No mystery shrouds the discovery of chromium. The indefatigable French chemist Vauquelin, in reporting his discovery of this chemical element to 1'Institut National in 1798, concluded his discourse with the statement: "I place before the eyes of the Institute a small quantity of chromium and several of its most re- markable combinations." Working with the so-called "red lead of Siberia, Vauquelin not only prepared numerous chemical compounds of the new metal, but he reduced the oxide to the metallic state. These chemical compounds possessed a variety of remarkably distinctive colors; so, acceding to suggestion, Vauquelin named the new element chrome (chromium), a derivative of the Greek word chroma, meaning color. Siberian "red lead" (crocoite) was not plentiful; however, it was not long before Vauquelin's prediction was realized that the chemical compounds of chromium would become useful in the arts when sources of chromium became more readily available. Although chrome-iron ore (chromite) became obtainable in France, the United States and elsewhere during the early part of the nineteenth century, it is interesting to note that from 1828 to about 1860, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and others of the eastern United States furnished almost the entire chrome-ore requirements of the world. A CLASSIFICATION of natural objects is usually based either upon some fundamental and permanent attribute of the thing itself (as in the case of scientific classifications), or it embraces one or more generalizations convenient for use in ordinary life. Thus, it suffices for the statistician to, know that so many tons of fish are annually taken by our fishermen, and that they realize so many thousands of dollars, whereas to the student of natural history the anatomy, habits, and relationships of the animals are of chief interest, as settling their respective places in the scale of animate nature. Many different classifications of coals have been attempted, as one would naturally anticipate from the immense extent of the coal trade, and the different localities whence the supply was derived. The English divisions were prevalent up to the date of the publication of the last geological survey of the State, except so far as they were modified by local designations. Indeed, Rogers' classifications made very little alteration in the English nomenclature, as may be seen by comparing. the tables given below. Gold prices are rising, in what is coming to be seen as the beginning of a longer term upward trend. After languishing between $325/oz and $364/ oz from early 1991 into early 1993, prices began rising in the first half of 1993. Gold rose from a low of $326/oz in March 1993 to $414/oz on an intraday basis in early August. There was a speculative sell-off at that point, which took gold prices quickly back down to $350/oz briefly in October 1993. At that time, there still was a fair degree of skepticism about gold's price prospects. Many banks believed that gold prices could not mount a sustained rally. As prices dropped in August and September of last year, these suspicions seemed to be confirmed. Gold prices quickly rebounded, however, reaching $395/oz by early January 1994. The strength of this renewed increase led many banks, investors and others that had held negative views of gold to grow more positive. They began buying gold and trading it from the long side of the market. The result was that gold prices remained strong during the first quarter of 1994, trading between $375/oz and $390/oz.

The platinum group metals (PGM's) are typically recovered by flotation, smelting of the flotation concentrate to matte, and matte leaching. Concentrates too low grade to be processed economically by the conventional process require a new treatment route. PLATSOL, a new pressure leach process, was developed for the Northmet deposit and dissolves in one step base and precious metals (PGM's and gold). Various options exist to recover all pay metals from the leach liquor. The preferred option to date involves a solid-liquid separation, followed by sulphide precipitation of gold and the PGM's, and copper solvent extraction using commercial solvent extractants. This paper briefly summarises the process and the effect of the main leach parameters. Application of the PLATSOL process to various feedstocks is also presented.

Section 516 of Public Law (PL) 95-87, commonly known as the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), requires that underground coal mine operators must 'adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material damage to the ex- tent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonable foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predict- able and controlled manner..." Implied in the constraints of Section 516 (b) (1 of SMCRA is a determination of what constitutes "material damage" to surface structures and renewable resource lands, and the capacity for sequential land use following underground mining. This Study was undertaken in an attempt to provide quantitative guidelines for estimating material damage to a wide variety of surface structures and renewable resource lands. Surface structures studied included buildings, bridges, railroads, highways. pipe- lines, d~, embankments, and water reservoirs. Damage criteria for buildings developed in this study along with details of the adopted methodology have been presented elsewhere (Bhattacharya et al.) (1). and will not be repeated here. Similar guidelines for renewable resource lands have also been discussed (Singh and Bhattacharya) (2)

During the design phases of a conveyor system, the question arises regarding the type of drive required for each application. The paper shows that the correct drive for any particular application is the one that satisfies the criteria established for that application in the most economical manner consistent with such considerations as site location, availability of spare parts, area environmental conditions, power supplies available, etc. Following discussions of various mechanical arrangements for the drives, motor types and their characteristics are considered along with the control means of modifying these characteristics to satisfy individual requirements. These characteristics are all illustrated graphically. After selecting the motor and its starter, control accessories and interlocking arrangements as applied to material handling systems are discussed.

MINERAL pigments give color, opacity, or body to paint, stucco, plaster, mortar, cement, linoleum, rubber, and similar materials. They must be finely divided, substantially insoluble, and generally inert for such uses. Inorganic pigments may be grouped somewhat arbitrarily as follows: A. Natural mineral pigments dug from the earth. 1. Those consisting mostly of iron oxides, such as hematite and Limonite. 2. Those containing large amounts of clay or noncoloring matter, such as ocher, sienna, umber, and colored shales. 3. Those whose color is not due to iron oxide, such as Vandyke brown (including sap brown, an alkali extract of Vandyke brown), graphite, and terre verte. B. Synthetic pigments. 1. Those containing iron oxide as the essential coloring matter, such as "pure" reds, yellows, and blacks, and Venetian reds. 2. Those not containing iron oxide, such as lithopone, zinc white, titanium white, ultramarine, Prussian blue, and the like. Only groups A and B-1 are discussed here. All the pigments in those two categories, except Vandyke brown, sap brown, and some of the carbonaceous slates, contain, as their essential color constituents, one or more compounds of iron; namely, an oxide-Limonite (2Fe203.H20 to Fe203.4H20), hematite (Fe203), or magnetite (Fe203.FeO). Man's first permanent coloring materials were earth pigments- the ochers, iron oxides, and various iron-stained clays. The caves occupied by prehistoric man and the arts of the ancient Chaldean, Egyptian, and Cretan civilizations bear mute witness to this and also testify to the beauty and permanence of earth colors. As the Roman era developed, earth pigments were pushed from their pre-eminent position by white lead and red lead and in the Middle Ages by zinc oxide. COBALT is a silvery white metal with a slight bluish cast. It strongly resembles nickel in its appearance and properties, notably its resistance to corrosion, although its alloys with other metals differ decidedly in their properties from those of nickel. The name "cobalt" was derived from the German Kobold, meaning goblin, and this came to be applied to the cobalt minerals which, although they resembled ores, did not readily yield metal when smelted by the primitive processes available in the Middle Ages. Cobalt minerals were used as pigments by potters and glass- workers before the Christian era. Cobalt blue glass was found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients were entirely unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt and the metal itself was not isolated until about the middle of the eighteenth century, by Brandt, although the preparation of cobalt compounds had been carried on in a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits at Schneeberg, Germany, in 1470. By the middle of the nineteenth century, several firms in England were engaged in the refining of cobalt products and the consumption of cobalt oxide in the British ceramic industry in the year 1866 had reached 67,000 lb. In the fields of geotechnical engineering and slope management, various software packages are used to assess the behaviour or propensity for a slope to fail. Traditional kinematic analysis calculates the probability of failure of design sectors with respect to dominant structural set orientations. A novel methodology is provided here to view potential hazardous slope behaviour in 3D, allowing engineers to make informed decisions regarding various pit slope geometries. Apparent dips are calculated for every point in space with respect to every slope orientation of the entire pit surface/design, specifically in reference to bench and inter-ramp planar failure mechanisms. Implementing a proactive approach to slope design will not only lead to early mitigation of risk but can also add direct value by enhancing or improving upon slope angles for earlier access to ore. From a safety perspective, identification of unfavourably oriented slope geometries can be dealt with before failure occurs. This methodology relies on a strong understanding of the existing rock mass anisotropy, particularly behind the face, thereby removing some of the uncertainty surrounding pit design as well as presenting engineers with an additional means to manage risk.

Occurrences and associations of natural tellurides are constrained by the relative fugacities of Te, in specific mineralizing environments. Some are rare (e.g., FeTe2) and others absent (e.g. MoTe , ZnTe) m nature because high f-Te2/f-S2 ratios are rare or unattainable , whereas others (e. g . , Ag2Te,HgTe) require lower ratios and are common. Complex and seemingly chaotic sulfide-telluride associations are, in fact, highly systematic and depend both on temperature and fugacity ratios. Some older sulfides act as buffers via reactions such as PbS + Te2 = PbTe + S2, thereby affecting the deposition and paragenesis of younger tellurides and the combined or uncombined mode of occurrence of precious metals. Thermochemical calculations of telluride-sulfide-oxide equilibria can have pragmatic value. The thermochemical approach tells us little about the Te "source", but is beginning to unravel the systematics of telluride mineralogy and controls at the precipitational end of the line.

The detonation of explosive charges releases large quantities of energy that can produce rock and soil deformations far from the detonation point Extensive data are available on blasting in general and on the performance of certain structures subjected to blast vibrations. However, only limited information is available on the performance of earthfill dams and other hydraulic structures subjected to blasting. The limited data indicate that, whatever the cause, one or several cycles of repeated strains in earthfill dams may cause residual porewater pressure increases. Limiting the peak particle velocity to less than 2.5 cm/s for operating dams constructed of or having foundations consisting of saturated, loose sands or silts and to less than 5 cm/s for other earthfill dams, should keep strains below the threshold strains required for residual porewater pressure increases to occur. Porewater pressures should be monitored throughout a blasting operation, and they should be allowed to dissipate, if necessary, before subsequent charges are detonated.

A simple shape description scheme has been developed which has the specific aim of distinguishing between angular and more rounded particles. The procedure involves fitting a general polygon (usually about 20 sided) to the particle profile. Geometric shape descriptors have been defined based on variations in the angles between adjacent sides and their radial displacement from the particle centroid. A two-parameter shape description, incorporating an angular variabli1ity and an elongation index, has been shown to be clearly consistent with visual observations. A single-parameter angularity index has been shown to be very sensitive to small differences in particle roundness and seems to provide a better description of angularity than other approaches such as signature and fractal analyses. The scheme has been applied to three sets of fine quartz particles produced by different grinding procedures. The results indicate that the technique is capable of distinguishing between angular and re1atively rounded particles and can quantify their specific shape features.

A major factor in the economic development of New South Wales has been the ready availability of coal for the major industrial and urban centres of Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong. Historically, the presence of high quality coal near these areas has acted as a catalyst to urban and industrial growth. This easy access to low cost coal resources over the past 200 years has given rise to a commonly held belief that New South Wales contains vast coal resources sufficient to meet any foreseeable demand. However, a recent study undertaken by the Coal Resources Development Committee has found that New South Wales is likely to face a serious shortage of economically mineable coal in the future. Forecasts predict that demand for New South Wales coal will increase by about 40 per cent, and then remain at about that level for at least a further ten years. To meet such demands, the coal industry will require access to economic high quality coal resources.

This report presents the results of an investigation by Federal Bureau of Mines engineers of water-injection projects in the northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York area, where oil-producing wells have been converted from pumping to flowing. Data from 24 leases converted to flowing were collected and examined. Only 10 leases had information of significant scope for inclusion in the final analysis. The projects were classified in one of two categories. Group I consisted of leases operated to permit an evaluation of operational changes in terms of existing pressure differentials between injection and producing wells. Group II included remaining properties, for which enough information was available to justify an economic analysis but which did not have sufficient production data to support an engineering study because of radical changes in operational techniques. Variations in production and costs resulting from conversion to flowing were examined for production methods, well-spacing and completion techniques, and reservoir characteristics. Where water-injection rates were constant, oil production usually decreased rapidly at the time of conversion; production then increased slightly for 6 to 8 months before resuming a normal decline rate considerably below the estimated pumping rate. The abrupt decrease in production after conversion is indicative of lower pressure differentials between injection and producing wells, caused by the increased hydrostatic head in the producing wells.

Declining US ore grades along with skyrocketing energy, materials, labor, and regulatory costs underscored the urgency for technological innovation in the mineral processing area. Re¬liance on the scale-up and automation of unit operations was the sector's primary battle plan. Debate continues on the upper size limit of concentrating plants and whether process controls should be centralized or distributed in the mill. In the materials handling area, the economics of large-scale and mobile systems, particularly conveyors, were well documented in the literature. Comminution, the most costly and energy consuming area of the processing flowsheet, saw improvements in process controls and liner designs. The trend toward larger grinding units stalled somewhat during the year owing to some operational problems at commercial plants. Research and development of apparently less expensive physical separation processes-that also boast recovery of cleaner and more environmentally acceptable products -gained momentum during the year. Because of escalating capital cost requirements for new plant capacity, the year saw a greater interest by mill designers to re-examine existing capacity. The focus here is clearly to modify or retrofit unit operations with more efficient components as an alternative to installing more costly new equipment. Proper selection of the spacing distance between blastholes is fundamental to successful blasting. Its value directly affects the profitability of an operation. It also exercises control over adverse effects such as airblast, flyrock, generation of ground vibrations, and overbreak. One of the more significant factors influencing the spacing's specific value is the initiation firing time intervals used between blastholes. Examples are described to illustrate some of the problems that result when spacing and timing are not compatible.

The concepts of conditional probabi1ity and geometrical probability are used to establish a relation between the probability density of the trace length and the probability density of the discontinuity diameter. The discontinuity is represented as a thin circular disc. A numerical solution scheme is used to obtain the probability density of the disc diameter from the probability density of the trace length. An example was used to illustrate the possibly large difference between the mean discontinuity diameter and the mean trace length.

This study compares the costs of transporting coarse coal by pipeline versus more conventional belt conveyors. Hydraulic conveying of crushed (not pulverized) coal has not had widespread commercial acceptance. However, there is little doubt that the technology is available, so that, should this method be proven economical for a given application, implementation will become more acceptable.
