During sulphide ore grinding, electrochemical interactions between grinding medium and the minerals play a significant role in bringing out enhanced ball wear on the one hand and alter the surface property of the ground minerals on the other. The role of the flotation reagents added simultaneously during grinding with respect to ball wear as well as flotation is yet to be established. Electrochemical measurements such as rest potential, combination potential and galvanic current between sulphide mineral and ball material couples have been carried out in the presence and absence of flotation reagents to understand the nature of electrochemical interactions between ball material and sulphide mineral. Electrochemical mechanisms and models have been proposed to explain the role played by the flotation reagents during different binary, ternary and quaternary interactions with respect to ball wear during grinding.

Discussion of the paper of W. H. HOWARD, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 92, August, 1914, pp. 2029 to 2046. EDGAR M. DUNN, Anaconda, Mont.-Mr. Howard's contribution to the literature on the Cottrell, method. of electrostatic precipitation of flue dust and fume at Garfield has been read by us with peculiar interest for the reason that we have been experimenting with the same process at Anaconda for the past eight or nine months, with a view to adapting it, under the direction of Dr. Cottrell and the supervision of J. 0. Elton. and D. R. Kellogg, representing the Anaconda Smelter Commission, to the treatment of very large volumes of gases, using large pipe treaters and various forms of electrodes, with about 150,000 volts rectified current. For the amount of gas to be treated here the 5-in. pipe means a cost for installation that is practically prohibitive, clue to the tremendous number of pipes required, and we have been trying to cut installation costs by increasing the size of the pipes. All of our work is still in the experimental stage, but we have obtained good clearance on our mixed roaster and converter gases with a 3-ft. pipe treater 20 ft. long, and with 5 ft. velocity therein; and with a discharge electrode of a single No. 29 nichrome wire set in the middle of the 3-ft. pipe, with. a consequent electrode spacing of 18 in. The current used has been 150,000 to -160,000 volts, .and of course there have been troubles galore, relating particularly to insulation and rectifying. Blast-furnace gases did not give so good clearance, probably due to relative poverty in moisture and S03 content of blast gases to roaster-converter gases; making the blast gases the poorer in conductivity. Our experience has been so satisfactory that in our next experimental plant-built on a somewhat larger scale-we shall attempt a 4-ft. treater with greater electrode spacing, and a somewhat higher voltage-up to 220,000. As to fractional precipitation, mentioned by Mr. Howard, this idea was tried out at Anaconda last year (1913). Formerly our furnaces (Bruntons) roasting flue dust for the recovery of white arsenic, passed so great an, amount of dust to the settling kitchens that refining of this arsenical product was necessary to eliminate the 5 to 20 per cent. dust contained therein. Consequently the manufacture of As203 was effected in two stages, with a reverberatory roast of the first .product to obtain the final 99.5 per cent. As203. -

THE great development of the mines and metallurgical works of this country during the last few years, accompanied as it has been by the investment of enor¬mous sums of money in purchasing lands, and in the erection of improvements, requires that advantage should be taken of the accumulated knowledge of engi¬neers, superintendents, and others, in mastering the problems which are con¬stantly presenting themselves for our action. Among those may be mentioned the consideration of more economical systems of mining in our coal and metal¬liferous mines, improved methods of transportation above and below ground, unwatering and ventilating mines, the mechanical preparation of coal and other minerals, the various metallurgical processes, and, in fact, every question tending to the attainment of two great objects 1st. The more economical production of the useful minerals and metals. 2d. The greater safety and welfare of those employed in these industries. In European countries, where the arts of mining and metallurgy have long been the subject of the most careful study, no means have been found so effectual in attaining the end above proposed as the free interchange of experience among those actually engaged in these industries, and this object has been accomplished, mainly, through the medium of institutes, associations or societies, composed of those engaged in these occupations, and by the- periodical publication of essays or papers, communicated to such societies by their members. It must be evident to all practical men that the interchange of the varied experience of those engaged in such occupations in this country could not fail to advance very materially the desired objects; it is, therefore, proposed to establish an American Institute of Mining Engineers, which will hold its meetings periodically in the great mining and metallurgical centres, where works of interest, such as mines, machine shops, furnaces, and other metallurgical works, can be inspected, and the members exchange their views, and consult for mutual advantage upon the difficulties encountered by each; these transactions or proceedings, when published, would form a most valuable and greatly-needed addition to our professional literature. It is proposed that a meeting of those sympathizing with the object above men¬tioned shall be called for the purpose of organizing such an association, the place and time of meeting being Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and the month of April or May. Communications indicating the opinion and wishes of all, both as to these points, and also as to the organization and objects of the Institute, will be gladly received by any of the undersigned, and a notice of the date of meeting, which will be arranged to suit the greater number, will be duly communicated. One of the main advantages of the supported liquid membrane(SLM) would be that different kinds of ions can be extracted selectively or simultaneously from multi-component solutions by parallel treatments with multi-SLM units. This distinctive feature of the SLM extraction is originated from its non-dispersive contacting operation between organic and aqueous phases. In this study, simultaneous and selective extractions of zinc and copper ions from their mixed solutions have been demonstrated using two parallel modules of SLMs. PC88A and LIX84 were used as the extractants for zinc and copper, respectively, and the Hoechst Celanese hollow fiber modules(Liqui-Cel Lab Module) as the supporters. The reconstruction of ocean history has been a major focus of marine research over the past decade. A significant outcome of these investigations is the recognition that certain types of marine mineral deposits are linked to regional to global scale changes in ocean composition and climate conditions. Manganese-bearing deposits are of particular interest in this regard because changes in their occurrence, distribution and/or composition are responsive to both biochemical and geological factors. Analyses of such deposits whose formation spans critical age/epoch boundaries thus provide clues concerning the interplay of different process during anomalous periods in Earth history. Recent studies demonstrating this deposit - event - process relationship include: (1) Changes in the bulk chemical composition of ferromanganese crusts during the Late Miocene-Early-Pliocene (-7-3 Ma) that coincide with a period of enhanced biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific upwelling zone; (2) The formation of large statiform manganese deposits at the Cenornanian- Turonian Boundary (-92 Ma) in association with widespread oceanic anoxia; and (3) Increased deposition of hydrothermal precipitates caused by tectonic reorganizations at the Paleocene - Eocene boundary (-55 Ma) that resulted in global-scale changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation and climate.

Various types of waves originate from a blast source to propagate through rock/soil media away from the blast. Input vibration to a structure depends on the soil-structure interaction which varies with the dynamic properties at the intersection as well as the stress and strain levels developed from the vibration of the structure-ground system. Hence it is important to study such effects on the response of a structure due to blast loads and this knowledge can be used in the design and control of blasts that are carried out close to buildings, highways and other structures.

The completion of the 3rd expansion at Queensland Alumina added 725,000 t.p.y. capacity to what was already the world's largest alumina refinery. Rated design capacity is now 2.0 million t.p.y. The expansion was achieved by adding a separate liquor circuit, interconnected with the old at strategic points. This effectively linked a new facility to the existing plant. The resultant problems in controlling plant flow highlighted problems which required considerable operator retraining. The process control problems caused by an inexperienced work force are discussed as are some of the solutions now under study at Q.A.L.

During the past three decades an ever increasing number of uses for underground storage space has been developed. In some instances, the value of the space created has been so great that the host rock has been wasted. The preferential use of salt to host underground cavities is based on numerous factors, the primary two being low extraction costs and low permeability. Both dry and solution mined cavities have been created for the storage of a variety of materials. As the demand for underground storage and disposal grows, so must our selectivity of the materials to be stored.

The Toquepala concentrator of the Southern Peru Copper Corp., located approximately 720 miles southeast of Lima near the Chilean border, processes 36,500 tons of ore daily containing between 0.50% and 3.00% copper. The molybdenite content in the ore also varies greatly, ranging from essentially nothing to as high as 0.15%. The 1966 yearly averages were approximately 1.20% copper and 0.03 % molybdenite. The three basic problems that plague the opera- tion of any molybdenite recovery plant are all present at Toquepala in large measures. Both the quantity of plant feed and the quantity of molybdenite contained in the plant feed are continuously changing. Even more detrimental to an efficient operation is the fact that the copper mineralization in the feed frequently changes once in every 24 hours and occasionally once a shift. From the point of view of the molybdenite plant metallurgist, there are four distinctive chalcopyrite concentrates and, at least, an equal number of chalcocite concentrates treated in the molybdenite recovery circuit. The various types of concentrates are distinguished mainly by their mineral content and how effectively the copper minerals are depressed by the different reagents used in the circuit.

An account is given of the production of three types of experimental high-chromium duplex stainless steel. The alloys had chromium contents of 22, 29, and 35 per cent. The partitioning of the main alloying elements between the austenite and ferite phases was determined, and the effect of the alloying elements chromium, nickel, and molybdenum on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the duplex stainless steels is summarized. The phase compositions of the different duplex stainless steels were measured by different techniques, and the values obtained were correlated. The cracking occasionally observed during the thermo mechanical processing of these alloys was studied, and is explained as being the result of known embritlement processes.

Recent technological breakthroughs in the fields of ceramics, medicine, aerospace engineering and electronics (semi- and superconductors) are constantly creating new uses and an ongoing increasing demand for a variety of rare valuable trace metals. These so-called high-tech elements such as hafnium (Hf), titanium (Ti,) niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), zirconium (Zr), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V) and the rare earth elements (REE), many of them of strategic importance, occur inter alia at elevated and potentially economic concentrations in marine ferromanganese nodules and ferromanganese crusts, making those deep sea deposits potential future resources of these metals. As these metals are mostly present in the lattice of the manganese and iron phases, which are strongly intergrown, rather than in separate mineral phases within the nodules and crusts (Koschinsky and Hein, 2003), reductive dissolution of the host phases is a prerequisite to release and dissolve the valuable metals. To evaluate the association of these rare valuable metals with their mineral carrier phases, sequential leaching experiments were carried out on selected samples in a first step in our project.

The uptake of copper from extremely dilute aqueous solutions by alginate in the form of protonated dry alginate beads was investigated. Barium was used to cross link the alginate forming the beads. The effect of various experimental parameters such as pH and metal ions concentration on the uptake of copper were studied. The uptake was strongly dependent on the Cu-bearing solution pH up to a value of 4.5. A removal of 100% o was achieved when the initial concentration of copper was as low as 8.0 mg/L. The maximum uptake, i, e., the loading capacity, was found to be 167 mg of copper per g of beads. The mechanism governing the removal of copper was found to be ion exchange between protons of the alginate beads and cupric ions of the solution. For this ion exchange process a molar ratio, d[H+]/d[Cu2+], of 2.0 was determined. EPMA-EDX analysis of the Cu-loaded beads showed a uniform distribution of the ions throughout the structure of the alginate, regardless the solution pH. This may suggest that this sorbent material is a porous ion exchanger having high permeability and capacity. The uptake of copper and of the heavy metals cadmium and zinc by this sorbent is compared.

In order to improve vibrations from quarry blasting, a new technique and timing pattern was established and applied to the particular geology. By shooting a single representative borehole one full second ahead of the production blast, a signature waveform can be isolated and analyzed. Multiple productionsignature blasts were performed. Encroaching residences require quarries to adjust their blasting techniques to reduce vibrations and raise frequencies. A signature hole inherently poses problems to quarries. Blasting one single hole from a production bench poses safety issues to wall stability; vibration issues to close neighbors; and budget issues to the quarry operator. Results showed that the new timing pattern reduced vibrations through timing optimization without a loss in quarry production. Therefore, this technique of vibration analysis employing a production-signature hole is successful in creating a timing pattern that meets the quarry’s goals.

Because the Australian resource industry differs from the resource industries of other countries, direct application of manpower planning processes derived from overseas experience may be singularly inappropriate for Australian projects. Too often in Australia, project manpower planning has been undertaken as an afterthought to technical and financial analysis. A wide variety of complex and interrelated manpower considerations should be evaluated from the beginning of project planning, even at feasibility study stage, and relevant deductions should be incorporated into all other planning. Many manpower factors can be considered sequentially but it is probably necessary to undertake critical path analysis for manpower planning. The paper highlights some key factors involved in project manpower planning and suggests a simple linear planning sequence which integrates the analysis of factors and can in turn be integrated into technical and financial planning.

Issues of deep-seabed mining are discussed since four decades and extensive efforts have been invested in oceanographic studies related to environmentally sound harvesting of polymetallic nodules. Because mining on the deep seafloor seems to range from large-scale, two-dimensional dredging or scooping up of the ore from the uppermost surface sediment layer to more localized drilling or deeper digging into a three-dimensional ore body, it appears to be justified to reconsider some concepts for environmental impact evaluation. Based on the experience gained during preceding years in environmental studies related to polymetallic nodule mining, some interrelated hypotheses and proposals will be presented. It is suggested that these proposals be considered in future plans for environmental impact evaluation and that observations on community re-establishment be conducted before massive sulphide mining or other ore extractions enter the commercial mining phase.

Flotation of coal after multistage addition of frother was found to yield coal fractions with significantly lower ash content as compared to the feed. Ignition and combustion characteristics of different coal fractions were evaluated using a differential thermal analyzer (DTA). A correlation between low ash content, low specific gravity, and high reactivity of coal was observed. It is suggested that in the ignition stage, removal of mineral matter enhances reactivity through the physical changes brought about by ash removal. A detailed analysis of pre-ignition kinetics indicated the possible effect of bulk density of coal in terms of resistance to volatile release and effective (available) surface area of coal. In the char combustion stage, mineral matter seems to influence reactivity through catalytic activity of surface concentrations of metal ions, ratio of combustible/non- combustible material, internal pore structure, and surface roughness.

The extraction performances exhibited by a phosphoric (D2EHPA), a phosphonic (Ionquest 801), a phosphinic (Cyanex 272) and a dithiophosphinic (Cyanex 301) acid derivative towards indium recovery from a diluted sulfuric solution are evaluated and compared. Equilibrium extraction isotherms were obtained. The chemical reactions involved and the approximate stoichiometry of the In(III) extracted species by the four ligands are presented and discussed. Stripping of In(III) from loaded D2EHPA and Ionquest 801 has been accomplished successfully, but has not been so effective from loaded Cyanex 301. Plots of %E vs. pH were established for D2EHPA, Ionquest 801 and Cyanex 301, denoting their behavior towards the extraction of similar mass concentrations of In(III), Fe(III), Fe(II) and Zn(II). Cyanex 301 is the least selective towards In(III), whereas D2EHPA and Ionquest 801, both for a pH = 0.5, do not extract Zn(II) at all.

The recent depressant research is summarized, and a new kind of depressant (SCO) has been put forward in this article. Using Na-oleate as a collector and SCO as a depressant, separation of dolomite and phosphate was studied. When SCO was added in the concentration range of 80 g/t to 2kg/t at pH 9.5 ± 0.2, dolomite was absolutely depressed, and apatite kept its floatability. Interestingly, in the mixture of phosphate and dolomite, the dolomite floated. The reasons for such a behavior are investigated through flotation and electrokinetic studies. It was found that the adsorption of dissolved species on dolomite and phosphate resulted in reverse flotation. A concentration of 31.59% P205 and 83.87% recovery of P205 was obtained from the mixture of phosphate and dolomite (2:1) with 26.6% P205 using 210 g/t SCO and Na-oleate 4.93*10-5 M at pH 9.

As partial implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM), Department of Interior, has requested each state to inventory hazardous abandoned mining areas within their boundaries. Primary interest is in such areas .as unstable waste-banks, subsidence and slumping, contamination of water supplies, and preservation of overall aesthetic qualities through reclamation. In addition to the concern expressed for abandoned mining areas, the legislation requires a complete inspection of operating mines quarterly and a partial inspection monthly. In Arizona copper has been mined for over 100 years and coal and uranium mining promises to expand in future years. The OSM requirement for a waste inventory and frequent monitoring of Arizona's large, widely spaced mines places a severe demand on limited personnel and operating budgets. Remote sensing by satellite provides an attractive and effective approach to aid the inventory and monitoring requirements of the OSM legislation.
