Part I in this series of papers considered the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical testing and initial process development for this technology. This initial work resulted in the development of a process flowsheet utilizing superfine grinding (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160° to 170ºC, followed by conventional solution extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) for the recovery of copper. However, this process required a significant amount of concentrated acid to be fed to the pressure leach vessel to meet the reaction requirements, representing a cost of between $0.03 and 0.05/lb copper (2006 basis) produced by the process. It was immediately recognized that the development of a process that did not require such a large acid addition would be advantageous. This paper, which is Part II in the series, describes the development of a process that incorporates medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW) in a novel and innovative process flowsheet. Phelps Dodge (a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc.) refers to this as the ?MT-DEW-SX? process. Part III in this series covers the large-scale demonstration of the MT-DEW-SX process at Bagdad, Arizona; and Part IV addresses the development and design of a full-scale commercial application at Morenci, Arizona.

Underground caverns stability and excavatability of rock masses are of significance in geotechnical engineering, in both design and construction stages. Risks associated with underground group caverns of Houziyan hydropower station in southwestern China are growing as a result of continuous excavation-induced unloading. To improve our understanding of the underground caverns instability and resolve the complex subsurface conditions of the highly fractured rock mass, a high resolution microseismic monitoring system was established in the deep underground caverns, pursuing the relationship between the measured data about microseismic activity and excavation damage zones of surrounding rock mass. Through analyzing the tempo-spatial distribution of microseismic activity, excavation damage zones and potential risk regions in underground caverns were identified. Furthermore, the correlation between microseismic activity and pre-existing geological structures, as well as traditional monitoring was analyzed. In order to validate the correlation between seismicity and potential slip surface of underground caverns, a model was implemented into numerical code to further evaluate the deformation and stability of surrounding rock mass. The monitoring results demonstrate that microseismic events mainly occur at high stress concentration regions, which coincides with the results obtained from numerical analysis. Therefore, the comprehensive method incorporating microseismic monitoring and numerical analysis, as well as traditional monitoring and filed observation has been proven to be very promising in deformation and even instability prediction of surrounding rock mass in underground caverns subject to delineation of potential slip surfaces and excavation damage zones.

An effective elution technique has been developed for recovering uranium from ion exchange resins loaded in the carbonate leaching process. The procedure employs direct elution with acid. In comparison with conventional base elution, the procedure yields eluate of higher uranium concentration, results in a more complete elution, keeps the performance of the ion exchange resin at the fresh stage, reduces acid consumption, eliminates carbonate consumption and reduces waste for disposal. The technique has been successfully demonstrated in the field and patented. It lends itself to commercialization.

Contiguous bored piles have been used in the past for retaining the sides of deep excavation. An innovative version of this method was adopted successfully in two prestigeous projects in Bombay in which in a very constricted and congested locality, adjoining seashore at Walkeshwar, 14 m deep excavations with vertical sides were required. 600 mm dia bored cast-in-situ piles were first installed at 1.2 m c/c and subsequently as the excavation proceeded, they were tied to cast-in-situ RCC waling beams. The shear connectors to the beams were pre-fixed to the pile reinforcing cage at specified depths. The pile / waling beam system was anchored into the ground by installing inclined prestressed cable anchors at the designed depths. The waling beams were also used to support the brickwalls, which formed the required backup wall for fixing the tiled water proofing system. Catch-drains were installed behind the brickwalls for relieving the ground water pressure and thus ensuring a very economic design. The adequacy of the system was proven in that where the system was not installed in time, failure of the sides occurred during monsoon. Whereas in the areas where the above retaining system was installed, there were no problems inspite of heavy monsoon and surcharge of construction materials and equipment. The system became a very effective and economic alternative to an anchored diaphragm wall. The paper presents the case studies of these two projects.

INTRODUCTION Because large aqueous suspensions of various fine solids originate during the beneficiation of ores, the Mining Industry constantly requires efficient and feasible dewatering methods. Among the techniques currently in use (1,2), filtration (vacuum, press) and centrifugation are fairly expensive and thus are limited to use with more valuable materials. Furthermore, installations of reasonable size produce only moderate outputs. Therefore, tailings from ore dressing plants are usually treated by sedimentation or settling techniques with a tailings dam as the ultimate sedimentation basin (3). Apart from growing environmental and economic questions, the solid product obtained from the tailings dam basin has in most cases, a rather high moisture content and a persistent semi-fluid consistency. Thus, it is difficult to transport and use further. On the other hand, the solids may be utilized as a filling material, fertilizer, etc. providing they are dry enough and properly granulated. Demands for an improved technique are met to a great extent, by the technique presented in this paper. AGGLOMERATION OF FLOCCIJLATED SLIMES Origin and Qualitative Description of the Process Phenomena of consolidation and pellet formation in flocculated fines were first observed by Yusa and Gaudin (4) while studying rheological properties of flocculated kaolinite. On this basis, methods of separating liquid from solids have been worked out (5-7) and many possibilities for application have been suggested (5,6). Yusa termed the technique "wet pelletization''.

Approach Use short-term gravimetric sampling to determine the severity of various dust sources, and to evaluate dust control techniques used in longwall mining. Short-term gravimetric sampling can be used to isolate dust levels produced by various dust sources. How It Works Traditionally, gravimetric samples have been collected over an 8-hour shift, yielding time-weighted, average dust concentrations. This method gives a good indication of the full-shift respirable dust exposure of underground workers, but is less than satisfactory for identifying dust sources, determining their severity, or for evaluating the effectiveness of dust control techniques. Short-term gravimetric sampling uses equipment available to all mine operators. Two individuals composing the survey team each collect multiple (three to four) gravimetric samples during selected segments of the mining cycle. Multiple samples are necessary to insure accuracy, and to obtain a valid average measurement of the respirable dust concentration when sampling for short periods of time (typically 20 to 30 minutes). The gravimetric instruments may be carried in a sampling package or in a "sampling vest." A fishing vest with four large pockets can be used for this purpose. The sampling pumps are carried in pockets and the sampling head assemblies arc hung across the front of the vest.

Sometimes part of the journey is by pipe line to a coastal point and tank ships are employed for the rest of the trip. When considering the biodiversity of fauna endemic to hydrothermal vents or hydrocarbon seeps one must consider not only the numbers of unique species, but also the physiological diversity (and potential biochemical/physiological uniqueness) of the fauna. The deep ocean ridge system is home to some of most extreme animal habitats found on Earth. In addition to the high pressure, low temperature, and lack of light characterizing the deep-sea in general, hydrothermal-vent environments are characterized by toxic chemicals and temperatures that would be hostile to most other animal life. Perhaps even more challenging than the absolute levels of chemicals, dissolved gases, and temperature with which vent animals contend are the extreme gradients in time and space of all of these parameters. For example, temperatures around some vent animals can fluctuate from ice-water to hot-tub levels over seconds and can exceed 350°C only inches away. Specially adapted animals not only tolerate these conditions, they often thrive under them. As a result, the biomass of many deep ocean ridge ecosystems rivals that of coral reefs and tropical rain forests. In the Gulf of Mexico, hydrocarbon seepage through the sea floor driven by salt tectonics results in environments that are geologically very different from hydrothermal vents, but are geochemically similar enough that closely related animals are found in the two habitats. This includes seep mussels, clams, shrimp, worms, and other animals whose close relatives are found in hydrothermal vent environments. Although many aspects of the biology of the animals from the two environments are very similar, there are also significant differences in their life histories and physiologies that reflect the fundamental differences in the geology of their habitats.

A low grade middling sample from Mount Isa, Australia, assaying 31.7 per cent zinc, 12.9 per cent lead and 14.5 per cent iron was leached under atmospheric pressure in sulphate and sulphate-chloride solutions with ferric ions as oxidants. About 96 per cent of the contained zinc was dissolved into a 0.5 M H2SO4 - 0.5 M Fe2(SO4)3 solution at 90¦C within three hours from a five per cent by weight slurry density mixture. The leaching process is very temperature-dependent, suggesting a surface chemical control. In the latter stage, the leaching rates levelled off and the leaching was most probably controlled by both surface chemical reaction and diffusion processes. The addition of chloride ions in the leach solution resulted in an increase in the leaching rate. About 95 per cent of the lead sulphide contained was converted to lead sulphate which precipitated and remained in the residue. Essentially no lead remained in solution and the low chloride concentration did not affect the precipitation of lead sulphate. Half of the iron orginally present remained in the residue as pyrite although essentially all the cadmium and 90 per cent of the copper initially present were dissolved. Some three per cent of sulphide sulphur was oxidised through to sulphate, about 67 per cent was converted to elemental sulphur which can be recovered by solvent extraction, the rest remained in the residue mainly as pyrite. Ferric sulphate and sulphate-chloride solutions can be used to effectively leach finely ground lead-zinc middlings and other bulk sulphide concentrates. A complete separation of zinc from lead and silver has been demonstrated.

Repeated failures in attempts to work gold-bearing gravels by means of suction-dredges have created the impression that this method is impracticable. The suction-dredges have failed from three special causes: excessive wear and frequent breakage of pump-shell, runners and liners; inability to dredge compact gravel which would not readily move towards the intake; and, most important of all, closing of the suction-pipe by stones too large to enter it. In my opinion, all three causes of trouble may be remedied: the first, by making stronger the parts most liable to wear and breakage; the second, by means for loosening the gravel at the intake; and the third, by sufficiently increasing the diameter of the suction-pipe. In suction gold-dredges, this diameter has not usually exceeded 10 or 12 in.; whereas there are few profitable gold-fields which call be considered dredge-able, in which stones more than 12 in. in diameter are not frequently encountered. II. An Effective Suction-Dredge. In harbor-operations, much larger stones are handled by suction-dredges. The large dredge of the Henry Steers Contracting Co. worked for nearly four years at League Island, Philadelphia, where it sucked up, passed through the pump, and forced through 3,700 ft. of discharge-pipe, gravel containing boulders up to 200 lb. in weight. This was done with no bad breaks and few shut-downs. The cutter and liners were the only parts liable to damage, and these were easily replaced with brief interruption of work. "INTRODUCTION In the course of Bureau of Mines investigations of iron ores near Scappoose, Columbia County, Oreg. during 1942, occurrences of laterite were noted in road cuts and outcrops at many localities in the county. In 1944, the State of Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries completed a preliminary examination of alumina-iron-bearing laterite occurrences in Washington County north of Hillsboro, Oreg.3/ Their report suggested that the lateritic material might be amenable to treatment by the Pederson process for the commercial production of iron and alumina. In order to determine the extent and character of some of the reported lateritic occurrences, the Bureau conducted preliminary explorations in Columbia County near St. Helens, Oreg., from January through June 1945. Almost simultaneously the Alcoa Mining Co. began to explore nearby areas. Their work was continued and expanded after the Bureau's work had been discontinued. This report presents the data obtained from the exploratory work of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral re¬sources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. When prospectors discovered mineralized outcrops in Pine Creek Canyon in 1916, little did they know the site was destined to become one of the world's greatest tungsten mines. Located outside Bishop in California's rugged Sierra Nevada mountain range, the mine's development imposed unique challenges to the hardiest of mining men. In its early years, the Pine Creek operation was plagued by bad luck and poor timing. But through the perseverance of a dynamic group of mining personalities, it would gain world class status. Pine Creek tungsten supplied much of the defense needs of the United States during World War II and put the Bishop area on the map as a major contributor to the nation's stockpile of strategic metals. The mine's history was shaped by world politics, the ups and downs of metals demand and economic survival through technological innovations. In contrast to many mines, Pine Creek's workings went horizontally into and then up inside the mountains - nearly to the ridgetops. This resulted in the name "Mine in the Sky" being attached to the operation. The origin of Pine Creek's ore bodies is related to the emplacement of a portion of the Sierra Nevada batholith about 100 million years ago. During the intrusive process, granitic magmas engulfed overlying calcareous sedimentary rocks, flooding them with silica-rich hydrothermal fluids and metamorphosing them to skarn. The fluids also contained tungsten, molybdenum and copper. They precipitated as scheelite, molybdenite and chalcopyrite, respectively, during the metamorphic process. The ore-bearing skarns occur as near-vertical tabular pendants in the intrusive rocks. These were later exposed by the uplift of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and glacial erosion.

The Atlantic City iron mine is located in Fremont County in central Wyoming, near the historic gold mining camps of Atlantic City and South Pass City. The mine lies on the southeast flank of the Wind River Mountains at an elevation of about 2,470 m (8,100 ft) above sea level (Fig. 1). An 81-h M2 (200-acre) tailings impoundment at the Atlantic City taconite operation has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming&apos;s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction incorporated commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300-mm- (12-in.-) thick cap of a sterile clay loam cover material. The water level was lowered in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin. A wide tailings pond spillway was built that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water-level fluctuations in the pond. Rock berms and rock snow fences were built for wind-erosion control and soil-moisture preservation. Future work includes tree planting in the protective wind/ snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences and plugging a decant pipe. US Steel opened the Atlantic City iron mine in August 1962. It closed in 1983. Taconite iron ore was mined by surface methods. The ore was magnetically separated from the waste. The magnetic concentrate was mixed with bentonite, formed into pellets and roasted to produce a blast furnace feed stock for US Steel&apos;s blast furnaces in Geneva, UT. The pellets were hauled by rail to the Geneva Iron Works. The Atlantic City Mine produced three types of wastes. These included waste rock overburden from mining, a coarse-grained (sand to small-gravel sized), nonmagnetic reject rock termed "cobbs" and fine-grained tailings ranging from 600 to 75 µm (28 to <200 mesh). Prior to installation of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) a series of laboratory tests were carried out to determine the design parameters and also determine key performance indicators (KPIs) for the industrial unit. The design parameters derived from the lab test work were then scaled up to estimate the industrial capacity of the HPGRs to be installed. These parameters include specific power draw, specific throughput, and specific force, rolls speed, product size distribution and wear rate of the rolls. This paper compares the performance of the scale-up procedure against the installed industrial size HPGR. Overall, the specific throughput of the industrial size HPGR is higher by a minimum of 30% compared to the expected scale-up value. As a result of the high specific throughput, the specific power draw and grind sizes are below the scale-up expectations in the commercial application. The impact of these factors also contribute to a lower than expected wear rate on the industrial rolls. Installed rolls achieved a service life in excess of 18,500 hours relative to the target of 6,850 hours predicted from the laboratory testing.

"Portions of the Catholic Total Abstinence Fountain in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, Pa., were in “imminent danger,” according to a restoration services request for proposals (RFP) issued by the City of Philadelphia in August 2014. Open voids in the subsurface beneath the foundation were causing ongoing settlement of the fountain.The fountain was unveiled in 1876 as an ornamental drinking fountain for the Centennial International Exhibition, which celebrated the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its creation was commissioned by the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of America, an Irish temperance organization that advocated for total abstinence from alcohol. Ironically, the fountain ran dry decades ago.The now-defunct fountain features a 100 ft (30.5 m) wide granite base with three steps in the shape of a Maltese cross. The centerpiece — enclosed by a 40 ft (12.2 m) diameter basin — is a 15 ft (4.6 m) tall statue of Moses perched atop an iglooshaped marble mound. Four subsidiary statues rise from granite pedestals at the tips of each arm of the cross, including Archbishop John Carroll, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Father Theobald Mathew and Commodore John Barry.Natural and Man-Made DamageThe City of Philadelphia’s RFP called attention to three “high priority structural areas.” It was noted that Moses, Father Mathew and the steps surrounding the fountain had been documented as public hazards. The long-term effects of water infiltration had set in, eroding mortar joints and causing some stones to jut out. Furthermore, the stone base supporting the 16 ton (14.5 tonne) statue of Moses was in danger of collapsing. The statue of Father Mathew had been struck by lightning in 1910 and was repaired with an iron and metal pin anchor system, which had succumbed to corrosion. The city considered the statue of Father Mathew as the most threatened of the statues. Mike Miluski, P.E., vice president of Compaction Grouting Services (CGS), recalled “the fountain was in pretty bad shape” as he walked onto the site in August 2016 and immediately recognized the challenges ahead."

In an effort to find better ways to dispose of potentially toxic material, the effect of longitudinal and lateral dispersion on the dilution of toxic fluids was investigated numerically and experimentally. Homogeneous and non- homogeneous tests were conducted to model this effect for surface mine backfills. These tests used a high-density zone [package] to bury undesirable material. The studies, utilizing inert tracers, showed that an increase in density in a soil will decrease the maximum level of tracer in the discharge. Within the range of experiments performed and using only natural materials, a 65 percent reduction in peak concentration was obtained.

In processing heavy mineral sands, the low feed concentration and respective high value of the desired minerals require high capacity production and sharp classification/separation techniques to reduce the specific production costs. The allflux® separator, a new process system introduced to the heavy mineral industry, meets these criteria in an economical way. Its two-stage process, a combination of rising current and fluidized bed technology, allows the treatment of extremely high massflows in a single unit. Using concepts that have proven successful in processing concrete sands for many years, testwork in coal, iron ore, and heavy minerals looks very promising.

Under the seventh 5-year plan (1986-90), the Chinese Government continued to implement reform and to open the country further to the outside world in order to accelerate the growth of its national economy. As a result of expanded foreign economic exchanges and domestic achievements in education, science and technology, and cultural and public health undertakings, the national economy was strengthened. In 1988, there was impressive growth in the Chinese economy. The gross national product (GNP) grew by 11.2070 reaching $373.4 billion; 2 the national income grew by 11.4070 to $310.9 billion. The major problem in the Chinese economy was the imbalance between high demand and insufficient supply. Chronic shortages resulted in price increases and high inflation, which averaged 19% for China as a whole and about 30% in urban areas. Macroeconomic stability took precedence over market-oriented reform initiative. Because of rapidly growing inflation, the Government re-imposed price controls and rationing in major cities in the fall of 1988. China continued to be a major world producer of minerals, metals, and fuels. Output of the principal commodities continued to rise. The largest in-crease in production was salt which rose 24% in output in 1988; followed by sulfuric acid, 14%; cement, 12%; soda ash, 9%; caustic soda, 7%; and steel, 6%. For fossil fuels, the increase in output of natural gas was 14% in 1988; followed by coal, 3%; and crude oil, 2%. The output of electricity by thermal-fired powerplants rose by 9% while that for hydroelectric power-plants rose 7%. Although China&apos;s overall energy output has increased annually since 1980, the growth in demand continued to outstrip the supply.
