China, a globally recognized major mining country, holds one of the largest quantities of tailings pond country in the world. The total number of mines in China has been ranked first in the world. It is a major concern for Chinese safety management to give great importance for tailings pond safety, stability and sustainable development. For the past few years, China has increased efforts to investigate and govern discrete issues of tailings and to carry out a series of special renovation and comprehensive treatment actions to improve safety management levels and to decrease the likelihood of tailings pond accidents. In the end of 2015, China successfully eliminated hazardous tailings ponds and dangerous tailings ponds. Moreover, the total number of tailings decreased from 12,273 to 8,869. However, there are still 1,425 "head-top" tailings that threaten the lower masses’ safety. This greatly signifies the Chinese tailings pond safety, stability as well as sustainable development. In turn, this may improve the Chinese tailings life cycle safety management system and help reach the goal of attaining closed-loop management in the tailings pond life cycle. Based on the summary of the tailings pond accidents in both China and other countries from 1961 to 2015, and by analyzing the types and causes of accident, this paper investigated the successful experiences and effective measurements of British Columbia (Canada) and Australia in the tailings pond life cycle safety management. This paper summed up each country’s tailings life cycle safety management requirements and analysed the characteristics and differences of tailings safety management by comparing 5 aspects: tailings life cycle safety management process, main design parameter, construction requirements, monitoring, and the tailings pond closing management. Based on these observations, this paper suggests some measurements to improve the tailings pond life cycle safety management in China, such as strengthening tailings pond safety management, improving tailings classification, increasing design parameter values, establishing mine reclamation fund, and so on.

As stated in the preface, the nomenclature to be adopted for weights and measures has presented great difficulty. Agricola uses, throughout, the Roman and the Romanized Greek scales, but in many cases he uses these terms merely as lingual equivalents for the .German quantities of his day. Moreover the classic language sometimes failed him, whereupon he coined new Latin terms adapted from the Roman scale, and thus added further confusion. We can, perhaps, make the matter dearer by an illustration of a case in weights. The Roman centumpondium, composed of zoo librae, the old German ceniner of 100 pfundt, and the English hundredweight of 1112 pounds can be called lingual equivalents. The first weighs about 494,600 Troy grains, the second 721,900, and the third 784,000. While the divisions of the centumpondium and the centner are the same, the Libra is divided into 12 unciae and the pfundt into 16 unizen, and in most places a summation of the units given proves that the author had in mind the Roman ratios. However, on p. 509 he makes the direct statement that the centumpondium weighs 146 librae, which would be about the correct weight if the centumpondium referred to was a ceniner. If we take an example such as " each centumpondium of lead contains one uncia of silver", and reduce it according to purely lingual equivalents, we should find that it runs 24.3 Troy ounces per short ton, on the basis of Roman values, and 18.25 ounces per short ton, on the basis of old German. If we were to translate these into English lingual equivalents of one ounce per hundredweight, then the value would be 17.9 ounces per short ton. [ ]

The Southern African region contains abundant gold tailing heaps that are an environmental concern due to dust pollution and chemical contamination of nearby water bodies. Nevertheless, these heaps contain gold with potential to be extracted for financial gain. In this study, the feasibility of extraction of gold from a Witwatersrand gold tailings using glycine was investigated using a two-level full factorial design. Effects of variables such as glycine concentration at levels of 0.5–1.5 M with a solid–liquid ratio of 50–200 g/L were investigated. Although the solid–liquid ratio used in this study was below the industrial norm, it provides a starting point for investigating the applicability of this technology. To enhance the gold extraction, potassium permanganate pretreatment and copper ion addition were adopted. The results revealed that 91.4% gold extraction was achieved after 24 h pre-treatment of the tailings using 2 g/L potassium permanganate followed by subsequent leaching using 1.5 M glycine at pH 12, with 50 g/L solid–liquid ratio and 2 g/L copper ions. Statistically, the solid–liquid ratio and potassium permanganate pre-treatment of the tailings were found to be significant at 95% confidence interval, whilst interactions of copper ions and glycine concentration were significant factors. The work demonstrates that potassium permanganate pre-treatment prior to glycine leaching of low-grade secondary gold resources, such as tailings, can be beneficial. Furthermore, the methodology developed in this work provides an opportunity for further investigation of the recovery of gold hosted in complex mineralogical matrices.

Precious metals are commonly believed to be recovered along with sulfide minerals in flotation, but a few neutron activation analyses showed that the recoveries of gold and silver were unexpectedly low. Recoveries of platinum group metals remained unresolved due to interferences in the analyses. Electron micro-probe, scanning electron microscope and scanning auger microprobe analyses have identified nickel arsenide minerals in the ore and confirmed a close association of platinum group metals with the arsenide minerals as minute inclusions. These results indicated a need for re-evaluation of flotation procedures which have so far ignored special problems related to arsenide minerals. The electrochemical and flotation behaviors of nickel arsenide and their implications to the flotation recovery of arsenide minerals from copper-nickel bearing Duluth gabbro are presented.

The Skorpion process comprises three processing steps, atmospheric leaching in sulphuric acid, zinc solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce special high grade zinc. The major mode of impurity transfer was attributed to crud runs in the solvent extraction circuit. Crud may be described as a heterogeneous, partly inorganic, partly organic mass of material which accumulates predominantly at the interface between organic and aqueous solutions. The paper describes the route causes of the crud formation in the solvent extraction circuit and optimisation strategies which are being followed to prevent impurity excursions in electrowinning. Recent whole-rock geochemical data from nearly 900 fresh drill core and underground samples taken from seven central Victorian gold deposits confirm the presence of distinct and identifiable primary alteration haloes surrounding the deposits. Ferroan carbonate alteration extends for up to several hundred metres away from turbidite-hosted gold mineralisation outside of contact metamorphic aureoles. A less distinct phyllic alteration zone can be identified using geochemical molar ratios or short wave infrared analysis. It generally overlaps a sulfidic halo characterised by disseminated pyrite and in close proximity to mineralised structures, arsenopyrite. The extent of the sulfidic halo can be traced using low-level analysis of pathfinder elements such as S, Au, As and Sb. Recognition of these alteration features enlarges the target for exploration and provides a tool by which drilling can be directed towards mineralised structures. The semi-solid metal casting process results in a unique solidification path. The microstructural features that were identified during the characterization of the as-cast microstructure, were used as evidence of the process history in order to determine the solidification path followed during the evolution of the microstructure. The morphology of the grains was characterized using SEM and the extent and distribution of the elemental segregation within the grain structure was analysed using EDS. Zirconia-based refractorics arc finding increasing use for specialized applications in steelmaking technology, making optimization of their resistance to corrosion by steelmaking slags more important. Samples of calcia- and magnesia-stabilized zirconia refractories have been exposed to slags in the CaO - FeO - SiO, system at 155WC for the purposes of measuring corrosion rates. Examination by SEM/EDX and cathodoluminescence of the mineralogy of the attacked specimens reveals important clues about the mechanism of attack.

Four magnetic fleld balances and several spare magnetic systems were purchased by the Brazilian National Department of Mineral Production from the Askania Werke A. G., of Berlin, in 1932. Preliminary field tests on this new equipment showed one of the vertical component magnetic systems to be defective. A series of measurements designed to investigate the functioning of these instruments, and particularly the defective system, showed it to have an abnormally low magnetic moment, as compared to the satisfactory systems, and a high-temperature correction that was opposite in sign to that which would be expected for a noncompensated magnetic system. Since these systems were of the "temperature compensated" type, this condition indicated an accidental overcompensation. Attempts to correct for this overcompensation by readjustment of the compensating masses on the aluminum and Invar spindles failed because the distance by which the position of the masses could be shifted was insufficient. The temperature effect was reduced by this readjustment but was not entirely eliminated, as was to be desired. Theoretical deductions indicated that the defective condition of the system could be explained as due to three possible causes: (1) considerable loss of magnetic moment of the system; (2) increase in the magnetic temperature coefficient of the laminas; (3) dislocation of the component parts of the system caused by a shock experienced after it left the factory and before it was tested in Brazil. Later information received from the factory after examination of the returned system indicated that the third cause probably played the most important role. Temperature calibrations of the defective system for various positions of the counterweights brought out an important point, which it is believed

A mathematical model based on the pertinent fluid dynamic equations to predict the performance of the hydro cyclone has been developed which will eventually replace the empirical model. Experimental measurements of fluid velocity profiles made in a 75 mm hydrocyclone by laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) agree well their predictions by solving the Navier-Stokes equations numerically. Particle slip velocity and particle trajectory were computed which in turn, yields separation curve of the hydrocyclone.

The early methods of mining anthracite in the steep pitching Mammoth bed consisted in driving breasts up the pitch from the gangways and airways driven in the bed along the strike (Plate 2, Fig. 1). Breasts are simply rooms driven up the pitch the full thickness of the bed (Plate 2, Fig. 2), having a width of from 18 to 30 ft., and a manway or traveling way on one or both sides. (For detail of breast method see Whildin, Trans., vol. 50, p. 704). Many difficulties were encountered, and the maintenance cost of the timbered gangways was so great as to be practically prohibitive. To reduce this expense, the gangways were driven in the thin Skidmore bed underlying the Mammoth, and the coal mined through rock holes. (Plate 2, Fig. 2, A.) It was found that after the breasts were driven up 80 to 100 ft., the coal almost invariably rushed or "ran away," making good ventilation almost impossible and the extraction of coal from the upper portion of the lift very difficult. The economic length of a lift is from 200 to 250 ft., and the percentage of extraction by the old method above mentioned was often under 50 per cent., while the coal recovered was so badly broken up as to reduce materially the percentage of large sizes. Principles of Present Mining Methods The present methods designed for the recovery of a maximum percentage of coal and a maximum yield of the prepared sizes depends largely on the following principles: First.—Formerly the practice in mining bituminous coal was to space rooms so that as much coal as possible could be extracted in first mining (Plate 3). The small pillars were often lost, and an improvement in total extraction was found in the system of driving narrow rooms with wide pillars, with a much larger final recovery (Plate 4). WET-PROCESS coal-washing tables as we know them today have been in use in this country for approximately 25 years. The literature records only a few table installations worthy of note prior to adoption of the present-day differential-motion table. According to Phillip,1 six Campbell bumping tables were being operated by the St. Bernard Coal Co., Earlington, Ky., in 1893. As late as 1923, according to Richardson, 2 such tables were in operation in the Rosedale washery of the Cambria Steel Co., at Johnstown, Pa. Bumping tables probably were not used to any considerable extent except in the plant at Earlington, and at two or three plants in Pennsylvania, but they may be considered as. forerunners of the present-day coal-washing table. The transition from bumping tables to the type of tables now in use signalized a revolutionary change in table design. The advantages of the new design over the old were so outstanding as to make its adoption inevitable. BUMPING TABLES Bumping tables, as the name implies, utilized a bumping action for conveying the refuse and discharging it over the refuse end. The tables were hung from rods attached to overhead supporting beams. A shaft and cam arrangement at one end of the table served as the actuating mechanism and imparted to the table an endwise, back-and-forth, swinging motion. A bumping block was fixed in the proper position at the shaft end, so that the table would strike against it at the end of each backward swing. The hanger rods or stirrups were so adjusted as to give the table a slight uphill slope toward the refuse end; that is, the end next to the driving mechanism. The feed box was near the upper end of the table and designed to spread the mixture of coal and water over the width of the table. Wash water was added a short distance below the feed box. With the table in motion and coal mixed kith water being fed to it through the feed box, a certain amount of stratification took place, depositing heavy refuse at the bottom of the bed in contact with the surface of the table. "The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mechanochemical activation by planetary milling as method to enhance the recovery of cerium from rare earth ores. For this purpose, a weathered ore was first ground by planetary milling and then leached by sulfuric acid. The influence of planetary milling was investigated by assisting the experiments with X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) in cerium LIII-edge and inductively coupled plasma spectrometry to measure the concentration of cerium dissolved by leaching. Results showed that, by increasing the grinding time, although the particle size of the specimen increased due to agglomeration, the recovery of cerium significantly increased. This finding clearly indicated that a smaller particle size actually hinders the recovery of cerium. In particular, XAFS analysis revealed that the longer the grinding time, the more tetravalent cerium could be converted into trivalent cerium and such conversion, also called mechanochemical reaction was beneficial to the recovery of cerium. Based on the obtained results, it was confirmed that approximately 70% of cerium could be recovered by mechanochemically activated leaching of rare earth ores.INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements comprising lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. Since REEs have various unique physical and/or chemical properties, they have become essential materials for advanced application (Adachi, 2015). REEs used in industry are usually supplied as rare earth minerals. In the last decades, flotation, gravity separation, magnetic separation and leaching have been widely applied to recovery of REEs from rare earth minerals like monazite (Archana, Rekha, Manis, Jitendra, & Jin, 2015). Among these operations, leaching has been widely studied in the recent years to improve the state of the art (Archana, Rekha, Manis, Jitendra, & Jin, 2015; Xiao, Feng, Huang, Huang, Chen, Liu, Wang, & Long, 2016; Farzaneh, Fereshteh, & Ahmad, 2017). Aiming to enhance recovery of REEs from rare earth minerals, a possible advancement of leaching technology could be the mechanochemically activation of the ore by high-intensity milling (Alorro, 2016). In the mechanochemical activation, an improvement of the leaching performances can be achieved through high-intensity milling operations which result into a dramatic decrease of the mineral particle size with a consequent improvement of the physical kinetics of leaching. Furthermore, the high mechanical energy provided to the sample during milling can determine the rupture of the crystal structure of the mineral, thereby transforming it into a more leachable form."

"CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal-oil-mixture (COM) business for over five years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August 1979. For over two years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large-scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit.CoaLiquid has conducted commercial-scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.IntroductionCoaLiquid, Inc. officially dedicated its plant on August 31, 1979, at a ceremony presided over by the then Governor of Kentucky, The Honorable Julian Carroll. The dedication marked the culmination of over three years of research and development work and marked the beginning of a new era of coal-oil-mixtures as a commercial commodity in the marketplace. As the first such plant in the United States, it set the tone for construction to follow.CLI was originally owned and managed by a group of entrepreneurs from Kentucky who had developed the process and constructed the plant on purely private investment and conventional financing. Beginning in late 1976, with a pilot-scale operation, also located in Shelbyville, Kentucky (near Louisville), CLI began producing a stable mixture of 50070 coal, 30% to 40% oil and 10% to 20% water by weight. The technology employed was developed by Eric C. Cottell of Long Island, New York and is covered by U.S. Letters Patent No. 3,941,552. Since the pilot plant operation, CoaLiquid has made many refinements to its process and in fact has added new technology to its portfolio of patents and patents pending. Further refinements to the product now produce a stable mixture of 50% coal, 40% No.6 fuel oil and 10% water by weight."

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1878.) As the forms of blown-out furnaces are of much interest to iron-masters and metallurgists, the manner of taking the accompanying sections of the Cedar Point stack is here given. The diagrams show the original and also the final shape of the furnace after a two years and twelve days' blast, during which the following solid materials passed through it, viz.: Coal, 41,000 tons; ore, 57,000 tons ; limestone, 30,000; total, 128,000 gross tons. Product, 41 1/4 tons per day Bessemer pig iron. The apparatus used in taking the sections was a modification of that proposed by Mr. Frank Firmstone,* and consisted of a sliding rule, to follow around the circumference of the stack, which rule was connected by a string to a segment of a circle of 24 inches radius. The segment was carried by an arm which connected it to a hub as a centre, 2 inches in diameter. A second string was wound around the hub, and communicated motion to a pencil-carrier, the pencil of which marked out on paper the exact outline, and reduced it to a scale of 1/2 inch to the foot. The whole machine was made in about three hours, with the facilities of a carpenter's shop, and gave in operation every irregularity of the lining. The sections were taken at salient points, by lowering a hanging staging on which the apparatus was placed. Tracings from the paper of the machine were made, and, as in this case several copies were required, the tracings were glued on to thin sheets of basswood, and patterns carefully sawed out with a bracket saw. * Transactions, vol. iii, p. 106.

A special meeting of the officers of the Columbia Section was held in Spokane, Wash., Jan. 10, 1918, for the purpose of organizing and nominating members to the principal committees of the Section. Present: J. C. Haas, Vice-chairman; W. H. Linney, Past Chairman; and L. K. Armstrong, Secretary. J. F. McCarthy, Wallace, Idaho, was appointed fifth member of the Executive Committee. The following were appointed to the Membership Committee: R. M. Betts; for Oregon; W. J. Hall, for Idaho; J. M. Porter, for Washington. A member for British Columbia will be appointed later. The following were appointed to the Committee on Papers: Prof. F. A. Thomson, Moscow, Idaho; Prof. L. 0. Howard, Pullman, Wash.; H. S. Lee, Rye Valley, Ore. A fourth member, representing British Columbia, is to be appointed later. The following members were appointed representatives on the Executive Committee of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association: J. C. Haas, W. H. Linney, F. A. Ross, L. K. Armstrong. The Treasurer reported a deficit, resulting from the participation of the Section at the Northwest Mining Convention in 1916. It was recommended that the Institute be petitioned to make good this deficit, in addition to the usual annual allowance. The members of the committee who were present expressed their desire to be of greater service in the present war, and discussed at some length the possible means of carrying out their desires. It was later decided to reopen the subject at a subsequent meeting of the Section, or to present it to the Executive Committee of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association for discussion and cooperative action. Gravity separation techniques have been in use in the mineral sands industry for decades; from the Reichert cone to Wilfley tables, Wright sluices and the Kelsey Jig, all attempting that elusive perfect gravity separation. Just as the gravity separation industry evolved, Richards Bay Minerals also evolved in their use and approach to gravity separation. This paper discusses the history of gravity separation at Richards Bay Minerals and briefly comments on future developments. History Primary Concentration Richards Bay Mineral?s (RBM) first mining concentrator and mineral separation plant commenced operation in 1977 to process ilmenite, rutile and zircon bearing dunal deposits along the northern Natal coast. The orebody contained a greater proportion of non-valuable magnetic heavy mineral in the SG range of 3 to 4 compared to West Australian and Florida USA deposits, making mineral separation more difficult(1). The deposit was mined using two dredges feeding a floating 2000 tph concentrator. Concentrator feed was screened and fed to two four-stage circuits consisting of primary, scavenger, cleaner and recleaner Reichert cones [see Figure 1]. The primary units were fed at a rate of 80 tph and a density of 60% solids by weight.
