GRACE mine and mill, owned by Bethlehem-Cuba Iron Mines Co. and operated by Bethlehem Cornwall Corp., are being developed to produce 9600 tons of 42 ½ pct Fe magnetite ore, to yield 5760 tons per day of agglomerated iron concentrates averaging 65 pct Fe. Located about 14 miles south of Reading, the property is ideally situated in relation to good highways and railroad. Three major steel plants, at Bethlehem, Steelton, and Sparrows Point, Md., are about equidistant from the mine. Discovery of the orebody resulted from an airborne magnetometer survey, completed in 1948, con¬sisting of 7000 lineal miles of flight lines spaced one-fourth of a mile apart and extending from the Delaware River on the east to Gettysburg, Pa., on the west. After examining the magnetic maps, Bethlehem's geologists made limited surface traverses over the Grace mine and Warwick area to check the location, and realtors were engaged to purchase the desired properties over and adjacent to the area showing favorable indication of ore.

Mansfield Canyon, of the Wrightson Mining District, Santa Cruz County, Coronado National Forest, Arizona, was actively mined in the late 1800's and early 19001s, with minor activity until 1953. The main products were lead, silver, copper, zinc, and gold occurring in polymetallic quartz veins. The canyon contains numerous adits and waste dumps, some of which generate metal-loaded acid. Samples of seeps, waste dumps and bedrock have been collected for various analyses: metal concentrations, acid base accounting (ABA), and water quality to evaluate the extent of oxidation and metal release from the start of mining until present, the potential impact, and reclamation options. Although the waste-rock piles within the canyon are small (2,000-10,000 tons), they have a high sulfide content with little or no neutralizing capacity. It is planned, therefore, to move the waste piles either to a constructed repository site within the canyon or to a copper leach facility to be used as an acid generator.

Orebodies that contain more than one economically important mineral are generally evaluated by parametric cut-off grades. This approach often leads to mis-valuation of mineral deposits because cut-off grades are not based on the grades of each individual mineral and, because of the parametric formulation, are only indirectly related to the individual grade distributions. The only realistic approach is a formulation that accounts separately for each component mineral. The grid search method can be used as a means of multi-mineral cut-off grade optimization in this context. This paper describes the use of the grid search method in cut-off grade optimization for multi-mineral deposits. The authors introduce the general concepts of the method and formulate its application to cut-off grade optimization; they describe a software implementation of the method that can accommodate cut-off grade optimization for mineral deposits that contain up to three economic minerals. An instrumentation program was developed based on the results of an analytical study of the geomechanical effects of longer longwall face lengths. Boundary element simulations showed that longer face lengths can cause in- creased face convergence and an increase in the shear stresses in the immediate roof. Empirical design methods predict that longer faces will cause little effect on abutment stresses as long as the roof caving is well behaved. On this basis, a longwall face instrumentation program was designed with emphasis on the interaction between face support and ground response for optimizing face conditions. At a 600-foot (183 m) face, five midface shields and two headgate shields were monitored with vary- ing hydraulic pump pressure. The instrumentation included six convergence rods with linear potentiometers to measure canopy-to-toe convergence; fourteen pressure transducers to monitor leg pressures; and two portable data loggers. Similar instrumentation will be in- stalled on a 750-foot (229 m) face for comparison. The results from the 600-foot (183 m) face indicate that a ground reaction curve, as determined from the relationship between the sup- port set pressure and the roof convergence, can be used to optimize the support pressure to control convergence, the key element to ground stability in the face area.

The implementation of a process information management system (PIMS) is to provide a single online, real-time information system. This system provides a unique and completely open view for everyone, based on the key business drivers. It is structured around the three key concepts: process, maintenance and stocks. It combines numerous applications and provides accessibility to common tools and reports, through a web-based user interface, for every one from the floor operator to the General Manager. This æunique and commonÆ view displays raw, online process information that provides a quick health check of the operation at a glance, highlighting areas that require further investigation. The system is based on a hierarchical system of views, from the overview of the whole plant flow sheet to the more detailed operational shop view. It provides a synthetic view between continuous and batch operations, enabling the tracking of each batch produced. The batch view displays the critical batch components, and a comparison with each component of an ideal batch. This enables detailed analysis of each batch to identify areas of improvement. The information system will consist of an online reconciliation of stocks and flow data. This enables focus on the recovery of each process unit on a regular basis. This paper discusses the design strategy for the Process Information Management System, to ensure a unique and open view on the key business drivers is achieved and implemented successfully.

Drilling operations on the Gulf of Mexico continental shelf are following two general plans. The first plan placed all buildings. equipment, and materials on a large platform while the second copies Lake Maracaibo drilling methods by placing a minimum of equipment on the platform and using a floating drilling tender or drill barge anchored adjacent to the platform in an attempt to take maximum advantage of flotation in an effort to reduce costs. A complete power rig, mud pits, pipe racks, and small auxiliaries have been placed on the platform as shown in Figure 1, to assure proper handling of drilling operations under the most adverse weather. This has the economic advantages of eliminating the fabrication of a large structure, a material reduction of rigging up time on each structure. and elimination of delay time on equipment while quarters and equipment placed on the tender are being rigged up. These factors have certainly proved their economic value in drill barge operations in the Louisiana and Texas coastal area. Naturally the heart of such an operation is the anchorage. This anchorage, to permit taking advantage of maximum economies. must hold the ship in a relatively fixed position under the following weather conditions: (1) Winter northwesters (2) Southeasterly gales (3) Severe rain squalls In hurricane weather all operations must be suspended regardless of method of operation and the floating tender will, if possible, be moved to a protected location. However, in case of an emergency the floating tender should be prepared to swing with the wind and seas on a single anchor as there is considerable doubt that either ship or anchorage could withstand the severe strains imposed by fixed anchorage in hurricane weather. Northwesters are reported to have developed wind gust velocities as high as sixty miles per hour and steady winds of approximately forty-five miles per hour. Fortunately these winds do not travel a great distance over water before arriving at our location, and, while they can possibly develop seas approximately eight feet high, the waves are short, and if taken on the bow or stern of a ship 250 feet or more in length they should not present a difficult problem. On the other hand southeast gales having a long fetch and maximum steady wind velocities of approximately thirty miles per hour can possibly develop long swells approximately twelve feet in height. These should develop the most severe anchorage problem. To combat these waves any workable anchorage plan should permit maneuvering the ship in such a manner as to head the bow or the stern into the seas and still maintain contact with the structure. Rain squalls develop wind gust velocities as great as sixty miles per hour. However, they are local and the seas have not been a source of great trouble. To permit continuous operation the anchorage must be able to withstand these winds broadside to the ship as the wind direction often changes radically in a very sliort time. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) is commencing a project to develop a National Minerals Information System (NMIS) for New Zealand . Initially, the NMIS project will focus on providing public access via a web site to existing minerals related databases maintained by GNS and some other organisations. Core components are geological maps, GERM (Geological Resource Map), REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry), PETLAB (rock catalogue), GEOCHRON (radiometric ages), mineral deposit models, mineral deposit profiles and 3D mineral deposit GIS databases. In addition to developing the web site, the project will include upgrades of some of the databases and the production of derivative products such as mineral resource and prospectivity assessments, and mineral inventories.

Fly ash samples were collected from two large lignite-fired power plants of Ptolemais region, northern Greece. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) was applied for the characterisation of the samples. ESEM coupled with Energy Dispersive System (EDS) provided fast and accurate results on the morphology, mineralogy and chemical composition of the fly ash particles. Fly ash consists mainly of aluminosilicate glass, silicates, oxides-hydroxides, sulphates, carbonates and char. Various types of chars, spheres (e.g. ferrospheres, cenosphers, plerospheres etc.), spheroids, agglomerates and mineral crystalls were observed. The size distribution of the fly ash particles was correlated with their mineralogical and chemical composition. Possible environmental impacts and potential utilization is also discussed in this study.

The energetics of CO and CO2 hydrogenation to methanol were studied on a gold surface via periodic and cluster DFT calculations. CO hydrogenation appears to be much easier than CO2 hydrogenation on an Au(111) surface. The use of a cluster model does not seem to improve the energetics of CO2 hydrogenation. It is concluded that an active support (e.g. ZnO) will be required to increase the productivity of a gold surface towards synthesis gas conversion. The energetics of CO and H2 adsorption are improved on the cluster model compared to a slab model of an Au(111) surface, suggesting that nanosized gold particles may be beneficial in CO hydrogenation.

Bellows Connector Fabricated of chemically inert Teflon, the new bellows type connector has many pipe line applications where vibration, expansion and electrolysis exist in the handling of corrosive liquids or gases and solvents. The new connector is electrically non-conductive, flexible even at 94°F and as strong as 480°F as at 70°F, according to the manufacturer. This bellows connector serves as a [ ] vibration dampener as well as an expansion joint and connects misaligned couplings and insulates flanges electrically. Michoacan?s beach sands with interesting concentrations of ilmenite were studied to produce titanium by hydrometallurgical techniques. Nevertheless, among titanium species, there are different additional components of Michoacan?s beach sands which could be of interesting applications. Some of them are likely to be applied for the manufacture of nanocrystalline ceramics. Although, the most applied mineral dressing to treat these kind of sands, that contain magnetic species (i.e., ilmenite, magnetite), is a combination of gravity separation and magnetic separation, it could be of a great deal of benefit to apply the information regarding the surface characteristics of the sands? components, in order to study the application of flotation technologies to separate selectively those species with commercial value.

The recovery of gold from cyanide liquors is frequently effected by using activated carbon. Process economics however require non destructive methods of gold extraction from the carbon so that it may be recycled.Stripping at atmospheric pressure usingthe method of Zadra et al(l) suffers from the disadvantage of unfavourable kinetics with strip times of the order of 48-72 hours. Subsequent research has led to development of processes which strip the gold more rapidly namely: A.A.R.L. process, (2,3) organic solvent (4,5,6) and pressure stripping (7,8)This paper reports on a development of the pressure stripping technique in which stripping and electrowinning are carried out at elevated temperature and pressure.

An Interstate Mining Commission organized in Raleigh, N. C., on April 27 still has no offices, no budget and only four members, but it could spell the beginning of the end for the state-to-state environmental control variations that have lately been con- founding the mining industry. Established by Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, the new organization is committed to protecting land, water and other resources through improved strip and other mining practices. In pursuit of this end, it has broad authority to study all mining activities affecting the environment and to recommend improvements in mining practices and in laws regulating the mining industry. The Startup The Commission was created under an interstate Mining Compact enacted in the 1960's by the legislatures of the four member states. According to the rules of this Compact, the Commissioners in the new organization are, ex officio, the governors of the member states-namely, Chairman Louie B. Nunn (Ky.), Vice Chairman Robert W. Scott (N.C.), David Hall (Okla.) and Milton J. Shapp (Pa.). Each Commissioner, however, must appoint an advisory body to counsel him in matters relating to Commission business and delegate one member of this body to act as his alternate. Each advisory body must include representatives of mining, conservation and other public and private interests.

Longwall Technology has a potential of resulting in safety and productivity improvements of U.S. underground coal mining similar to those experienced by the introduction of continuous miner systems. The study presents a comprehensive national evaluation of longwall technology to assess the potential of longwalls to improve health and safety and coal productivity. The study was conducted by the authors during the spring of 1980 as part of MSHA New Technology Coordination activities and with a view to examine the factors that may limit the acceptance of longwall technology in the U.S. coal mining operations. The study points out areas where adjustments need to be made in MSHA regulations and enforcement to help Longwalls. A two-entry longwall system appears to offer a practical method of improving underground coal productivity and safety. Applying regulations that are primarily designed for room and pillar methods to longwall mining, in some instances, reduces the effectiveness and productivity benefits feasible by new technology application. Controlling dust is the single predominant problem in the design and operation of longwalls in the United States. The results of this study points out a need for a coordinated program between government and industries on dust control technologies for examining acceptable technological options to control dust in longwalls without restraining the production capability of the system.

Productivity improvements in underground mining are becoming harder to find. Most mines quickly identify deficiencies in their processes and then struggle to make productivity gains beyond that plateau. One way to increase productivity in this situation is to modify existing methods of operation. Vale?s Stobie Mine has been in operation since the late 1800?s employing a variety of mining methods. Many mining advances have been incorporated over time. With the advent of mechanized rubber tired equipment, sublevel cave mining was introduced to allow economic extraction of a large low grade area. Additional productivity gains were seen in the sublevel cave area with the introduction of preloading production drill holes. In preloading, the holes are loaded with bulk emulsion ahead of the production cycle and then primed for blasting as needed. The introduction of preloading, although giving the Stobie sublevel cave process an overall productivity gain, saw an increase in oversize due to the collar priming technique employed. Handling oversize material prohibited the operators from handling additional units of optimally sized material. Prepriming, adding detonators at the toe and midcolumn of the production holes during the preloading process, was identified as a change that could reduce the formation of oversize. This paper describes the introduction of prepriming to the sublevel cave mining method and focuses on the process Stobie employees followed to ensure a safe transition to this productivity improvement.

A Bureau of Mines method for recovering nickel, cobalt, and copper from low-grade domestic laterites is described, which includes the unit operations of solvent extraction and electrowinning. Previous Bureau work indicated that addition of Na2S04 (sodium sulfate) to the nickel electrolyte improved current efficiency in nickel electrowinning. The present study determines the compatibility of Na2S04 with nickel strip-ping in the solvent extraction operation of the Bureau method. The effect of adding 100 g/l Na2S04 on nickel stripping, phase disengagement, and pH was determined in comparative laboratory-scale tests. In continuous-circuit testing, Na2S04 reduced stripping efficiency to the extent that five, instead of four, strip stages were required for complete stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent. In tests made in a phase-disengagement cell that had a variable settler area, the addition of Na2S04 did not significantly affect phase separation characteristics. The pH of the nickel electrolyte in the temperature range of 20° to 65° C was also unaffected by the addition of Na2S04. An economic evaluation showed that the energy saved by adding Na2S04 to the electrolyte would more than offset the cost of adding another stripping stage.

It is proposed that battery grade MnO2 can be produced directly from a manganese ore from Azul Mine in Brazil, by leaching with HCI to remove heavy metals selectively. We are working to find a way of selectively separating Cu, Ni, Co, Pb and Fe from the resulting acidic manganese chloride solution, to detoxify it and produce marketable chloride solution. Chelating ion exchange resins are proving more promising for this separation than solvent extraction with commercially available reagents. Results from batch and column ion exchange tests that characterize the behavior of copper, nickel, cobalt, lead and iron are reported.

Environmental conflict between the public and private sectors, including mining, is highly visible and often based on deeply divergent environmental, social, and economic values. In order to achieve sound public policies by government, scientifically rigorous and objective analyses of mining’s impacts are demanded. Material flows accounting and analysis, linked with other data to generate indicators of environmental, social, and economic impacts of mining activity are means toward providing cogent input into public policy-making on key issues. This paper will present a material flows analysis scheme for the coal industry and recommend derived, objective indicators of coal mining’s impact on society.
