Although these exhibit similar structures overall, there are more acute valuation problems in alluvials. Most of this description will therefore be about alluvials with comments on bedded vis-a- vis alluvial deposits where necessary. Although geological comments refer mainly to lateritic deposits the method of valuation described applies to all bedded deposits, e. g. coal, limestone, phosphate. In general, the more a deposit suffers alteration during or after its formation and the more the sampling process disturbs its material, the greater the difficulties of valuation. Emphasis is laid on structure, as in any kind of deposit valuation cannot proceed until its structures are understood. Not all the structures found in alluvials will occur in bedded deposits, of course.

The development and optimisation of mill discharge trommels, and specifically their screen panels, can be a neglected area in the complex operation of a minerals processing plant. Trommels are often seen as a ‘set and forget’ component of the circuit, even when significant improvements in design are possible. A redesigned trommel and panel arrangement has simplified and added flexibility to the plant shutdown schedule at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville Gold Mine in Central Victoria.Prior to the trommel redesign, the shutdown frequency was determined by the expected life of trommel panels at 14 weeks. Planning downtime around this item led to higher maintenance costs and wastage in other areas of the plant. This was particularly disruptive with respect to mill lining change-outs, which were forced out of sequence and often changed prematurely. Fosterville Gold engaged Metso Australia Limited to propose a new trommel design that would better suit the site. The new trommel was engineered to balance simplicity with performance, and incorporated the latest in Modular trommel design, modelling and Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA). Modular Panels and Spiral Segments achieve significantly longer life, and allow in-situ panel change outs, flexibility in spiral and dam positioning and an improvement in classification performance. Trommel panel life has significantly increased from 14 to 71 weeks in the trommel’s highest wearing zone. The new design has eliminated some risks to safety by reducing manual labour and lifting requirements during shutdowns. There is greater flexibility with respect to shutdown requirements. The site is no longer at the mercy of trommel panel lifespan, which allows for better optimisation of wear components in the circuit. CITATION:Pyke, J D, Katov, K and Ciutina, S T, 2018. Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on longwall mining in the United States. Part one was published in the December 2005 issue of ME (pp. 21-26). It provided a history of longwall coal mining in the United States. It also discussed the technology involved in the productivity gains and operational improvements. Boyd anticipates that U.S. coal production will increase by 61 Mt (67 million st) (6 percent) from 2004 to 2010. A combination of higher surface and underground mine production will be required to meet the projected market demand. Boyd’s projections of coal production by major mining methods are shown in Table 1.

"Résumé - Cette étude porte sur l'altération de la matière organique et des argiles dans les boues carbonatés dévoniennes du facies ""F' de la Formation de Pine Point et ses équivalents stratigraphiques la Formation d'Evie et l'unité bitumineuse de la base de la Fonnation de Hom River. La matière organique se compose principalement de bituré solide et de quelques fragments de fossiles (organaclastes). La majorité des échantillons ne renfement que de l'illite et des inter-stratifiées illite/smectite.Si on compare les températures d'homogénéisation (Th = 100°C) des inclusions fluides de la sphalérite et des dolomites associées a la minéralisation aux températures estimées à partir de la réflectance de la collinite (84°C à 117°C), l'on ne peut pas conclure à la présence d'une anomalie thermique dans le district minier de Pine Point. De plus, la réflectance des organoclastes n'est pas plus élevée dans le district minier de Pine Point que dans les localités plus éloignées des gites. L'analyse des minéraux argileux conduit à la même conclusion: aucune anomalie thermique n'est décelable dans les unités échantillonnées à l'intérieur du district minier de Pine Point quelque soit l'indicateur utilisé.La kaolinite et la matière organique altérée, affichant des valeurs anomales de sa réflectance, se trouve essentiellement en présence de soufre et de sulfures. Cela suggère une origine authigène de la kaolinite et une altération de la matière organique reliées au phénomènes de minéralisation.Abstract - The alteration of organic matter and clays is studied in the Devonian Pine Point Formation carbonate muds, ""F"" facies, and its lateral equivalents the Evie Formation and the bituminous unit at the base of the Hom River Formation. The organic matter is mainly composed of solid bitumen with few fossil fragments (organoclasts). Most samples contain only illite and mixed layer illite/smectite.If we compare the Th (100°C) from fluid inclusions of sphalerite and dolomites associated with mineralization to the temperatures calculated from the reflectance (Ro) of the collinite (84°C to 117°C), we cannot detect a thermal anomaly in the Pine Point mining district. This result is based on the reflectance values of organoclasts from the mining district that are not higher than those reflectance values measured on organic matter (OM) away from the ore deposit. A similar conclusion is reached from the clay study: none of the parameters used allow us to identify a thermal anomaly in the samples from the mining district.The kaolinite and the altered OM showing anomalous Ro values mainly occur with sulfides and sulfur. This association suggests an authigenic origin for the kaolinite and an alteration of the OM due to the mineralization events."

An experimental and numerical study was conducted on the geomechanical behaviour of oil sands during penetration tests in which a steel wedge with an apex angle of either 20 degrees or 30 degrees was forced into compacted oil sands. The boundary conditions simulated in the laboratory tests are similar to shovel penetration into oil sands. The objective of the laboratory tests was to measure the force required to push a steel wedge into compacted oil sands. A wedge penetration test differs from conventional triaxial tests in that much more shear is generated. The laboratory data was needed to improve calibration of micro-mechanical input parameters for a two-dimensional discrete element model of oil sands constructed with Particle Flow Code (PFC). Initial model calibration was performed with triaxial test data and then a PFC model of the wedge penetration test was constructed. The measured force-displacement behaviour of the steel wedge was compared with PFC modelling results. It was found that different combinations of PFC particle and bond parameters could equally well replicate the laboratory triaxial compression data for bitumen-rich oil sands. When the wedge model was run, it was found that the resulting force required to penetrate the wedge into the oil sands was about four to six times higher than that measured. This clearly indicates that further research is required to improve the predictive capability of PFC models of oil sands.

The miner's seismic source strength can be approximately estimated on the basis of a single force acting in an infinite medium. Because of the uncertain- ty involved in estimating the amount of conversion from mechanical energy to seismic energy, the source strength thus estimated may be in error by as much as a half-order of magnitude. Calculations of wave transmission must take into account geometrical spreading, dissipation of energy by internal friction, and energy partition due to reflection and refraction of waves impinging on inter- faces in the layered earth. Theoretically derived peak-to-peak particle velocities in microinches per second (PIPS) are given for two models ; viz: (i) 50-feet thick and (ii) 100- feet thick 4000 ft/sec layers with Q = 20, overlying a half-space of 10,000 ft/sec material with Q = 5O;for the cases .of a hammer blow and a timber impact, at the frequencies of 50 Hz and 100 Hz. Comparison of the theoretically derived peak-to-peak particle velocity with experimental data taken at the Copper Queen Mine indicates that the theoretical particle velocity may be overestimated. A discussion of the distortion of seismic wavefronts by mine tunnels indicates that it is unfavorable to use a seismic source impact on the floor of the tunnel, since deceptive delays in arrival time are liable to occur at the surface. A program of parallel theoretical and experimental work is required to clarify uncertainties still associated with the nature and strength of the miner's seismic source signal which cannot be resolved within the approximations of this work. Its major components include theoretical investigations of the (1) Wave diffraction and scattering of an impact source on a face of a cylindrical cavity. (2) Impact of an elastic object on an elastic medium.

6.1 Summary This report deals with the investigation carried out to select, test, and implement a method of evaluating coal deposits and reserves. Cognizance is taken of the inherent characteristics of coal and the legislation covering aspects of health, safety, environment, and ecology applicable to the coal mining industry. Further, the method is computerized and provides information that is meaningful and readily available to other programs and sub¬systems within the concept of the Master Design Simulator. The Geology and Reserves Sub-system interface with the total system is provided by a geological data library which is structured to hold and make accessible all the data required by the system. The output from the program is accurate and useful to users with a wide variety of computer experience, knowledge, hardware and storage capacity. Additional progress in comminution can be achieved if the compressive crushing principle commonly used at present is changed to one where particles are fragmented by the tensile growth of preexisting internal flaws or cracks, under internal waterjet pressure. This idea was studied in a number of tests and generated results and conclusions are the subject of this paper. It covers tests with different jets imposed on rock samples during compressive load as well as without any loading.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers extends an invitation to members of the Institute to participate in an exceedingly interesting excursion on Saturday, November 11. Permission has been secured for a visit to the plant of the Electric Boat Co. at New London, Conn. There will be run a special-test on a high-power 8-cylinder, 4-cycle Diesel engine. A large number of submarine and other engines in various stages of construction will be seen, also the boring of torpedo tubes, cylinders and other equipment for submarines. The drafting rooms and foundry mill also be open for inspection. The party will have an opportunity to see at close range the submerging of several submarines, and an attack on a vessel on the surface, an exhibit which is being arranged by courtesy of Rear Admiral A. "The size of off-highway trucks has increased substantially over the last decade, bringing about a radical change in truck maintenance practices and procedures. As a result, surface mine maintenance mechanics today are faced with the increased hazards of working with larger and heavier tools and components and doing repairs at greater heights, thereby exposing them to a high potential for serious injury or death. Not surprisingly, the number of accidents involving truck maintenance mechanics is significantly increasing.The Bureau of Mines has assessed the haulage truck maintenance safety problem, analyzing maintenance-accident data over the 7-yr period, 1978- 84, in terms of personnel, job activities, truck components and systems, tools involved, and truck design. This assessment, based on the review and interpretation of 1,225 haulage truck maintenance accident reports, identified major factors contributing to these accidents. Overall, young, inexperienced workers are involved in most accidents. A typical maintenance accident involves a male mechanic under 33 yr old, with less than 5 yr job experience. INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, surface mine maintenance and repair operations have changed radically. The number of maintenance personnel has grown along with the hazards of working with larger and heavier components at greater heights and with larger and heavier tools. Furthermore, transfer of skills from over-the-road vehicle mechanics is not as feasible as it once was, because of the ever increasing size of mining equipment and the complexity of its design. In short, surf ace mine equipment maintenance and repair has become increasingly sophisticated as well as labor intensive, necessitating further research and evaluation in terms of both safety and efficiency (1, 7-8) 2"

The president and US Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt continue to bypass Congress in their efforts leave an environmental legacy when they leave office in a year. Slurry walls, also known as diaphragm walls, are commonly used as temporary and/ or permanent support of excavation for construction of shafts in soft ground. Through case history, this paper demonstrates economical benefits of disregarding long-term structural contribution of the slurry walls particularly in severe environmental condition. In addition, for temporary slurry wall shaft systems, possibility of using steel fiber, synthetic fiber or additives in lieu of temperature/shrinkage reinforcement is discussed with detailed analysis. Finally, the paper will be concluded by introducing unreinforced slurry wall shaft system using newly developed/patented concrete additive.

Acid leach liquors from spent lithium-ion batteries employing lithium cobalt dioxide (LiCoO2) as a cathode active material contain valuable metals such as cobalt and lithium, as well as common metals such as aluminum and copper. The objective of this study was to develop a hydrometallurgical process providing a high selectively between aluminum, cobalt, copper, and lithium from hydrochloric acid solutions. Batch experiment results showed that selective hydroxide precipitation approach was not suitable because a significant amount of cobalt and lithium was co-precipitated with aluminum and copper hydroxides. In contrast, batch experiments and the subsequent data analysis indicated that the sequence of solvent extraction circuits using PC-88A, Acorga M5640, and tri-n-octylamine (TOA) extractants effectively separates four metals of interest. In the first circuit of the proposed process, copper was selectively extracted by Acorga M5640 at the pH 1.0-2.0. Aluminum, cobalt, and lithium remain in the aqueous phase. In the second circuit, aluminium is selectively extracted by PC-88A at pH 2.0-2.5. For the separation of remaining cobalt and lithium, Acorga M5640 provided higher separation efficiency compared to PC-88A single extractant and PC-88A/TOA mixed extractant. However, the stripping efficiency of cobalt from the Acorga M5640 organic phase was found to be low (less than 10 %). Therefore, PC-88A/TOA mixed extractant rather than Acorga M5640 is an advisable choice for the separation of cobalt and lithium. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has become an important tool for understanding the nano- to molecular scale mechanisms predominant in multiphase systems. In flotation research, the use of AFM holds promise for unlocking and establishing fundamental mechanisms, ultimately leading to significant advances in process performance. From measuring and characterising surface forces, the structure of molecules at interfaces, and nanoscale features on flotation media, AFM is a powerful tool that has only begun to impact flotation research. Highlights of advances made in the utilisation of AFM for flotation research at the University of Florida are given with an emphasis on interpreting the mechanisms behind calcium activation in phosphate flotation and the impact of nanoscale asperities on collector-born surface hydrophobicity.

Current magazine regulations are designed to avoid injury or property damage caused by accidental detonation as well as to store explosives securely. The primary emphasis appears to be the avoidance of unintended detonation or in the event such detonation occurs, the avoidance of damage to surrounding property. Adherence to these regulations largely serves the purpose intended but has caused difficulty in magazine sitting in built up areas. To the extent that magazine siting is too heavily restricted, other more significant dangers such as storage of explosives in more dangerous and less secure places may be encouraged. In summary, the regulations have served rural magazine locations well but may need further study for urban settings.

Geology and weather effects produce natural ground movements that may be misinterpreted as mine subsidence. Weather, local geology and vegetation clearly influence the elevation of the ground surface through frost action and changes in groundwater levels and soil moisture content. Common practices of monument and benchmark design and placement do not address the problem of natural ground movements. Monuments can be designed to minimize some natural ground movements. Differential displacements can be reduced by knowledgeable placement of benchmarks and monuments which are of similar design and construction. Commonly, the threshold values of movement for the determination of mine-induced subsidence are dependent on the closure errors (accuracy) of individual surveys. Accuracy is more than the amount of closure error; it should include the range of elevation changes (error band) determined for each monument over a period of time before it is disturbed by mining. Multiple baseline surveys of the entire monitoring system, conducted before the onset of subsidence, should be used to establish subsidence detection limits.
