A process for recovering manganese from low-grade manganese oxide ore through a reduction acidolysis-selective leaching method is investigated. Two types of biomass, sawdust and straw, were used as reductants. Reduction acidolysis, using concentrated sulfuric acid, was used to disrupt the structure of the biomass, allowing the biomass to be hydrolyzed into monosaccharides. Analysis by X-ray diffraction revealed that Mn2O3 was reduced to MnSO4. Then, in the selective leaching process, iron was removed through the formation of goethite. The optimized experimental parameters are as follows: reductant to ore mass ratio of 0.4, sulfuric acid to ore mass ratio of 0.9, water to ore ratio of 0.5, aging time of 18 h, leaching temperature of 95 °C, leaching time of 90 min, and solution pH of 2.5 to 2.8. Under these conditions and using sawdust as the reductant, the manganese leaching efficiency and iron removal efficiency were 91.8 and 99.2 percent, respectively.

Acid resistance, zeta potential and ESCA (electron spectroscopy. for chemical analysis) experiments were performed on emperador marble and four calcium carbonate samples (onyx calcite, travertine calcite, Iceland spar calcite and aragonite). Six fluorine-containing reagents were used to treat the surfaces of these materials: magnesium hexafluorosilicate, zinc hexafluorosilicate, sodium fluoride, zinc fluoride, strontium fluoride and stannous fluoride. The acid resistance of treated samples proved to be much higher than that of their untreated equivalents. The isoelectric point of treated samples approaches the isoelectric point of fluorite. Also, the fluorine content, as measured by ESCA, of a marble surface treated with magnesium hexafluorosilicate is much higher than that of an untreated sample. The binding energy off of fluorine and calcium the treated marble is consistent with the formation of calcium fluoride.

Wire ropes are one of the most heavily used components in a dragline. They are subjected to harsh conditions during the regular usage of a dragline in a mining operation. Hoist ropes are subjected to fatigue due to the cyclic nature of load handling as well as due to rope bending over the sheaves and the drum under load. This leads to wire breaks due to fatigue. Accumulation of a number of wire breaks close to each other can have a detrimental effect on the rope. Furthermore, to allow for the increasing demand for higher load capacity coupled with the inconvenience of having very large ropes, the factor of safety is often compromised, which increases the wear rate. Drag ropes are also subjected to heavy loads. More importantly, they are allowed to drag along the rough mine surface subjecting them to external physical abrasion. This makes the life of drag ropes one of the lowest among those used in a dragline. Suspension and IBS ropes are relatively uniformly loaded during their regular usage although they need to withstand dynamic load cycles as well as bending. Hence they tend to last for a number of years on average. The paper analyses the wear types and their severity of each of these rope applications, and suggests methods to determine rope wear rates and the resulting rope life. The paper further gives suggestions for good operating and maintenance practice that can extend the rope life and help reduce the large expenditure associated with every major rope change in a dragline.

The Rio Blanco massive hydraulic fracturing demonstration has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines, Atomic Energy Commission, and a group of 15 industry participants. CER Geonuclear Corp. has been retained as program manager to evaluate the stimulation effects of very long fractures, suitably propped open in thick sections containing multiple intervals of low-permeability gas-bearing sands. The zone of interest for this demonstration includes Fort Union and Mesaverde sands from about 5,800 to 8,.200 feet deep in Rio Blanco County, Colo., about 1 mile from the site of the May 1973 triple nuclear detonation aimed at stimulating production from the same reservoirs. Drilling the test well and evaluating the reservoir prior to fracturing was funded by Government participants; fracturing and production testing will be funded by industry. The test well has row been completed at a total depth of 8,170 feet, and data obtained from logs, cores, production and drill-stem tests indicate reservoir conditions to be less favorable for gas production than anticipated. Structural position is lower than expected, resulting in higher water saturation than was determined for the same sands at the nuclear fracturing location. The lower sands of the Fort Union sequence appear to have higher shale content than has been encountered in other wells in the area. Despite the likelihood that gas productivity will be undesirably low following stimulation, the industry participants decided to proceed with the stimulation program with the thought that the resulting data would be useful. The success of the stimulation test probably will have to be judged by production increase rather than by production volume.

This paper, the first of two papers covering the development of a metallurgical process for the treatment of a complex ore, describes the bench-scale experimental Program undertaken as a basis for initial process design. The results of using various potentially applicable process steps are detailed and the basis for selecting certain of these steps for Pilot-plant development is outlined. A process consisting of the steps of sulfate roasting, leaching, copper recovery, solution purification, zinc electrolysis, and brine leaching for lead recovery was recommended for further study. THIS paper describes the bench-scale development of a sulfate roasting process designed to recover copper, lead, and zinc from a complex ore. The extrapolation of the bench-scale results to pilot-plant design and the results of pilot-plant operation will be described by Lund, et al.' in a subsequent paper. Several years ago, the research divisions of the St. Joseph Lead Co. became responsible for the development of a metallurgical procedure to treat a complex sulfide ore containing copper, zinc, and lead sulfides. The primary objective was to devise a procedure which would permit economic recovery of the nonferrous values. As could logically be expected, the study of conventional flotation procedures was undertaken; in addition, however, because the physical nature of the mineral association in the complex ore indicated that physical methods of ore beneficiation might not prove to be entirely satisfactory, a program also was established to investigate alternative methods of direct metallurgical treatment for recovery of the metal values. Exploratory test work by the St. Joseph Lead staff led to the conclusion that a sulfate roasting technique represented the most attractive approach for a direct metallurgical process. Sulfate roasting would provide for the selective conversion of the nonferrous values to forms soluble in conventiona1.1 leaching agents and would permit their efficient separation from the insoluble iron and other gangue materials. It should allow efficient utilization of the thermal energy available from oxidation of the sulfide raw material, and might provide an opportunity for recovering byproducts such as iron and sulfur. The decision to evaluate a selective sulfation procedure as a basic processing step also was influenced by the excellent results obtained by the St. Joseph Lead Co. in using this procedure for the recovery of cadmium from zinc sulfide concentrates. The choice of selective sulfation as a major processing step served as a basis for an extended experimental investigation of the process with bench- and pilot-scale equipment to prove its feasibility. St Joseph Lead Co., aware that Battelle Memorial 1nstitute had participated in the development of several fluidized-bed sulfate roasting procedures, asked Battelle to undertake the bench-scale development of a suitable sulfation process. This paper describes the procedure used and the results obtained at Battelle in the treatment of the complex sulfide ore. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Nature of the Raw Material. The sulfide ore deposits of interest are essentially a massive sulfide, with the indivudual ore minerals being extremely fine grained and intimately intergrown with each other and with the associated gangue. The zinc in the ore is present mainly as sphalerite (ZnS), the lead as galena (PbS), and the iron either as pyrite (Fes2) or as pyrrhotite (FeS). Table I shows the chemical analysis of various individual samples of the ore. These analyses illustrate the variability of the ore body and impose a rather severe requirement on any type of metallurgical process—that of being able to tolerate probable wide variations in the assay of the head ore. Prior to rehabilitation, plant cover on quartz gravel overburden at Wangaloa coal mine was highly patchy. Stabilisation techniques have since considerably altered the condition of the main overburden yet deposits in the east and west remain largely intact. On the eastern overburden, three distinct zones of revegetation have naturally developed: Zone 1 represents a dense plant cover, Zone 2 a patchy cover and Zone 3 a sparse cover of isolated plants. Aerial photographs show much of the eastern overburden was deposited between 1940 and 1960s. Yet we found that the temporal scale of deposition did not wholly account for the differences observed in vegetation development. To investigate other influential factors, we set up 12 study plots using four replicates in each vegetation zone. The diversity and density of plants in each plot were measured to quantify the degree of vegetation development. Samples from the substrate in each plot were collected using soil cores to a depth of 10 cm. Cores were analysed for indicators of nutrient availability, metal content and physical composition. We found that substrate chemistry varied between individual study plots, but showed little difference overall along the vegetation gradient. Substrate physical differences were much greater. The ratio of coarse quartz pebbles: fines was considerably higher in Zone 3 than other zones, and within zones where plants were not growing. Bulk density also increased successively from Zone 1 - 3. We found clear evidence for the reversed stratigraphy of excavation superimposed over the time scale of deposition, and the corresponding nature of fine particles. The rate of revegetation was therefore highly dependent upon the substrate composition of the last surface deposit from the dumping truck. Our data suggests an optimum ratio exists between inert coarse material and a fine matrix for progressive natural vegetation development on mine substrates.

Industrial-mineral production contributes on the order of CDN$1.5 billion per year to the economy of Saskatchewan, Canada. Potash is the primary industrial mineral produced in the province, followed by aggregate, sodium sulphate, salt, potassium sulphate, peat, clays, silica sand, calcium-chloride brine, and "clinker." Potentially economic deposits of kaolin, diamond, and building stone are under evaluation. All of the major deposits of commodities discussed here are located south of lat 56°30'N. Most of the locations are presented on Figure 1 POTASH Saskatchewan supplies approximately 30% of the world's demand for potash. Eight conventional underground mines and two solution mines produced an all-time high of more than 13 million metric tonnes of potash (KC1) (8 million tonnes K2O equivalent) in 1997, valued at over CDN$1.4 billion. All of the mines exploit the middle Devonian Prairie Evaporite. The four potash-bearing members of the Prairie Evaporite underlie much of southern Saskatchewan and extend southward into North Dakota and Montana and east- ward into Manitoba (Fig. 2). Halite and anhydrite separate the potassic members. The evaporite beds locally are interrupted by solution structures (anomalous ground). Some of the structures may be related to deep-seated tectonic features.

Over the past 30 years, underground paste backfill systems have been implemented across the globe in many configurations, each with a primary focus of providing high quality backfill to enhance mine operations. However, a number of key design drivers are not always well understood within design engineering firms that occasionally undertake this work, leaving opportunities on the table. Perhaps not always obvious to those newly embracing paste technology, identifying key drivers and opportunities attainable through a paste backfill system is generally not straightforward, requiring innovative approaches to securing higher productivity, availability, performance, maintainability, and operator health and safety. This paper describes a number of applications and audits of paste backfill systems for several challenging mine operations. Key challenges include iterative design aspects of availability of good backfill materials, plant location and configuration, general arrangement, and binder receiving/storage systems.

In 1924, the United States Public Health Service was requested to undertake a special study of stream pollution. The Public Health Service asked the United States Bureau of Mines to take up the study because the training and experience of the personnel of the former was considered not to be as well suited to this type of investigation as that of the Bureau of Mines. Under H. Foster Bain, then Director of the Bureau, field investigations were begun in the spring of 1925. Along with mine-drainage wastes, the problem of gas-house and coke-oven waste was investigated in the laboratory and a method of treatment by sodium hydrate and benzol was found to be promising. The idea was obtained by A. C. Fieldner, chief engineer of the Bureau Experiment Stations, on a trip to Germany in 1924. He saw a practical application of the process, but obtained no information as to definite chemical or mechanical processes. Because of the then pending American patent applications by the German firm, we made no attempt to develop our findings further. Shortly afterward, a similar method of treatment was developed in the United States,' and since that time we have devoted our attention entirely to mine drainage. This paper is a presentation of some general facts and information gathered during the past five years on coal-mine drainage. Scope of Work There was such a diversity of opinion at the time this work was begun, on the whole subject and apparently so little accurately known, that it was decided to undertake a basic study from which first, certain definite information might be evident, and second, what might be considered

The attrition of activated carbon, and the loss of gold associated with it, is of significant economic importance to the operation of a CIP/CIL circuit The focus of this study was on activated carbon recovered from an elution circuit which was deemed too fine for reuse. Results of cyclosizer and laser particle size analysis identified that most of the carbon was contained in the larger size fraction suggesting formation by abrasion. Digestion and AAS analysis of the individual size fractions identified a disproportionate concentration of gold in the finer size fractions which was identified by scanning electron microscopy to be due to the presence of fine metallic gold formed as a result of the acid washing process. Attempts to strip the remaining gold using sodium hydroxide or sodium sulphide based solutions proved unsuccessful due to poor elution efficiencies and re adsorption of gold. Upgrading of the material by froth flotation was also investigated using various conventional flotation reagents which had some success in concentrating the free metallic gold, however, grade and/or recoveries were considered less than desirable. Greater success was ultimately found in the transfer of gold from the fine carbon material onto coarser virgin activated carbon using a caustic cyanide solution. Sodium sulphide, sodium chloride and ammonium chloride based solutions were also trialled but proved less successful owing to their inability to mobilise metallic gold or gold cyanide species. Repetition of the transfer process proved capable of stripping 97% of the gold contained on the carbon fines for abed volume ratio of 6:1.

The events which led to computer control of the grinding circuit at Brenda Mines are described, beginning with mill operating philosophy. High production rates are encouraged so that, despite severe upstream disturbances, a manual control method to meet this philosophy had developed. Unfortunately, due to the time interval between manual control adjustments, losses in production resulted. An analog control method was devised and, although superior to manual control in some situations, was found to suffer from several practical limitations. The data logging capabilities of a control computer seemed warranted. Circuit test- work combined with an analysis of operating data showed that (1) metallurgical personnel, at times could increase production rates by as much as 10 percent over that achieved by grinding operators, (2) the chosen data base required an increase of 2 percent or more to be statistically significant and (3) for a 2 percent increase there would be a significant rate of return of investment in a computer installation, Consequently one grinding circuit was fully instrumented, and a rented control computer was installed by Brenda personnel. Prior to installation, Brenda metallurgical and instrumentation personnel were trained in the use of the computer. An experimental program was devised with short and long term objectives. The short term objective was to develop a practical control strategy which would yield immediate production improvement. This goal has been met as described in this paper. Statistically significant increases in excess of 2 percent have been established. Work is being completed for the permanent installation of computer control on all four grinding circuits at the present time. Long term objectives are (1) off line analysis of the circuit using mathematical models of process units, (2) on line experiments to study alternative contol tactics, and (3) possible expansion of computer facilities to the crushing plant.

Norddeutsche Affinerie's routes date back to the 18th century. NA was established in 1866 as a joint stock corporation. NA's core business covers the production of copper cathodes from primary and secondary raw materials and the processing of them into wire rod and shapes. Part of the shapes are processed into pre-rolled strip and shaped wires within the Group. With some 3,200 well qualified and highly motivated employees, the NA Group produces some 560,000 tonnes of copper cathodes, 370,000 tonnes of wire rod, 230,000 tonnes of shapes, 130,000 tonnes of pre-rolled strip as well as 70,00 tonnes of strips and shaped wires annually. NA's product range is complemented primarily by precious metals, selenium, sulphuric acid, lead and nickel sulphate. The paper will give an insight into the performance of NA and its business units with regard to production, environmental and health protection and occupational safety.

This final report documents the work done by Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC), on Contract R0122026 (which began in August of 1971). Under this contract ADI provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau's programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of independent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau's contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Communications," and Volume II, "Seismic Detection and Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume. Phase I of the contract was devoted to performing an in-depth assessment of electromagnetic noise measurements taken by several contractors and other investigators, and then defining a new noise measurement program and instrumentation system tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. These data are required for use in the design of new emergency and operational communication systems. This work, and the follow-on coordination and guidance activities of ADL on this noise measurement program in subsequent phases of the contract, are treated in Part One of Volume I.

Radiation grafting of ion exchange structures contains ion exchange groups but may consist of neutral groups. High energy grafting of monomers on to polymers has-been known since 1950 (1.2); manufacture on an industrial level was-begun in 1970.(3) Proper choice of substrate and monomer will produce various ion exchange membranes with differing physico and chemical properties. Grafting a selected monomer to the proper polymer will provide selective ion exchange with assured chemical protection of the substrate. Ion exchange systems utilizing radiation grafted structures to polymers have been fabricated to "capture" gold from drag-out and rinse water and silver from cyanide rinse water. Other ion exchange systems can feasibly be produced to remove other precious metals. Rotating Cathode Technology is used to recover the metals from their concentrated eluating solutions as pure metal foil.

As a result of the Three Mile Accident and because of evidence indicating radiation protection problems, the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) undertook a major effort, with the assistance of the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), to analyze radiation protection programs at 47 commercially operated nuclear power plants. This effort, the health physics appraisal program (HPAP), using a modified management oversite and risk tree analytical logic methodology (MORT) which consisted of analytical trees with applicable questions for each tree, was subsequently extended to include USNRC licensed uranium mills. In the uranium mill appraisal, a team of four senior radiation safety professionals spent a week at each mill evaluating the total health physics program. Prior to the HPAP, the USNRC inspection efforts were designed to determine if the licensees were fulfilling the requirements of the code of federal regulations and the mills source material license. The HPAP, however, was designed and structured to facilitate an integrated look at the total program. It is also directed into areas for which explicit NRC regulatory requirements may not currently exist. The latitude of the HPAP was designed to allow professional judgement in the evaluation of program adequacy, because merely meeting the explicit regulatory requirements does not necessarily ensure an adequate and effective health physics program. The results of the first eight site visits and the generic health physics problems identified within the uranium milling industry will be identified in this paper.

The project will add a two-lane bore north of the existing three bores. The project will alleviate traffic congestion in the non-peak direction. This paper provides background on the existing facility, summarizes the need for the new fourth bore, describes the proposed improvements, sets forth the approach for project delivery, and lists some of the challenges that are expected during construction.

In this study, Mg-doped fluorapatite (Mg-FA) nanopowders were prepared through a sol-gel, technique and characterized. Designated degree of Mg2+ ions incorporation into the apatite structure was indicated by the x value in the general formula of (Ca10-xMgx (PO4)6F2), where x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1. XRD, AAS, FTIR and TEM techniques were utilized to characterize the synthesized nanopowders. In vitro bioactivity of the powders was evaluated in simulated body fluid. Powders had a crystallite size less than 100 nm. It was concluded that Mg-substitution could alter bioactivity and dissolution behaviour of Mg-FA. These two parameters were proportional to magnesium content of the powders.
