Evaluation of acid drainage risk from spent (leached) ore in arid climatic zones consists of two components: (1) whether residual and secondary minerals will release acid and metals when exposed to rainfall, and (2) whether ambient rainfall is likely to infiltrate, and eventually impact surface or ground water resources. The risk of acid drainage from spent ore at the El Abra on-off copper leach pad operation was evaluated using conventional geochemical methods and unsaturated flow models. Although geochemical testing indicated poor quality water would result from any seepage, unsaturated flow modeling demonstrated that infiltration and seepage were unlikely given the arid climatic conditions. Modeling further demonstrated that the residual moisture content of the spent ore when it is removed from the leach pad controls the risk of seepage. To further reduce the risk of seepage, operational controls were developed and implemented at the El Abra site.

The physiochemical properties and industrial uses of the clay mineral montmorillonite are reviewed. Montmorillonite is the most abundant species of the smectite clay mineral group and is the predominant mineral composing bentonite deposits. The crystal structure, chemical composition, exchangeable ion type, and small crystal size are responsible for several unique properties, including a large chemically active surface area, a high cation exchange capacity, and interlamellar surfaces having unusual hydration characteristics. The type of exchangeable ion, sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and/or magnesium (Mg), has a major influence on industrial and chemical uses of montmorillonite because of their hydration characteristics. Natural occurrences of Na mont¬morillonite in commercial quantities are geographically limited, but Ca-Mg montmorillonite deposits are known worldwide. Foundry, well drilling, pelletizing, and civil engineering constitute the major uses of montmorillonite, but the total array of uses exceeds that of any other mineral.

Accurate mechanical and geological information of the roof strata is vital for roof bolting design in underground mines. In order to obtain such information in a timely manner, a research has been under way to develop a technology for mapping the roof geology using the drilling parameters acquired during the roof bolting operations. In this paper, a systematic approach has been proposed for determining the rock strengths using the acquired real-time drilling parameters. A computer simulation program based on the mathematic model has been developed to verify the approach and to study its sensitivity. The method has been used to interpret the acquired drilling data.

Oxide gold reserves are being rapidly depleted, especially in regions with long histories of gold mining, such as the Black Hills of South Dakota. However, these districts often have substantial additional deposits, where gold is refractory. It is not amenable to traditional cyanide extraction due to the presence of sulfide minerals that encapsulate or otherwise preclude the economic extraction of the gold. Several technologies have been developed to render refractory sulfide deposits amenable to traditional cyanide processing. These include roasting and pressure autoclaving. Unfortunately, these oxidation processes require substantial capital investment and incur significant operating costs. Microorganisms that obtain energy for their life processes by the oxidation of iron sulfides can be used to treat gold-bearing refractory sulfide minerals. As the bacteria convert the sulfide to sulfate, they expose any gold associated with the sulfide matrix. This makes the gold amenable to cyanide extraction.

"In 1999, PFC measurements were carried out at Alcan smelters as part of a large measurement campaign led by the Canadian Aluminium Association. Side worked prebake (SWPB) and horizontal stud Söderberg (HSS) plants in Arvida were the selected sites. CF4 and C2F6 emissions were measured continuously in the exhaust duct and at the roof vents for a week. In parallel, voltages from four designated cells were recorded at a high scan rate. Results were analyzed and correlations between voltage, anode effect duration and PFC emissions were tested. Some fundamental anode effect mechanisms were proposed and validated with the observations. IntroductionFollowing the international agreement reached within the scope of the Kyoto protocol, voluntary partnerships have been established in many countries especially for the aluminum industry. It is well known that the PFCs that are periodically emitted during aluminum production are the major source of fluorocarbon emissions. The latter are part of the greenhouse gases. In the fall of 1999, Alcan announced that it will adopt, promote and regularly renew a long-term greenhouse gas management commitment at all of its facilities within the framework of the so-called TARGET program that was implemented during 2001. The program is intended to produce on-going reductions, which will be reported publicly on an annual basis.Improvements in the understanding of the mechanisms leading to PFC emissions will contribute to targeting the most appropriate reduction actions. PFC measurement campaigns have been driven toward this end. The first measurement campaign was conducted in 1993 in order to get a picture of the emissions and a base line. The last measurement campaign was conducted in 1999 and its main objective was to compare current emissions with those measured in 1993 and to confirm the accuracy of the predictive equations for the calculation of PFC emissions. This campaign has been conducted by the Canadian Aluminium Association and measurements were made in plants using different technologies. Results of this campaign have already been reported by Bouchard et al. (2001)."

The operation of mobile mining equipment near the crest of stockpiles and wastedumps is a potentially hazardous practice which often results in localized slope failures. A limit plasticity approach to determine the total admissible weight for moving loads near slope crests is presented. A three-dimensional analysis provides an upper bound solution to the load that can be applied to the top of the slope (dump point), and it also provides the critical distances of the load from the slope crests. The analysis accounts for the inertial forces generated by the deceleration of a moving load (e.g., a dump truck), and it also includes the drag resistance of the front wheels if the brakes are engaged. The results can be utilized to determine the safe operating distances for mobile equipment from the slope edge. This presentation will discuss the application of limit plasticity to the development of the local three-dimensional collapse mechanism. An example with realistic parameters also will be presented.

IT is unnecessary to review much of the literature on hydrogen embrittlement of steel since several excellent reviews and bibliographies exist.1-3 Hot acid pickling and cathodic charging have been known to cause hydrogen embrittlement of steel and have been used as laboratory methods to charge steels with hydrogen.4-8 Experimental Procedure The problem of prime concern in all instances, except in the work of Sims and coworkers,10 is that at no time was there a definite known hydrogen value reported which could be related to a particular value of the degree of embrittlement. It was the purpose of this research to determine the relationship between hydrogen content and degree of em-brittlement quantitatively. The 1020 stock used for the specimens was hot-rolled 7/16 in. diam rod of the following analysis: 0.19 pct C, 0.40 pct Mn, 0.012 pct P, 0.036 pct S' Vacuum-fusion analyses for nitrogen and oxygen gave 0.014 pct O2 and 0.0011 pct N2. Cathodic charging was used to cause embrittle-ment. The advantages of this method were that no quenching was necessary, the impregnation was reasonably controllable, and representative samples for analysis could be prepared simultaneously with the charging of the tensile bars. Analyses for hydrogen were made in a vacuum-fusion type of apparatus which extracted gas from the samples by fusion in a molten tin-iron bath' This apparatus, which has recently been described in detail elsewhere, will not be discussed here.". " Consecutive samples can be analyzed every 15 min with an accuracy of 0'03 ppm. A A from an electrolytic or pickling bath can be charged for analysis in about 3 min, and analysis completed in 15 min. Samples of as-received 1020 stock were analyzed and found to contain a negligible amount of hydrogen (0.06 ppm). Preliminary pickling and electrolytic charging gave highly variable results. Cold-worked samples showed higher values but ranged from 0.6 to 6.0 ppm of hydrogen. Charging at 90°C gave higher values of charged hydrogen, but troublesome films on many of the specimens resulted. It was not until a few drops of a catalytic poison, prepared from 2 g of yellow phosphorus dissolved in 40 ml of carbon disulphide,8 was added to the electrolytic cell that fairly consistent high values of hydrogen could be charged into the as-received 1020 steel at room temperature. The cell used is sketched in fig. 1. The anode and fixture for the tensile specimens were fastened to the cell cover as shown, and the specimen was screwed in place, centrally located with respect to the anode. At first, anodes of lead and graphite were tried, but they contaminated the electrolyte and gave a slight deposit on the specimen. Later, a platinum wire was used in the form of a uniform helix. A current of 2 amp, corresponding to about 0.5 amp per sq in. of cathode, was used for most specimens. The electrolyte was 4 pct H2SO4 solution. Fig. 1 shows the form of the special tensile bar, the main portion of which was an ordinary 1/4 in. diam, 1 in. gauge length test bar, except that two to four small cylinders of stock were left attached by small links to the bottom end of the tensile bar for the purpose of providing samples for hydrogen analysis. Thus the bars and samples were charged with hydrogen simultaneously and an analysis could be made while the bar was being tested mechanically. Experiments were performed to determine how representative the test cylinders were of the middle of the test bar proper. While the bar center was being analyzed, the small cylinder was stored in dry ice, since it had been shown that such storage prevents loss of hydrogen for many hours.12 The results of these checks are shown in table 1. The checks are very good (0.3 ppm) and indicate that it is permissible to use the small end cylinders to establish the hydrogen content of the tensile test bar proper-

"The gas sorption and emission characteristic of coals are important to the planning and conduct of mining operations. Methane drainage from coal strata can also provide a supply of fuel in certain circumstances. Gas emissions have also created hazards during the handling and transport of coals and the release of gas also appears to be related to the yield of fine sizes during mining and processing operations.This paper summarizes studies at the University of Alberta on the permeability and gas emission of certain bituminous coals. Permeability of 'solid' samples was found to be drastically reduced by confining pressure. An emission index, .P, which has been related to outbursting behaviour of coals, has also been related to the proportion of fine s in cleaning plants. Gas sorption isotherms are dependent on temperature, moisture content, the gas involved and the type of coal and can be approximately expressed by the Langmuir or the Freundlich equations. Sorption values in sections taken across a given seam were similar but considerable differences were found in . P indices in the different coal layers of a seam.IntroductionThe emission of gases, especially of methane, from coal has been a subject of great interest (and sometimes a matter of life and death), to those who dig and handle coal since it was first mined from underground pit s. "SINCE I received and accepted your invitation to present to this meeting a paper on A Canadian Integrated Coal and Steel Industry, I have given the subject a great deal of intensive study.Two conclusions have emerged from my considerations: first, that the subject should be dealt with by a person having a firm grasp of its technical aspects; and second, that it is a subject which requires expert analysis of the complicated problems it presents in pure economics.A third conclusion inevitably results from the two just mentioned -namely, that the mantle of the prophet which has been draped up-on my shoulders is too large for me to wear, because I am neither a practical nor a theoretical coal and steel man; and I am not an economist.With the warning that I have discovered, and am keenly conscious of, the inadequacy of my background for the task, I shall attempt to place before you those aspects of my subject which appear to high-light it from a layman's point of view.In the first place, in .order to avoid confusion as between my audience and myself, some definition of terms may be required.As I interpret it I am discussing -a coal and steel industry, using the last word in the generic and not the unit sense, self-sufficient in the provision of all its needs from within the geographical limits of Canada.Now, I start with the proposition that, in the very broadest aspects of such a concept, the Corporation of which I happen to be the executive head meets my definition as a combination of operations resulting in one fully integrated unit of a coal and steel industry."

LAVES and Wallbaum' have described TiRu and TiOs as having the same structure as TiFe; they had previously described the latter compound as having the CsCl structure. On the other hand, a careful investigation of the structure of TiFe by Duwez and Taylor- ailed to reveal the ordered CsCl structure, finding instead a random arrangement of titanium and iron atoms on the points of a body-centered-cubic space lattice. Consequently, it is not clear whether Laves and Wallbaum proposed the ordered or the disordered structure for TiRu and TiOs. In order to settle this question as to the structural type and to obtain values of the lattice para- meters (thereby completely determining the structures), the present investigation was undertaken. Samples having the compositions TiRu and TiOs were weighed out accurately from iodide titanium supplied by the New Jersey Zinc Co., ruthenium powder from Goldsmith Brothers Smelting & Refining Co., and osmium powder from Wildberg Brothers Smelting & Refining Co. No analysis was made of any of these metals. According to the respective analyses of the suppliers, total impurities amount to less than 0.03 pct in the titanium and to less than 0.5 pct in the osmium. The purity of the ruthenium is not known. The alloys were prepared by arc melting in a furnace of the type described by Schramm, Gordon, and Kaufmann.9 pecimens for X-ray diffraction were obtained by crushing the ingots and passing the resulting powders through a 200 mesh screen. "This paper describes a series of wear-resistant ceramic materials which have been successfully used in the mineral processing industry in Canada. Applications include use with metallic ores, coal, potash and asbestos, and in other processes where wear degradation is of major concern. The paper will also deal with considerations involving the selection of the different ceramic materials available. It will cover the installation of ceramic materials on support structures under varying process ' conditions, as well as the other physical and chemical factors which have to be taken into account.IntroductionIn the mineral processing industry, large volumes of ores tailings and other materials are handled. The abrasive nature of most of these materials results in extensive wear to both handling and processing equipment.Wear ratios versus cost, production losses due to down time and wear-resistant material suitability for a given application all demand particular attention when viewed against the need for increased efficiencies in existing processes. As a consequence, a very active continuous search for materials with improved wear resistance has been carried out for many years.In this search, starting about 20 years ago, dense ceramic materials were tested and evaluated in certain applications, notably in the iron ore and asbestos operations in Eastern Canada. As a result of substantially better performance both in continuous extended life and ultimate economics realized , wear-resistant ceramic applications developed progressively in many other processing applications, replacing traditionally used materials.In the vast majority of wear-resistant ceramic applications, considerable extended life over previously used materials was established. This invariably was not just a fractional increase but, in most cases , in factors of double, triple and often all the way up to 18 and 20 times the life of alternative materials used previously. In certain applications, extended life could not be measured and appears to be indefinite.Obviously, as a result of such experiences, the progressively wider use of wear-resistant ceramic materials is now an established trend."

Simultaneous dissolution of mercury along with gold occurs during cyanidation of gold ores. A method has been found for the efficient removal of mercury from the gold cyanide solution by treating with dithiocarbamates which form stable compounds with mercury. The mercury concentration in the leach solution can be brought down to low levels by adopting this treatment. Furthermore, it is also possible to stabilize the mercury in the ore heap itself by addition of this reagent so that mercury does not dissolve in the cyanide solution during heap leaching. Only trace amounts of mercury were detected in the pregnant solution obtained from a heap treated with dithiocarbamates. In this paper, process parameters are discussed in detail.

"The high-magnetization microspheres of Fe3O4 encapsulated with S1O2 and T1O2 layers (Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2) were prepared. The microspheres were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. These high-magnetization microspheres could be readily dispersed by shaking whereas they could be rapidly separated from the aqueous solution simply by applying an external magnetic field. The two shells of S1O2 and T1O2 protected the iron oxide well and the microspheres were stable in acid and base solutions. Therefore, they have a good potential for the enrichment of phosphopeptides or photocatalytic activity. They could also be used to remove metal ions from waste water.IntroductionSolid-phase extraction (SPE) is the most commonly used separation technique for its simplicity, consumption of small volumes of organic solvent, and the ability to achieve a higher enrichment factor. The quest for new adsorbents is an important factor in improving analytical sensitivity and precision in SPE techniques. To date, many novel adsorbents, such as nanometer-sized materials, carbon nanotubes, mesoporous materials and magnetic nanoparticles have been employed in SPE.Magnetic polymeric microspheres, an interesting advanced composite material, have received increasing attention in the past few decades because of their unique physical and chemical properties and their potential for use in applications in various fields [1]. Magnetic microspheres consisting of an iron oxide core and a silica shell have attracted particular attention for their unique magnetic response, low cytotoxicity, and chemically modifiable surface. The core-shell magnetic silica microspheres have shown great potential in the fields of biotechnology and biomedicine for applications such as cell labeling and separation, enzyme and protein separations, targeted drug delivery, and magnetic ferrofluids hyperthermia."

"Since many years, the Yvan-Vézina gold plant custom mills and processes different ore types that show different behaviors. Because of this, cyanidation control is more complex than for a typical milling operation. In 1992, a Cyancor™ on-line « free cyanide » analyzer has been installed for monitoring and optimizing cyanidation. This implementation significantly reduced cyanide consumption for the overall cyanidation process. In order to further reduce cyanide costs, an automatic control strategy has been implemented to decrease fluctuations of« free cyanide » from their set points.This paper outlines the major steps of the project: process control audit, control strategy development, implementation and running-in period. Control strategy features include data filtering modules, adaptive PID algorithm and set points management modules are also presented. Finally, the strategy efficiency is illustrated with load-disturbance responses.IntroductionLocated in northwestern Quebec, the Yvan-Vézina plant has an average capacity of 1300 t/d using carbon-in-pulp technology. In 1991, the Yvan-Vézina gold plant was processing three types of ores (Beauchemin, Mouska and Silidor mines) and a pyrite concentrate (Beliveau mine). A cyanide reduction program was then undertaken to reduce « free cyanide» fluctuations <6>. To reach this objective, the optimum cyanide concentration was determined for each ore, a continuous monitoring method with the Cyancor™ on-line analyzer was developed and a tighter control of cyanide addition was applied. These modifications to the leaching practice significantly reduced cyanide consumption.After a while, it was observed that regulation of « free cyanide » concentrations could still be improved by the use of an automatic control strategy. Yvan-Vézina and CRM began collaborating in 1995 to develop and implement such a strategy. Results show that main disturbances of the circuit (e.g. ore mineralogy and pulp feed rate) can be significantly overcome in order to reduce their effects on the leaching operation."
