The Blast Furnace Studies Section, Metallurgieal Division, Bureau of Mines, has been working for several years on the mechanism of desulphurization of iron and steel by slags. The usual assumption that desulphurization takes place by diffusion of FeS from metal into slag and subsequent reaction of this FeS with CaO to produce CaS has seemed to us inconsistent with a number of experimental results we have obtained. We undertook, for example, to determine the proportion of sulphur in a slag present as FeS. An entirely satisfactory method of doing this has not yet been evolved. The results of extraction with metallic antimony led to an interesting conclusion, however. FeS is readily soluble in metallic antimony, either physically or by chemical reaction. On the other hand, CaS was found to be insoluble. Hence it would appear that by rapid extraction of the slag with antimony we might expect to determine the distribution of sulphur between iron and calcium. The results showed that much of the sulphur was present as FeS. In some instances the extraction of sulphur as FeS was almost quantitative. For example, in a slag containing 3.8 grams Fe and 3.7 grams S, extraction removed 1.18 grams S and 2.12 grams Fe. If all the iron present in the antimony had been FeS, 1.21 grams S would have been extracted. In another slag with 8.6 grams Fe and 0.06 gram S present, 0.14 gram Fe and 0.08 gram S were extracted. This was obviously extraction of sulphur as FeS within the analytical error and showed that FeS was present either in solution or as a dispersion. Attempts to determine the solubility of FeS and CaS in slag by quenching and ultramicroscopic investigation have indicated that the solubility of FeS is very low, and that reactions in the slag are probably not to be considered as homogeneous. A more detailed report on these theoretical considerations will be made at a later date.

Many of the recent major achievements of our industry were visions of our forefathers in the 1800s. Only recently has technology been able to meet the vision of our predecessors. This paper follows the development of selected aspects of tunnelling from the 1800s to present day. It appears that, at the turn of the century, technology is beginning to catch up with our vision and we are able to put our ideas to work more quickly.

It is a pleasure to report that the light metals industries are running well ahead of the growth schedule projected by the President's Materials Policy Commission. In the compilation of this survey on the five-year growth of our light metals industries, some gratifying facts come to light. By 1956, for instance, light metals consumption had increased more than 20 pct beyond Paley report expectations-a growth not anticipated by the study until the year 1960.

The paper is a summary of information on Canadian deposits of uranium and thorium up to the end of 1948, prepared by geologists of Eldorado Mining and Refining Ltd. and by the specialist on uranium deposits for the Geological Survey of Canada. The paper contains a history of Canadian uranium and thorium discoveries, a working classification of the deposits, fairly detailed descriptions of the Eldorado mine and of properties in northern Saskatchewan, and shorter accounts of several other discoveries.

In its 110-year history as a mining camp, the Boleo copper district of Baja California has weathered significant changes in its operation, ownership, and profitability, despite an inhospitable environment and unique ore body. For some 65 years, under the operation of Compagnie Boleo, the area ranked as the second largest copper producing district in Mexico, with over 560 km of underground workings. As its ore grade-and profitability-declined, operations continued sporadically and with varying degrees of success. Today, operations at Boleo are maintained -despite the economics -while work is underway to devise a viable metallurgical process. Lab tests on a hydrometallurgical method look encouraging and, though this may end the district's days as a mining camp, the feasibility of the process may result in an 18-kt/d full-scale operation.

Two sessions during the recent AMC Mining Convention in Los Angeles, September 23-26, served to update industry personnel on the status of health and safety regulations in the US. As reflected by the American Mining Congress resolution on mine safety and health, "Based on experience with the federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, (AMC) does not believe that laws designed to force compliance with regulations through the imposition of criminal or civil penalties will result in safer mines. (AMC) feels that the government's participation will be much more productive if greater emphasis is placed on research, training, and inspections aimed primarily at assisting operators and employees in recognizing and eliminating hazardous conditions and practices.

As coal mines age and become more developed, ventilation modeling becomes more important for the planning and continued operation of the system. Numerous studies have been performed and presented that address the collection of data and measurement of airway friction factor and resistance per unit length values. However, a quantitative analysis of the resistance for stoppings in coal mines for different construction materials and methodologies has not been adequately addressed. In order to develop an accurate/realistic ventilation model both airway resistances and stopping resistance values need to be determined. Over the course of the past two decades Mine Ventilation Services, Inc (MVS) has measured the resistance of stoppings of various construction types in mines throughout the world. An analysis of this data is presented in this paper along with a discussion of measurement methodology.

The Zinc Corporation of South Africa (Zincor) were hosts to about forty members of the Institute at their works in Springs on Friday, 25th April, 1986. The programme, designed to give an overview of the industry and the part played by Zincor, comprised an introductory talk, a technical talk, a tour of the plant, and a luncheon. Radioactive waste in arid regions A conference on the disposal of radioactive waste in arid areas will be held in Cape Town during the period 7th to 12th September, 1986. It is recommended that engineers and scientists avail themselves of the opportunity to familiarize themselves with this relatively new multidisciplinary field of endeavor by attending the first ever conference of this nature to be held in South Africa. Iron control in hydro metallurgy The International Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometalurgy will be held at the 16th Hydrometallurgical Meeting, from 19th to 22nd October, 1986, in Toronto, Canada.

Small particles, 10-20 microns diameter, of a 28.6 atom pct nickel, balance iron alloy, have been supercooled 186 C with respect to bulk alloy M, temperature. Particles exhibit a marked mechanical shock sensitivity while being held in a supercooled state. The tendency for shock to induce martensitic transformation appears to be a maximum at —140 to —160°. Slow cooling of particles in mechanical contact with one another results in extensive martensite formation. This is prob-ably the same effect as the catalytic effect observed in polycrystals where martensite formation in one grain induces transformation in other grains. AS a result of extensive research over the past decade on the martensitic transformation, a much better though not complete understanding of the transformation has resulted. Recent advances in rock-mass mechanics and computational technology now allow for the stability analysis of excavations in "wet" mines where mining-induced changes in rock mass deformation and fluid flow are coupled and time dependent. In addition to water pressure and flow in jointed, possibly porous, rock masses, all of the usual dry-mine parameters, including the premining stress state and rock-mass properties, are taken into account. Finite-element analyses of shafts and tunnels, as circular, elliptical, rectangular and arched-rectangular hole shapes excavated in an initially stressed and pressurized rock mass, indicate that the usual guidelines for optimum shape and orientation of single openings apply. Here, optimum means maximizing the minimum wall safety factor or, equivalently, minimizing the peak stress concentration. The results also show that failure originates in elements at the wall and the minimum safety factor at the wall in the wet case is always less than the dry case, regardless of drainage time allowed.

Shear strength assessment and the associated variability in rock masses historically have been hindered by high costs and biases in laboratory testing programs. An in situ direct shear device was developed on the principle of the previous borehole shear device for soils. Using wedge action to simultaneously apply normal and shear stress to an envelope of material on the periphery of a borehole, the device develops a complete Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope. Tests performed in homogeneous materials show expected strengths and their variability equivalent to laboratory tests. However, tests in a structurally non- homogeneous coal did not display significant variability. A 38 mm diam borehole was used in this work; however, larger or smaller bore- holes may also be used within the size limits of the device. The device is employed in holes commonly drilled for rock bolt placement, at 1 to 2 minutes per test.

The inclusion of a new term "planned subsidence" in the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1977 has lead the U.S. coal mining industry into a new aspect of engineering: subsidence planning. Subsidence planning has necessitated the integration of geotechnical, civil, and mining engineering disciplines. Although much of the foundation and application work has been completed, subsidence planning is still a developing area. This paper discusses the application of subsidence planning in several brief case studies (a high voltage transmission tower, a sewage treatment plant, and a slurry impoundment), emphasizing the risk assessment aspects necessary to account for some of the uncertainties that may exist.

This paper is concerned with studying the dewatering behavior of three samples of iron ore products. The objective is to improve the industrial filtration performance by taking into account the laboratory results. Mineral samples came from the Iron Ore Quadrangle in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. These samples represent products from the industrial processing of hematitic ores. The samples have almost the same chemical and mineralogical compositions, but they have different size distributions and different specific surface areas. The filtration tests were performed using a modified Büchner funnel apparatus. The results indicate that size distribution and specific surface area have significant influences on dewatering behavior. For Sample 1, the addition of flocculant and/or surfactant was not essential to improving filtration performance. For Sample 3, the cake porosity and the cake thickness were influenced by the addition of the flocculant. On the other hand, the simultaneous addition of flocculant/surfactant decreased the cake formation time and reduced the cake moisture. For Samples 2 and 3, it was also observed that the industrial operation could be improved by taking into account these laboratory results. FOLLOWING the passage of resolutions by a num-ber of the western local sections, which have beer printed in previous issues, the Board of Directors appointed a committee consisting of Messrs. Reynders, DeGolyer, Taylor and Merica, to call on the Director of the Budget, and to bring these resolutions to his attention. In response to a request to the committee Mr. Reynders has addressed the following letter to General Lord. In response to a suggestion made in the course of the conference held between you and President DeGolyer of this Institute at Washington on Oct. 6, I present herewith a brief statement of the reasons that have led the mining engineers and metallurgists of this country to urge upon the Government a policy of increasing support from year to year to the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines. While these are not the only technical bureaus to which we look for data and guidance in our work of winning and rendering useful the mineral re-sources of the country, they are the ones on which we chiefly rely and the usefulness of which extends over all the industries which are based on mines and mining. In calling this matter to your attention and to that of the departments in which these bureaus are situated, I am acting on behalf of a special committee appointed by the Board of Directors and which includes men in close and intimate contact with the iron, coal, petroleum, metals and metallurgical industries; men well qualified by experience and position to voice the real feeling of these industries. The subject is not a new one to our Board, which has long kept a watchful eye on the work of the two bureaus as would be natural in that the American Institute of Mining Engineers, represents the largest group of technical men and executives and the one of most wide-spread interest in the American mineral industries. With 9000 members and. 27 local chapters scattered among the mining states, the Institute is in a peculiarly favorable position to know and to set out the feeling among mining men and metal-lurgists as to the proper scope of activities of these Federal bureaus, the quality of their work, and the gaps in knowl-edge that most need filling.

Soil and sands were contaminated with depleted uranium from weapons testing. This resulted in the formation of a complex mixture of uranium compounds. Characterization studies of the soil indicated the uranium was present as uranium metal, uranium oxides, silicon-bearing metallic uranium, and uranium silicates. A process was developed to selectively remove dense uranium compounds using gravity separation and a chemical extraction system to remove uranium which was not available for separation by gravity methods. Results from characterization studies and pilot scale testing are presented for background information. The primary purpose of this presentation is the report of the results achieved in the field application of the processes.

The steadily increasing interest in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) as a legitimate alternative comminution technology for hard rock applications has led to a proportional increase in the demand for trade-off studies comparing HPGR with more established approaches, typically SAG-based but including AG and stage-crushing designs. The primary trade-off is between a) the higher capital cost typically incurred with HPGR-based designs and b) the higher operating costs of the more traditional technologies. However, if, through circuit design innovation, the capital cost penalty of HPGR circuits could be eliminated or reversed, then the need for trade-off studies would diminish.

Seam interaction in multiple seam mining has significant effect on entry stability. The remaining pillar in an old working usually creates a high stress concentration zone while the gob creates a stress release zone. A good panel layout should take advantage of the stress release effect created by old workings. This paper presents two case studies of multiple seam mining. The Jennmar Finite Element Analysis System (JFEA) is utilized to analyze the seam interaction effect and identify the mess concentration and relief zones Panel layouts are designed bad on the results of the finite element analysis Appropriate roof support system are also designed for different seam interaction areas.

A new process for extracting indium from indium-zinc concentrates was proposed in this paper. The process can directly extract indium from removed copper solution by P204, and cancel the stage of removing iron in the traditional process because of using iron and part of zinc in the In-Zn concentrates for direct preparing high quality Mn-Zn soft magnetic ferrites. The technologies in the processes, such as leaching the neutral leached residues with high concentrated acid at high temperature, reduction ferric and removing copper, and extracting indium, were investigated. The results showed that total recovery ratio of indium has been increased from less than 70% in the traditional process to more than 95%. This process has the advantages of largely simplifying the procedure of indium extraction, zero draining off of iron residue and zero emitting of SO2. So this is a clean production process.
