Reduction in the recovery time required and improvements in safety during a longwall face move have compelled coal mine operators to examine and use pre-driven longwall recovery rooms. The recovery entry is developed at the longwall stop position and supported ahead of time so that the required combinations of standing and internal sup-ports can be installed before the longwall face approaches. A calibrated three-dimensional finite element model, developed in conjunction with an underground test area, provided the critical components and design principals for a comprehensive parametric study. The study indicates that vertical, horizontal, and shear stresses concentrated on the outby abutment pillar corner of the recovery room resulting in deformations in the immediate roof above the primary roof support anchorage level. The results of the numerical model and field site observations indicated that the combination of the internal bolting system and the standing concrete supports are critical for the successful and safe extraction of the longwall equipment. Cable supports installed at and angle over the pillars can help stabilize the disturbed zone above the adjacent fender and outby pillars, however; standing supports are required in most sedimentary roof conditions to increase stability and assure a safe longwall extraction.

Various dump leach models have been developed by Kennecott, and these are reviewed with an eye toward production forecasting. Some of the models have been bated on first principles, utilizing the chemistry and physics of dump leaching. While providing considerable insight into the leaching process, these have proved to be too cumbersome for use in estimating production. Other models have been based on a declining leach rate for a single block of waste. These permit good short-term projections of solution grades and production, but are inflexible with regard to changes in mining parameters because the trends are based only on historical data. Therefore, a simple and flexible computer model has been developed to aid in leach production forecasting and to provide a tool for assessing the impact of different mining plans on leaching. This program, LEACH, is based on annualized blocks of waste; input parameters are described and examples of its use are given.

  Underground positioning and communication are essential technologies for the future of underground mining operations. In contrast to other positioning and communication technologies such as wireless local area network (WLAN) or radio frequency identification (RFID), ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology provides significant benefits like accurate and robust positioning of mobile machine equipment, which is indispensable for future autonomous systems in underground mining processes, such as production, transportation and auxiliary operations. Among these technologies, UWB offers many advantages, including higher accuracy, robustness, resistance against noise and multipath effects, and low power consumption [1,2]. Underground automation and localization systems benefit from these advantages and use the technology to improve efficiency and safety. There are many studies being carried out on this technology to increase the results’ accuracy, energy sufficiency and more. Two robust UWB modules that were developed for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations are introduced. The measurement results of tests carried out in an underground mine are discussed as well to confirm the functionality of the system.

Wet grinding rod mills have been used for 50 years to grind ores and to make specification sand. The application of wet grinding rod mills is well understood. Until recently, there have been very few installations of dry grinding rod mills. The selection of dry grinding rod mills follows the basic principles established for the selection of wet grinding rod mills. The basic Bond Formulae1 [ ] is used to select mills when using grindability test results as the basis for selection. W is multi- plied by the 1.3 wet to dry grinding factor established from wet and dry ball milling experience, and then by any other applicable inefficiency factors.1 Dry grinding rod mills have also been selected by scaling up bench scale continuous rod mill tests and pilot plant tests.

Liquid carbon dioxide can be used as a replacement for organic solvents in the extraction of anionic PGM complexes from an aqueous phase. This can be achieved only if highly carbon dioxide-soluble chelating agents are developed because conventional chelating agent-metal complexes, such as trioctylamine-gold chloride, are not soluble in liquid carbon dioxide (although trioctylamine is CO,-soluble). Our novel CO,-soluble chelating agents have a fluorinated tail and a conventional amine head group. Both the chelating agent and the chelating agent-metal complex are soluble at ambient temperature at pressures between 7-35 MPa. Equilibrium constants in the 105 range have been measured (in Freon 113, a low pressure screening liquid for carbon dioxide), indicating that these compounds will strongly bind the metal chloride. For example, 93% of Pt-chloride was extracted into Freon 113 using a 3.5:1I ratio of a double-tailed fluoroalkyl amine chelating:metal chloride. 88% recovery of Pt-chloride into liquid carbon dioxide was achieved using the same chelating agent at a 3.5:1 ratio.

A numerical procedure to model flow networks using a node-based approach is discussed, and the analysis encompasses both steady-state and transient solutions. A family of computer codes has been developed using the node-based approach. This technique is illustrated by applying two of the computer codes to mine ventilation networks.

Adsorption of residual flotation reagents onto equilibrium fluid cracking catalysts is a promising method of purification of flotation process water. In the present paper, adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), dodecyl ammonium chloride (DAC) and sodium oleate onto a spent catalyst from petroleum industry was studied by analysing the residual concentration of the surfactant after contact with the zeolite catalyst. The adsorption of the DAC was rather low but SDS and sodium oleate presented a high affinity for the catalyst surface. The loading capacity was 4.2 kg/ton for SDS and 5.5 kg/ton for oleic acid. After the treatment of the loaded catalyst with a HCI 1 N solution these surfactants are desorbed and the catalyst may thus be regenerated. This would be an additional advantage to its low cost, not to mention its condition as a discarded product and its availability in large tonnages.

At a Fertilizer plant located in the southern part of India, 74 numbers of pump foundations have shown non-uniform settlements causing the tilting of pump foundations under self-weight primarily due to the presence of varying thickness of the heterogeneous subsoil beneath the pump foundations and soil erosion because of water seepage through deeper excavations in the close vicinity. Various corrective measures have been explored and taking due cognizance of the prevailing subsoil conditions, site constraints, and constructability aspects, micropiling has been adopted. This paper presents the site problem and details of remedial measures adopted for rehabilitation of the distressed pump foundations. The main objective of this paper is to provide guidelines for designer during design and detail engineering stage to avoid similar nature of problems and also to provide a solution concept to tackle similar nature of problem(s) if encountered at site.

The paper presents new developments of the methodology of open pit coal production scheduling optimisation. They deal with the specific features of the exploitation of single coal seam and utilisation of truck-shovel and dragline systems. A production scheduling optimisation model is developed as a linear programming problem. The objective function maximises the net present value of the mining project under the technological constraints for meeting the demand function of the coal processing plant and effective utilisation of the available production equipment. Both principles of mine planning, coal quality optimisation and waste deferment are incorporated in the model. Results of a case study are provided to illustrate the applicability of the optimisation model.

THE Musconetcong tunnel is situated in New Jersey, near the line of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, about twelve miles from Easton, on the Easton and Amboy Railroad, the latter being the extension of the Lehigh Valley Railroad to tide-water. Up to the present time, the terminus of the Lehigh Valley Railroad has been at Phillipsburg, N. J., opposite Easton, passengers connecting there with New York by the Morris and Essex (D. L. and W.) and New Jersey Central lines; freight and coal being forwarded by the Morris and Essex to tide-water at Hoboken, and by the Central Railroad to Elizabethport and Port Johnson ; also, by the Belvidere and Delaware connections through Trenton to South Amboy.

A classification of natural objects is usually based either upon some fundamental and permanent attribute of the thing itself (as in the case of scientific classifications), or it embraces one or more generalizations convenient for use in ordinary life. Thus, it suffices for the statistician to know that so many tons of fish are annually taken by our fishermen, and that they realize so many thousands of dollars, whereas to the student of natural history the anatomy, habits, and relationships of the animals are of chief interest, as settling their respective places in the scale of animate nature. Many different classifications of coals have been attempted, as one would naturally anticipate from the immense extent of the coal trade, and the different localities whence the supply was derived. The English divisions were prevalent up to the date of the publication of the last geological survey of the State, except so far as they were modified by local designations. Indeed, Rogers' classifications made very little alteration in the English nomenclature, as may be seen by comparing the tables given below. Mine dewatering has long been a problem with mines and some of the shallowest mines have the biggest problems. Machinery was developed by the ancients for raising water by rope buckets with treadmills or by horse whim. From the 1700's on into the early part of this century, massive cornish pumps or equivalent were the vogue powered by steam. One Australian mine pumping system was claimed to be the largest in the world just after the turn of the century. It was installed at Beaconsfield in Tasmania and the mine, like so many other mines of the period, were beaten by problems and cost associated with mine dewatering. The owners of that mine are looking at the feasibility of dewatering using surface drilled wells. Much simpler and smaller pumps are the order now and it is feasible to use boreholes instead of shafts to contain the pumps or else to use the holes to convey discharge waters to the surface from pumps located in drives or stopes.

Remote operation of continuous mining machines has enhanced the health and safety of underground miners in many respects; however, numerous fatal and non-fatal continuous miner struck-by accidents have occurred. In an effort to prevent these injuries, NIOSH researchers at Pittsburgh Research Laboratory studied the workplace relationships between continuous miner operators and various tramming tasks of the equipment using motion capture data, operator response times, and field of view data to evaluate the factors influencing operator-machine struck-by events (contact with a solid object) in a virtual mine environment. It is not feasible (nor ethical) to use human subjects to directly evaluate factors that precipitate such injuries. However, use of motion analysis data and digital human models can facilitate analysis of struck-by accident risk by allowing investigators to manipulate factors that influence injury. Factors included in this study included machine speed, direction of escape, the direction the operator was facing relative to the machine, work posture, distance from machine, and operator anthropometry. Close proximity to the machine, high machine tramming speeds, a right-facing orientation and operator positioning near the tail all resulted in high risk of being struck.

"Today there is a growing demand for strip of superior steels with specifically tailored technological properties. Especially strips of high-strength, micro-alloyed steel grades applied to manufacture longitudinally and spiral-welded pipes are a growth market. Tubes are generally required to have high strength and sufficient toughness values and thus favour specific hot strip microstructures. The correlation of chemical analysis, process parameters and mechanical properties with microstructural features is still a challenging task. During the last decades, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) have become useful tools for the characterization of complex microstructures. The EBSD data provides an immense variety of post-processing possibilities, e.g. related to grains, grain boundaries, misorientations or texture. This paper highlights the results of an advanced analysis of microstructures representing industrial produced hot-rolled strips and presents an approach to define and quantify some essential microstructural parameters.IntroductionHigh-strength microalloyed steels have been used for the production of welded pipes for more than 30 years. However, the alloy design of pipeline grades is being continuously modified and the process technology optimized because of the increasing high strength-toughness combination requirement for pipeline steels. Compact strip production (CSP®) technology is an upcoming promising route for the production of high-quality pipeline steel grades [1]."

The waves of prospectors who struggled across the wide Alaskan wilderness between 1898 and 19 10 came close to but did not actually find the rich copper/zinc/silver deposits strung out along 161 km ( 100 miles) of felsic schist in the remote Brooks Range of northwestern Alaska. They had heard rumors of gold in the valley of the Kobuk River, so they skirted the Arctic ice pack in the Chukchi Sea and, in a force at least 800 men strong, ascended the Kobuk River in 1898. Twenty-eight placer mining camps were established but only a handful survived for more than a few years. One of the placers that died rapidly was Ruby Creek. A map showing the location of Alaskan mineral deposits is given in Fig. 1. The Ruby Creek miners, disappointed with the scarcity of gold in that creek, followed copper-bearing float to two places where the float was especially plentiful. Pits, a short adit, and a shallow shaft uncovered copper carbonates, bornite, and chalcopyrite in fractured limestone but the remoteness of the district blocked efforts to sell the claims or to raise capital for development. Shortly after 1906, the copper prospects were abandoned and, except for an account published in 1913 by the US Geological Survey, they were forgotten, as were the names of the prospectors.

Political and general economical reforms have attracted the attention of the public and business world, but mining men have had no information as to the situation in their branch of industry, as various articles which have appeared in the European and American press gave little information as to actual conditions in our country. The power of the Soviets did not affect the Ural provinces nor Ukraine or Asiatic Russia (Siberia, Turkestan, etc.) during 1918 and 1919, and, as is well known, the mineral wealth of the republic lies within those boundaries. In the Ural Mountains are copper, gold, and platinum; in Siberia, silver, lead, zinc, and gold, and the coal deposits in Koushetz district; in Ukraine, there are the coal fields of Donetz and the iron mines of Krivvy Rog, and silver, lead, zinc, copper, oil, etc. in the Cauca-sus. The mineral resources of Central Russia are the coal fields of Moscow (low-grade and brown coal), turf deposits, iron mines in Tula and Kalonga provinces, and quarries of granite and other building materials.

SINCE the development of dispersion-hardenable lead-antimony alloys1 in the laboratories of the Western Electric Co., Inc., studies have been made of the effect of various third constituents on these alloys.2 This paper covers a study of the effect of small amounts of arsenic. This element is important since it occurs as an impurity in many commercial antimonial leads and the results obtained are particularly interesting as indicating a class of addition agents which exert a stabilizing effect on dispersion-hardened alloys. EXPERIMENTAL In order to-study the effect ,of increasing amounts of arsenic, a series of alloys were made up containing 1 per cent. antimony, and arsenic varying from 0. to 0.10 per cent., the balance Doe Run lead (99.997 per FIG. 1..-CHANGE OF MICRO-BRINELL HARDNESS WITH TIME OF 1 PER CENT. In a mineral processing plant, the determination of a preventive maintenance schedule is one of the most important maintenance policies. In this study, to determine the preventive maintenance schedule for the Emet Colemanite Mineral Processing Plant in Turkey, a mean quality control chart was constructed using the historical concentrate B2O3 grade data. The effect of preventive maintenance scheduling on B2O3 grades was monitored using the mean quality control chart. It was determined that recovery increased after each preventive maintenance scheduling. Close examination of the mean quality control charts indicated that there were three periods that showed different grade characteristics. These were identified as the period ?prior to preventive maintenance,? the period ?after preventive maintenance? and the period ?requiring preventive maintenance.? These periods were compared as two independent samples by using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Application of this test for interpretation of the mean quality control chart enabled the authors to analyze the system effectively, and it showed that the preventive maintenance for this plant should be scheduled at four-month intervals.
