The wear behavior of metal matrix composites differs from that of the monolithic metallic counterparts because composite materials have multiple constituents in their structures and these constituents wear at different rates. It was observed that under low wear stresses, abrasive wear prevailed. As the wear stress increases, pullout of reinforcement occurs and both abrasive wear and wear due to pullout contribute to the overall composite wear. A model of wear taking into account both types of wear has been developed. A critical pullout wear stress was suggested for each composite. Below the critical wear stress, no pullout of reinforcement occurs. It turns out that the critical wear stress simply equals to the ratio of the interfacial strength between the matrix and the reinforcement to the friction coefficient between the reinforcement and the wear counter surface. The critical wear stress is independent of the particle size of the reinforcement. From data on wear of 53% WC composites, the equation of wear for 32% WC composites was obtained. Experimental results agreed well with the predicted wear rate of this composites. This provides an excellent verification of the wear model developed by Lin and Deshpande. Wear data from Modi et al. in the literature were also perfectly fitted with the model.

In a previous investigation1 the authors studied the effect of pressure on the reduction of iron ores by hydrogen. With hydrogen as a reducing agent, the rate of reduction was increased substantially by increasing the pressure from 1 to 2 atmospheres. The results with hydrogen prompted the present study of the effect of pressure on reduction with carbon monoxide and with mixtures of carbon monoxide and nitrogen. Features of Reduction Process The gas stream in the lower part of the blast furnace always contains sufficient concentrations of reducing gases to complete reduction provided sufficient time is allowed for the reaction to proceed. Reducing gases react immediately with the iron oxide on the surface of lumps of ore. However, as the unreduced surface recedes from the easily accessible exterior of the lump, the reaction proceeds by virtue of the diffusion of the gases into and out of individual pieces. The rate of diffusion of gases, which undoubtedly plays an important role in the reduction of iron ores, depends on several factors, most important of which are: (1) molecular weight or density, (2) pressure, (3) temperature, (4) concentration gradient. Thus, the rate of reduction of a lump of iron ore at any temperature will depend not only on the specific reaction rate but also upon: (1) available surface of unreduced iron oxide, (2) rate of diffusion of the reducing gas to the reacting surface, (3) rate of effusion of the gaseous products of the reaction from the reacting surface, (4) adsorption of the gases on the reacting surface. The extractive industry has been faced with a situation where there has been no systematic and formalised training and education structure available. Previous structures which were available, e.g. the quarrying diploma and the mining papers as a part of an engineering degree, have suffered the same fate as the Dodo. They are now extinct.   In providing for a training strategy, the past strategies need to be examined and reasons behind their demise examined. This paper examines the reasons for past failures in education and training in the extractives industry, the factors that need to be taken into account in creating an education and training culture, the strategies required, the Government regulations and trans-Tasman agreements, and the quality management which must surround the entire training programme.

The massive use of deep foundations had a remarkable influence in the building industry in the 20th century. Piles and micropiles made possible to erect thousands of civil structures around the world, changing quintessentially the urban and rural landscapes. Especially in urban areas, the ongoing development requires not only new infrastructure, but also to increase the capacity and/or to extend the serviceability of existing structures (buildings, bridges, etc.). Factors such as the change of use of existing facilities or the requirement to comply with updated building regulations confront Civil Engineers with the question, whether to tear down and build new structures, or to reinforce the existing structures from their foundations. Micropiling has enabled designers to come up with technical feasible solutions to retrofit the existing deep foundations, making the structural reinforcement a real option, even under considerable changes in the loading conditions. The following article presents an overview of an intervention project, where micropiles were designed to reinforce the original pile foundation of an existing building, enabling it to be reused with a different structural function. This paper will focus mainly on the analysis of the interaction between the existing piles and the reinforcing micropiles, especially in terms of settlements’ compatibility. Finally, the adopted solution, with its correspondent design considerations and execution process will be presented.

The tensile properties of DGEBA/TETA epoxy matrix composites reinforced with different amounts of PALF fibers were evaluated. Composites reinforced with up to 30% in volume of long, continuous and aligned PALF fibers were tested in an Instron machine at room temperature. The fracture was analyzed by SEM. This one revealed a weak fiber/matrix interface, which could be responsible for the performance of some properties. The results showed significant changes in the mechanical properties with the amount of PALF fibers.

THIS paper relates entirely to the casting of brass under fluid pressure in steel dies. Die castings of metals and alloys of low melting point have been available for many years but the development of brass die castings has been relatively recent, occurring within the past five years. The successful development of brass die castings has resulted from the availability of alloy steels that would give satisfactory life as dies and the development of suitable die-casting machines. The melting point of copper is 1084° C. (1983° F.) and of a high brass about 900° C. (1652° F.), as compared to 327.5° C. (621.5° F.) for lead, 419.4° C. (786.7° F.) for zinc and 658.7° C. (1217.7° F.) for aluminum, temperatures that are indicative of the casting temperatures required for the various types of alloys, of which the melting points are somewhat lower than those of the pure metals.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION Electrostatic separation has found a number of applications since its initial installation as a processing method. Three broad types of electrostatic installations are discussed in order to provide a practical guide for three widely divergent uses of electrostatic separation. Only operating and installation data are covered in detail. A detailed technical treatment on the various types of electrostatic separation described in this paper can be found in the literature by F. S. Knoll, J. B. Taylor and J. E. Lawer.8, 9 ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION OF IRON ORE: WABDSH MINES, CANADA Introduction Electrostatic roll-type separator technology which had been in use in various forms since the 1920's evolved in the late 1940's when this separation process was developed and applied to the extraction of titanium bearing minerals from beach sands by J. H. Carpenter. Equipment design and industrial flowsheets developed for the recovery of rutile and ilmenite found new application in iron ore by chance in the year, 1956. From the time of the first beach sands plant, Carpco had developed other technology, gravity and magnetic separation to better serve the beach sands industry. It was in the fall of 1956 that an iron ore producer from the upper Michigan Peninsula sent a sample of jaspilite (fine-grained specular hematite in a jasper matrix) to Carpco's laboratory for the purpose of determining if a new high-intensity magnetic separator would be beneficial. Process Development W. P. Dyrenforth, while presenting a paper on the subject in the fall of 1957, recounts the laboratory tests. "High-intensity magnetic separators have been employed (for the beneficiation of iron ore) with some success and are still being investigated. Magnetic separation is a natural field of investigation, since iron and magnetism have been almost synonymous since ancient times. As a matter of fact, when Carpco first began investigating the possibilities of upgrading specular hematite, the first thought was in terms of magnetic separation; and the second thought was in terms of gravimetric separation. This discussion covers only one method of pressure drilling—that developed in the Kettleman Hills field. Thus it is probable that many departures from the procedure herein described would be advisable, and perhaps necessary, in using this method of drilling wells in other localities. Purpose of Pressure Drilling By the early part of 1936, formation pressures in the heavily produced north end of the Kettleman North Dome field had declined to range from 1000 to 1500 lb. per sq. in. This low pressure, combined with the depth of the wells (8000 to 9000 ft.) permitted water to be filtered out of the mud into the producing sands during drilling operations. The loss of water was indicated by loss of fluid from the suction tank while drilling, accompanied by an increase in mud weight. It was found that when water was added to the mud stream at such a rate as to keep the fluid level in the suction tank constant, the mud weight would not vary. This indicates that water only was forced into the sands. The rate of this loss at various wells ranged from 2 to 5 bbl. per hour. At some places complete loss of circulation occurred, and drilling mud to the extent of 200 to 1000 bbl. had to be pumped into the sands before returns were regained. It was believed that these conditions had already begun to harmfully affect production, and that such effect would become more pronounced as formation pressures continued to decline. Pressure drilling with oil was introduced because it eliminated the danger of loading the formations with mud and water. The method also afforded a convenient means of testing as drilling progressed, lessening the amount of formation testing, which had become necessary because of encroaching edge water.

Recent work with controlled laboratory tests.' field experience and a new analytical approach indicate that casing centralization, pipe movement and relative rheological properties between the mud and cement (yield point and density) are the three controlling factors in successfu1 primary cementing of dual casing. Turbulent flow has been demonstrated to be unnecessary under the severe displace ment conditions of parallel dual strings of casing. Simultaneous reciprocation of dual casing in directionally drilled boreholes is highly dependent on centralization and on the rapid initiation of pipe movement once the casing has been run to total depth. Successful cementing of 30 out of 32 dual, 3%-in casing wells substantiated these conclusions. A review of 15 dual, 3 1/2-in. casing wells completed prior to the adoption of these principles disclosed only one success. Mathematical and graphical techniques permit the engineer to analyze and anticipate the success or failure of a cementing operation. Standoff, mud displacement and reciprocation can be analyzed mathematically and planned in deep, directional or straight boreholes by review of annular geometry, relative rheological properties between the mud and cement, and forces caused by caring weight, functional drag and differential sticking. Introduction The objective in primary cementing is to displace the drilling fluid with cement that will bond to the formation and casing to prevent communication through the annulus. The predominant cause of failure appears to be channels of gelled mud that remain in the annulus after cementing.1 '* Past investigations have noted many procedures that could improve the displacement process.2-' These procedures include centralization, chemical preflushes, mechanical mud cake removers, controlled flow rates in certain regimes, pipe movement an1 control of mud and cement properties. Not until recently have the effects of many of these procedures been isolated so that their individual importance could be determined. In a recent paper,' a comprehensive and analytical laboratory study of various factors controlling the displacement process concluded that there are three major factors in obtaining complete mud displacement by the cement slurry. 1. Good relative rheological properties between the mud and cement. The cement should be heavier and have a yield point and plastic viscosity higher than the mud being displaced. Buoyancy forces often can dominate the displacement process. 2. High degree of standoff or centralization. The more centered the casing, the greater the likelihood of complete mud displacement and removal. 3. Pipe movement obtained by rotation or reciprocation. Often unfavorable rheological properties between the mud and cement, and poor standoff can be compensated by pipe movement. This work demonstrates the compatibility of the latter concepts with field results extended to the more severe dual casing displacement process. Early Experience With Dual 3'/t-In. Primary Cementing Early slim casing completions in the West Delta Block 73 field, offshore Louisiana, included 17 dual 3%-in., 3 single 3% -in. and 1 dual 2% -in. casing installations. Table I provides data on these earlier wells. Usually, common Class A cement was placed across the pay zone and 12 percent gel cement was placed to a height of 500 ft above the highest productive sand. Centralizers (6%-in. OD maximum expansion) were placed two or three per joint on both casing strings from total depth through the completion intervals and at least one per joint for the remainder of the cement sheath. A number of techniques and procedures were attempted to improve cementing success. Casing was run simultaneously or separately with a number of mud conditioning and circulating techniques. Mechanical aids such as cement bonders, slmiding sleeves, turbulizers and various sizes and strengths of centralizers were used. Common and gel cements were mixed with fresh or sea water with a number of different additives to control retardation and dispersion. Cements were thinned and mixed at high rates to try to induce turbulent flow in the annulus. On one well the "slow flow" method was used." Perforating was accomplished with a jet orienting gun. Unsuccessful cement jobs were indicated by production of extraneous fluids or by pressure communication between zones. The Concord Mine Coal Preparation Plant of United States Steel Corporation, located near Bessemer, Alabama, began operations in June, 1950. The basic cleaning circuit consisted of a Chance Cone for cleaning the 2-inch x 3/8-inch fraction and concentrating tables for cleaning the minus 3/8-inch coal fraction. Dewatering of the final product was accomplished with 35-mesh vibrating screens. However, because Concord coal is very friable (Figure 1), 85 per cent passing three mesh and 25 per cent passing 28 mesh, there was a considerable amount of fines passing through the dewatering screens. To recover these fines, the dewatering screen effluent was sent to two 70-foot diameter hydro-separators with the underflow returning to the dewatering screens and the overflow going to a 175-foot diameter thickener for water clarification, (Figure 2). As might be expected, there was a considerable amount of recirculation of the minus 35-mesh coal in this system. This degraded the coal and led to higher moistures. It also resulted in a fines bleed-off of plant water and thickener underflow to a fine-coal settling pond. In 1961, vacuum filters were installed to supplement the screens and to recover the fine coal lost in the bleed-off. The above system resulted in a product moisture of about 20 per cent. Further reduction to approximately 11 per cent was accomplished by drainage from railroad cars during transit to the coke plant. Control of the moisture at unloading was poor because of variations in operating levels and railroad car availability, but since the Concord coal constituted a smaller percentage of the coal previously used at the coke plant, the high moisture and fluctuations did not seriously hamper coking operations.
