There is a vast amount of geotechnical data, which can be obtained during exploration programs at new and existing mine sites. Additional information on the performance of the in-situ rock mass can be obtained from bore cores, which are usually only geologically logged and then stored. A computer based data management system for storage and retrieval of geotechnical data has been developed to access and manipulate such data.

Several years ago, Mr. Robert A. Cook described and illustrated in our Transactions a mechanical coke-drawer, patented in 1891 by Mr. Thomas Smith of the Thorncliff Iron Works, Sheffield, England, and first introduced in the United States in 1896, at the coking-plant of the Latrobe Coal Co., Latrobe,Pa. This machine has not received any very extended application in this country, although it was successfully used in two places for a number of years. The present paper describes a new and simpler machine, containing few wearing-parts, and capable of withstanding continued rough usage. Anything which tends to prolong the general use of bee-hive ovens will be welcome to those who are interested in cheapening the cost of producing coke in such ovens, especially if it provides satisfactory mechanical means, replacing the hard labor involved in drawing coke by hand with the old-fashioned " duck bill." Crosstown Interceptor Phase IA is the first deep tunnel element of the Milwaukee Inline Project. The tunnel contract includes 6,492 meters (m) of 9.1-m-diameter tunnel, two access shafts, and partial lining for structural purposes. The work also includes grouting to be performed as directed by the engineer to provide groundwater infiltration control in lined and unlined reaches of the tunnel. This paper summarizes infiltration observations, progress of the grouting work, and its potential application to the remainder of the Milwaukee project.

Water sprays are a common method used to reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions. Various factors such as wettability, surface area coverage, fine particle engulfment rates, interparticle adhesion forces, suppressant penetration, and suppressant longevity have all been suggested as critical factors in achieving effective PM control. However, it has not been established which of these factors are the most important. Experimental work indicated that suppressant penetration is the most critical of these factors. Suppressant effectiveness was also improved using hygroscopic reagents which retained moisture, improving longevity. Maximizing suppressant penetration and improving suppressant longevity led to an average 86% reduction in PM10 concentrations in laboratory dust tower tests.

Mass blasting of open stopes and pillars is a normal operating practice at Isa Mine. Three main parameters are used to classify the types of mass blasts. These are type of explosive used, blasthole diameter and system of initiation. Both electric and non-electric initiating systems are currently employed. The advantages gained by large firings are many. More efficient utilization of manpower, due to the concentrated and continuous charging, is achieved. There is no requirement for men to re-enter areas where localised ground conditions may have deteriorated and exposure of ringfirers to stope voids is reduced.

The use of images to determine blast fragmentation is the only feasible technique when one does not want to disturb the production cycle. However, three major problems exist with the use of images. The first is determining real size from a two-dimensional particle, the second is estimating the fines which are missing due to image resolution and particle size range, and the third is proper sampling such that a statistical probability can be calculated for the distribution. Once these problems are resolved, the tedious process of digitizing images by hand may be automated. This paper describes the present techniques used at the JKMRC to "size" blast fragmentation, estimate the missing fines using the Rosin-Rammler equation, determine the sampling error using Gy's sampling equations, and extract the particles from an image using an IBM-AT computer.

A CORPORATION would go into bankruptcy if its affairs were conducted as are those of the state of New York, according to the Committee on New York State Government Reorganization of the American Engineering Council of the Federated American Engineering Societies, in a report to the chairman, of the Joint Judiciary Committees of the Senate and Assembly. The report, just made public, was signed by the three members of the committee who were appointed by Herbert Hoover. They were H. de-B. Parsons, chair- man, Paul G. Brown and Lewis B. Stillwell. Although the American Engineering Council is a national organization, it decided to aid in governmental reorganization in New York State because of the magnitude of the task. The Council's committee in its report urged the passage of three state reorganization amendments for consolidation of departments, an executive budget system, and a four-year term for the higher state officials. Two modified polyacrylamide flocculants, namely polyacrylamide with glycolic acid functionality (PAMG), and a copolymer of acrylamide with N-acryloyl-[T]- aminobutyric acid (HPVP), were synthesized, characterised and evaluated for selective separation in apatite/quartz and apatite/dolomite/calcite systems, respectively. PAMG flocculant was found selective in the separation of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) from its mixtures with quartz at acidic to neutral pH range. The selectivity deteriorated at alkaline pH. In contrast, polyacrylic acid (PAA) flocculant was found most effective only in the alkaline pH range. HPVP flocculant (even though flocculating all three minerals namely apatite, dolomite and calcite) was observed to be quite selective for the separation of calcite from apatite-dolomite minerals in single mineral tests in the presence of sodium hexametaphosphate dispersant at neutral pH. There was, however, no selectivity observed during tests on synthetic mixtures. This loss in selectivity is attributed to the phenomenon of hetero-flocculation, as reported earlier, for separation in an apatite-dolomite system with polyethylene oxide.

This paper analyses the first results of a part of an EEC research project ("Blasting control for underground mining"). This research that involves three universities (Paris, Torino and Leoben) has been carried out at the Eisenerz test mine in Austria. In the experimental campaign here reviewed, parallel holes rounds have been fired "decomposed", which means with enough delay between the explosions of the successive blastholes groups to allow for a separate evaluation of their effects on the rock. The seismic effects have been recorded by geophones placed at small distance from the blast, the aim being to find out correlations between the features of the seismogram and the good or poor performance of the single blastholes, or of the groups pertaining to the same delay. Indeed, the seismogram is the only safe and cheaply obtainable description of what happens during the blast. The seismogram should be transformed in a diagnostic tool in the round 'calibration' stage, and in a routine control device during excavation.

A plant trial was conducted at the Paddy's Flat plant of Dominion Mining Limited with the aim of comparing the ef evenness of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide as leaching oxidants. The Paddy's Flat plant is designed such that the leach train can be divided into two parallel streams, allowing the same or lurry to be eated in two identical trains. By effectively ehminatmg the influence of the ore variations on the results subtle differences in the performance of the two reagents hav been identified. . . The results of the plant trial indicate that the two reagents act m different ways, and that each may be more suitable than the other _for _the treatment of certain types of ore. In some cases a co bmation of the two reagents may be the most cost effective option. . or t e same chemical conditions in the leach pulp, including dissolved oxygen levels , the reagents achieve different gold leaching rates, and in some cases different ultimate leach extraction.

The present study was carried out to explore the possible separate recovery of iron and phosphorus (as gas) from BOF slag using graphite crucibles or graphite powders in the presence of a tin bath. The last is consider- ed to enhance the activity of phosphorus in iron reduced from slag or not to absorb the phosphorus vapour readily. When the slag was reduced in a graphite crucible in contact with a tin bath, the phosphorus reduced from the slag was carried away in CO explosively generated by the reduc- tion of iron oxide. When graphite powder was used as the reductant instead, 78% of the phosphorus was removed from slag, only 3% of which was absorb- ed into the tin bath. The rest left the system as gas. Gaseous dephosphorization depends on the area of contact between slag and reductant as cll n.u the amount of the latter. the reduction behaviour was directly observed, using an X ray transmission technique, to conlirm the reaction mechanism.

The Reefton Goldfield has had the largest hard-rock gold production (64 t Au) on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, and is currently under renewed development by Oceana Gold. The gold predominantly occurs in variably sheared quartz veins that are associated with zones of tighter, shorter wavelength folds in the host Greenland Group metasediments. The quartz veins typically occur as a series of plunging shoots that align with specific fold limbs or fold hinge zones. Shear zones containing disseminated mineralisation and quartz veins have thickness variations that relate to the angular relationship between the shear and host-rock bedding. Exploration strategies and targeting can be developed around both types of structural control.

In a stipulated hard rock situation, drilling and blasting costs per tonne in open cutting or underground operations are comparable. In open cuts the drilling and blasting costs per tonne of ore are multiplied by the waste ratio.Conventional underground loading and haulage practices are so batch-oriented that the cost per tonne of ore handled is a large integral multiplier of open out costs per tonne loaded and hauled.If underground costs are to be reduced to compare favourably with open out costs then loading and hauling practices underground must be converted to a non-batch continuous system. This can be achieved by utilising gravity to control ore to mobile crushers feeding conveyors running direct to surface.

Metal sulfides are degraded via thiosulfate (pyrite) or via polysulfides and sulfur (sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite) by leaching bacteria The attack on the crystal lattice is either effected by only iron(III) ions or by iron(III) ions and protons, respectively. Consequently, different endproducts are formed. For a control of ARD-processes, these reactions need to be hown to regulate them. Experiments in percolators up to 65 m3 with inorganic compounds like fluoride, concrete, or SDS resulted in differently lasting inhibition. Microcalorimetric measurements of microbial leach activity allow monitoring of these effects with respect to active bacterial cells, and, in addition, the amount or rate of dissolved metal sulfide allowing prediction of possible endangerment by ARD.

HISTORY OF PRODUCTION AND USE In 1899 the consumption of fluorspar in the United States was reported as 16,000 tons. The invention of the open-hearth method of steel manufacture, plus the beginnings of a fluorine chemical industry, pushed consumption of fluorspar to 250,000 tons by 1918. In contrast to these consumption statistics of the past, the most recent statistics available (1972) indicate a total fluorspar usage in the United States of 1.352 million st (Table 15.4D.1). Fluorspar remains the world's cheapest source of fluorine, and its unique properties make the mineral the most desirable fluxing agent for steel refining. The linking of fluorine with carbon in the late 1930s resulted in the production of fluorocarbon, and constant growth in production over the years has formed the backbone of a strong fluorine chemical industry. For example, in 1972 it is estimated that total fluorocarbon production amounted to 2.113 million tons, and that, in this process, over 1.351 million tons of acid-grade fluorspar was consumed. The producers of primary aluminum long have been concerned about the fast dwindling reserves of natural cryolite. They found the solution to their problem by utilizing fluorspar for the manufacture of synthetic cryolite and aluminum fluoride. Nuclear weapons, as well as the growing number of peaceful uses for atomic reactors, constitute a market for uranium hexafluoride. This chemical and chlorine pentafluoride, used as an oxidizer with rocket fuels, are products that are as much a novelty as fluorocarbons were 25 years ago. Judging from past success in the field of fluorine chemistry research, it is safe to assume that the market for these chemicals will grow in the future. Three major industries account for the bulk of the fluorspar consumption: steel refining, fluorine chemical, and primary aluminum production. These industries have had a pattern of fabulous growth in the past, and their future plans point to a continuation of this pattern. It seems logical that the fluorspar usage also should continue its upward trend. Considering the growth of the fluorspar industry since 1899, and the obvious dependence on imports of fluorspar as a raw material, one of the most puzzling aspects of the past has been the apparent lack of coordination between fluorspar production and fluorspar consumption. A few authoritative voices have spoken out concerning the need to expand fluorspar production in order to meet consumption of the future. During World War II, the U.S. Government took positive steps in this direction by authorizing purchases at attractive prices for its "stockpile program." "A t last the legal red tape which has tied up flow-through share financing has been cut. New rules effective for deals signed after 1986 simplify flow-through financing by removing the necessity f or cumbersome agency relationships. But there is no free lunch-the new rules require increased government reporting. And beware federal tax reform promises to have a good look at the new flow-through share rules. IntroductionFlow-through shares have always worked better in theory then reality as an effective financing tool. The concept is straightforward: a transfer of risks, tax deductions, and potential returns. But the mechanics of the old flow-through rules made the transfer of risk impractical to impossible by placing the responsibility for incurring Canadian exploration expense (CEE) on investors. The new rules are significantly more realistic, shifting that responsibility to the issuing corporation. However, every silver lining must have a few clouds around it. In the case of the new flow-through rules, the more obvious negatives are increased reporting requirements and reductions in CEE eligible for flow-through by amounts of assistance received. The new rules are effective for deals signed after 1986, however, so a few old-style deals are still around. Practical Difficulties with Old RulesThe old rules which applied to investments in flow-through shares were structured so as to make it the responsibility of the investor, rather than the issuing corporation, to perform the Canadian exploration expense for flow-through. Since most investors had neither the expertise nor the inclination to incur the CEE, this requirement necessitated the use of cumbersome arrangements whereby the investors would appoint an agent (usually the issuing corporation) to incur CEE on their behalf. Although the issuing corporation might consequently be the party which actually spends the flow-through share funds on CEE, the awkward legal structure of such an arrangement made the investor the ""principal"" incurring the CEE. As such, the requirements of the old rules were met and the investors could receive their flow-through share s."

This paper discusses considerations to be made for the selection of rock tunnelling machines, as opposed to drilling and blasting. A systematic approach is presented in terms of utilizing data frcm site investigations to accurately forecast machine performance for estimating and planning purposes and to help minimise associated risks. Useful rock index properties are identified, and correlations for predicting advance rates for roadheader and full face machines are presented together with a simple method of characteristing rock mass conditions for estimating machine utilization and the savings to be gained in support costs. Finally considerations for tunnelling in adverse ground, for advance probing and for large sized tunnels are outlined.

For the purification of quarry waters from copper and their further utilization a three-sectional electrochemical reactor is constructed providing the extraction of 90-95% copper as a self-loosing powder from the quarry water running as a steady flow. Four variations of the integrated processing of quarry water are developed and their relative technical and economical parameters are calculated. The detailed technological scheme is given for the variant that is the most profitable for Georgia.
