Curved pulp lifters have been incorporated in SAG and AG mills in Australia. The aims have been to ensure complete discharge, at high throughput, of both slurry and coarse solids, especially at high mill rotational speeds. Curved pulp lifters can overcome incomplete discharge and back-flow of solids down the pulp lifter that can occur in straight-radial pulp lifters (and is a major cause of wear). They can be designed to prevent reverse flow of pulp via grates back into the mill. Experience with curved pulp lifters now extends to three years over three mills, in one mill as an installation from new and two as retro-fitted installations. Curved pulp lifters, relative to conventional designs, offer improved discharge and wear performance and well as high impact-resistance and wear life of the curved pulp lifter grates.

As the existing major U.S. - Canada rail tunnel was too small to accommodate double-stack container cars, Canadian National Railways is constructing a new parallel tunnel with a 50% greater diameter. Starting in Sarnia, Ontario, the new shallow-cover bored tunnel runs under a large research building and several other structures in an oil refinery before travelling under the St. Clair River. Maximum predicted settlements to be caused by the 9.2 meter diameter earth pressure balance TBM in the soft St. Clair till were in excess of 100 millimeters. As such, these settlements had the potential to cause severe damage and disruption to the existing refinery. In order to reinforce the soft clays below the refinery research building and other structures, and to compensate for settlement caused by the tunnelling, the ground improvement method of Soil Fracture grouting was successfully applied for the first time in North America. This paper will describe the details of both the soil fracture grouting application and the elaborate electrolevel remote monitoring system used.

YUGOSLAVIA is one of the smaller countries in Europe-about twice the size of Pennsylvania -but one of the richest nations in variety and quantity of minerals on the Continent. The country, just now beginning the pangs of a real industrial birth, has a mining history that goes back as far as the sixth century, B. C. Among others, the Romans exploited Yugoslavia's lead and zinc deposits, and there was intensive mining during the Middle Ages. But until now, the country's industrial development was such that it made no great demand on the mining industry for development or expansion. Conversations with Yugoslavian officials in New York give the impression that they are interested in two things. They need money and they need trained engineers to solve their mining problems. Yugoslavia appears to be attempting to attract both foreign money and foreign technical skill. They want financial aid in the form of loans. The U. S. Government has given aid to Yugoslavia in the shape of armaments, foodstuffs, and equipment. Recently, American banks have advanced funds.

An examination has been made of the rate and extent of removal of carbon from scrap metal charges when the melt is exposed to atmospheres which are reducing or oxidising with respect to FeO at unit activity. The mechanisms of decarburisation of molten Fe-C-S- P-Mn-Si alloys with H2/CO/H20/C02 gas mixtures with controlled compositions at high or low concentrations of carbon in the melt in the presence and in the absence of sponge iron, in both slag free melts and in the presence of various slag forming additives are discussed. A significant quantity of carbon can be removed from the metal during the melting stage and under optimum conditions, a high percentage of metal recovery and low carbon can be obtained after exposure of melt to the above gas mixture with controlled compositions. The presence of ferrous oxide provided by poorly reduced ore in the charge and the use of controlled atmospheres facilitated the removal of carbon to very low level during the melting period.

With a total value to date of well over $200,000.000.00 for its ore production, the Tintic mining district, which is about 100 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, ranks as one of the three main ore producing areas of Utah. In it are located the biggest silver mines of the country, silver having been the chief metal produced in the camp since its start. Tintic's silver production to date has a total value of over $1 00,000,000, approximately half of the value of the camp's ore production, the balance being roughly divided among lead, gold and copper. Discovery of the camp was made in the late sixties. Lack of transportation and ore reduction facilities delayed extensive development of the area for nearly a decade. In recent years Tintic's ore production has ranged from 350,000 to 400,000 tons annually. In 1924 the camp produced one-eighth of the silver produced in the nation with an output of 7,729,700 ounces. Its lead production was 77,765,000 pounds and its gold production 26,285 ounces.

An experimental investigation was performed to evaluate the role of stress waves in the pre-splitting operation. 3D birefringent Plexiglas models and the dynamic photoelastic technique were used to visualize the stress waves generated by the detonation. Simultaneous as well as sequential detonation of the explosive charges were investigated. The development of fractures and stress waves were recorded using a high speed multiple spark gap camera of the Cranz-Shardin type. The experimental data was analyzed and displayed-on a Lagrangian diagram to present an overall picture of the entire dynamic event. It was repeatedly observed in the tests that the time required for the completion of the pre-splitting operation as practiced in the field is of the same order as that for the transit time for the stress waves between the blastholes thereby revealing the highly elasto-dynamic nature of the event.

The aim of this research is to extract zinc from complex lead and zinc ore containing carbo- silicate lead and zinc minerals using sulphuric acid. Samples, taken from Dareh Zanjireh mine located in central of Iran, were subjected to leaching tests after calcination process. Experiments were planed according to the Taguchi statistical method. The calcinated samples contain 13.98% zinc and the constituting minerals being dolomite and zincate. Various parameters such as speed of mixing, temperature, time, solid to liquid ratio and pH were studied. A solid to liquid ratio of 1:6 gr/mL at 60°C and 800 rpm speed of mixing for 30 minutes resulted in a product with 85.96% zinc recoveries.

Apparatus and a method for determining the volumetric behavior of hydrocarbons at pressures up to 10,000 psia and at temperatures between 0° and 460°F are described. The equipment is suitable for measuring the total volume of the system and the volume of a liquid phase as functions of state within these ranges of temperature and pressure. Introduction During the past two decades there has been a marked increase in the ranges of temperature and pressure encountered in underground hydrocarbon reservoirs of commercial interest. In addition, greater interest in the intensive characteristics of the fluids found in these reservoirs has developed. Apparatus Several types of apparatus have been developed in the authors' laboratory for volumetric measurements of hydrocarbon systems. The earliest equipment described1 was characterized by constant volume, and the weight of material present was varied systematically in order to attain the different pressures desired in the study. Later another apparatus2 was built in which the effective volume of the cylindrical cell, which confined a hydrocarbon sample of constant weight was varied by injection or withdrawal of mercury. The effective total volume of the equilibrium cell was measured by ascertaining the position of the mercury surface but no measurement could be made which gave knowledge of the volumes of individual phases existing within the hydrocarbon system. A third apparatus3 was designed for use at higher pressures and temperatures than the earlier equipment would tolerate. This apparatus was of the variable volume type but was built in the general form of a U-tube, the mercury level being measured at the surface which was not exposed to the hydrocarbon system. This arrangement avoided the need of subjecting measuring equipment to the extremes of temperature at which studies were made, but it gave no provision for measurement of the volumes of individual phases. Although this last apparatus was satisfactory as to accuracy and convenience for many purposes, need was felt for measurements of the volume of the liquid phase of the hydrocarbon system. For this reason a fourth equilibrium apparatus was designed and constructed, and it is the purpose of the present paper to describe it. The equilibrium cell has a working range of temperature from 0° to 460°F at pressures up to 10,000 psi. Provision for measurement of both total volume and liquid-phase volume makes it particularly suitable for the equilibrium study of heterogeneous systems consisting either of simple mixtures or of complex field samples of hydrocarbons. I would like to talk to you today about microbiological leaching or, the solubilization of metal values due to the action of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Bacterial attack of sulfide minerals has been going on for centuries but only recently was it discovered that the acid and iron often found in coal mine drainage is produced by bacterial action on the iron sulfides in the coals. Not until 1950 was it proven that bacteria were playing a role in the dump leaching of sulfide ores. B. C. Research became involved in microbiological leaching in 1955 while examining mine drainage from the copper-zinc mine at Britannia Beach, north of Vancouver. Since 1955, B.C. Research has maintained a continuous re¬search program on microbiological leaching which, due to its applied nature, was put under industrial sponsorship in 1962. Most of the information pro¬vided in my talk today has been gathered under this sponsored research program and I would like to express our appreciation to the many sponsors who have made our work possible.

The operation of a modern coal preparation plant, particularly in western Canada, is a very complex task. Most western Canadian operations are processing two or more, sometimes up to ten, different seams through the same plant. This requires a sophisticated multi-circuit plant that needs close operational control. Add the soft nature and large amounts of natural fines of western Canadian coal and you have a formidable cleaning task. To assist in the operation, programmable controllers and sophisticated control concepts are being more widely used. Two of the newest coal preparation plants in Canada have been designed by Raymond Kaiser Engineers Inc. and its Canadian subsidiary, Phillips Barratt Kaiser Engineering, Ltd. The use of programmable controllers and control systems will be illustrated by showing their application in a "typical" western Canadian coal plant. This example will cover flowsheet design, control concept systems application, and possible future uses.

INTRODUCTION What I want to discuss is the future pattern of manpower in the mining industry, and I should like to begin by examining some relevant statistics. There are four areas that must be examined. Firstly, the future rate of production of different minerals must be estimated. Secondly, an assessment must be made of the balance of different mining technologies likely to be used for each mineral. Thirdly, the manpower requirements for each technology must be determined. The Privateer is the major mine of the Zeballos mining camp; with a total production from May 1937 through the first half of 1946 of $5; 610; 423 from 139; 254 tons of ore. This includes a small production from the connected Prident mine. The entire operation was closed from October 1943 to November 1945.

World copper electrowinning tankhouse plant practices have been surveyed. This survey is a supplement to previous surveys that have been carried out in 1995, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003. On a world basis, process technology trends include the further installation of automated electrode handling systems including permanent cathode systems, automated cathode handling machines, fully automatic cranes and polymer concrete cells. Designs also have included larger electrode sizes and higher electrolyte flows and current densities. Overall these trends have further resulted in optimized tank house productivities and improved electrowon cathode purity. Most greenfield copper electrowinning projects are occurring in South America and Central Africa.

Transmission of sound through the atmosphere is affected by local conditions. Anecdotal accounts of the sound of cannon fire traveling great distances go back to the Civil War. The Royal Society published a paper near the turn of the century concerning the reports from the cannons fired in London at the funeral of Queen Victoria. Early computers were used by the U.S. Army at Aberdeen in Maryland in the 1950’s to model airblast problems during munitions demolition. Today’s blaster has to have access to weather information beyond a simple local forecast. Surface winds, winds aloft and temperature profiles have a dominant role in neighbors reaction to blasting. Many ground vibration complaints are really airblast complaints. Blasters who maintain ground velocities under . 1 inches/ second are often perplexed by complaints from distant neighbors, even when local monitoring shows airblast to be under 110 dB. This paper will help the blaster identify warning signs of high airblast conditions.

The extractability for Pd(II) using MOTDA and DHS and their durability against a mixed solution of HNO3 and HCl was investigated by solvent extraction and FT-IR measurements. Both MOTDA and DHS selectively extracted Pd(II) over Pt(IV) from 0.75 M HNO32.25 M HCl solutions. The extraction rate of Pd(II) with MOTDA was much greater than that with DHS. In the durability test, the extraction percentage of Pd(II) and the FT-IR spectra were measured using MOTDA and DHS after stirring with 0.75 M HNO32.25 M HCl solutions. The extraction percentage of Pd(II) with MOTDA hardly changed during the two-month stirring; however, that with DHS decreased with an increase in the stirring time. The FT-IR spectra showed the sulfoxide formation by the oxidation of the sulfide in DHS, but not in MOTDA. Consequently, it was found that MOTDA is more durable than DHS.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulation 10 CFR 60 requires that the ventilation system for the geologic repository be designed to: (1) control the transport of radioactive particulates and gases, (2) assure continued function during normal operations and under accident conditions, and (3) separate the ventilation of excavation and emplacement areas. The ventilation system design should take into account thermal loading; maintenance of the retrieval option and-the separation of the development and emplacement ventilation circuits. An analysis was performed by NRC's contractor, Engineers International on the ventilation system design described in the Department of Energy's conceptual design for Nevada. The ventilation analysis is of a preliminary nature. The conclusions presented in this paper reflect the views of the authors and may not represent the views of the NRC. In this analysis, available Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigation (NNWSI) ventilation design information was reviewed and a ventilation network analysis was performed.

The coal-bearing areas of Kansas cover approximately 18,800 square miles (23 percent of the state's total area). Coal in Kansas ranges from lignite to high volatile bituminous, located principally in the south-eastern part of the state. Kansas reserves are estimated to be 987,500,000 tons, approximately 0.2 percent of U.S. reserves. Coal beds generally occur in thin seams up to five feet thick. The overburden-to-coal stripping ratios in Kansas are among the highest in the nation, typically 20 to 1, with some ratios up to 35 to 1. The first commercial coal mining operation in Kansas opened in 1865 at Fort Scott in Bourbon County. As in other states, coal production in Kansas increased during the industrial revolution, and then fell as industry converted to alternative fuels. Production peaked in 1916 and 1917, with annual production of 7,250,000 tons. Coal production today is by surface mining methods. The Kansas regulatory program was approved April 14, 1982; the Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 1, 1982; and the emergency program authority was approved January 10,1989.

The Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) is part of the Ottawa River Action Plan and will greatly reduce the frequency of sewage overflows into the Ottawa River during storms. The project consists of the design and construction of two TBM tunnels running EastWest (EWT) and NorthSouth (NST) along 6.2 km in total, and multiple shafts and support buildings. Contractor Dragados Tomlinson JV (DTJV) was awarded the 169 million CAD construction contract in 2016 and the CSST will be in operation in 2020. Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP), supported by Intecsa-Inarsa, was responsible for the detailed design of the precast concrete tunnel lining as well as the geotechnical risk management program. This paper addresses TBM selection, critical tunnel sections, geotechnical risk management and rock mass grouting as a geotechnical risk mitigation measure. Successful collaboration of Owner, Owner’s Engineer, Contractor and Contractor’s Engineer led to a safe and cost-effective design and construction

"Composite consisting of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) with short piassava fibers were prepared by extrusion process and their thermal and morphological behavior were investigated. The EVOH reinforced with 5 and 10 % of pi as sa va (Attaleafunifera Mart) fiber particle, based on the percentage weight ratio (wt %), untreated and treated with a commercial silane coupling agent, were prepared and the influence of fiber loading and the effect of chemical treatment on their thermal and morphological behavior were evaluated by SEM, DSC and TG analyses. Melt flow index (MFI) of the composites have been determined to evaluate the effects of fiber reinforcement on dynamic viscoelastic melt of the EVOH. In addition, piassava fibers characterization by SEM, FTIR, and organic and inorganic composition have also been carried out. The SEM results of the composites showed surface micrographs without microvoids and a good distribution, dispersion and compatibility between the fillers and the EVOH matrix. Concerning the piassava fibers characterization, the results showed that piassava has higher lignin content than cellulose and hemicelluloses, and around 0.7 % of ash with 52 % of silica (Si02). This high concentration of silica is consistent with the SEM analysis of the fiber that showed a large amount of ""silica rings"" encrusted on their surface.IntroductionLately, great worldwide interest has arisen in developing new technologies that enable the use of products with less environmental impact. Effort has been put into seeking natural modifier applications, particularly regarding the use of natural fibers. Special attention has been given to the use of natural vegetable fibers, because of the huge variety of species available. Such vegetable fibers are usually referred to as lignocellulosic materials [1]. This work evaluated the effects of piassava (Attalea funifera Mart.) fiber incorporation in an ethylene and vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH). The EVOH belongs to a family of copolymers with excellent gas barrier properties and resistance to organic compounds, which allow its application in different segments, from food packaging to gas tanks. However, EVOH is very sensitive to moisture, and in conditions of high humidity its gas barrier properties, thermal and mechanical properties are affected."
