INTRODUCTION The quantity of seepage that will be released from a tailings impoundment depends not only on the characteristics of the seepage control system, but also on the properties of the foundation soil or rock beneath the impoundment and the nature of the groundwater in the area. The interaction between various elements of the seepage control system and the influence the various characteristics of the site and impoundment have on seepage are the subject of this paper. The results of analyses are presented herein to indicate the nature and magnitude of the effect that the various factors will have on seep¬age losses. Analyses were conducted for a uranium mill tailings impoundment located in an area characteristic of many found in the western United States or Canada. A typical seepage control system consists of placement of either a clay or synthetic liner beneath the impoundment. In some cases an underdrain system may be placed on top of the liner to collect drainage from the tailings. The parameters that were varied in the analyses included those pertaining to the liner, underdrains and foundation strata. In general, it is shown that the seepage losses will vary in a complex manner depending on the interaction of the elements of the site and the seepage control system. As may be expected, the liner and underdrain systems have the most pronounced effect on controlling seepage. This paper deals with the quantity of seepage released from an impoundment However, the impact that seepage losses from an impoundment will have on the surrounding environment will depend on the rate at which contaminants will enter the groundwater and the nature of the groundwater flow itself. Consequently, when considering these results with regard to environmental impact they must be interpreted along with considerations of geochemical factors. MECHANICS OF SEEPAGE The mechanics of seepage and methods of analysis that were used will be discussed briefly herein. For a more detailed discussion the reader is referred elsewhere (McWhorter and Nelson, 1978, 1979, 1980). A general column through the impoundment was considered to be as shown in Fig. 1.

Highwall stability is a major consideration in optimising opencast mine geometry. It involves assessing the risk of those slope failures that are large enough to have significant cost, safety and/or operational implications. These risks are then balanced against the value of the resource to arrive at an acceptable slope design. Load-deformation models (commonly referred to as ænumericalÆ models) of slopes provide a powerful tool in this decision-making process since they can be verified well before slope failure occurs. This gives the slope designer increased confidence in reviewing designs during excavation, potentially allowing early revision of pit geometry to either increase or decrease safety margins as appropriate. However, these models are not always adopted as they depend heavily on an appropriate choice of constitutive model and material parameters.   A preliminary load-deformation model of a 170m highwall in Solid Energy North (SEN) OperationsÆ Awaroa 4 opencast coal mine in the Rotowaro Coalfield has been prepared. This uses a strain-dependent constitutive model based on laboratory test results, strength parameters developed by SEN and excavation monitoring data. The laboratory testing has included triaxial compression tests on large-diameter fractured samples to characterise the stress-strain response of the closely-jointed soft rock masses that exist in many parts of the mine. Data from the monitoring of a 25m cut made during excavation of a haul road has been used to refine and verify the constitutive model. The resulting highwall model has predicted highwall crest movements corresponding to the excavation of each bench, for comparison with monitored values. Key model outputs are total horizontal movements of about 0.5m near the highwall crest and shear strains of 0.5-0.7% at the locations of potential bedding-parallel shear planes underlying the highwall. Most of the movement is expected to occur as creep rather than as an immediate response to excavation.

Calcite and magnesite are both carbonate minerals and their crystals belong to trigonal system. Flotation tests were carried out to investigate the flotation behaviors of calcite and magnesite. The test results show that the floatability of calcite and magnesite under different grinding environment had obvious differences. The floatability of calcite using sodium oleate as collector after dry grinding is better than wet grinding, but the floatability of magnesite after wet grinding is better than dry grinding. The XPS surface elements test and zeta potential measurement show that, wet and dry grinding process makes the distribution difference of surface anion and metal cation, then influence the floatability of the two carbonate minerals using sodium oleate as collector. Difference of the carbonate crystal structure and solubility properties was also investigated. Research shows that crystal structure difference of calcite and magnesite causes the difference of solubility, which can influence the flotation behaviors under different grinding environment. A microscopic X-ray diffraction technique was employed for the simultaneous study of the behavior of several families of lattice planes, whose local orientatiotz changes are manufestations of internal distortions resulting from specimen deformation. Photographs taken using aluminum were single crystals 1/64 in. In diam are presented which illustrate the appearance of various types of deformation- or growth- induced structural variations. Slip and lattice bending were detected in tensile tests for strains as small as 0.1 pct. Evidence of deformation bands, lineage structure, and void formation wns also shown. AmONG the most important methods of studying internal stresses in metals is the utilization of various X-ray techniques. The general subject of X-ray metallography has been treated in a most excellent manner by Taylor,1 and the use of X-rays for the direct observation of imperfections in crystals has recently been reviewed in an article by Newkirk2 and in the book edited by Newkirk and Wernick.3 Since the inception of metallographic X-ray analysis, there have been numerous technological developments and refinements, each with its particular advantages and disadvantages and, acrording to these, its particular applications. X-ray diffraction techniques can be divided into two general categories, that of X-ray diffraction microscopy and that of X-ray diffraction macroscopy. In the former are included such methods as those of Berg-Barrett, Lang, and Schultz2,3 which are concerned with microscopic imperfections such as dislocations. The second category includes all work concerned with the study of the condition of a crystal lattice structure as indicated by the marroscopic detail in its diffraction patterns. An example of this is the study of the diffraction manifestations of inhomogeneous plastic deformation as manifested by formation of deformation bands and inhomogeneous lattice rotations. The method used in the present investigation was an X-ray diffraction macroscopy technique. The geometry and analytical aspects of the method were similar to those of Julien and Cullity.4,5 The source was collimated with a single slit in a manner simi- lar to the "parallel beam'' method of Barth and Hosemann6 except that a continuous spectrum of radiation was employed. The apparatus produced large-beam transmission Laue patterns of thin cylindrical aluminum-wire crystals, which were deformed either in tension or torsion. Although the conventional X-ray target and interposed slit were not capable of the high resolution obtainable with a fine-focus X-ray source as employed in a microfocus apparatus, resolution was a secondary consideration in our technique, and was sacrificed to obtain sufficient intensity along a sizable length of the specimen. By using a grid indexing technique similar to that of Barth,7 we were able to study several diffraction lines from various planes simultaneously. The results of these tests give additional information with regard to the inhomogeneous deformation of single crystals, and the indexing procedure used provides a correlation between portions of the test specimen and portions of a diffracted beam. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The experimental arrangement used is shown schematically in Fig. 1. A source of continuous X radiation from a vertically mounted Machlett X-ray tube possessing a copper target and operated at 20 kv and 10 ma was passed down a horizontal lead tube 80 cm long which terminated in an adjustable vertical brass slit. The slit opening was adjusted to correspond with the diameter of the test specimen. In front of the brass slit it was possible to place a screen wire mesh, one horizontal strand of which was a lead wire which served as a fiduciary mark, the screen itself serving as an indexing system as will be described later. However the giant bamboo fiber has low adhesion with the polymeric matrix. In order to understand the interaction that occurs between the bamboo fiber and the polymer matrix is necessary to evaluate its physical and chemical characteristics. Therefore, the present work analyzed the giant bamboo fiber by means of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The spectrum revealed main absorption bands typical of giant bamboo fiber specific molecular interactions.

This paper presents an overview of the research that has been carried out to improve the understanding of the fracture processes occurring in rock under high levels of stress. The onset and growth of fractures are studied by means of laboratory model testing, and the results obtained are used in the calibration and validation of the numerical model DIGS, which is based on displacement discontinuity. The results obtained so far have shown that, while there are overall similarities between the experimental results and the numerical simulations, improvements to the experimental procedures and the DIGS are required for a detailed mechanistic understanding of shear-band orientations and extension fractures.

Two methods of Monte-Carlo simulations, one suggested by Matheron (1972) and the other by Rudenno (1983), have been tested for simulating coal deposits. To do this 2160 values of ash percentages were simulated using 60 known data points in a two dimensional grid, 20 m x 40 m. 1L is found that while both methods conserve the mean of the known distribution in the results of the simulations, only the first method reproduces the spatial covariance (i.e. the variogram), of the experimental data. The results show that for simulation of regionalized variables only the first method tested yields the desired results.

A two year study into the effects of coal mining induced subsidence on cliff lines was undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources with the support of a grant under the National Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Program. A new monitoring technique, using an Electronic Distance Meter and acrylic reflectors attached to the cliffs, provided safety for the surveyors and extensive and accurate three dimensional displacement data on the movement of the cliffs as they were being undermined. The study report included many graphs showing the measured vertical and horizontal displacements, differential subsidence, tilts and strains and included analysis of these movements with various parameters, such as, seam thickness, depth of cover and distances between the reflectors, longwall face and the edge of the chain pillar. Some of these graphs are presented in this paper and could be used, with caution, to predict subsidence movements around other cliff lines, after allowing for differences in geology and mining layout. A mechanism is suggested as an explanation for the observed high horizontal movements around the cliff lines. Sixteen percent of the overall lengths of cliffs that were undermined during the monitoring study fell and the contributions of various factors that appeared to influence the cliff falls are discussed. It is concluded that no single factor dominated as the major cause of the cliff falls and, often, many factors combined to cause cliff face instability.

ALTHOUGH statistical data are not at hand to justify definite statements as to progress in health, and safety in the mining and allied industries during 1935, it now appears probable that in both coal mining and in metal- mining the rate of accident occurrence as well as the absolute number of accidents will show slight increases for the year. Much: of the responsibility for this increase lies with the large number of relatively. small mines that have more or less recently come into existence, partly because of 'the lack of opportunity for work in the larger mines for large numbers of unemployed miners, and partly due to increased prices for some of the mineral products, especially gold. In general, the larger long-established nines show downward accident trends and this is decidedly encouraging as it shows that where mines are operated with real efficiency, mining can be done in relative safety.

Sampling of municipal solid waste is known to be difficult to sample if it has to be representative. When dealing with municipal solid waste, the usual method is to study separately waste material below 40 mm and particles bigger than 40 mm. The material < 40 mm cannot be sorted manual and is termed the “fine fraction”. The particles > 40 mm can be separated manually and are usually sorted into pre-defined groups of materials. These groups can be defined depending on the demand of quality assurance. But standardisation of procedures is not far progressed, even for the widely practised sorting methods.

"Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential for many applications in electronics, energy harvesting, and defense. The common resources for economic extraction of REEs are oxides such as bastnaesite and monazite, which are scarcely available in the earth’s crust. On the other hand, REEs are available in many clay and phosphate ores where REEs substitute Ca or Si in the mineral lattices or as physically adsorbed cations at negatively charged sites on the clay surface. While REE oxides readily dissolve in acid, making the chemical leaching of REEs an economically viable option, adopting a similar approach for leaching of silicates and phosphate ores is unfeasible because of significantly low REEs content in these ore deposits. Bio-leaching approaches are environmentally benign and economically viable. We investigated the bio-leaching (Acidothiobacillus ferrooxidans (Af) and the fungal Aspergillus niger (An)) of REEs from a phosphate ore, and examined the factors governing the leaching processes. Based on the shake flask leaching studies, an increase in surface area combined with an increase in pulp density (1-15 wt. %) was found to lead to an increase in the amount of REEs leached. In contrast, an increase in the surface area by reducing the particle size from 75 to 35 led to a decrease in the amount of REEs leached. These differing attributes are proposed to be due to the poor bacterial growth/activity with high F- ions in the leaching media, F- released from the edge-sites of the smaller particles. On the other hand, several advantages that associate with the Af bacterial bio-leaching processes relate to the media composition (Mg2+ and (NH4)+) and phenomena occurring at the electrical double layers of the mineral and bacterial- water interfaces. These studies suggested that leaching of particles occur in a layer-by-layer manner.INTRODUCTIONRare Earth Elements (REEs) are essential for many important applications, such as in electronics, energy generation, and defense. The common resources for economic extraction of REEs are typically carbonates such as bastnaesite and monazite, which are scarcely available in the earth’s crust (Y. Kanazawa and M. Kamitani, 2006). REEs are abundantly available in many clay and phosphate ores where REEs substitute Ca or Si of the mineral lattices. Conventional acid leaching of REEs from oxides is not economically feasible for clay and phosphate ores because of significantly low REE content (parts per billion) in these ores (Tian, J., Chi, R., Yin, J., 2010a; Moldoveanu G. A. and Papangelakis V. G., 2013; WK Goyne, LS Brantley and J Chorover, 2010). In some cases, REEs could be extracted from these ores via chemical leaching routes as they constitute reasonable amounts of REEs (0.1 - 1% REEs). A major challenge faced in general in chemical leaching processes (Chi, R., 1988) is the loss of REEs in the phosphate/gypsum precipitates/crystals, which are overcome in a step-by-step manner by sequentially removing impurities such as fluorine and calcium, including steps carried out at elevated temperatures. On the other hand, bio-leaching approaches provide environmentally benign and economical alternatives. Acidophilic bacteria are currently being used for industrial scale bio-leaching of Au/Cu/Ni from low grade ores. Studies on bioleaching of REEs from red mud (Al2O3) using Penicillium tricolor and Aspergilus niger (An), and, of bio-leaching (lab-scale) of phosphate rocks using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (Af) have been reported (Boon, M., Heijnen, J.J., 1993; Qu, Y. and Lian, B., 2013). We conducted bacterial (Af) bio-leaching of REEs from a phosphate ore in shake flasks and columns, while examining the key factors that govern leaching kinetics."

Resource calculations for shear hosted deposits of any type are difficult regardless of which calculation technique is used. One of the main problems is the determination of the geometry of the mineralisation. Once this has been elucidated then the appropriate resource calculation methodology can be employed with a search distance and orientation that is relevant.

The discovery of prolific oil wells in old territory hitherto regarded as doubtful, if not worthless, and the rapid extension of a gas pool opened late in 1938 were the most interesting petroleum features in West Virginia during 1939. Oil activity in general was slow because of crude prices that were still fairly low at the end of the year, although substantially increased above those in January. Fewer oil wells were completed, but the average results were better than in 1938. Fewer gas wells, also, were completed, with greatly lessened average initial production. Many old oil and gas wells were abandoned, so that the total number of active wells has not changed appreciably. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other sources, shows that 561 new wells were drilled, resulting in 101 new oil wells with 2261 bbl. of daily initial production; 366 new gas wells with 602,400,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow; and 94 dry holes. Besides these new wells, 61 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 12 bbl. and 13,328,000 cn. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 22.38 bbl. per well per day; and the gas average was 1,645,900 cu. ft. per well per day; the ratio of dry holes to completions was 16.76 per cent. From an exploratory standpoint one partly discredited oil area was revived by good new production, and another small oil pool may have been opened. Some of the results in gas exploration will require more drilling for true appraisal. It is certain, though, that one very considerable gas field in the sands of Mississippian age has been proved; and there is a probability of six new pools in the Middle Devonian shale. In the Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) the Elk-Poca pool has been extended considerably farther northwest into Jackson County; and farther north in Jackson County two widely separated wells, which may be pool openers, have been successfully completed. On the other hand, several important wildcats in various counties have been dry. Stratigraphically lower, some additional wells have been completed in the Newburg sand (Sil.) and one small producer has been completed in the Clinton sand (Sil.), the importance of which can scarcely be overestimated, because no Clinton production has previously been found in the state, although at least seven wells have been drilled through the sand.
