The study and use of low-carbon manganese steels have been curiously neglected in the general history of developments in alloy steels. Hadfield1 made an extensive study of manganese-iron-carbon alloys about 1886, which culminated in the wide application and use of Hadfield austenitic manganese steel. His alloys were nearly all high in carbon, as compared with the steels discussed in this paper, and he found a marked tendency toward brittleness in the alloys of medium and low manganese content, that is, below 7 per cent. manganese. As a result, there has been a widespread prejudice against the use of manganese steels containing between 1.0 to 3.5 per cent. manganese with comparatively low carbon. Steels of this composition have never been studied adequately in comparison with other alloy steels, and have had litttle use in practice. In a very recent paper by Sir Robert Hadfield2 the following statement appears: 6L... manganese-iron alloys with little or no carbon do not seem to offer any practical employment; they only become valuable in the presence of quite high percentages of carbon, 0.90 to 1.50 percent." The results of the present investigation are so contrary to the findings of Hadfield that the writers feel fully justified in presenting the preliminary report incorporated in this paper. A range of explosives has been specifically developed for soft ground blasting. These explosives can be used in both wet and dry blasting conditions, range in density from 0.3 - 1.2 g/cc and range in VoD from 2 - 4.5 km/s. This range of explosives has the potential to be tailored to ground type and is predicted to be suitable for a variety of applications which include: blasting in soft to medium overburden, coal blasting, wall control, and low vibration blasting. Trials have been conducted in several applications with encouraging results. Several cast/throw blasts have been conducted with these products partially replacing either ANFO or Heavy ANFO. The results from the blast have been equivalent in cast (per cent) and at reduced cost per unit volume. These products have also been used in presplit blasting and have again achieved equivalent or better results when compared to conventional presplit blasting at a lower cost per unit volume. This product has also been used in a vibration sensitive area replacing traditional explosive products, and generating excellent fragmentation and digging whilst maintaining vibration limits. This new range of products, NOVALITE, has shown great potential in many applications either reducing cost per unit volume, improving wall quality or improving productivity in environmentally sensitive areas.

The work to be described was part of an exploratory research program directed toward identifying potentially useful but little known reactions in extractive metallurgy. In particular, the major copper sulfide minerals, as a group, have long been considered insoluble in nonoxidizing acids (e.g. Forward and Barren, 1J60; Parsons and Ingraham, 1970; Peters et al. 1972). This generalization was considered to include nonoxidizing conditions in warm aqueous MC1 solutions (Ingraham et al. 1972) and, indeed, was consistent with our own chemical and mineralogical experience. On the other hand, under hydrothermal conditions, copper and sulfide species are carried in solution and deposited as sulfides in mineralized veins. The question that poses itself is: what are the mildest conditions of temperature and fluid composition under which commercially important copper sulfide minerals can be solubilized in the absence of an oxidizing agent? A reference to H2S formation during oxygen-sulfuric acid pressure leaching (Warren, 1958) of chalcopyrite, when the oxygen partial pressure was allowed to fall, provided a clue. In the present study, experimentation with chalcopyrite concentrate in dilute hydrochloric acid, under re flux conditions (in Pyrex flasks) and with an inert purge gas, revealed substantial amounts of H2S production and iron solubilization, cite negligible copper solubilization, after 2 ½ -4 days. Under comparable conditions the extent of reaction with dilute sulfuric, acetic and phosphoric acids was markedly less.

The Proterozoic poly-metallic Trilogy deposit was discovered in 1997, and until recently, mining evaluation was stalled due to poor metallurgical performance. Unlocking the substantial economic value of the deposit required a coming together of geologists, mineralogists, metallurgists and mining engineers, who by working collaboratively, uncovered the detail necessary to allow the required metallurgical breakthroughs to occur. The deposit itself is described as a sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX), with an enriched lead-zinc-silver core surrounded by a broader envelope of copper-gold mineralisation. The geological domains were defined in broad terms based on the style of mineralisation, assay values and lithology. These domains, while adequate for the resource estimation process, failed to translate into representative metallurgical domains. Additional work with new techniques defined regions in the deposit with altered processing properties which could not be recognised by conventional geological logging. Such additional complexities could not be appreciated at the outset of the metallurgical test work program.These regions were defined by applying the EDTA analysis method for recognition of where the valuable sulfides, particularly galena, had been partially modified by oxidising conditions. Hence, the flotation response of the valuable sulfide minerals was diminished and the increased amount of heavy metal cations available in the system significantly reduced selectivity in the flotation process.Understanding the detail of this complexity was essential in determining representative metallurgical domains, which was the first step in the long road of development.

New York Meeting, October 16 and 17, 1913.-The One Hundred and Sixth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of professional papers will be held in New York City, on Thursday and Friday, October 16 and 17, 1913. Headquarters will be at the Institute office in the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West 39th Street. The sessions will be held in one of the assembly rooms of the building. Because of the many valuable papers on iron and steel obtained with the assistance of the Iron and Steel Committee, which papers could not appropriately be presented and discussed at the Montana meeting, this October meeting of the Institute is held for the purpose of reading and discussing these papers, most of which will be printed and distributed in advance. The members of the following societies have been invited to attend the meeting, and several have accepted and declared their intention of taking part in the proceedings: American Society for Testing Materials, American Iron and Steel Institute, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Foundrymen's Association. The meeting will be conducted under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee, and the latest revised program of the proceedings will be found on page xi, under the notes of this Committee.

Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in Brooklyn, NY is the largest of 14 Water Pollution Control Plants in New York City. It services over 1 million people with a current processing capacity of 310 million gallons daily. Upgrades to the plant have been underway since 1998. This paper details the foundation elements installed in three separate contracts during 2009: NC-41F, NC-36G, and NC-47G. The elements are Concrete-Filled Pipe Piles, H-Piles, Steel Sheet Piling, Secant Walls, Drilled Caissons, and High Capacity Micropiles. Soils on the site consist of fill over organic silty clay and silty sand. Beneath the organic layers lie lake sand and varved silt and clay, sitting atop glacial till and rock. Due to Federal Mandates, certain plant capacity and secondary treatment requirements had to be met by specific dates. Failure to meet the requirements would have an adverse affect on the NYC areas being serviced. Further complicating the project, the existing plant operations had to be maintained throughout the entire construction phase. To accommodate the constraints of the project, new specialty equipment and several key redesigns were used to maintain construction schedules

Exploration for economic nickel sulphide mineralisation has often been directed by rationalisations based on poorly understood genetic models. Among those that have enjoyed popularity over the past decade are the "layered gabbro" model and the "basal ultramafic" or Kambalda model. The new discoveries in the Mt Keith-Agnew area could well become a model for future nickel search. Exploration based on even the crudest state- ment of the Kambalda model - prospect the basal contact of Archaean ultramafic complexes for gossanous expressions of sulphide mineralisa- tion - has met with remarkable success. Refine- ments to this model, besides satisfying the geology of any particular deposit, have the major virtue that many of the genetic options - magmatic segregation, hydrothermal transport, sulphurisation, replacement sedimentary, structural control, etc. - are still open. Recent descriptions of highly magnesian silicate melts associated with the ultramafic rocks, do however, place some constraints on the formation of these deposits. Further evidence, from experimental studies on sulphide-silicate and sulphide-oxide phase relationships, and nickel-iron exchange in pyrrhotite, is taken with descriptions of sulphide nickel occurrences in Western Australia to examine genetic models for existing ore bodies.

The week of Sept. 22, will be a week of convocation of societies in Chicago with the exposition of Chemical industries. The American. Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will occupy the stage for most of the week, American Ceramic Society meets on Wednesday, the American Electrochemical Society on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry from Wednesday to Saturday. There will also be a symposium upon Safety in the Plant and Mine under the chairmanship of M. L. Leopold, Safety Engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and in the evening after this sleeting-which will occupy an entire afternoon-there will be shown a series of motion pictures of safety work in plant, field-and mine. The motion picture program will consist almost entirely of films now being made. Even in motion pictures, the Exposition is outstanding as the place of introduction to the public of the newest and most recent developments. Each improvement of the projectoscope in motion-picture projection has been reserved for first public demonstration at the Exposition. Mention cannot be made of the new exhibits that are engaged for the Exposition, other than to say that the electric furnace will be in operation. These will give, probably for the first time, men of science an opportunity to see and compare the various designs and judge them for the various work to which they are applicable.

The process of design, measurement and review is essential if blasting is to continuously improve to meet the increasing productivity goals of most mining operations. To achieve continual improvements, many operators are turning to contractors to provide the necessary technology. Under this arrangement, the contractor becomes the supplier of a service rather than products and assumes some of the risks associated with blasting by guaranteeing the end result. If contractors are to obtain significant productivity improvements they must continuously improve every aspect of their business.

This paper identifies the components of belt conveyor shifting force as a vertical force, Pv, a lateral force, Ph, and a longitudinal force, Pl. A method for estimating these forces is proposed that relates each of their values to the properties of the conveyor structure and rails, the shifting operation parameters, and other site-specific conditions. The effect of this force on the shifter behavior is analyzed, and guidelines are developed for selecting a suitable shifter. As well, other equipment requirements for the shifting operation are discussed.

SUMMARY. The supports account for over 501 of the total expenditure for a longwall face. The success and economics of a face depend upon the optimum selection of type and density of the supports. Empirical solutions involving uncertain safety factor are replaced by a geo-mining approach developed at OMRS in which the support resistance is defined by the stability index of the roof rock mass and the failure pattern of the immediate roof. The paper gives the methodology adopted to define the support resistance for Alkusha colliery longwall face of Jharia coalfield (India). The stability index of the roof mass varied from 218 to 520 for the individual beds and 1100 to 1374 for the immediate roof mass. The exact support resistance for the condition was found to be 42 t/m2.

Soluble salts can be removed from Bowmans lignite by water and acid leaching. The success of the removal of water soluble or acid exchangeable impurities is directly associated with the efficiency of dewatering these slurries. The filtration characteristics of a slurry at its natural pH (4.0) were poor, with a filter cake moisture of 65%. Acid treatment of the slurry at pH2 caused the filter cake moisture content to drop to 61 %. Various oils, oily surfactants and a flocculant were tested to determine the conditions for minimum filter cake moisture. A series of pilot scale filtration tests were conducted on flocculant dosed slurries with and without washing on a horizontal test unit. Moisture contents of 54% were obtained in laboratory testing using high additions of oily surfactant. For the pilot scale test work, moisture levels close to 60% were obtained with low flocculant additions, similar to results obtained in laboratory studies. Removal of soluble salts could be correlated directly to the final moisture content of the filter cake. This process of leaching followed by filtration resulted in the removal of approximately 75% (more than 80% with washing on the cloth) of the sodium chloride originally present in the lignite.

Large excavations, such as Iongwall panels, result in extensive vertical stress redistribution in the surrounding strata. The large abutment stresses developed may produce damage to pre-existing or planned excavations in the same seam or in seams above and below the workings. Knowledge of the magnitude and location of these stresses is therefore important in the design of mine openings; pillar sizes for panel and pillar layouts, roof supports in longwall gateroads and workings over or above pre-existing or planned extraction in adjacent seams. In an attempt to reduce costs, the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC), a Federal Crown Corporation responsible for operating two retreat longwall coal mines, examined the potential for either interpanel barrier pillar width reduction or entire pillar elimination by the adoption of dual life gateroads for the longwall panels. In order to assess the potential for reduced interpanel barrier widths or total elimination, an investigation of the redistribution of vertical stresses around longwall panels in the Sydney Coalfield was established. The study was conducted jointly by the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL), of CANMET (a division of Natural Resources Canada) and the Denver Research Center (DRC) of the United States Bureau of Mines. The program included monitoring of vertical stress changes around longwall panels and gateroad behaviour in two seams. USBM-style hydraulic borehole pressure cells connected to chart recorders for continuous monitoring were deployed at four sites, two at Lingan Colliery and two at Phalen Colliery. This report describes the investigations conducted at Phalen Colliery. Contoured plots of stress redistribution around two sites are presented.

Over the past several years, Svedala has developed a continuous charge monitor (CCM) for tumbling mills. It consists of a strain gauge embedded into a rubber lifter and associated electronics. This paper describes the results of a research program to evaluate the technical and economical merits of such a device on a SAG mill. The evaluation includes validation through discrete element modelling and comparison to measured static volumetric load. Inclusion of the measurement into a control strategy and its potential for condition monitoring is discussed.

Sec. 1. This Division shall be known as the Institute of Metals Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Sec. 2. I. M. E. in so far as nonferrous metallurgy is concerned, within the rights given in A. I. M. E. By-law XI., Sec. 1, and not inconsistent with the Constitution and By-laws of the A. I. M. E. in good standing may become a Member, Associate or Junior Associate of this Division upon registering in writing a desire so to do, but without additional dues. Sec. 2. On the 27th day of March last, the day on which the Florida sessions of the last meeting of the Institute began in Ocala, occurred the death of one of its most distinguished honorary members, Bergrath Franz Posepny, of Vienna, formerly professor of the science of ore-deposits in the mining school at Przibram, Bohemia. Prof. Posepny had greatly increased his fame among American mining engineers, besides laying the Institute under special obligations of gratitude, by the elaborate, brilliant and suggestive treatise on " The Genesis of OreDeposits," which he contributed to the International meeting, held at Chicago, in 1893. This essay, constituting the first complete publication of the substance of his course of lectures at Przibram, enriched and perfected by the matured results of his investigation and reflection down to the date of its cornpletion, was a free gift of almost unprecedentecl value to the society which had distinguished him by honorary membership. In estimating the generosity of the author, it must be borne in mind that the copyright of such a work, the fruit of years of study and of practice as an instructor, is of no little value to a European professor, and constitutes one of the legitimate rewards of his (otherwise not highly-paid) labor. This paper describes technical work done to develop a Spouted Bed Electrode Cell into a commercially viable Electrowinning Cell; (a previous paper has been presented at the ECS meeting in Paris in May of this year, with a more general overview of the cell, [1]). The studies have included hydrodynamic tests to understand the criteria for the circulating flow of metallic beads in the cell, particularly in the region at the entrance to the draft tube, and electrochemical tests to find a suitable diaphragm for extended time electrolysis. Various patent pending features were developed including a double nozzle to allow for automatic stopping and restarting of the bed, an arrowhead shaped draft tube to control the flow of beads into the entrance to the draft tube, a roof-top shaped device to control the flow of beads out of the top of the draft tube, an overflow weir to allow the continuous recovery of beads from the cell, and a family of diaphragm fabrics for extended operation. Prior to the identification of the diaphragm material, short circuits would develop within a few hours. A pilot scale cell was operated for three days, with continuous operator attention, and then for ten days with operator attention only on day shift. The cell is currently advancing to the next stage of development which will involve continuous testing in a commercial copper electrowinning facility.

Experiments were done to determine if a mushroom compost-based sulfate reduction system could be used to treat nickel-contaminated mine waters. Sulfate reduction systems were established in columns containing acid-washed mushroom compost. Simulated mine waters containing 2000 mg/L sulfate and 50 to 1000 mg/L nickel were adjusted to pH 4.5 and pumped through the columns at flow rates between 15 and 25 mL/hr. During the first nine days of operation, virtually all influent nickel was removed in the columns by sorption and ion exchange mechanisms. The nickel removal rate then dropped to 18 to 30 mg Ni/day (7.8 to 12.8 nmol/ g-substrate/day), probably due to low sulfate reduction rates. When sodium lactate was added to the inflow, a sustained and seven-fold increase in the nickel removal rate was observed. Bacterial sulfate reduction rates measured in mushroom compost-based wetlands exposed to coal mine drainage are 2 to 20 times faster than the rates observed in this study. Low sulfate reduction rates in the columns may have been due to the inhibition of microbial activity by high nickel concentrations and the removal of labile organic compounds from the mushroom compost substrate during acid-washing. Results of this study indicate that bacterial sulfate reduction can effectively treat nickel concentrations up to 500 mg/L if labile carbon is nonlimiting.

THE hot-milling process for reconditioning rock-drill bits is not new. It has been employed by a few mines for years and in the past decade it has been widely adopted, as its advantages have become better known. Because of the extensive commercial development in England and Canada of machines to operate on this principle, general acceptance has been largely in the British possessions and until recently has been chiefly in the field of conventional steel. In the past two years there has been a definite trend toward hot-milling of detachable bits in Canada, t but only in the past year has any considerable attempt been made to build special machines for this type of work. Generally a machine designed for con-ventional steel has been used and special holders employed to manipulate the bit. As early as 1934 at least one operator in the United States had adapted hot-milling to conventional steel with a substantial saving in resharpening costs. Several other operators have taken it up but there has been no widespread adoption of the method in this country by users of conventional steel. This may be partly explained by the fact that until recently no American manufacturer produced this equipment and operators have been obliged to build their own hot-millers or import them. Several years ago a few machines were built in Seattle, Wash-ington, and operated in some mines in the northwest, but, for reasons not generally known, the effort was abandoned.
