid particles, diffusion of dissolved Al-Si complex from the solid surface into the gel phase, condensation of gel phase and hardening of the gel phase. It has never been investigated how ultrasonication affects the above steps in synthesising geopolymers, despite a number of papers dealing with sonochemical synthesis of materials. The introduction of power ultrasound into such slurry systems is expected to result in advanced geopolymer materials.In the cyanidation of the pyrite concentrate, the kinetics of gold extraction were significantly enhanced in the presence of ultrasound, due to the prevention of passivation and the enhanced dissolution of sulphides. Cyanide consumption was significantly reduced with ultrasonication, owing to the oxidation of soluble sulphides to sulphate, minimising the cyanide consumption by sulphides. With oxygen injection, ultrasound significantly enhanced the leaching of gold from the pyrite concentrate, as oxygen could enhance the formation of the oxidation radicals by ultrasonic cavitation. In the presence of dithiophosphate, ultrasound further improved gold leaching in the oxygen-aerated system. Dithiophosphate could selectively adsorb at gold host sulphide surfaces, and make the surfaces hydrophobic. As a result, the ultrasonication effectiveness could be enhanced through forming cavitation bubbles directly at the interfaces."

In considering the architectural design of the group of buildings which make the surface workings of a mine, the variety of function of the buildings is the most outstanding feature. It falls to the architect to unify the group in a manner which still expresses the function of the individual buildings. In achieving this, many perspective studies were made at an early stage and as the area was developed, a scale model was produced initially for design study purposes and later completed as a model of the final development.

THE opinion has been widely held that the corrosion of alpha brass occurs by the selective solution of zinc. As late as 1939, Fink1 and Evans2 suggested that in the initial stage of the corrosion the selective solution of zinc produces copper-rich areas, which subsequently act as cathodes that facilitate the deposition of copper. Previously Abrams3 had shown that most of the copper found on corroded brass was redeposited and not residual, although he did not consider the nature of the initiation of the corrosion process. Enough data exist to indicate that any metal surface is sufliciently heterogeneous to provide the anodes and cathodes necessary for the initiation of corrosion .4,5 Thus, for alpha brass we need postulate not an initial selective solution of zinc, but only the existence of local differences in electrochemical potential. The heterogeneity responsible for potential differences may arise from oxide and other films as well as from alloy concentration gradients. Even though selective corrosion may be possible in some alloy systems, previous data on alpha brass as well as the experimental work reported in this paper do not require this supposition. Bengough and May,6 in a discussion of Abrams' paper, first suggested the addition of small amounts of arsenic (0.03 per cent) to alpha brass to prevent the redeposition of copper (dezincification). This suggestion was later substantiated by Nixon.7 In their studies of the inhibiting influence of arsenic, Evans and Fink were led to the selective-solution hypothesis in order to explain the initial corrosion of such alloys. In many mining operations, the truck and loader equipment represents the bulk of the invested capital and the majority of the mine operating cost. The profitability of these mines is therefore critically linked to the efficiency of the truck and loader operations. The various factors which affect the productivity of trucks and loaders are analysed by computer simulation, and the results presented in a form allowing assessment of the importance of each factor on overall productivity.

Pulmonary inflammation is accompanied by increased microvascular permeability and leakage of plasma into alveolar spaces. Serum has been shown to affect superoxide (O2-) production from pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) in vitro, and in some cases serum has been shown to be necessary for stimulation of PAM. An electro-optical method was used to measure O2- production from single PAM by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH2) from videorecorded images of individual cells. PAM were stimulated by their initial attachment to culture dishes independent of serum. The addition of 2% serum to the culture medium increased NBTH2 production during attachment, whereas concentrations of 5 and 10% serum had no additional effect. In contrast, PAM incubated for 2 hrs could not be stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) or zymosan particles to produce O2- unless serum was present during the incubation and/or stimulation; however, NBTH production was similar in all cases of serum addition. Also2, serum alone did not stimulate adherent PAM indicating that serum is necessary but not sufficient for stimulation of attached. PAM. These results suggest that changes in microcirculatory permeability may have a pronounced effect on superoxide production by PAM and that serum may help regulate or condition these cells during inflammation of the lung. A major problem whose importance touches the entire underdeveloped world is how to reconcile the demands of nationalism with the requirements of the international economy. Chile's copper industry presents a study of how one such accommodation has been slowly, if precariously, evolved. The dependence of a low-income country on the international economy presents, on the one hand, opportunities for speeding up the rate of development and, on the other, imposes a set of constraints on national behavior. Nationalism may be indispensable in motivating low-income countries to bear the economic costs and absorb the social changes involved in modernization, but it may also inhibit the acceleration of economic growth by its failure to come to terms with the international economy. Nationalism is a two-edged sword. An outstanding feature of Chile's economy since the mid-1920s has been its considerable dependence on the export of a single primary commodity- copper. Moreover, the affiliates of two US.-owned firms-the Anaconda Co. and the Kennecott Copper Corp.-have dominated Chile's copper industry, a fact which from time to time has posed conflict between that nation's long-range economic opportunities and more immediate political realities.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore initiated a program in January 1995 at the Mt Whaleback operation in Newman, Western Australia to develop a closure plan for the overburden storage areas (OSA), which have the potential to generate acid rock drainage. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long-term performance of OSAs with respect to slope stability, surface run-off, erosion, water infiltration and vegetation. The objective is to control acid rock drainage by preventing moisture movement into and through the OSA material. Infiltration to the underlying OSA material and closure costs are minimised due to the presence of the run-of-mine (ROM) cover material. A summary of the field data is presented to illustrate low percolation rates to the underlying OSA and key performance characteristics of the moisture store and release cover system design. Field data collected to date demonstrates that a moisture store and release cover system constructed with suitable ROM material has good potential as a final cover system at the Mt Whaleback site. The performance of the cover system on a sloped surface was significantly different as compared to placing the cover system on a horizontal surface.
