Characterization and analysis of multiphase particles and/or particulate systems (such as the packed particle bed) are of great technological importance for mineral processing applications. In general the performance of these applications depends on the statistical characteristics of particle microstructures, such as composition distribution, surface exposure of mineral grains, pore network structure, etc. For continued technological progress in the field of multiphase particulate processes, the need for quantitative spatial analysis of multiphase particles in three dimensions has increased sign6cantly. Such quantitative information must be accurate enough that the measured values can be used as parameters for simulation models, process design procedures, and control strategies. Modern 3D image-acquisition techniques, such as X-ray microtomography (XMT), offer a unique imaging capability that can produce high-resolution (a few micrometers) three-dimensional images of the internal structure of multiphase particulate samples. These three-dimensional image data present new challenges for image analysis, image processing, and visualization. Furthermore, important issues should focus on how to use the 3D information and derive new insights into the improvement, design, and operation of mineral processing processes. In this paper, utilization of XMT for characterization and analysis of leaching process involving multiphase particulate system is discussed.

Experimental measurements are reported for the oxygen pressures of iron-silicate slags in equilibrium with solid silica. CO2-CO mixtures were bubbled through the slags in silica crucibles to find equilibrium values of p co2/p co over the entire composition range of silica-saturated slags at 1250°, 1300°, and 1350°C. From the data, the activity vs. composition relationships were calculated for O, FeO, and Fe. SLAGS composed primarily of silica and iron oxides have particular practical importance in copper smelting,' in acid steelmaking, and in accounting for the service behavior of silica refractories. These slags all contain both ferrous and ferric iron, so that, strictly speaking, they are ternary or three-component liquid solutions. For convenience, the components may be taken as the three oxides, FeO, Fe2O3, and SiO2. The constitution of the FeO-Fe,O,-SiO, system at slagmaking temperatures has been studied in a recent investigation described in a separate paper.' This work showed the compositional ranges of iron-silicate melts at temperatures up to 1450°C and also the temperature-composition relationships for melts in equilibrium with various solid phases, including iron, wüstite, magnetite, and silica. Broadly speaking, the compositions of iron-silicate melts at a given temperature should be thought of as varying over a two-dimensional field. In the first place, the silica/total iron oxide relationship varies from maximum silica for silica-saturated melts to minimum silica for wüstite-saturated melts or, at higher temperatures, to zero silica for straight iron oxide melts. In copper smelting, for example, the converter slags approach the low silica limits while the reverberatory-furnace slags have intermediate silica contents, perhaps approaching silica saturation in some circumstances. Liquids formed in the pores of silica refractories presumably are close to silica saturation. The second type of composition variation is in the ferric/ferrous relationship, which depends on how oxidizing or how reducing the process conditions are. Relatively reducing slags, such as acid-steelmaking slags, are lower in ferric oxide and ap- proach saturation with metallic iron. Oxidized slags, such as copper-smelting slags, contain larger percentages of ferric oxides and approach or reach saturation with magnetite. Since these two kinds of compositional variations are closely related to two general properties of interest for all metallurgical slags, basicity, and oxidizing power, it is hoped that the thermodynamic study of iron-silicate slags eventually will throw further light on the significance and nature of these long-recognized but as yet poorly understood slag properties. Measurements of oxygen activity as a function of slag composition, using CO-CO2 gas mixture to fix oxygen activities, afford an experimentally convenient approach to the study of the thermodynamic properties of iron-silicate slags. In a preceding investigation,³ his approach was used in a systematic study of iron-silicate slags in equilibrium with solid iron. The present paper gives the results of a similar study of the iron-silicate slags in equilibrium with solid silica. The experimental work consisted in the determination of CO2: CO ratios in gas mixtures at equilibrium in the system: gas: liquid slag: silica Determinations were made at temperatures from 1250° to 1350°C for slags ranging in composition from iron saturation to magnetite saturation. Also, equilibrium CO,: CO ratios and slag compositions were determined for the univariant systems: gas: liquid slag: silica: iron gas: liquid slag: silica: magnetite Experimental Methods The experimental procedure was essentially the same as that used in the previous study of iron-silicate slags saturated with solid iron," but in order to work with the silica-saturated slags an all-silica crucible assembly was used. A liquid slag was prepared from pure prefused stock materials and brought to equilibrium with the silica crucible at the desired temperature. Recent analysis of backfilling material has shown that a finer size distribution is preferable for stope filling. In order to increase crusher throughput and pit productivity, a reassessment of the quarrying operation was conducted. Part of that reassessment was a review of blasting practice. Six means of reducing the average muckpile fragment size were examined. Different blast initiation and charging options were compared, and patterns using smaller hole sizes were designed, analysed with the JKMRC 3x3o software, then drilled and fired. The ground vibration and face movement was recorded and compared. To determine whether the Kuz-Ram model could be used in an economic analysis of the quarry operation, the fragmentation distribution of the small diameter hole blasts was determined. Photographs of the muckpiles were taken and digitised. However subsequent analysis indicated that a satisfactorily large photo sample was only obtained from the smallest diameter hole blast. The Kuz-Ram fragmentation model prediction was found to be within the confidence limits of those results. An engineering and cost comparison between the blasts was made.

Erodibility of reclaimed surface mine soils is a subject in need of quantification. Effects of soil erosion from reclaimed areas may damage surrounding areas and the quality of water in nearby streams and lakes. It may also reduce the potential productivity of the reclaimed site. A study was conducted to determine erodibilities of different reclamation treatments and a nearby unmined soil at three Indiana strip mine sites. A rainfall simulator was used to artifically erode plots con¬structed within seven treatment categories and the unmined soil. Soil erodibility was assessed in terms of the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) K factor. Values for K calculated from field data were compared to values predicted from independently measured soil properties. Differences in soil erodibility between treatments were site specific. Unmined soil had the highest calculated erodibility at one site but at two other sites soils having reclaimed A horizons were highest. Shaley overburden treatments had the lowest calculated erodi¬bility. Predicted soil erodibility was usually lower than that calcu¬lated from field data. Site specific slope gradient factors (S) were developed for reclaimed A horizon treabnents. This was done because the USLE S factor overestimated the measured soil loss at steeper slopes.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and may I extend a particularly warm welcome to our shores to those of you who have travelled from overseas to attend this conference. I trust that you will find your visit to New Zealand both rewarding and enjoyable.   This is now my fourth appearance at a New Zealand minerals conference, the second of which has been jointly co-hosted by AusIMM and Crown Minerals. Since taking on the role of Associate Minister of Energy, I have had the opportunity to meet most of the industry players, and to visit a good number of the major mining operations. Through all of this I have become increasingly aware of not only how dynamic the minerals and coal industry is but also the array of factors that affect investment decisions in this business. Many of these factors, such as commodity prices and availability of investment funds, are determined primarily on the international stage. Others however, such as the allocation, regulatory and the fiscal regimes for minerals, are closer to home and are directly influenced by government policy decisions. I will talk more on what the government proposes in this area shortly.   But first, I would like to commend you all on your industryÆs continuing contribution to New Zealand Æs economy. 2004 has seen New Zealand Æs mineral and coal output top $1 billion for the second consecutive year. To put this achievement in perspective, it represents a staggering 47 per cent increase over the national output value recorded just five years ago. Notable contributions over the year came from gold which increased production to 10.2 tonnes (up nine per cent), ironsand production at 2.3 Mt (a 20 per cent increase), and industrial rocks and building stones (up six per cent) with rock for building, cement and roading showing significant rises on the back of strong regional growth and infrastructure development. Many regions, in particular Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Southland, recorded significant increased regional activity with supply often struggling to meet demand. By contrast the coal sector had a relatively steady year with production remaining stable at just over five million tonnes for the second year running. Coal exports however are now consistently exceeding two million tonnes annually, generating export earnings of over $200 million, and could well be higher with rail capacity improvements. Many countries throughout the world are now importing our high quality bituminous coal for steel manufacturing and other industrial uses.

A number of highly instrumented free fall tests were performed on an arrestment system for a man cage in a vertical shaft. Tests were conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines free fall test tower at the Colorado School of Mines. A single tooth safety dog was used to stop on 4x6-in. Keruing (Phillipine mahogany) wet and dry wood guides. The safety dog had a penetration depth of 1 in., an adjustable width from 1-1/2 to 2-1/4 in., and a tooth angle of 80 deg. Twenty-seven free fall tests were performed covering a range in weights from 3-1/2 to 10-1/2 tons, hoisting velocities from 850 to 1350 feet per minute. Average g loads were measured from a low of 0.6 to a high of 3.4. The electronic instrumentation included piezoelectric and seismic mass accelerometers, strain gages on structural and mechanical elements, load cells in the guides, and distance measuring. Computer analysis was used to correlate with experimental measurements used to calculate stress. A statistical analysis gave no indication that the velocity or area affected the wood crushing stress. The instrumentation revealed a chatter occurring during the stop as shown by the accelerometers, strain gages, and load cells. Additional work is required to analyze this newly discovered phenomenon. The chatter imposes loads much higher than the average g load.

Cold Ocean Placers: Polar storms, interstadial littorals and crustal adjustments. Polar storms with consistent strong winds in the Southern, Antarctic Ocean are responsible for placer deposits on both the east and west coasts of Australia, on the west coast of New Zealand, as well as on the coasts of South America and Africa. Arctic winds, confined by both land and ice, generate similar placers in Labrador and Greenland as well as on the coasts of Scotland, Norway, Hudson's Bay, Nome, Goodnews Bay, Kamchatka and the north coast of Siberia. Tasman and Labrador seas have several parallels to Newfoundland, including north-south polar waterways, young spreading ocean floors, and youthful coastal escarpments with glaciated coasts. Black sand beds in beach deposits on the modern and Pleistocene transgression strandlines, skewed to the distal ends of beaches, and set into either bedrock or sediment fill, are the locus of the light-heavy mineral placers with titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements; chromium; iron; and tin. Gold and platinum group elements are the ultra heavy minerals at one end of the spectrum and tend occur in proximal placers generated, either directly from bedrock sources, or as minor by-products in distal light-heavy mineral placers. Diamonds are unusual in that the value is only in the larger stones, despite the formation of beach sand and aeolian placers in the littoral zone, and the sites of concentration are in very high energy bedrock traps, on terraces that are mined to depths of 100 metres below sealevel.

Some facilities require ground vibration limits that are far below typical vibration levels of interest in most blasting situations. A possibly extreme example of such a facility might be the proposed SSC (Supercollider Super Conductor) high energy particle study system. The applicability of conventional blast vibration predictors for such a low amplitude vibration is highly uncertain. For this preliminary study, a series of field measurements are made, and the results integrated in a set of vibration predictor equations. Ground vibrations induced by blasting operations at one proposed SSC site are monitored at close distances (hundreds of feet), intermediate distances (miles), and long distances (tens of miles) from the blasts. Peak particle velocities are recorded at short distances, ground displacements at other points, as well as frequencies. Theoretical analyses are performed by integrating all data in a variety of ground vibration predictors. From the statistical analysis of the data, ground motions at various points along the ring site are predicted for a given charge weight. The approach taken appears adequate for making tentative estimates of exceedingly low amplitude vibrations at great distances from mine blasts.

A larger, slow-speed, under-loaded ball mill and hydraulic classifier have almost doubled grinding efficiency at the lsabella mill. TENNESSEE Copper Co. operates two ore con-A centrators, the London and Isabella mills near Copperhill, Tenn. In 1948 and 1949 the small ball mills and rake classifiers in the London concentrator were replaced by one large ball mill and one hydraulic classifier. This new ball mill was designed oversize so that it could be operated at slower than normal speed. The proper operating conditions were established and the results published.' Later it was found that this mill operated more efficiently with a small ball charge." While this London grinding practice was being developed, the Isabella grinding circuit was not changed in any way. It remained a conventional two-stage rod mill—ball mill combination, the rod mill in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with a rake classifier. Study of the data indicated that grinding cost could be lowered by converting to the London practice, but not enough would have been saved to warrant the expense of converting. No plan for improving this grinding operation could be developed. In 1953 this study was reopened when plans were made to increase the Isabella mill output from 1150 to 1500 tpd. At this time the grinding circuit consisted of a 6x12 rod mill followed by a 6x12 ball mill in closed circuit with a 6-ft rake classifier. Another 6x12 ball mill and 6-ft rake classifier would have been sufficient equipment and would have been the simplest and cheapest installation. However, this would have offered no improvement in grinding efficiency or operating cost. If, on the other hand, the grinding operation could be converted to the London practice, by installation of one large 101/2x9x9 tricone mill and a 10-ft hydroscillator,2 lower operating costs would justify the additional investment. Economics: Table I presents estimates for the two schemes for enlarging the Isabella mill. In the first scheme, column 1, one 6x12 ball mill and one 6-ft rake classifier were to be added. In the second scheme, column 2, the existing small ball mill and rake classifier were to be retired and one large mill and hydroscillator were to be installed. Estimated savings from the difference in operating costs made an attractive return on the additional investment for the large mill and hydroscillator. Actual costs of carrying out this plan are tabulated in column 3b. It will be seen that these costs follow the estimates in column 3a very Closely. The return on the additional investment is calculated from the difference in the operating cost in column 1 and the actual operating cost in column 3b. This too come very close to the estimate. Power and Steel: Power requirements and steel consumption for the rod mills and ball mills, both actual and estimated, are presented in Table 11.

Greater, emphasis is being placed on recovering nickel from laterite ores by ammonia leaching techniques. New methods are required for lower cost, non-polluting techniques to separate more efficiently the metals of interest. Liquid ion exchange techniques meet these requirements with the added advantage of producing salable electrowon nickel cathodes at the plantsite. A complete solvent extraction- electrowinning process is described, including preliminary engineering and cost data for a typical plant producing 50 million pounds of nickel per year.

"The Kerr-Addison mine is on the northeast shore of Larder Lake in the township of McGarry, District of Timiskaming, Ontario. It lies just south of the highway leading to the town of Kirkland Lake, 25 miles to the west.The property was first staked in the summer of 1906, by a party of prospectors led by a Dr. Reddick of Ottawa. Subsequent assessment work resulted in the erection of a 20-stamp mill in 1908. Gold from this mill was used in the first gold coins to be minted in Canada. The operation did not prove successful, however, and mining was suspended. In 1914 a consider-able amount of underground development was undertaken by the Associated Goldfields Co., without success.In 1936 Kerr-Addison Gold Mines Co. carried out large-scale sampling from four adits driven into the hillside at the mine. Results were not satisfactory, but it was decided to drill one last deep diamond drill hole from surface. The hole cut a wide section of gold ore. With this encouragement, further development outlined a large tonnage of ore, and a 500-ton mill was put into production in May, 1938. In 1939, its first full year, the mine produced 54,480 ounces of gold and 2,732 ounces of silver. By 1955 the mill had been expanded to a rate of 4,549 tons daily, and in this year 427,193 ounces of gold and 23,490 ounces of silver were produced.From 1938 to the end of 1955 the total production, from 17,473,797 tons milled, has been 3,607,462.74 ounces of gold (0.2064 ounces per ton), and 182,278.56 ounces of silver, with a total value of $131,073,037."

Cobalt consumption will increase during the next decade at an average rate at least equal that of nickel. In the past, use of cobalt has at times been curtailed by lack of availability or by high price. In the future, output of cobalt derived from copper ores and iron sulfides will continue to grow and output of cobalt from nickel ores will be greatly increased. There should therefore be an adequate supply of this metal at a reasonable price. Nickeliferous limonites constitute by far the largest known terrestrial reserves of cobalt. A process has been conceived, based upon selective reduction and aqueous chlorination for treatment of such ores. The proposed procedure permits good extraction of the ore's cobalt content, comparable to that of the nickel, and is adaptable to large-scale, automated unit operations. Chlorine leaching of the ore enhances its value as a potential source of iron and chromium. Over four thousand years ago, cobalt pigments were employed for decorative purposes in some glass and glazes of Egypt and Persia, and by 1000 B.C. they were widely used in the Middle East.' " However, prior to 1914, virtually no cobalt was produced as metal and ceramics remained the largest consumer of the element as oxide. During World War I cobalt-containing high-speed steels came into their own and the metal's merit in magnet steels was established.

The formation of slip bands in crystalline solids undergoing plastic deformation has recently been treated as a problem of nu-cleation and growth.' A simplified theory was developed and shown to be qualitatively consistent with certain experimental observations reported in the literature, such as the frequent failure of slip bands to traverse the entire crystal, the effect of specimen diameter and temperature on the yield stress, and the occurrence of incubation periods in the deformation of suddenly loaded crystals. The theory further predicts the appearance of transients in the rate of strain of a crystal when the applied stress is suddenly changed from one constant value to another. A transient consists of a discontinuous change in the strain rate followed by a gradual approach to a steady-state value. Such transient behavior apparently has not been recognized in previous experimental work. The preliminary experiments reported in the present paper were undertaken to confirm the existence of the predicted transients and thus to determine whether a more detailed treatment of the nucleation theory of slip might be theoretically and experimentally fruitful. Experimental Procedure A simple creep apparatus was assembled as shown in Fig I. Very little insulation was used on the furnace in order to facilitate rapid changes of temperature. Temperature was measured with a thermometer placed in the center of the furnace and was controlled by adjusting the Variac setting. The specimens were cold-headed in split-cylinder grips. Kola Mining Institute has been carrying out investigations of the possibility to steepen the walls of the Kovdor open pit with the design depth of 600 m. Steeping (up to 60°) wall angles is done by double height (24 and 30 m) benches with vertical slopes. One of the safety factors of mining with such walls is choosing the width of the safety berms preventing against rock falling from the slopes into the pit working area. The test on rock falling from 24 m benches has shown that vertical slopes are not more dangerous compared to the inclined(60-75°) ones.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines study is to determine the structural integrity and stress state of coal structure using seismic techniques. Bureau personnel conducted seismic transmission and refraction surveys on yield pillars and seismic tomography on rigid pillars. The pillars studied were in the headgate at increasing distances from the working face of a longwall coal mine, effectively evaluating pillars at lowering stress states and increasing levels of structural integrity. By examining characteristics of the seismic wave, including velocity and frequency, the survey results are used to infer yield zone thickness, core mss state, and stress distribution. An accurate definition of these parameters can not only provide mine engineers a useful tool for evaluating mine design, but also give valuable insight into the inherent safety of the mine structure.

In 1989, worldwide total mineral industry activity registered advances from 1988. The advances may not have been as noteworthy as in 1988, but they can be regarded as a worthy theme for this article. The momentous political events throughout the centrally planned economy world had only a modest impact on actual 1989 industry performance. But these events have such potential for worldwide changes in economic activity in future years that they dwarf the actual happenings of 1989 in the minerals industry. Perhaps most significant factor here is the rapidity with which these changes have occurred. The end of World War II saw the almost immediate division of the world into major economic blocs. Since then, mineral industry activities and other industrial operations have been governed, to a considerable extent, by this partitioning. The developed market economy nations have operated as a group, the centrally planned economy states as another group. And these two groups essentially have vied for recognition in mineral industry operations in the developing economy states of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The boundaries of these country blocs were fixed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. They were not markedly altered in the ensuing 40 years. We have seen the establishment of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the continued Arab-Israeli confrontations in the Near East, the upheavals surrounding the rise of Moslem Fundamentalism in Iran, and the establishment of Soviet-oriented governments in Cuba and Nicaragua. These events have had notable effects on the world economy. But they have done little to change the pattern of market economy states functioning as a competitive bloc with the centrally-planned economy countries.

Mr. Shaw's work showed the dodecyl mercaptan as a very good collector compared with other collectors on Cu-Mo ores, Mo ores, and for Au and Au-Ag ores plus Pt ores. However, as one who has had extensive experience on Cu-Mo ores, the work is not complete in making only a rougher concentrate with a collector; the work must be carried on in making a Cu-Mo separation. Did Mr. Shaw do any of this work? Before trying the dodecyl mercaptan as a Cu-Mo collector for the Cu-Mo ore it would be well to have any new work conducted knowing how the reagent acts on the Mo. Will it allow a good separation? The use of the collector at Palabora was also mentioned. From some earlier literature I thought that the reagent has been used as an oxide Cu collector after the sulfide mineral was floated out. I thought the pH at this point was about 1.5-3.0. I would like to have this point clarified.
