Geologic constraints on mining and recoverability include the following: coal seams too thin or thick for conventional mining methods; coal seams with insufficient stratigraphic separation; unstable roof or floor strata; discontinuous or lenticular seams; coal seams that have high dips or are intensely faulted; water problems due to proximity of aquifers; and coal quality problems such as excessive sulfur, ash, chlorine, sodium, etc. The demonstrated reserve base for western coal of 220 billion tons is considered misleading as it does not adequately incorporate the above parameters in estimating procedures. Current reserve base estimating procedures involve an abstraction of data from generalized resource estimates. The authors believe the reserve base should be determined independently beginning with well-known deposits, with all mining and recoverability constraints fully incorporated.

The stainless steel sheets of permanent cathodes at Norddeutsche Affinerie (NA) were damaged by corrosion after nearly 11 years in operation. The necessary raising of the strength for stripping the copper had increased the deformation of the stainless steel blades. Current efficiency declined. After investigating the possibilities, like buying new cathodes or treating the steel surface, i.e. by sliding, a repair process was developed whereby the stainless steel sheet was exchanged. Special laser technology for cutting used blades und welding new stainless steel sheets underneath the used hanger bar was applied because the energy input into steel is the lowest of all welding methods. The new stainless steel sheet was welded with the rolling line in a horizontal direction. The achieved flatness of the repaired cathode blades amounted to less than 4mm per meter. During 11 months NA repaired nearly 36,000 permanent cathodes and put them back into operation. Repair costs were much lower than the costs of buying new ones and current efficiency increased again to more than 96% with a current density of 340 A/m².

A key component of the Inland Feeder Project is the Riverside Badlands Tunnel, a7.9-mile stretch subjected to high internal and external hydraulic pressures passing beneath highly eroded hills in a semi rural environment. The tunnel presented significant design and management challenges to the project team. This paper describes the formula for project success used to manage the design of this complex pressure tunnel, from team member selection to the completion of all contract documents, on schedule and below budget. The project team dealt with sensitive regional and local community issues and won the trust of the community. The team included participation by senior management and recognized experts from inception to finish. The team worked diligently to build quality into design and adopted a claims avoidance approach to management and preparation of documents.

Continuous mining has revolutionized the coal industry but intensified the problems of earlier mechanization. From the installation of the first miner, it was recognized that face ventilation would be one of these problems. To establish an efficient work cycle for the equipment being used, conventional mechanized mining provides four or more development faces. Continuous mining, relying on a single machine, requires only one face, although more than one can be driven alternately by the same machine. In gaseous areas mined by the older methods, the intermittent rate of exposure allows time for the face to bleed off or be cleared, and the width obtained with conventional units makes it possible to hang a brattice line almost to the face. Continuous mining increases the ventilation hazards; there is no margin of time, and very limited space.

The Mineral Creek Diversion Project is at the Asarco Ray Mine Complex, about128 km (80 miles) east of Phoenix, Arizona. The new tunnel will intercept the waters of Mineral Creek about 2,134 m (7,000 ft) upstream from an existing tunnel. The 5.74 m(18.83 ft) hard rock TBM will break into the old tunnel about 2,162 m (7,090 ft) in from the old portal after mining 3,888 m (12,753 ft). The TBM will mine through a series of igneous and metamorphic formations including volcanic tuff, soft volcanic ash, massive diabase, fractured quartzite, and schist. The TBM will hole through into the existing 4.88 m (16 ft) dia. horseshoe tunnel where the TBM will be disassembled and removed from the tunnel.

Characterising ores in-pit and in real-time presents a significant value opportunity for the mining industry. Hyperspectral imaging systems are proposed as an enabling technology to achieve this real-time characterisation. This paper considers the application of a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer mounted on a shovel. We define the performance requirements for such a spectrometer and associated subsystems during a typical dig-load cycle. The relatively high swing rotation speed of the shovel requires approximately video-rate exposure times to achieve good spatial resolution. We analyse a selection of components against these requirements and find that suitable commercial spectrometers, detectors and optics appear fit-for-purpose. Automated, real-time spectral classification systems are also available, with only relatively modest requirements for processing power. The paper argues that at near peak solar illumination, a system for field deployment at the required sensitivity is viable using only commercial off-the-shelf components.CITATION:Job, A T, Edgar, M L and McAree, P R, 2017. SEC. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise seven classes, namely: 1. Members; 2. Honorary Members; 3. Senior Members; 4. Associates; 5. Junior Members; 6. Rocky Mountain Members; 7. Junior Foreign Affiliates. All shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, excepting that no member of any class whose residence shall be outside of the United States of America, except those residing in Mexico and Canada, shall be entitled to vote. SEC. 2. Members: A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the. class of Member must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. This shall not apply to Rocky Mountain members. SEC. 3. Honorary Members: Each candidate for Honorary Membership must be recommended by at least ten Members and must be elected by ballot at a meeting of the Board of Directors by the unanimous vote of the Directors present; provided, however, that the number of Honorary Members shall at no time exceed twenty. Such election shall automatically act as a transfer of such member from any other class of membership to which he may belong. SEC. 4. Senior Members: The Directors may, at the special request of any Member or Associate who has reached the age of seventy years and who has paid dues for thirty years, transfer such Member or Associate to the class of Senior Member; and in special cases may waive either the requirement as to age or as to the number of years for which dues have been paid. SEC. 5. Junior Members: A person to be eligible for election to the class of Junior Member must be qualified -through education or experience to hold a subordinate position in engineering, mining, metallurgical, geological or chemical work. Rocky Mountain Members: Membership in a special class of life memberships without annual or other dues and without right to receive the printed literature distributed to other members or the right and privilege of wearing the official badge of technical members, is given to all members of the Rocky Mountain Club at the time of consolidation. This paper has been written to summarize the laboratory and field studies leading to injection of Pacific Ocean water into the Third Grubb formation. Laboratory tests for studying the permeabilities of cores to Pacific Ocean water are described. Resu1ts of these tests showed that the water could be successfully injected if it is chertzically stable, sterile, and properly filtered. Clay swelling was shown to be a comparatively minor factor in permeability reduction. Studies leading to development of an economical system for properly conditioning the ocean water are discussed. It was necessary to control pH, calcium carbonate deposition, bacterial growth, iron solubility. oxygen, and suspended .solids. A relatively simple system combining the use of sulifur dioxide, a quaternary rlmmonium chloride, and filtration was shown to adeqrrately control all these factors. This combination has not previozrsly been used as a water treating technique. Evaluation tests of the water conditioning system prior to injection are described, and results of such tests are presented. Control measures needed to insure a continusously adequate water treatment are reviewed. INTRODUCTION The utilization of sea water for waterflooding has only recently been attempted. Knowledge of treating requirements has been limited, and in most cases no water treating has been done. Prior to the initiation of the Third Grubb zone pilot water flood at Ventura, Calif.,1,2 extensive laboratory research was done in an effort to define the treatment necessary to provide a suitable injection fluid. Close coordination and cooperation between field and research personnel were found to be the foremost requisites in developing the most economical and practical method for treating ocean water. LABORATORY STUDIES Plugging Tendencies of Untreated Ocean Water A program of laboratory studies was initiated for the purpose of evaluating whether ocean water could be injected into the formation for prolonged periods of time without causing plugging of the pore spaces of the formation. Because of the fairly low permeability of the formation (averaging about 40 md), it was realized from the outset that a water of exceptionally high quality was needed. Ocean water used in the laboratory studies was carefully filtered through ultrafine fritted glass filters, having nominal maximum pore sizes of 1.4 microns. Permeability tests were then performed on representative core material from the formation. It soon became apparent in these tests that filtration alone was not a sufficient treatment for the ocean water. Prolonged injection of the filtered water caused rapid plugging of the core samples. The permeability decline of a typical sample is illustrated by Curve A in Fig. 1. The several factors which can contribute to this plugging tendency are briefly reviewed below: Interaction with Formation Clays An evaluation of clay swelling effects on liquid permeability was made using core samples from the Grubb formation. An oil was chosen for determining the reference liquid permeability because it would not tend to react with any clays that might be present in the formation. The samples were then extracted, dried, and resat-urated with either treated ocean water, formation water, or fresh water. Permeabilities to the various waters were then determined. Porphyry-type deposits are characterized by mineralization in, as well as adjacent to, an igneous body, usually a porphyritic stock. One deposit style includes both mineral dissemination and mineralized veinlets, and both porphyry copper and porphyry molybdenum deposits are characterized by dissemination and veinlet control of ore minerals. Those gold deposits that occur in stocks, with gold occur- ring in veinlets and disseminations within the stock, clearly are can- didates for consideration as porphyry gold type. Porphyry copper and porphyry molybdenum deposits are also characterized by potassic, phyllic, argillic, orpropyllitic alteration or some combination of these alteration types. Where two or more alteration zones are present, these are arranged in a sequential outcrop pattern. Gold occurring in dissemination and in veinlets in as well as adjacent to stocks, and which also occur in typical pervasive porphyry alteration suits, constitute a clearly defined class of deposit that fits the definition of a porphyry gold type. Porphyry copper deposits may carry appreciable gold. Porphyry copper-gold deposits are known from all porphyry copper provinces. This chapter is intended to cover porphyry gold occurrences that may have little or no copper or molybdenum as economic concentrations.

This paper presents the results of a column flotation study on a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design was used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to produce a high-grade concentrate with a high recovery. A 15ppm concentration of nonionic frother was found sufficient to maximize the recovery at pH of 9.5.

"The electrical section of the Bureau of Mines has obtained copies of all available State safety rules and regulations in order to make a study of those portions of the codes relating to electrical equipment. While it has been found almost impossible to compare the several codes as a whole, comparison of those regulations dealing with a single subject has proved both interesting and instructive.Sixteen states have rules or enactments having reference to telephones and the present paper covers a compilation of these references. Financial risk of environmental problems is the key to many important business decisions within the mining industry. Massive uncertainty makes it difficult to choose a strategy for managing environmental problems to reduce corporate financial exposure to environmental impairment. A correct and practical method exists to clarify the risks and help make decisions. A case study on an insurance problem illustrates the method.The approach used is to translate existing data on environmental problems into probabilistic expressions of financial risk, and organise the expressions to reveal alternative solution strategies for the insurance problem.

Talc, when it can be isolated as a pure mineral, has a composition of 63.36% SiO2, 31.89% MgO, and 4.75% H2O. However, as an industrial commodity, talc rarely approaches theoretical purity. Nevertheless, the impure talc products of commerce find a multitude of uses and few substitutes in many industrial applications. Minerals commonly associated with and sold together in talcose mixtures are tremolite, chlorite, dolomite, mica, and magnesite. Steatite was originally a mineralogical name applied to pure talc. In today's commerce steatite generally refers to the massive variety of talc suitable for electrical insulator manufacture. Block steatite ore can be machined into various shapes. Impure varieties of massive or block talc are still commonly referred to as soapstone. Soft massive talc, suitable for crayon manufacture, has been referred to as French chalk. It has been common practice to discuss talc, soapstone, and pyrophyllite under the same general heading. In the case of soapstone and talc, this is a natural thing since many different types of platy, soft minerals exhibiting a high degree of lubricity (commonly referred to as "slip") have been grouped together and called soapstone or talc. Further, there is a mineralogical relationship of pyrophyllite to montmorillonite and talc to hectorite. Thus, talc and pyrophyllite are sometimes referred to as clay minerals. When finely divided talc or pyrophyllite are combined with water in proportions to make a slurry, the end product does have the appearance of a clay-water mixture. Soapstone for utensils and ornaments was mined by prehistoric Indians on Santa Catalina Island, Calif. In the mid-1800s, soapstone from deposits along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains was used by white settlers for building and ornamental stone and in the linings and foundations of furnaces (Anon. 1956). Previous to 1916, the annual recorded production in California did not exceed 2000 tons. In the period 1912 to 1918, output rose sharply when the Talc City, Western, and Silver Lake mines were put into operation. From 1916 to 1935, the state's annual output of talc was in the range of 9,000 to 20,000 tons. In the mid-1930s, the use of talc in wall tile grew rapidly. In California, the production of talc grew to 63,000 tpy in 1943. The post-war building boom helped California production to grow to 120,000 tons in 1951. In 1968, production was 165,000 tons, 1969 was 145,000 tons, 1970 was 185,000 tons, and 1972 was 155,000 tons. Talc mining in New York state dates to about 1878 when a Colonel Palmer and associates opened the first commercial talc mine on the Nelson Freeman farm near Talcville, New York. In 1893, this operation was sold to the International Pulp Co. which changed its name to the International Talc Co. in 1944. Total production from seven New York mines, in 1948, was 130,000 tons. A new talc operation, the Gouverneur Talc Co. owned by the R.T. Vanderbilt Co., began operations near Balmat, N.Y., in 1948. The initial capacity of the processing plant was 200 tpd (Gillingham, 1950). Subsequent expansions have increased capacity to over 600 tpd. The Vermont talc industry began just after the start of the 20th century. Talc was discovered in the area of the present Johnson, Vt., talc mine in 1902. The American Min¬erals Co. initiated plant operations at Johnson in 1904. The Magnesia Talc Co. opened a plant at Waterbury, Vt., in 1913 (Burmeister, 1963; Trauffer, 1964) and acquired American Minerals Co. in 1923. The Waterbury mine has a long history as a producer of talc crayons. The Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. was formed in 1924 by a merger of the Eastern Talc Co.

A revolutionary development in blasting materials has occurred in the past 5 years. Ammonium nitrate, sensitized by the addition of a few percent of No. (class) 2 diesel fuel or other suitable petroleum product, has been adopted as a low-cost, efficient blasting agent2/ by a wide variety of mining and heavy construction operations. Moreover, ready availability of the component supplies throughout the Nation and ease of their formulation into effective blasting agents have made it possible for the blaster himself to pre-pare the mixes at the site of use. Although these field-mixed products have partly or wholly displaced explosives such as dynamites in some applications, there are other blasting operations where the fuel-sensitized ammonium nitrate agents do not appear to be well adapted. Important safety characteristics are inherent in ammonium nitrate-based blasting agents prepared under competent factory control, or when field mixed under equivalent close control--as long as the hazards they present are clearly understood and respected. This publication attempts to summarize knowledge of those hazards and to incorporate practical ways to cope with them. A series of safety recommendations thus is presented. These recommendations cover the preparation, storage, transportation, and use of field-mixed ammonium nitrate blasting agents.

For resources projects with healthy net present value (NPV) and low cash flow volatility, conventional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis will continue to provide the dominant investment decision-making criteria. However, DCF analysis can be biased because it often applies a single risk-adjusted discount rate (RADR) to compare the value of projects with different risk characteristics. Many of the difficulties with DCF modelling arise from analystsÆ inability to determine appropriate risk discounts and to estimate expected spot prices inputs for the commodities produced over the life of the project. Modern asset pricing (MAP) is a very valuable complement to DCF analysis in addressing some of these issues. Most papers dealing with MAP, however, while academically rigorous, tend not to be explicit in terms of practical application of this methodology in routine project evaluation. This paper has the objective of reviewing the MAP methodology and of demystifying its complexity, by providing a simple but realistic step-by-step evaluation of a mining project, comparing its DCF and MAP NPV values. The paper concludes that MAP provides a minimum, risk-adjusted æfloorÆ value, thus representing a valuable complement to any DCF valuation.

The rapid growth of highwall mining in the Appalachian coalfields has resulted in unique safety concerns. Due to the concentration of activity at the base of the highwall and the potentially destabilizing influence of the mining process, proper mine planning and continual monitoring of the ground conditions is essential to ensure a safe and productive operation. This will also help to minimize the need to recover equipment that has become entrapped underground, and the subsequent hazards associated with a recovery operation. Adequate geotechnical site investigation and rational design methods should enable mine planners to properly account for the site-specific conditions that influence web and abutment pillar, roof, floor, and highwall stability. This paper examines the growth of highwall mining, provides a general overview of the various safety concerns, and reviews the modes of highwall failure as they relate to a highwall mining operation. Gcotechnical considerations that should be taken into account before and throughout the mining operation are emphasized. The importance of closely examining and monitoring highwall conditions for subtle signs of highwall instability will be discussed.

This paper provides information on various evaluation studies conducted to assess the CPT based interpretation methods. Salient findings from these evaluations are summarized. Additionally, a comprehensive evaluation study on both LCPC and European methods was performed on twenty-four driven piles selected from four different states. This evaluation showed that the LCPC method predictions are close to measured pile capacities. The European method provided good predictions for driven steel piles. Overall, both methods' predictions show high values of coefficients of variations, which are in agreement with other studies. Overestimation of driven concrete pile capacities is attributed to large estimations of unit point resistance. Suggestions to consider appropriate CPT based pile capacity interpretation methods are presented.

THE world production of copper for the first eight months of 1927 shows an increase of 3 per cent over the same period in 1926. Since February of this year, however, production has been considerably curtailed. The United States reduction in the last four months has been offset by the increased South Ameri-can and Belgian Congo production. The United States is now producing 58 per cent of the world production, Chile and Peru 17.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 5 per cent. In 1926 the United States produced 54 per cent, Chile and Peru 16.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 6.3 per cent. The complex interaction between multiple seam pillar extraction panels and variable topography can generate unexpected ground control problems. This case study describes stress-related damage in multiple seam workings that resulted in difficult operating conditions and compromised the safety of the support crews. The damage appeared to be caused by horizontal stress but the unexpected location of the damage baffled the authors. A 2D Finite element analysis was conducted of the mine layout and surface topography in an attempt to explain the observed failure. It was discovered that the topography resulted in the rotation of the major stress at the location of the current workings. The stress rotation caused asymmetrical interactions between the workings on the different coal beds, which can explain the unexpected response observed in the mine. Consequently the layout of the next panel was changed by locating the vulnerable entry 30 ft away from its originally planned position. The new location was selected to locate the entry in favorable stress conditions. The change in layout resulted in a significant improvement in conditions when the next panel was mined. At the time of writing this paper, a full panel has been developed using the modified layout without undue ground control problems. The case study demonstrates that numerical models can help engineers to interpret and solve complex multi-seam interaction problems.
